Complete Albums Volume 1 (1968-1976) (Awaiting Repress)

Fifty Years After Steve Miller Band's First Two Capitol Records Albums Were Released In 1968, The Acclaimed Group's First Nine Studio Albums Have Been Remastered By Steve Miller And Kent Hertz For This New 180-Gram Vinyl Box Set

Steve Miller Band have announced the release of an unprecedented new vinyl box set collection, Complete Albums Volume 1 (1968-1976), which is set for release through Capitol/UMe.

Pressed on remastered 180g vinyl, the new box spans the band's first studio album Children Of The Future from 1968 through to 1976's multi-platinum masterpiece, Fly Like An Eagle. Also included in the box are Sailor, Brave New World, Your Saving Grace, Number 5, Rock Love, Recall The Beginning A Journey From Eden and The Joker.

One of the world's most commercially successful and acclaimed artist/bands in the history of popular music, Steve Miller was a mainstay of the San Francisco music scene that upended American culture in the late 60s. The Steve Miller Band released two LPs on Capitol Records in 1968: Children of the Future, and Sailor, which included 'Living In The USA', which became a staple on the new rock radio format. Next came Brave New World, the band's third album including the hit 'Space Cowboy,' and 'My Dark Hour,' which Miller recorded in London with fellow label-mate, Paul McCartney, who is credited as Paul Ramon.

After the band's next few albums, Your Saving Grace (1969), Rock Love (1971), Recall The Beginning (1972), and Number 5 (1970), Miller made some changes to the band, went to Los Angeles and produced his own record in 19 days. That album was The Joker. The title track became a Number One worldwide smash hit. Miller had crafted a brand of pure pop that was polished, exciting and irresistible that dominated radio in a way that few artists have ever managed.

His next two albums, Fly Like An Eagle (1976) and Book Of Dreams (1977), both went multi-platinum, and the hits they generated are among the most recognizable songs in pop music history. Hit followed hit in what seemed like an endless flow: 'Take The Money And Run,' 'Rock'n Me,' 'Fly Like An Eagle,' 'Jet Airliner,' 'Jungle Love,' and 'Swingtown,' to name a few. In 1978, Capitol released Greatest Hits 1974-78, which has sold more than 17 million copies worldwide. Miller's had a worldwide hit with 'Abracadabra,' the title track of his 1982 album and in 1986, a #1 Billboard Rock Album Track with 'I Want To Make The World Turn Around.' To this day, his songs are instantly recognizable when they come on the radio. Their hooks are the very definition of indelible.

The Joker is the eighth album by Steve Miller Band, originally released in 1973. The album marked a period of significant change for the group as the band abandoned their psychedelic oriented music for a more melodic, smooth rock/blues sound. Never Get Out Of These Blues Alive

    Import

The unparalleled John Lee Hooker recorded Never Get Out Of These Blues Alive within two days in 1971, working together with young Blues stars Van Morrison and Steve Miller, among others. John takes centre stage delivering the hard edged Blues he's known for, whilst giving his fellow musicians enough space to jam along. Stellar performances by Charlie Musselwhite on blues harp and Miller & Elvin Bishop on guitar top off the album.

The title track is simply what Blues is all about: mournful, depressed and loose - epic stuff. Noteworthy is Hooker's laidback rendition of Van Morrison's "T.B. Sheets", of which the original is found on Morrison's debut album Blowin' Your Mind.

    Built to Break

Fauss, who was described in Vanity Fair as a cross between Steve Earle and Gram Parsons, recorded the eleven new songs over five months in almost as many cities: Colleyville, Nashville, Dallas and Chicago. the record finds Fauss trading verses with Old 97's frontman Rhett Miller on Eighteen Wheels, a rolling barroom ode to long-distance trucking that simultaneously pays tribute to Fauss' myriad influences: Hank, Waylon, Willie, Cash, Dylan and Emmylou. The centerpiece may be Fauss' honest and austere rendition of the beautiful 2013 Phosphorescent track Song for Zula.

    Blaze Of Glory

    Translucent Pink Vinyl

Even before the world lost musician and author Scott Miller in 2013, the work he did with his band Game Theory had also been missing for decades. Omnivore Recordings is pleased to right that audio wrong with the first in a series of expanded reissues of the Davis, California group's classic catalog.

