URPD-SMA-065xThe Brought Low
Right On TimeThere's a narrative at work in The Brought Low's best songs, chronicling existence in the inner-cities outer boroughs and the pratfalls of hard work, hard liquor and hard time. The essence of these stories mirror the band's own: the past couple years has been a repetition of arrivals and departures: family dying and being born, band members entering in and then walking out. There was a local new wave revival whose aesthetic they couldn't have less to do with, a cycle of touring, working, and touring again, a decrepit practice space that's become a decrepit second home. On the other side of the tunnel they've come out stronger, more resolute in their conviction, and wired for maximum impact.
Singer/ guitarist/ songwriter Benjamin Howard Smith and drummer Nick Heller have been the nucleus of The Brought Low since the rolling thunder of their NYC debut in 1999. The band's universally-lauded self-titled debut album on Tee Pee Records earned them a loyal audience, and the howling overdrive of their impassioned live shows have become the stuff of city folklore. 2003 saw the addition of bassist Robert Russell as well as second guitarist Kevin Eleven, who left the band shortly after recording concluded, returning them to their original power trio format. Following the release of Right On Time, The Brought Low band has planned a series of guerrilla tours throughout the country that will carry them well into 2007.1. A Better Life

Small Talk is the seventh album by Sly and the Family Stone, released in 1974. This album was the final LP to feature the original Family Stone, which broke up in January 1975.
Singles include Time For Livin' (the band's final Top 40 hit) and Loose Booty, an up-tempo funk track which uses the names of Bible characters Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego as a chant, sampled by the Beastie Boys on their masterpiece Paul's Boutique in 1989. Beastie Boys also covered Time For Livin' which was released on the album Check Your Head in 1992 along with a live music video augmented with skateboarding footage.

Allen Stone (Awaiting Repress)From backwoods barbecues and community gatherings, Allen Stone emerges to share personal melodies, telling tales of life after just 24 years. Originally getting his start singing at his father's church in small-town America, Stone's intense passion for music was instantly ignited by the great soul music of Marvin Gaye and Aretha Franklin, and eventually by the confessional lyrical fashion of the '60s-'70s singer/songwriters.
Since releasing his self-titled album digitally in early 2012, Stone has sold more than 16,000 units at iTunes completely independent of a label. ATO Records is now presenting Allen Stone's eponymous album for the first time in physical form. Big Day In A Small TownFour-time GRAMMY nominee and critically acclaimed singer/songwriter Brandy Clark is following up her 2013 smash debut album 12 Stories with the release of Big Day in a Small Town, to be released on Warner Bros. Records. With "Girl Next Door serving as the first single, Big Day in a Small Town is Clark's first major-label album. Big Day was produced by Jay Joyce.
"When I made 12 Stories, I think my dreams were a lot more realistic, in that I didn't expect a lot to happen... then it did," Clark says. "This time, my dreams are very much what they were when I was going to Vince Gill and Patty Loveless concerts and decided I was going to move to Nashville. Right now, my dreams are as big as when I was naïve enough to really dream them."
Clark is featured in The Outlaws issue of Garden & Gun with Matt Hendrickson raving, Big Day in a Small Town has the same biting wit as her 2013 debut 12 Stories, but it's an even richer collection of songs, with a life-in-the-middle-of-nowhere thread running through the album.
Big Day in a Small Town tells the stories of the football star, the father, the homecoming queen, and the hairdresser because those are the stories and people that Clark grew up knowing. "All these songs, there's some little truth in them, somewhere, that resonates with me or that is about me," she confesses.
12 Stories was featured on Best of lists from New York Magazine, NPR, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, The New York Post and The Boston Globe in 2013. That same year, The Los Angeles Times called it "the country debut of the year.1. Soap Opera

