    Midnight Special

Midnight Special is a perfect complement to Back at the Chicken Shack, which was recorded the same day. Organist Jimmy Smith, tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, and guitarist Kenny Burrell always make for a potent team, and with drummer Donald Bailey completing the group, the quartet digs soulfully into such numbers as the groovin' Midnight Special, Jumpin' the Blues, and One O'Clock Jump. Highly recommended.

A Blue Note essential, Midnight Special by jazz organist Jimmy Smith is part of the Blue Note 75 anniversary vinyl reissue campaign - featuring 100 titles. Key to the initiative is high quality audio at affordable prices. Album features performances recorded in 1960.

    Something Special

The three years spent on MGM Records between 1966 and 1968 were golden ones for Lee Hazlewood. He spent them working with his muse, Suzi Jane Hokom, writing a still-unreleased book, The Quiet Revenge of Elmo Furback, competing with Phil Spector from their respective studios, and coming up with the formula for the boy/girl" songs for which he'd become famous. In fact, the unflattering portrait on the cover of Something Special did little to hint at how hip this late-flowering talent (he was in his late 30s when "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" made him a star songwriter) had become.

The common strand on the MGM trilogy is one of the unexpected happening. They were an ill fit for a major label-experimental, difficult to pigeonhole, and unpredictable. Those descriptors apply nowhere more aptly than Something Special. Where 1966's The Very Special World Of Lee Hazlewood and 1967's Lee Hazlewoodism: Its Cause And Cure had employed an arranger, Billy Strange, and a full orchestra, Something Special stripped things back and brought in a flavor of jazz and blues, complete with gravelly-voiced scatting courtesy of collaborator Don Randi. This sat alongside tracks like "Little War" and "Hands," the kind of late night, acoustic balladeering Hazlewood would later seize for his career-highlight LP, Requiem For An Almost Lady. The sound was that of a stripped-down nightclub jazz/blues/folk combo, fully rejecting the psychedelic music going on all over the world.

The album made clear that forging a career as a serious star was not at the top of Hazlewood's agenda, and at the third opportunity, he'd let the listener in on the joke. Tellingly, Hokom recalls Hazlewood saying the MGM albums were his "expensive demos. I'm sure that MGM thought that they would be successful." Little chance of that with Something Special -it was originally released only in Germany. The same year, Hazlewood founded the LHI imprint, and began building his own empire, one we've been lovingly archiving for the past few years. We now present this missing link in the story, three albums that generated some of Hazlewood's best-and most varied-work.

    Special Victim

From swirling, tumultuous outbursts to pummeling destruction, the controlled chaos that is Future Death is ready to be unleashed in 2014. Stripping everything to the bone, the band's creative process is heavily linked to impulse as they capture their feelings organically and in the moment while leaving little room for conceptualization. The Austin-based band formed in 2012 as Alton Jenkins and Bill Kenny began writing and recording what later evolved into their debut EP, which was self-released in the summer of 2013. They added bassist Jeremy Humphries to the lineup and vocalist Angie Kang found them later after months of writing. Special Victim, their forthcoming debut full-length on Bloodmoss Records, was recorded and mixed by This Will Destroy You's Alex Bhore in a funeral-home-turned-studio owned by producer John Congleton. With the creative tools at hand, Future Death took a bright, explosive approach on Special Victim. Like the band's overall creative process, the concept of impulse is apparent throughout album itself. There's not much time to breathe, and that's exactly why it is such a thrilling and powerful listen.

    Uptown Special

Uptown Special, the fourth album by producer-songwriter-musician Mark Ronson, is a tale of several cities, a wide range of collaborators, and a road trip deep into the American South. However the story of Ronson's latest project really starts back when he was New York's hottest DJ.

In the late 1990s into the early 2000s the New York club scene was percolating with booming hip-hop and glitzy R&B. In those days before he emerged as a multi-talented musical force Ronson manned the turntables of many great parties. "It was a fun time to be playing music," he says. "At clubs like Cheetah you didn't have to play a hip hop record until 1a.m. You could play early '80s classics by Chaka Khan, Boz Scaggs and Michael Jackson and rock the crowd. I'd play Steely Dan's 'Black Cow' at 11:30 and it world work. Then, at 1am you'd play 'Hypnotize' by Biggie and the crowd would go wild. I come back to those memories."

