Mastered For Vinyl And Lacquers Created By Kevin Gray

Imagine an album that could contain tracks by Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Elvis Costello, as well as Frank Sinatra, Cream, and Van Morrison. That's part of the lineup on this various-artists sampler of music used in the television series The Sopranos, music that dates from each of the last five decades of the 20th century, from Bo Diddley's 1950s hit ''I'm a Man'' to Eurythmics' ''I've Tried Everything'' from their 1999 reunion album, Peace. Familiar songs like Sinatra's ''It Was a Very Good Year'' are given a new flavor by being sequenced between very different yet oddly complementary songs. The most interesting moments, however, come with the less familiar material -- cast member ''Little Steven'' Van Zandt and the Disciples of Soul's ''Inside of Me,'' Elvis Costello & the Attractions' live take on ''Complicated Shadows,'' Wyclef Jean's rap over Sly & the Family Stone's ''Family Affair'' on ''Blood Is Thicker Than Water,'' which refers specifically to the mafia family story line of the show. The result sounds like an hour with the radio station of your dreams, which is what this kind of album aspires to be. ~ AllMusic Review by William Ruhlman

The Grand Master Of The Soprano Saxophone (Pure Pleasure)

Sidney Bechet's historic recordings for Blue Note and RCA Victor tend to overshadow some of his other work because they have been reissued more frequently, though there are lesser-known dates worth acquiring as well. This Columbia LP compiles three separate recording sessions made between 1938 and 1947. Bechet sticks almost exclusively to soprano sax throughout each of them and has ample space for his solos, full of his trademark heavy vibrato.

The earliest set matches him with drummer Zutty Singleton, bassist Henry Turner, and guitarist Leonard Ware (all members of his working band at the time), along with pianist Dave Bowman and baritone saxophonist Ernie Caceres. The Bechet-Singleton collaboration Jungle Drums has delightful solos by the two reeds, along with Singleton's exotic tom-toms.

Six tracks come from a 1947 quartet with pianist Lloyd Phillips, bassist Pops Foster, and either Freddie Moore or Arthur Herbert on drums. Bechet's swinging tribute to a legendary jazzman, Buddy Bolden Stomp, a romp through Just One Of Those Things, and a heartfelt arrangement of Laura are the highlights of this session.

Another 1947 session gives a preview of the future of classic jazz, featuring a sextet led by Bechet's star pupil, a young Bob Wilber, along with Dick Wellstood, who would rise to fame as a master stride interpreter. Bechet plays soprano sax and Wilber sticks to clarinet on two numbers, though they switch roles on Kansas City Man Blues. While Wilber doesn't have Bechet's strong vibrato on soprano sax, they are harder to tell apart on clarinet.

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Andando El Tiempo

    Carla Bley: Piano

Andy Sheppard: Tenor Saxophone, Soprano Saxophone

    Steve Swallow: Bass

Andando el Tiempo features new music of wide emotional compass by Carla Bley, and underlines her originality and resourcefulness as a jazz composer. "Saints Alive!" sets up animated conversations between the participants with striking statements from Steve Swallow's bass guitar and Andy Sheppard's soprano sax. The stately "Naked Bridges/Diving Brides" draws inspiration from Mendelssohn and the poetry of Paul Haines. And the powerful three part title composition - which addresses the trials and tribulations of recovery from addiction - moves through sorrow to hopefulness and joy. The trio with Sheppard and Swallow has been an ideal vehicle for Carla's writing for more than 20 years and also provides one of the best contexts for her unique piano playing. Like the critically lauded ECM album Trios (2012), Andando el Tiempo was recorded at Lugano's RSI Studio and produced by Manfred Eicher.

This is one of Joe Farrell's finest recordings. Switching between tenor, soprano and flute, Farrell had to be good because he was joined in the pianoless trio by bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones. The group performs two standards, three Garrison originals and one by Farrell; it is a tossup as to who takes honors. Farrell is in consistently creative form but Garrison's occasional solos and Jones's polyrhythmic accompaniment are also noteworthy.

    Strauss: Vier Letzte Lieder

In 2015, we are celebrating the centenary of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, one of the greatest singers of the 20th century. The sublime and moving culmination of Richard Strauss's love affair with the soprano voice, the Four Last Songs are interpreted by Schwarzkopf with insight, wisdom and gentle radiance. In the early years of his career George Szell was mentored by Richard Strauss himself, and he provides Schwarzkopf with an exquisitely sensitive orchestral context for all nine songs in this classic anthology.

    Orff: Carmina Burana

'O Fortuna' - the number that opens and closes Carl Orff's Carmina Burana - is the music that launched a thousand TV commercials and epic film scores. Its popularity is hardly surprising: those huge, crushing blocks of choral and orchestral sound are enough to stun anyone into submission. Then, quite suddenly, they give way to the hypnotic whirling of life's Wheel of Fortune...at first the tone is hushed, then the chanting strikes home with terrifying power.

    Aion

With the industrial textures of their eponymous debut behind them, the fifth album from Dead Can Dance (Aion, released in 1990) is perhaps the most focused and concise of their albums. Predominately recorded at their own studio in Southern Ireland, it features guest vocals from soprano David Navarro Sust. His vocals add to Brendan and Lisa's opposing yet complimentary styles. The Middle Ages and the early Renaissance are a core influence for Aion; an atmosphere only amplified by the album's cover, a section from the Earth phase of Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch's famed triptych, The Garden of Earthly Delights.

