This Is Sinatra Volume TwoAnother collection of Sinatra singles and B-sides with backings courtesy of Nelson Riddle, following 1956's This Is Sinatra!. The Man I Love (Pure Pleasure)Around the same time that Peggy Lee decamped her longtime label home, Capitol Records, for what turned out to be a five-year sojourn at Decca Records in 1952, an apparently washed-up Frank Sinatra signed with Capitol. In 1957, when Lee returned to Capitol, Sinatra had re-established himself as a major recording artist. Meanwhile, the recording world had changed with the emergence of the 12-inch LP as an industry standard. The Man I Love, Lee's first recording for Capitol in the format after re-signing, matched her with the company's flagship artist, Sinatra, who was credited as the album's conductor, his name printed on the front cover in the same size as Lee's. A year earlier, Sinatra had conducted his Tone Poems Of Color album for Capitol, and though the singer did not read music and relied on arranger Nelson Riddle, he again proved himself able to make his intentions clear in working with Lee.
The Man I Love is a concept album in the manner pioneered by Sinatra at Capitol, a group of 12 songs chosen to express a single theme. That theme, as the title suggests, is a woman's unwavering devotion to a man, as expressed in songs often composed by gilt-edged songwriters (Gershwin, Arlen, Rodgers, Kern, etc.) and taken from Broadway shows. The result is a superb pairing of singer, conductor, and arranger on an album that re-conceives Lee as a Capitol recording artist in the Sinatra concept album mold.

About Pure Pleasure
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Live In ParisRecorded at the historic Olympia Theatre in Paris in November 2001, this is Diana Krall's first live album. In The Wee Small HoursExpanding on the concept of Songs for Young Lovers!, In the Wee Small Hours was a collection of ballads arranged by Nelson Riddle. The first 12 album recorded by Sinatra, Wee Small Hours was more focused and concentrated than his two earlier concept records. It's a blue, melancholy album, built around a spare rhythm section featuring a rhythm guitar, celesta, and Bill Miller's piano, with gently aching strings added every once and a while. Within that melancholy mood is one of Sinatra's most jazz-oriented performances -- he restructures the melody and Miller's playing is bold throughout the record. Where Songs for Young Lovers! emphasized the romantic aspects of the songs, Sinatra sounds like a lonely, broken man on In the Wee Small Hours. Beginning with the newly written title song, the singer goes through a series of standards that are lonely and desolate. In many ways, the album is a personal reflection of the heartbreak of his doomed love affair with actress Ava Gardner, and the standards that he sings form their own story when collected together. Sinatra's voice had deepened and worn to the point where his delivery seems ravished and heartfelt, as if he were living the songs.

When I Look In Your EyesYears after the '90s, the decade will be remembered for the rise of pianist-vocalist Diana Krall. The Very Special World of Lee HazlewoodLee Hazlewood was a late bloomer. Following a meandering career as a disc jockey, producer, songwriter, label executive and solo artist, Hazlewood hit the jackpot at the ripe age of 37 with "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'," the song Nancy Sinatra took to the top of the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. Its success convinced MGM Records that Hazlewood was a bankable star, and they signed him as an artist in his own right the same year. But as a self-described "non-singer" whose cult 1963 debut, Trouble Is A Lonesome Town, was little more than a happy accident, they'd perhaps gotten the wrong end of the stick where Lee was concerned.
In three years on the label, Hazlewood delivered three albums and sundry odds and ends, beginning with 1966 album The Very Special World Of Lee Hazlewood. The LP found Hazlewood gunning-in as much as he ever did-for commercial success, blending country, pop, novelty, mariachi, and lounge music into something unusually of-the-moment.
Lushly orchestrated and-like the album that preceded it-half-sung, half-spoken in a way that Hazlewood made all his own, the album collected solo versions of songs made famous by Sinatra and others ("Sand," "Boots," "So Long Babe," "Summer Wine"-included as a bonus duet with Suzi Jane Hokom) alongside some of his career-best solo compositions, among them the Morricone-like opener, "For One Moment." It's a record of extremes: "When A Fool Loves A Fool" is as light and throwaway as anything he ever laid down, while the wistful "My Autumn's Done Come" (sample lyric: "Let those I-don't-care days come in, I'm tired of holding my stomach in") is as raw and honest.1. Live At The Sands (Awaiting Repress)Between 1960 and 1965 (and briefly in 1988), the three singers performed together off and on, and their stage act has been captured in various media. There is film of their performances in 1960 in Las Vegas during the making of Ocean's Eleven, a recording of their show at a nightclub near Chicago in the fall of 1962 legitimately released in 1999 as The Summit: In Concert, and a videotape of a closed-circuit benefit performance from 1965. In September 1963, preparing for another group film, Robin and the Seven Hoods, the three got together during a Martin engagement at the Sands in Las Vegas, and Sinatra had his record label, Reprise, record the proceedings, but ultimately decided against releasing an album at the time. This is that recording, and much of it will sound familiar to anyone who has encountered other Rat Pack shows. In his liner notes, Bill Zehme quotes Bill Miller, Sinatra's accompanist, as saying that maybe 30 percent of the act was ad libbed. Miller added, Usually by Dean, and that sounds right. As usual, Martin begins with comic rewrites of standards, in particular a version of Cole Porter's I Love Paris rendered as I Love Vegas. Sinatra follows with a straight six-song set, and then he and Martin joke it up for a while before giving way to a brief set by Davis. Many of the jokes are repeated from previous performances, but some are new. The key, of course, is the trio's camaraderie, which remains a delight.

