    100 Days, 100 Nights

On October 2nd, renowned Soul and Funk band Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings released 100 Days, 100 Nights on their self-owned independent label, Daptone Records. Since the 2005 release of their Naturally LP, the band has continued to build a worldwide following for their raw soulful recordings and blistering live performances. Like the highly acclaimed Naturally LP before it, 100 Days, 100 Nights was recorded in their self-built, self-operated, all analog recording studio in Bushwick, Brooklyn and bares the unmistakable Daptone Soul Sound - highly in demand among music fans and tastemakers alike. In the last year, producers such as Kanye West, Mark Ronson, Hank Shocklee, and Kenny Dope have been among those who came knocking at Daptones door seeking the inimitable Dap-Kings sound. The Dap-Kings lend a tougher edge to their own productions for such artists as Rhymefest, Lily Allen, Ghostface Killah and Amy Winehouse. Meanwhile, Sharon Jones herself has past the time between touring lending the her soulful voice to projects for Lou Reed, Rufus Wainwright, They Might Be Giants and others.

    Naturally

In a desert of computerized over-produced faux-R&B, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings' Naturally is a cool glass of water for anyone thirsty for Real Soul and Funk Music. On this, their sophomore release on Brooklyn's own independent Daptone Records, they have succeeded in transcending the boundaries of time to bring us face to face with the naked body of vintage Soul.

From the first track, a funk-infused shuffle, the Dap-Kings carve a deep and heavy groove which only gets deeper and heavier as the needle cuts further into the flesh of the album. Through ten solid tracks, 'Naturally' explores the many moods and tempos of a group that is quickly earning a reputation as one of the hottest live acts across the nation, stretching their versatility to map out the full panorama of the idiom in which they so effortlessly reside. They are able to bring us back to 1970 not with the usual bell-bottomed conventions and wah-wah cliche's employed by so many retro-funk wannabe's, but by reaching back to the original source of all that good music: sincerity, integrity, melody, and an unwavering loyalty to rhythm.

In arrangements punctuated by bold horns and tastefully accented with piano, vibes, and strings, the Dap-Kings road-tight rhythm section expertly frames the skeleton of a classic Soul album, breathing life into a body of songs penned exclusively for Sharon Jones' unique voice. In turn, she masterfully and instinctively reaches beyond the basic melodies into her gospel-soaked roots to pour every drop of herself into each note that passes her lips, elevating the music from craft to art. With every moan she reminds us that before Whitney, Mariah, and Jay-Z, there was Tina, Aretha, and J.B.

Leonard is the second single from Tramp, the new album from Sharon Van Etten. The shimmering sound of Sharon Van Etten's Jagjaguwar debut album, Tramp, both defies and illuminates the unsteadiness of a life in flux. Throughout the 14 months of scattered recording sessions, Van Etten was without a home -- crashing with friends and storing her possessions between varied locations. The only constant in Van Etten's life during this time was spent in Aaron Dessner's garage studio.

Give The People What They Want

While many artists have come and gone, why have Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings only continued to grow steadily in popularity around the world? The reason is simple: There is no other band around today that plays with the rhythm, feeling, or explosive power of the Dap-Kings, and there is no other singer that can match the energy and honest soul of Sharon Jones. The culmination of these soulful attributes has never been so meticulously manifested as on their latest waxen treasure, Give The People What They Want.

    I Learned The Hard Way

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings are already well known as one of the most exciting acts in the nation for both their explosive live shows and their prolific output of gritty studio recordings. I Learned The Hardway is their fourth full-length release on Brooklyn's independent Daptone Records and it marks a bold step forward for a band who almost single handedly stewarded today's return of soul music to its more traditional sound.

Produced by Bosco Mann and recorded on an Ampex eight-track tape machine by Gabriel Roth in Daptone Records' House of Soul studios, the record drips with a warmth and spontaneity rarely found since the golden days of Muscle Shoals and Stax. Sharon's raw power, rhythmic swagger, moaning soulfulness and melodic command set her fi rmly alongside Tina Turner, James Brown, Mavis Staples, and Aretha as a fi xture in the canon of soul music. From the lush Philly-Soul fanfare that ushers in The Game Gets Old at the top of the record, to the stripped down Sam Cooke-style Mama Don't Like My Man at the tail, the Dap-Kings groove seamlessly through both the most crafted and simple arrangements with subtlety and discipline. I Learned the Hard Way is the Daptone Sound at its fi nest.

