    Got Soul

Pedal-steel virtuoso Robert Randolph returns with his new album, Got Soul. The album reaffirms that Randolph and his Family Band have truly evolved into one of the most exciting and innovative outfits in contemporary music. Got Soul takes stock of Randolph's past as a church musician as it pushes the band forward into new places. There is no shortage of originality on the album with songs that run the gamut from gospel numbers to deep, funky grooves to incendiary rock-and-soul jams. The hauntingly exquisite Heaven's Calling features Randolph on solo steel while guest vocalists Darius Rucker and Anthony Hamilton lend their golden voices to Love Do What It Do and She Got Soul respectively. I Thank You, the 60s Sam & Dave R&B smash, is completely re-imagined in the hands of the Family Band and Snarky Puppy's very on Cory Henry.

    Skeleton Soul

Jack Sandham and Wednesday Lyle have been playing together as Cowbell since late 2009 when they got together for a late night jam session and things took off from there. Three 7" singles followed over the next 18 months and they signed to Damaged Goods in 2012. Two years on from their debut album Beat Stampede, the rockin' duo branch out into a more spooky atmospheric sound across the 11 tracks on the new album. There's a definite dark, New Orleans R&B vibe to Skeleton Soul.

Kicking off with the spaghetti western intro of the album's opening track, 'Cry Wolf' the duo cover plenty of new ground while retaining the urgency and excitement of their earlier work. Though what makes this new album so special is the evocative mood the band created with Ed Deegan at Gizzard Studio. Imagine Dr. John meets the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. The sound is still a stripped down affair, though this time round the drum 'n' guitar bones are fleshed out with a few enhancing overdubs such as the Doors-esque spiky psychedelic organ on 'She's All Over You', and some soulful saxophone on the funky, strutting 'Dirt'.

The band show they're equally adept at intimate ballads with 'Darkness In Your Heart', perhaps the best song Richard Hawley never wrote. Wednesday takes the lead vocal on 'Heart On The Line' a track which recalls the cream of '60s girl singers such as Sandie, Dusty et al. Fans of the group's earlier sound will not be disappointed either, there's still the bone-shaking garage blues numbers such as 'Oh Yolande' and 'Baby It's Your Love' along with the swampy mambo-blues groove of 'The Fear'. Imagine a band with the guitar twang of The Cramps over jungle-tribal drums, covering The Zombies and you're somewhere close.

Only 2500 Numbered Limited Edition Copies Worldwide

Originally released in 1967, Silk & Soul was nominated for a Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 1968 for the song You'll Go To Hell. Aretha Franklin won the award over Simone.

Besides the Grammy nominated tune, the album includes Simone's version of Bacharach's The Look of Love which was written for the 1967 movie Casino Royale.

After moving from the blues to soul for her second RCA album, Nina Simone's extroverted, confident delivery proved a natural match with the ranks of soul shouters working the crowds during the late '60s. ... the less familiar tunes, like the highlight It Be's That Way Sometimes (written by Simone's brother Sam Waymon), Go to Hell, and I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free, a trio of songs Nina Simone has no trouble making her own. - John Bush, allmusic.com

    Eccentric Soul: The Young Disciples

Though there are currently dozens of small labels dedicated to unearthing and reissuing forgotten soul recordings from the `60s and `70s, few of them can compete with Chicago's Numero label, whose ECCENTRIC SOUL releases serve not just as fine collections of rare soul, but as miniature history lessons that throw light on forgotten corners of the American experience. Where previous ECCENTRIC SOUL volumes have documented the vibrant independent soul scenes that flourished in Miami, Chicago, and Detroit, THE YOUNG DISCIPLES album collects the output of St Louis' Merry and Gateway labels. The Young Disciples band accompanies talented and heretofore unknown young singers like LaVel Moore and Dauphin Jackson on a series of sides ranging from hard driving southern funk to impassioned torch songs.

    Eccentric Soul: Mighty Mike Lenaburg

Eccentric Soul: Mighty Mike Lenaburg chronicles Phoenix, Arizona's off- Funky Broadway scene that happened while Dyke and his Blazers were setting national charts on fire in the late '60s/early '70s. Covering Tejano psych, flute funk, both horny soul and horny kid soul, cackling R&B, deep ballads, and fist-fight doowop, Lenaburg channeled that wrong side of the desert sound to a dozen 45s for the Mighty, Darlene, Homogenized Sound, Ramco and Out of Sight imprints.

