Music By Rodgers & Hammerstein
Multiple Award Winning 1965 Soundtrack
The Sound of Music is the final collaboration between the composer Richard Rodgers and the lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II and one of their most famous collaborations. A lot of the songs from the musical have become standards, like Edelweiss, Do-Re-Mi and My Favorite Things. The story about the Austrian woman who is sent to a villa to be the governess of the Trapp Family during the second world war became known as a great Broadway production in 1959, winning different awards. The movie adaption from 1965 reached an even bigger audience and is even now as popular as ever. One of the reasons for its popularity are the sing-along tracks that are part of the fantastic soundtrack. Shortly after releasing the 1965 film musical Oscar Hammerstein died of cancer. But even now decades later the music lives on in the countless reproductions of the musical and the many artists who performed all these classic songs.
The musical, movie and soundtrack of The Sound of Music received many awards, including multiple Academy, Tony and Golden Globe Awards. The play also gained recognition by being listed in numerous top film lists all over the world.

Sturgill Simpson isn't one to rest on his laurels, which is why, less than a year after the release of his critically acclaimed debut,
High Top Mountain, the singer-songwriter is coming out with his captivating and wholly unique sophomore album, Metamodern
Sounds in Country Music. The album title - an allusion to Ray Charles' groundbreaking 1962 record, Modern Sounds in Country and
Western Music -- hints at the psychedelic sounds found within, a departure from Simpson's first album, which drew comparisons
to the music of Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard. "I think that there is a lot of room in country music for progression and sonic
oscillation, which is what I wanted to explore." Where some artists find inspiration from other music, Simpson found his in books,
devouring religious texts both ancient and modern, recent studies about discoveries in quantum physics and string theory, and
publications by Carl Sagan and Terence McKenna. He also drew upon French filmmaker Gaspar Noe's experimental drama Enter the
Void as he created murky, multi-textured soundscapes that incorporate elements of classic country, bluegrass, rock, and even a bit
of electronica, a genre that Simpson admits he has a "slight fetish" for.1. Turtles All The Way Down

The Perlman SoundNo one could deny that Itzhak Perlman holds a special place in the world of music - and no one could define it more eloquently than his old friend and colleague, the pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim: It is quite impossible to imagine today's violin heritage without the absolute musical genius of Perlman. The most obvious manifestation of that genius is the famous Perlman Sound - lustrous, warm and generous, its impact compounded by often astounding virtuosity; and yet Perlman makes it all look so easy. In fact, he communicates a positive joy in his playing.
Perlman Sound is released as a primer for the deluxe 59-album boxed set Itzhak Perlman: the Complete Warner Recordings, and may be a good option for fans who don't have enough shelf space for this expansive edition. This collection explores his artistry from the finest concerto highlights (Mendelssohn, Brahms, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Korngold, Sibelius, The Four Seasons), to virtuoso solo and chamber repertoire (Paganini Caprice No.24, Bach Partita No.3, the MÉditation from Thaïs, Flight of the Bumblebee, Zapateado) and klezmer and jazz selections. Modern Sounds in Country and Western MusicImport
Less modern for its country-R&B blend (Elvis Presley and company did it in 1955) and lushly produced C&W tone (the Nashville sound cropped up in the late '50s) than for its place as a high-profile crossover hit, Modern Sounds in Country and Western fit right in with Ray Charles' expansive musical ways while on the Atlantic label in the '50s. In need of even more room to explore, Charles signed with ABC Paramount and eventually took full advantage of his contract's full artistic freedom clause with this collection of revamped country classics.
Covering a period from 1939 to the early '60s, the 12 tracks here touch on old-timey fare (Floyd Tillman's It Makes No Difference to Me Now), honky tonk (three Hank Williams songs), and early countrypolitan (Don Gibson's I Can't Stop Loving You). Along with a Top Ten go at Eddy Arnold's You Don't Know Me, the Gibson cover helped the album remain at the top of the pop charts for nearly three months and brought Charles international fame. Above a mix of swinging big band charts by Gerald Wilson and strings and choir backdrops from Marty Paich, Charles' intones the sleepy-blue nuances of country crooners while still giving the songs a needed kick with his gospel outbursts. No pedal steel or fiddles here, just a fine store of inimitable interpretations.1. Bye Bye, Love

