    Sing Elliott Smith

The title is about as self-explanatory as could be: 'Seth Avett & Jessica Lea
Mayfield sing Elliott Smith.' 12 songs originally written by the acclaimed and wellloved
Smith, performed by 2 artists, currently known for their contributions to the
indie folk rock landscape. The recordings are, in many cases, defined by bare
instrumentation, driven by a simple yet bold vocal delivery, the depth of feeling
    complimenting that of the subject matter. This album is an obvious labor of love;
a comment based on the genuine reverence which Avett and Mayfield clearly
hold for Smith. At times, the songs feel light as a feather, while in others, thematically
leaden with heartache, they are given a deep breath, a different dimension,
a new color. In modern fashion, melodies intensely whispered by Elliott Smith
are sung in a harmonious way, akin to the folk aesthetic of Gillian Welch and

LETTER CONCERNING THE RECORD 'IV' AND A POST SCRIPT TO FANS

A lot can happen in twelve years. It is beyond probable (if not brutally unavoidable) that such a period of time could render a man nearly unrecognizable to his older self. I would not categorize the young man who made three records under the pen name 'Darling' (incidentally, me) as unrecognizable, but I can say perhaps that we are vaguely disassociated. Those 3 albums, written between 1999 and 2005 and recorded anywhere except a recording studio (the bulk being tracked in my bedroom and parents' garage) follow the exceedingly lonesome course of a kid barely out of high school through a shaky introduction to manhood. They were recorded alone (with cheap microphones) composed alone (with expensive sentimentality), defined by loving befuddlement, and darkened by an all-consuming breakup. I look at them now with an appreciation for where I was, with no small measure of gratitude that I am no longer there. What has not changed however, is that there are still songs that come along which make sense in my mind as fitting only on a 'Darling' record. Truthfully, in the decade-plus that has passed since I last released a solo piece, there have been many songs of this nature. Consequently I have written, designed, edited, and put this record out many times in my mind. Inevitably, however, life would change and the conceptual direction would change with it. It is changing now as I write this. But after twelve birthdays, twelve New Year's Eve's, and twelve winters, I have a portrait I am compelled to commit to the canon of self-portraits.

I am no longer the kid with all that worry, that blaring hurt and rum-fueled uncertainty. I am somewhere else now. But I still sit in my bedroom, quietly following songs where they take me, using them to process what is happening in my life. I have often declared to myself, that I would not leave the 'Darling' moniker forever tied to what I now regard as a time of young (albeit sincere) melancholy. And while this fourth installment is by no means an offering of pure and bright optimism, it is a statement less heavy with heartache, and hopefully a bit more even-keeled in its manner - whatever the emotional narrative. More importantly, it is a honest glimpse into my story alone and a faithful rendition of what I believe to be a notable chapter.

For those interested in the Darling project:

To say that activity of one form or another relating to my solo work is infrequent would be a bit of an understatement. In truth, as time goes, I am thankfully occupied primarily by the joys of my family and the pleasure of making music with my brother and some of my dearest friends. When, however, there are endeavors of the Darling variety on the horizon, I would be honored to let anyone interested know about it. If you count yourself among this set, please feel free to share your email address below. I can say, as someone who religiously declines giving my email out when a cashier asks for it, and as someone who somehow spends more time unsubscribing from email lists than answering emails, I will ONLY pass the word along when there is a word to pass meaning something significant like an upcoming album or confirmed performance(s). Once again, I realize that giving any part of your contact information out is a significant action, and I believe it should be seen as such. In other words, I won't be arranging for emails to go out about anything but relevant 'Darling' news. As always, thank you for your time and care.

    Sincerely,

    Timothy Seth Avett

    Birds

Seth Glier's new album Birds is steeped in conflict and contradictions. There's grief and loss, but also strength and resilience; doubt and dismay, but also a sense of optimism as Glier confronts heavy topics and wrestles them into the daylight.

