    Simmerkane II

Chadwick Stokes of State Radio and Dispatchs solo project is inspired by Chadwicks train jumping adventures across the US, this made him think of Songs of the US/Traveling and it didnt fit musically and is less political than State Radio, therefore he wrote this album to keep challenging himself creatively. Simmerkane II is a more accessible look at Chadwick Stokes featuring: Carly Simon, Blake Hazard (The Submarines), Matt Embree (of the Rx Bandits), The White Buffalo and Sierra Leones Refugee All Stars.

    Enema Of The State

Enema of the State is the third studio album by American rock band Blink-182. Produced by Jerry Finn, the album was originally released on June 1, 1999 by MCA Records. After a long series of performances at various clubs and festivals and several indie recordings throughout the 1990s, Blink-182 first achieved popularity on the Warped Tour and in Australia following the release of their sophomore effort Dude Ranch (1997) and its rock radio hit Dammit. To record their third album, Blink-182 turned to veteran punk rock producer Jerry Finn, who previously worked on Green Day's breakthrough album, Dookie (1994). Enema was the band's first album to feature second drummer Travis Barker, who replaced original drummer Scott Raynor. It is also the first album to feature their second lineup and not to feature their full original lineup.

Resistance Radio: The Man In The High Castle Album

Resistance Radio: The Man In The High Castle Album is a musical companion to the hit Amazon Prime Video Original Series The Man in The High Castle, based on author Philip K. Dick's award-winning book. Set in 1962, the series explores an alternative history of what it would be like if the Allied Powers had actually lost WWII, and Japan and Germany ruled the United States. In the storyline, the Germans now have control the Eastern seaboard, the Japanese the west coast, and in between is a small strip of land controlled by neither. This neutral zone is the refuge of holdouts, revolutionaries and rebels trying to keep the American dream alive through both active and passive resistance, and from where Resistance Radio is broadcasting.

Resistance Radio: The Man In The High Castle Album is produced and curated by Danger Mouse and Sam Cohen, and is the imagined soundtrack to the series, and features 18 songs from 1962 to coincide with theme of show. Bringing together the talents of today s most popular Indie and Alternative artists, the project features Beck, Kelis, Norah Jones, The Shins, Angel Olsen, Benjamin Booker, Karen O, and many more.

    Hush Or Howl

    Red Translucent Vinyl

Black Pistol Fire is a Canadian Rock and Roll duo that splits time between Toronto, Ontario and Austin, Texas. Their wild and energetic rock-and-roll sound has been described as a mix of classic southern rock and garage punk, garnering comparisons to early Kings of Leon, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The White Stripes, and Clutch. The band features Kevin McKeown on Guitar/Lead Vocals and Eric Owen on Drums. The two have been friends since kindergarten and began playing music together when they discovered a shared passion for rock and roll music in high school.

While playing a local Austin hotspot, Producer Jim Diamond (The White Stripes, The Von Bondies, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) approached the band about recording their 2011 record. They have supported the likes of Weezer, BRMC, Band of Skulls, State Radio, Shonen Knife, and Lucinda Williams. The band recorded their 2nd LP in the early 2012 with producer Michael Rocha in Toronto. This album, Big Beat 59, was released in August 2012, with songs with the album being put into rotation on major taste-making radio stations KEXP, KCRW, KUTX, and KDHX.

The band gained further momentum during SXSW 2013 where The Huffington Post called the band 'the next big thing' and 'the most energetic and musically versatile of all the bands playing the festival'.

Hush or Howl was again recorded with Michael Rocha, this time in Austin, TX.

    Point Of Entry

Point of Entry is the seventh album from the British heavy metal band Judas Priest. It was originally released on 26 February 1981.

In 1980 Judas Priest garnered some airplay with Breaking the Law and Living After Midnight from their album British Steel. As a result, the band pursued a more radio-friendly direction on Point of Entry.

Following the conclusion of the British Steel World Tour, the band began work on their next project. By this time, they had sufficient funds to fly all their equipment to the huge, state-of-the-art Ibiza Studios in Spain. This gave Point Of Entry a louder, stronger, more live sound than previous Judas Priest albums.

    The Joker

Remastered By Steve Miller And Kent Hertz

    Pressed On 180 Gram Vinyl

The Joker is the eighth album by Steve Miller Band, originally released in 1973. The album marked a period of significant change for the group as the band abandoned their psychedelic oriented music for a more melodic, smooth rock/blues sound. Perhaps not coincidentally, it was also their first solid commercial success due to the strong radio-play of the title track. The album reached #2 on the Billboard 200 and has been certified Platinum in the United States.

