    La Cuna (Speakers Corner)

Ray Barretto disliked his music being labelled 'Latin Jazz' - yet the album La Cuna is one of the most memorable of this genre, since it amalgamates the diverse moods of both Americas. In this album, the expertise of the legendary producer Creed Taylor is combined with an all-star ensemble and the supreme musicality of the skilful jazz percussionist Barretto to create a tightly-knit performance. The title-giving opening number sails along merrily with a salsa swing, but then the soaring flute melodies and the powerful piano improvisations cool down the Caribbean rhythms. How the players mingle driving patterns with delicate melodies to form beautiful song is demonstrated best in Doloroso and also in Mambotango, whereby the latter exudes controlled coolness in the somewhat electric mood.

John Tropea leans seemingly intentionally towards Santana and his art of guitar-playing, and this is further enhanced by the late Joe Farrell's phenomenal performance.
A further tribute is paid to one of the greatest musicians ever to combine various styles and trends with a speeded-up version of Stevie Wonder's Pastime Paradise.

To conclude: if not Latin Jazz, then definitely Latin AND Jazz.

    Musicians:

    • Ray Barretto (conga, percussion)

    • Joe Farrell (tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone, flute)

    • John Tropea (guitar)

    • Carlos Franzetti (piano)

    • Jeremy Wall (synthesizer)

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Elegant Gypsy

Al DiMeola's second album Elegant Gypsy proved to become one of the defining albums in fusion. While being still a member of Return To Forever, DiMeola delivered his sophomore solo record after Land Of The Midnight Sun by collaborating with jazz rock giants Steve Gadd, Jan Hammer and Anthony Jackson. He even enlists Flamenco superstar Paco De Lucia on "Mediterranean Sundance", a song which predicts the style DiMeola would eventually evolve into: Latin tinged acoustic wizardry. Previously Out of Press for Over 3 Decades

Flugelhornist Art Farmer and guitarist Jim Hall had a
regular group for a time in the mid-'60s but (except
for one occasion) had not played together since, until
this 1978 LP. This is an unusual effort for CTI in that
it is a quintet set without added horns, strings or
keyboards. Farmer and Hall are joined by vibraphonist
Mike Mainieri, bassist Michael Moore and drummer
Steve Gadd for two standards, the title cut and a jazz
adaptation of a piece by Ravel. Since Farmer and Hall
have long had very complementary styles (both being
lyrical, harmonically advanced and thoughtful in their
improvisations), it is little surprise that this set is a
    complete success.

Now this classic recording gets ORG Music's
audiophile treatment with this 180gram double LP

by Bernie Grundman and pressed at Pallas Group in

    Breakin' Away

Breakin' Away is a great follow-up of Soul crooner Al Jarreau to his previous album This Time. The album was released on in 1981 andbecame the standard bearer of the L.A. Pop and R&B sound. The album was certified Platinum by the RIAA.

Breakin' Away assumes its own identity with brilliant results. Closer To Your Love comes off as a tougher, more confident version of the songs from the previous album. Easy with its gorgeous and subtle Latin flourishes has Jarreau's purposeful delivery coming off oddly poignant in its joy and beauty. The hit We're in This Love Together is on the album, just as the bittersweet My Old Friend. Jarreau brings new life to Teach Me Tonight and it has a sweeping, dreamy arrangement. But the album of course contains the biggest hit of all, Roof Garden, with Al's inimitable vocal delivery.

The album was created with an amazing producer/artist chemistry, and top-level players like George Duke, David Foster, Dean Parks, and Steve Gadd can be heard on this record.

    Old Sock

Old Sock marks the 21st solo studio album for the guitar legend, and is released on the Bushbranch Records label, a branch of Surfdog. This double LP also includes a download card.

On the heels of a sold-out Crossroads Guitar Festival and the announcement of a major world tour, Eric Clapton announced the release of his 21st studio album and his first album since 2010. The album, Old Sock produced by Eric Clapton, Doyle Bramhall II, Justin Stanley and Simon Climie, features two original songs Every Little Thing and Gotta Get Over. Old Sock is released on Clapton s Bushbranch label, distributed through a collaboration with Surfdog Records in the USA and Canada.