Glier (pronounced Gleer) recorded Birds in an airy loft in western Massachusetts outfitted with a grand piano and floor-to-ceiling windows. Birds roost just outside those windows, on the roof of the converted mill building where he lives, and they became his sympathetic audience while Glier made the album. I felt a tremendous amount of comfort talking to the Birds, he says I'd check in with them regularly to see how they thought things were going so far.

Birds is Glier's fifth album, and the latest entry in a burgeoning career that has included a Grammy nomination and a pair of Independent Music Awards while touring with artists including Ani DiFranco and Ryan Adams.

The songs on Birds range from personal to political, and are bound together by the awareness that our world is a fragile place that is all the more magical for it. Glier makes that point on a large scale with Water on Fire, a terse, grinding tune that opens with a cynical reworking of a Ray Charles lyric as Glier uses fracking to dig into the false equivalence between freedom and capitalism. Hasn't Hit Me Yet has a more visceral, intimate approach: the soulful slow jam, full of warm guitars and multi-tracked vocals, is about the death of Glier's autistic brother.

Together, those songs represent the opposite poles of Birds. I was really trying to explore connections on this record, Glier says. Among those connections is the one between race and the criminal justice system on Justice for All, a raw chain-gang stomp that sounds almost like an old field recording. Like I Do takes a more oblique tack, drawing out feelings of anger through the use of noisy synthesizers and fuzzed-out bass pads.

The songs on Birds reflect a scope of sound and style: the title track is lush and & orchestral, for example, while Too Much Water pairs Glier's voice and piano with subtle accompaniment from horns, for a classic, elegant feel that calls to mind Harry Nilsson in the early '70s. People Like Us is jaunty and up-tempo, while the trebly guitar arpeggios and moaning saxophone on Just Because I Can sound like a sock-hop slow dance, until you zero in on lyrics delivered by a narrator who dynamites his domestic bliss simply for the power trip. Conflict. Contradiction.

Even the cover tune, a reimagined version of Buffalo Springfield's For What It's Worth, evokes urgency. Although it was written 50 years ago, it's still about what's happening right now, Glier says.

Birds began taking shape after Glier lost his brother, Jamie, who died in October 2015, and inspired a TED Talk performance that Glier gave in 2016. My brother passing away was a huge component of where I was and what I was looking for, Glier says. In particular, I was looking for meanings, wanting his life to mean more than just being over.

For a long time afterward, Glier passed the time by writing songs and inspecting each melody with the feathered fellows by his windowsill. Instead of recording the album in a Los Angeles studio, as he did on his 2015 album If I Could Change One Thing, he decided to make Birds at home.

I thought that I should just stay close to the windows here, Glier says. I think this sort of happened by accident, but by the time I started recording the record, it was fall in New England, which is a profoundly beautiful death. The air is full of honesty, the sky is full of geese, and there is bright gorgeousness woven into the dying of things. It all seeped into the textures of this record.

    Sleater-Kinney

"Sleater-Kinney is America's best rock band" - Greil Marcus, Time (2001)

Sleater-Kinney is an acclaimed, American rock band that formed in
Olympia, Washington in 1994. The band's core lineup consists of Corin
Tucker (vocals and guitar), Carrie Brownstein (guitar and vocals), and
Janet Weiss (drums). Sleater-Kinney were known for their feminist,
left-leaning politics, and were an integral part of the riot grrrl and indie
rock scenes in the Pacific Northwest.

Sleater-Kinney is the first effort from the group, recorded by Nick Carrol
at 486 Victoria Street in Melbourne, Australia, and produced by Tim
Green and the band at the Red House in Olympia, Washington. The
album was originally released in 1995 by the independent queercore
record label Chainsaw Records. The line-up featured Corin Tucker (vocals,
guitar), Carrie Brownstein (guitar, vocals) and Lora Macfarlane (drums).

"While their same-sex one-on-ones aren't exactly odes to joy, they
convey a depth of feeling that could pass for passion." [Grade: A-] -
    Robert Christgau, Consumer Guide

The album has been freshly remastered by Greg Calbi for this release.
This reissue coincides with Sub Pop's release of

Pocket Full Of Kryptonite (On Sale)

    180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl

Pocket Full of Kryptonite, originally pressed in 1991 sold over six million copies worldwide and was on Billboard's popchart for an incredible 115 straight weeks.

