    Elvis At Stax

1973 was a crucial year in the career of Elvis Presley. Riding high on the success of Elvis: Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite, which was seen by over 1 BILLION people, Elvis did something remarkable. He chose to take control of his own business. He sold his future royalties to RCA and he started a new publishing company. No one would tell him what to do ever again.

Elvis decided that his next recording project would be on his home turf - at the red-hot STAX, the launching pad of such greats as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave and Isaac Hayes. He assembled the very best musicians in town - members of The
MGs, The Memphis Boys and his own TCB band to create the ultimate band and he searched for fresh new material that would reect his new path. Such
songs as "I Got A Feelin' In My Body" and "Loving Arms" demonstrate an artist looking to broaden his palette and his reach.

The STAX material, an amazing chapter of Elvis' career, has never been positioned as a whole
    body of work. Until now.

True Soul: Deep Sounds From The Left Of Stax (Box Set)

Complete Anthology Including All 32 Rare And Unreleased 60s And 70s Soul, Funk, Disco And Party-rap Cuts From The True Soul Vaults

10 Page Full Color Booklet Including Never Before Seen Photos, Extensive Liner Notes And A Candid Interview Between Producer Eothen Egon Alapatt And Lee Anthony

All Tracks Remastered From The Original Master Tapes

60's and 70's Soul, Funk, Disco, Party-Rap and Boogie from Arkansas's Legendary Independent Label the final installment presented as an all inclusive 4xLP Anthology.

Now-Again Records, in association with label-owner Lee Anthony, is proud to present the release of True Soul: Deep Sounds from the Left of Stax, a collection of rare and unreleased funk and soul music from the fabled Arkansas indie. Over twelve years in the making, this anthology presented over the course of two volumes of CD/DVDs and one four-LP box set seeks to establish True Soul's rightful place within America's funk and soul pantheon.

As much as this set is about the adventurous, always-funky and oh-so-rare recordings that True Soul made possible, it is also about Anthony, the man. A true, American up-from-the-bootstraps story, Anthony's is one in which his frontiersman's entrepreneurial spirit and vision remains undeterred as he sets up black-owned businesses in a post-Jim Crow South and succeeds in capturing recordings from the high water mark of America's funk and soul movement.

Anthony's story intertwines with the renowned Sam Philips an early mentor and patron and Memphis's Al Bell and Willie Mitchell with whom Anthony collaborated as he tried to cultivate Little Rock's funk and soul in the shadow of Stax and Hi Records. This anthology will make influence amongst the history of southern funk and soul is transparent, as his story of how he helped turn a stranded road band into the Gap Band.

This comprehensive True Soul Records anthology including a 10-page, booklet chock full of photos, ephemera and extensive liner notes - not only carries the rare distributed funk and soul 45s that led the likes of renowned collectors DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist to Lee Anthony's door in search of Anthony's fabled treasure chest, but also includes previously unreleased boogie, disco and party rap recorded in True Soul's early-80's twilight. You can find this all contained in a one of a kind 4xLP boxset, with each sleeve donning the True Soul logo that Anthony held so dear.

    Pain In My Heart

This album works on so many different levels, that it's essential listening for at least three categories of buyer -- fans of Otis Redding and Stax Records (natch), and more general soul listeners, and also anyone serious about their devotion to the work of the Rolling Stones and any other British invasion bands that covered American soul. Pain In My Heart was practically a road map to Mick Jagger and any number of other would-be white soul shouters in the UK, not just on the title track but also numbers like the hard rocking Hey Hey Baby. For someone only 22 years old at the time of these sessions, and just two years past his first 45 rpm record, Redding exudes astonishing power, energy and boldness, though it's all packaged with greater restraint than his subsequent records did. This was the only LP that Redding recorded during the lifetime of his idol, Sam Cooke, and his version of You Send Me is the least stylized of any of his renditions of Cooke's songs -- later on, after Cooke's death, he would throw more of himself into it. The very fact that he was covering Cooke's soul classic shows an essential difference between Redding's and Cooke's early LPs; as Redding was on a soul label, no one tried to make him into a pop singer as that'd done at RCA with Cooke -- thus, he was running on all cylinders right out of the starting gate, though he wouldn't get really interesting or show his full depth until two albums later. But even covering Rufus Thomas's The Dog, Richard Berry's Louie Louie, Little Richard's Lucille, or Ben E. King's Stand By Me, he's already doing 70% of what we came to expect from Otis Redding in the years ahead -- his writing, apart from Security, These Arms Of Mine and That's What My Heart Needs, was still somewhat less than memorable, but this is still a first-rate debut.

    40th Anniversary Edition

Following the artistic success of his 1973 Stax sessions and the global phenomenon of the Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite album and broadcast the same year, Elvis opened 1974 with a 15 city tour routed to end in Memphis and a state-of-the-art concert recording. When originally released as a single LP, Elvis Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis reached #1 on the Country charts and featured How Great Thou Art, the track that would bring Elvis his third Grammy win.

This luxury quadruple vinyl reissue contains a previously unreleased Test Run of the entire show recorded with a live audience at the Richmond Coliseum a few days before the legendary concert. The remarkable test run performance was recorded in MONO, drenched in the reverb Elvis preferred, and provides new insight into the magic of Elvis.

