Old No. 1Guy Clark's debut from 1975 is one of the all time classic country singer-songwriter records. By the time of its release the Texas native had been shopping his tunes in Nashville for a few years and the songs from Old No. 1 were already well aged and often covered. Regardless, though Clark considers himself more a songwriter than a recording artist, nobody holds a candle to these performances. From the rollicking Texas swing of opener Rita Ballou to the finger picked heartbreak of closer Let Him Roll there is not a stinker to be found. Ender's Game SoundtrackENDER'S GAME Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Music Composed by Steve Jablonsky (The Transformers Trilogy, Pain & Gain, Battleship)
In the near future, a hostile alien race called the Formics have attacked Earth. If not for the legendary heroics of International Fleet Commander Mazer
Rackham (Ben Kingsley), all would have been lost. In preparation for the next attack, the highly esteemed Colonel Hyrum Graff (Harrison Ford) and the
International Military are training only the best young minds to find the future Mazer. Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield), a shy but strategically brilliant boy, is
recruited to join the elite. Arriving at Battle School, Ender quickly and easily masters increasingly difficult challenges and simulations, distinguishing
himself and winning respect amongst his peers. Ender is soon ordained by Graff as the military's next great hope, resulting in his promotion to Command
School. Once there, he's trained by Mazer Rackham himself to lead his fellow soldiers into an epic battle that will determine the future of Earth and save
the human race.

ADAD-RVN-2208xMike Cooper & Steve Gunn
FRKWYS Vol. 11 - Contos De LisboaFor the the eleventh volume of FRKWYS, an unrestricted series pairing contemporary
artists with their influential predecessors, gifted guitar squire Steve Gunn meets roving,
radiating legend Mike Cooper in Lisbon, Portugal.
Sharing their vision over lengthy living room guitar sessions and evenings of cold wine
in Fado taverns, Gunn and Cooper created Cantos de Lisboa, an album with variable
vernacular shades and musical forms from Portugal's antiquity.
Cantos means "corner" in Portuguese, as well as "chant" or "song" (this latter meaning
evolved from the Latin antecedent referring to stanzas of verse in poetry). For two artists
whose roots lie in the country blues and its subverted offshoots, the proverbial "corner"
is actually home, the undisturbed spot where music can flourish.
A tranquil interlude for these two travellers to create off-guard improvisations in their
shared style of deconstructed guitar music, Cantos de Lisboa is a curious detail in the
periphery of their snapshot of Portugal.
In his fifty-year-plus career, Cooper's global ventures have transported his music to
exotic locales parallel to Lisbon. 2004's Rayon Hula musically translated the patterned
flora of aloha shirts (Cooper's signature garment) as looped samples of famed Hawaiian
vibraphone player Arthur Lyman for an avant vivified form of exotica.
Rayon Hula signaled Cooper's vital re-emergence as a dexterous alchemist of slide
guitar. Cooper's discography is colored with similar instances of casually conceptual,
improvisatory guitar music, including his 1970 masterpiece Trout Steel (an album Gunn
recalls in Cantos de Lisboa's liner notes as shaping his own ambitions and music).
For his part, Gunn's path to Portugal was compelled by his kinship to Cooper and
his ilk's experimentation with guitar-picked country blues and 70s British folk. Gunn's
extracurricular immersion in free jazz and psychedelia, no doubt influenced by his
Philadelphia upbringing and surroundings, ensures his playing never grits or grids and
always soars to ecstatic heights.
These musical emblems were gracefully memorialized on Gunn's celebrated Time
Off (Paradise of Bachelors, 2013) and across a substantial catalog of solo, duo and
ensemble work that resembles that of a veteran player more than a young guitar
On Cantos de Lisboa, Gunn and Cooper take emotive cues from Fado, the regional
music of Portugal, which is in close plaintive spirit to the blues. A melancholy seeps into
the music, while steering a wide berth from any bummer notes or pastiche. Cooper's
sparse effects toolkit and stately, gliding cadences are nimbly employed, while Gunn's
ashen voice and steady strum lend an intensely organic feel to the album's improvisatory
The latter half of Cantos de Lisboa echoes the "saudade" theme as referenced in
the blissful opening track, Cooper's howl spiriting the Portuguese word that translates
roughly into "loss" or "longing." Saudade is said to be the core feature of Fado music. In
Cantos de Lisboa, Saudade becomes a spirit inhabiting the album's corners, but never
disrupting the musicians' collaborative evocations.
In the hands of these two limitless guitarists, Cantos de Lisboa convenes in an abstract,
almost field recorded take on lap-steel and American Primitive guitar styles. For the
brief idyll, Gunn and Cooper's collaboration is remarkably rich, marking their passage
through Portugal not just as a time to revel in an ancient city, but a time for focused
collaboration and creative consonance.1. Saudade Do Santos-o-Velho