Blaze Of Glory, originally released in 1982, was the first music from Miller and company, after an album and EP fronting Alternate Learning. It showed the beginnings of the power-pop mixed with new-wave sensibilities the band would become known for and even hints at the upcoming Paisley Underground sound that would take California by storm.

Unavailable in its original form since its initial release (the material was remixed and re-recorded as part of a now out-of-print 1993 compilation that also commands top dollar in collector circles), the vinyl LP also sees its first reissue in over 3 decades. The first pressing on translucent pink vinyl (black to follow).

Mastered from the original tapes and featuring an 8 page booklet with rare photos, an essay from Game Theory tour manager (and set co-producer) Dan Vallor and remembrances from band members and colleagues, including The Dream Syndicate's Steve Wynn.

    Arms & Hands

Cornetist and composer Kirk Knuffke is one of modern jazz's most skilled navigators of the divide between inside and outside, freedom and swing. On his latest album, Arms & Hands, he assembles the ideal trio to bridge that divide. Joined by bassist Mark Helias and drummer Bill Goodwin, along with special guests Brian Drye (trombone), Daniel Carter (alto saxophone), and Jeff Lederer (soprano/tenor saxophone), Knuffke creates a set of music that is both engaging and inventive.

Helias is best known for his work with jazz experimentalists like Anthony Braxton, Cecil Taylor, Marilyn Crispell, and Gerry Hemingway, his band BassDrumBone with Hemingway and Ray Anderson, and his trio Open Loose with Tony Malaby and Tom Rainey. Goodwin, on the other hand, is recognized as a premiere straight-ahead drummer, through his decades-long relationship with saxophonist Phil Woods and credits that include such giants as Bill Evans, Tony Bennett, Dexter Gordon, Jim Hall, Gary Burton, and Art Pepper.
The chemistry between the trio is irrefutable on Arms & Hands, which is a showcase for the immense creativity of all three musicians. Knuffke intentionally wrote compositions that took advantage of Goodwin's gift for groove and swing while remaining open enough to allow the improvisations to wander however far afield the moment might call for.

Kirk Knuffke is a prolific composer and improviser who has worked with a host of incredible musicians including Roswell Rudd, William Parker, Uri Caine, Myra Melford, Allison Miller, Steve Swell, John Zorn, Dave Douglas, Billy Hart, Steven Bernstein, and Mary Halvorson. Internationally, he has played with ensembles at jazz festivals in Saalfeldan Austria, Willisau Switzerland, The North Sea Jazz festival in Holland, The Moers festival as well as festival dates in Canada, Mexico, Italy and France. He is currently a member of the Matt Wilson Quartet. Knuffke is also a member of the Mark Helias Quartet, the Andrew D'angelo Big Band, Josh Roseman's Extended Constellations, Kenny Wollesen's Wollesonic and Allison Miller's Boom tic Boom. Knuffke's leader debut, Big Wig, was released by Clean Feed in 2008, followed by the trio recordings Chew Your Food and Amnesia Brown and the quartet album Chorale. He has also recorded several duo CDs with pianist Jesse Stacken and one with percussionist Mike Pride, and co-led the collaborative trio Sifter with Mary Halvorson and Matt Wilson and a quartet with saxophonist Ted Brown.

2-LP Set On 180-gram Vinyl Includes Remastered Original Studio Album, Plus Unreleased Live Performances

Extra 180-Gram Vinyl LP Of Live Performances By The Miles Davis Octet Of The Nice Jazz Festival Of 1986, Available For The First Time On Vinyl

Packaging Is A Replica Of The Original Vinyl Album, Including Stickers, LP Labels, Irving Penn's Beautiful And Iconic Photographs

30 Years ago, Miles Davis made waves in the music world when he left Columbia Records to sign recording and publishing contracts with Warner Bros. and Warner Chappell in 1985. With a new label to call home, Davis immediately started working on the album, which originally had the working title, Perfect Way, named after a song by new wave pop band Scritti Politti that he was covering on the album. The album was later renamed Tutu by producer Tommy LiPuma, taken from news headlines of the day referencing the well-known South African archbishop and anti-apartheid leader, Desmond Tutu.

Rhino celebrates one of jazz music's most revered and innovative talents with a 2-LP deluxe edition set on 180-gram vinyl of Miles Davis' TUTU, released to coincide with the 30th Anniversary of Davis signing with Warner. The deluxe edition includes a remastered LP of the original album and a bonus LP of live performances at the Nice Festival held in 1986, packaged with the original artwork featuring photographs by the legendary Irving Penn.