As a special added bonus for Elvis aficionados, we've included five intimate tracks (three of them previously unreleased) cut at the RCA Studios in Hollywood on August 16, 1974. Originally intended as reference recordings for an upcoming Las Vegas engagement, the performances-which include Down In The Alley, Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues, Softly As I Leave You, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face and The Twelfth Of Never - provide a rare fly-on-the-wall glimpse into Elvis' consummate backstage artistry as he prepares these songs for concert.

Elvis Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis will include a 16 page booklet featuring rare photos, previously unseen memorabilia, new liner notes, press clips and more.

    MEmphis Rock And Soul

Melissa Etheridge has announced the release of her new album MEmphis Rock and Soul, a tribute to Stax Records and the rich history of classic Southern soul, scheduled for release via Stax Records, a division of Concord Music Group. The album is a collection of deep soul covers associated with the original Stax label, including songs recorded by Otis Redding, Rufus Thomas, The Staple Singers, William Bell and more. The album also features new, original verses written by Melissa on two of the tracks.

While the original Stax studio is long gone, Etheridge took to another hallowed local spot, Willie Mitchell's Royal Studios (home to Al Green, Ann Peebles and others), to channel the classic Memphis sounds found on these soulful standards. MEmphis Rock and Soul was produced by Willie's son Boo Mitchell, and features a backing band comprised of Hodges Brothers and other top Memphis musicians who are legends in their own right. Etheridge even recorded with Al Green's famed RCA 77DX ribbon microphone (No. 9"). MEmphis Rock and Soul also spotlights the empowering role Stax played in the Civil Rights Movement, a fitting theme for Melissa, who has become a pivotal voice of the modern LGBT rights movement.

    Hip Hug-Her

Booker T. & The MG's smoked the charts once again in 1967 with the fabulously slinky Hip Hug-Her -just like they'd never left. As house band for Memphis' Stax Records, backing Otis Redding, Sam & Dave and Wilson Pickett, the MG's had written the book on instrumental soul music, and the Hip Hug-Her album impeccably testifies to the greatness of Booker T. Jones, Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn and Alvin Jackson. MG's versions of the Young Rascals' Groovin' and Bobby Hebb's Sunny were so downright in-the-groove, they became big hits themselves all over again. Another lip-smackingly delicious exact reproduction from Sundazed, on 180-gram vinyl, from the absolute vintage analog tapes!

    Money And Cigarettes

Money and Cigarettes marked several important turning points in Eric Clapton's recording career: his debut release on his own Duck imprint; the first album he made after giving up drinking; and new players (with the exception of second guitarist Albert Lee) including Stax Records veteran bassist Donald Duck Dunn and Muscle Shoals drummer Roger Hawkins, also bringing in guest guitarist Ry Cooder.

His new songs reflected on his changed condition, with Ain't Going Down, a thinly veiled musical rewrite of the Jimi Hendrix arrangement of All Along the Watchtower, serving as a statement of purpose that declared, I've still got something left to say. Other notable hits include The Shape You're In, the acoustic ballad Pretty Girl and covers of Sleepy John Estes' Everybody Oughta Make a Change (significantly placed as the album's leadoff track), Albert King's Crosscut Saw, and Johnny Otis' Crazy Country Hop.

    Walking The Dog

One of the artists who defined Memphis soul and put Stax Records on the map, Rufus Thomas is known for liking his R&B hard-edged, gritty and earthy. That approach served him impressively well on his debut album Walking the Dog. In contrast to the sleeker, more elaborate production style favored by the Northern soulsters of Motown, Thomas rejects pop elements altogether and thrives on rawness on his hits Walking the Dog and The Dog, as well as inspired versions of Land of 1000 Dances (which became a major hit for Wilson Pickett), Lee Dorsey's Ya Ya and John Lee Hooker's Boom Boom. Thomas was in his mid-40s when these fun, infectious recordings were made, and he definitely lives up to his title The World's Oldest Teenager (a title later given to Dick Clark as well).

    Soul Dressing

Following up their smash debut album Green Onions, 1965s Soul Dressing keeps the MGs party going in fine fashion. From the first smack of Al Jacksons crisp-as-a-potato-chip snare attack, the groove never lets up on these 12 original tracks. Guitarists will want to pay special attention to Steve Croppers aggressive, proto-fuzz/funk Telecastering (as surely, Jimi Hendrix, Ernie Isley and Billy Gibbons were all doing at the time). Add to that mix the cooking organ and high-voltage electric piano of Booker T. and rock salt-steady bass lines of original MG bassist Lewie Steinberg and youll have a dressing fit for any occasion. Hungry yet?

Want to mix up this dressing at home? First, youll need to pick up the original, done-to-perfection Stax Records analog master tapes. While stirring steadily, add a high-definition dose of the freshest vinyl available. Bake at 33 1/3 degrees until done to high glossy finish. Serve in the original, full color artwork and, PLEASE, no MSG, just BT&MG!!!

    And Now!

And Now!, Booker T. & the MGs third album, marked a major change in the bands lineup with Donald Duck Dunn replacing Lewie Steinberg on bass. The addition of Dunns funkier style is in full evidence on tracks like In the Midnight Hour and Think, the latter song also featuring blistering Telecaster licks from six-string stalwart Steve Cropper. The balance of the album includes original songs , like Top Twenty R&B single My Sweet Potato, and current chart hits, done in that inimitable MG style. With Booker T.s evocative keyboard lines and Al Jacksons propulsive percussion, this was a band of individual virtuosos that became an even greater whole. And nowget ready for the soul jam!
