    Valtari

You can forgive Sigur Rós for being hazy on the details of the recording of their sixth album Valtari. It's either the album they always wanted to make, or the album they almost didn't make, depending on how you look at it.

In 2011, the band started the painstaking forensic task of piecing together a cohesive and magical work from disparate constituent parts. If this sounds unromantic, the results are anything but. Something alchemical occurs when the four members of Sigur Rós are in the room together, and even if Valtari is more a "studio based" album than any of its predecessors (which usually start life as rehearsal room jams), the long hours of experimentation and unsentimental editing have yielded incredibly persuasive results.

In English Valtari translates as "steamroller" and there is something right about the title in terms of the process of its creation. The last three tracks of Valtari are like one long slow gorgeous fade out, as the listener, having been softened up by the slightly more "songy" start to the album, is left with the subtly shifting, deep introspective beauty of the last 24 minutes.

After that, penultimate track, Valtari is like the far heart of the album; eight minutes that feel like being alone in row boat on a chill day, small irregular waves lapping the wooden hull as a dense fog bank rolls in and ice slowly encases every surface. Below the fathomless green, deep endures. Gatefold 2LP with MP3 coupon.

    Agaetis Byrjun

Reykjavík-based noise quartet Sigur Rós are the biggest band in their native Iceland, which should say much, much more about the collective insanity of that earthquake-ridden, blizzard-beaten crag of an island than anything to do with Sigur Rós's sound. But in their music, Sigur Rós reflect all the breathtaking glory of the Icelandic wastes--a fairy-tale explosion of unhinged elemental majesty that's finally crystallized here, their debut European release. Poised somewhere between the haunting soundscapes of Labradford and the lilting Celtic falsetto of Enya, Agaetis Byrjun is a truly breathtaking listen. Frontman Jon Por Birgisson sings in a language that Sigur Rós dub Hopelandic--an otherworldly mutation of Icelandic, sung in the falsetto cadence of angels; similarly, he plays his guitar with a violin bow, opening the floodgates for brilliant waves of feedback. And while it's the opening Svefn-G-Englar that's Sigur Rós' moment to date, there's far more that they have to offer; listen to the pomp and flourish of a full orchestra on Flugufrelsarinn, or the awe-inspiring near-religious mantra of Ny Batteri.

    Riceboy Sleeps

Known primarily for his haunting falsetto and other-worldly presence as the singer in Sigur Ros, Jon Thor Birgisson has, together with his partner Alex Somers, been exhibiting artwork and staging exhibitions under the name Riceboy Sleeps for two or three years now, including the release of a limited edition picture book. A couple of months back the early fruits of the musical side of this collaboration surfaced in physical form for the first time, with the track Happiness, on the exemplary Dark Was The Night Red Hot compilation.

Riceboy Sleeps is human in a profound and verging-on spiritual way. It says nothing, literally, and yet living through its 68-minutes you emerge feeling much has been revealed. Its slowly evolving abstract landscapes are both edifying and life-affirming. The record works as a whole, and exists in a contemplative dream-state, unconstrained and mesmeric, seemingly outside time. The record, however, is more active than its apparent antecedents in the ambient output of Brian Eno, and other deliberately low-impact works. Riceboy Sleeps is awash with both tension and stimuli, as well as being frequently, and stunningly, beautiful.

Played solely on acoustic instruments in Iceland and featuring long-time string collaborators Amiina, as well as the Kopavogsdaetur choir, Riceboy Sleeps has a suitably organic feel. The full-length Riceboy Sleeps album (the name having migrated from artist moniker to album title) is set to subtly redefine expectations of slow and elegiac instrumental music in 2009.

    Go

Jonsi has spent more than a decade writing epic compositions with Sigur Ros, creating some of the finest, most acclaimed albums of the last ten years. The choice to make an album of solo recordings came together as a solution to a backlog of songs Jonsi had written that didn't seem to fit within the Sigur Ros context. Go is a different beast entirely. Ecstatic, dramatic and alive, it features Jonsi's signature vocals throughout, with the majority of the songs sung in English.