TUTU pushed Davis back into center stage, winning him two Grammy® awards, when even the most reverent seemed to admit that his best music lay in the past. Tutu stands as an important part of the Davis legacy, and a testament to a prolific artist whose boundless creativity continuously redefined a genre throughout his legendary career.

As Davis recalled, Tutu "started with some music that George Duke, the piano player sent to me." Davis' affection for the initial track - eventually titled "Backyard Ritual" and filled with synthesizer sounds and electronic beats - revealed the trumpeter's willingness to consider music written by others, and the use of cutting-edge electronics.

Producer Tommy LiPuma recruited composer and studio musician Marcus Miller to collaborate on the project, who at 27, had already made a name for himself in jazz, R&B and popular music, playing funk, rock, bebop and hip hop. Davis later praised him as being "so hip and into the music that he even walks in tempo . . . in the studio we make a great team."

"Technology was kind of exploding and I thought it would be interesting to hear Davis making his way through this new world," said Miller. Performing on the album were George Duke, Adam Holzman and Bernard Wright, percussionists Paulinho Da Costa and Steve Reid, drummer Omar Hakim and violinist Michael Urbaniak all contributed tracks; keyboardist Jason Miles played a significant role as well, programming the synthesizers and helping push the tracks to a level of sonic detail that could compete with contemporary recordings.

Tutu would feature a variety of tunes that offered a mix of flavors and mood. Besides the title track, four were composed by Miller - "Splatch," "Portia," "Don't Lose Your Mind" and "Full Nelson" (the last a tribute to another South African leader, Nelson Mandela). "Tomaas" - named by Davis for LiPuma - was co-written by Davis and Miller, based on ideas Davis had previously recorded. The selections were rounded out by one cover - "Perfect Way," which Davis had initially chosen to be the album's title track.

By that summer, Davis' group was touring Europe. With a four-night run approaching at the Grande Parade du Jazz festival in Nice, France, the decision was made to record the group at its prime. It was a wise choice. Warner Bros. hired a mobile recording truck and all four concerts were taped. "Everybody in the band knew we were being recorded so we were on our game," remembers his nephew, drummer Vince Wilburn. "Miles had an uncanny knack for knowing not only what to record but when and where. Every night was more beautiful than the one before: wonderful weather, captive audiences and the band was on fire."

"At the time, there wasn't anything that jumped out at me," LiPuma admits. "Believe me, if I thought there had been, I would've put an album out. But having spent some time with the music, it's brilliant - and I think it's an important recording." Like the best live recordings, these tracks are both historic and timeless - filled with a spirit and snap that can still be felt today, yet cannot be repeated.

    Brahms: Alto Rhapsody (Speakers Corner)

Johannes Brahms: Alto Rhapsody, Song Of Destiny / Gustav Mahler: Songs Of A Wayfarer

The Alto Rhapsody, Song Of Destiny and Song Of A Wayfarer. Each of these three vocal compositions is unique in its expression and construction, yet the frayed emotional worlds of all three works are connected by a multitude of fine threads. The Alto Rhapsody, which Brahms wrote as a wedding gift for Clara Schumann's daughter Julie, in whom he was himself in love, demonstrates with almost Wagnerian weight the anger that the disappointed Brahms must have felt while composing. The Song Of Destiny too, with its sonorous E major waves of harmony, soon announces in C minor the finiteness of existence as Hölderin's poem demands. That finally a hopeful, conciliatory - though unsure - moment lingers is reflected in the musical means. Many emotions and vagaries are emulated in Mahler's song cycle. The journeyman sets off on his wanderings in order to forget his unhappy liaison and strides through the ups and downs of mixed emotions and painful heartache. Drumrolls and march rhythms reflect the real world and sounds of nature, dissonances and a change between major and minor keys show the way from dreams, reality and feelings. The recording with Mildred Miller and the Columbia Symphony Orchestra under Bruno Walter has achieved reference status and is sure of a place in the TAS Super LP List given out by The Absolute Sound.