I'm Just Like You: Sly's Stone Flower 1969-70Compilation And Notes By Alec Palao
An Exclusive New Interview With Sly Stone Himself
In-depth Liner Notes With First-hand Reminiscences Of The Stone Flower Era From Many Of The Participants
Features All Five Stone Flower Produced Singles Plus Ten Previously Unissued Cuts From The Label Archives
All Tracks Newly Remastered From The Original Tapes
In 1970, The Family Stone were at the peak of their popularity, but the maestro Sly Stone had already moved his head to a completely different space. The first evidence of Sly's musical about-turn was revealed by the small catalog of his new label, Stone Flower: a pioneering, peculiar, minimal electro-funk sound that unfolded over just four seven-inch singles. Stone Flower's releases were credited to their individual artists, but each had Sly's design and musicianship stamped into the grooves-and the words "Written by Sylvester Stewart/Produced and arranged by Sly Stone" on the sticker.
Set up by Stone's manager David Kapralik with distribution by Atlantic Records, Stone Flower was, predictably, a family affair: the first release was by Little Sister, fronted by Stone's little sister Vaetta Stewart. It was short lived too-the imprint folded in 1971-but its influence was longer lasting. The sound Stone formulated while working on Stone Flower's output would shape the next phase in his own career as a recording artist: it was here he began experimenting with the brand new Maestro Rhythm King drum machine. In conjunction with languid, effected organ and guitar sounds and a distinctly lo-fi soundscape, Sly's productions for Stone Flower would inform the basis of his masterwork There's A Riot Goin' On.
The first 45 came in February 1970: Little Sister's dancefloor-ready "You're The One" hit Number 22 in the charts-the label's highest showing. The follow-up, "Stanga, also by Little Sister, made the wah pedal the star. The third release came from 6IX, a six-piece multi-racial rock group whose sole release, a super-slow version of The Family Stone's "Dynamite, featured only the lead singer and harmonica player from the group. Joe Hicks was the final Stone Flower stablemate; his pulsing, electronic Life And Death In G&A" is one of the bleakest moments Sly Stone ever created on disc (Hicks' prior single for Scepter, "Home Sweet Home," the first released Stone Flower production, is also included).
This long overdue compilation of Sly's Stone Flower era gathers each side of the five 45s plus ten previously unissued cuts from the label archives, all newly remastered from the original tapes. In these grooves you'll find the missing link between the rocky, soulful Sly Stone of Stand! and the dark, drum machine-punctuated, overdubbed sound of There's A Riot Going On. Your World Of TomorrowA rallying cry against the post-modern dystopia in which we live, the nine-cut, 40-minute full-length is rife with crisp songwriting, clear presentation and an overall straightforward style that the four-piece is well suited to. As per the Small Stone norm, tracking and mixing was handled by Benny Grotto at Mad Oak Studios in Massachusetts, and as per his norm, theres no sacrifice of the bands formidable live energy in the name of getting a professional sound. Cosmic PriestessFor well over a decade now, Tia Carrera have been melting minds with their own twist on the '70s rock n' roll jam. Mostly improvised, each live show is more of an experience than a performance, transporting you from wherever you are to places you didn't even know existed.
Erik Conn, Jason Morales and now permanent member Jamey Simms have taken their music to a new level both live and in the studio. Simms and Morales switch instruments seamlessly, sometimes mid-jam while Conn whales on, taking the listener on a wild, mind altering ride.
Their new release Cosmic Priestess, Small Stone 2011, highlights these elements to near perfection, bringing to the music new depths and lengths. Whether you're strapped to a chassis of a Texas hot rod in Slave Cylinder, exploring the colorful world of a coral reef in Sand, Stone and Pearl or three quarters of the way through the near 33 minute Saturn Missile Battery, Tia Carrera's improvisational scores will not disappoint.1. Catchy hooks and sweet vocal harmonies backed by a wall of thick fuzzy guitars and hard hitting drums with an added sprinkling of analog synth sounds, combined they result in a truly unique sound. Stoner rock, psychedelia, space rock or maybe it's just best described as Mangoo.
Hailing from Turku, Finland, Mangoo have been busting out the fuzz since 2005 when they released their untitled debut EP. Countless beers, shows and drummers later in 2009 the first full-length, Neolithic (7:45 Records), was released. Since then the line-up has remained unchanged with Pickles playing guitar and singing, Mattarn with some more guitar, Igor bringing the bass, Teemu pounding away at the drums and Nicke playing keys and just generating weird noises... oh, and everybody singing along and having a good time.
2012 will see the release of the bands second album and Small Stone debut, entitled Neverland. Like the debut it was recorded and produced by the band itself and displays growth to a more dynamic and even more varied sound. Neverland delivers the heavy, the mellow, the jams and the hooks. If you believe Benny Grotto, who mixed the album, it's a really cool band from Finland [...] who sorta sound like a cross between QOTSA, Rush, Yes, and the Foo Fighters. It's like, weird, proggy stoner rock, but with keyboards and gigantic pop hooks.LP1

