How much more incredible then that Tramp sounds so profoundly effortless and singular-minded. Given the space to experiment, Van Etten pushed herself deeper than ever before, testing different approaches and rejecting many. Van Ettens records have been subtle and powerful, at once heartbreaking, luminous, intricate and beautiful. Now lush and triumphant, this is a fresh vision, and Van Etten has realized it with the same grace that made her first two releases so enduring.
Van Ettens debut, Because I Was In Love, was a sparse set of solo songs, all anchored by her instantly unmistakable voice. The intricate, understated record covered so much emotional ground within its 33 minutes, you couldn't possibly absorb it all at once, nor stay too long in one place along its journey. The following year, Van Etten added a full band to her music. Fans quickly picked favorites, then found their choices changing, often more than once.
An early fan of Van Etten, Dessner performed epic closer Love More with Justin Vernon of Bon Iver. When Van Etten found out, she contacted him, and almost immediately collaborative plans were made. Dessner had just completed work on his studio, and offered up his new space, as well as his insight as a savvy producer. But with both artists near-nonstop touring schedule, recording days had to be spread out, a few days here, a couple weeks there, and a lot of floating and flying in between.
The resulting album is an assured and strident one, and Tramp showcases an artist in control of her powers, incorporating vivid arrangements and instrumentation into the songwriting. It is a startling collection, filled with as much defiant rock (the precise venom of Serpents), as pious, minimal beauty (the breathtaking Kevins and Joke or a Lie). There are declarative hymns (in the earnest solemnity of All I Can), and remarkably sultry numbers (as in Magic Chords). Don't Want To Let You DownSharon Van Etten has never needed much room to make a grand statement. With four albums during the
last six years, she's become one of music's most astute new cartographers of the heart, able to capture
emotional trials and triumphs with incisive lines and a voice that loses nothing in the translation and
transmission of feelings. Her second record, epic, needed only seven tracks to live up to its title. 2012's
Tramp and last year's Are We There, went longer, but Van Etten managed still to squeeze enormous

It should come as no surprise, then, that the five-song EP I Don't Want to Let You Down offers documents
of surrender and disappointment, admission and longing in only 22 minutes. Produced by Van Etten and
Stewart Lerman, who also helmed Are We There, these songs are as sophisticated as anything Van Etten has
ever done. Supported by a string section during "I Always Fall Apart," Van Etten's voice rises alongside her
piano. Her prismatic harmonies betray the terror of the song's central admission and one of the new lyrical
cornerstones of her catalogue: "You know I always fall apart/It's not my fault/It's just my flaw/It's who I am."
During the title track, she slowly pushes her voice past an introductory murmur, as if scanning her
surroundings for the resolve to be stronger and more steadfast than she knows she has been. Building across
four minutes, the desperation of the title is expressed through guitars that get bigger, harmonies that get
broader. The chorus is a sing-along commandment, an indelible promise Van Etten makes to be better. The
War on Drugs' Adam Granduciel and David Hartley join Antibalas' Stuart Bogie, Peter Broderick and
Heather Woods-Broderick for "Pay My Debts." The longest song here, it's a cinematic number that smolders
like shoegaze before climaxing into an inescapable seesaw refrain.
The EP ends with a live rendition of "Tell Me." A demo from Tramp, but backed here by her four-piece
touring band, the tune becomes a kind of battle cry for respect and a charged pronouncement of Van Etten's
cultivated powers. It's a map of the singer's progression from an acoustic songwriter to a bona fide

enough to live your music without taking on the role of producer as well. Yet Van Etten knew it

yet this boldness had to be tempered. For this,Van Etten found a kindred spirit in veteran music
producer Stewart Lerman. Originally working together on Boardwalk Empire,they gently moved
into new roles,rallying around the idea of making a record together in Lerman's studio in New