The album is a collection of some of Clapton's favorite songs spanning from his childhood to present day that highlights his vast appreciation and knowledge of music. From Leadbelly to J.J. Cale; Peter Tosh to George Gershwin; Hank Snow to Gary Moore and Taj Mahal, this record is a celebration of so many who have inspired Clapton s rich musical life. Clapton has always had a remarkable ability to recognize great songs and a gift for knowing how to uniquely interpret them, as he does on Old Sock. The album explores romantic standards of the 30's, reggae, soul, rock, and includes a stand out playful collaboration with Paul McCartney, to create an experience that is quintessential Clapton.

Clapton assembled a band for the recordings consisting of longtime collaborators Steve Gadd (drums), Willie Weeks (bass) and Chris Stainton (keyboards) along with some surprise guest additions. JJ Cale joins the song Angel for backing vocals and guitar, Chaka Khan joins as backing vocalist for Get On Over, Steve Winwood on the Hammond B3 Organ on Still Got The Blues, Paul McCartney on bass/vocals on All of Me, Jim Keltner on drums for Our Love is Here To Stay.

    Cool Cat Blues (Pure Pleasure)

At last! ... British blues legend Georgie Fame finally has his Magnum Opus committed to the stuff we all love.

Contained within is a collection of Blues, Jazz and R&B standards mixed with some originals. This musicians' musician is backed by a world class band including Steve Gadd, Robben Ford, Richard Tee, Will Lee, Ralph MacDonald, Hugh McCracken and an uber horn section. Fame's classy, economic Hammond and great voice inspires superb duets with Bozz Scaggs and Richard Tee. Van Morrison, Fame's erstwhile boss, joins him on Moondance and one of his heroes, Jon Hendricks, aids him to fly through Little Pony. There is a slowed down, super sexy Yeah,Yeah and a blistering take on Willie Dixon's I Love The Life I Live. If you like Brother Ray, Mose Allison, Hoagy Carmichael, Van the Man, Peggy Lee and Lambert, Hendricks & Ross then you'll love this.

On an audiophile note, this studio album from 1990 was recorded 'live' with most tracks done in one or two takes, no overdubs and entirely in the analogue domain. A great album, beautifully recorded, finally done justice on two slabs of 180g by Pure Pleasure.

    Splendido Hotel (Speakers Corner)

Just how much creative gunpowder had Al Di Meola ignited in his early career? First of all there was the flamenco firework in the best-seller Elegant Gypsy, and secondly his mega-successful live album resulting from a summit meeting in San Francisco with Paco de Lucia and John McLaughlin. After this great start it was no wonder that such prominent colleagues as Jan Hammer, Chick Corea, Steve Gadd, Anthony Jackson and Les Paul were eager to participate in the present album Splendido Hotel.

This great line-up of musicians produce a rich, saturated sound and create numerous 'flavours' in this cocktail of sounds, which - as a double LP - can be likened to a fantastic long drink, as it were. Di Meola's idea of fusion starts off in the opening number as a slow, sluggish oriental-like melody, which develops to take on a rock rhythm. High-speed and lovingly detailed flamenco such as is found in Splendido Sundance alternates with subtle rhythms (Two To Tango) and good-humoured lighter numbers with an electronic undertone such as Roller Jubilee and a funky version of Bert Kaempfert's Spanish Eyes. With this great mix, the musicians create a wonderful atmosphere in which every Latin aficionado will feel at home.

    Musicians:

    • Chick Corea (piano)

    • Les Paul (guitar)

Jim Hall's Concierto was arguably a masterpiece and possibly the greatest LP in the history of CTI. With two legendary players in the frontline, trumpeter Chet Baker and Paul Desmond, Hall interprets standards and engaging originals. A master of melody who never wastes notes, the centerpiece for this release is Hall's interpretation of one movement from Rodrigo's Guitar Concerto, arranged by Don Sebesky. New tracks include alternate takes of You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To and Rock Skippin', plus Unfinished Business, an incomplete track that fades following Desmond's solo just as Hall starts to play (This song is actually La Paloma Azul, a Mexican folk tune played by Paul Desmond while with the Dave Brubeck Quartet about a decade earlier, also known as The Blue Dove).

    This Mother's Daughter (Pure Pleasure)

This Mother's Daughter remains the most soulful record cut by Nancy Wilson during her Capitol tenure -- producer Eugene McDaniels proves an inspired if surprising choice to helm the session, and his subtle but ingenious jazz-funk flourishes are essential to the project's immediacy and appeal. McDaniels couches Wilson in settings as smooth and rich as velvet, crafting a series of mellow, gently propulsive grooves that flirt with contemporary soul but pay heed to the singer's roots in jazz. Wilson responds with a performance that's sophisticated yet saucy, commanding the spotlight with an intensity that's missing from her lesser Capitol efforts.

