Some Time In New York City'
Some Time In New York CityReleased in 1972, it is John Lennon's third post-Beatles solo album, fifth with Yoko Ono, and third with producer Phil Spector. This album found the Lennon's in an explicitly political phase; understandable as Lennon was neck-deep in his struggle to remain in the United States, a conflict rooted in his antiwar and anti establishment politics and the enmity of the Nixon administration.LP1

Up In Arms (Awaiting Repress)We work hard, and we have a lot to say. Look around the planet - people are fed up with the corrupt ruling class. They destroy the planet and kill millions for profit, and the formula for our response is simple: Anger + applied knowledge = results. Don't just bitch. Change it.
- JOHN JOSEPH
At its purest, there is little that can match the visceral thrill and empowering spirit of hardcore. As frontman of New York City hardcore kings Cro-Mags, this is something John Joseph knows very well, and with Up In Arms, he and his Bloodclot compatriots deliver a furious collection that hits hard on every level. "In this band we're doing what each of us have always done: give it our all," he states plainly.
The results reflect the roots and passions of the individual members. Danzig/Murphy's Law guitarist Todd Youth was the first piece of the puzzle. "We've always talked about doing this record together, Todd had songs written and I had notebooks full of lyrics. In late September 2015, I went out to LA to do a triathlon and injured my calf muscle, so I couldn't race, and Todd said he could get some studio time. So, we went in and cut the demo. While there are things we may perceive as a negative in our lives, in fact the universe has a bigger plan, and that experience ultimately resulted in the record." Having been friends with Queens Of The Stone Age and Danzig powerhouse drummer Joey Castillo for three decades, the two musicians had long admired each other's work, and their collaboration has been a long time coming. Following Castillo's suggestion of bringing in Nick Oliveri (Queens Of The Stone Age/The Dwarves) to handle bass duties, the lineup was complete. The songs that comprise Up In Arms manifested after the quartet plugged in and let the music speak for them. "We didn't decide to try to play anything, these are the songs that happened when we started jamming, and I love this band because there are no egos involved. Our goal is to make the best music possible, period. I love it when those guys contribute with melodies, etc., and I've even helped with some of the arrangements. Because we all think alike, our lyrics deal with the issues of the day, and that makes for better songs."
Every track on Up In Arms lives up to the rallying cry of the album's title - the bursts of high energy hardcore act as the perfect accompaniment to Joseph setting his sights on injustice and the seemingly endless flaws of the contemporary world. The breakneck thrashing of "Slow Kill Genocide" is an anthem for everyone sickened by those responsible for "killing the planet and all its inhabitants through industry and war. They're fucking maniacs and must be stopped." The suitably titled "Manic" attacks with bared fangs, Joseph making it clear that you can only push someone so far before they will react with violence - a call to arms for the disenfranchised who want tomorrow's world to be better than today's. Tracked at NRG in Los Angeles, the raw, old-school production that leaps out from the speaker comes courtesy of producer Zeuss (Hatebreed, Revocation), and the record was mixed by Kyle McAulay at NRG. From the moment the opening title track explodes to life, it's clear that everyone involved is having a blast and playing from the heart, and that this is no frills / no bullshit music at its most passionate - every song evoking mental images of utter chaos in a heaving mosh pit.
For anyone approaching the album for the first time, Joseph has only this to say: "Turn the volume way the fuck up!" And with plans to tour everywhere, Bloodclot will be getting in a lot of faces in 2017 and beyond. "We are already writing material and the next album is in the works. But, for now, all we want is to hit the stage to support 'Up in Arms', and every single night leave every ounce of ourselves up there."

Too Young To Be In LoveToo Young To Be In Love is the first fully-realized Hunx and His Punx album, and the groups first for Hardly Art. It was recorded in New York City by Ivan Julian, one of the founding members of inimitable NYC punk legends Richard Hell and the Voidoids. This record was made in the same studio that one of Hunx's idols, Ronnie Spector, once recorded in. While it is preceded by the Gay Singles LP (True Panther Sounds/Matador Records, 2009), a collection of hard-to-find and out-of-print 7 singles, Too Young To Be In Love is the first proper studio record from Hunx and His Punx.