Although listing these totally obscure groups is an exercise in futility, Numero has anyway; Michael Liggins, the Super Souls, We The People, Ronnie Whitehead, Small Paul, the Soulsations, Lon Rogers, the Soul Blenders, Sheila Jack, Clarence Townes and the Newlyweds.

Five years since Numero's initial CD release, Eccentric Soul: Mighty Mike Lenaburg finally makes it back to its intended format as a deluxe double LP. This 180g Loaded To The Gills edition features 10 bonus tracks, scores of new photographs and new liner notes, all housed in a heavy gatefold jacket.

Eccentric Soul: The Way Out Label

Fueled by the financial drippings of number runners
and boosted by Hall-of-Fame running back Jim Brown,
Cleveland, Ohio's Way Out Records offered asylum for a
rising crop of rogue soul men, rust-belt vocal ensembles,
and trial-by-fire producers. Helmed by a friendly
consortium of hustlers, police officers, and gridiron
giants, pet project beget obsession as Motown arrangers,
gospel choirs, and the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra
were all beckoned to the wrong side of the tracks to mint
masterpieces for the Sensations, Volcanic Eruption, the
Exceptional Three, and Bobby Wade, all beneath the
mindful gaze of a wall-mounted shotgun. Reaching their
peak in the late '60s, Eccentric Soul: The Way Out Label
gathers the brightest moments from the quirky operation's
    eleven year bid.

The 3LP configuration boasts a double gatefold with
beautiful photos and ephemera from the label's low-flying
promotional department. For fans of group harmony,
sweet soul, orchestral feats and lo-fi oddities, The Way Out
Label is an excellent addition to our already popular and
    powerful Eccentric Soul series.

Saravah Soul Cultura Impura On 2 x Vinyl LP + CD

Cultura Impura is the second album from the half Brazilian, half British, London based purveyors of Afro-meets-Brazilian funk, Saravah Soul. This vibrant record sees the band channelling '60s Brazil via 21st Century East London. Cultura Impura is built on digging: hunting through old West African recordings from the 60s and 70s, sifting through Brazilian folklore and delving into Afro-Brazilian religious music, along with a deep love for 60s funk and Afro-beat. And lots of gigging: constantly touring their intensely vibrant live show, from festival to festival and across continents.

    The Headphone Masterpiece

Cody Chesnut's debut album, The Headphone Masterpiece, is what all pop/rock/soul/R&B/hip-hop hybrids should be: good, raw, fun, and funky. Chesnutt mixes '60s-style rock with '70s soul and '90s hip-hop and R&B in an eclectic celebration of sound. This lo-fi gem was recorded in his bedroom and sounds like it; it's essentially a 36-track musical diary. He sings testosterone-driven songs of passion and tender tales of mental anguish with equal abandon. He plays almost all of the instruments and sings most of the vocals, and he's often out of tune and off-key, but that only adds to the pure emotion and recklessness of the album.

Thanks to today's respect and care given to his music by a whole new generation of musicians and fans, King Curtis forever reigns as one of soul's pioneers. Much like Ray Charles, Otis Redding, and other superstars before him, Curtis Owsley (King Curtis) had the necessary ingredients of stellar musicianship and songwriting acumen which successfully reached across all gospel, soul, rock and pop genres.

King Curtis created some of his greatest sides ever for ATCO Records, where he spent his time on earth creating some of the most masterful and funkiest soul music ever waxed. In 1968, he was honored with his first greatest hits collection simply titled "The Best of King Curtis." This stunning array of his most memorable hit singles and stellar album staples continues to illustrate how important a force he was then and still is today, over four decades since!

"The Best of King Curtis" features a heavy menu of his finest moments like the funk infused "Harper Valley P.T.A." and Stevie Wonder's "I Was Made To Love Her", the definitive balladry of Ben E. King's "Spanish Harlem", and of course his chart toppers "Ode To Billie Joe" "Soul Serenade" and a definitive tribute to his friend Otis Redding with "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay" which truly opened up a worldwide audience to this sorely missed genius.