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Pirates

Rickie Lee Jones Pirates On Numbered Limited-Edition 180-gram LP From Mobile Fidelity. Singer-Songwriters gorgeous-sounding 1981 album finally remastered!

Rickie Lee Jones' Pirates arrives like a cloudburst in the desert of Eighties formula pop music and recycled heavy-metal rock. So wrote Stephen Holden in Rolling Stone in his five-star review of the eclectic artists sophomore album, a set that continues to defy eras and styles. While less-well known than her 1979 self-titled debut, the ambitious 1981 record remains Jones definitive statementan effort steeped in biographical details, fictional circumstances, and classic literary elements.

Narratively blending West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet while also exploring spirit worlds and her breakup with Tom Waits, Pirates is at its core an idiosyncratic fusion of possibilities. And does Jones deliver! Accompanied by an all-star lineup that includes trumpeter Randy Brecker, Steely Dan icon Donald Fagen, drumming colossus Steve Gadd, session pro Victor Feldman, and legendary jazz arranger Ralph Burns, the singer-songwriter achieves a musical nirvana that encompasses post-bop, coffeehouse folk, bohemian pop, romantic soul, Beat poetry, and Broadway showtunes.

Harmonized vocals and jive talking bring the piano-based records rich characters to life, making it seem as if listeners are overhearing conversations between strangers. In more than one way, Pirates is a self-contained theatrical production in which Jones singing is the star attraction. Her moody whispers, cries, and coos are the voices of spurned lovers, alienated outcasts, and unlikely heroines. Albums with this kind of stylistic magnitude, close-up intimacy, and emotional intensity come around only once or so a decade.

Mobile Fidelity is proud to have had the opportunity to remaster Pirates from the original analog master tapes and produce a version that captures every nuance of this great-sounding studio masterpiece. Co-produced by Russ Titelman and Lenny Waronker (whose long list of credits include Randy Newman, James Taylor, and Eric Clapton records), trust us when we say that this 180-gram LP is one of the finest-sounding pop records youll hear. Fans of Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell, Randy Newman, Carole King, and Sarah Vaughan should consider this requisite listening. MoFis mini-LP style packaging only adds to the allure.

So dont hesitate: Be the Lucky Guy that Jones sings about on the record by securing your lowest-numbered copy of Mobile Fidelitys half-speed mastered LP of Pirates today!

Mastered from the Original Epic Records Tapes by Joe Reagoso and Kevin Gray at RTI/AcousTech

School Days was a game changer for the legendary Stanley Clarke in many ways. Not only did it forever etch the title superstar musician to his name all over the world, it also crossed his incredible music over to a whole new level of listeners, which to this day continue to flock to this album for the solid funk, rock, jazz and fusion release that only this master jam could achieve.

After a very successful run with Chick Coreas Return To Forever, world class bassist and multi-instrumentalist Stanley Clarke branched out on his own and made some very credible solo albums. When School Days hit in late 1976, it was not uncommon to hear tracks like Hot Fun and School Days being played on all formats of radio. Whether it be urban, rock, or jazz, the School Days album was the go to album of choice for many radio stations, as its rhythms and cosmic funk/rock/jazz energy would truly enhance the listening experience to a whole new realm.

And now, Friday Music is offering the legendary Stanley Clarke School Days album on 180g Audiophile Vinyl for the very first time. Mastered impeccably from the original Epic Records tapes by Joe Reagoso and Kevin Gray at RTI/AcousTech, this stunning album is a fusion masterpiece made for the audiophile vinyl domain.

For this star studded affair, Stanley Clarke reached out to some of the greatest musicians of all time like John McLauglin, George Duke, Billy Cobham, Chick Corea, Steve Gadd, Icarus Johnson and many others. Not only do you get the wonderful songs previously mentioned, but there are even more classics like Quiet Afternoon with some very solid drumming by Steve Gadd, Desert Song featuring a stunning duet with John McLauglin on guitar, as well as the apocalyptic album closer Life Is Just A Game, which features some very powerful bass and drum fireworks between Stanley Clarke and Billy Cobham, with George Dukes amazing keyboard expertise.

Comes housed in a very rare gatefold cover featuring all of the original artwork elements, which haven't been seen in years.
