Davis Third and Final Pairing With Arranger Gil Evans Yields Watershed Innovations
Sublime Sound: Mobile Fidelity Reissue Corrects the Dry Sound That Plagues Previous Editions
Flamenco-Themed 1960 Set Develops Synergy Between Orchestrations and Melancholic Jazz Phrasings
Urge by Davis to Develop Techniques Possessed by Forbearers Finds Him Expanding Palette, Spinning Webs of Lyrical Sound and Emotion
Kind of Blue, Milestones, Round About Midnight, Four & More, and In a Silent Way Also Available from Mobile Fidelity
Miles Davis and Gil Evans bridged styles and collaborated on high-concept projects a total of three times during their celebrated career. For their final act, they created Sketches of Spain, a peak moment in each luminarys career and a transformative album that weds Spanish themes, lush orchestrations, romantic timbres, and Davis increasingly lyrical methods in a tender ceremony that continues to resonate more than five decades after its original release.
Part of Mobile Fidelitys Miles Davis catalog restoration series, the genre-defying 1960 classic has been given the ultimate white-gloves treatment. Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, this exquisite 180g LP significantly expands the soundstage that frames the orchestra and digs deep to eradicate a dryness that many critics have found as an anathema to its overall enjoyment. Here, at last, is the full-figured perspective long deserved by the woodwinds, strings, and percussion, all of which come alive with previously unheard definition and detail.
Indeed, in its three-decade-plus history, Mobile Fidelity has never been prouder to have the honor of handling efforts as important as Davis key recordings. Its why the labels engineers have taken every available measure to insert listeners into the space occupied by Davis, bassist Paul Chambers, drummer Jimmy Cobb, percussionist Elvin Jones, and the 18-piece orchestra. With both Evans and Davis attracted to the blues undercurrents permanently entrenched in the Spanish flamenco strains, listeners can finally wholly detect the myriad microdynamic tonalities, brooding ostinato devices, and minor pedal points that stamp the compositions with divine sensibility and goffered effect.
Multi-note motifs, brief improvisational solos, fanfare sweeps, and contrapuntal exchanges inform the flamenco-spiced pieces, but so do unconventionally voiced instruments that come into full relief on this reissue. Davis Harmon-muted trumpet is abetted by an assortment of bassoons and French horns that create pleasing contrasts and sounds (pp, mf, ppp) that get to the heart of Sketches of Spain: splashes of color. Seldom, if ever, did Davis ever so expressively and liberally paint with color. And in Evans, he has a likewise-minded partner to help draw out variegated shades, adamantine layers, and striated distinctions.
Whether its the somber mood piece of the standout Concierto de Aranjuez (Adagio), renowned forDavis flugelhorn performance, or the folktale-based Solea, Mobile Fidelitys enhanced Sketches of Spain transfixes with playing, ideas, and innovations that remain exclusive to this incomparable record.