Lacquer Plating By Gary Salstrom And 200-Gram Vinyl Pressing By Quality Record Pressings
A musical legacy that began in Hawthorne, California and went on to conquer the world. Analogue Productions presents the ultimate pressings of 14 essential Beach Boys albums! Mastered by Kevin Gray, most from the original master tapes, and plated and pressed by Quality Record Pressings, the finest LP pressing facility in the world, these are awesome recordings to experience. And the look of each album befits its sonic superiority! Presented in old school Stoughton tip-on jackets, these time honored favorites shine brighter than the originals!
Surfin' USA was the Beach Boys' real breakthough album, showing Brian Wilson asserting himself in the studio as both a premier songwriter and arranger on a set of material that was stronger than their Surfin' Safari debut.
Apart from Surfin' Safari, which was mono only, the Beach Boys did turn in stereo masters on all of their early albums up until 1965. The Beach Boys Today! was the first LP for which they only delivered a mono master.
The stereo editions of Surfin' USA, Surfer Girl, Little Deuce Coupe, Shut Down Vol. 2, All Summer Long, Beach Boys Christmas Album and Beach Boys Concert were all mixed in stereo by their own preferred engineer, Chuck Britz, ostensibly under the group's supervision.
Brian may or may not have been present for those mixing sessions - evidence suggests that he trusted Chuck's skills enough to let him prepare those mixes on his own - but the group held onto their multitrack tapes and delivered stereo masters to Capitol, rather than allowing Capitol to prepare their own stereo versions. Later, when Brian was only delivering mono masters, Capitol would prepare the Duophonic pseudo stereo editions for the stereo market, says Alan Boyd, producer and Beach Boys' archivist.
The Beach Boys' practice of double-tracking their vocals really lends itself to stereo mixes. Split left and right, as they are on a lot of those early stereo versions, those doubled vocal parts can really envelop the listener, surrounding them with Wilsons, Loves and Jardines!
All of the newer stereo mixes on these remastered albums (The Beach Boys Today!, Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!), The Beach Boys' Party, Pet Sounds and Smiley Smile) were all done by Mark Linett on behalf of the Beach Boys.
Besides the hit title track on Surfin' USA and its popular drag-racing flip side (Shut Down), AllMusic.com notes that Surfin' USA has a lovely, heartbreaking ballad (Lonely Sea) and a couple of strong Brian Wilson originals (The Noble Surfer and Farmer's Daughter).
There are also a surprisingly high quotient of instrumentals (five) that demonstrate that ... the Beach Boys could play respectably gutsy surf rock as a self-contained unit. Indeed, the album as a whole is the best they would make, prior to the late '60s, as a band that played most of their instruments, rather than as a vehicle for Brian Wilson's ideas. The LP was a huge hit, vital to launching surf music as a national craze, and one of the few truly strong records to be recorded by a self-contained American rock band prior to the British Invasion. - AllMusic.com