This 1968 Greatest Hits LP hasn't been available on vinyl for many decades... that is until now! Friday Music is very proud to announce for the first time ever the stunning 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl release of The Best Of King Curtis. Comet Gain is a beloved British indie rock band, formed in 1993. Over five full-lengths and twenty or so 7-inches, their music has evolved into a culmination of sounds that range from Northern soul, the riot grrrl movement, and 60s girl groups. They're often considered contemporaries to the likes of Huggy Bear, The Clean, Bikini Kill, Heavenly, Television Personalities, and The Pastels, and they've been cited as a major influence on the rising jangly underground featuring Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Crystal Stilts, and caUSE co-MOTION! This release is a collection of Comet Gain's lost, hidden, and cherished singles, unreleased songs, and their historic John Peel session.

The Best Of Sam And Dave (Awaiting Repress)

Friday Music is proud to offer the original Atlantic Records masterpiece The Best Of Sam & Dave for the first time on 180g audiophile vinyl. Mastered impeccably from the original Atlantic Records tapes by Joe Reagoso at Friday Music Studios and at Capitol Mastering with Ron McMaster.

Sam Porter and Dave Prater were responsible for some of the finest soul music ever recorded back in the '60s. With an arsenal of the finest musicians like Booker T. & The M.G.'s, plus producers and writers like Issac Hayes at their call, Sam & Dave released a treasure trove of funk, soul and rock masterpieces, which have gone on to become some of the greatest sides ever waxed in modern soul history!

With chart topping soul rockers like Hold On, I'm Comin', I Take What I Want, I Thank You and their all time trademark song Soul Man, the good folks at Atlantic honored this famed duo with their own greatest hits album, the magnificent The Best Of Sam & Dave in 1969. This original album has been out of print for many years and for several decades in the vinyl format, that is until now!

This best of album features all of their original hit recordings mentioned above, as well as more killer funk from the pens and production wizardry of Issac Hayes and David Porter like May I Baby, Wrap It Up, You Got Me Hummin and the all time soul ballad classic When Something Is Wrong With My Baby. Also included here is the original rare album cover artwork featuring the live concert photo by Walter Loos and the excellent packaging design of the legendary Stanislaw Zagorski.

    Algiers

"This is revolutionary music in the truest sense of
the word. It demands action. It requires penance. It
    destroys expectations." - Stereogum

"The Death Grips of gospel torching the South's
    dark underbelly." - Rolling Stone

The debut LP by Algiers is haunted by promises of the past:
the rapturous call and response of millenarian gospel, the
bellowing urgency of 60s protest soul, the scene-searching
intensity of DC hardcore and the smeared viscosity of
post-punk and no wave. After all, as Marx once said: "The
tradition of all dead generations weighs like a nightmare
on the brains of the living." But rather than revel in a state
of nostalgia, the band wields these burdened visions to
    charge headlong into the future.

Over the album's eleven tracks, these three ÉmigrÉs of
the American Deep South lay waste to appropriators,
oppressors, revivalists and the cultural shock troops of
capitalism. Vocalist Franklin James Fisher's every shriek and
incantation will take you from the sweaty fervor of Dennis
Edwards-era Temptations through the righteous rebellion
of Nina Simone to the solitary midnight howls of PJ Harvey.
Shards of Lee Tesche's guitar, along with Ryan Mahan's
bass pulses and synthesizer slashes, pierce through the
    processional, transforming neo-modernist hymns with
explosions of foreboding and dread that evoke the
vanguard of pop experimentation from Suicide to Roland
    S. Howard.

In an era when political subjectivity and human connectivity
have been smashed to pieces by the demands of finance
capital, Algiers has taken its stance: to maintain fidelity to
these subversive spirits and trudge toward the light. While
they may never arrive at their destination - consigned to a
life of wandering - they conjure the dead sound to life in
    frightening new directions.