Unseen Photos, Flyers, And Band Ephemera

The South Africa of the late 1970s was neither the right place nor time to launch a mixed-race punk band. Yet, following the student-inspired Soweto Uprising of 1976, it was also exactly the right conditions to foster a band like National Wake, one formed in an underground commune, and one whose very name exists in protest at the divisive, racist apartheid regime. Never before collected together, Light In The Attic is set to release National Wake's full body of work as Walk In Africa 1979-81.

Featured heavily in the recent documentary Punk In Africa , National Wake played punk, reggae and tropical funk, equally at home in the city's rock underground and the township nightclub circuit. Ivan Kadey started the band with two brothers, Gary and Punka Khoza. The three were from different worlds - while Ivan was an outsider, a Jewish orphan born in the traditional Johannesburg immigrant neighborhood, Gary, Punka and their family were forcibly moved to the troubled township of Soweto under the apartheid regime. Later joined by guitarist Steve Moni, the whole band grew up against a backdrop of township unrest, social upheaval and suburban tedium that characterized apartheid-era South Africa.

National Wake released just one album, in 1981. It sold approximately 700 copies before being withdrawn under government pressure. The band subsequently disintegrated, but their influence could be traced in the racially mixed post-punk underground centered around Rockey Street in Johannesburg throughout the 1980s, their legacy transmitted through fanzines and underground cassette trading.

Sadly, Gary and Punka Khoza both passed away in their 40s. Kadey now works as an architect in Los Angeles, but his attention eventually turned back to the band as their legacy grew in the digital era, with the emergence of specialized music websites and Punk In Africa leading to their rediscovery. Czech State Radio memorably described the band as "perhaps the most dissident music scene of the 20th century: a multi-racial punk band in a fascist police state."

In 2011, Kadey re-released the band's self-titled album on CD in South Africa, but spoke about having more than 20 tracks that had never seen the light of day - until now. "All of these recordings put together they speak of the whole evolution of the band," he has said. "From a sort of naive, almost belief that we could miraculously change everything to realizing what a struggle it was, and what the country was going through and what it would go through."

Hard Rock From The Middle East

    Import

The Devil's Anvil was a 1960s hard rock band based in New York City. They released one album, Hard Rock from the Middle East, in 1967, showcasing a mix of 1960s hard-rock sound with Arab, Greek and Turkish songs and melodies.

The music on the album is often sung in Arabic. Its arrangements walk a tightrope between the modern psychedelia of the day and centuries-old traditional folk modalities and melodies.

Hard Rock from the Middle East was released during escalating tensions between Israel and neighboring Arab countries and the subsequent Arab-Israeli War in 1967. Subsequently, radio stations in the States would not play the album because of its controversial content. Thus making this a hidden gem and highly sought-after album.

Instrumental in the band's formation was producer Felix Pappalardi, vocalist and bassist of the band Mountain, who helped sign them with Columbia Records.

Hard Rock from the Middle East is an album that was ahead of its time, and over five decades, it still is. With its stunning musicianship, songcraft, and skillful weaving of musical traditions into a cohesive musical statement, it endures and is perhaps even more relevant today than when it was first released.

Past, Present And Future (Awaiting Repress)

Al Stewart's Past, Present and Future launched the artist from being an English coffeehouse staple
into a worldwide rock superstar thanks to the intriguing lyrics and melodies contained within the two sides
of this 1974 masterwork. While achieving cult-like status in the U.K. with his unique brand of folk/rock,
Past, Present and Future featured some of Al Stewart's finest songs like the prog-rock champions Roads
to Moscow, Soho (Needless to Say) and his timeless masterpiece Nostradamus.

While playing college gigs and opening for major recording acts across the states, Al Stewart's Past,
Present and Future grabbed the attention of astute rock radio programmers who had discovered the U.K.
import of this classic before it reached North America. Soon, tracks like Terminal Eyes ignited a wave of
requests, developing the popularity further, while having the luxury of entire sides being played on the
more esoteric FM radio stations across the states.

Aside from being a brilliant composer and wonderful vocalist, Al Stewart also plays some mean
acoustic and electric guitar alongside some of the most important players of our time like Rick Wakeman,
Roger Taylor, Tim Renwick and many others.