This mix of vintage R&B and pop with contemporary hip-hop is what made Ronson a star DJ. "I never get tired of hearing records like Earth, Wind & Fire's 'Can't Hide Love' next to 'Rock the Boat' by Aaliyah," says Ronson. "I wanted this record to feel like hearing that kind of musical mix on great New York club night."

Uptown Special has all of the flavor of a night with Mark rocking the ones and twos with funk, soul, and psychedelic pop in a style that echoes classic productions by Quincy Jones and Steely Dan, and funneled through its creators sophisticated understanding of arrangement and melody. Of his three previous albums Mark feels like Uptown Special is closest in spirit to his 2003 debut, Here Comes the Fuzz, which came directly out his DJ experience. "The difference," Mark says "is I was reaching for things musically I wasn't quite ready to execute. With all the experience I've gained over the years I had the maturity and knowledge to really pull this together."

The first single, "Uptown Funk," features GRAMMY® award-winning superstar Bruno Mars on vocals and drums, who sings with passion and plays drums with fire that will bring funk back on the radio. Joining Mars on the track is Mark on guitar, Mars' bassist Jamareo Artis and Jeff Brasker on keys. Mark produced Mars' massive hit single, "Locked Out of Heaven," where they developed a close musical kinship. "As a live performer no one out here now puts on a show like Bruno," says Mark. "This record has that same intensity. When you hear him sing you are always aware of how much he puts into a performance." Mark was so taken with the single's power that it inspired the album's title.

Though Ronson is now based out of London, most of Uptown Special was recorded in the United States with stops in Los Angeles, Memphis and Mississippi. Most of the music was recorded with live musicians with Mark anchoring the sessions on guitar, while surrounded by a complimentary mix of gifted young players and R&B vets. Several musicians, who worked with Mark on his historic production of Amy Winehouse's multi-platinum Back To Black and his own breakthrough album, 2007's Version, rejoined him for this album, including drummer Homer Steinweiss, bassist Nick Movshan and guitarist Tommy Brenneck. Also making guest appearances on 'Uptown Special' are bassist Willie Weeks (who played on Stevie Wonder's classic Innervisions) guitarist Carlos Alomar (who created the familiar guitar riff on David Bowie's "Fame") and drummer Steve Jordan (member of the John Mayer Trio).

Mark Ronson's Uptown Special is a unique blend. It's an album with a serious literary pedigree matched to down home greasy funk. It features a progressive pop vocalist from Australia and one reared in Mississippi, the spiritual root of American music. Hot young contemporary players dominate while some tracks are spiced with legendary musicians. It's a mix that reflects the musical taste and life experience of its creator.

    Election Special

Ry Cooder's Election Special, due out from Nonesuch/Perro Verde Records on August 21, 2012, is a wake-up call as the United States heads into the fall election season.

Howdy there neighbor-let me ask you something. Do you really think Charlie and Davy sit around on the couch with family and friends watching re-runs of Dancing with the Stars?, asks Cooder. See, 'Wasting Away in Margaritaville' was a good song in its day, but we need a different kind of a song now if we're going to make headway against the likes of Charlie and Dave. Those type of guys are plenty swift, they're all deacons in the High Church of the Next Dollar. We need to get smarter, fast. The world is full of C and D students in high places and there's more coming up all the time. Don't be one.

    Midnight Special

Before Uncle Kracker spent six weeks at #1 with When the Sun Goes Down, a duet with good friend Kenny Chesney, country music might've seemed an odd place to find the Detroit-based good-time Kid Rock alumni. But as several summer tours with Chesney, the Top 5 Smile and the enduring recurrent status of Sun prove, Uncle Kracker's deep melodies and sense of what the heartland means has made him a perfect fit in today's post-rural realm of country music.

The first single Nobody's Sad on a Saturday Night, a theme song for a weekend party, from his label debut Midnight Special, has already hit the airwaves and is being embraced by Country radio. With producer Keith Stegall at the helm (Alan Jackson, George Jones and Zac Brown, as well as writing #1 songs for Jackson, George Strait and Dr. Hook), Uncle Kracker took his strong sense of melody and infectious choruses into the studio in Nashville. Writing all 11 songs with some of Nashville's best known writers, including Shane McAnally (Come Over, Somewhere with You, Last Call), Scooter Carusoe (Anything But Mine, Better as a Memory) and Chris Tompkins (Before He Cheats, Blow Away), as well as Detroit rocker JT Harding - Uncle Kracker grounds his music in bands people know, places they've been, moments they've shared and a real sense of America today.

