Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward (tka She & Him) have shared information for their latest album, Classics. The 13-track collection of "carefully-selected, timeless standards" is duo's first album for the major label; their previous four albums, most recently last year's Volume 3, came out via Merge Records.

As previously reported, the pair recorded the covers album live alongside a 20-piece orchestra, "allowing a spontaneity that captured the spirit of the songs in their truest forms." As Deschanel explained, "It was a dream of ours to record these songs in a way that highlighted the brilliance of the songwriting and the beauty of their melodies."

    She Shot Me Down

She Shot Me Down is Frank Sinatra's last great album, a dark, brooding record of saloon songs delivered with an understated authority by Sinatra. Arranged and conducted by Gordon Jenkins and produced by Don Costa, the record largely consists of contemporary material, including five that were basically tailored for Sinatra. It's a dense, moody record that works spectacularly -- Sinatra's vocals are more alive and rich in detail than on Trilogy, and the concept is more concise and well-executed. She Shot Me Down might not consist of the classic saloon songs, but it has that feeling more than any of his other albums.

Mazzy Star, essentially the duo of David Roback (Rain Parade) and Hope Sandoval, formed in 1989 out of the ashes of Opal, Robacks previous band with former Dream Syndicate member Kendra Smith. She Hangs Brightly, their debut album was originally released on Rough Trade in 1990. A dreamy, psychedelic affair every bit as good as their sophomore breakout LP. Reissued on 180g vinyl.

    She Has No Strings Apollo

With each member of the band living on a different continent it took more than just a phone call to instigate a rehearsal. In February of 2002 (their 10th anniversary as a musical group), The Dirty Three reunited in Melbourne, Australia to demo some ideas they had been working on individually. They wound up with 20 songs, picked their favorites of the batch, and hit the road for two months to tour the new material. Along the way they met Fabrice Laureau, who among other things recorded part of the hit soundtrack to the film Amelie. He offered to record the band at a studio outside Paris, and thus was born She Has No Strings Apollo, the Dirty Three's sixth proper studio album.

Originally released in 2003, She Has No Strings Apollo is marked by the band's signature sounds crashing together with remarkable power, fury, and beauty. Subtle touches of piano and the addition of bass guitar (a first for the band) work beautifully behind the shimmering melodies created by Warren Ellis' soaring violin, Mick Turner's ethereal guitar, and Jim White's tidal drumming. The Dirty Three makes that rare brand of music that is raw and pure and expressive and untainted by artifice.

She Was Too Good To Me

Chet Baker was one of the most important representatives of the West Coast Cool Jazz movement. His heroin addiction is well documented with his exploits and misadventures wrapped in legendary anecdotes, but thankfully his life story never managed to overshadow his unmistakable talent. Chet Baker has one of the most recognisable sounds of all the jazz musicians in the cannon; his trumpet playing is intimate, simple and delicate with a hint of melancholy that tears at the heartstrings. She Was Too Good To Me was released in 1974 on Creed Taylor's CTI label after a 4 year absence from the scene. And what a comeback: excellent vocal Cool Jazz tunes are interlude with instrumental goodness from the undisputed master of the trumpet.

Never Were The Way She Was

180g LP In Gatefold Jacket Includes Art Print Poster

"Stetson demolishes clichÉsto unleash fresh, unexpected energies...at once
    exhilarating and frightening." - Pitchfork

"Calmly ravishing and emotionally centered...Ms. Neufeld has a warmly
expressive sound palette,." - The New York Times

Two of Constellation's acclaimed solo instrumental artists join forces on this
tremendous new album of original compositions for horn and violin.

Colin Stetson has developed a unique and renowned voice as a performer and
composer, chiefly on bass and tenor saxophones, where he rallies an array of
technical strengths and innovations (circular breathing, contact micing of his own
body and the body of his instrument, vocalizations through the reed) to make some
of the most captivatingly organic, darkly soulful and otherworldly solo instrumental
work of recent years. His brilliant trilogy of New History Warfare records (2007-
2013) has been resoundingly celebrated by critics, fans and fellow musicians
    across many genres: avant/jazz, modern classical/Miminalism, electronic/noise,
industrial/dark ambient, black metal and indie rock.