Friday Music is no stranger to the important musical catalog of Al Stewart. Therefore, it is with much
honor to continue the Al Stewart Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series with the first time audiophile
LP release of Past, Present and Future. Impeccably mastered from the original Janus Records tapes
by Joe Reagoso (Al Stewart/Yes/Traffic), this long out-of-print vinyl album is now back for you to enjoy in
    a big way.

For this 40th Anniversary special limited edition release, we are also including the original rare album
cover artwork elements, in a first time gatefold cover, which will also enhance your hours of listening.

    A Head Full Of Dreams

This is the seventh studio album from multi-platinum, Grammy Award winning artist Coldplay. Front man Christ Martin stated it might be the band's final album and compared it to Harry Potter; It's our seventh thing, and the way we look at it, it's like the last Harry Potter book or something like that. He added that, unlike their promotion efforts for Ghost Stories, the band will tour for the seventh record. In an interview with Jo Whiley on BBC Radio 2, Martin hinted at the style of the album by saying that the band was trying to make something colourful and uplifting, yet not bombast. He also stated that it will be something to "shuffle your feet" to!

    True Romance

Over the past few years, Charli has released a series of singles and mixtapes, toured the globe supporting the likes of Coldplay, Santigold, Sleigh Bells and Justice and garnered champions from practically every tastemaker blog and magazine on both sides of the Atlantic. She's had 2.5 million views on YouTube, 470k views of new video for 'You (Ha Ha Ha)' (in one month) and over 630k total plays on Soundcloud. It's hard to believe someone so young could achieve so much. Through it all her main focus has always been on making the best possible album she could. This was made possible by working with some fantastic collaborators who helped hone her vision for a dark, emotional pop record including Ariel Rechtshaid (Usher, Major Lazer, Solange), Patrik Berger (Lana del Rey, Robyn) as well as hotly tipped blog favourites Blood Diamonds and J£zus Millions.

As well as being an artist in her own right, Charli has written and featured on one of the biggest global breakthrough hits of 2012 for Icona Pop. I Love It created an absolute frenzy stateside, having blown up all over the world.

True Romance shares its title with an unbelievably well-cast 1993 movie written by Quentin Tarantino, who was reassembling cultural detritus way before mash-ups and microblogging. Charli XCX's approach to pop is similarly postmodern (how 90s does that sound?), pulling from moody 80s synth-pop, sassy turn-of-the-millennium girl groups, and state-of-the-art contemporary producers to create something distinctive and immediately memorable. She clearly understands the internet, having shared two original mixtapes and two influences mixtapes before her official full-length, but this carefully pruned set is no data dump. And there you'll see a glimmer of True Romance's most throwback aspect: its evident pop ambition, an overriding sense of an imagined mass audience for music that's radio-ready yet outsider-friendly. It's almost like Napster-- and the filler-crammed album sales model that preceded it-- never happened.

In fact, by the time Charli XCX was a teenage electro-house devotee, illegal file-sharing's early free-for-all had already given way to iTunes and other legal download services. Robyn had already released her self-titled comeback album. So it might be only natural that Charli XCX would keep the pre-bubble faith that people will pay for emotionally direct, bubblegum-catchy, yet stubbornly left-of-center songs about falling in and out of love. But the generous hooks on the previously released singles here, such as the gospel-kissed prechorus of the yearning Stay Away or the Santigold-savvy lilt of love-and-the-bomb brooder Nuclear Seasons, are extraordinarily welcome just the same. Even better are newer singles such as the gorgeously bitter You (Ha Ha Ha), which inhabits its cloud-rappy Gold Panda sample like they were made for each other, and the almost-as-gorgeously blissful What I Like, which recounts a still-young relationship with the cheeky frankness of Lily Allen or the Streets, and the sing-songy near-rapping of the Spice Girls.

The several songs on True Romance that hadn't previously surfaced in videos or other releases aren't quite as strong, but they're effective enough to suggest Charli XCX's best work might still be ahead of her. The Todd Rundgren-sampling So Far Away, with the sun-dappled lushness of the Avalanches, is a clear highlight; Charli XCX's vocals are usually plain-spoken, but the anguished break-up plea Set Me Free proves she can reach for Jessie Ware-like dramatics when appropriate. The pitch-shifting no one is forever intro added at the start of opener Nuclear Seasons probably should've been given its own track-- and later on the album it is, when the same backing vocal forms the base of the cloudy, broken-hearted Grins. Elsewhere, the haunted confession How Can I, while solid enough, is a reminder that Charli XCX's lyrics so far tend to fall relatively flat; when, on swooning finale Lock You Up, she sings, It hits me like a ton of bricks, she leaves the clichÉ untweaked.