    Dap-Dippin'

    Remastered From The Original Tapes

Includes Previously Unreleased Duet With Lee Fields

It's hard to believe that Sharon Jones' debut LP is a product of the year 2002, for several reasons. Given the excellent singles she recorded for Desco beginning in the late '90s, it seems like she would have gotten the opportunity for a full-length sooner; plus, her brand of raw, heavy, hard-driving funk is such a throwback to the '70s, and she pulls it off so well, that you wonder how she could have escaped that decade without at least a few rare, classic 45s (in the vein of labelmate Lee Fields). It's not hard to believe she once made her living as a prison guard, based on the tough-as-nails, no-nonsense performances she belts out on Dap Dippin' With Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, the first full-length release on Desco's descendant, Dap-Tone. Backed by the Dap-Tone house band (a conglomeration of studio pros with connections reaching back to the Desco orbit), Jones delivers a storming set of tunes that would have sounded perfectly at home on the James Brown's Original Funky Divas compilation. The style and quality are pretty consistent all the way through, but it's hard not to single out the nearly unrecognizable cover of Janet Jackson's What Have You Done for Me Lately, which is transformed into a churning blast of funk full of biting guitars (and nary a synth or drum machine in sight). Other highlights include the chunky leadoff track, Got a Thing on My Mind, the would-be dance-craze The Dap Dip, the slow-burning Make It Good to Me, and the trials-and-tribulations tale Ain't It Hard. Plus, label head Gabriel Roth throws in his usual authentic trappings -- the fake live introduction running down Jones' hits, the intentionally dated copy on the back cover -- that make the whole package even more fun. All in all, a terrific debut.

    Are We There

For all the attention that was paid to her 2012 break-through Tramp, Sharon Van Etten is an
artist with a hunger to turn another corner and to delve deeper, writing from a place of honesty
and vulnerability to create a bond with the listener that few contemporary musicians can match.
Compelled by a restless spirit, Van Etten is continuously challenging herself. Now, the result is
Are We There, a self-produced album of exceptional intimacy, sublime generosity, and immense
    breadth.

Most musicians are quite happy to leave the production end of things to someone else. It's
enough to live your music without taking on the role of producer as well. Yet Van Etten knew it
was time to make a record entirely on her terms. The saying goes "fortune favors the bold" and
yet this boldness had to be tempered. For this,Van Etten found a kindred spirit in veteran music
producer Stewart Lerman. Originally working together on Boardwalk Empire, they gently moved
into new roles, rallying around the idea of making a record together in Lerman's studio in New
Jersey. Lerman's studio expertise gave Van Etten the freedom to make Are We There the way she
imagined.Van Etten also enlisted the individual talents of her band, consisting of Heather Woods
Broderick, Doug Keith and Zeke Hutchins, and brought in friends Dave Hartley and Adam
Granduciel from The War on Drugs, Jonathan Meiberg (Shearwater),Jana Hunter(Lower Dens),
Peter Broderick, Mackenzie Scott(Torres), Stuart Bogie, Jacob C. Morris and Mickey Freeze.

It is clear from the opening chords in the first song, Afraid of Nothing, that we are witnessing a
new awareness, a sign of Van Etten in full stride, writing, producing and performing from a place
that seems almost mythical, were it not so touchable and real. Always direct, and never shying
away even from the most personally painful narratives, Van Etten's songwriting continues to
evolve. Many of the songs deal with seemingly impossible decisions, anticipation, and then
resolution. She sings of the nature of desire, memory, of being lost, emptiness, of promises and
loyalty, fear and change, of healing and the true self, violence and sanctuary, waiting, of silence.
The artist who speaks in such a voice is urging us to do something,to take hold and to go deeper.
Living in this way,the questions of life remain alive, as close and steady as breathing. Many of the
ballads of old are as dark as pitch, and people for whom the issues of life and death were as vivid
as flame wrote them. You could turn off the electricity, remove all the instruments and Sharon's
voice and words would remain. They connect her to the mystic stratum which flows just beneath
the everyday, which is rarely acknowledged as the forces of distraction sweep our attention away.

    Tramp

The shimmering sound of Tramp both defies and illuminates the unsteadiness of a life in flux. During the 14 months of scattered recording sessions, Sharon Van Etten was without a home, crashing with friends and spreading out her possessions between various locations. The only constant during this time was when Van Etten returned to the garage studio of The Nationals Aaron Dessner.

How much more incredible then that Tramp sounds so profoundly effortless and singular-minded. Given the space to experiment, Van Etten pushed herself deeper than ever before, testing different approaches and rejecting many. Van Ettens records have been subtle and powerful, at once heartbreaking, luminous, intricate and beautiful. Now lush and triumphant, this is a fresh vision, and Van Etten has realized it with the same grace that made her first two releases so enduring.