This reissue of Pocket Full Of Kryptonite by SoundStageDirect is a special project for both the band and Seth Frank, President and founder of SoundStageDirect. Seth's passion for vinyl started at the young age of 11 when he began working at the Princeton Record Exchange. It was in that very record store where a friendship between Seth and Chris Barron, the lead singer of the Spin Doctors solidified over a mutual love of music.

As the legend goes, Chris Barron went in to the Princeton Record Exchange in Princeton, N.J., when he was about 13 years old. He met 15-year-old Seth who at the time worked at the store which Chris thought was really cool. With $3 of hard-earned allowance in his pocket, Chris asked Seth, 'What's a really good album that's like, cheap?' Seth said, "Dude, 'Live At Leeds,' It's a killer album." And so Chris bought his first vinyl album for 99 cents, and walked out with enough money left over for a slice of pizza and a soda.

The two teenagers who bonded over their passion for music and vinyl records in particular are still friends today, coming full circle with the limited edition 180 gram vinyl release of Pocket Full Of Kryptonite. It's very clear both men still share the same excitement about bringing music to people, each in their own way.

The Spin Doctors are currently on tour with all of the original members (Chris Barron, Eric Schenkman, Aaron Comess & Mark White).

Now available on vinyl! In 2012, Austin singer-songwriter Seth Sherman burst onto the local scene with his debut When The Moment Is True, a collection of pop gems blending his intricate John Fahey-esque finger picking with reflective songwriting reminiscent of Cass McCombs and Richard Buckner. Seth reached out to a number of veterans of the Austin scene and quickly realized this was no longer a solo effort. Thus was born Tinnarose. Call the Doctor is Sleater-Kinney's second studio album. It was produced
by John Goodmanson and released on March 25, 1996 by Chainsaw
Records. The album is often considered to be Sleater-Kinney's first
proper album because Tucker and co-vocalist and guitarist Carrie
Brownstein left their previous bands, Heavens to Betsy and Excuse 17,
at the time of its recording. The line-up featured Corin Tucker (vocals,
guitar), Carrie Brownstein (guitar, vocals) and Lora Macfarlane (drums,
    vocals).

Call the Doctor appeared at number three in The Village Voice's "Pazz
& Jop" critics' poll for 1996. In 2010, the album was ranked number
49 in the list of the 100 greatest albums of the nineties by the editors
    of Rolling Stone.

    Range Anxiety

Formed in Melbourne in late 2008, Twerps enjoyed immediate success, releasing a series of vinyl singles and cassettes on various labels around the world. Their 2011 self-titled debut album was recorded with producer Jack Farley at Head Gap, marking the band's first foray into a "bona fide" recording studio. The release of Twerps led to appearances at SXSW and CMJ and tours with Real Estate, Mac DeMarco, and others. Not wanting to wait until 2015 to unleash new songs on present and future fans, Twerps quickly recorded the delightful Underlay EP, which Pitchfork described as "songs fraught with universal, emotionally familiar sentiments."

And now, Merge brings you Twerps' second full-length album, Range Anxiety. Also recorded with Jack Farley, its title refers to a debilitating fear of running out of gas-both literally and metaphysically. As singer-guitarist Julia McFarlane explains, "The title Range Anxiety is both descriptive and comic. The album at times feels like it was built on uncertainties; some purely practical and some emotional obstacles were present around the start of writing."

Twerps are a very collaborative band, with most songs being written in rehearsal rooms. "Obviously, we write the lyrics separately, but the band is best when everyone is being creative," muses Julia. "Rick and Alex are big voices in the stylistic direction of the band. Rick is a genuinely curious mind and also a vast library of musical reference. As a graphic designer, he has a much more sophisticated ability to interpret and articulate ideas than most people I know, and he has introduced Martin and me to some of Twerps' most coveted influences. Bringing Alex to the band also meant introducing another songwriter. He probably has made ten more records than us collectively and has been a real burst of energy in the band due to his militant
work ethic and enthusiasm for productivity."