Not a straight ahead pop record, nor rock, folk, ambient or electronic, it encompasses all of these to create an expansive musical palette that's been brought to life by Jonsi alongside a number of free-spirited collaborators. Chief among these is Nico Muhly, the Philip Glass protege who is renowned for his work with Bjork, Antony & The Johnsons, Bonnie Prince Billy and Grizzly Bear. Also in the mix is the percussive genius of Samuli Kosminen, whose original drumming powers many of the songs along so you have a sonic landscape that bears little relation to anything else around today, yet explodes from the speakers with sheer happiness and wonder, wide-eyed and eager to be heard. The album was recorded in Iceland and Connecticut, was co-produced by Jonsi, Alex Somers and Peter Katis (The National, Interpol) and was mixed by Tom Elmhirst in London.

    Von

The heaps of praise during 2000 surrounding 1999's Ágætis Byrjun brought surprisingly little attention to Sigur Rós' first record, released in 1997. Remaining available only through the band's Icelandic label, it took some effort to obtain, but those who did get a copy probably found it to be just as adventurous as Agætis. Though darker and more fractured than the string-laden nooks of the follow-up, it's just as sprawling and outright bombastic. It's remarkable that such a young band would be this experimental at this stage in their lifespan, but the sheer breadth gets to be an albatross. Poking fun at '70s prog rock is just as easy as shooting at cement gargoyles on a suburban rooftop, especially when you're an indie kid or a fan of post-rock. But Sigur Rós makes Yes look like the Minutemen. Whittled down to 40 minutes, Von would be considerably more effective than it already is. As a mood setter, the 10-minute opening track really takes about three minutes to do what it needs, and a few other spots seem to drag on for the sake of sucking time. That doesn't prevent Von from being impressive, veering from Gavin Bryars-style aquatic minimalism to My Bloody Valentine-style dream pop. Varying states of isolationist ambience run throughout, whether evoking unrest or tranquil rest. You can practically envision a stray headboard floating through the Sinking of the Titanic-type passages, and the lush Myrkur comes from a planet where MBV's Kevin Shields and Kitchens of Distinction's Julian Swales are accorded the level or worship that Earth gives to Hendrix and Clapton. And then there's that voice, one of the most distinctly unintelligible voices since the Cocteau Twins' Liz Fraser. Boy? Girl? One would be hard-pressed to guess without liner notes. Based on pure sound, Von is just as much of a treat as the acclaimed follow-up.

Med Sud I Vid Spilum Endalaust

Inspired by the unfettered feeling of the acoustic performances filmed during Heima, Sigur Ros adopted a looser approach in creating their fifth album Med Sud I Vid Spilum Endalaust. The album consequently is fresher and more human than anything they've previously recorded.

Rough edges, cracked notes, and the sound of fingers on strings are audible resulting in tracks (e.g. Illgresi) that prove to be the band's sparsest and most affecting work to date. Worry not though, plenty of electric guitar can be heard throughout the album ensuring Sigur Ros' commitment to challenging sonic limitations.

Med Sud I Vid Spilum Endalaust is truly a groundbreaking album for Sigur Ros. It's the first time they've attempted to write, record, mix, release and support (by touring) an album in the same year. Notoriously known for their laborious writing/recording style and their Icelandic roots, Sigur Ros decided to record an album outside of Iceland for the first time. Recording, mixing and mastering sessions took place in such un-Reykjavik cities as New York (Sear Sound and Sterling Sound), London (Abbey Road and Assault & Battery) and Havana. The result is pretty much their leave home album, the anti-Heima.

The opening track, Gobbledigook, is a manifesto setter with its shifting/no time signature. On the last track, All Alright, Sigur Ros find themselves singing a song solely in English for the first time. The seventh track, Ára Bátur, was performed with a full orchestra and the London Oratory Boys Choir. This was recorded in one take with no overdubs and the result was 90 people playing at once and just one perfect take. This is their first album working with Flood (U2, Depeche Mode, PJ Harvey) and the first since their debut to not be recorded with Ken Thomas. It was a true co-production, one that found Sigur Ros breaking out of old molds/habits. Double LP on high quality 180g vinyl.

Sigur Ros' fifth album is the Icelandic band's most worldly, varied and impetuous. The band achieves a new unity in variety here, winding from near-glam romp and fireside-folk warmth to slow-climb grandeur with an attention to the repeated payoff in a sturdy hook and hum-along chorus. (4 Stars) - Rolling Stone

Old-fashioned psychedelic grandeur is revived with otherwordly majesty and inexorable crescendos, a typically majestic but uncharacteristically summery album, with jolts of percussive energy and connotations of sunlight and air. - New York Times

    Winter is coming!