The solo violin work of Sarah Neufeld has emerged more recently, and especially
through 2011-2014, in the period between her primary band Arcade Fire's last two
albums. While no stranger to modern/minimalist composition with her Bell Orchestre
ensemble dating back to the early 2000s, Neufeld has lately forged a newly distinctive,
deliberate and evocative solo violin practice combining rock, folk, ambient and
modernist sensibilities, culminating with her debut solo album Hero Brother in 2013.

Stetson and Neufeld first began playing in duo formation while on tour together as
soloists in 2012, joining each other on stage for one or two of their respective
pieces. Stetson had also collaborated in the past with Bell Orchestre and Arcade
Fire, and with Neufeld and Shahzad Ismaily in an improv trio dating back to 2010
(including the Blue Caprice soundtrack). Duo compositions for their debut album
emerged throughout 2014, and were road-tested that spring with performances at
the Festival de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville (Canada) and Moers Festival
(Germany). The album was recorded without overdubbing, looping, sampling,
cutting or pasting at their farmhouse attic studio in rural Vermont by Hans Bernhard
and mixed in Montreal by Mark Lawson (Arcade Fire).

Never were the way she was is guided by the metaphorical narrative of the life of
a girl who ages slow as mountains; excited, exalted, and ultimately exiled in her
search for a world that resembles her experience. The album's expansive sonic
trajectory and multiplicity of structures and voicings belies the fundamental
economy of two acoustic instruments combining in real time. The result is a musical
chronicle that powerfully establishes its own spatial and temporal horizon, a
soundtrack that requires no images but profoundly compels the imaginative. From
the filigreed ostinato polyrhythms of "The sun roars into view" and "In the vespers"
to the stately long tones of "And they still move", the dark drone-inflected sea-saw
waltz of "With the dark hug of time" to the growling, pulsing thrust of the album's
epic centerpiece "The rest of us", Stetson and Neufeld offer up an incredible (and
impressively diverse) integration of composition, performance, timbre and texture
while holding their respective instruments in sparkling juxtaposition. Never were
the way she was is a sum quite definitively and thrillingly greater than its parts.

    1. The sun roars into view
    2. Won't be a thing to become
    3. In the vespers
    4. And still they move
    5. With the dark hug of time

    Volume One

She & Him is a story of musical serendipity: two artists, each renowned in their own creative fields, meet and recognize a certain shared nostalgia. The result is destined to be one of the musical highlights of the year.

Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward first met to record a version of Richard and Linda Thompson's When I Get To The Border for a movie soundtrack. Immediately struck by one another's talents and finding an instant rapport Zooey let slip that she wrote her own songs which she recorded alone at home on her computer. Somewhat shy about anyone hearing these musical morsels she eventually sent the demos to Ward who was instantly impressed. They soon reconvened at his Portland studio to begin work.

Embracing the warm sound of early analog recordings, Volume One is more than just a showcase for Zooey's rich and endearing voice; it's a distinctive and endlessly charming album. The songs themselves give a respectful nod to the likes of Dusty Springfield, Linda Ronstadt and The Zombies while Ward's production gives them just the right amount of golden era sheen. Whether Zooey's channeling Ronnie Spector as on I Was Made For You or joining Ward in turning The Beatles I Should Have Known Better into a seductive hula guitar duet, the results are always captivating.

    Christmas Party

Christmas Party is the new holiday album from She & Him, the duo comprised of Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward. Christmas Party is the follow up to their wildly popular A Very She And Him Christmas, and this new collection features guest appearances by Jenny Lewis, The Chapin Sisters and Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley.