Three years after the acclaimed HURTSVILLE and a move from the inner city of Sydney, Australia to the Blue Mountains, Jack Ladder returns with his new album Playmates. The album is produced by Kim Moyes of The Presets, and mixed by David Wrench (Jungle, FKA Twigs, Caribou,Seekae). The Dreamlanders - Kirin J. Playmates will be Jack Ladder's fourth album, and his first on Fat Possum. His previous two albums (2008's Love Is Gone and 2011's HURTSVILLE) were shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize. It's been a long journey to this point, and Playmates finds Jack Ladder at a creative apex, moving on from the darker roads into the curious, bold komische synthesizers which backlight Playmates. Ladder's latest work cogently recalls a time when albums were made to the parameters of the encroaching technology of the compact disc. But this album is where songs take precedence over an idea.
Playmates songs are muscular, raw - yet polished to the texture of a skyscraper. The lyrics themselves are haunting; they possess the poetic slur of a black-pupilled vision of romantic despair, love's unsure footing and a palpable air of Ballardian discord beneath the surface. The songs pulse with life. Synthesizers and drum machines rub shoulders with glam guitars and pedal steel, while above all, Ladder's granite baritone slashes at love and darkness like a heavy blade. He is a tender, persistent lover; a despairing prince at the battlements.
There is also the notable presence of Sharon Van Etten. On working with Jack Ladder, she says, When I first saw Jack Ladder...it blew me away. He's got a darkness to his vocals and lyrics but with a wink. It was really fun and an interesting challenge and his songs are killer. I feel lucky to have been a part of it.

How To Die In The NorthLost treasure needn't be found in the distant past; the 21st century hides many artists who disappeared into the great wide yonder. BC Camplight is one such example. The alter-ego of American songwriter Brian Christinzio released albums in 2005 and 2007, both gems of a certain psych-pop vintage, combining eloquent songwriting with a self-destructive bent. Christinzio certainly knew it - he's described himself as, "the guy who blew it."
But this sublime talent with the keening vocal and fearless approach to lyrical introspection has another chance. His new album 'How To Die In The North', recorded in his newly adopted home of Manchester, England, is a fantastically rich, stylistically diverse trip. From dramatic, layered pop to a haunted take on Sixties sunshine-pop, from blue-eyed soul to speedy surf-pop, from sparser piano balladry to psychedelic showstoppers and a grand finale that's part Nilsson and part Broadway showtune.
Originally from New Jersey, Christinzio started playing piano aged just four, inspired by his mum's Jerry Lee Lewis and Nilsson records and his Dad's classical collection. Depression and crippling hypochondria clashed with captaining the football team and a penchant for boxing. Post-school, he fell in with people, "willing to go through shit to be a musician," which saw him relocate to Philadelphia where he occasionally played live with Philly faves The War On Drugs and guested on Sharon Van Etten's album 'Epic'.
He's already done two sessions for long-term fan Marc Riley at BBC 6 Music, which featured Christinzio's band of Mancunians who he met at The Castle Hotel pub, a watering hole in the city centre particularly popular with musicians. Christinzio also heard John Grant's album on the jukebox there, which encouraged him to approach Bella Union. Grant's cocktail of depression and self-sabotage thwarted an outrageous talent, but he took his second chance. In The WildernessStranger Cat is the new project from Cat Martino, Sufjan Stevens' right hand woman for
the Age of Adz tour and record, as well as All Delighted People. Cat was also a recording
and touring member of Sharon Van Etten's band circa Epic. She appeared with The Shins
on SNL and Williamsburg Park, played in Passion Pit at Governor's Ball, and sings on the
Son Lux record Lanterns. She has had the pleasure to support Indians, Night Beds, Rufus
Wainwright, Marissa Nadler, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and Patrick Watson.
Cat retreated from Brooklyn, NY to winter in the Sierra Foothills to write and record
songs emerging from loops using her voice, synths, and percussion. With her pedal chain
and gear in a small cottage she explored the gamut from ethereal to turbulence. Simple
melodies or beats became powerful walls of sound melting through snowstorms, howling
winds and stark silence nestled inside gargantuan oaks and the infinite starry dome.
Joined by Sven Britt for a week, each of them traded making beats, or melodic parts on
casios, synths, guitars, branches and spoons, while the other recorded. Often a cat would
come to the door to listen, meowing to be let in. When it appeared daily they called it
Stranger Cat, and observed its alien supernatural powers, as she'd heard tell of the
Foothills' long history of UFO sightings and ghost haunts. One day they let Stranger Cat
in. The plump feline ate all the kitty food and left.