Too Young To Be In Love also marks the first time the group has ever been comprised entirely by punkettes, another name for the all girl band that band leader Seth Bogart (aka Hunx) always dreamed of. Shannon Shaw (of Shannon and the Clams) plays bass, and wrote three of the albums songs. Her powerful voice on Lovers Lane and The Curse of Being Young crackles and breaks with a raw ferocity that perfectly compliments Hunxs swoon-worthy nasal croon. This album also represents a distinct reversal of roles, the all-girl quartet (Shaw, plus guitarist Michelle Santamaria, drummer Erin Emslie, and Amy Blaustein on guitar/organ) bring the fire, while Hunx brings the sugar. All of the ladies sing on this album, and their voices combine to create some modern Wall of Sound magic.
Hunx and His Punx might be the first ever girl group fronted by a flamboyant gay male whose dream in life is to sound like a girl. They have created a unique new sound they refer to as Young Oldies, a mixture of '50s teenage rock n roll, '60s girl groups and bubblegum pop.
I only write songs out of heartbreak, says Hunx of the new record. Older songs focused on trashier homoerotic topics like cruising and boyfriend stealing. But Too Young To Be In Love is all about love and heartbreak. People tend to have scandalous ideas about Seth Hunx Bogart. This can happen when you try to French kiss the entire front row at one of your shows, pose for photographs nude or bare everything in the video for Lust For Life by the band Girls. But behind all of this is a sweet and somewhat innocent entertainer who knows how to put on a show.1. Lovers Lane

The Songs Of Bob Dylan, Vol. 1On Songs of Bob Dylan, Joan Osborne unleashes her sizable gifts as a vocalist and interpreter upon The Bard's celebrated canon. With performances honed by the time Osborne spent polishing them during Joan Osborne Sings The Songs Of Bob Dylan - two critically acclaimed two-week residencies she performed at New York City's CafÉ Carlyle in March 2016 and 2017, the seven-time Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum-selling singer and songwriter, whom The New York Times has called a fiercely intelligent, no-nonsense singer, winds her supple, soulful voice around Dylan's poetic, evocative lyrics, etching gleaming new facets in them along the way.
The album spans Dylan's beloved standards from the '60s and '70s (Masters of War, Highway 61 Revisited, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35, Buckets of Rain,Tangled Up In Blue) to some of Osborne's favorites from his later albums, including Dark Eyes (from 1985's Empire Burlesque), Ring Them Bells (from 1989's Oh Mercy), Tryin' To Get To Heaven (from 1997's Time Out of Mind), and High Water (from 2001's Love and Theft). His versions are legendary and I'm not trying to improve on them, Osborne says. I'm just trying to sing beautiful songs and let people hear them. Murphy's Law (Awaiting Repress)Founded in Astoria, Queens in 1983 Murphy's Law are huge part of the New York
and American hardcore legacy. Their albums, such as the self entitled, "Murphy's
Law" and the 1989 follow up "Back With A Bong" helped creating the sound of
New York Hardcore back then, as well as what it stands for today. In 2008 their
legacy even lead to the use of the song "A Day In A Life" (from the band's debut) in
the Liberty City Hardcore radio station on the Rockstar video game "Grand Theft
Auto IV". Murphy's Law never abandoned the Hardcore scene or their fans. During
the extensive career Jimmy Gestapo stayed true his scene earning him & the band
the name of one of NYHC's all time favorites.
The eponymous Murphy's Law debut is perhaps one of the most rocking New York punk releases to appear in the '80s. The manic tempos, masochistic vocals, and other hardcore signatures are toned down here to better suit the group's party message. Apolitical when compared to hard-line contemporaries like Cro-Mags and Agnostic Front, Murphy's Law shoots for an inebriated slice-of-life essence more aligned with Boston's Gang Green. The right-wing and skinhead references didn't exactly sit well with some '80s punk observers who mistakenly labeled the band as fascist. But even a casual study of California Pipeline and Ilsa reveals an allegiance contrary to the skinhead stereotype. Highlights include the Ace Frehley-inspired guitar work on Skinhead Rebel as well as the rockabilly Wahoo Day groove. A must-have for fans of the group and a strong recommendation for any '80s punk scholar, Murphy's Law is simply a fun ride.