The Elvis Presley/Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series Continues!

Celebrating The 45th Anniversary Of The NBC TV Special "1968 Comeback" Soundtrack Album!

First Time 180 Gram Vinyl & Gatefold Cover Presentation

Mastered Impeccably By Joe Reagoso At Friday Music Studios And Manufactured At R.T.I.

Elvis Aaron Presley was born during the Great Depression into a poor family in Mississippi. They moved to Memphis during the early fifties, and as
a struggling young truck driver, he cut some demos at Sun Studios as a gift for his beloved mother Gladys.
The folks at RCA Victor knew that this young fellow named Elvis was destined for superstardom. They quickly bought out his contract and signed the
legend to a long-term deal, and his first RCA single Heartbreak Hotel forever etched "The King of Rock and Roll" trademark to his name.

Over the next three decades, Elvis Presley would release dozens of hit albums and tons of smash singles, spend time in the Army, star in over 35
top charting films, as well as sell out concert tours around the states and Canada making him the most successful solo artist of all time. In 1968, after a
series of very successful movies and top charting recordings, Elvis made a wise decision to work with the folks at NBC and develop a Christmas TV special,
which would have The King perform in front of a live studio audience for the first time in years.
This legendary career move spread like wildfire and soon was hailed as "The Comeback," further igniting his career to an all new high. The King
took his shows to the theatres and casinos and super massive stadium tours over the next number of years, while releasing a plethora of even more gold
    and platinum recordings

With the soundtrack album nearing release, it was already gaining popularity in advance thanks to the chart single smash If I Can Dream. This
masterwork album included a treasure trove of rare television studio performances that captured a very great time in the musical history of this genius.
In addition to the wonderful hit single aforementioned, The King reaches back to his early Memphis days with his first chart topper Heartbreak
Hotel and more fifties classics like Lawdy Miss Clawdy, All Shook Up and even a pair of Jimmy Reed blues classics with Big Boss Man and Baby, What
    You Want Me to Do.

Even more hit tracks and sensational medleys featuring Elvis classics abound including Guitar Man, Blue Christmas, Love Me Tender and Can't
Help Falling in Love. Plus the beautiful ballad Memories is also included which has since become an Elvis fan favorite thanks to the wonderful production
    on this brilliant album.
Elvis Presley's TV Special album would go on to become one of his biggest albums ever, as fans rushed to the stores to buy this stunning rock and
roll soundtrack back in December of 1968. Initially pressed on vinyl, this amazing album has been out of print on vinyl for several decades that is until
    now!

28pt. Gatefold Includes New Archived (Early 1960s Era) Photos Of Johnny Cash

    Box Car Numbered Edition

Mastered By Kevin Gray At Cohearent Audio

''Johnny Cash transcends country music...he represents what American Music is all about!''

Known throughout the world as one of the major figures of post-Hank Williams country music, Johnny Cash constantly sought to expand his musical horizons and avoid being pigeonholed. Cash was at his most engagingly eclectic on Orange Blossom Special, recorded in 1964.

For starters, ''The Man In Black'' covered three tunes by Bob Dylan, then the most talked-about young singer-songwriter of the dawning folk-rock era. (''It Ain't Me Babe,'' ''Don't Think Twice, It's Alright,'' and ''Mama, You've Been On My Mind''), The Nashville musical establishment hardly embraced Dylan's mind-blowing lyrics, but Cash, knowing genius when he heard it, was the first major country star to cover Dylan's work. By the same token, he also rendered two numbers by A.P. Carter of the legendary Carter Family, who, along with Jimmy Rodgers, created the musical template that's still the model for ''traditional'' country, bluegrass, and some forms of folk. And Cash's unmistakable, tough-hewn baritone rendered the classic fiddle tune that is the title track, as well as ''Danny Boy'' (with a spoken word intro), the spiritual ''Amen'' and the traditional story-song ''The Long Black Veil.''. Cash's compositions include ''The Wall,'' one of the prison songs for which he is known, and the protest tune ''All Of God's Children Ain't Free.'' Orange Blossom Special (with liner notes by the artist and never-before seen archive photos) finds Cash backed by the Tennessee Two, his outstanding guitar/bass tandem of Luther Perkins and Marshall Grant and guest appearances by such Nashville aces as Boots Randolph on tenor sax, pianists Floyd Cramer and Bill Pursell, guitarist Norman Blake, and harmonica ace Charlie McCoy. And on Johnny Horton's ''When It's Springtime In Alaska (It's Forty Below),'' Cash is accompanied by the now-familiar female voice of June Carter.