The Complete LHI RecordingsLee Hazlewood's LHI label only put out interesting albums. Yet despite the psychedelic cowboy's success with Nancy Sinatra and more, being on Lee Hazlewood Industries was no fast-track to success. Gorgeous and talented Detroit, Michigan girl group Honey Ltd had all the makings of a hit band, yet they disappeared after releasing just one album in 1968, a vinyl rarity that now regularly fetches upwards of $2,000.
Light In The Attic Records is now looking to set the record straight. Having previously explored both the back catalog of Lee Hazlewood and his LHI label via the You Turned My Head Around 45s Box Set, Honey Ltd's The Complete LHI Recordings presents everything the group ever recorded. Fans of The Ronettes, The Shangri-Las and Pentangle are in for a treat - Honey Ltd's music blended social commentary with harmony-drenched, psych-soul pop. Even opening track, 'Warrior', describes the mood of the times, as America sunk into the Vietnam war: "We must kill more people; strong men are what we need!
Laura Polkinghome, Marsha Jo Temmer and sisters Joan and Alexandra Sliwin are the girls with the angelic voices. Hailing from Detroit, the four members of Honey Ltd grew up in a culture of soul music and dance shows, yet forming a band was never part of the plan. It simply happened after they sung together in a Wayne State University cafeteria and found they'd silenced the room. By 1967 they had formed a group known as the Mama Cats and were playing shows with local singer Bob Seger. By 1968, against a backdrop of rioting in Detroit, they'd hauled over to Los Angeles to give music a go, and it's there that they hitch-hiked to an audition with Lee Hazlewood on Sunset Boulevard. At the time, Lee Hazlewood Industries was in its prime: the money flowed and the roster swelled. "I think Lee just sat there for a while and listened, looking at us," Temmer recalls. "He said, 'Yeah, I think we can do something.' You know - immediately!" Before long, LHI had the band in the studio with crack session music unit The Wrecking Crew.
These were not enlightened times for girl groups. The group were re-named Honey Ltd by Hazlewood, and were put to work on an album without even realizing it. The band were under the impression they were simply recording singles. As a result, the band were unphased by Honey Ltd's commercial failure.
The parent label, however, did notice the album's failure but the girls continued on. By the end of 1968, the band joined Bob Hope on the USO tour and headed to Thailand to perform for soldiers. In 1969, Alex married and quit the band, their tenure on LHI was effectively terminated and the remaining members regrouped as country-rock group Eve. But like their music, the girls' outlook remained resolutely sunny.

The unmistakable richness of Standards is largely down to Seal's choice to collaborate with the very same, legendary musicians who have performed with Frank Sinatra - Randy Waldman (pianist who toured with Sinatra and Paul Anka), Chuck Berghofer (bass player, who had performed with Ella Fitzgerald and Ray Charles) and Greg Fields (drummer who also performed with Quincy Jones and Stevie Wonder).

Count Basie and Frank Sinatra had the perfect arrangement at the Sands. Before the Chairman hit the stage in Vegas, Count Basie and his big band warmed up the already enthusiastic crowd with a brief set of their own. A dynamite entertainer, the legendary leader causes hearts to race, hips to shake, and fingers to snap with high-energy readings of his trademark swing music, taken to feverish heights by both his first-rate orchestra and the incredibly swank setting. Fortunately, the finest of Basie and Co.'s introductory performances from the historic 1966 dates have been preserved here and serve as a seminal complement to Sinatra's iconic Live at the Sands.