And then there's Cloud Aura, a lovelorn, engagingly laid-back bit of groove that lets Grimes' Genesis video co-star Brooke Candy rap horribly about Chris Brown. Candy's guest verse previously appeared on 2012's uneven Super Ultra mixtape, and it was near-universally panned. It isn't any better now. But in an era when too many up-and-comers are all too eager to please, this stubborn refusal to back down displays another quality in short supply: genuine irreverence. The songwriting and production credits on True Romance include Usher's Climax co-conspirator Ariel Rechtshaid and I Love It collaborator Patrick Berger, among others, who also share some credit (and blame). But like 90s pop stars turned 10s pop sophisticates Justin Timberlake and BeyoncÉ, Charli XCX stamps her personality across the entire project, and True Romance suggests she'll be worth following for a while.

Patton conceived of the album while living in Bologna, and became attracted to music he heard on the radio featuring pop singers backed by orchestras. Released on May 4, 2010, through Patton's record label Ipecac Recordings, Mondo Cane has been met with favorable responses from music critics. Reviewers have drawn comparisons to California, an earlier album by Patton's first group Mr. Bungle. Mondo Cane peaked at #2 in the United States' Classical Albums chart, briefly charting in Switzerland and Finland as well.

    Bounce

Bounce is the eighth studio album by American rock band Bon Jovi, originally released on October 8, 2002 through Island Records. Produced by Luke Ebbin, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora, the album was recorded at Sanctuary II Studio in New Jersey.

Bounce was heavily influenced by the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, owing in part to Jon Bon Jovi's proximity to New York. The title Bounce was a reference to New York City's and the United States' ability to bounce back from the World Trade Center attacks as a nation. The cover image for the album includes a stylized image of a radio telescope dish at the Very Large Array.

The album debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200, making it Bon Jovi's highest debut in the band's history at that time.

Get busy living or get busy dying

1994 proved to be an amazing good year for movie theaters, as these classic films saw the light of day; Pulp Fiction, Lion King, Forrest Gump, Natural Born Killers and The Shawshank Redemption.

The Shawshank Redemption tells the story of Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), a banker who is sentenced to life in Shawshank State Penitentiary for the murder of his wife and her lover, despite his claims of innocence. During his time at the prison, he befriends a fellow inmate, Ellis Boyd Red Redding (Morgan Freeman), and finds himself protected by the guards after the warden begins using him in his money-laundering operation.

The film received multiple award nominations (including seven Oscar nominations) and highly positive reviews from critics for its acting, story, and realism. It is considered to be one of the greatest films of the 90s. Readers of Empire magazine voted the film as the best film of the 90s, and it placed number 4 on Empire's list of The 500 Greatest Movies of All Time in 2008. In March 2011, the film was voted by BBC Radio 1 listeners as their favorite film of all time. The Shawshank Redemption is the highest-rated movie on IMDB with an average star count of 9.3, closely followed by The Godfather.

The Shawshank Redemption score was composed by multiple (Grammy) award winner Thomas Newman. The score was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score in 1994, which was Newman's first Oscar nomination.

A central scene in the film features the soprano Letter Duet (Canzonetta sull'aria) from Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, which is included on the soundtrack. Original songs by Hank Williams and The Inkspots are included as well.

    Noah's Ark

Since the mysterious and beautiful La Maison de Mon Reve surfaced in early 2004, CocoRosie have spent months traveling the world with the likes of Bright Eyes, TV On The Radio, Antony And The Johnsons, Devendra Banhart, and Blonde Redhead. Along the way, Noah's Ark took shape, where heart-offerings of friends, family, loved ones and lost ones surface gracefully, contributing depth to the narrative journey. Noah's Ark is the result of a rootless reality, a drifting consciousness across state lines, date lines, time lines...connected to the past, vague about the future. But the heart of these songs is always issued from a tender present.

Dude Ranch is the second studio album by American pop punk band Blink-182. Recorded at Big Fish Studios in Encinitas, California with producer Mark Trombino, the album was released in the United States on June 17, 1997.

The band recorded the album during the winter of 1996-1997. With lyrical material written on the band's nonstop tours over the previous years, as well as completed songs, the band recorded with Trombino in sessions that lasted for five weeks. During the production for Dude Ranch, the members of Blink-182 were plagued with difficulties only made worse by the rushed schedule: bassist Mark Hoppus and guitarist Tom DeLonge, co-vocalists for the band, were having vocal problems and Raynor had to record his drum tracks with both heels broken, on crutches.