Range Anxiety is a worthy showcase of the creativity and vitality Twerps bring to their music. At first listen, nods to The Go-Betweens and the band's beloved Flying Nun influences are clear, but upon closer examination, Twerps expand into a sound uniquely their own.

Twerps are Martin Frawley (guitar, vocals); Rick Milovanovic (bass, vocals, synthesizer); Alex Macfarlane (drums, guitar, vocals); and Julia McFarlane (guitar, vocals, keyboards).

    Blue Giant

Blue Giant is the creation of Kevin and Anita Robinson, better known as Portland indie-pop darlings Viva Voce. The Robinson's new band features Chris Funk (The Decemberists), Evan Railton (Swords) and Seth Lorinczi (The Golden Bears). On their self-titled debut, produced by Kevin, Blue Giant combine the traditional sounds of American music, country, bluegrass and folk, with driving, straight-ahead rock n roll. The 12 tracks on the album, all written by Kevin and Anita, showcase that versatility from the classic country feel of "Lonely Girl," to the melodic guitars in "Clean The Clock," to the mellow, deceptively simple "Gone For Good" which features Sleater-Kinney's Corin Tucker.

An Indie-Rock band from San Luis Obispo, California, Lakes formed in 2005. After years of being close friends and playing in different bands, Matt
Covington, Jeremy Wells, Jacob Wick, and Seth Roberts became Lakes. After releasing an EP, a full length, and doing multiple tours, Lakes went into the
studio to work on their most definitive album yet. The songs reflect the years of friendship, the low and high points of life they have shared together, as
well as the lessons and beauty seen through it all. There are no gimmicks with Lakes, no eyeliner, no frills, just honest songs about this thing we all have
    in common, life.

    Body Questions

Seth Kauffman is Floating Action. Hailing from the small town of Black Mountain, NC Kauffman channels the collective creative energy that has been birthed and transferred between the mountains of the Swannanoa Valley. For his 6th proper studio album Kauffman holed up in his own tiny studio and took from his experiences working with luminaries such as Dan Auerbach and Jim James and built upon them to further challenge his own style and sound by creating his most advanced work to date. Body Questions is a personal testament of the Floating Action vision, it is growth that challenges and exhilarates the sensory experience constructed in the form of extraordinary pop songs.

    The Great Southern Trendkill

The 8th studio album by Pantera, originally released in 1996, reached number 4 on the Billboard 200 chart. Due to tension among the bandmembers, Phil Anselmo recorded the vocals alone at Trent Reznor's Nothing Studios in New Orleans while the rest of the group recorded at Chasin Jason Studios in Dallas, Texas.

The Great Southern Trendkill features some of the fastest tempos and most down-tuned guitars that the band ever recorded. It also has a more experimental nature to its songs, such as the acoustic guitar and keyboard-laden Suicide Note Pt. I.

Unlike Pantera's first three major label albums, the vocals are often double tracked and layered to create a more demonic effect. An example of this can be heard in the chorus of 13 Steps to Nowhere, when Phil Anselmo's singing voice is backed up by high pitched screaming, done by Seth Putnam.

    Adventus

Adventus is the Latin word for arrival. And so Cody Canada and The Departed emerge with their first original album. Upon the disbanding of Cross Canadian Ragweed, The Departed took root; Cody Canada and his long time Ragweed band mate, Jeremy Plato on bass and vocals, with Seth James on guitar and vocals, Steve Littleton on B3 organ and keys, and Chris Doege on drums. The band members had spoken reverentially of each other's musicianship before getting together almost two years ago. But make no mistake; Adventus is anything but a relic of the past. It rocks hard, it burns in the Southern sun, and it represents a new era of creative growth, tapping into the eternal emotions and sonics that have informed the great American musical styles from the start.

