The Sound Of Speed

An orchestral tribute to wheels, wings, and whirly-birds, Bob Thompson's 1960 concept LP rhapsodizes about the technology of human transport, from Vespa scooters to Le Mans racers, from tricycles to rocket ships. Each vehicular vignette is book-ended by authentic sound effects, with vivid stereo motion. The Sound of Speed is an overlooked gem from a bygone era of orchestral elegance. It has been mastered in wide-angle stereo and pressed on 180g vinyl in the year composer/arranger Bob Thompson turns 85.

Raymond Scott And The Secret 7

    Rare Stereo Mix

The same Raymond Scott who gave the world jazz novelties long associated with Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck cartoons was deep into
modern jazz in 1959 and assembled a band of cream of the crop
jazz cats to record The Secret Seven. Released in 1960 as a limited
pressing, the secrecy extended to withholding the identity of the musicians (the players were later identified as Elvin Jones, Milt Hinton,
Kenny Burrell, Eddie Costa, Sam "The Man" Taylor, Harry "Sweets"
Edison, Wild Bill Davis and Toots Thielemans).

    This reissue is the
extremely rare STEREO mix (CD was issued in MONO) and the front
and back cover replicates the original 1960 vinyl. It features a number
of quirky Scott originals, along with imaginative arrangements of pop
standards, several bizarre novelty numbers, and a jazz-noir piece that
includes a murder with sound effects.

    The Nashville Sound

Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, guitarist Jason Isbell and his mighty band, the 400 Unit, have announced the release of their highly anticipated new album, The Nashville Sound (Southeastern Records/Thirty Tigers). The Nashville Sound is the follow up to 2015's critically acclaimed Something More Than Free, which won two Grammy Awards (Best Americana Album & Best American Roots Song, "24 Frames") and two Americana Music Association Awards (Album of the Year & Song of The Year, "24 Frames"). See Highlights.

Without exaggeration, Jason Isbell has become one the most respected and celebrated songwriters of his generation. He possesses an incredible penchant for identifying and articulating some of the deepest, yet simplest, human emotions, and turning them into beautiful poetry through song. "There's no better songwriter on the planet at this moment, no one operating with the same depth, eloquence or feeling," says American Songwriter Magazine. Isbell sings of the every day human condition with thoughtful, heartfelt, and sometimes brutal honesty, and the new album is no exception.

The Nashville Sound features 10 new songs that address a range of real life subject matters that include politics and cultural privilege ("White Man's World"), longing nostalgia ("The Last Of My Kind"), love and mortality ("If We Were Vampires"), the toxic effect of today's pressures ("Anxiety"), the remnants of a break-up ("Chaos and Clothes") and finding hope ("Something To Love"). Songs such as "Cumberland Gap" and "Hope The Highroad" find Isbell and his bandmates going back to their rock roots full force.

The Nashville Sound was recorded at Nashville's legendary RCA Studio A and produced by Grammy Award-winner Dave Cobb, who produced Something More Than Free and Isbell's celebrated 2013 breakthrough album Southeastern. The Nashville Sound is the first official Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit album since 2011's Here We Rest. The 400 Unit features Derry deBorja (keyboards), Chad Gamble (drums), Jimbo Hart (bass), Amanda Shires (fiddle) and Sadler Vaden (guitar).

Jason Isbell's music speaks to so many who often feel as though his songs were written specifically for them. Isbell's lyrics and sincere delivery cut to the core and make genuine, lasting connections. The Nashville Sound helps to remind us how music continues to unite and connect us all. It is a comforting thought at a time when understanding, compassion, and honesty seem to be an afterthought.

