    Sound City: Real To Reel

Limited Collector's Edition 180 Gram Vinyl

All-New Original Album of Music Created Exclusively for the Documentary

Deep in the San Fernando Valley, behind the train tracks and amidst dilapidated warehouses, was rock n' roll's best kept secret. Sound City, America's greatest unsung recording studio, housed a legendary, one-of-a-kind recording console, and became the birth place to the seminal albums that defined 20th century music. Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Rick Springfield, Tom Petty, Nirvana, amongst many others, all put magic to tape within these walls. It was rock n' roll hallowed ground. Directed by Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) and featuring interviews and performances by the iconic musicians who made their careers in the studio, Sound City tells the story of real rock n' roll history, and celebrates the human element of music, as Grohl gathers some of rock's greatest artists to collaborate on a new album. Using Sound City's legendary analog console, together they continue to create musical miracles in a digital world.

Sound City - Real To Real, the companion album to the documentary is released on Roswell
Records, in conjunction with the film's DVD and Blu-Ray releases. A brand new collection of all-new all-original songs, each song featured on the album was composed and recorded exclusively for the film within its own 24-hour session. The new tracks - featuring an amazing and idiosyncratic cast of collaborators including Paul McCartney, Grohl's former Nirvana and current Foo Fighters bandmates, Stevie Nicks, Rick Springfield, Trent Reznor, Joshua Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick, Lee Ving of Fear, Corey Taylor of Slipknot, Brad Wilk and Tim Commerford of Rage Against The Machine and more--passionately exemplify Sound City's celebration of the human element of musicianship and recording in an increasingly digital world.

    2. Time Slowing Down - Chris Goss, Tim Commerford, Dave Grohl, Brad Wilk

    Heartbeat City

Four-Times-Platinum Heartbeat City Survives as the Cars' Final Great Album Before Break-Up

Mastered from the Original Master Tapes: Mobile Fidelity LP Presents the 1984 Mutt Lange-Produced Heartbeat City In Extraordinary Sound

Loaded With Recognizable Hits: "Drive," "You Might Think," "Magic," "Hello Again," and "Why Can't I Have You" All Top 40 Singles

1984 will always be remembered for the debut of the Macintosh computer, the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, and the ascent of MTV as the most powerful cultural medium of the era. The year is also recognized for the Cars' savvy contributions not only to the burgeoning music-video channel but to pop itself. Released in April, the four-times platinum Heartbeat City ultimately spawned five Top 40 singles-four of them landing in the Top 20, two in the Top 10-and serve as the final memorable record from the Boston group, which disbanded in 1987.

Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's numbered limited edition 180g LP of Heartbeat City revisits the landmark album via a rich fidelity unmatched by any prior edition. Signifying the first time the set has been available on vinyl in nearly three decades, this reissue opens up the soundstages, decongests the low frequencies, and shines a spotlight on Mutt Lange's pinpoint balances and glossy hooks. Indeed, the now-household-name producer would make a lasting mark with Heartbeat City, whose radio-friendly sound, multi-layered textures, and smooth, suave, synth-heavy pulses set a precedent for the period's hit-making pop.

Overflowing with a surfeit of finger-snapping beats, electro-pop effects, streamlined guitar notes, and bright melodies, Heartbeat City trades in efficiency, catchiness, and to-the-point craftiness. Unlike most mid-80s records, the electronic effects and sleek tonalities aren't dated due to both the focused production and irresistible songwriting. Leader Ric Ocasek penned all ten tunes, and while a mind-boggling five charted in the Top 40, what makes Heartbeat City such a staple is the fact that it's easy to imagine every song on it crashing the Billboard Hot 100. Call it the new-wave version of Thriller.

Indeed, the record's track list automatically triggers a mental jukebox. The spare simplicity and hopefulness of "Magic." The simultaneously sad longing and soothing somberness of the Benjamin Orr-sung "Drive." The shimmer and shuffling riff of "You Might Think." The ping-pong bounce and futuristic paranoia of "Hello Again." The atmospheric, arty title track. Heartbeat City is a veritable lesson in pop tunesmithship.

    Neptune City

    180 Gram Vinyl

Prior to the release of Neptune City (2007), Nicole Atkins found herself at a bar in Neptune City, New Jersey called Bilow's, thinking about what she would title her next album. She pondered aloud naming the album Neptune City, almost as a counterbalance to Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J., with encouragement from the bar's patrons. And I figured Neptune City, too, it seems so ominous, she told the Village Voice. It sounds like very, you know, aquatic and mysterious.