Captured in late January and early February 1966, Live at the Sands (Before Frank) contains most of Basie's signature pieces delivered with an enthusiasm, style, and brassiness that exceed that gracing nearly any of the Count's studio efforts. His band is stacked to the nines, with tenor saxophonist Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, saxophonist/flautist Eric Dixon, and drummer "Sonny" Payne among the prized cast. The Sands dates marked the first time in years that these players, as well as trombonist Al Grey, gathered onstage together.
Encouraged by Basie, the instrumentalists engage in a series of call-and-response passages and standout solos, not the least of which is Davis' turn on a white-hot "Jumpin' at the Woodside" and he and Dixon's exchanges on "This Could Be the Start of Something Big." No slouch, Basie approaches "Makin' Whoopee" with graceful playfulness, and oversees the assortment of uptempo swing numbers and mellow ballads with astute melodicism. A sublime version of the Don Gibson country standard "I Can't Stop Loving You," arranged by Quincy Jones, can almost be considered a bonus.
No, it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing. And Basie and his mates have plenty of it on this superb outing. Big-band jazz seldom enjoyed such levels of rhythmic precision, expert charts, or unfettered joy. Unbelievably, this gem has been out of print for years, with original copies both on vinyl and CD commanding steep prices. Mobile Fidelity's reissue restores not only the sonics but the record's place in jazz history.

Securing his first proper record deal with David Geffen's Asylum label in 1972, Tom Waits would go on to release seven records with the label in as many years. The first of these, Closing Time, was released in March 73 and comprised the most unique collection of original compositions that American critics and consumers had witnessed since the 1960s heyday of Beatles, Beach Boys and Bob Dylan. Informed by the wordsmiths of the beat generation, the blues howlers of a former age, the smooth jazz vocals of Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, and the country flavoured ballads that Ray Charles had turned to in the early 1960s, Waits developed a cult following with his portrayals of modern American domesticity and love sought and lost. On the 12th August 1973 Waits was to be found performing an in-house set for the renowned L.A. radio series Folk Scene, broadcast weekly by KPFK FM, Tom's performances were augmented with interviews that provide a fascinating insight into his career at this time. Included too on this LP are five additional tracks from a performance Tom made in Santa Monica a few months later on 10th November 1973. Also the subject of an FM broadcast, two further cuts from The Heart of Saturday Night are complimented by a triumvirate of Waits rarities that have seldom been heard before or since.LP1

Dean Martin was always at his best when he sounded effortless, when the singing required no exertion-just the same amount of investment required to order a martini. Confident, refined, breezy, and easygoing, this 1960 Capitol album epitomizes the crooner's charm. In pairing with arranger and Frank Sinatra right-hand-man Nelson Riddle, Martin strikes all the right notes on this collection of then-recent and retro standards.
Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's 180g LP gets inside the core being of Martin's impeccably smooth, relaxed singing by presenting every phrase, dip, and inflection with lifelike realism. The LP does similar wonders for Riddle's backing orchestra. Horns teem with punch and midrange; rhythms possess incredible pacing; strings saunter and float. No Martin album has ever sounded like this. Mobile Fidelity also secured the rights to a bonus track, Ain't That a Kick in the Head, left off the album and released as a single in order to promote the movie Ocean's Eleven.
While Martin enjoyed his biggest commercial success at Reprise, the aptly titled This Time I'm Swingin' is considered by many critics and vocal-pop fans to be his finest studio hour. He approaches each song with supreme confidence and debonair control, never overreaching his limits or breaking a sweat. Here, he more than lives up to his nickname: The King of Cool. Charismatic, assured, and note-perfect, the album belongs alongside any of the period sets cut by his pal and once-and-future labelmate Sinatra. No wonder that his most recognized hit, the aforementioned and included "Ain't That a Kick in the Head," was actually cut at these sessions.
Riddle's expert ordering of the charts and direction of horns, strings, and piano equates to jazz and swing genius. Brass blows hard and strong during breaks, calm down for verses during which slinky 88s and swaying strings join the dance, and then rise up, the mix elegantly performed and irresistibly catchy. If you're not snapping your fingers and instantly transported to a swank nightclub within the first few passages of the opening "I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me," check your system's setup.
Yet Martin is the real star. Hearing him handle such classics as the devotional "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face," upbeat "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You," hopeful "Someday (You'll Want Me to Want You)," bluesy "You're Mean to Me," and clever "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone" with such aplomb-and now, in such ravishing detail-will remind you why you love music, and why nothing of this ilk will likely ever be made again.
Martin convincingly conveys the mood each song demands, but a sense of optimism, playfulness, and feel-good romance pervade this stylish effort. If you are a fan of real singing and emotional crooning, you cannot live without this analog edition. A veritable gem.