Electricity By Candlelight: NYC 2/13/97
Remastered From The Original Source Tapes
On the night of February 13, 1997 Alex Chilton and his band were getting ready to play their second set of the night at the Knitting Factory in New York City when the lights went out. What happened was this album, a spontaneous off the cuff performance by Alex on a borrowed acoustic guitar with his drummer Richard Dworkin sitting in for half the set. Fortunately Jeffrey Vargon was there with his tape deck and microphone.
This is Alex Chilton thinking on his feet, totally in the moment, bouncing songs and ideas off the folks that stuck around for a real one-of-a-kind exchange. This is as close and personal as it gets--anyone who ever saw Alex over the years will recognize the artist who always did it his way in this simple recording--- a surprising amount of country music, some beloved Beach Boys and a few he probably played for the first time that night.

Mainstream Perfection: Melodic Devices, Passionate Singing, Sophisticated Arrangements, Jazzy Backdrop Walk Down 52nd Street
Commanding Sonics: Mobile Fidelity Edition Sets the New Standard in How Joel's 1978 Classic Should-and Does-Sound
Chart-Topper Certified Seven-Times Platinum: Includes "Big Shot," "Honesty," "My Life"
Some artists embrace their success by repeating the steps that originally granted them fame. Billy Joel did the opposite, refusing to be contained by prescribed approaches or constrained by a given label. The follow-up to the breakthrough The Stranger, 52nd Street further expands on its predecessor's bold production techniques and inventive arrangements, incorporating more sophisticated textures as well as reflecting a jazz edge gleaned from New York City's thriving club scene.
A key component of Mobile Fidelity's Billy Joel catalog restoration series, The Stranger is mastered from the original master tapes and pressed on 45RPM 180 gram LP at RTI. The wider and deeper grooves-as well as the meticulous mastering process-yield resplendent dynamics, broad soundstages, three-dimensional perspectives, and tonal balances absent from prior editions. Indeed, Joel wouldn't sound more realistic if were playing ten rows away from you onstage. This is how you want to experience the 1978 LP that captured the Grammy Award for Album of the Year.
Teaming again with producer Phil Ramone, Joel capitalizes on his momentum, churning out another direct-sounding affair replete with captivating melodic devices, showmanship accents, and penetrating lyrics. The singer's concision and focus is evident via the tune's lengths, with only "Until the Night" breaking the six-minute mark. Hit singles "Big Shot" and "My Life" rattle forth with an urgency and intensity that Joel had not previously demonstrated, the combination of passionate deliveries, snide overtones, and insistent grooves setting the table for what follows.
Broadening his palette, and drawing from New York's thriving jazz club scene and the city's late-70s grit, Joel splashes Latin and jazz colors on several pieces-even employing veterans such as Dave Grusin and Freddie Hubbard to contribute along with a cast that includes a team of background vocalists and horn players. Everything is tastefully appointed, and yet the vocalist's trademark Broadway gaze and knack for the grand gesture coincide with the straight-ahead swagger.
52nd Street is one of the main reasons why Joel has always been championed for consistency. Everything here, from the production to the stand-up songs, helped redefine mainstream pop-rock. More than three decades later, it's finally available in fidelity that rivals that of those Columbia Records' master tapes produced right on 52nd Street. Mobile Fidelity takes you there and Joel sweeps you away.

The Three Sounds were part of the trio explosion. Begun in 1956 in Benton Harbor, Michigan as the Four Sounds and consisting of Gene Harris on piano, Andrew Simpkins on bass and Bill Dowdy on drums (the saxophonist was dropped by the time the group moved to Washington, D.C. in 1957), the Sounds eventually migrated to New York City where they were discovered by Lou Donaldson. After a single record for Riverside with Nat Adderley, the Three Sounds signed an exclusive contract with Alfred Lion on Blue Note Records. Over the course of five years, the Sounds released nine LPs and appeared on albums by Lou Donaldson and Stanley Turrentine.