Game of Thrones is the wildly successful fantasy drama television series created for HBO by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. It is an adaptation of A Song Of Ice And Fire, George R. R. Martin's series of fantasy novels. Its fourth season premiered on HBO in April 2014, with already two more seasons in preparation. The series, set on the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos at the end of a decade-long summer, interweaves several plot lines. The first follows the members of several noble houses in a civil war for the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms; the second covers the rising threat of the impending winter and the mythical creatures of the North; the third chronicles the attempts of the exiled last scion of the realm's deposed dynasty to reclaim the throne. The series explores issues of social hierarchy, religion, loyalty, corruption, civil war, crime, and punishment.

Game of Thrones has attracted record numbers of viewers on HBO and obtained an exceptionally broad and active international fan base. It also received widespread acclaim by critics. The series has won numerous awards and nominations, including nominations for a Primetime Emmy Award and the Golden Globes.

The soundtrack was scored by German composer Ramin Djawadi, best known for his Grammy-nominated score for Iron Man, Pacific Rim, Clash Of The Titans and for the TV series Prison Break. The fourth season soundtrack also features a single The Rains Of Castamere by Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós. The band also appears in the second episode of the fourth season, as a group of musicians serenading the Royal Couple at their wedding reception.

All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone

Known for bringing an emotional heft and sense of hope to a usually placid genre, Explosions In The Sky have experienced the kind of meteoric rise in popularity that flies in the face of music industry convention. Their songs are too long for radio play or commercial music videos; they avoid performing in LiveNation/Clear Channel venues; they didn't jump to a major label; and they don't sing. After scoring the film Friday Night Lights, they took two years to work on this record, which is a massive leap forward, showcasing a broader instrumental range and their most focused, efficient songwriting. Rat Film marks Deacon's first full record devoted to modern composition. In between his four ecstatic electronic-pop albums, Deacon has frequently flexed the 21st-century classical muscles he first developed studying at SUNY Purchase's Conservatory of Music. He's provided soundtracks for film and stage giants ranging from Francis Ford Coppola's Twixt to New York City Ballet's presentation of Justin Peck's "The Times Are Racing." Deacon's array of compositional commissions includes pieces with Kronos Quartet at Lincoln Center, Sigur Rós at the L.A. Philharmonic, and So Percussion at the Barbican Centre.

Rat Film offers the first recorded document of this parallel career-and both as a self-contained album and a companion piece to an equally potent film, it astounds.

While writing FORGET, Xiu Xiu released the lauded Plays the Music of Twin Peaks, collaborated with Mitski on a song for an upcoming John Cameron Mitchell film, and scored an experimental reworking of the Mozart opera, The Magic Flute. All of this frantic, external activity lead to a softly damaged dreaminess and broadened intent that has not been heard before in other Xiu Xiu works.Standout track, "Wondering" is one of the catchiest boogie pop gems in the Xiu Xiu catalog, but like much of FORGET, it still bears an underlying tension that manifests differently in each piece. FORGET was produced by John Congleton (Blondie, Sigur Ros), Greg Saunier of Deerhoof and Xiu Xiu's own Angela Seo.

    Neptune

Neptune is the major label debut album from Boston progressive folk duo, Tall Heights. Neptune is the follow up to 2015's Holding On, Holding Out EP which was met with critical acclaim from outlets like NPR and The Wall Street Journal who compared their emotive harmonies and poignant lyrics to the likes of Simon & Garfunkel, Sigur Ros and Bon Iver. Of particular note is the track "Spirit Cold", the lead single from the forthcoming release.

The multi-talented singer songwriters, composers and instrumentalists featuring Paul Wright on cello/vocals and Tim Harrington on acoustic guitar/vocals got their start busking on the streets of Boston, growing up in a neighboring town in Massachusetts. Neptune is a far lusher construct than those early acoustic days - along with pristine and emotive vocal harmonies, there's subtly chugging electric guitar and a spare descending bassline on "Iron in the Fire," ethereal synthesizers and a spacious drum part on "Spirit Cold," a brittle splash of percussion to open "Backwards and Forwards" and feedback created by two cellphones on "Cross My Mind."

    Impressions

Following the release of their acclaimed 2012 debut, Everything Touching, Tall Ships were championed by both the BBC and NME, selling out shows across the UK and headlining the BBC Introducing Stage at Reading & Leeds Festival. Their debut earned a wealth of critical praise, with Pitchfork citing its penchant for the more swashbuckling strains of Okkervil River and Modest Mouse, M83's downcast glimmer, and Sigur Ros' misty yawn, and BBC Music claiming, the trio's debut displays dizzying craftsmanship.