The Sound Of Jazz (Pure Pleasure)

The Sound Of Jazz is a 1957 edition of the CBS television series Seven Lively Arts, and was one of the first major programmes featuring jazz to air on American network television.
The one-hour program aired on Sunday, December 8, 1957, at 5 p.m. Eastern Time, live from CBS Studio 58, the Town Theater at 851 Ninth Avenue in New York City. The show was hosted by New York Herald-Tribune media critic John Crosby, directed by Jack Smight, and produced by Robert Herridge. Jazz writers Nat Hentoff and Whitney Balliett were the primary music consultants.
The Sound Of Jazz brought together 32 leading musicians from the swing era including Count Basie, Lester Young, Ben Webster, Billie Holiday, Jo Jones and Coleman Hawkins; the Chicago style players of the same era, like Henry 'Red' Allen, Vic Dickenson, and Pee Wee Russell; and younger 'modernist' musicians such as Gerry Mulligan, Thelonious Monk, and Jimmy Giuffre. These players played separately with their compatriots, but also joined to combine various styles in one group, such as Red Allen's group and the group backing Billie Holiday on Fine and Mellow.
The show's performance of Fine and Mellow reunited Billie Holiday with her estranged long-time friend Lester Young for the final time. Jazz critic Nat Hentoff, who was involved in the show, recalled that during rehearsals, they kept to opposite sides of the room. Young was very weak, and Hentoff told him to skip the big band section of the show and that he could sit while performing in the group with Holiday.

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

The Sound Of Wilson Pickett (Speakers Corner)

Wilson Pickett's best years were those when he recorded for Atlantic Records, and he remained convinced of this even after changing to other labels in his later career. Atlantic boss Jerry Wexler took the promising young Gospel singer under his wing and launched him on his rapidly developing career as an unruly soul man. Pickett's aggressiveness, which in his mature years occasionally resulted in him having backstage fights with musicians and managers, are expressed here in strong words and are given further bite by his antagonistic band. Although he lashed out to the full in his emotional, crackling vocal attacks, he never lost control and even his strongest outbursts remained highly musical. His unique, breathless sound and his ferocious efforts to express himself succinctly do not make for easy listening on this superb hit record and for white people, who according to Pickett would never understand soul music anyway, could well present a real challenge. Is this such fascinating music that you become dumbstruck? Very possibly, as critic Joachim von Mengershausen writes: »His voice is hard, aggressive and strained; it hardly binds the tones together, chops up the phrases, blurts out the essentials - Pickett has eliminated all the Uncle-Tom warmth in soul and has virtually rocked it away.«

    Musicians:

    • Wilson Pickett (vocal)

    • Spooner Oldham (piano, organ)

    • Andrew Love (tenor saxophone)

    • Floyd Newman (bassoon)

    • Gene Miller, Wayne Jackson (trumpet)

    • Jimmy R. Johnson, Chips Moman (guitar)

    • Junior Lowe (bass)

    • Roger Hawkins (drums)

Head is The Monkees audacious soundtrack to the 1968 psychedelic comedy/adventure film of the same name written and produced by Bob Rafelson and Jack Nicholson. Ranked 302/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Eminem's masterful second record has the chops and the credentials to go along with it. The Marshall Mathers LP won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album, The Real Slim Shady won the Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance and the record was also nominated for the Grammy for Album Of The Year. Expanding upon his debut, Eminem's follow-up is both funnier and darker than his debut and the production is nearly as evocative as the raps, with liquid basslines, stuttering rhythms, slight sound effects and spacious soundscapes. Being as LSD was first developed in a laboratory in Basel, it is perhaps no coincidence that one of the most far out albums of all time was made by this Swiss band (no small feat, given the competition!). Brainticket's 1971 debut here, begins normally enough with two fine psychedelic kraut rock-influenced tracks but the remainder of the album plays like a Joel Vandroogenbroeck's endless droning organ, a variety of musique concrete type sound effects and vocallist Dawn Muir's trippy vocals.