Never Get Out Of These Blues AliveImport
The unparalleled John Lee Hooker recorded Never Get Out Of These Blues Alive within two days in 1971, working together with young Blues stars Van Morrison and Steve Miller, among others. John takes centre stage delivering the hard edged Blues he's known for, whilst giving his fellow musicians enough space to jam along. Stellar performances by Charlie Musselwhite on blues harp and Miller & Elvin Bishop on guitar top off the album.
The title track is simply what Blues is all about: mournful, depressed and loose - epic stuff. Noteworthy is Hooker's laidback rendition of Van Morrison's "T.B. Sheets", of which the original is found on Morrison's debut album Blowin' Your Mind.1. Bumblebee, Bumblebee

Tonight's The NightBy 1975 Young had written some of the most enduring anthems in rock history. But from the slow, tension-building piano opening of Tonight's the Night, he downshifts into darkness and Crazy Horse's folk-country melodies take on a guttural hum that would eventually speak to generations of punk and grunge musicians.
Inspired by the overdose deaths of two of Young's friends, roadie Bruce Berry and guitarist Danny Whitten, the title track (and its closing reprise) is a hypnotic cry of why? Even the relative party songs, Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown and Roll Another Number, fit the album's bus-to-nowhere resignation. -Steve Knopper1. Tonight's The Night

Nobody Knows YouGrammy-nominated bluegrass sensation, The Steep Canyon Rangers proudly present their debut Rounder Records effort Nobody Knows You. Grammy nominated for their collaboration with icon Steve Martin, these personable young musicians are as Steve puts it, "not only great musicians who continue to explore both the new and old styles of bluegrass and bring a fresh energy to the traditions of American music, but they are also really fun on a bus."
Deft musicianship, impeccable songwriting, distinctive vocals, and creative arrangements are just some of the qualities that set The Steep Canyon Rangers apart from the rest of the pack. Unafraid to break the mold, whether taking the unexpected musical turn or bringing home the surprising lyric, it's no wonder that Martin chose them as just the right band to record and tour with. Nobody Knows You is the most adventurous and fully realized accomplishment The Steep Canyon Rangers have achieved to date.
Guitarist Woody Platt's take on Nobody Knows You to No Depression, I think this record is an obvious step for us if you were to go back and listen to all of our records in order. To me, Nobody Knows You has the most depth from start to finish, and I believe that it features our best songwriting to date.
He adds, Although it is a bluegrass album, and we are very proud to be a bluegrass band, there are elements of pop, honky-tonk, jazz and rock and roll all kind of mixed into the album. The variety of the record will hopefully enable us to reach a larger audience of music fans, and not limit it to only bluegrass fans. Compared to our previous discography, I'd say that this record has the best chance to have a broad appeal.1. Nobody Knows You

Fine Art Of Self DestructionJesse Malin segued from a decade as frontman for NYC's D Generation, a band whose glam-metal pose was as ironic as it was misunderstood, to this reincarnation as shrewd, stripped-down Gotham singer-songwriter. Comparisons to Bruce Springsteen have already been floated, but Malin's sensibilities here are as subtly shaded and introspective as the Boss's are broad and declamatory. Midwifed by producer/ex-Whiskeytown frontman Ryan Adams, Malin's affection for the likes of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Steve Earle is obvious, but filtered through a savory, pop-conscious mÉlange of musical textures that evoke everything from Motown to Tex-Mex. Malin's lyrical sense is no less evocative, with simple lines conjuring up worlds of possibilities. It's a debut whose heartfelt country-by-way-of-Delancey-Street songs may bolster notions that irony is indeed dead in the post-9/11 world, but also one whose honesty of voice and purpose ensures the wake will be brief. -Jerry McCulley1. Volume 1: Frozen Ropes and Dying Quails (Awaiting Repress)Rock n' roll vets Scott McCaughey (The Minus 5, R.E.M., Young Fresh Fellows) and Steve Wynn (The Dream Syndicate, Gutterball, Danny & Dusty, Miracle 3) have an unhealthy love for music undermined only by an even more unhealthy love of baseball. The compatriots blend their two passions with The Baseball Project Volume 1: Frozen Ropes and Dying Quails, an album of buzzing guitars and baseball back stories.
The heroes and villains of America's (in)famous pastime are explored with cutting wit and fanboy detail in songs that satisfy both the summer's need for rock anthems and sweltering afternoon double-headers. Drummer Linda Pitmon (Miracle 3, Golden Smog) and R.E.M.'s Peter Buck round out the squad, as they spin tales of ill-fated drinking binges (The Yankee Flipper, The Death of Big Ed Delahanty), near mythical icons (Ted Fucking Williams), folk heroes (Fernando, Satchel Paige Said) and on Gratitude (For Curt Flood), the overlooked man who changed the game.