Van Ettens debut, Because I Was In Love, was a sparse set of solo songs, all anchored by her instantly unmistakable voice. The intricate, understated record covered so much emotional ground within its 33 minutes, you couldn't possibly absorb it all at once, nor stay too long in one place along its journey. The following year, Van Etten added a full band to her music. Fans quickly picked favorites, then found their choices changing, often more than once.

An early fan of Van Etten, Dessner performed epic closer Love More with Justin Vernon of Bon Iver. When Van Etten found out, she contacted him, and almost immediately collaborative plans were made. Dessner had just completed work on his studio, and offered up his new space, as well as his insight as a savvy producer. But with both artists near-nonstop touring schedule, recording days had to be spread out, a few days here, a couple weeks there, and a lot of floating and flying in between.

The resulting album is an assured and strident one, and Tramp showcases an artist in control of her powers, incorporating vivid arrangements and instrumentation into the songwriting. It is a startling collection, filled with as much defiant rock (the precise venom of Serpents), as pious, minimal beauty (the breathtaking Kevins and Joke or a Lie). There are declarative hymns (in the earnest solemnity of All I Can), and remarkably sultry numbers (as in Magic Chords). Tramp features many stupendous guests, as well, including Wye Oaks Jenn Wasner, Julianna Barwick, Beiruts Zach Condon, and Dessner himself.

Don't Want To Let You Down

Sharon Van Etten has never needed much room to make a grand statement. With four albums during the
last six years, she's become one of music's most astute new cartographers of the heart, able to capture
emotional trials and triumphs with incisive lines and a voice that loses nothing in the translation and
transmission of feelings. Her second record, epic, needed only seven tracks to live up to its title. 2012's
Tramp and last year's Are We There, went longer, but Van Etten managed still to squeeze enormous
sentiments into especially small spaces. From start to rising stardom, Van Etten has forever understood the
    impact of economy

It should come as no surprise, then, that the five-song EP I Don't Want to Let You Down offers documents
of surrender and disappointment, admission and longing in only 22 minutes. Produced by Van Etten and
Stewart Lerman, who also helmed Are We There, these songs are as sophisticated as anything Van Etten has
ever done. Supported by a string section during "I Always Fall Apart," Van Etten's voice rises alongside her
piano. Her prismatic harmonies betray the terror of the song's central admission and one of the new lyrical
cornerstones of her catalogue: "You know I always fall apart/It's not my fault/It's just my flaw/It's who I am."
During the title track, she slowly pushes her voice past an introductory murmur, as if scanning her
surroundings for the resolve to be stronger and more steadfast than she knows she has been. Building across
four minutes, the desperation of the title is expressed through guitars that get bigger, harmonies that get
broader. The chorus is a sing-along commandment, an indelible promise Van Etten makes to be better. The
War on Drugs' Adam Granduciel and David Hartley join Antibalas' Stuart Bogie, Peter Broderick and
Heather Woods-Broderick for "Pay My Debts." The longest song here, it's a cinematic number that smolders
like shoegaze before climaxing into an inescapable seesaw refrain.

The EP ends with a live rendition of "Tell Me." A demo from Tramp, but backed here by her four-piece
touring band, the tune becomes a kind of battle cry for respect and a charged pronouncement of Van Etten's
cultivated powers. It's a map of the singer's progression from an acoustic songwriter to a bona fide
bandleader, a reminder of the poignancy and efficiency her work has long paired.

The Menahan Street Band is a collaboration of musicians from Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, El Michels Affair, Antibalas and the Budos Band, brought together by musician/producer Thomas Brenneck (Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Budos Band, Amy Winehouse) to record hits in the bedroom of his Menahan St. apartment in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Dear Heather

    Import

Leonard Cohen, the most elegant Canadian bard, whispers his way through his 2004 album 'Dear Heather' like a poet quietly musing over his life and loves. The mellow, hushed, and somewhat nocturnal character of the album commands attention through Cohen's deep baritone and Sharon Robinson's clear vocals. It's an intimate album that celebrates lost loves and friendships instead of mourning them, an introspective look on life from a ripe old age (Cohen turned 70 when the album was released). And Music On Vinyl is releasing this quietly powerful album for the first time on vinyl, so you can memorize the songs in time for his European tour later this year!

    Road From Memphis

The Road from Memphis starts with a young Booker T. Jones hauling his stack of newspapers to Phineas Newborn's front yard where, while folding them for his after]school delivery route, he could listen to the jazz great practice piano. It ends with Booker and The Roots roaring through a set of both timeless and contemporary originals (and propulsive covers of Gnarls Barkley's Crazy and Lauren Hill's Everything Is Everything.