SketchesClassically trained pianist, violinist, producer, and composer, Poppy Ackroyd turned heads in the neo-classical world with her previous works Escapement and Feathers, as well as her involvement in Hidden Orchestra (Tru Thoughts). Advocated by giants of the genre, Hauschka and Nils Frahm, the unique musician has returned with a mini-album to be released on Bjork's label One Little Indian Records.
The songs serve to reintroduce listeners to Ackroyd's most stunning pieces from her previous albums, all of which have been reworked into 'acoustic' solo piano arrangements alongside four brand new unheard pieces, which offer a taste of a new forthcoming record.
The record, aptly named Sketches, due to its stripped down nature, is bejeweled by thematic undercurrents - birds are the inspiration for three of the tracks, which are to be released together as the lead singles from the album.
'Birdwoman' and 'Glass Sea' feature field recordings of birds and the ocean, recorded on Brighton Beach and North Rona respectively. 'Feathers' is the title track of my second album Feathers says Ackroyd, discussing the theme of birds.
'Feathers' is a piece about hope - 'Hope is the thing with Feathers' (Emily Dickinson), 'Birdwoman' is a reworking of a piece I originally wrote as a soundtrack to a silent film based on a Siberian folk tale, and 'Glass Sea' attempts to capture the feel of a boat trip I took to the remote islands of North Rona and Sula Sgeir, North of the Outer Hebrides. The ocean was unusually still, reflecting the sky like a sheet of glass, but the sky became busy with birds as we approached the islands.
Ackroyd is a keen collaborator, having created soundtracks for film, dance, physical theater and radio. The artist won a BAFTA for an animation soundtrack that she wrote and performed in 2015. Through studying contemporary classical piano works and listening to electronic music, Ackroyd developed a unique compositional style, using contemporary pianistic ideas whilst also inhabiting the world of sound beyond the keyboard, using unconventional techniques to 'play' other parts of the instruments as well.
Talking about the recording of Sketches, Ackroyd said: The songs were recorded just outside of Brighton at Retreat Studios, close to the sea on the edge of the village, surrounded by hills, fields, and wildlife. As if by magic, it began to rain just before I began to record the track 'Rain', and ended shortly after I finished. You can hear the rain build and then die away with the music on the finished piece.
I have loved creating this solo piano album. There are normally all these layers that I use to create a world of sound, that I love to build and sculpt, but there is something really special about communicating simply through the instrument alone. With other layers there is always something to hide behind, with only the piano you can just focus on your technique and expression, everything feels very audible and exposed and that is very exciting, especially in a live context.1. Limited individually Numbered Edition!
The conception of ''Sketches of Spain'' in 1960, can be placed in the ''most melodic era'' of Miles Davis. It is one of his most accessible and less improvisational albums, some even outclassed it from the reigns of Jazz.
This is one of the four albums where Miles and Gil Evans (arranger & conductor) were together with a small orchestra of horns and percussion, and it was fueled by Spanish melodies that fascinated Davis to the point he needed to get into them and go beyond: El Concierto de Arajuez by Joaquín Rodrigo and El Amor Brujo by Manuel de Falla.1. Sketches For My Sweetheart The Drunk (Pre-Order)Perhaps the most talented son act in pop music, Jeff Buckley combined the often harrowing eclecticism of estranged papa Tim Buckley with the rock acrobatics of Robert Plant. This posthumously released collection of four-track demos and sessions helmed by Tom Verlaine indicates that Buckley's astonishing full-length debut, Grace, was no fluke. The young singer-songwriter puts his falsetto to good use on an extraordinary collection of original material, from the soulful Everybody Here Wants You to the psychedelic Murder Suicide Meteor Slave. And while his bluesy take on Porter Wagoner's Satisfied Mind may not be as revelatory as his earlier version of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, this album offers ample proof that Buckley was among his generation's most gifted voices. --Bill FormanLP 1

Queen Of The Minor Key (Awaiting Repress)On new album Queen of the Minor Key, Eilen Jewell and her ace band conjure up songs depicting broken bottles as protection, bad voodoo and Cupid using a sawed-off shotgun instead of a bow and arrow. The dark, often times haunted tales on the album are fleshed out at points by surf guitar, pedal steel and upright bass, but always hold Jewells smoldering voice and unforgettable lyrics center stage.
The lines did not come easily at first, as Jewell was struck with a severe case of writers block when she began the follow-up to the critically acclaimed Sea of Tears. To help she retreated to a cabin in the mountains of Idaho, where the Boston based artist is originally from. With no electricity and no running water, she was able to focus on crafting sketches of songs, breaking her block and building the framework of Queen of the Minor Key.
Jewell and her longtime band of Jason Beek (drums, harmony vocals), Jerry Miller (electric, acoustic and steel guitars), and Johnny Sciascia (upright bass) turned the sketches into songs. A crack unit with an innate musical connection developed after playing 150 plus shows a year for the last five years, the band has an impressive array of styles and sounds displayed fully on the album. Return To The MoonEL VY (pronounced like a plural of Elvis; rhymes with 'hell pie') is the musical collaboration between Matt Berninger, vocalist and lyricist of The National, and Brent Knopf, the Portland musician and producer best known for his work in Menomena and his more recent band, Ramona Falls.
The album is a project Berninger and Knopf have been thinking about for years. Their friendship spans nearly a decade, starting back when the National and Menomena played small half-empty clubs along America's west coast. Feeling an immediate musical kinship, the pair kept in touch, Brent sending Matt occasional rough sketches of music and Matt responding with melodies and lyrics. Finally, in the winter and spring of 2014-15, they actually got together to make an album.1. Return To The Moon (Political Song for Didi Bloome to Sing, with Crescendo)

