    Onion

Shannon & The Clams' forthcoming release Onion was produced by The Black Keys front man Dan Auerbach at his Nashville studio. On their new LP, the band explores themes of origin and self-determination, loss and recovery, and the power of community to heal after tragedy. "It's okay for people to interpret the songs," Shannon Shaw says. "You can put your own story into it if that helps you heal. I just want people to feel something, whatever it is."

Shannon & The Clams had already begun writing for the Onion sessions in Fall 2016, when their world was rattled by the Oakland Ghost Ship warehouse fire in early December. In the wake of the fire, the band looked back at their origins in the Oakland underground and the importance of that world to their genesis. They could recognize the community as a delicate incubator for fringe art, and an unstable but nurturing place for performers to practice and cross-pollinate where there otherwise is no platform. The song "Backstreets" is Cody's response to the Ghost Ship fire, and particularly the issues of artist housing and being forced to make your own way in a society that is not arranged to accommodate artists. Album closer "Don't Close Your Eyes" is Shannon's response, an inspirational ballad urging those suffering through loss to not give up in the midst of tragedy.

Over the last decade, Shannon and her chief collaborator guitarist Cody Blanchard have released four albums of 60s-inspired pop on indie labels, toured tirelessly and have gradually solidified a lineup of devoted Bay Area musicians. In this current iteration, Shannon and the Clams, consisting of Shannon Shaw on bass and vocals, Cody Blanchard on guitar and vocals, Nate Mahan on drums, and Will Sprott on keyboards.

    Gone By The Dawn

Gone by the Dawn, the newest Shannon and the Clams album, is their best work to date. The music is complex, the lyrical content is emotionally raw and honest, and the production is the strangest it's ever been. The album was written as one member was recovering from a serious breakup and another was deep in one. The lyrics reflect it, and the entire album is dripping with sadness, pain, and introspection.

Shannon and Cody have not written generic songs about love or the lack of it. Instead they have written about their very own specific heartbreak, mistreatment, and mental trials. The emotion is palpable. On Gone by the Dawn the Clams have DARED TO BE REAL. They've exposed their true emotions, which is what's most moving about the album.

Dreams In The Rat House (Awaiting Repress)

Hailing from the Bay Area of California, somewhere next to Hammer Time mansion, dwell Shannon and the Clams. A throw back doo wop, rock n roll trio that features Shannon (of Hunx and His Punx) and Cody (aka King Lollipop) on songwriting duty and shared vocals. The Clams have a large following that grows by the day as they tour the planet and bring their child like sense of humor, gorgeous vocals, and true to the game Animal House style garage rock n roll to the dance party. Production is raw, like Hazel Adkins raw, while the songs are sweet like honey poured from an Etta James shaped bottle.

    Pull It Together

Pull It Together is Shannon Stephens' third album. Vulnerability has been replaced with a fierce confidence born of experience. Stephens sings out now with a voice free of youthful self-consciousness, filled instead with conviction, and no small amount of anger at the state of the world. She has always distilled powerful emotions into her music but this time the emotional dial is cranked.

From the sweetly swaggering "What Love Looks Like" to the searing "Your Fabulous Friends," she balances cynicism with generous quantities of warmth, humor and empathy. Never is this fine balance more apparent than on "Faces Like Ours" where Bonnie Prince Billy (Will Oldham) weaves his voice with hers in a duet that wryly dissects the injustice of racial and economic privilege.

The result of this new approach is an album that is gritty, fluid, and more accessible than her previous work. Call it pragmatic pop, optimism balanced with the sharp-edged reality of life in 2012.

    The Apocalypse Blues Revue

In February 2016, Apocalypse Blues Revue entered the Vibe Recording Studio and cut their self-titled debut in just nine days. Co-founded by Godsmack drummer Shannon Larkin and guitarist Tony Rombola, and featuring vocalist Ray "Rafer John" Cerbone and bassist Brian Carpenter, the quartet honors blues traditions while etching their stamp on the genre.

Mixed by Dave Fortman, the debut album conjures up swampy soul colored by rock 'n' roll and rockabilly over the course of 11 tracks.

"As far as blues goes, The Apocalypse Blues Revue is a little heavier, a little darker, and has some punk rock attitude in the lyrics," says Shannon. "We wanted to make something deep that will provoke thought. It had to be evil though. We're not trying to make It happy. It's called blues for a reason."

Tony and Shannon's creative union traces back to 2001, when Shannon joined Godsmack. Selling 20 million records worldwide and garnering four Grammy® Award nominations, the juggernaut remains a hard rock institution.

"I want people to walk away with our songs stuck in their heads," Shannon leaves off. "The music speaks for itself on this record." "It's back to basics," concludes Tony.