Neptune City was generally well received by most music critics. Atkins shows on this album that she has both the capability and potential. The lush arrangements on Neptune City showcase the depth, range, and versatility of Atkins' alto voice, not to mention her songwriting prowess. Something akin to country, but also something post-modern, this is heartbreak nearly at its finest - and most cosmopolitan.

The album reached No. 6 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart.

    Abandoned City

"It's a joy to listen to, and one of the
    brightest, most invigorating records
I've heard all year." - Pitchfork

"It's as infectious and disarming as it
    is genre-defying." - Mojo

Hauschka is a composer, songwriter and experimental musician who
has brought an exciting new perspective to the prepared piano - a
technique for getting new sounds from the acoustic keyboard by
resting pieces of paper or drumsticks on the strings of the instrument.

Abandoned City was recorded in Hauschka's home studio in a burst
of creative energy following the birth of his first son. The songs were
recorded using nine microphones. Six recorded the sounds coming
from the piano strings through an analogue console feeding directly
into a computer to preserve the instrument's full, warm sound. Three
others passed the tones through a mixer full of effects - delay,
distortion, echo - that can be triggered separately or used
simultaneously. Hauschka creates the music and the arrangements
as he goes, trusting the music to take him in the proper direction.
"Most of the songs were played on one piano; I was mixing as I
played. If I needed more piano, I overdubbed with another twiddling of
effects. All the sounds - harp, balafon, Melodica, drums - are
produced by the keyboard," Hauschka explains. The compositions on
Abandoned City awaken the loneliness and unattainable romance of
timeless, unfamiliar places, with cinematic melodies full of resonant
overtones, bright cheerful keyboard patterns and dark percussive
touches. The tracks all bear the names of actual vacant cities.

Hauschka chose Abandoned City as the title of the album to convey
the sense of hope and sadness that consumes him when he's sitting
alone at the keyboard. "I was interested in finding a metaphor for the
inner tension I feel when I'm composing music, a state of mind where
I'm lonely and happy at the same time," Hauschka professes. "When I
saw photos of abandoned cities, I felt it was perfect. People once lived
there, but they left in a rush and now nature has taken over in a
beautiful way, things are growing up from the sidewalk and the
seasons are changing colors. The music is dark, but in a quiet,
uplifting way. The piano is singing the melody but, because of the
effects, you can't hear it directly. It's like the sound of a choir under the
earth, something you feel without realizing it."

City Life, arguably The Blackbyrds' best album, hit #1 on the Billboard Jazz Chart and #3 on the Billboard Soul Chart upon its original release in 1975.
Produced by legendary jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd, the album showcases The Blackbyrd's' unique jazz-funk crossover sound and includes the runaway
hits Happy Music and Rock Creek Park, which stand even today as pinnacles of the '70s jazz-funk movement. A testament to its lasting appeal, Rock
Creek Park from the City Life album has been sampled numerous times by groups such as De La Soul, Eric B. & Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, N.W.A,
Massive Attack, Ice Cube, Heavy D, Nas and Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, Tone Loc and most recently, Wiz Khalifa. This often-sublime album
is primed for rediscovery by fans of '70s funk, soul, jazz and fusion.

    Bump City

Bump City is the second album by the long living Bay Area based Soul Funk group Tower Of Power, released in 1972. Tower Of Power are best known for their funky Soul sound highlighted by a powerful horn section and precisely syncopated bass-guitar lines.

One of their biggest hits came off the album: You're Still A Young Man, recorded in Memphis and with Rick Stevens as lead vocalist. The production and arrangements were much improved over the debut album East Bay Grease from 1970, as was the engineering and overall technical quality. Their lines were crisper, the unison and ensemble passages much sharper, and they were beginning to round into shape.

The album was the first to make an impact in the band's early days, and paved the way to their mid Seventies success with subsequent albums like their self titled third album and Back To Oakland from 1974, both of which feature Lenny Williams on lead vocals.

    Radio City

Ranked 403/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Although the original members of the Memphis quartet Big Star recorded only the album, #1 Record together and were dissolving rapidly by the time the second, Radio City, was completed, those records have influenced countless 80s and 90s rockers on both sides of the Atlantic, from the Replacements and R.E.M. to Englands Primal Scream and Scotlands Teenage Fanclub. That Big Stars impact should extend so far afield is less surprising in light of the bands own inspirations. Taking the gritty soul of Memphis rhythm and blues and fusing it with the artful melodies and vocal harmonies of British power pop, and injecting it all with a flailing, pre-punk, garage-band energy, Big Star created a unique sound with a universal appeal.