Lacquers Plated By Gary Salstrom And Pressed On 200-Gram Vinyl At Quality Record Pressings!
Another sonic and musical blockbuster from the unbeatable combo of Reiner and RCA (and Mohr & Layton). Recorded in 1957 at Chicago's Orchestra Hall; the original analog session tapes were used in mastering for LPs and SACDS. Mussorgsky's inspiration for Pictures was the death of his dear friend, the architect and visual artist Victor Hartman. Having died at age 39, Hartman had not yet had the opportunity to realize any of his architectural visions, and Mussorgsky was angered that his friend would have no legacy. The Architects' Society arranged an exhibition of some of Hartman's sketches - some of architecture, others of characters or scenes from everyday life. The tribute was enough to give Mussorgsky ideas for his composition, but not enough to give Hartman any lasting place in history. Today, of all of the sketches that were captured in music, only six can be positively identified.
The piece is known today primarily through the orchestral version created by Maurice Ravel in 1922. In fact, the work had already been orchestrated multiple times, by a variety of lesser names. Some conductors today find that Ravel's version, in spite of its color, sacrifices some of the coarse nature inherent in Mussorgsky's piano original. Furthermore, Ravel worked from Rimsky-Korsakov's edited version of the piano part - the only one available at the time - which changed some notes and rhythms.
None of the orchestrations, however, change the fundamental spirit of the piece. Mussorgsky imagines himself making his way down the hallway that showcased his late friend's work, with his stately procession represented by the Promenade that opens the piece and returns several times. Upon stopping at each image, he reflects on what he sees. Between the early movements, the promenade returns regularly, as Mussorgsky is conscious of moving from one scene to the next. As the work progresses, however, he becomes less aware of the interval between pictures, and more immersed in the continuous psychological experience of moving from one state of mind to the next. By the end, the composer sees himself transformed by the connection with Hartman through his visual expressions of Russian pride and humanity.

Pagan DayOfficial Reissue Of The 1984 Classic
Legendary Conceptual Audiovisual Group Formed By Throbbing Gristle Co-Founder Genesis P-Orridge & Alternative TV's Alex Fergusson
Collection Of Early Demos And Sketches By P-Orridge & Fergusson
Vinyl Has Been Out Of Print Since 1986
Includes The Bonus Track "Farewell"
Shortly before Christmas 1984, the core songwriters, Genesis P-Orridge and Alex Fergusson, of underground arts collective Psychic TV, quietly released a limited edition record containing sketches and ideas for songs. Some songs would become later fully-realized arrangements, some abandoned and others were justcovered in praise of their creator. The record, in recognition of its seasonal release, was simply titled A Pagan Day and would capture the intimate songwriting sessions that were prevalent during a crucial time in the band's career.
In classic Psychic TV fashion, rumors and myths surround the album's creation. Most have suggested that it was recorded in a single session over a cup of coffee on a lone 4-track cassette recorder above an old YMCA building in London, though later revealed that the recordings were from various sessions over the course of a couple years prior to the record's release. After quickly pressing the songs to vinyl, the record was originally only available through Rough Trade fora few hours on December 23, 1984, and pressed on picture discs, which adorned a photo of P-Orridge's first born, Caresse, in exactly 999 copies. The pressing sold out immediately that day which caused Temple Records, their "in-house label", to later release a standard reissue version in 1986.
What makes the songs, or rather versions of songs, so unique is the primitive and fragile nature of the arrangements while the flimsy, immediate vocal delivery makes the album sit unknowingly between demo and fully realized album."Baby's Gone Away" and "New Sexuality" are just a couple examples of songs tha tfans of Psychic TV became intimately familiar with from live experiences, buton A Pagan Day, they are released in their infantile stages with no full band, just Alex & Genesis finding their way through the songs with an acoustic guitar, drum machine and organ. "Cold Steel" shows a true peek behind the curtain, sung effortlessly by Fergusson and would then later become the classic standard "The Orchids." Most notable is the band's cover of Pearls Before Swine's "Translucent Carriages" of which P-Orridge accords special praise to Tom Rapp, the song's original author and icon to both P-Orridge and Fergusson.1. Kind Of Blue + 2 Bonus TracksRanked 12/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
So much has been said and written about Miles Davis Kind Of Blue, its virtually impossible to summarize all the necessary info to the length of this note. We could simply list some facts (best sold Jazz album ever worldwide). We could try to explain why its the best jazz album ever made, but the music itself will do that to you. As Bill Evans said in the original liner notes for the record, the band did not play through any of these pieces prior to recording. Miles Davis laid out the themes before the tape rolled and the band improvised.
The end results were fragile and wondrous. Recorded during 2 sessions in 1959, Kind of Blue worked on many different levels and will do so for many years to come. We´re proud to announce a very special version of the most influential (jazz)album ever. We present the orginal album in remastered form plus an extra LP containing 2 tracks that werent available on vinyl before (an alternate take of Flamenco Sketches and a version of On Green Dolphin Street recorded prior to the Kind of Blue sessions, with the legendary line-up of Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb).