Promoted by lead single "Dammit (Growing Up)", the record was released in the summer of 1997 and was a success. "Dammit" became a rock radio hit single and helped the band gain mainstream credibility as they toured worldwide on the Vans Warped Tour. Three more singles were released, with "Josie (Everything's Gonna Be Fine)" gathering MTV play and charting highly in Australia. Dude Ranch eventually grew in sales and was certified platinum in the US by the end of the decade.

    Pulse/Quartet

Nonesuch releases Steve Reich's Pulse / Quartet. Pulse (2015) is performed by the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE)-an artist collective committed to transforming the way music is created and experienced-and Quartet (2013) is played by the Colin Currie Group, an ensemble led by percussionist Colin Currie that specializes in the music of Steve Reich; these are also the ensembles that gave the world premiere performances of the respective works.

Reich says, Pulse, for winds, strings, piano and electric bass, was completed in 2015 and was, in part, a reaction to Quartet, in which I changed keys more frequently than in any previous work. In Pulse I felt the need to stay put harmonically and spin out smoother wind and string melodic lines in canon over a constant pulse in the electric bass and or piano. From time to time this constant pulse is accented differently through changing hand alternation patterns on the piano. All in all, a calmer more contemplative piece.

He continues, Quartet, when mentioned in the context of concert music, is generally assumed to mean string quartet. In my case, the quartet that has played a central role in many of my pieces (besides the string quartet) is that of two pianos and two percussion. It appears like that or in expanded form with more pianos or more percussion in The Desert Music; Sextet; Three Movements; The Four Sections; The Cave; Dance Patterns; Three Tales; You Are (Variations); Variations for Vibes, Pianos and Strings; Daniel Variations; Double Sextet; and Radio Rewrite. In Quartet, there is just this group alone: two vibes and two pianos.

The piece is one of the more complex I have composed. It frequently changes key and often breaks off continuity to pause or take up new material. Though the parts are not unduly difficult, it calls for a high level of ensemble virtuosity. The form is one familiar throughout history: fast, slow, fast, played without pause. The slow movement introduces harmonies not usually found in my music.

Steve Reich has been called our greatest living composer (New York Times) and the most original musical thinker of our time (New Yorker). His path has embraced not only Western Classical music, but the structures, harmonies, and rhythms of non-Western and American vernacular music, particularly jazz. There's just a handful of living composers who can legitimately claim to have altered the direction of musical history and Steve Reich is one of them, states the Guardian. In April 2009 Steve Reich was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Music for his composition Double Sextet. Nonesuch has released twenty-three Steve Reich albums, beginning in 1985 with The Desert Music and including two box sets; his most recent album was Radio Rewrite (2014).

    Chicken Skin Music

Give Yourself Goosebumps: Ry Cooder's Cross-Cultural Chicken Skin Music Mixes Hawaiian, Gospel, Conjunto, Folk, and Blues Styles into a Visionary Roots-Music Tapestry

Mastered from the Original Master Tapes, Pressed at RTI, and Strictly Limited to 3000 Numbered Copies: Natural-Sounding 180g Vinyl LP Features Defined Textures, Intricate Details, Ample Airiness

The title of Ry Cooder's Chicken Skin Music - Hawaiian slang for goosebumps - serves as a direct, simple description of the album's emotional appeal. But it barely scratches the surface of a 1976 effort that triggered an interest in world music a decade before the term became commonplace and a genre into and of itself. Part of a series of inimitable mid-1970s records on which Cooder ignored traditional boundaries and instigated lasting cross-cultural communication, Chicken Skin Music blends gospel, Hawaiian, folk, blues, and Tex-Mex styles into a brilliant roots stew distinguished with virtuosic playing and inspired contextual surprises.

Mastered from the original master tapes, pressed at RTI, and strictly limited to 3000 numbered copies, Mobile Fidelity's 180g vinyl LP of Chicken Skin Music brings the brilliant instrumental textures and lively tonalities to the fore like no prior analog edition. Graced with silent, black backgrounds and generous soundstages, this reissue particularly underscores the depth of Flaco Jimenez's accordion contributions. You'll hear the air flowing through the reeds, pressure resonating from the bellows, and the wide-spanning timbres emanating from the register stops.