Paths To CharonFans of the current 1970's retro rock explosion can add another band to their list of pick-me-ups: Sweden's Skanska Mord are yet another Small Stone signee with a taste for the Nazareths and Atomic Roosters of old.
There is also something of the Seattle psychedelic scene in 'Paths To Charon'. Wah-wahing guitars (think Valis and Screaming Trees) open up the first track 'Dark Caves of Our Mind' on this sophomore record, while Jan Benggtson's bluesy howl owes a bit to the vocal work of Alice in Chains' Layne Staley and Soundgarden's Chris Cornell.
The band's lyrics range from the traditional doom'n'gloom of metal's pioneers, with tunes like the plodding 'A Black Day' making no bones about the terrible state of things, while 'Lords of Space and Time' and 'Alien Encounter' take the listener on excursions elsewhere. 'Laggasen' eases things back a bit for its intro, with some tootling keyboards parting briefly for some harder-edged guitar work.
Folks with Graveyard, Horisont and Kadavar on their playlist should check them out.

Let It RollTen years in the running, Austin Texas's own Dixie Witch has established themselves as one of the seminal Texas Power Trios. Led by the thunderous rhythm and vocal section of Trinidad Leal and Curt Christenson aka ''CC'', Dixie Witch has experienced both success and hardship on the road. The road can either break a band or make a band and in the case of Dixie Witch it has defined them and made them who they are today. Dixie Witch brings a solid foundation and a united front that only a decade of touring can create. In true, ''Family Style'', these band mates have formed a brotherhood that has given way to songwriting with nods from greats such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Mountain, Black Sabbath, and Waylon Jennings.
In the spring of 2009, Dixie Witch introduced new guitarist Joshua ''JT'' Todd Smith to the fold. This addition has brought a new energy to the band, creating a springboard into the next chapter of Dixie Witch history.
Representing their long affiliated record label, Small Stone Records, the boys pull the trigger on a Texas Motor Rock Rumble with their eagerly anticipated SXSW2011 showcase. After SXSW, the band travels to Europe for their second jaunt across the pond, which will include an appearance at the Roadburn Festival in Holland.
2011 brings new energy, new songs and new life for Dixie Witch. This Fall DW will record their long awaited 4th album at Mad Oak Studios in Allston, MA. With a powerful modern heavy rock sound, ten years of a brotherhood gives way to a new horizon. And the band plays on...

URPD-SMA-134xMother of God
Anthropos''Woke up at dawn and felt a presence, nature spirits, observing me. Looked out through the window. Black shape. I went to the nearby forest and the journey had begun.Without a direct way, I went through the woods and crossed mountains. Suddenly elated by light, I was under the raven's wings. Numb. Awakened by a thud and the silhouettes of the three. Embrace. The circle was complete.'' -- Mother of God
Born in 2008 and raised on rock in Morgårdshammar, Sweden, the four-piece Mother of God cast off a lot of the retro '70s mentality of their countrymen in favor of a more modern approach.Well, 20 years more modern, anyway. Mother of God no doubt have some appreciation for the finer things in '70s rock - there are beards to prove it - but musically they incorporate influences from grunge and the heavy grooves of the early '90s. Bands like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains mesh their downtrodden grunge melodies alongside classic inspiration drawn from Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin.
These might sound like familiar elements - at least the names ring out - but Mother of God bring their own emotional spin to their Small Stone debut, Anthropos, and never quite cooperate with what you think they'll do next. The band has released two prior EPs - 2011's Forging a New Path and their debut - and they recorded and mixed Anthropos in BorlÄnge with Erik Nerback, Chris Goosman mastered, and Sanna Albenius, Robin Gnista and Alexander von Wieding provided art and layout design.
In addition to festival appearances at Getaway Rock, Wacken Open Air in Germany and Peace & Love, Mother of God have shared the stage with YOB, Dozer, Graveyard, Imperial State Electric and more, and they'll look to continue their live domination in Scandinavia and beyond in support of Anthropos, shoving their eclectic sound and undeniable hooks right in the faces of everyone who thinks they know what heavy rock should sound like.1. 2 3 0

