Bob Dylan was at several crossroads in the mid-1970s. Artistically, he was largely written off as being past his prime. Emotionally, he was suffering through a painful divorce from his then-wife Sara Lowndes. Creatively, he appeared at a stalemate, his previous decades unprecedented run of transformational brilliance finished. Then came Blood on the Tracks.
A start-to-finish cycle that documents a lovers pursuit of, entanglement with, and loss of a woman, the bracingly intimate 1975 effort remains one of the most encompassing break-up albums ever made and ranks as the most personal statement of the Bards career. To hear it is to experience the agony, frustration, trauma, highs, lows, confusion, sadness, and, ultimately, requisite redemption associated with intimate relationships gone astray. Harold Budd: RemixesEmerging from the 60s US avant-garde and originally influenced by the likes of John Cage and Morton Feldman, Harold Budd rebelled against the heavily conceptual works of his peers to explore his own artistic path of existential prettiness. His early work caught the ear of Brian Eno, who invited him to England to record his first commercially released work The Pavilion Of Dreams (Obscure - 1978). This working relationship continued over the next decade, producing landmark works such as The Plateaux Of Mirror (EG - 1980) and The Pearl (EG - 1984). Anxiety's KissFounded by Louisville musician Ryan Patterson and including Kayhan Vaziri and Carter Wilson, power trio Coliseum have grown to become one of today's quintessential contemporary punk bands. "Anxiety's Kiss" is the new album from Coliseum, recorded at The Magpie Cage by producer/engineer J. Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines). "Anxiety's Kiss" is a hook-laden maturation of the Coliseum sound. Nods to their early D-Beat leanings are there, but it is their willingness to embrace Post-Punk melody and explore the space between notes that make "Anxiety's Kiss" so alluring. Confidently growing within the punk world, without ever leaving it behind.
"We Are The Water" kicks things off with a synth-driven stomp while lyrically serving as a poignant social awakening and call for human empathy. Amidst a tangle and twang of melody, "Course Correction" and "Wrong/Goodbye" then emerge to tackle the ripe subjects of class division and police brutality. "Drums & Amplifiers" picks up pace, taking on those who reflect on their punk past rather than absorb the spirit that still charges the air around us. It's not all social and subcultural commentary though. The dizzying "Dark Light Of Seduction" and sultry "Sharp Fangs, Pale Flesh" (where J. Robbins guests performing the BulBul Tarang) are darkly provocative narratives about the power of lust and love. In soul and tone, they both interject an emotional underbelly to it all. Robbins also adds bass on "Comedown", an industrial-tinged romp led by Vaziri's baritone guitar and Wilson's booming toms. Coincidentally, it is also the first Coliseum song ever recorded to not feature Patterson on guitar. "Sunlight in a Snowstorm" is the band at their most melodic, with a snow-covered New York City as its lyrical backdrop. The high beam lit, cinematic noir of "Driver at Dusk" and infectious, fuzzed-out "Escape Yr Skull" lastly descend to close out the album. Automatic (Awaiting Repress)Automatic is diverse, refreshing and full of welcomed surprises. The boundary pushing album is a wide mix of genres, including rock, country, reggae, R&B, dub, island and 1980s sounding pop.The album features sixteen tracks, which feels really long-especially in these days of four-track EPs and iTunes singles. Similar to 2010s Timebomb, the album features continued collaboration with alt-rocker Lincoln Parish of Cage The Elephant. Along with members of Iration and JP Hesser of Castaway 7 Studios, Parish acted as a the album's co-producer.
Automatic starts off with the album's title track, which is a tribute to the band's dedicated fan base. The reggae-rock-dub tune is signature Iration and features a catchy chorus, along with an arrangement full of smooth baselines, keys and vocal affects. For longtime fans and reggae lovers, Automatic offers "One Way Track," "Go That Road," "Uptown" and "Mr. Operator." The latter is a roots reggae and R&B tune with an infectious chorus and hypnotizing layers of keys. "Go That Road" is a fun, country-reggae tune with a upbeat, catchy chorus, aptly-timed harmonies and relatable story.
Some of the album's strongest songs feature collaborator and co-producer Lincoln Parish. "Show Me" is a synthesized, 1980s-sounding dance tune with tempo changes and layered, echo-filled vocals. "Home" starts off with a country picking pattern and dust-bowl feel. The track then transitions into a bass heavy reggae-rock tune, before finishing with a alt-rock interlude/outro. The track is overflowing with sounds, which regrettably swallow-up the vocals during the song's chorus.