    Saturday Night Special (Pre-Order)

When a band finds their audience, it's obvious right away. There's a connection that goes beyond the music, beyond the lyrics, beyond the musicians. It's about capturing a moment together that bonds the audience and the music, and the band that is giving it their all. Louden Swain found their audience when they were first asked to perform at a fan convention for the long running CW television show, Supernatural.

For the past four years the indie rock foursome has lent their sound to what is a celebration of the show, and the coming together of a community. Each weekend (and there are more than 20 of them a year across the globe) the band serves as the "house band" think what the Roots do on the Tonight Show) and introduces the actors to the stage. Then on Saturday night they put on a two hour concert which encompasses both the and's 20 year history of original music, and guest appearances from fellow Supernatural actors performing songs they have chosen. The result is the Saturday Night Special.

A show that is about family, emotions, overcoming life's setbacks, and living in the moment. This brand new release features 14 tracks culled from multiple shows between Nov. 2015 and Dec. 2016 and features guest appearances from some of Supernatural's most recognizable faces including Jensen Ackles, Ruth Connel, Kim Rhodes, Brianna Buckmaster, Matt Cohen, Osric Chau, Gil McKinney, and Richard Spreight Jr.

    G. Love And Special Sauce

    G. Love & Special Sauce's self-titled album is their debut and has reached gold status.

On this record you can find their signature's tune Cold Beverage, featuring lighthearted jive lyrics and funky musical accompaniment, the video to this song got heavy rotation on MTV and it put them on the map. This Ain't Living is a precursor to the comforting Philly soul style that would be explored more thoroughly on their next album. Town to Town adds variety to the album with its slow-as-molasses blues style.

    G. Love & Special Sauce's debut serves as the musical foundation on which the group would build its future sound.

    Orange Blossom Special (Speakers Corner)

Just like the often sung-about fellow locomotives 'Midnight Special' and the 'Chattenooga Choo Choo', the 'Orange Blossom Special' finds itself bathed in the very best tradition of American long-distance trains and memorable journeys. Puffing steam trains symbolise an atmosphere of departure, endurance and the mechanical pulse beat of profit-oriented industrialisation, while also conjuring up the spirit of down-and-outs who tramp from one end of the country to the other along the railtracks, dodging train fares.

Almost guilelessly at first, the album number 20 forged ahead into the hearts and hips of Cash fans with old favourites and climbed to number three in the Country charts. If you listen carefully, you will notice that three top Bob Dylan songs have crept in - It Ain't Me Babe, Mama, You've Been On My Mind and Don't Think Twice, It's All Right. Dylan, who in his early years was far from enjoying cult status and was condemned a godless troublemaker, communist and traitor to folk music, found a perspicacious patron in Cash. In no uncertain terms, Cash demanded that Dylan's critics should »Shut up! ... and let him sing!« and even sang Dylan himself. This present LP is not merely a perfectly produced Country album by the Man In Black, but a traction engine for the work of his spiritual brother.

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    The Midnight Special (Speakers Corner)

No attempt has ever been made to compare Harry Belafonte with other singers of his own generation or generations following. Perhaps this is because there simply is no other singer in the American folk scene who possesses anything remotely comparable to his uniquely silky yet dusky voice, or his genial mix of calypso, blues, gospel and traditional songs. The present album provides a wonderful testimony to the Jamaican singer's flexibility and multifariousness, which he learned to perfection of New York's jazz clubs. It includes songs such as "Midnight Special", a prisoner's nocturnal prayer for freedom, and "On Top Of Old Smokey", which Belafonte instils with intricate rhythm and Caribbean flair. And the tailor-made arrangements are no less thrilling: whether possessing all the drive of a stomping big band, filled with the intimacy of a smoochy small ensemble (with Bob Dylan on the mouth organ!) or with an earthy, folksy, blue grass sound - there's all that and plenty more! To put it in a nutshell: a veritable feast of traditional music which doesn't sound the least 'traditional'.