Too TrueIn the summer of 2012, between tours supporting End of Daze, I
locked out the world and sat down in my apartment to write a new record
- clear view of the New York City sky through iron bars like a promise.
Like all compulsive minds, I was waiting to let the muse loose. And so
I spent the next week in a sparkling haze, and when I emerged from the
frenzy to go back on tour, indeed ten new songs came with. They were
bound together, not just by an overall sonic palette and new guitar pedal,
but by time, intention, and fervor. Do you hear Suede? Siouxie? Cold-wave
Patti? Madonna? Cure? Velvet and Paisley Undergrounds? Stone Roses?
Cuz I did.
Still later, in November 2012, I returned to Hollywood to record among
the lingering Pet Sounds at East West Studios, in pursuit of a bigger,
darker, more urgent sound. Sitting in the room with my favorite team of
regulars (Richard Gottehrer and Sune Rose Wagner producing, Alonzo
Vargas engineering), it was easy to add some flesh to my song skeletons.
But, unfortunately, the previous year of touring had reduced my voice
to a pale spectre of its former self. I left California with the heavy burden
of an unfinished album.
Truly one of those disguised blessings though - the extra time was a
gift. These songs weren't done at all! So I recorded vocals alone in my
bedroom studio, fueled by Rainer Maria Rilke, Anais Nin, Arthur Rimbaud,
Paul Verlaine, Charles Baudelaire, Sylvia Plath; the punk poet singers
Patti Smith and Lou Reed; and finally, an unhealthy obsession with the
Surrealists' manifesto of desire.
I write this now, many months later, on the up. So much of my life has
been defined, aided, and even saved by music. Too True is my best
attempt at joining the rock'n'roll ranks, of chasing pop into the dark,
and I am as ever, humbled that you listen.

REDI-THR-5910xRick Rizzo And Tara Key
Double StarLimited Edition
Just ten years ago, Rick Rizzo and Tara Key put the finishing touches on their Thrill Jockey debut, Dark Edson Tiger, did a few live shows including All Tomorrow's Parties at Camber Sands, and jubilantly declared the whole affair a rousing success, vowing to ride the tsunami swell of momentum into their next project.
And now, in a Van Winkle like-daze, they are back, a new batch of instrumental collaborations ready to test the brave new decade. It would be easy to say that they simply wanted to wait out the debacle of poor government and unmitigated corporate greed, but truth be told, the seeds for Double Star were sown in early live New York City sessions with bassist Tim Harris not long after the Dark Edson dust had settled. These let-the-tape-roll sessions produced some of the guitar psychedelia that long-time observers might have expected from these two, including the epic tracks that now comprise Noisy Attic as well as the genesis of Interruptive Organ.
The DNA for this album of course lies in their respective Kentucky punk rock roots, but a lot of living has been done between then and now. Double Star is a barrel-aged kind of record, sometimes inviting small fragrant sips, but sometimes asking you to knock one back and burn the throat a little. Worth waiting a decade for.1. S+@DIUM ROCK: Five Nights At The OperaIn July of 2015, noted rock band Titus Andronicus [hereafter +@] made
The wider world shook upon the impact of The Most Lamentable Tragedy
[hereafter TMLT], the triple-LP rock opera that immediately established itself
as the most ambitious punk record of all time, a distinction challenged only
by a foolish few.
Meanwhile, in the hallowed halls of Shea Stadium, New York City's longestrunning
active all-ages DIY space, +@ was doing the unthinkable again,
becoming the first band in the history of NYC DIY to sell out five
consecutive nights at the same venue. While these epic shows ostensibly
served as a record-release celebration for TMLT (as well as an uproarious
shindig for the 30th birthday of +@ singer-songwriter Patrick Stickles), they
shattered the limits of mere promotional exercise and reached mythical status.
Sadly for the wider world, you had to be there until now.
+@ and their patient patrons at Merge Records are pleased to announce the
new live LP, S+@DIUM ROCK: Five Nights at the Opera, a record which will
allow fans everywhere their chance to relive the auspicious occasion from the
comforts of their own home. +@'s position as the most thrilling live act in
rock and roll has long been etched in stone, but never before has that
riveting energy been captured on wax as it is here.