    The Dreamer Is The Dream

For his third ECM album as a leader, Chris Potter presents a new acoustic quartet that naturally blends melodic rhapsody with rhythmic muscle. The group includes superlative musicians well known to followers of ECM's many recordings from New York over the past decade: keyboardist David Virelles, bassist Joe Martin and drummer Marcus Gilmore, who each shine in addition to the leader on multiple horns. The Dreamer Is the Dream features Potter on tenor saxophone - the instrument that has made him one of the most admired players of his generation - in the striking opener Heart in Hand and such album highlights as Yasodhara, as well as on soprano sax (Memory and Desire) and bass clarinet (the title track).

Potter is an artist who employs his considerable technique in service of music rather than spectacle, says The New Yorker, and his composing develops in texture and atmosphere with every album. Along with his previous ECM releases, Imaginary Cities and The Sirens, he has appeared on some of the label's most acclaimed discs, including Paul Motian's classic Lost in a Dream and Dave Holland's Grammy Award-winning What Goes Around.

This album is rightfully co-credited to Don Cherry (trumpet), who ably trades blows with John Coltrane (tenor/soprano sax) throughout. The Avant-Garde also boasts the debut studio recording of Coltrane playing soprano sax -- on The Blessing -- in addition to his continuing advancements on tenor.

Although these tracks were recorded during the summer of 1960, they remained shelved for nearly six years.

Joining Coltrane and Cherry are essentially the rest of the members of the Ornette Coleman Quartet, Ed Blackwell (drums) and Charlie Haden (bass) on Cherryco and The Blessing, as well as Percy Heath (bass) on the remaining three selections. This is fitting, as over half of the album consists of early Coleman compositions. Coltrane's integration into this band works with some extraordinarily fresh results. Neither Cherry nor Coltrane makes any radical departures on this album; however, it's the ability of each to complement the other both in terms of modal style and -- perhaps more importantly -- texture that lends heavily to the success of these sides. Cherry's brisk and somewhat nasal intonations on The Blessing mimic those of Miles Davis, albeit with shorter flourishes and heavily improvised lines. When combined with Coltrane's well-placed -- if not somewhat reserved -- solos, the mutual value of both is dramatically increased. Blackwell -- the only other musician besides Cherry and Coltrane to be featured on every track -- provides some non-conventional percussive accompaniment. His contributions to The Blessing and workout on the aptly titled Focus on Sanity are primal.

    Eternamente (Verismo Arias)

For Eternamente, her first studio recording in six years, soprano Angela Gheorghiu focuses on Italian composers of the generation that followed Verdi and predominantly on repertoire she has not sung before - including some fascinating rarities. Joining her for duets from Mascagni Cavalleria Rusticana and Giordano's Andrea ChÉnieris another star of today's opera stage, tenor Joseph Calleja. Eternamente is described as a collection of verismo - the term used generically for Italian opera of the immediate post-Verdi era. No matter when they were composed, and no matter what their subject matter, all these operas demand great passion and commitment from their performers - and they get it from Angela Gheorghiu. "It is like my soul, it is something different, it is not the voice," she explained in an interview with Opera magazine. "The voice is also there, it has to be there, and it has had to be prepared - but at that moment of the performance, there is more. The response is never a conscious exaggeration - it is a natural expression. I am never pretending. It is just how I am at that moment." The character and impact of her voice were summarized thus in Gramophone: "With her smooth and dark-toned soprano, a voice at once powerfully firm and vulnerable, Gheorghiu stands out from an entire generation of talented singers. Her sound is convincingly Italianate in the great tradition; her voice, once heard, is never forgotten."

the second in our series of vinyl reissues of the original Virgin Albums.
Geoff Leigh had left the group and Lindsay Cooper joined on Bassoon,

some of the Cow's best loved tunes, like Half Asleep Half Awake and
Bittern Storm Over Ulm. For the second half the material was all written in
the studio, using loops, vari-speed tapes and electronics, and
superimposing live improvisation and composed passages. 180 gram HQ

    Duets

Famed opera singers Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazón collaborate again for their much anticipated Duets album. Already a platinum-seller internationally, this album is a collection of their favorite pieces from the world's most celebrated operas including La Bohème and RomÉo et Juliette. As a gift to one another, Anna and Rolando also sing in each other's native language with duets from Luisa Fernanda and Iolanta. This release coincides with the pair's engagement at New York's Metropolitan Opera in Gounod's RomÉo et Juliette from September-December, 2007. Netrebko and Villazón established themselves as the new operatic dream team when they sang in the Salzburg Festival production of Verdi's La Traviata in 2005 (their interpretations are preserved on Deutsche Grammophon CD and DVD). Since then, they have conquered the world's stages in Gounod's RomÉo et Juliette in Los Angeles, and Verdi's Rigoletto at New York's Metropolitan Opera (conducted by Plácido Domingo).

    Return To Forever

The legendary first lineup of Chick Corea's fusion band Return to Forever debuted on this classic album (titled after the group but credited to Corea), featuring Joe Farrell on soprano sax and flute, the Brazilian team of vocalist Flora Purim and drummer/percussionist Airto Moreira, and electric bass whiz Stanley Clarke. It wasn't actually released in the U.S. until 1975, which was why the group's second album, Light as a Feather, initially made the Return to Forever name. Nonetheless, Return to Forever is every bit as classic, using a similar blend of spacy electric-piano fusion and Brazilian and Latin rhythms. It's all very warm, light, and airy, like a soft breeze on a tropical beach.