Too Young To Be In Love

Too Young To Be In Love is the first fully-realized Hunx and His Punx album, and the groups first for Hardly Art. It was recorded in New York City by Ivan Julian, one of the founding members of inimitable NYC punk legends Richard Hell and the Voidoids. This record was made in the same studio that one of Hunx's idols, Ronnie Spector, once recorded in. While it is preceded by the Gay Singles LP (True Panther Sounds/Matador Records, 2009), a collection of hard-to-find and out-of-print 7 singles, Too Young To Be In Love is the first proper studio record from Hunx and His Punx.

Too Young To Be In Love also marks the first time the group has ever been comprised entirely by punkettes, another name for the all girl band that band leader Seth Bogart (aka Hunx) always dreamed of. Shannon Shaw (of Shannon and the Clams) plays bass, and wrote three of the albums songs. Her powerful voice on Lovers Lane and The Curse of Being Young crackles and breaks with a raw ferocity that perfectly compliments Hunxs swoon-worthy nasal croon. This album also represents a distinct reversal of roles, the all-girl quartet (Shaw, plus guitarist Michelle Santamaria, drummer Erin Emslie, and Amy Blaustein on guitar/organ) bring the fire, while Hunx brings the sugar. All of the ladies sing on this album, and their voices combine to create some modern Wall of Sound magic.

Hunx and His Punx might be the first ever girl group fronted by a flamboyant gay male whose dream in life is to sound like a girl. They have created a unique new sound they refer to as Young Oldies, a mixture of '50s teenage rock n roll, '60s girl groups and bubblegum pop.

I only write songs out of heartbreak, says Hunx of the new record. Older songs focused on trashier homoerotic topics like cruising and boyfriend stealing. But Too Young To Be In Love is all about love and heartbreak. People tend to have scandalous ideas about Seth Hunx Bogart. This can happen when you try to French kiss the entire front row at one of your shows, pose for photographs nude or bare everything in the video for Lust For Life by the band Girls. But behind all of this is a sweet and somewhat innocent entertainer who knows how to put on a show.

    A Fallen Temple

    Remastered Re-release Of Septicflesh's 1998 Classic Album

    Includes Four Rare Bonus Tracks

Adorned With A Brand New Cover Artwork Designed By Septicflesh Frontman Seth "Siro" Anton.

"The Last Time" is a PARADISE LOST cover which was previously only available on a long sold-out tribute album to one of the Greek demons' biggest influences, and the last three bonus tracks come from the 1998 'The Eldest Cosmonaut' EP.

With Ophidian Wheel (originally released 1997) SEPTICFLESH took a bold step away from the classic Death Metal formula they had established with their two earlier albums Mystic Places of Dawn (1994) and Esoptron (1995). This third full-length fully explored and experimented with the possibilities offered by classic Gothic Metal as defined by PARADISE LOST's eponymous album. Gothic (1991) is an obvious influence for Ophidian Wheel with its amalgamation of harsh Death Metal, dark Gothic atmospheres and contrasting beautiful female vocals. To this recipe the Greek demons added their trademark spices like the singing guitar sound and classical elements. For the first time SEPTICFLESH featured the exceptionally talented soprano Natalie Rassoulis on Ophidian Wheel for stunning impact.

The band was founded in Athens in 1990 by brothers Christos and Spiros Seth Antoniou joined by guitarist Sotiris Vayenas. The Greeks quickly released the Temple of the Lost Race EP (1991), which was followed by their cult first full-length Mystic Places of Dawn. Both have already been re-released jointly by Season of Mist. This was followed by the reissue of SEPTICFLESH's second album Esoptron with new artwork and bonus tracks, on which the Greeks already expanded their sonic realm with hints of Gothic flavour and a heavy infusion of TYPE O NEGATIVE.

SEPTICFLESH cemented their reputation for experimental and intelligent Metal music with A Fallen Temple (1998), Revolution DNA (1999) and Sumerian Daemons (2003). Yet in October 2003 the band members decided to go separate ways. Continuous demand of their large and loyal following finally led to a reunion in 2007, after which SEPTICFLESH firmly established themselves as a leading force of symphonic Dark Metal with critically acclaimed masterpieces Communion (2008) and The Great Mass (2011).