After a patch of personal turmoil and a falling out with their record label, the band found themselves at a crossroads. Where lesser bands might have crumbled under the weight of expectation and adversity, Tall Ships regrouped and retreated to keyboardist Jamie Field's country home to re-adopt a similarly DIY recording process to that which birthed Everything Touching years earlier. As such, Impressions bristles with a fresh intensity: it's a set that feels constantly on a knife edge of unpredictability, capable within a single song of being both disconcertingly tender and universal - easily the most ambitious and anthemic music the band has ever written, marking them out as one of the UK's most promising rock bands but one worn with the battle scars of doubt, fragility and lessons learned the hard way.

    Fire Within

Critically-acclaimed British singer/songwriter Birdy is pleased to announce details of her brand new album Fire Within.

Birdy commented - "It's been an incredible few years since I released my debut album back in 2011. I've been writing new songs and I'm so excited for people to hear them. They come straight from my heart."

In this new phase her fans will see Birdy come to the forefront as a songwriter in her own right, having written/co-written all of the 11 tracks on the new album. Over the past year, Birdy's been in the studio collaborating with some of the biggest names in the business including Ryan Tedder (Beyonce), Dan Wilson (co-wrote and produced 'Someone Like You' for Adele), Rich Costey (Muse, Arctic Monkeys, Sigur Ros) and Ben Lovett from Mumford & Sons, whom she's collaborated with in the past. She's also worked with some amazing musicians including Rage Against the Machine bass player Timmy C and Paul Jackson Jnr and Omar Hakim (Daft Punk's band on latest album Random Access Memories). The Album also sees Birdy expanding on her already amazing musical abilities by taking on the role of guitarist in both the recording sessions and live performances.

The music industry sees artists come and go on a regular basis. Plans change, life gets in the way and bands fade away. Occasionally we're lucky enough to see an important band return from their silence: enter At The Drive In. While At The Drive In was quiet, the members (Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Cedric Bixler-Zavala, Tony Hajjar and Paul Hinojos) were incredibly busy, selling millions of albums, winning Grammys and putting out a lot of quality music with their other projects (The Mars Volta, Antemasque, Gone Is Gone and many more).

After a 15 year break, the band returned to the studio to create the follow-up to 2000's Relationship of Command. It's the moment fans have been waiting for since their return to the stage as 2012 Coachella and Lollapalooza headliners prepare for in·ter a·li·a. Produced by the band's own Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Rich Costey (Muse, Sigur Rós, Santigold), in·ter a·li·a includes eleven songs that resonate the classic At The Drive In intensity that fans love, while breaking the band's 15-year drought with something fresh and exciting, that slides right into 2017.

Their impressive catalog has earned At The Drive In positions on the Billboard Top 200 chart, spots on various "Greatest Albums" lists, and performances on David Letterman, Jools Holland, Conan O'Brien and more. This album is sure to provide nothing less. The band will be touring throughout 2017 to support this release, as well as perform on late night television. The silence is finally broken resume transmission.

Game Of Thrones Season 5 Soundtrack

    180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl

    Island Intervals

That Joel Thibodeau's slender, winsome voice is at once so comforting
and so unsettling might be the greatest of his many strengths. Reed-thin
but sturdy, youthful but somehow ageless, its deep benevolence is also
slightly eerie, and the way he gently walks the line between intense
feeling and contemplative remove lets him sing from a timeless place
where he evokes the beauty of vanished people and places, sweetness
too profound for words, loss too great for tears.

    Like Nico's, Jimmy Scott's, or Phil Elverum's, Joel's is a voice that
demands its own sonic and lyrical world, and with Island Intervals, his
third record as Death Vessel (and second for Sub Pop), we're treated to
the sound of him finding a rich and strange new home among new friends
in Iceland who probably saw him as a long-lost relative. Joel's an inveterate
and intuitive wanderer; when I met him years ago, he'd just spent a few
months traveling the United States on Greyhound buses, sometimes
sleeping rough, and making a record from found moments.