Much of the tension that fueled Big Star's wonderful harmonies apparently came from the undercurrents of competition instilled by the medias perception of Alex Chilton as the leader of the band, one which Chris Bell once steered. Near Christmas of 1972, Bell left the band. Chilton, Hummel and Stephens continued as a trio, but Big Star was clearly on the rocks. They pulled themselves together enough, however, to record 1973's Radio City, which has been called one of rocks most seminal albums, and while Bell was not a formal participant, his lingering spirit is evident in several of the albums 12 tracks.

    Mic City Sons

The third and final album by Heatmiser, a band led by Elliott Smith and Hampshire College buddy Neil Gust, released in 1996 on Caroline Records, is hailed by all as their best effort. Unfortunately, the record was released as the band was breaking up.

The duo of Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf, that worked on both Elliott Smith solo albums for DreamWorks (XO and Figure 8), helped produce and record Mic City Sons. A true indie-rock classic that still sounds good today: if you are a fan of Elliott Smith you need this one as well. Here on 180 gram vinyl.

    Television City Dream

As the quintessential band of the pop-punk genre, Screeching Weasel posses a sound and style as recognizable as that of the Ramones, Sex Pistols, or even The Clash. In looking over their venerable catalog, Ben Weasel (singer/songwriter/guitarist) realized that the sound and appearance of one release in particular, Television City Dream, didn't quite measure up to the standard set by all the others.

Due to this fact, Ben decided to revisit Television City Dream and create the album the band had originally envisioned. Of course amending the sound of the album was the first and paramount task. Justin Perkins (bassist) accomplished this by completely remixing and remastering all the songs from the original recordings, including five songs from the session that didn't appear on the initial release. In addition, the band resequenced the whole album to accomodate the five newly included tracks and to lend an entirely new feel to it.

Finally, the original artwork was scrapped and replaced with brand new art much more befitting of what Screeching Weasel is known for. With vastly improved sound quality, additional songs and a whole new look, this incarnation of Television City Dream is essentially a new album altogether.

Classic Album From Scottish Hard Rockers Nazareth Re-Issued On Vinyl!!!

This 1978 album found Nazareth continuing to mine the combination of stripped-down hard rock and roots rock sounds explored on 1977's Expect No Mercy. No Mean City is also notable because the veteran Scottish rock outfit expanded its lineup for the first time with addition of guitarist Zal Cleminson, formerly of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band. He helped the band create a gutsy twin-guitar attack that stamps its authority all over the album: prime example of the group's new firepower include Just to Get Into It, a blinding speed rocker that provides the album with a fitting opener, and Simple Solution, a hard-driving slab of boogie rock that sets cynical lyrics against the backdrop of a gritty, hypnotic guitar riff. Another major highlight is May the Sunshine, which starts as a Celtic-inflected acoustic tune, but soon adds electric guitars and rumbling bassline to become a stomping folk metal tune in the style of Led Zeppelin. However, the album's secret gem is Star, a power ballad about a love affair broken up by the music biz that is driven by a sweetly harmonized guitar riff almost as heart-tugging as the song's lyrics.

A rare musical maturity weaving live instrumentation into an electronic sound world- Quietus

Crystallized melodic sparkle and rhythms running from Actress-like flights to low-slung bomp Boomkat

What Circle Traps do may not be dance music, but their subtlety of touch and the adeptness of sound design is sure to win
them fans from that quarter, as well as many others Inverted Audio

Created in an industrial workplace in Leyton, where Canary Wharf punctures the skyline, Circle Traps craft music made
in the image of the modern city. The group consists of Jack Wyllie, Duncan Bellamy and Will Ward and was formed in
East London in 2010 and quickly scored their first release on fellow East Londoner Subeena's Opit Records in early 2011.
Their eponymous debut EP earned serious critical praise from the likes of The Wire, Quietus and Fact Magazine. Their
attention to ambient textures is reminiscent of Actress and Daniel Lopatin, but their unique, multi-layered, crystalline
vision is consistently offset by dance floor impulses that nod to Detroit through the likes of Model 500 and Derrick May.
The Machine City EP is a lush amalgamation of textural, distorted melody and bassier dance floor leanings.

    The Magic City

On the original 1965 The Magic City LP, issued on Saturn, the monster 27-1/2 minute title track sprawled across side A. Ra customarily supervised the Arkestra's improvisational process via keyboard cues or hand signals. He was always in charge-hence critic Simon Adams describing the title track as 27 minutes of controled freedom. The Magic City was never performed in concert; saxophonist John Gilmore said it was unreproducible, a tapestry of sound. Although shorter in scope than side A's magnum opus, the four works on The Magic City's flip side reflect the same improvisational approach, spatiality, and lack of structure. One session outtake, Other Worlds, an alternate version of Shadow World, is included as a bonus track on side B.