MusicReleased on the heels of her breakthrough, Tapestry, Carole Kings Music is every bit the equal of its more famous predecessor, a Number One smash that features impeccable songwriting, infallible melodies, and extraordinary piano playing. In short, everything thats made King an institution. After of years of being overshadowed, this 1971 singer-songwriter classic has finally been given the audiophile treatment its long deserved.
Half-speed mastered from the original master tapes, Mobile Fidelitys numbered limited-edition 180g LP of Kings second solo masterpiece is rife with intimacy, transparency, soulfulness, and you-are-there sound. Never before remastered, Music seems like a brand-new album, Kings familiar voice, intelligent arrangements, and ravishing support band presented on a deep, three-dimensional soundstage. Your appreciation for and understanding of Kings inspirational lyrics and ravishing performances will increase tenfold. Mobile Fidelitys 180g LP brings you that much closer.
Accompanied by percussionist Bobbye Hall, drummer Russ Kinkel, guitarist/vocalist James Taylor, and a cavalcade of professional wind musicians, King delves further into R&B and jazz-derived pop, coming up aces every time. Warm, intelligent, and cohesive, songs echo with simplicity and honesty. And as is typical of much of Kings work, several of tunes here were later covered by other artists, including Its Going To Take Some Time (the Carpenters). Yet the originals trump the later renditions, and the rendition of the standard Some Kind of Wonderful stands as the best ever recorded.
With Taylor lending more of a hand on Music than he does on Tapestry, King expands her confident reach on the piano and peppers the songs with graceful touches of saxophone, flute, pedal-steel guitar, and woodwinds. Ballads sway (Surely), gospel brightness lifts spirits (Brighter), and backup vocals float heavenly pop (Song of Long Ago). Yet the best aspect is Kings voice, infused with fondness, concern, joy, and a quiet power that parallels the delicacy and deliberate nature that define Music.
Mobile Fidelitys audiophile edition is free of the limiting artifacts that have helped keep this record in the dark for the better part of the past few decades. Previously diminished, acoustic guitars, subtle brass elements, and soft percussion contribute to the enjoyment of the songs, and Kings voice pleasant, assuring, emotion comes through with incredible clarity and inflection. The brilliance of the legendary Lou Adlers original production is restored to its full glory.
If its at all possible and it is this treasure now sounds even more heartwarming than it did upon original release. The companion to Tapestry, Music is an aural and sonic delight.

Freetown SoundDev Hynes (Blood Orange) is set to release Freetown Sound, his third proper full-length album, and the
most expansive statement of his career. Written and produced by Hynes, Freetown Sound is a tour de
force, a pastiche of Hynes' past, present, and future that melds his influences with his own established
For well over a decade, DevontÉ Hynes has proven himself a virtuoso of versatility, experimenting with
almost every conceivable musical genre under a variety of monikers. After moving to New York City in
the mid-2000s, Hynes became Blood Orange, plumming the oeuvres of the city's musical legends to
create a singular style of urgent, delicate pop music. Freetown Sound, which follows 2011's Coastal
Grooves and 2013's breakthrough Cupid Deluxe, builds upon everything Hynes has done as an artist,
resulting in the most expansive artistic statement of his career.
Drawing from a deep well of techniques
and references, the album unspools like a piece of theater, evoking unexpected communions of moods,
voices, and eras. Freetown Sound derives its name from the birthplace of Hynes' father, the capital of
Sierra Leone. Thematically, it is profoundly personal and unapologetically political, touching on issues of
race, religion, sex, and sexism over 17 shimmering songs. Each song echoes into another, with leitmotifs
carefully stitched throughout, yielding a sound palette that gently recalls elastic funk, slinky R&B, and
pure pop, but resisting easy categorization.
For Hynes, the process of self-discovery involved in creating Freetown Sound proved as valuable as the
finished product. "This record really tries to say things that I've been wanting to express for many years,"
he says. "It looks into my childhood and examines who I am at this point in my life. There are so many
crazy layers to it that it's actually quite hard to talk about it, but the record is very reflective of how my
brain works. It's been very interesting for me trying to understand and tie all of these things together. It's
been a way of working through it."LP 1

Electronic SoundRemastered From The Original Analogue Master Tapes And Cut At Capitol Studios To Ensure Exceptional Audio Quality Throughout