    The Sirens Of The Ditch

For the past six years, Jason Isbell was one of three frontmen for the critically acclaimed Drive-By Truckers and although fans may have been shocked by his departure from the band in April of 2011, once you hear this, his solo debut Sirens Of The Ditch (which was co-produced by Isbell and Patterson Hood) it will only confirm that Isbell by no means is putting his feet up. Musicians joining Isbell on the album include Shonna Tucker (bass) and Brad Morgan (drums) with cameos from Patterson Hood, his father David Hood, Spooner Oldham, John Neff and more.

Recorded over the past four years at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals (Aretha Franklin, Duane Allman, Otis Redding), Sirens Of The Ditch is a diverse collection of songs that incorporates elements of rock, blues and soul music into a heartfelt mix of songs that favor piano and pedal steel over buzzing guitars, although theres a fair share of overdriven amps here as well. A lot of old soul musicians came through here in the late 60s and 70s and helped define the Muscle Shoals sound, the lifelong Alabamian explains, so that influence was always in my environment, but on this record I really tried to capture that.

    Stone Rollin'

Stone Rollin' is the fifth studio album from Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter and record producer Raphael Saadiq. Known for defying the confines of working within one genre, this standard bearer for old school R&B returns with a new release that celebrates the classic sounds of 60s and 70s soul with a futuristic twist.

Featuring ten new tracks, Stone Rollin is the follow up to Saadiqs 2008 solo album The Way I See It, which boasted four Billboard R&B chart singles and was nominated for three Grammy Awards including Best R&B Album. Recorded at his studio complex the Blakeslee Recording Company in Los Angeles, Raphael Saadiq played bass, mellotron, keys, guitar, percussion and even drums on most of the tracks.

Opening with the stomping Heart Attack, the albums other standout cuts include the stunning Go To Hell, featuring his studio squad of musicians who are melodically complimented by an angelic choir, the evocative Dixieland number Day Dreams, featuring Robert Randolph who plays steel guitar on the track, and Just Dont, which includes a guest appearance from one of Saadiqs indie rock favorites Swedish-Japanese singer Yukimi Nagano (Little Dragon). Also making an appearance on that same song is one of Saadiqs idols Larry Dunn (Earth, Wind and Fire), who plays piano and contributes an epic Moog solo.

    The Birth Of Funk

Nobody in New Orleans laid into the blues so low down and dirty as Buddy Bol-den, whose Funky Butt became a staple in the repertoire of the city's early jazz bands. Jacksonville, Florida, 1960. Charles 'Hungry' Williams mentors young Clayton Fillyau after he had just joined the James Brown band: 'I don't care where you put it on those drums, remember where '1' is and you'll never lose the time.' Listen to Hungry on Huey Smith's Talk To Me Baby and then listen to how Clayton turns it into a relentless breakbeat on James Brown's I've Got Money. Earl King's Trick Bag, prefiguring the Meters, is as good an example of early New Orleansfunk as can be found. Not everything on here was cut in New Orleans. New York singer Vernon Harrel's Slick Chick is held together by an intriguingly syncopated bass line that hints at late '60s Studio One dub. And in case you think any of this was new, listen to Zutty Singleton's drum break on Victoria Spivey's Funny Feathers from 1929. Or Earl Palmer's sixteenth notes, off-backbeat snare accents and double-tempo hi-hats in 1953 on Professor Longhair's Tipitina and Who's Foolin' You.

These are musicians that strove to achieve the success of The Meters and James Brown, musicians that played their instruments with a gut-wrenching power unheard in modern music, musicians that testified on wax and have resurfaced some thirty years after disappearing from the music scene. The intensity of their recordings has not lost one ounce of soul with the time passed. Now, finally, the meticulously researched The Funky 16 Corners stands as an historical document to this era in American music.

    King Of The Beach

King of the Beach, the new Wavves album is an adventurous and ambitious record. It cuts deeper into the bleeding throat catharsis and 60s sunshine soul that Wavves is known for. It also unexpectedly flips out with elements of primitive electronics and psychedelic studio experimentation. Unlike Wavves previously released material, recorded in haphazard bursts on Williams laptop, King of the Beach was toiled over for three months at Sweet Tea Recording, a world-renowned studio in Oxford, Mississippi. Sweet Tea is also the home of Dennis Herring, producer of the last two Modest Mouse albums, and the man who dismantled and re-assembled the sound on this record.