For this definitive edition, historical and technical liner notes are provided by noted jazz historian Ben Young, who restored and remastered the album with his Triple Point Records partner Joe Lizzi. Both men have been recognized for their extensive work on the Grammy Nominated Albert Ayler boxset, released on John Fahey's Revenant records in 2005.

First-generation Saturn pressings of The Magic City were monophonic. A full stereo version had been issued on Sun Ra's Thoth subsidiary label sometime after 1969; however, it suffered from a technical flaw that prevented many copies of the LP from tracking cleanly through the first cut on side B. A 1973 gatefold LP reissue on Impulse featured reprocessed stereo. For this definitive reissue, Cosmic Myth Records used stereo sources which are superior to the Thoth pressing.

Cosmic Myth Records issues recordings under license from Sun Ra LLC, comprised of the heirs and rights holders of Sun Ra's music. The series is being co-produced and supervised by Irwin Chusid (Raymond Scott, Esquivel, Langley School Music Project) and Michael D. Anderson, who maintains the Sun Ra Music Archive, the world's foremost collection of original Ra session masters.

    City Of Refuge

In her relatively short musical career, Abigail Washburn has covered a lot of ground; both physically and metaphorically. Bouncing between China and Appalachia has informed much of her musical output and influenced a body of work that goes far beyond the usual claw hammer banjo repertoire.

Her Rounder debut, City of Refuge is a sublime marriage of old-time and indie-pop. On the album Washburn pairs venerable folk elements with far-flung sounds, and the results feel both strangely familiar and unlike anything anybody's ever heard before. The album features My Morning Jacket's Car Broemel, The Decemberists' Chris Funk, Turtle Island Quartet's Jeremy Kittell, atmospheric jazz guitarist Bill Frisell, veteran Nashville studio percussionist Kenny Malone, Old Crow Medicine Show's Ketch Secor and Morgan Jahnig, Wu Fei, master of the guzheng, and the Mongolian stringband Hanggai, who managed to contribute ambient throat-singing from halfway around the world.

The album was produced by Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Tift Merritt, Mudhoney) and features the talents of multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter, Kai Welch (Tommy and the Whale). City of Refuge offers an expansive palette of supple and modern textures resulting in a remarkably harmonious piece of art.

    Modern Vampires Of The City

Modern Vampires of the City is Vampire Weekend's third album, and it will be released on May 7th, 2013. The album is a bustling world of voices and visions - from the death of Henry Hudson to the Orthodox girl falling in love at an uptown falafel shop, from Hannah Hunt tearing up the New York
Times on a distant beach to the lethal chandelier of "Everlasting Arms", from the ardent yearning of "Don't Lie" to the harmonized voice of hope in "Young Lion".

For this album, Rostam Batmanglij and Ezra Koenig traveled to LA to collaborate with Rostam's longtime friend, and fellow producer, Ariel Rechtshaid. They brought with them writing and recording sessions from New York and Martha's Vineyard and began to stride towards realizing the finished album and were later joined by drummer Chris Tomson and bassist Chris Baio. Drums and bass were recorded to analog tape at Vox Studios. Built in the 1930's, it's one
of the oldest privately owned studios in Los Angeles. Those parts were then reintegrated with the sessions and further manipulated to create a synthesis of sound and tone, both old and new. Modern Vampires of the City has a grandeur and romanticism evocative of the city where it was conceived.

    Freetown Sound

Dev Hynes (Blood Orange) is set to release Freetown Sound, his third proper full-length album, and the
most expansive statement of his career. Written and produced by Hynes, Freetown Sound is a tour de
force, a pastiche of Hynes' past, present, and future that melds his influences with his own established
    musical voice.

For well over a decade, DevontÉ Hynes has proven himself a virtuoso of versatility, experimenting with
almost every conceivable musical genre under a variety of monikers. After moving to New York City in
the mid-2000s, Hynes became Blood Orange, plumming the oeuvres of the city's musical legends to
create a singular style of urgent, delicate pop music. Freetown Sound, which follows 2011's Coastal
Grooves and 2013's breakthrough Cupid Deluxe, builds upon everything Hynes has done as an artist,
resulting in the most expansive artistic statement of his career.