As a direct result of The Beatles' keen curiosity about experimental music and other avant-garde artistic expression, Apple Records launched its short-lived Zapple subsidiary in February 1969 as a forum for unfettered sonic exploration, or, as announced at the time, 'more freaky sounds'. George's Electronic Sound and John Lennon and Yoko Ono's Unfinished Music No. 2: Life With The Lions, both released in May 1969, were Zapple's only releases before it was closed down. Electronic Sound's cover art, painted by George, depicts his Moog IIIP (which was later used on four tracks by The Beatles on their album Abbey Road) with the four modules from which the sound was synthesized. Each side of the Electronic Sound LP featured one exploratory long-form work. However, the American version of the album placed the pieces on opposite sides to the UK record, but with the same titles retained on the labels. Consequently, there has been confusion about which track is which. Research revealed that the UK LP was correct with 'Under The Mersey Wall' on Side 1 and No Time Or Space on Side 2.1. Sound Of Lies
180 Gram Remastered Vinyl With Bonus Tracks
Following Mark Olson's amicable departure, the remaining Jayhawks reconvened under the direction of Gary Louris to record Sound of Lies, the band's
most ambitious album to date. Like Wilco's Being There, Sound of Lies uses country-rock as a foundation and wanders off into a variety of different sonic
territories, including surf rock and Beatlesque pop, bringing the music closer to the sound of adult alternative pop/rock. Although the surface of the album
is pleasant and melodic, Louris has written a uniformly harrowing set of songs, inspired both by the dissolution of his partnership with Olson and a recent
divorce. The lyrics have a naked, emotional honesty which would have been more affecting if the music echoed its sentiment, yet the record still has a
subtle grace and power, proving that the Jayhawks remain a distinctive band without Olson. This remastered edition includes bonus tracks.LP 1

Woven MusicCategories cannot contain Shinji Masuko. Hes the founder of DMBQ, one of Japans greatest modern psychedelic bands, a respected music and comic reviewer, an astonishing guitarist and a master guitar builder. Hes also been a member of the Boredoms since 2004, having designed and built their notorious seven neck guitar (the Sevena) while acting as the bands principle guitarist.
The idea for Woven Music, Masukos first solo work, was born during preparations for a series of Boredoms concerts in 2009 when Shinji played Kid Millions (of Oneida and Brah Records) some backing tracks hed created for the Boredoms current concert piece, Boadrum. For a short section of the live performance an incredible mass of multi-tracked droning guitars is mixed into the pounding chaos of the 9 person, multi-drummer ensemble. Shiji played Kid Millions this unadorned recording while they were between rehearsals at Shinjis home in Osaka and Kid was astounded, convinced that this music needed to be heard on its own.
Masuko thus inspired, spent the next year carefully crafting these pieces into stand alone works. Woven Music for Blue Steppe is a mass of mostly acoustic instruments while Woven Music for Silver Ocean explores the sound of a throng of electric guitars.
In the last twenty-plus years Masuko has created an astounding body of work with DMBQ and the Boredoms, but hes never released music of such singular beauty and depth. These are meditative, swirling pieces which suggest the resonances of their titles: grand and eternal natural vistas. These are immersive works and completely singular in their scope, Brah is proud to present these unheard compositions to a broader audience.1. Woven Music for Blue Steppe

The Sound Of EverythingBorn out of late-night graveyard experimentation, Seattle's Thousands is comprised of guitarists/vocalists Kristian Garrard and Luke Bergman. The Sound of Everything, the duo's stark and original spin on modern folk music is one of the most gentle and serene recordings you're likely to ever hear. The band's debut album is solely voices, guitars, and an array of environmental sounds such as birds, leaves, wind, intentionally recorded along with the songs and untouched.
Each recorded live in one take, the songs on the album provide a musical snapshot of a moment in time, a picture postcard of the world as it was where and when Garrard and Bergman recorded each of these 11 songs. The two drove tirelessly across the Pacific Northwest searching for recording locations, settling on an abandoned silo, a barn and a riverbank as the perfect natural studios. Devil MusicThe Men are Rich Samis, Kevin Faulkner, Nick Chiericozzi and Mark Perro. We created Devil Music in our practice space over a weekend in January.
We wanted to give ourselves something enjoyable to listen to with this record... Something that had our personality in it, not just another record to get reviewed, to get into festivals, to get on tv, to participate in some sort of endless, winless game. This isn't a campaign.
Jordan Lovelace (mem. of Pampers) engineered and recorded Devil Music. Jonathan Schenke (mem. of Eaters and engineer of 100's of records) mastered the sessions on a Neve console in New York. These fine gentlemen knew we were after a raw four track sound. They used our strokes on the tape to get us where we wanted to go. Every record sounds a bit different than you think it will.
Some newer things came along for the ride like cassette cut ups, damaged vocal cords from years of yelling, a saxophone and of course the ten new songs. Some old ideas are still in the mix: the tracks were done live, including the vocals. The packaging/artwork was designed and produced by us.1. Dreamer