Christmas Party is replete with holiday favorites - including classics like Darlene Love and Phil Spector's Marshmallow World, Bing Crosby's Mele Kalikimaka and Chuck Berry's Run Run Rudolph. But, Ward and Deschanel also may introduce listeners to the more obscure tracks such as folk-singer Vashti Bunyon's Coldest Night of the Year and the lesser know Sinatra track Christmas Memories. Pop favorites such as Mariah Carey's All I Want for Christmas Is You and The Chipmunks Christmas Don't Be Late round out the celebration. Throughout the album is She & Him's signature stripped down take on production.

It was the positive experience they had recording their first Christmas record, A Very She & Him Christmas, in 2011 that brought M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel back for another round of holiday cheer. Much like their first Christmas record, She & Him bring an organic and minimalistic approach to their holiday covers. Highly produced classics get stripped down to their most fundamental elements, a style perfectly aligned with their vision. You won't find any accompanying orchestra or full-piece brass bands on Christmas Party. Instead, She & Him rely on friends and family to lend a simple and authentic holiday vibe to this album, one where the guest list speaks for itself.

In the years between the two holiday records, She & Him released Vol. 3, an album of original songs, and kept their affection for covers alive with Classics, a compilation of covers of their favorite standards. Throughout these intervening years and albums, Zooey and Ward gradually culled a new collection of holiday songs to re-interpret, tucking them away like a stack of presents growing under a tree. As Christmas Party comes to a close, the listener can take solace in knowing the door on this gathering is never fully shut. The sing-alongs, the happy accidents, the quiet moments with loved ones - they're all waiting for you whenever you wish to immerse yourself in the splendor of the season. As Ward himself says, Music is one of the purest ways into Christmas.

    Volume Three

With fourteen songs-11 Deschanel originals and three covers-
Volume 3 is an effortlessly effervescent, bleached-out-in-the-sun pop
record. The album features some of the most dynamic, complex
songs Deschanel has ever written, allowing for tempo shifts, disco
grooves, string arrangements on multiple tracks, and horn flourishes
that perfectly suit the She & Him sound. Produced by M. Ward and
recorded in Los Angeles, Portland, and New York City, Volume 3
features guest contributions from NRBQ's Joey Spampinato, Mike
Watt, Tilly and the Wall, Pierre de Reeder from Rilo Kiley, and Tom
    Hagerman from Devotchka.

Since the release of the band's album Volume Two in 2010, much
has happened to both She and to Him. Deschanel, whose television
show New Girl has cemented her status as a sitcom star, continued
to hone her songwriting skills, writing the theme song for her new
show in addition to being nominated for a GRAMMY for Best
Original Song for the movie Winnie the Pooh. She wrote songs for
Volume 3 during small pockets of downtime while filming New Girl,
as Ward toured the world behind his latest solo creation, A
Wasteland Companion, which was released to massive critical acclaim
last year. Together and separately, the duo has sold over a million
albums domestically-a testament to their classic sonic
arrangements, their rich, incomparable voices, and their ability to
craft pitch-perfect, Brill Building-esque choruses around timeless,
    universal themes

    Volume Two

She & Him make music for an eternal springtime, when the temperature is warm enough to go riding with the top (or at least the windows) rolled down and the radio turned up. They occupy an alternate universe where the saddest of songs feel as warm as sun showers; the rain may be coming down, but somewhere nearby, everything looks bright. What began as a fascinating, no-strings attached collaboration on 2008's Volume One has evolved into a bonafide touring band, and She & Him are here to stay.

Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward are as comfortable and complementary a musical pair as Les Paul and Mary Ford; hearing them again on Volume Two feels like getting together with two old friends. This time, the harmonies have grown more angelically layered, the string arrangements more dramatic, the songwriting even sharper and more confident. But as with Volume One, the prevailing mood is bittersweet, dreamy and romantic. All songs (except 4 and 7) written by Zooey Deschanel. Produced by M. Ward.