Let Me Come Home (Discontinued)Broken Records' second album Let Me Come Home started out as a series of sketches and song fragments in frontman Jamie Sutherlands kitchen, later taking form in demo sessions at an old distillery grain store in the Scottish Highlands. The follow-up to 2009's Until The Earth Begins To Part, the album was recorded and produced by Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Delgados, Belle & Sebastian) at his Studio in Glasgow.
An idea started to form about the direction of the new record based on several films and albums that I became gradually obsessed with at that time. Watching the widescreen emptiness of films Badlands, Rumble Fish and East Of Eden, as well as records such as Bruce Springsteens Nebraska, Nick Caves Murder Ballads, Calexicos Feast Of Wire, and REMs early back catalogue all became a strong influence on the direction of the new songs. It was also during this time that the lyrical theme of the record started to take shape, thinking about what was going on around me in the form of fears and concerns over making relationships work, and a need for security. - Jamie Sutherland1. Library Catalog Music Series: Music For Troubled MachineryWhat started out as a total bummer--musical sketches and ideas hindered by
a conked out machine--actually turned into an album. What you are hearing
on Music for Troubled Machinery is the slow and unruly death of Leb Laze's
core production tool..the MPC 2000 (R.I.P). When this device begins to die
it randomly freezes at any given moment, often times wiping out anything
that has been created within its path. What is interesting though is when
an MPC freezes it begins to uncontrollably spit out all of the sounds that
are loaded within it in their raw and unedited form..over and over and
over. This occurrence is like nothing I have ever heard. The machine
begins to have a mind of its own.
Leb Laze began to record and embrace these freakouts, using them as a
basis for the majority of the songs on this album..adding to them,
enhancing them and/or sculpting around them. Two shorter pieces,
Revelations and Dial In/Dial Out were actually created entirely from these
freakouts. Think of this record and, most importantly, these two tracks,
as my MPC's last words--a testament to the idea that the nonliving world

Love And DevotionHeterotic is husband-and-wife production team Lara Rix-Martin and Mike Paradinas, the latter the boss and founder of Planet Mu, and a celebrated producer in his own right as µ-Ziq. Their debut release is a composite of four striking instrumental tracks and four unique collaborations with Gravenhurst, the musical pen-name of Nick Talbot who is known for his dark, folk-tinged material for Warp Records. They were brought together by a mutual friend who sensed potential in the pairing.
For both Talbot and Paradinas, the project is something of a departure. Love & Devotion displays an affinity for hazy, dreamy, '80s-influenced electronic pop shot through with the dynamics and space of modern electronic dance music. The lyrics describe a world profoundly haunted by its past; while allusions to a key event are cloaked in ambiguity, their echoes in the present are described in visceral and magical detail. Love & Devotion's tightly coiled melodies cloaked in an insomniac haze, subtle harmonic shifts and strong vocal counter-melodies conveying sweeping sketches of a troubled, neon world.1 Bliss