Worship MusicWorship Music is the long-awaited new studio album from Anthrax, one of the four original architects of speed and thrash-metal. Not only is Worship Music Anthraxs first studio release in eight years, but the album marks the return of vocalist Joey Belladonna, whose last studio work with the band was 1990s Persistence of Time. Belladonna is now firmly back in the Anthrax line up with drummer Charlie Benante, guitarists Scott Ian and Rob Caggiano, and bassist Frank Bello.
Getting Joey back in as our full-time, permanent singer solidified us as a unit like we hadnt been in years, said Ian. All of us were on the same page creatively, working together, writing together, and becoming a band again.
I get goosebumps listening to the new music, Benante admitted. Scott and Robs guitars are absolutely on fire, Frankie kicks butt on bass, and hearing Joey sing, well, the band sounds like Anthrax, Joeys back and its great.
The 11-track Worship Music was produced by Anthrax, Rob Caggiano and Jay Ruston and recorded over a four-year period at studios in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Belladonnas return to the band prompted some of the songs originally recorded to be re-crafted with fresh lyrics or tweaked to better suit his overall vibe and energy. Some of the songs were completely replaced with brand-new songs and, of course, all have Belladonnas inimitable vocal stamp on them.
Im very happy with the record, it sounds like Anthrax, said Belladonna. There are some interesting twists and turns on it, and plenty of tunes for fans to get their fingers on. I felt very comfortable working with Jay Ruston, and I think everyone brought to the table what they needed to. Now its time for the fans to listen and get what theyve been waiting for. Sound Of ChangeThe Sound of Change can't come from external forces, it has to emanate from within. For Dirty Heads, evolution beyond their reggae-rock roots has developed over time and is manifested on their new album "Sound of Change." Due out summer 2014 via Five Seven Music, the album boasts some of the groups' most diverse and ambitious work to date. "Sound of Change" takes a literal meaning with the production of this album, as the band links up with Grammy award winning producer Supa Dups (Nina Sky, Bruno Mars), Buddah Shampoo (Ty Dolla $ign), Niles (of hip hop duo, The Cataracs), Ward 21 (311, Major Lazer reggae collaborators) and long-time friend and collaborator, Rome (Sublime).
The feel-good vibe associated with their sound was not forgotten. Sonically, "Sound of Change" amps up the groundwork laid by previous albums. Fine-tuned alternative choruses work harmoniously with hip-hop influenced production that seams the songs together. Universal themes of compassion, reflection and happiness are at the core of "Sound of Change." "We wanted the songs on this album to touch on the things we deeply care about and the people we are inside" front man Jared (Dirty J) Watson asserts, "but then we want to address the other side - when the weekend comes and we need to let go and just rage." Who can't relate to that feeling?
Vocalist/Guitarist Dustin Bushnell (Duddy B) is constantly looking to connect the dots between the live show with the album tracks, often mentally mapping out the live elements as the songs are being recorded. For the touring cycle surrounding the release "Sound of Change" the band plans to bring a live show that will energetically compliment each new track. Dirty Heads have racked up their miles bringing that live experience to fans across the globe for over a decade. "Now that our lives are touring we get to see the world," both Watson and Bushnell agree, "we're taking stories and vibes from around the world and making this album is the culmination of that."
The band's breakout 2008 album "Any Port In The Storm" included the chart-topping hit track "Lay Me Down" which features current Sublime frontman, Rome. The track had an incredible run for eleven weeks at #1 on the Billboard charts, laying a solid foundation for their follow up sophomore album "Cabin By The Sea" which was released in 2012. Dirty Heads then began their musical metamorphosis with their 2013 acoustic album "Home - Phantoms Of Summer," allowing time for their metamorphosis embodied in "Sound of Change." Their previous work featured contributions from talent such as Del The Funky Homosapien, Matisyahu, Rome (Sublime) and guitar legend Slash.
"Sound of Change" is a melting pot of all the band members' experiences and musical persuasions, addressing both serious and lighthearted subject matter in their signature way. On the lighter side of the spectrum, "Burn Slow" (Produced by Rome, featuring rapper, Tech N9ne) showcases the hip-hop oriented side of the band. With anthemic choruses and a feel-good aura, Watson boasts the song is the perfect soundtrack for those times when you're "having a good time, going out with friends and realize that sometimes you just need to chill." The retro sound and sexy lyrics of "Hear You Comin," highlights Watson's soaring vocals in its hook. The first single, the metaphorical "My Sweet Summer" (produced by Niles from The Cataracs) is, in reality, a song for all seasons. An undeniable groove underlines the lyrical lament. The title track "Sound of Change" is the key manifestation of the artistic maturation of the band. "The world is always changing political and social outlooks and on a broader scale, look at the changes within yourself" Watson reflects, "the song is about embracing the change life is going to bring no matter what, because that change is inevitable." Though there is diversity on "Sound of Change," as a body of work, it is cohesive in a way only Dirty Heads can achieve.
As a full six-piece unit, frontmen Watson and Bushnell are joined by keyboardist/vocalist Shawn Hagood, percussionist Jon Olazabal, drummer Matt Ochoa and bassist David Foral. This lineup is hell-bent on grabbing new ears with "Sound of Change." Their own journey can be heard within the album- all you have to do is sit back and listen.1. Sound Of Change