    Voyage To India

India Arie seems comfortable in her own body. She told us as much on both Video and Brown Skin from her stunning debut album, Acoustic Soul, which celebrated the diversity of feminine beauty, self-acceptance, and spirituality. She addresses similar themes on her second outing, although much of her original soul-scouring fire is gone. While she still preaches self-empowerment, many of her lyrics veer toward the trite, and that's not where we expected to go on this Voyage to India. In fact, there are very few self-revelatory moments like the ones on Soul. Arie seems bent on journeying to the center of womankind's mind, rather than unearthing more of her own autobiography, casting herself as adviser to the disempowered. But that is not where Arie shines. When she strips her voice down to its unvarnished essence--leaving all the imperfections in the mix--she is a lithe, ethereal presence. She's capable of raising chills, as when she sings of a man who foretells his death on Good Man. Or on Complicated Man, where she lets her voice run ragged, brimming with raw emotion while describing her imperfect love. Despite some glibness, this is still a voyage worth taking. --Jaan Uhelszki

    The Blade

Ashley Monroe spent her childhood in Knoxville, Tennessee, where she immersed herself in all varieties of music ranging from country-she's not-too-distantly related to members of the legendary Carter Family-to rock, pop, rap and even opera. When she was 11, Monroe won a talent contest singing "I Want To Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart" and two years later her father gave Ashley her first guitar. She developed a passion for writing songs, discovering that she could easily communicate her thoughts and sentiments through a six-string and her dynamic, exceptional voice.

In 2008, Ashley cut a highly praised EP with singer-songwriter Trent Dabbs and a few years later, at the invitation of Jack White, she sang background vocals on an album he was producing by the iconic country-rockabilly singer Wanda Jackson. And just to prove how versatile she is, Monroe also contributed vocals to the track "Bruises" on the 2012 album California 37 by the rock band Train.
But one of the most rewarding artistic adventures for Ashley to date has been the Pistol Annies, a trio she co-formed in 2011with her friend Miranda Lambert, whose chart-topping hit "Heart Like Mine" Ashley co-penned, and newcomer Angaleena Presley. Pistol Annies have provided Monroe with yet another outlet for her music. Their album, Hell on Heels, garnered rave reviews. The All Music Guide called the trio "a remarkably democratic supergroup" while veteran music critic Robert Christgau gave the album an A grade, citing its "expertly executed tunes."

Feist has been known to take her time between albums, but it has been a long stretch since 2011's Metals. She has since provided guest vocals on Peaches' Rub, appeared in music videos for Jenny Lewis and Kevin Drew, and is set to contribute to Broken Social Scene's new album. Now she announces Pleasure, produced by Feist with Mocky and Renaud Letang.

    All Her Fault

Holly Golightly has made over 20 albums and appeared on countless more, but she never had a recording experience like the one she had making the new Holly Golightly and the Brokeoffs release All Her Fault. Golightly and her partner Lawyer Dave spent nearly six months on the project. "It has never taken me that long to get through 12 tracks," she admits. "I don't have the patience for endlessly going over things. I want things done quickly and this was like pulling a Dave-shaped log along at times."

Don't expect All Her Fault to sound radically different from their earlier releases. It's still a raw, rough-hewn stew of twisted roots music forged by the duo's distinct musical interests - she listens to late '50s/early '60s R&B and he loves rock 'n' roll. "I'm not looking to achieve something that hasn't been achieved before," she confesses. "We just what we do. The songs are really all that changes."

    Better Than Home

    "She's all sizzle " - Associated Press

"She has a talent with no ceiling." - Huffington Post

Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter, Beth Hart, has never sounded better (musically and spiritually) than she does on her new album, Better Than Home. When she sings clocks stop, hearts dance and neck-hair tingles it's that compelling! A Planetmosh critic said, "I was just blown away by Beth's voice!", and American Songwriter proclaimed, "Beth's tough, throaty voice she uses that powerful instrument to best effect on dramatic, arena filling ballads."

What makes Better Than Home quite possibly her greatest album is that it is her most introspective work ever, because it goes to the depth of her soul, revealing terrible pain in her past, family issues and personal demons as well as her coming to grips with them and using that knowledge to find the real beauty in her life.