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Quicksilver Anthology

Mastered by Joe Reagoso from the Original Capitol Records Tapes w/ Ron McMaster

Along with fellow superstars Jefferson Airplane, Steve Miller Band and The Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service were one of the first Bay Area rock acts that helped usher in the progressive rock/acid rock movement during the height of the Summer Of Love in San Francisco. With its core line-up of David Freiberg, Dino Valenti, Greg Elmore, Gary Duncan, Nicky Hopkins and John Cipollina, this amazing band truly delivered many fine recordings during their successful reign at Capitol Records.

Anthems of the era still resonate today with society issues and world problems as Quicksilver foretold with their classic signature tunes like Fresh Air, What About Me, Hope and Pride Of Man. With the superstar talents that made up this band over the years, it was not uncommon to hear radio stations play entire sides of their revolutionary albums during the dawn of FM and underground radio.

Capitol Records awarded Quicksilver and their huge fan base with a very extensive and amazing Greatest Hits package called Anthology back in 1973. Right from the start you get a healthy three track serving from their first monster release Quicksilver Messenger Service, along with more solid tunes from other fine albums like Happy Trails, Shady Grove, Just For Love, What About Me and others classics.

Out of print for many years, Friday Music has announced the first time 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl release of their classic Capitol Records release Quicksilvers Anthology on Friday Music. This amazing album features 16 of their most important songs from their legendary albums from 1967 through 1973. From the early acid rock sounds of Dinos Song and the 12 minute epic The Fool, to later day hits like the aforementioned Fresh Air, What About Me and Just For Love, this album truly shows the relevance and importance of this sorely missed iconic band.

Mastered impeccably from the original Capitol Records tapes by Joe Reagoso and Ron McMaster, this super limited edition album also boasts the original gatefold cover album art, including the silver on black embossed Quicksilver logo. The two HQ vinyl LPs are also protected by poly lined sleeves, as well as a poly bag to help keep the album cover and albums in great condition.

    Blue Note Reissue

As much as I'd love to relay all kinds of anecdotes about the challenges Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray encounter during the mastering sessions, I witness none. These boys know the sound of the facility and the Van Gelder masters like the backs of their handsBack home a month later, I unpack some test pressings Chad Kassem has sent meI hear the most realistic-sounding drums ever reproduced by my system. It's as though I'm sitting at the point of creation, experiencing the same high that brought such gifted musicians together as one. Steve Hoffman, Kevin Gray, Chad Kassem, and Don MacInnis have done Rudy Van Gelder and his Blue Note artists proud. Jason Victor Serinus, Stereophile, April 2008

I have my two new Blue Note LPs here and as I sit writing this I am listening to the Dexter Gordon, WOW!sitting here listening to this wonderful music, just clean, no background noise, a black background, like the studio that they recorded this in, it is wonderful. The instruments coming out of the sound stage positioned as they were recorded, this is a real treat. Miller Steel, Acoustic Sounds customer

...these first five Acoustic Sounds Blue Note re-issues are pure bop genius...The best news is that Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman were keen enough to do nothing more than gently clean up the masters, bringing us even closer to the hard bop edge. The 45 rpm pressings that I received were all super quiet with every last drop of resolution from the master tapes. I had almost forgotten just how good Paul Chambers and Phil Joe were together as the backbone of these groups. I've always loved this music but I didn't remember it sounding this good! Hank Mobley offers us some brilliant sax bits on one of Kenny Dorham's finest recordings, Whistle Stop and Dexter Gordon's performance blew me away as well. The biggest surprise were the Lee Morgan records. I suggest turning these up loud, since they possess unlimited energy and some hooks that will knock you out. Amazing! Just a small warning: Once you start playing these Blue Note recordings you will be hooked. The good news is that Acoustic Sounds is working on at least 20 more of these jazz gems. So make sure your turntable has a setting for 45 rpm, clean your stylus occassionally, and get ready to be transported to nirvana. - Dan Babineau, Tone Audio, No. 14 2008, www.tonepublications.com

I have just listened, in succession, to my mono and early stereo versions of each LP. I have purchased other similar reissues over the years, but find the engineering and pressing of this 45rpm/180 series to be superior to all to others. This is particularly since I find many new releases to be of inferior quality or handling during manufacture, despite being re-engineered and of heavier vinyl. Barry Paulson, Acoustic Sounds customer

Dexter Gordon connects immediately with the sublime rhythm section of Kenny Drew, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones on this, his second Blue Note album. The material ranges from Drew originals to pieces from Gordon's score for the Los Angeles production of The Connection to stunning performances of the standards The End Of A Love Affair and Smile.