HydraDuring many months of 2011 and 2012 Deville have been stuck in the studio most of the time except for some European festivals and random shows. After two full length albums and a couple of hundred shows all around Europe the new record is a product of that. Trying to take this experience of what the band does best and what works live this new record is wider than previous releases... This brand new recording will see the light of day in 2013 via the band's new home here at Small Stone.
In 2009, after more than 100 gigs all over Europe since the debut album release it was time for the album ''Hail the Black Sky''. Recorded during the early months in 2009 in Malmoe, Sweden by Markus Nilsson and produced by Deville. The band has taken a step to a more straight forward songwriting and this album has more of an album feeling than the last one recording the songs during the same period of time. It follows the pattern of significant Deville grooves and 70`s driven riffing of the darker school. Eleven tracks of rock in the veins of Black Sabbath. Kyuss and Soundgarden it takes you to the next level of 70's rock for the 21st century. This album proves the bands progress to their own sound in the genre of heavy rock and beyond and will definitely take the listeners for a ride.
The Swedish rock band Deville released their full length debut ''Come Heavy Sleep'' in December 2007 on Buzzville Records with great reviews. Two European tours took place in Jan/Feb and Nov/Dec 2008 that went through seven countries. Heaviness and grooves dominates ''Come Heavy Sleep'' that stretches from stoner rock to doom riffs. In 2005/2006 Deville released a record on Daredevil Records a split record (double feature CD/ LP). It was also released in Europe and in the US. The band have existed around six years and have done over 200 gigs and festivals in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Lithuania, Portugal, Spain and the U.K the past five years with bands like Sepultura, Fu Manchu, Mustasch(S) and Brant Bjork.1. Sasquanaut (Awaiting Repress)As I said a handful of reviews ago, it's always refreshing when I come across an album that doesn't reek of the usual influences. Enter Columbus, Ohio's Lo Pan, who eschews the Kyuss-Sabbath-Queens of the Stone Age trifecta for that of Boston's Only Living Witness.
Most of that stems from vocalist Jeff Martin, who's a dead ringer for OLW frontman Jonah Jenkins. But that's not to say that the rest of the band - Brian Fristoe, J. Bartz, and Skot Thompson - isn't that far removed from the Innocents and Prone Mortal Form hardcore-meets-rock riff slinging. There's definitely a correlation between Sasquanaut's ''Dragline'' and ''Kramer'' and OLW's ''Total Particle Reversal'' and ''December.''
Mind you, I'm not complaining. In the wild, woolly world of stoner rock, there are more than enough bands dishing out the prerequisite fat riffs and thick grooves. It's refreshing to hear a rock band that balances a harder edge with some classic, soaring vocals. You get that in spades with Sasquanaut, and if you're a fan of OLW - or Disengage, another like-minded band that burned bright and fast - you'll find Lo Pan to be exactly what you need.1. Side Alpha