The Nashville SoundGrammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, guitarist Jason Isbell and his mighty band, the 400 Unit, have announced the release of their highly anticipated new album, The Nashville Sound (Southeastern Records/Thirty Tigers). The Nashville Sound is the follow up to 2015's critically acclaimed Something More Than Free, which won two Grammy Awards (Best Americana Album & Best American Roots Song, "24 Frames") and two Americana Music Association Awards (Album of the Year & Song of The Year, "24 Frames"). See Highlights.
Without exaggeration, Jason Isbell has become one the most respected and celebrated songwriters of his generation. He possesses an incredible penchant for identifying and articulating some of the deepest, yet simplest, human emotions, and turning them into beautiful poetry through song. "There's no better songwriter on the planet at this moment, no one operating with the same depth, eloquence or feeling," says American Songwriter Magazine. Isbell sings of the every day human condition with thoughtful, heartfelt, and sometimes brutal honesty, and the new album is no exception.
The Nashville Sound features 10 new songs that address a range of real life subject matters that include politics and cultural privilege ("White Man's World"), longing nostalgia ("The Last Of My Kind"), love and mortality ("If We Were Vampires"), the toxic effect of today's pressures ("Anxiety"), the remnants of a break-up ("Chaos and Clothes") and finding hope ("Something To Love"). Songs such as "Cumberland Gap" and "Hope The Highroad" find Isbell and his bandmates going back to their rock roots full force.
The Nashville Sound was recorded at Nashville's legendary RCA Studio A and produced by Grammy Award-winner Dave Cobb, who produced Something More Than Free and Isbell's celebrated 2013 breakthrough album Southeastern. The Nashville Sound is the first official Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit album since 2011's Here We Rest. The 400 Unit features Derry deBorja (keyboards), Chad Gamble (drums), Jimbo Hart (bass), Amanda Shires (fiddle) and Sadler Vaden (guitar).
Jason Isbell's music speaks to so many who often feel as though his songs were written specifically for them. Isbell's lyrics and sincere delivery cut to the core and make genuine, lasting connections. The Nashville Sound helps to remind us how music continues to unite and connect us all. It is a comforting thought at a time when understanding, compassion, and honesty seem to be an afterthought.1. Last Of My Kind