Along for the ride are vocalists Matt Berninger of the National, Yim Yames of My Morning Jacket, Sharon Jones, Lou Reed, and Booker himself, telling the story of how the funk/soul sound that Booker helped invent spiraled out from Memphis, touching The Roots' hometown of Philadelphia, New York (where engineer Gabe Roth has been recreating classic soul sonics for everyone from Sharon Jones to Amy Winehouse), and Detroit.

Detroit as in Dennis Coffey, legendary Motown session guitarist who introduced driving rock]funk rhythm to hits like Cloud Nine and Ball of Confusion by the Temptations, and brings his Detroit grit to these tracks. The Road from Memphis is classic Memphis soul, and classic Booker in the tradition of Green Onions, but beyond that it is the story of a sound, and how Booker, working with the inheritors of his sound, is keeping a tradition alive.

    Playmates

Fat Possum Records is pleased to announce the release of Jack Ladder & The Dreamlanders' upcoming album Playmates. The first taste of the record Come On Back This Way showcases newfound lightness for Ladder, weaving a glistening synth melody with a chorus duet and wordless backing from Sharon Van Etten.

Three years after the acclaimed HURTSVILLE and a move from the inner city of Sydney, Australia to the Blue Mountains, Jack Ladder returns with his new album Playmates. The album is produced by Kim Moyes of The Presets, and mixed by David Wrench (Jungle, FKA Twigs, Caribou,Seekae). The Dreamlanders - Kirin J. Callinan (whose own album Embracism was released last year on Terrible / XL) Laurence Pike (of PVT) and Donny Benet - reunite to play on the record, with Sharon Van Etten contributing vocals to two tracks.

Playmates will be Jack Ladder's fourth album, and his first on Fat Possum. His previous two albums (2008's Love Is Gone and 2011's HURTSVILLE) were shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize. It's been a long journey to this point, and Playmates finds Jack Ladder at a creative apex, moving on from the darker roads into the curious, bold komische synthesizers which backlight Playmates. Ladder's latest work cogently recalls a time when albums were made to the parameters of the encroaching technology of the compact disc. But this album is where songs take precedence over an idea.

Playmates songs are muscular, raw - yet polished to the texture of a skyscraper. The lyrics themselves are haunting; they possess the poetic slur of a black-pupilled vision of romantic despair, love's unsure footing and a palpable air of Ballardian discord beneath the surface. The songs pulse with life. Synthesizers and drum machines rub shoulders with glam guitars and pedal steel, while above all, Ladder's granite baritone slashes at love and darkness like a heavy blade. He is a tender, persistent lover; a despairing prince at the battlements.

There is also the notable presence of Sharon Van Etten. On working with Jack Ladder, she says, When I first saw Jack Ladder...it blew me away. He's got a darkness to his vocals and lyrics but with a wink. It was really fun and an interesting challenge and his songs are killer. I feel lucky to have been a part of it.

Playmates breadth of ideas, its sinister anxiety-dream lyrics and particular vision of the world offer us as complete a view of this unfathomable Jack Ladder character as we are ever likely to observe in this dimension.

    Love And War

Though Daniel Merriweather may be best known in the U.S. as the remarkably soulful voice behind Stop Me (a standout track from DJ/producer Mark Ronsons eclectic album version that went to #1 on the UKs airplay chart), the 27-year-old Melbourne native firmly establishes himself as a solo artist in his own right on Love & War, which pulses with 60s soul keyboards and horns, warm textures of acoustic and electric guitar, and cinematic string arrangements, all anchored by Merriweathers combustible vocals. Love & War is also a showcase for Merriweathers considerable songwriting talents. He wrote nearly every song on the album with various musician friends, and then presented his compositions to Ronson (who produced the album) and his backing band, The Dap Kings (of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings), who also played on Amy Winehouses Back to Black and Ronsons Version.

    Enemy/Lover

Dreamers of the Ghetto are a family band from Bloomington, IN, consisting of brothers Luke and Jonathan Jones, Luke's wife, Lauren and Marty Sprowles. After teasing blogs with enigmatic, homemade video clips for the past year, Indiana's most promising and perhaps most eccentric group finally unleashes their debut album, the stunning Enemy/Lover mixed by Kevin Ratterman (My Morning Jacket).

Dreamers of the Ghetto marries the sentiment of classic '80s film soundtracks to minimalist, romantic dream-rock, creating a unique environment that becomes almost instantly addicting. The triumphant, reach-for-the-stars attitude of veterans like U2 and Depeche Mode is paired with the gospel splendor of Spiritualized and ominous austerity of The xx, all carried by what Shaking Through calls the most amazing singer we've seen since Sharon Van Etten.

Dreamers of the Ghetto have mined a sound that is both timeless and nostalgic, and theyve done so with an earnest fearlessness and refreshing lack of irony. They are true, pure, and unbelievably powerful.