Island Intervals springs from a more recent journey. For his first album
since 2008's acclaimed Nothing Is Precious Enough for Us, Joel traveled
to Reykjavík on an invitation from Sigur Rós singer Jónsi and producer
Alex Somers, where they spent three months together conjuring an album
that's both a song cycle and a window into a mysterious and singular
landscape. Island Intervals wraps Joel's voice and furtive guitar in sounds
that evoke not so much a band playing as elemental forces of earth and
water; Pete Donnelly (The Figgs, NRBQ), Samuli Kosminen (Múm) and
Thorvaldur Doddi Thorvaldsson assist Somers in creating a rich and
multi-layered world that sounds, at times, like a well-tuned forest sighing
and bending in a gale, or the deep cracks and booms of a glacier calving
its way to the sea. Jónsi also joins Joel on vocals for the track "Ilsa
    Drown."

Island Intervals lives in the spaces between running away and letting
go, and finds its author embracing a life whose most solid, real moments
loom and vanish, like a range of mountains that emerges from a bank
of low clouds, and just as suddenly slips away.

    Interiors

Interiors, Cameron Mesirow's second full-length release as
Glasser, is a more considered, confident, and much more
sharply personal album than its predecessor. It's central
themes are love and anxiety and the spatial constraints
of both in the landscape of one's life. In the three years
since Cameron released her breakout debut "Ring", she
toured around the world (with Jónsi of Sigur Rós, The XX,
Delorean, among others) and left her California home for
New York. Along the way, she discovered a new partner
in producer Van Rivers (Fever Ray, Blonde Redhead)
whose background in techno production added expansive
spatial elements to her music that reflect both the looming,
condensed architecture of Glasser's new adopted home
as well as the intricate internal worlds she conjures in on
    her own.

The tension between interior and exterior space fills the
album. In architect Rem Koolhaas' book Delirious New
York, which Mesirow credits as an inspiration, the author
suggests that New York's massive, stoic-faced buildings
are monuments rife with secrets. Interiors is Cameron's
attempt to exorcise and address some of those metropolitan
secrets. "I thought a lot about the physical impositions in
my life, and about the fluid emotional boundaries in my
relationships," Mesirow says. "There's no limit to what can
be said about these structures. I can't help but live and
work in them, exploring their many folds."

The instrumentation of the album is a mixture of synthetic
and organic sounds, real strings, reeds and drums
combined with programmed ones, a purposeful coupling
of natural enemies. "I like music where you're not thinking
about what a specific instrument is," she says. "An
instrument-less quality. It doesn't come from a band, but
from a whisper in the wind." As on Ring there are sounds
used for unlikely purposes; vocals used as percussive
accents, or melodic themes assembled from environmental
sounds. The song "Design" illustrates this with Cameron's
own pitched-down vocals serving as a writhing bass line
in the frantic depiction of lust. The Glasser we find on
Interiors is smoother and smokier, more confident and
defined against an increasingly stoic electronic music
backdrop. The effect is a paragon of sonic architecture--a
soundspace that's packed tight but never feels crowded.

    Ensen

Emel rose to prominence after her 2007 recording "Kelmti Horra (My Word Is Free)" became a viral anthem during the Arab Spring, earning her the title "voice of the Tunisian revolution" and eventually an invitation to perform at the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. Her powerful, heartfelt music defies genres, melding together electronica, Tunisian textures and a cinematic universe. Combining the political and the personal, Emel expresses not just her feelings but those of so many people. "It is important to me to try to give voice to the silenced. I also believe, though, that art is its own message, that especially when you come from a repressive place, or an ignored place, the simple act of saying, 'Hey, I'm here,' is important - the art of presence and insistence."

On her sophomore album, Ensen, Emel distills her blend of acoustic and electronic sounds into a style that's even more uniquely her own, citing Ben Frost, Samaris and James Blake as influences. With several producers, including Valgeir Sigurðsson (Sigur Ros, Feist) and her main collaborator French/Tunisian producer Amine Metani, Emel recorded the new album across seven countries and two continents. "We recorded acoustic takes of the songs, using a lot of North African drumming. Then we started creating our own library of organic beats running the percussions through our homemade effects and setups. They sounded like nothing we'd ever heard." "Ensen Dhaif (Helpless Human)," the title track and lead single, is propelled by sparkling gumbri (a Tunisian three stringed big bass lute, used in Gnawa music), feverish zukra (Tunisian flute), trance-inducing bendirs (North African frame drums) and heavy kick drum.

Blessed with an exceptionally wide vocal range and expressive voice, Emel's impassioned live performances go far beyond the sounds on the album. "I never perform the same way twice. I am more of a show person than a studio artist; the songs have a second life once the recording is done. I'm very free with my vocals. My musicians adapt to any direction I want to take."