Sound Of A Woman
Combining the thickest and most addictive bassline you're likely to hear this year with flashes of fizzing EDM synths and an impressive powerhouse
vocal, this future deep house classic is the perfect mix of the old and the new. - Yahoo!
Kiesza is a fascinating pop polymath whose music is as colourful, diverse and surprising as the twists and turns that led her where she is today. - MTV
Kiesza's sound is as diverse as her resume. Having served as a reservist in the Royal Canadian Navy and competed in Miss Universe Canada, she
played folk ditties before gravitating toward the electronic grooves of her debut album. The release is anchored by the breakout single Hideaway, a
pulsing house number that hearkens back to the genre's early-'90s heyday, with Kiesza providing the sultry vocals.1. Hideaway

Sound Of RevolutionWarzone was a hardcore punk band from New York City. Anti-racist skinhead frontman Raymond "Raybeez" Barbieri was the group's only consistent member between its formation on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in 1982 until Barbieri's untimely death due to pneumonia on September 11, 1997. A U.S. Navy veteran, he was receiving treatment that many fans and friends have claimed was shamefully inadequate in a Veterans Health Administration facility when the illness damaged his liver and took his life at the age of 35.
Raybeez's small but loyal following accompanied the former Agnostic Front drummer from the nascent days before the "Youth Crew" era in hardcore punk, on and off of three record labels, before finally turning out en masse for two sold-out benefit shows following his passing.
He is often cited as one of the seminal influences in the genre, as well as one of its first major losses. Unlike the larger body of punk music, the highly youth-oriented hardcore music had previously felt very few such outpourings of grief. In the days after his passing, a sign hung from the awning in front of CBGBs that simply said "R.I.P. Ray." For more than a year following his death, every release on the Victory Records label was dedicated to his memory, as well as two independent compilations. Like the benefit shows following his death, these albums raised funds for several not-for-profit groups Ray had worked for which helped at-risk youth.1. S.O.S.

Life Without SoundDylan Baldi maintains simple, admirable standards in quality. "A thing I like to do with all of my records is drive around with them," the 25-year-old Cloud Nothings frontman says. "In high school, I would listen to music for hours like that: just driving through the suburbs of Cleveland. And if it sounds good to me in that context and I can think of high school me listening to it and saying, 'That's okay,' I feel good about the record. This is the one that's felt best."
"This" is Life Without Sound, the radiant, far-far-better-than-okay fourth full-length his rock outfit has recorded since he began writing and releasing songs on his own under the Cloud Nothings alias in 2008. While its highly acclaimed predecessor-2014's Here and Nowhere Else-came together spontaneously, in the little time that touring allowed, Life Without Sound took shape under far less frenetic circumstances.
For more than a year, Baldi was able to write these songs and flesh out them out with his bandmates-drummer Jayson Gerycz and bassist TJ Duke-before they finally joined producer John Goodmanson (Sleater Kinney, Death Cab for Cutie) at Sonic Ranch in El Paso, Texas, for three weeks in March of 2016. The result is Baldi's most polished and considered work to date, an album that speaks to his evolving gift with melody while also betraying the sort of perspective that time provides. You can hear it in the aerodynamic guitar pop of "Modern Act," and feel it in the devastating wisdom of "Internal World," a lullaby-like howler that dwells on "the fact that being yourself can be uncomfortable and even potentially dangerous at times."
"Generally, it seems like my work has been about finding my place in the world," Baldi says. "But there was a point in which I realized that you can be missing something important in your life, a part you didn't realize you were missing until it's there-hence the title. This record is like my version of new age music," he adds. "It's supposed to be inspiring."