Equally transfixing are the lifelike manners in which the rich assortment of guitars come alive, with each note occupying its own space and portraying a character unique to the individual instrument, be it a slack-key, steel, or acoustic guitar. The result is a multi-detailed, organic-sounding musical tapestry that dazzles by way of beautiful interplay, unexpected dialogue, and connective eclecticism that proves music is indeed a common language when executed with a collaborative mindset, innovative exploration, and respectful authenticity - no easy feats, but achievements fully on display on Chicken Skin Music.

Jimenez, now a legend that's performed with everyone from the Rolling Stones to Dr. John, remains one of the keys to Cooder being able to successfully carry out what the latter deemed a mutuality in music vision. Cooder first heard conjunto accordion fare on a Mexican radio station in his car and proceeded to teach himself the instrument while committing himself to embracing the then-local, regionalized style for the set that became Chicken Skin Music. Jimenez graces three tracks, including a ravishing interpretation of Ben E. King's Stand by Me transformed into a spiritual grounded by a norteno structure and a romantic take on Jim Reeves' He'll Have to Go recast with a bolero rhythm and saxophone-accordion duet.

Chicken Skin Music isn't limited to South of the Border geography and tradition. Steel-guitarist and vocalist Gabby Pahinui and slack-key guitar great Atta Isaacs represent the 50th state on stripped-down renditions of Hank Snow's smash Yellow Roses and the wordless Chloe. Elsewhere, gospel singers team with Cooder on the Appalachian-tinted Always Lift Them Up, the midsection of which features the Hawaiian standard Kanaka Wai Wai.

Cooder bookends everything with a pair of Leadbelly numbers - The Bourgeois Blues and Goodnight Irene - chosen after the headliner witnessed Jimenez and his band perform at a local dance. Given their ordering on the album, techniques they employ, and themes, the songs also further tighten the thematic connection the headliner makes with the standout guests. In many ways, Chicken Skin Music is the equivalent of Buena Vista Social Club more than 20 years before the latter emerged. Experience it the way Cooder and company meant it to be heard - in unparalleled fidelity.

    Room 29

Compelling new Deutsche Grammophon album Room 29, a unique collaboration between Jarvis Cocker and Chilly Gonzales, asks what the ghosts of Hollywood's golden age can tell us about how we came to be where we are today.

Standing at the west end of Hollywood's Sunset Boulevard, the Chateau Marmont hotel has seen many a famous and infamous guest pass through its doors since it opened in 1929. A 2012 stay in one of its second-floor rooms inspired British lyricist and singer Jarvis Cocker to look into its history and led to this collaborative project with multi-faceted Canadian pianist and composer Chilly Gonzales. Room 29, a 21st-century song cycle, is set for release on Deutsche Grammophon Gonzales' score and Cocker's lyrics conjure up the lives of some of Room 29's previous occupants, as well as shining a light on the glittering fantasy and often bleak reality of Hollywood.

"If you must get in trouble, do it at the Chateau Marmont," noted Harry Cohn, founder of Columbia Pictures, in 1939. Jarvis Cocker was intrigued by the hotel's links to the history of the film industry. He found the key to creativity in the fact that Room 29 contained a baby-grand piano. What if it could "sing" of the life stories and events it had witnessed? The idea also ignited Chilly Gonzales's imagination, and both artists embarked on a three-year journey of artistic discovery, unearthing details about guests such as Jean Harlow, Mark Twain's daughter Clara, and Los Angeles mobster Meyer Cohen, alias "Mickey the Haberdasher". As well as dramatizing some of those stories, their songs capture both the essential loneliness of the hotel room and the ways in which moving images have "moved" people in ways they don't quite understand. Gonzales and Cocker have drawn on the 19th-century model of the song cycle for a structure capable of containing the broad sweep of emotions and states of mind elicited by the real and imaginary dramas of one unusual hotel suite. Room 29 emerges as the metaphor for a place within each of us, home to our deepest desires and fantasies.

Since moving to Germany in the late 1990s, Chilly Gonzales has pursued a breathtaking range of musical projects, spanning everything from rap and experimental rock to hip hop and Satie-inspired minimalism. The classically trained pianist collaborated with the Kaiser Quartett on his last solo album, Chambers, attracting critical acclaim to its neo-Romantic reflections on chamber music in the age of pop. The Hamburg-based string quartet plays a prominent part in Room 29, providing a sonorous tonal complement to Gonzales' piano writing and accompanying Jarvis Cocker's vocals. Lead singer and primary lyricist of Pulp for over 30 years, on and off, Cocker has also released two solo albums, and developed a successful broadcasting career, presenting both Jarvis Cocker's Sunday Service on BBC Radio 6 Music and BBC Radio 4's Wireless Nights.