Library Catalog Music Series: Music For Noise Reductions

Library Catalog Music Series: Music For Noise Reduction was inspired by the commercial work Effacer does in audio mastering. Effacer figured that different noise reduction processes and audio restoration tools that are usually used to remove clicks/noises from tracks could be used to exaggerate different effects in music. He started taking a sound with reverb, then use the dry version of that same sound, minus the reverb, and use that as the noise print for the noise reduction algorithm. Thus by removing the source sound, a ghostly sound (reverb) would be left behind. Effacer came up with a formula for this to create further sounds and textures: (source sound + effect) - (source sound) = artifact of effect. By putting these sounds together into tracks, add several years, and these experiments resulted in an album.

    Natural Born Killers

    Import

Most soundtracks simply feature the film's incidental music or songs that were heard in the background throughout the movie. Not Natural Born Killers. Assembled by Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), the soundtrack to Oliver Stone's brutally warped serial killer saga recreates the hallucinatory feeling of the film. Snatches of dialogue interweave with song fragments and sound effects, creating a harrowing, violent soundscape where Leonard Cohen occasionally offers a relief of sorts. In fact, Reznor managed to convey the insanity of the movie's lead characters much more effectively than Stone did with the film itself.

The Only Thing I Ever Wanted

This London-based duo's formula of addictive melodies, electronic frolics, and found sounds have put them on the musical map. Silly noises married to sultry vocals and perspicacious lyrics produce recordings of shimmering originality and nascent charm. The problem with a lot of electronic music is that it either takes itself too seriously or not seriously enough. Psapp offers the perfect solution: do both...knick-knacky sound effects, plucky violin, and whizzing bleeps over warm, elastic beats for a euphoric sound that's like a toy closet come to life - SF Weekly.

    Drink The Sea

The Glitch Mob is a collaboration of three Dj's (edit, Ooah and Boreta) that play the genre of dance music known as glitch hop. Glitch hop is characterized by the use of sound effects made to resemble a computer or machine encountering some sort of technical problem (aka glitching). This might be hard to imagine for some so here is an example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gwcdc5zUuGM&feature=related. The Glitch Mob never used the glitch aesthetic quite that often but rather only in parts to help transitions or add variety. On Drink The Sea however, the glitch sound is gone and the band seems to have opted for a more heavy house sound with some trancy influences.

    Fourth Dimension

Two essential recordings from Radiophonic Workshop members Paddy Kingsland & Peter Howell get the reissue treatment on June 2nd with the vinyl only release of Kingsland's exceptional 1973 album Fourth Dimension, alongside fellow member Peter Howell's ARP synth opus, 1978's Through A Glass Darkly [MOVLP1036]. Both of these albums have been crate diggers' gold for many years and are reissued for the very first time.

The BBC Radiophonic Workshop came together in 1958 to produce music and sound effects for BBC Radio and Television programmes using hand built, custom designed electronic, tape and electro-acoustic techniques. By the mid-1970s, the synthesiser era was well-and-truly here, with the Workshop increasingly being asked to provide theme tunes and background music for TV and radio.

Fourth Dimension is a landmark in synthesiser music and covers a broad spectrum of styles. Listening now it fits very well into the then craze for electronic, textural, spacey synthesiser music.

    Destroyer

Ranked 496/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

The pressure was on Kiss for their fifth release, and the band knew it. Their breakthrough, Alive!, was going to be hard to top, so instead of trying to recreate a concert setting in the studio, they went the opposite route. Destroyer is one of Kiss' most experimental studio albums, but also one of their strongest and most interesting. Alice Cooper/Pink Floyd producer Bob Ezrin was on hand, and he strongly encouraged the band to experiment -- there's extensive use of sound effects (the album's untitled closing track), the appearance of a boy's choir (Great Expectations), and an orchestra-laden, heartfelt ballad (Beth). But there's plenty of Kiss' heavy thunder rock to go around, such as the demonic God of Thunder and the sing-along anthems Flaming Youth, Shout It Out Loud, King of the Night Time World, and Detroit Rock City (the latter a tale of a doomed concert-goer, complete with violent car-crash sound effects). But it was the aforementioned Peter Criss ballad, Beth, that made Destroyer such a success; the song was a surprise Top Ten hit (it was originally released as a B-side to Detroit Rock City). Also included is a song that Nirvana would later cover (Do You Love Me?), as well as an ode to the pleasures of S&M, Sweet Pain. Destroyer also marked the first time that a comic-book illustration of the band appeared on the cover, confirming that the band was transforming from hard rockers to superheroes.