    Eons

Portland, Oregon's Mimicking Birds will be releasing their sophomore outing, Eons, via Glacial Pace. Led by singer-songwriter Nate Lacey, the indie-folk outfit has made a name for itself by melodically weaving introspective lyrics over ambient landscapes. While the new album seems to find Lacey looking outward into the abyss of the universe, the lead single Bloodlines proves that the band's knack for more reigned-in atmospherics remains as strong as ever.

    If Then Not When

The ghost stories, murder ballads and grimoires on Louisville, KY's King's Daughters & Sons full-length album If Then Not When are haunting, spare and at times explosively unsettling; part William Faulkner, part Led Zeppelin. Informed by, but not beholden to the history of its members (Shipping News, Rachel's, The For Carnation, Shannon Wright), their songs are singular, thoughtful and best heard loud. If Then Not When was made direct to 2 tape in 2008 and 2009 at The Funeral Home by Kevin Ratterman, engineer for California Guitar Trio, My Morning Jacket and Wax Fang. Tubby's Groove

One of the greatest jazz musicians to ever come out of the UK, saxophonist Edward Brian "Tubby" Hayes began playing professionally when he was just 15 years old, quickly rising to stardom in the late 1950s as co-leader of the legendary Jazz Couriers alongside saxophonist Ronnie Scott. Recorded in December 1959-shortly after Scott left the Couriers to open his own club (the famed 'Ronnie Scott's' in Soho)-Tubby's Groove is widely considered to be one of his greatest studio albums. Here Tubbs plays in a quartet setting with former Couriers, Terry Shannon on piano and Jeff Clyne on bass, as well as the great Phil Seamen on drums. Although Tubby became ill and died at age 38, he was at this time still very much in his prime, as can be heard in his virtuoso playing on tracks like the opener "Tin Tin Deo" and "Sunny Monday". He can also be heard playing vibes on his own "Embers".

    Blind Melon

Blind Melon is the eponymous debut album by acclaimed Rock band Blind Melon, released in 1992, featuring breakthrough single "No Rain". Fronted by singer Shannon Hoon (who can be heard doing backing vocals on Guns N Roses' Use Your Illusion I and II)
Blind Melon had a distinctive sound, influenced by Southern Rock and Psychedelic Rock.

Songs like "Soak The Sin" and "Tones Of Home" evoke Hard Rock with a funky sound; "Time" resembles Grateful Dead-style improvisational music and acoustic songs like "Change" and "No Rain" hinted at Pop and Folk influences. The band recorded the bulk of the album with producer Rick Parashar (who had produced Pearl Jam's Ten) at London Bridge Studio in Seattle, Washington.

Blind Melon's production is marked by the use of outdated amplifiers and other antiquated studio technology. Modern studio effects were not used in its production as the band wanted to create a pure and intimate sounding record.

Nika Roza Danilova has been recording music as Zola Jesus for more than a decade. For the majority of that time, she's been on Sacred Bones Records, and Okovi marks her reunion with the label. Fittingly, the 11 electronics-driven songs on Okovi share musical DNA with her early work on Sacred Bones. The music on this record was written in pure catharsis, and as a result, the sonics are heavier, darker, and more exploratory. In addition to the contributions of Danilova's longtime live bandmate Alex DeGroot, producer/musician WIFE, cellist/noise-maker Shannon Kennedy from Pedestrian Deposit, and percussionist Ted Byrnes all helped build the textural universe of these songs. Above all, Zola Jesus has crafted a profound meditation on loss and reconciliation that stands tall alongside the great works of its genre. Okovi speaks of tragedy with great wisdom and clarity. Its songs plumb dark depths, but they reflect light as well.

Too Young To Be In Love

Too Young To Be In Love is the first fully-realized Hunx and His Punx album, and the groups first for Hardly Art. It was recorded in New York City by Ivan Julian, one of the founding members of inimitable NYC punk legends Richard Hell and the Voidoids. This record was made in the same studio that one of Hunx's idols, Ronnie Spector, once recorded in. While it is preceded by the Gay Singles LP (True Panther Sounds/Matador Records, 2009), a collection of hard-to-find and out-of-print 7 singles, Too Young To Be In Love is the first proper studio record from Hunx and His Punx.

Too Young To Be In Love also marks the first time the group has ever been comprised entirely by punkettes, another name for the all girl band that band leader Seth Bogart (aka Hunx) always dreamed of. Shannon Shaw (of Shannon and the Clams) plays bass, and wrote three of the albums songs. Her powerful voice on Lovers Lane and The Curse of Being Young crackles and breaks with a raw ferocity that perfectly compliments Hunxs swoon-worthy nasal croon. This album also represents a distinct reversal of roles, the all-girl quartet (Shaw, plus guitarist Michelle Santamaria, drummer Erin Emslie, and Amy Blaustein on guitar/organ) bring the fire, while Hunx brings the sugar. All of the ladies sing on this album, and their voices combine to create some modern Wall of Sound magic.