Four (Acts Of Love)Mick Harvey is pleased to announced details for his latest solo album, FOUR (Acts of Love), a follow up to 2011's Sketches from the Book of the Dead, due out via Mute on June 11th, 2013.
This is the sixth studio album from this prolific musician, a man renowned for his career with The Birthday Party and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds as well as for his work with soundtracks (Chopper, To Have And To Hold, Australian Rules). FOUR (Acts of Love) was recorded on two continents at Grace Lane in North Melbourne and Atlantis Sound in Melbourne and features original compositions from Harvey in addition to exciting re-interpreatations of classic hits. Regular
collaborators Rosie Westbrook on double bass and JP Shilo on guitar and violin lent their talent, alongside new collaborators such as PJ Harvey "Glorious."
Harvey takes a turn at revisiting classics such as The Saints 'The Story of Love', Van Morrison's 'The Way Young Lovers Do', Exuma's 'Summertime in New York' and Roy Orbison's 'Wild Hearts (Run Out of Time)'.

Cut Yourself FreeOn the heels of last years critically acclaimed debut LP, Under the Pale Moon, and Earth Has Doors EP comes the sophomore full length from Wymond Miles, guitarist of San Francisco garage-pop titans The Fresh & Onlys.
Cut Yourself Free assembles another convergence of moon-lit romantic swagger and post-punk massacred
urgency. Again self recorded and produced to tape, Miles' song-craft has emerged more refined and poignant, benefitting from the avalanche of his frenzied live shows, but also adhering to a more minimalistic fashion with crooning mid-era Nick Cave or Bowie/Roxy Music strains of pop-modernism. But what stands at the forefront is Miles' command of his textural guitar and vintage-synth sprawl
that on his choosing can open dream-like vistas, or pierce with an engine's snarl.
Turning to the narrative, Miles weaves each song with its own vignette of story line, often with a vaguely obscured protagonist/antagonist dialog. Relationships in Miles' sketches are always tangled, if not licentious affairs, but are presented more
as lustrous gateways to mend and revitalize rather than squalor in.1. The Ascension

Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the release of his landmark concept album, Rick Wakeman presents the repackaged, re-recorded, extended Journey To The Centre Of The Earth.
Based on the novel by Jules Verne, which will also mark its 150th anniversary in 2014, the album is one of the rock era's landmark achievements - a record that sold 15 million copies and rewrote the rules.
This is the start of a new Journey, says Rick Wakeman, the original score for the album had been lost for so many years, making any new performances impossible, but after it turned up without warning, we managed to restore it and add previously missing music that was not included in the original performances. It has taken another half decade to develop it into this album and tour, but I can't wait to take Jules Verne's magnificent story on the road again.
The new, extended re-recorded of 'Journey To The Centre Of The Earth' comes beautifully packaged complete with new, original artwork from legendary artist Roger Dean.Journey to the Centre of the Earth

Right From Real
"Like a fever dream of Julia Holter
merging with Grimes, Ainsworth's future
visions weave neoclassical flourishes and
enchanted melody-mangles into cool 80's
sound-beds, and it sounds fantastic."
"These soundscapes can provide a myriad
of emotion, from reassurance to
discomfort, anxiety to enthusiasm. [...] it's
an unexpected achievement for such a
young artist and a testament to the power
of music as a purely visceral force."
Composer / producer / singer Lydia Ainsworth has been secretly writing
and recording songs over the past three years from bedrooms and
basements between Toronto and Brooklyn. What began as pass-time
sketches between composing music for film and multimedia projects has
over time revealed an enchanting collection of experimental pop songs
with a life of their own.
Blurring the boundaries between indie music, filmic orchestration, and
electronic music, Lydia's debut "Right From Real" thrives on haunting
melodies and draws inspiration from a wide range of musical sources -
Verdi's Requiem, Ace of Base, Bulgarian Choirs, Bernard Herrmann, Tones
on Tail, Art of Noise to name a few. This sense of unexpected marriages
of influence flows throughout much of Lydia's work which features use of
voice sampling and string arrangements woven into a unique minimalist