    BBC The Radiophonic Workshop

    180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl

    Remastered

Available On Vinyl For The 1st Time

The BBC Radiophonic Workshop, set up in 1958, was originally created as a sound effects unit for BBC Radio and TV programs. Pioneering new forms of drama during the late 1950s and early 60s demanded innovative and original use ofmusic and sound. The art of what became known as sounddesign began in the cramped undergroundstudiosof the Radiophonic Workshop at the BBC Maida Vale complex in London. Their early explorations into sound drew on the principles of musique concrete, early tape manipulation techniques and primitive oscillators and tone circuits built by technicians at the workshop. As technology developed and the synthesizer, tape technology, computers and early digital sampling emerged the Radiophonic Workshop maintained an their position at the leading edge of electronic music and sound design.

The vast body of work that emerged between 1960 and 1997 has influenced generations of musicians both within electronica and more widely in the Rock, Progressive and Pop field. Groundbreaking work such as Delia' Darbyshire's 1963 Doctor Who Theme (still the high water mark of experimental music), sound effects albums, works of early electronica and popular favourites such as Blake's 7 and The Hitchhiker's Guide To the Galaxy have ensured the RWS a place at electronica's top table. From the Beatles, Pink Floyd and Vangelis to Orbital, The Chemical Brothers and beyond, their legacy lives on in the sounds and textures of so much contemporary music. But it isn't just musicians who have drawn on their work.

The technical development of the studio and modern recording techniques owes them a great debt too. Sound engineer Roger Mayer, who supplied effects pedals to Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix, is just one of many engineers for whom their work proved inspirational. He described the Workshop as, ''the great unsung heroes of British electronica.''

These two records, recorded in 1968 and 1975 respectively, were released at the height of The Radiophonic Workshop's influence. They showcase the dawning of processed sound, treated sounds and sound design.

Quirky and irreverent BBC Radiophonic Music was originally put out as a specialist demonstration library disc for BBC drama producers. In 1971 the BBC released it commercially. This is the first time it has been made available on vinyl in its first and original form.

The Radiophonic Workshop from 1975 was a compilation of the best-known of the Radiophonic Workshop's output to date. This is the first time it has seen a vinyl reissue in its original form.

Both albums have been remastered for vinyl from the original tapes by the Radiophonic Workshop's archivist Mark Ayres. Pressed on 180 gram audiophile vinyl.

    Confess

Twin Shadow, the creative moniker of George Lewis Jr., presents his second album, Confess. Self-produced and with mixing duties handled by Michael H. Brauer (Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney), the 10-song set finds Lewis Jr. doing what he does best; remembering and reinventing, and fashioning a soundtrack which sounds refreshingly and distinctly modern. The first track to be taken from Confess is the anthemic Five Seconds.

Confess is the follow up to Twin Shadow's 2010 debut breakout album Forget of which Pitchfork, giving the album an 8.4 'Best New Music' review stated, "The songs may be catchy, but their intricacy and thoughtful storytelling makes them stick. And for its impressive sonic sheen, the album's skillful restraint makes it sound better with every spin."

Over the course of the past two years George Lewis Jr, has toured the US and the world virtually non-stop, amassing fans everywhere. His live shows are one big dance party; Spin described them best calling them a freewheeling full-band boogie fest. The tracks grew exponentially at every turn. Canned kits became crushing drums, bass burbles became serious bumps, sound effects became walls of synth, and Lewis transformed into a dance-driven taskmaster." Twin Shadow will once again take the show on the road with much touring planned in 2012 and beyond.