Hunx and His Punx might be the first ever girl group fronted by a flamboyant gay male whose dream in life is to sound like a girl. They have created a unique new sound they refer to as Young Oldies, a mixture of '50s teenage rock n roll, '60s girl groups and bubblegum pop.

I only write songs out of heartbreak, says Hunx of the new record. Older songs focused on trashier homoerotic topics like cruising and boyfriend stealing. But Too Young To Be In Love is all about love and heartbreak. People tend to have scandalous ideas about Seth Hunx Bogart. This can happen when you try to French kiss the entire front row at one of your shows, pose for photographs nude or bare everything in the video for Lust For Life by the band Girls. But behind all of this is a sweet and somewhat innocent entertainer who knows how to put on a show.

    Songversation

Back with Motown, India.Arie is rejuvenated for her fifth album, which follows a lengthy hiatus. Largely a low-key, gently uplifting affair with a soft, warm glow, 11 of its 16 tracks are enhanced with assistance from several Turkish musicians -- including percussionists, horn players, an oudist, and the Istanbul Strings -- who were recorded at the studio of Sezen Aksu (one of the guests on Testimony, Vol. 2). Longtime co-producer and instrumentalist Shannon Sanders remains, while new associate David Ryan Harris (Dionne Farris, John Mayer) is another major factor.

The album's upbeat tone is set with the driving Just Do You, a career highlight boasting a chorus that recalls the pre-chorus of Michael Jackson's Rock with You. Sweet, sighing, relaxed numbers like Flowers (You're the moral compass directing me to light) and Cocoa Butter (You are like cocoa butter on my heart) are among the most India.Arie-like songs laid down. Everything -- most exemplified by Break the Shell, inspired by an encounter with Cicely Tyson -- transmits positivity, even when she admits that, as a woman almost four decades in with neither a lifelong partner nor children, she's unsure of her position in life. It's evident that Arie's in a good place, both creatively and personally, yet SongVersation is not about self-satisfaction. She has no trouble bringing her listeners along.

Shaken-Up Versions is a mini album of eight classic The Knife tracks featuring new renditions of songs from across their discography. The tracks were reworked especially for the band's Shaking The Habitual North American tour in the Spring of 2014. Two of the tracks, "Pass This On (Shaken-Up Version)" & "Stay Out Here (Shaken-Up Version)" feature vocals from Light Asylum's Shannon Funchess. The Knife simultaneously released a video for "Without You My Life Would Be Boring (Shaken-Up Version)" directed by Bitte Andersson.

The Knife kicked off their first North American tour in seven years by performing at the Outdoor Stage at Coachella. The tour was met with overwhelmingly positive responses from the media and fans alike.

The producer of the album, Andy Wallace, is seen on the cover, sipping soup.

Couldn't Stand The Weather (Pure Pleasure)

With his astonishingly accomplished guitar playing, Stevie Ray Vaughan ignited the blues revival of the '80's. Vaughan drew equally from bluesmen like Albert King, Otis Rush, and Muddy Waters and rock & roll players like Jimi Hendrix and Lonnie Mack, as well as the stray jazz guitarist like Kenny Burrell, developing a uniquely eclectic and fiery style that sounded like no other guitarist, regardless of genre. Vaughan bridged the gap between blues and rock like no other artist had since the late '60s. For the next seven years, Stevie Ray was the leading light in American blues, consistently selling out concerts while his albums regularly went gold. His tragic death in 1990 only emphasized his influence in blues and American rock & roll.

    • Stan Harrison (tenor saxophone)

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Texas Flood (Pure Pleasure)

It's hard to overestimate the impact Stevie Ray Vaughan's debut, Texas Flood, had upon its release in 1983. At that point, blues was no longer hip, the way it was in the '60s. Texas Flood changed all that, climbing into the Top 40 and spending over half a year on the charts, which was practically unheard of for a blues recording. Vaughan became a genuine star and, in doing so, sparked a revitalization of the blues. This was a monumental impact, but his critics claimed that, no matter how prodigious Vaughan's instrumental talents were, he didn't forge a distinctive voice; instead, he wore his influences on his sleeve, whether it was Albert King's pinched yet muscular soloing or Larry Davis' emotive singing. There's a certain element of truth in that, but that was sort of the point of Texas Flood. Vaughan didn't hide his influences; he celebrated them, pumping fresh blood into a familiar genre.

When Vaughan and Double Trouble cut the album over the course of three days in 1982, he had already played his set lists countless times; he knew how to turn this material inside out or goose it up for maximum impact. The album is paced like a club show, kicking off with Vaughan's two best self-penned songs, Love Struck Baby and Pride and Joy, then settling into a pair of covers, the slow-burning title track and an exciting reading of Howlin' Wolf's Tell Me, before building to the climax of Dirty Pool and I'm Crying. Vaughan caps the entire thing with Lenny, a lyrical, jazzy tribute to his wife.