The A-side to S+@DIUM ROCK revisits some of TMLT's most celebrated
hits in a newly concise context, stripping away all studio wizardry until only
the primal passion remains. The B-side offers fresh electric arrangements of
the largely acoustic fifth act of TMLT's rock opera narrative, presenting a new
perspective on the material Tiny Mix Tapes praised for "emotional intensity
unrivaled anywhere in rock music," as well as debuting the previously
unreleased TMLT outtake, "69 Stones." Taken as a whole, S+@DIUM ROCK

SQÜRL is: Jim Jarmusch, Carter Logan and Shane Stoneback. An enthusiastically marginal rock band from New York City who like big drums & distorted guitars, cassette recorders, loops, feedback, sad country songs, molten stoner core, chopped & screwed hip-hop, and imaginary movie scores.
SQÜRL began in 2009 when Jim Jarmusch and Carter Logan teamed with producer Shane Stoneback to record some original music for the film The Limits of Control. Echoing the varied Spanish landscapes captured in the film, the three emerged with a set of slow-motion psychedelic rock instrumentals (releasing them as Bad Rabbit). Following these scoring sessions Jim, Shane, and Carter continued to record new originals while also exploring the back-alleys of American country, noise, and psychedelia. SQÜRL released a series of 3 EPs, recorded over a 3 year period by Shane at Treefort Recording in Brooklyn, NY. Jarmusch and Logan's collaboration continued as a duo with SQÜRL's acclaimed score for Paterson, and a trio with Stoneback for EP #260.1. Solstice

First Time 180 Gram Audiophile Presentation
Including Smash Hits Everybody Dance - Dance, Dance, Dance- Strike Up The Band
Impeccably Mastered From The Original Atlantic Tapes By Joe Reagoso
In the early seventies, Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards were playing in rock and soul bands across New York City and the east coast, meeting up with Tony Thompson along the way and forming the rudiments of what would become one of the most powerful and successful r&b units ever known as Chic.
In 1977, they hit the top of the charts a couple of times with their smash debut single Dance, Dance, Dance as well as the killer funk of Everybody Dance.
The first album simply titled Chic also featured some very amazing playing and more deep soul tracks like Sao Paulo, You Can Get By and the funk infused Strike Up The Band.
Along with vocalists Alfa Anderson, Norma Jean Wright and future superstar Luther Vandross, Chic was the band of choice for party people, dance clubs, and radio stations all over with this debut album.
With star power tracks and their stellar instrumental funk infused musicianship, Chic's debut became a staple at retail and on the dancefloors and started a trend which has now lasted over four decades for this Rock Hall Of Fame winning band.

TV En Français13 years and 3 albums in, We Are Scientists are back with album number 4.
The new long player was recorded in New York City over the last year with producer Chris Coady (Smith Westerns, Beach House, Gang Gang Dance, Blonde Redhead), and will land in the middle of the band's 5 month tour of Europe, America & Australia.
Asked to comment on the unusual title, bassist Chris Cain explains, It's in French, I think. At least some of the words.
Singer and guitarist Keith Murray elaborates: We wanted to get at the seemingly inevitable parallax that happens between two people in a relationship, that sense that you get the gist of what the other person needs and wants and how they feel about you, but only the gist - you're relying on these broad cues a lot of the time to tell you what the hell's going on.
We Are Scientists exploded onto the U.K. scene with one of 2005's iconic indie dance rock records, 'With Love & Squalor'. Years of touring followed, as did a second album, 'Brain Thrust Mastery', that spawned now-classic nightlife anthem 'After Hours' (a #11 charting single). Main stage slots at Reading & Leeds,
Glastonbury, T In The Park, and festivals all over Europe, as well as appearances on Later with Jools Holland, and their own series of comedic MTV shorts ('Steve Wants His Money'), followed by third album 'Barbara'. all served to cement and increase their legacy.
Now, after releasing a 7-inch and a 5-song EP in 2013, the band prepare to share their finest collection of songs to date.
According to Cain, The guy who was producing everything looked different from the one who did those other three records.