Drawing from a deep well of techniques
and references, the album unspools like a piece of theater, evoking unexpected communions of moods,
voices, and eras. Freetown Sound derives its name from the birthplace of Hynes' father, the capital of
Sierra Leone. Thematically, it is profoundly personal and unapologetically political, touching on issues of
race, religion, sex, and sexism over 17 shimmering songs. Each song echoes into another, with leitmotifs
carefully stitched throughout, yielding a sound palette that gently recalls elastic funk, slinky R&B, and
pure pop, but resisting easy categorization.

For Hynes, the process of self-discovery involved in creating Freetown Sound proved as valuable as the
finished product. "This record really tries to say things that I've been wanting to express for many years,"
he says. "It looks into my childhood and examines who I am at this point in my life. There are so many
crazy layers to it that it's actually quite hard to talk about it, but the record is very reflective of how my
brain works. It's been very interesting for me trying to understand and tie all of these things together. It's
been a way of working through it."

Kansas City Suite: The Music Of Benny Carter (Pure Pleasure)

A session from 1960 with Basie and his Orchestra on absolute top form. It's hardly surprising when you see the line up of star players and also the fact that every single selection was written by Benny Carter.

The Kansas City that Count Basie found himself in had become the hard core of vital new jazz. It was a place where the musicians who expressed this new jazz could, from night through morning, and on again the next night, sit in on numerous jam sessions. It was a place where musicians like Walter Page, Benny Moten, Lester Young, Ben Webster, Andy Kirk, Coleman Hawkins and many more, could be found working, experimenting and living their music. This was Count Basie's Kansas City, and this is the Kansas City that Benny Carter has dedicated this music to. He has written an original modern jazz suite that is flavored with the elements of Kansas City stomp jazz, and tailored for the big brash sound of the Basie band of today. To Benny Carter, the different streets and places in Kansas City, where so many of these jazz greats lived and worked, and where so much of jazz history was written, evokes a mood, a rememberance of things past. He has, for this reason, titled the selections of this suite after these very same streets and places. The Kansas City of the '20s and 30s is now a legend, and the music that saw it's beginnings there has since developed and moved into the mainstream of today's jazz. It has reached its full maturity and greatness in the music of Benny Carter, and through the dynamic force of the great Basie band!

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Sound Of Revolution

Warzone was a hardcore punk band from New York City. Anti-racist skinhead frontman Raymond "Raybeez" Barbieri was the group's only consistent member between its formation on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in 1982 until Barbieri's untimely death due to pneumonia on September 11, 1997. A U.S. Navy veteran, he was receiving treatment that many fans and friends have claimed was shamefully inadequate in a Veterans Health Administration facility when the illness damaged his liver and took his life at the age of 35.

Raybeez's small but loyal following accompanied the former Agnostic Front drummer from the nascent days before the "Youth Crew" era in hardcore punk, on and off of three record labels, before finally turning out en masse for two sold-out benefit shows following his passing.

He is often cited as one of the seminal influences in the genre, as well as one of its first major losses. Unlike the larger body of punk music, the highly youth-oriented hardcore music had previously felt very few such outpourings of grief. In the days after his passing, a sign hung from the awning in front of CBGBs that simply said "R.I.P. Ray." For more than a year following his death, every release on the Victory Records label was dedicated to his memory, as well as two independent compilations. Like the benefit shows following his death, these albums raised funds for several not-for-profit groups Ray had worked for which helped at-risk youth.

Wild Bill Davis And Johnny Hodges In Atlantic City (Speakers Corner)

In the Sixties, the two befriended musicians Wild Bill Davis and Johnny Hodges often met up for jam sessions, at galas with Duke Ellington, and in various studios to make recordings for several record companies. However, their live concerts in Grace's Little Belmont in Atlantic City in 1966 were the declared highlights for critics, the public and musicians alike. This is not only proved by the masses of people who swarmed to the club, which was always jam-packed, it is also reflected in the sales figures of their recordings.

On the present recording, the listener is offered a first-class programme of own compositions, Duke Ellington hits, and head arrangements. Good Queen Bess and Rockville are quite exceptional, and the other titles are hardly less enthralling. The rhythm group is hotter than hot with Lionel Hampton's Bobby Durham on the drums, and the two grand old men of swing really let themselves go. The trombonist Lawrence Brown, musical buddy from the Duke Ellington Orchestra, grooves in the background and we can be happy (thanks to the producer Rad McCuen!) that we can still thoroughly enjoy this great disc almost 50 years later.

Recording: August 1966 live at Grace's Little Belmont, Atlantic City (USA), by Ed Begley