Through The Dusty Paths Of Our LivesJust the name Paris evokes thoughts of romance. From tiny streetside cafes serving cafe au lait and fresh croissants to the breathtaking panoramic view as seen from atop the Eiffel Tower, the city simply oozes love. Thankfully the city of love also has a darker side. One just as dedicated to love, just love of a different kind. Love of all things heavy and all things rock. And that's the real Paris the one where Abrahma lives.
Formed in 2005 under the moniker Alcohsonic, this Parisian quartet epitimized the ideals of Rock and Roll. Blending the classic American 70's sound with blues, southern roots and just a hint of the modern Seb Bismuth, Nicolas Heller and the brothers Colin attempted to set Europe on fire. Their flame burned hot but far too bright and after five years, one LP and a scathing trail of live shows sharing the stage with the likes of Brant Bjork and Cactus, their course was run. But like a pheonix rising from it's own ashes Alcohsonic has been reborn as Abrahma.
''Through The Dusty Paths Of Our Lives'' is a self made monument to what might have been and an explosive first example what is yet to come. Five years on the road has hardened the sound and forged the new songs like iron in flame. Gone are any hints of 70's revivalism, buried beneath thick sludgy riffs and thundering basslines. Six hands play as one with the voice of an angry angel lighting the way. Featuring a guest appearance by Ed Mundell (Monster Magnet) and artwork designed by Alexander vonWieding ''Through The Dusty Paths Of Our Lives'' is a once in a lifetime debut. URPD-SMA-135xFive Horse Johnson
The Taking Of BlackheartReleased in January 2013, The Taking of Black Heart literally sees retro-rock survivors Five Horse Johnson galloping back into action -- or at least that's the rhythmic feel of the album's opening number, The Job, the image gracing its cover art, etc. Given all they've been through (none of it more traumatizing than frontman Eric Oblander suffering a stroke!), few would expect the group to come riding in to rescue classic rock from a fate worse than death (irrelevance), especially some six years removed from their last long-player's release. But as song after song rolls by, oftentimes driven by bluesier and rootsier songwriting ethics than 5HJ's ever displayed before, hope does spring eternal -- amen, bruvvers and sistahs, alright. Wailing harmonica and slippery slide guitars wrap themselves round and round laid-back groovers (Keep on Diggin', Smash & Grab, Die in the River) and foot-stomping bruisers alike (Black Heart Baby, Shoot My Way Out), thereby luring patrons left and right into 5HJ's juke joint -- and the first shot of canned heat is on them. Heck, and if any additional credibility were needed, get a load of Cheap Trick's Robin Zander taking over the mike stand for the album's funkiest, most euphoric moment in You're My Girl -- Otis Redding surely would approve. Perhaps more than any other track, the latter also highlights Five Horse Johnson's enduring faith and pure joy in playing rock & roll, regardless of how many paying customers show up on any given night. They're a band's band, at the end of the day: playing to play -- and The Taking of Black Heart is therefore a welcome return, bringing good news to the rock & roll faithful everywhere.

SeismicA good two decades after forming, Toronto ON's Sons of Otis have evolved but stayed true to their roots by keeping things simple, engaging and absolutely bone-crushing. Seismic is an album of solid, bombastic steamroller rock'n'roll - slow, but deadly to anything in its path. It's like Negative Reaction had a kid with Electric Wizard that was all heavy riffs and psychedelic psychosis, ready to rumble at the ring of the bell. Things even get Blue Cheer-y on the stomping, fuzz-laden rocker, "Never in My Life," and a bit of Led Zeppelin blues comes out in the closing "Cosmic Jam." Crack 'em open, light 'em up and brace yourself for the earthquake, because it's coming.

Moon QueenAsk anyone who lived through it and they'll tell you that the '70s will never be bettered for rock. Connecticut's Lord Fowl know this as well as anyone but rather than simply cruise by on retro clichÉs, they add touches of stoner, grunge and heavy psych to give their arena-worthy anthems a bit more kick. With a strong emphasis on soulful crooning, groove over heaviness and big choruses (and maybe a little cheese) they hit up stomping southern rock in the vein of Skynyrd (Quicksand), rip-roaring metal (Streets Of Evermore) and power-pop (The Queen Is Not Impressed) with flair, attitude and confidently understated guitarwork. The balance between poppier cuts and darker, more substantial numbers is a tricky one but the lunar luminaries pull it off comfortably. If you dig Mountain, Camaros and Pabst, these are your new brothers in arms.