Murray further enthuses, Yeah, working for the first time with Chris Coady as producer had a huge effect - he has such a distinct and well-developed sense of what's cool and what sounds good, but he's also emphatic about keeping the rawness of the performances in there.
Drummer Andy Burrows, who also recorded 'Barbara' with W.A.S., relocated to New York for a year to work on the new album, and lends his world-class efforts behind the kit and elsewhere.

UNIM-CAR-2062xJD & The Straight Shot
Where I've Been"I think this is the best work we've ever done," explains JD & The Straight Shot founder and frontman Jim Dolan of the band's latest release, Where I've Been. "I'm so proud of the music that my band and I have put together. I believe in this album."
Produced by Joe Walsh, Where I've Been features several breakthrough singles including "Governor's Song," which challenges some of today's most well-known political figures; "Under That Hood," a transformative single that tells the tragic story of Trayvon Martin; and "Hard to Find," which will be featured in the highly-anticipated film, St. Vincent, starring Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy.
Dolan's day gig is Cablevision Systems CEO and Executive Chairman of Madison Square Garden, where he also oversees New York sports teams such as the Knicks and the Rangers. Music is his passion.
"I needed something in my life where I felt like I was actually creating," says Dolan. "Most of what I do as an executive is orchestrate. I don't actually set up cable and I don't really shoot hoops," he says, laughing. "Music is something I've played since I was a kid. It's me purely expressing myself."
JD & The Straight Shot's creative nucleus is Dolan and guitarist Marc Copely (B.B. King), who pen all the band's music and lyrics. Instrumentally indispensable is guitarist Aidan Dolan; keyboardist Brian Mitchell (Bob Dylan, Levon Helm); and drummer Joe Magistro (The Black Crowes). Also part of the band are some of pop music's finest session players, bassist Zev Katz (Aretha Franklin, Elton John), and violinist Erin Slaver (Rod Stewart, Trace Adkins, Martina McBride).
Dolan started JD & The Straight Shot in 2000. The band has recorded four previous albums: Midnight Run (2012), Can't Make Tears (2011), Right On Time (2008), and Nothing To Hide (2005) - as well as an EP, Daily News Blues (2010).
The band's style is steeped in the quiet fire of Americana, with distinctive elements of the blues and mystical, rustic, New Orleans-flavored roots music - topped off with a dash of the classic rock of Dolan's youth.
"I grew up on bands like the Allman Brothers," says Dolan. "We played those records until the grooves wore right off of them."
JD & The Straight Shot has been covered by The New York Times, Billboard, and New York Magazine, among other publications, and performed on "Good Day New York." Their song "Can't Make Tears" is the theme song for AMC's TV show Hell on Wheels, and their music has been featured in many films, including the critically acclaimed August: Osage County.
The group has opened for the Eagles on several tours, including the current "History of the Eagles" tour, the "Summer 2010" tour, and the band's stadium tour with the Dixie Chicks and Keith Urban. JD & The Straight Shot has also opened up for both Joe Walsh and Don Henley's solo tours, the James Gang reunion tour, and performed at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Austin City Limits.1. People ChangesDouble bassist/singer-songwriter Nat Baldwins forthcoming album People Changes is much like the stark Maine setting which it was created. Of course, his fourth full-length shows welcome markings of his experimental bent from years as the Dirty Projectors bassist and former disciple of free jazz legend Anthony Braxton, but the serene isolation of 17 million acres of New England forestland make this cabin-born set intimate and sincere.
Baldwin first penned the songs in 2007, allowing the arrangements to evolve before the final recording in the spring of 2010. A lean ensemble of talented, time-proven friends were enlisted for the studio, some dating back to his New Hampshire childhood, chosen specifically to create the albums earnest live sound.
Their apt decision to record voice and bass live on most tracks is quickly felt on opener A Little Lost, letting Baldwins softly warbled falsetto hug a heartfelt cover of Arthur Russells sacred love song. Woodwinds flit and pull against contrabass pulses on Weights, then recede to let Baldwins bare performance stir on Real Fakes.
The full cast of Nats touring ensemble handsomely matches the bold arrangements of Lifted, followed by jagged improvisation on What Is There and a tender rendition of Kurt Weismans Let My Spirit Rise to finish. Charged throughout by lyrics crisp and strong, People Changes is a slice through the void of late nights spent among tall pines.