    • Harry Belafonte (vocal)

    • Jimmy Jones (conductor, arranger)

    • Bob Dylan (harmonica)

    • Joe Wilder (trumpet)

Kenny Burrell has appeared on so many essential jazz
recordings that jazz history and his biography seem
    irretrievably intertwined. Billie Holiday's valedictory
rumination Lady Sings the Blues, Jimmy Smith's epochal funk
throwdown Back at the Chicken Shack, Tony Bennett's Carnegie
Hall debut - Kenny Burrell played guitar for them all. Even Jimi
Hendrix once remarked, Kenny Burrell - that's the sound I'm
looking for. Here is Burrell captured live at the West-Coast jazz
mecca, Catalina's, in an easy-going program of some of his
most-requested tunes along with a few of his personal favorites
thrown in. Jazz tunes by Benny Golson, Freddie Hubbard, the
Duke and others are here all given the ever-tasteful Burrell
    treatment.

The Very Special World of Lee Hazlewood

Lee Hazlewood was a late bloomer. Following a meandering career as a disc jockey, producer, songwriter, label executive and solo artist, Hazlewood hit the jackpot at the ripe age of 37 with "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'," the song Nancy Sinatra took to the top of the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. Its success convinced MGM Records that Hazlewood was a bankable star, and they signed him as an artist in his own right the same year. But as a self-described "non-singer" whose cult 1963 debut, Trouble Is A Lonesome Town, was little more than a happy accident, they'd perhaps gotten the wrong end of the stick where Lee was concerned.

In three years on the label, Hazlewood delivered three albums and sundry odds and ends, beginning with 1966 album The Very Special World Of Lee Hazlewood. The LP found Hazlewood gunning-in as much as he ever did-for commercial success, blending country, pop, novelty, mariachi, and lounge music into something unusually of-the-moment.

Lushly orchestrated and-like the album that preceded it-half-sung, half-spoken in a way that Hazlewood made all his own, the album collected solo versions of songs made famous by Sinatra and others ("Sand," "Boots," "So Long Babe," "Summer Wine"-included as a bonus duet with Suzi Jane Hokom) alongside some of his career-best solo compositions, among them the Morricone-like opener, "For One Moment." It's a record of extremes: "When A Fool Loves A Fool" is as light and throwaway as anything he ever laid down, while the wistful "My Autumn's Done Come" (sample lyric: "Let those I-don't-care days come in, I'm tired of holding my stomach in") is as raw and honest.

Live In San Diego (with Special Guest JJ Cale)

Eric Clapton's Live in San Diego With Special Guest JJ Cale is a live album from the 2007 tour featuring JJ Cale, Doyle Bramhall II, Robert Cray, Derek Trucks and more. Almost 2 hours of music including previously unreleased versions of Layla, Tell The Truth, Cocaine and Crossroads.

Recorded at Clapton's March 15, 2007 performance at the iPayOne Center in San Diego, CA, this concert was part of a world tour that was much loved by Clapton fans and featured a stellar band that included guitarists Derek Trucks (now of the Tedeschi Trucks band) and Doyle Bramhall II. The two-hour San Diego concert was a highlight of the tour as it featured JJ Cale as a special guest on five tracks (including "After Midnight" and "Cocaine"), as well as Robert Cray on the final song of the record, "Crossroads."

After successfully covering several JJ Cale songs over his career, Clapton finally collaborated with Cale in 2006 on the original album Road to Escondido. At the time, Clapton said "This is the realization of what may have been my last ambition, to work with the man whose music has inspired me for as long as I can remember." So it is fitting that one year later, Cale joined Clapton on stage for this special concert where they performed five songs together - underlining the mutual respect the two musicians had for each other.

The concert features a superb set list from across Eric's career. Notably, it includes songs from Eric's classic Derek and the Dominos album Layla, with Derek Trucks playing many of Duane Allman's original guitar parts.

Clapton's career, spanning more than 50 years, has resulted in 18 Grammy Awards and the distinct honor of being the only triple inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

    Parklife (Special Edition)

To celebrate the 21st Anniversary of their debut release, Blur's breakthrough 1994 album Parklife has now been remastered from the original tapes by Frank Arkwright (The Smiths, Arcade Fire, New Order, Joy Division), with the remastering overseen by legendary original producer, Stephen Street. Expanded across two discs, the LP format of the Parklife remaster is cut on heavyweight 180g audiophile vinyl and is housed in a replica of the original sleeve artwork.

British pop's defining record of the 1990s, Parklife became part of the national consciousness, English vocabulary and was the first of five consecutive #1 albums for Blur. The album continued the lyrical themes of its predecessor, but stylistically reaching further afield featuring torch song balladry, instrumental waltzes, disco and angular new wave. Parklife garnered Blur two top ten singles, four Brit Awards and classic album status