Is That All There Is?Peggy Lee was 49 years old when Capitol Records released Is That All There Is? in 1969. It was her 42nd album, and it had been over 10 years since the singer born Norma Deloris Egstrom, in 1920, had last graced the US Top 40 with her presence; her sultry take on Little Willie John's 'Fever' scaled the upper echelons of the American hit parade in 1958.
But Lee, a country girl with Scandinavian ancestry who hailed from the plains of North Dakota, had more in the tank. The haunting and idiosyncratic 'Is That All There Is?' (inspired by a short story called Disillusionment from German writer Thomas Mann) captured the public imagination when it was released as a single in the States and started climbing the pop charts, where it peaked at No.11. Such was the song's impact that it won Lee a Grammy Award in the category of Best Contemporary Female Vocal Performance in 1970. Its success was a surprise to Capitol, who thought the song was too odd and esoteric to be a hit.
The song opens Lee's album of the same name and, even today, remains a profoundly potent piece of music. It has the ability to simultaneously provoke conflicting emotions, eliciting both laughter and pathos. Combining a spoken narrative with a plaintive refrain sung over a jaunty rhythm, it evokes the Berlin cabaret scene of the 1920s and the spirit of German composer Kurt Weill. The song was penned and produced by noted hitmakers Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, and it's unlike anything else they wrote: a philosophical rumination that questions the meaning of things.
Arranged and conducted by a young Randy Newman, 'Is That All There Is?' is beautifully delivered by Lee in plangent tones, mixing a droll, ironic humour with a poignant reflection on the absurdity and, indeed, disappointments of life. Despite the song's somber mood and theme of disillusionment, the chorus is gloriously carefree: "Let's keep dancing/Let's break out the booze and have a ball," Lee sings, and she sounds like she means it. (Understandably, the song - which was originally written for, and turned down by, Marlene Dietrich - has inspired many covers over the years, including notable versions by Tony Bennett and PJ Harvey with John Parish.)
Though it was the undoubted cornerstone of Lee's 1969 album, there was much more to enjoy besides the title song. Another Leiber and Stoller composition, 'Whistle For Happiness', is stylistically similar to 'Is That All There Is?' while their 'I'm A Woman' is a swaggering, sassy blues that was first cut by Lee on her 1963 album of the same name and was a minor US chart hit at the time.
Peggy Lee Is Love Story Single Label - 300Elsewhere, Lee deconstructs the Al Jolson-associated 'Me And My Shadow' and imbues it with a languorous sensuality, while the Nancy and Frank Sinatra duet 'Something Stupid' is reconfigured into a breezy bossa nova. Another highlight is her take on Randy Newman's 'Love Story (You And Me)', the opening cut on the singer-songwriter's 1968 debut album for Reprise, which is arranged and conducted by the composer himself. Newman's 'Johnny (Linda)' is also included and has an arrangement that recalls the vaudevillian quirkiness of the album's title track.
Lee also embraced the rock music zeitgeist by tackling The Beatles' George Harrison-penned 'Something' and Neil Diamond's gospel-flavoured 'Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show', though she does them in her own inimitable way.
Is That All There Is? dared to be different and showed that, though Peggy Lee was often typecast as a stereotypical jazz chanteuse, she was a much more versatile performer than had hitherto been revealed. Though its title song is an ode to coping with disappointment, that particular emotion is the last thing that you feel when listening to this classic album, which is a life-affirming delight from beginning to end.1. Pure Comedy, Father John Misty's third album, is a complex, often-sardonic, and, equally often, touching meditation on the confounding folly of modern humanity. Father John Misty is the brainchild of singer-songwriter Josh Tillman. Tillman has released two widely acclaimed albums - Fear Fun (2012) and I Love You, Honeybear (2015) - and the recent "Real Love Baby" single as Father John Misty, and recently contributed to songs by BeyoncÉ, Lady Gaga, and Kid Cudi.
While we could say a lot about Pure Comedy - including that it is a bold, important album in the tradition of American songwriting greats like Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman, and Leonard Cohen - we think it's best to let its creator describe it himself. Take it away, Mr. Tillman: Pure Comedy is the story of a species born with a half-formed brain. The species' only hope for survival, nding itself on a cruel, unpredictable rock surrounded by other species who seem far more adept at this whole thing (and to whom they are delicious), is the reliance on other, slightly older, half-formed brains. This reliance takes on a few different names as their story unfolds, like "love," "culture," "family," etc. Over time, and as their brains prove to be remarkably good at inventing meaning where there is none, the species becomes the purveyor of increasingly bizarre and sophisticated ironies. These ironies are designed to help cope with the species' loathsome vulnerability and to try and reconcile how disproportionate their imagination is to the monotony of their existence. Something like that.
Pure Comedy was recorded in 2016 at the legendary United Studios (Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Beck) in Hollywood, CA. It was produced by Father John Misty and Jonathan Wilson, with engineering by Misty's longtime sound-person Trevor Spencer and orchestral arrangements by renowned composer/double-bassist Gavin Bryars (known for extensive solo work, and work with Brian Eno, Tom Waits, Derek Bailey).LP 1