People Changes was recorded by Matt Walsh at Florida Keys Studio in New York City in May/June of 2010, mixed by Scott Solter, and mastered by Paul Gold at Salt Mastering. Guests include Matt Bauder (clarinets), Caley Monahon-Ward (violin), Brett Deschenes (trumpet), Will Glass (drums), Al Mead (guitar) and Jeremy Leclair (alto saxophone). The album follows a split EP with Extra Life (2008, Shatter Your Leaves) on which earlier versions of Weights and Lifted appear, Most Valuable Player (2008), Enter the Winter (2006) and Lights Out EP (2005) on Broken Sparrow Records, and his experimental free jazz debut Solo Contrabass (2003, Peacock Recordings).1. Are You Serious (Awaiting Repress)Andrew Bird has always been highly respected and has held a captive audience with his story telling prowess, but it's with his new album, Are You Serious, that he has made a breakthrough record. Coming out via his new label home, Loma Vista Recordings (Spoon, St. Vincent, HEALTH), and produced by Tony Berg, the album propels him into a new category of American songwriters. It's his most direct lyrically to date with key contributions from Fiona Apple and Blake Mills.
Three years ago while traveling west to California to start a new life with his wife and young child they stopped at the family farm in rural Illinois for two weeks to catch their breath. The previous two years had been intense to say the least: raising a child in New York City as his wife battled a serious illness. With these dark days behind them he spent the next seven days on the front porch writing the lyrics for what became Are You Serious. It's a breakthrough for him in that it gets to the quick of the matter. This is the record he needed to make right now and is certain to put him in the leading class of American songwriter.
The album was put together with a rigor akin to a novelist or playwright and musically crafted like a wrecking crew session where you have to be good right in that moment. There's little folksy quaintness or whimsical flights of fancy. There's less wordplay and more intent to process some difficult times that he went through. From the album art, created by the godfather of conceptual art John Baldessari to foregoing his traditional writing process, Bird has emerged from challenging times and a new process with an album that may be his best.
The first single Capsized" begins to take you down the path that Bird so carefully crafted on the record, speaking from an unguarded point of view while keeping with the melodic, syntactic standards that he has held true to since the beginning of his career.1. Capsized

It should come as no surprise that after years of touring with his band Monotonix,
once hailed by SPIN as the "most exciting live rock band in rock 'n' roll, that Yonatan
Gat would carry that same intensity in his own act. After five successful years of
playing 1000 shows spanning 40 countries and 5 continents and releasing three
records on Drag City with his co-founded band, the New York-by-way-of-Tel-Aviv
guitarist took some time to himself in Portugal. While there, he set out to create a
solo album of a different sort of beat.
Inspired by African ensembles such as Orchestra Baobab, and the early work of
Brazilian psychedelic experimentalists Os Mutantes - Gat's truly amazing talents
shine out on Iberian Passage, blending his punk influences with the wild improvisational spirit of Miles Davis and Charles Mingus. Gat produced the album himself;
joining forces with Portuguese drummer Igor Domingues. The raw and unique nature
of the recording is augmented by the incredible versatility of the shredded guitar riffs melted between pulsing African-inspired drums. A masterful guitarist, Gat recently
won Village Voice's Best Guitarist of 2013 with a sound he describes as homeless
between the Middle East and New York.1. Escorpião

WARB-NON-3208xThe Staves & yMusic
The Way Is ReadNonesuch Records releases The Way Is Read, a twelve-song album by the English trio The Staves-Emily, Jessica, and Camilla Staveley-Taylor (all vocals)-and New York City-based ensemble yMusic. After being commissioned in 2016 by Justin Vernon's Eaux Claires Festival to collaborate on a live performance piece, The Staves delved deep into yMusic's catalogue of contemporary classical compositions to find pieces suited to their lyrics and vocals. While the Festival is known for bringing musicians together for one-off performances, this is the first time one of those partnerships has made the leap into a studio album. The LP was produced by Rob Moose and Jessica Staveley-Taylor and mixed and engineered by Brian Joseph at his studio, Hive, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
The two groups will come together live again at a series of special shows at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis on December 1 and 2, and they also will perform on public radio's A Prairie Home Companion on December 16. The Way Is Read is available to pre-order now from iTunes and the Nonesuch Store, along with an instant download of the album track Trouble on My Mind, which can be heard on Spotify. You can watch a video for that song, directed by yMusic flautist Alex Sopp, here:
Emily Staveley-Taylor says of the collaboration, Our aim from the outset was to truly collaborate with yMusic. We wanted to feel like instruments and join in with some of yMusic's existing work, using our voices in ways we hadn't previously explored. We chopped up compositions and put them together again in new ways. We took old folk songs and made them abstract. The idea of forming an orchestra with these incredible musicians was fascinating. What we have ended up with is everything we'd hoped, more than we dreamed, and hopefully the tip of the iceberg.