Finally, "Milk and Honey" is a reggae-funk-dance tune with shades of funk-soul phenom Robert Randolph. These songs might surprise some listeners and catch others completely off guard; however, these radio friendly tunes are a refreshing change from the often recycled sounds of the genre. The songs are welcomed editions to the album, and should help Iration expand to audiences outside the reggae-rock genre.
Automatic is hard to categorize. It's not really a reggae album or a rock album. And, it's not a pop album or R&B either. It's all the above. Automatic is an album for all listening moods. If you want some reggae, you got it; if you want to dance, you got it. If you want upbeat pop, you got that as well. The beauty of Iration's "all of the above" approach is that it is unique and refreshing, as well as unpredictable-which makes Automatic accessible to new fans while keeping the old ones satisfied.

Artificial DanceThe story of electronic music pioneer K. Leimer continues with a focus on his auteurist studio project Savant. Compiling the standalone album, 1983's The Neo Realist (At Risk), with Savant's debut 12" and a grip of compilation and unreleased tracks, Artificial Dance documents Leimer's complete collaborative venture into the unpredictable realities of music, exploring the gulf between what is expected by its creators and what is eventually - and eternally - committed to tape. Savant was designed by Leimer to tap into entropic truths, asserting an uncaged counterpart to the loop-based minimalism he produced in isolation (recently surveyed on RVNG Intl.'s A Period of Review (1975-1983)). Aligning himself with the Cage-ean principles of chance operations and musical contingency, Savant was a band sans jam. Allegorically, a blindfolded collaboration whose happenstance source music Leimer would sample, loop and sculpt at will. Leimer was creatively autonomous to the point of being a persona absentia in Seattle's 80s rock scene. Unconcerned by social status, Leimer enlisted musicians from experimental and post-punk groups in the area to come record as Savant at his home studio, Tactical. Among them were ambient composer Marc Barreca, John Foster (founder of Op Magazine - the experimental music publication), Jim and David Keller of the New Flamingos, and their bandmate Alex Petit. Others, like Roy Finch and Dennis Rea, came from a similar orbit. Even with these musicians at his beck and call, Leimer implemented a disarming musical strategy. Savant would have no fixed line up and often musicians would be asked to play instruments far outside their fortÉ. Leimer would however give loose rhythmic direction for the musicians to develop spontaneously against click-tracks. When the performance locked in with Leimer listening at the controls, he'd capture it to tape. These moments became the soul of Savant and the combustive elements that would variegate its timbres. Savant tonally operates in a space between This Heat's dark primitivism and the found sound collage of Brian Eno & David Byrne's My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. These analogies are simply stylistic, as the narrative behind The Neo-Realist's production makes clear Leimer was concocting via more alchemic means, avoiding genre aspirations by looking for accidental moments of musical intrigue and discovery. Leimer explains this process in the collection's liner notes: "I was looking for flaws, for faults to act as the stand-out features of the music." Far from a provisional stab at avant-garde sensibilities, Savant represents Leimer's repudiation of ambient music's passive side. Artificial Dance embodies a perfectionist's family portrait of outrÉ musicians conforming to Leimer's nonconformist musical ethos. Bear CreekBear Creek is the newest release from singer/songwriter/guitarist Brandi Carlile who has been hailed as "the best voice in indie rock" by Paste Magazine. The lead track "That Wasn't Me," is a soulful piano-based song that showcases the warmth and subtle power of Carlile's vocals. It is the cornerstone of an earthy collection that embraces all of her musical influences: folk, pop, country, rock, gospel and blues. The album was named after the studio where most of the album was recorded, Bear Creek Studios, a converted early 20th century barn near Carlile's hometown of Seattle, WA.
The 13-song set features contributions from her longtime band mates: Tim and Phil Hanseroth ("The Twins," who co-wrote many of the songs with Carlile and play guitar and bass respectively), drummer/percussionist Allison Miller and cellist Josh Neumann plus Dave Palmer on keyboards and Jeb Bows on violin and mandolin. Drummer Matt Chamberlain guests on several tracks. Grammy winning engineer/producer/mixer Trina Shoemaker (Sheryl Crow, Emmylou Harris, Queens of the Stone Age) and Brandi and The Twins produced the Bear Creek Studios sessions. Frank Liddell (Miranda Lambert, Lee Ann Womack) and Jay Joyce (Cage the Elephant, Emmylou Harris) produced three tracks at Tragedy/Tragedy Studios in Nashville, TN.
Bear Creek follows Carlile's 2011 live album, Live at Benaroya Hall with the Seattle Symphony, which the Seattle Times called "breathtaking." It was recorded during the band's sold-out two-night stand at the prestigious venue in November of 2010. To date, Carlile has sold over 800,000 albums and has played over 700 live shows.LP1