    Yonkers NY

If a songwriter of some accomplishment who is also a singer predominantly known for his work in country music was looking for a subject for a deeply personal cycle of songs, it's pretty unlikely that Yonkers, New York, a small city bordering on New York City's borough of the Bronx, would be the subject.

Not, of course, unless the writer is Chip Taylor, who grew up there. With Yonkers, NY, Taylor, a veteran songwriter whose songs have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Peggy Lee, Dusty Springfield, Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, the Hollies and, of course, the Troggs (who waxed his first big hit, Wild Thing), has gone back to his childhood and adolescence and come up with eleven songs filled with warmth and humor, enlivened with spoken reminiscences and packaged with a book of lyrics and vintage photos of the people and places that are their subjects. The songs on Yonkers, NY take us into Taylor's family life and into his discovery of music, horses and girls, opening these subjects up with a skill only a master songwriter can summon.

    Galactic Melt (Awaiting Repress)

When talking about the music of COM TRUISE (one of the many pseudonyms of New Jersey designer/musician SETH HALEY), the nostalgia bit inevitably comes up, so let's get that out of the way. Yes, his songs tap classic sci-fi and proto-electro in a way that is distinctly early eighties in scope. But they're also remarkably weirdstutter-step proggy and intoxicatingly psychedelic, like those classic touchstones got drunk on lava lamp juice inside a pinball machine. After his well-received Cyanide Sisters EP, a grip of remixes for artists like Twin Shadow, Neon Indian, and, uh, Daft Punk, and a few floating MP3s, Truise's first LP, Galactic Melt, will finally enter brainspaces this summer. And what an appropriate title it bears. For a brief moment, opener Terminal subsumes you in warm, starry-eyed synth arpeggios, and then down the rabbit hole you gofrom the keyed up, skyscraping machine love of VHS Sex and Cathode Girls to opuses like Air Cal and Ether Drift that sound like Doogie Howser's idea of the perfect prom songmathy, forlorn, funky, and mighty in technical ambition. That they're all noticeably cinematic is, of course, by designHaley envisioned Galactic Melt as a sort of film scorefrom the mind, chronicling the lift and death of Com Truise, the world's first synthetic/robotic astronaut, from his creation and life on earth to his subsequent mission to a newly discovered galaxy called Wave 1. Eventually, Truise becomes one with his newfound cosmos, like Pinocchio becoming a real boy, but in the nether regions of imaginary space.

    Yerba Buena Bounce

Exceptional 200-gram deluxe vinyl pressing. Deluxe gatefold jackets crafted by Stoughton Printing. With Yerba Buena Bounce, its 10th album, The Hot Club of San Francisco confirms its reputation as America's longest-running and finest Gypsy Jazz ensemble. Inspired explorations of Django Reinhardt's tunes, originals and more, are captured in shimmering sound. The Hot Club of San Francisco is a quintet of accomplished and versatile musicians who celebrate Django Reinhardt's and Stephane Grappelli's renowned Hot Club de France. The ensemble borrows the all-string instrumentation of three guitars, violin and bass from the original Hot Club but breathes new life into the music with innovative arrangements of classic tunes and original compositions from the group's superb lead guitarist, Paul Mehling. Hearing the ensemble takes the listener back to the 1930s and to the small, smoky jazz clubs of Paris. Mandolinist David Grisman, father of Dawg music and good friend of The Hot Club, makes a special guest appearance on two tracks. The set is further enhanced by bandoneon virtuoso Seth Asarno. Two bonus tracks feature the quintet augmented by three Dixieland horns.

Recorded by multi-Grammy-nominated Prof. Keith Johnson at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California, the Yerba Buena Bounce sessions benefited from the historic ambience, scene of hundreds of classic jazz and rock recordings. Using his own custom-built microphones and electronics (as always), Johnson was able to utilize some of Fantasy's unique facilities, such as a legendary echo chamber, to add luster to his always life-like soundscapes.