Electric TrimLee Ranaldo has announced details of a brand new album, Electric Trim.
Electric Trim was recorded in New York City and Barcelona in collaboration with producer RaÜl Refree Fernandez and extends the work of Ranaldo's Solo canon, the most recent being his 2013 album, Last Night On Earth.Through his collaboration with Fernandez, Ranaldo moves into some rich new sonic territories and production techniques, experimenting with electronic beats and samples alongside live players.
Ranaldo is a co-founder of Sonic Youth, a visual artist, producer and writer. In addition to Fernandez, he worked with several special guests on Electric Trim, including Sharon Van Etten who sings on six of the tracks and duets on Last Looks and Kid Millions (aka Man Forever) as well as longtime friend and collaborator Nels Cline (Wilco). In addition, the album features Ranaldo's band The Dust (fellow Sonic Youth member Steve Shelley, guitarist Alann Licht, and bassist Tim Luntzel).
Ranaldo collaborated with award-winning New York author Jonathan Lethem (Motherless Brooklyn / The Fortress of Solitude) for lyrics on six of the songs. The American artist Richard Prince, who previously painted the sleeve for Sonic Youth's 2004 album Sonic Nurse, created the artwork for the album.
The nine-track album marks a return to the Mute family for Ranaldo, who says: I'm so excited about this record, it represents new developments and directions for me and I can't wait to hit the road and play this music live. I'm also so pleased to partner with Mute for this release - it's like a homecoming of sorts as Sonic Youth's early records were released on Blast First / Mute. Based in Brooklyn, but raised in Louisville, singer-songwriter Dawn Landes has been writing
songs for most of her life, and at 33 already has more than a decade of experience as a

literature, Landes began honing her production and engineering skills, working at Stratosphere Sound
(owned by James Iha, Adam Schlesinger, and Andy Chase), and at Philip Glass'
personal recording studio, before launching Saltlands Studio in Brooklyn with partners Steve
Salett and Gary Maurer.
Her new album Bluebird was produced in collaboration with good friend Thomas Bartlett
(known for his work with The National, Sharon Van Etten, Rufus Wainwright, Antony and the
Johnsons, and many others), and features contributions from Tony Scherr, Rob Moose, and
Press coverage of Bluebird will understandably present this album as Dawn's answer to her
ex's divorce record. However, like any great songwriter, she's abstracting her personal
narratives enough to leave them open to interpretation and a larger meaning. Bartlett's
spartan production keeps the vibe intimate, making it easy to connect with these naked and
honest songs which manage to rise above the context in which they were written. In the end,
the fact that Bluebird is Landes' way of processing the overwhelming emotions she dealt

In Remission is the first track from the new album, and one where the band observes, Maybe the future's just a little bit weird; a statement that sets the tone of Rented World.
The Rust Belt punks are in a crucial period of growth. Now in their mid-20s, members Greg Barnett (guitar/vocals), Tom May (guitar/vocals), Eric Keen (bass), and Joe Godino (drums), seek a greater wisdom in life, even if they are old enough to know better. A theme that strongly permeates throughout the album.
Things start to feel a little more serious, said May. When we were younger we wrote fiery songs because at that age it's your world view. Now I look at the world and think 'well, maybe I'm not right all the time.'
Another change for the former Scranton, Pennsylvania housemates is their studio location. They entered Miner Street Studio for the first time in Fishtown, Philly in the fall of 2013. Jonathan Low, whose rich Americana influences can be heard on his work with The National, Sharon Van Etten, and Kurt Vile was enlisted to engineer the album. When writing the new material, the band recognized their shifts in their craft, shifts they knew would best be handled by Low. "We wanted to go to somebody who wasn't used to recording punk records, though it wasn't in a pretentious way, like we wanted to become an indie rock band, stated May.
The end result is an album that fearlessly collides the snarl of emo with grungy, 90s grit and exploring the celestial expanse of post-rock. Since the release of their debut album Idol Omen in 2009, Glass Ghost's founding members Eliot
Krimsky and Michael Johnson have kept busy. In addition to playing dozens of shows, including
a tour with White Rabbits, Johnson joined Dirty Projectors as their new drummer, Krimsky has
been collaborating with Here We Go Magic on keys, and the duo welcomed two new members to
the group, Tyler Wood on keyboards and percussion, and Aerial East on vocals. Like their debut,
LYFE was produced by Tyler Wood, who also produced Joan As Policewoman's 2014 album The
Classic. For the LYFE recording sessions, the group recruited many of their friends to contribute, including Joan Wasser of Joan As Policewoman, Nat Baldwin of Dirty Projectors, and
Christopher Tignor of Slow Six and Wires Under Tension. Pushing their songs to new levels by
working with Brooklyn's musical elite is nothing new for Glass Ghost. They worked with more
than a dozen of their friends from Brooklyn's music community, including Sharon Van Etten
(who in 2011 noted "Eliot Krimsky is one of my favorite writers."), Here We Go Magic's Luke
Temple, and Matt Iwanusa of Caveman, for their debut which was described by the New Yorker
as "elegant compositions of frosted indie pop," and by Time Out New York as "weird and mournful yet highly rhythmic.
On their new album LYFE, Krimsky (who's currently working on his M.A. in Media Studies at The
New School, where he's exploring the convergence of technological mediation, identity and
music) turns his observations of the absurd and mundane into metaphors about living in a
world where every detail about your life is harvested, quantified, and used by marketing companies to manipulate your behavior. Rather than sounding didactic or overly intellectual, the
songs provide windows into the band's internal world, as Krimsky's tender falsetto glides over