Rob Moose of yMusic adds, When Justin raised the possibility of our groups collaborating, we immediately upped the stakes by focusing on a combination of new Staves songs and transformations of yMusic's composed works. It was as much a thrill to hear songs emerge organically over sections of intricate chamber music as it was satisfying to strip songs of the instrument that created them, whether guitar or piano, in order to craft new connective tissue. This project was born of voice memos sent back and forth across the seas, two frenetic days in a Manhattan rehearsal space, a festival set, and a single day of recording in the woods outside of Eau Claire.
The Staves, also known as Jessica, Camilla and Emily Staveley-Taylor, moved to Minneapolis from London in the summer of 2016, where they lived for a year in order to be closer to Eau Claire, Wisconsin, friend and collaborator Justin Vernon's hometown, which has become a creative hub and second home to them. The sisters have worked with Stones and Who producer Glyn Johns, as well as Laura Marling and Ryan Adams producer Ethan Johns. In addition to their three albums and several EPs, The Staves have headlined tours across North America and Europe and performed on tours with Bon Iver, Florence and the Machine, Angus and Julia Stone, and The Civil Wars. The New York Times said of their 2015 Vernon-produced Nonesuch debut, If I Was, the songs are illuminated from within, and Magnet said, The perfection just goes on and on until you start to wonder: Are they human?
Hailed by Performance Today's Fred Child as one of the groups that has really helped to shape the future of classical music, yMusic comprises six New York City instrumentalists-violinist Rob Moose, violist Nadia Sirota, cellist Gabriel Cabezas, clarinettist Hideki Aomori, flutist Alex Sopp, and trumpeter CJ Camerieri-flourishing in the overlap between the pop and classical worlds. Their virtuosic execution and unique configuration has attracted the attention of high profile collaborators-from Paul Simon to Ben Folds to JosÉ González-and inspired an expanding repertoire of original works by some of today's foremost composers, including Nico Muhly and Andrew Norman.1. Boomtown Gems (Discontinued)Apache is just looking for a good time. With songs like Sugar Glidin' and Russian Roulette, the boys are here to party!
Signed amidst broken limbs, before Birdman even heard one note, Apache now brings forth their first diamond-- Boomtown Gems. Described as Kiss meets The Ramones meets The New York Dolls, the albums sways and moves to the groove of that '70s glam/punk thing. The songs are rock n' roll club hits with elements of '70s pop, glam, and rock, and feature some serious stadium drums. One after the next, they hit like a White Hammer. Boomtown Gems was recorded and produced at Screaming Viking Studios with Matthew Johnson and Apache, and mixed at New And Improved Recordings with Eli Crews.
Featuring members of The Cuts, Parchman Farm, Ghenghis Khan, and others, Apache is simply a band of four dudes. One guitar. One bass. One drummer. One singer. The big guy sings falsetto, while the surfer bro behind the kit bangs out beats heavy enough to ride any wave. The guitar player is some sorta reincarnation of Jimi Hendrix meeting Kurt Cobain in a dark club in New York City. And the frontman, leading the charge...he is simply known as Apache.
Just when it seems that no one can really effectively duplicate the early-'70s glam sound, along comes Apache from San Francisco with a ramrodding, yet slovenly swing that booms and crushes those notions into a fine powder. --Victim of Time