Good Morning HarakiriSomething about Dwellers sounds oddly familiar, but it's hard to put your finger on it until the Salt Lake City group's debut, Good Morning Harakiri, really gets a head of steam going. Could it be the presence of previously known personages like former Iota vocalist/guitarist Joey Toscano, or Sub Rosa alums Dave Jones (bass) and Zach Hatsis (drums)? Nah, too obscure all around, so it's gotta be the neo-psych qualities of these songs, which at different times recall everyone from Dead Meadow, to Truly, to SST-era Soundgarden. You know what we're talking about: that period when post-punk lysergic vibes ran far deeper than the subliminal metal influences bubbling just beneath the surface, even on more insistent numbers like Black Bird and the intriguingly titled Ode to the Inversion Layer. Toscano's wah-wah-lovin' geetar also conjures up old-school Screaming Trees on the extended jam Vultures, where the long-term working relationship between his rhythm peers definitely comes in handy -- as it does on the slow-crawling, pent-up tension of closer Old Honey, featuring echoed vocals in the Sons of Otis wheelhouse. Another cut, the punchy Lightning Ritual, shows unusual restraint and succinctness, so at least we know Dwellers can accomplish such feats of self-editing, if they so wish. But something tells us to expect an even wackier acid trip next time around, if Good Morning Harakiri turns out to yield a sequel, in contrast with the finality of its title.

Family TreeFollowing their previous album 'Kentucky' which reached #5 in the UK Top 10 Album Chart in 2016, Kentucky's favorite arena rockers return with another relentless dose of hard riffing rock on their 6th studio album 'Family Tree', set for release on Mascot Records. 'Kentucky' reached their highest ever charting positions across Europe and Top 40 in the US, which cemented them even further in the hearts of music lovers across the globe. 'Family Tree' was again recorded and produced by the band themselves in Barrick Recording in Glasgow, Kentucky in the same way and same place as their eponymous debut album, which broke the band out of the small Southern town and onto the world stage. It's their blend of heart on sleeve lyrics, hard rocking riffs, Southern rock grooves and huge choruses that have seen them go from club shows to 12,000 capacity venues. 'Family Tree' also features Southern Rock icon Warren Haynes. They have toured with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Company, Chickenfoot, Alter Bridge, Def Leppard, Whitesnake, Nickelback, Rival Sons, Theory of a Deadman, Halestorm, Shinedown and Airbourne. You want hypnotic melodies? Thunderous rhythms? Blistering solos? Infectious hooks? Fist in the air anthems? You've got it all over 'Family Tree'.LP 1

Some Girls - Live In Texas '78Ranked 269/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
The tour combined small theatres and huge stadiums. The Fort Worth show had capacity for just 3000. The 1978 tour began in Lakeland, Florida on the 10th June, by the time they arrived in Texas the Stones had played 19 shows. Billboard magazine said of the tour, "No flash, no gimmicks, just rock 'n' roll." The band included Mick, Keith, Charlie, Ronnie, Bill and Ian Stewart on piano (the day of the Fort Worth show was his 40th birthday) as well as Ronnie's former Faces bandmate keyboard player (and now Texas resident) Ian 'Mac' McLagan.LP

Strong PersuaderOne of the most popular and successful blues albums ever released!

Mastered from the original analog tape by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound
Robert Cray is a musician that critics describe as one of the all-time great blues guitarists, and small wonder. No less than Rolling Stone describes his playing as distinctive and razor-sharp. They go on to say that Strong Persuader introduced a new generation of mainstream rock fans to the language and form of the blues. As much as anyone next to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Cray helped the blues not only survive, but thrive, says Acoustic Sounds' owner Chad Kassem.
Cray, a five-time Grammy winner, originally released Strong Persuader, his fifth studio album, in 1986 - his major label debut. Stinging urban blues by way of Texas and Memphis distinguish Cray's guitar mastery - since the release of Strong Persuader, Cray has gone on to record 15 Billboard-charting studio albums and has written or performed with everyone from Eric Clapton to Stevie Ray Vaughan, from Bonnie Raitt to John Lee Hooker. Inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame at the age of 57, he is one of the youngest living legends to receive the prestigious honor. And although Cray can look back over an astonishing three decade-long career, punctuated by his trademark sound and distinct playing style, he is far too busy moving forward as the amazing journey continues. 2012 saw Robert release his 16th studio album, Nothin' But Love and embark on yet another world tour.