Bashed OutThis Is The Kit is the much beloved musical project of Kate Stables, born in England and based in Paris. Bashed Out is her band's third album, the result of an extended period collaboration with the record's producer Aaron Dessner (Sharon Van Etten, Local Natives). Dessner--the co-founder of the Brassland label--is best known for his work in The National. Indeed, the backing band he gathered for Bashed Out combines the talents of This Is The Kit's touring members (Rozi Plain, Jesse Vernon, Jamie Whitby-Coles), alongside a number of session players drawn from the Brooklyn music scene: Bryce Dessner, Thomas Bartlett (Doveman, The Gloaming), Matt Barrick (The Walkmen) and Ben Lanz (Beirut, The National) all made key instrumental contributions. This music is honest, human and humane-a folky-lovely slow-rumble. It's rock but of the hangover-friendly, stoner variety; it's folk but at a groovy speed. As notable as the music, however, is front woman Kate Stables, whose voice hearkens back to the classic singer-songwriter era--her distinctive, cutting vocals up front in the mix. It's a self-confidence gained since her previous album, 2011's Wriggle Out the Restless, which made her band a minor institution in the United Kingdom, especially on the radio which has embraced the group. This Is The Kit has received across the board support from BBC 6 DJs Lauren Laverne, Radcliffe & Maconie, Marc Riley, Cerys Matthews, and Mary Anne Hobbs--receiving further play from BBC Radio 1's Huw Stephens, Jen & Ally, and Phil Taggart. From Kate's earliest year growing up in the UK town of Winchester, she learned that great art takes time. In some ways the place I grew up is defined by being a Roman Saxon medieval cathedral city, she explains. Heather Woods Broderick excels at distilling her experiences into a soulful melancholy
that's enduring both for it's intimate relatable moments and its persistent
sense of mystery. Her uncanny ear for evocative production and gorgeous vocal
harmonies serves her well on her new album Glider. Throughout the album, the rich
dreamlike atmospheres she creates hint at a darkness looming on the horizon, while
the singularity of her ethereal voice always seems to linger long after the music has
As a talented multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, Heather has had the opportunity to
record and tour with plenty of incredible artists including Horse Feathers, Efterklang,
and Sharon Van Etten, which has kept her moving house and traveling around
the world for much of the past decade. She's currently living in Portland, Oregon,
but it's easy to imagine how her peripatetic lifestyle might diminish her sense of a
place to call home, while also strengthening her resilience, and her connection to
the reassuring constants in her life. As she explains Living in so many different
places has made me able to feel pretty comfortable everywhere. Her uncommon
sense of ease and grace, despite her hectic life, stems in part from her deeply
rooted and intertwined musical and familial background.
Music took root in Heather's life before she was even born, when her parents, both
musicians, met for the first time at one of her mom's gigs, which her dad was
attending. The two married and moved to Maine where Heather, second of three
children, was born at home. When she was 8-years-old the family moved across the
country to Oregon, and soon after moving, she asked if she could take piano
lessons, a practice she would continue through high school and into college. In
elementary school band she learned flute, and later picked up cello and guitar.
Though the songs on Glider aren't explicitly about touring, her life on the road
provides the backdrop and context for her songs that are often about relationships
that naturally fade as two people grow apart. I've realized that I really used the
songs on Glider and the time I put into writing them as a way to pay some attention
to things I'd been putting off, and to find some clarity around certain events, says
Heather. Building on what she learned from her first solo effort From the Ground
(2009), the dynamic structures and emotional complexity of her new songs are
evidence of how much she's grown as a person and as a songwriter. More confident
and self-assured than ever, songs like Fall Hard evolve from vulnerable bare piano
and vocals to hypnotizing swells of vocals reminiscent of Grouper or Cocteau Twins'
Elizabeth Fraser. Her voice soars in stride with a wall of guitars on Wyoming,
while Mama Shelter introduces a gentle groove as Heather conjures the sensuality
of Stevie Nicks. The album closes with the heartbreaking All for a Love, ending
with the refrain I can see our love is dragging you down. As dark as the sentiment