Sarah Neufeld is a violinist and composer based in MontrÉal, Canada. Best known as a member of Arcade Fire, she is also a founding member of the acclaimed contemporary instrumental ensemble Bell Orchestre and has performed and recorded with many other groups, including The Luyas, Esmerine and Little Scream.
Neufeld began developing pieces for solo violin in a more formal and focused sense in 2011, though she has made improvisation and solo composition part of her process and practice since first picking up the instrument at a young age. Neufeld counts Bela Bartok, Steve Reich, Iva Bittova and Arthur Russell among the formative influences for her solo work, in tandem with an ear for the textures and sensibilities of contemporary electro-acoustic, avant-folk and indie rock music.
Neufeld's debut solo album Hero Brother indeed channels all of the above, flowing through shifting atmospheres and oscillating between restrained, stately ambience, emotive Études, and raw kinetic energy. Small touches of wordless vocalisation, harmonium and piano supplant the violin in a few places. The album was recorded in Berlin by pianist and producer Nils Frahm, with Neufeld's performances captured in a number of locations with site-specific acoustics, including an abandoned geodesic dome, an underground parking garage, and the legendary Studio P4 orchestral recording hall at the broadcast complex of the former GDR.1. Modern StreetsBeat Spacek is the latest project from UK vocalist/producer Steve Spacek, a man who should really need no introduction. With boundless abilities, his work transcends genre and style - instead focusing more on swing, melody, vibe and atmosphere. From his legendary output with the band Spacek - Curvatia (2001), Vintage Hi-Tech (2003); solo work on the cult Sound In Color imprint and collaborations with the late, great J.Dilla; to his under-the-radar Black Pocket project for dBridge's Exit Records and his most recent work with Mark Pritchard as one half of Africa HiTech, his fearless approach to creation has always been progressive and highly original.
Beat Spacek sees him once again take the reigns as a solo artist creating a record that is as much a love letter to the future as it is an ode to the past. Created largely using iPhone and iPad apps, the album once again finds Steve liberated through new technologies, excited by the prospects of "the new" whilst expressing notions of the past. It's a journey through the evolution of modern Britain from a futurist perspective.
Framed against a particular period in the 1980s when Steve was growing up as a young man in New Cross, South East London, Modern Streets is rooted in the duality of the past and the future. Flim-Flams was the club where he first experienced the clash of sounds and styles that characterised South London's racial, ethnic and cultural melting pot. A spot where Punks, Soul Heads, New Romantics, Dread Locks and Skinheads all converged brought together through a love of music and new sounds.
From the paranoid, post-punk, sleng teng musings of I Wanna Know to the nu wave pop-powered love song Inflight Wave, Modern Streets is a direct reflection of that experience, envisioned through the mind of a 21st Century Rudeboy. Ghanaian Highlife is re-imagined in digital form on Tonight; Stand Firm tips its hat to the dancehall with a futuristic rinse; whilst the sub-bass powered anthem Alone in Da Sun draws on the finest elements of dubstep's sonic vocabulary and reworks them into a loose, new age club jam, brimming with soul and charisma.1. It's an epic record that showcases the talent, range, and ambition of this young group, taking in elements of various genres and making them their own. Jason JamesJason James' self-titled debut, due out August 21st on the esteemed New West Records label, introduces a charismatic young artist whose effortless mastery of his chosen style serves as a deeply compelling vehicle for his vibrant creative spirit. The talented Texan writes rousing honky-tonk anthems, heart-tugging ballads and smart, sly-humored country-rock tunes that echo the vintage classics that are his touchstones, and sings them with a level of emotional urgency that makes it clear that he means every word. The 13 original compositions that comprise Jason James make it clear that the artist is making music that's timeless rather than retro, reflecting his interest in adding to country tradition rather than merely emulating it. A stellar supporting cast was recruited to bring James' songs to life: producers John Evans (Hayes Carll, Corb Lund), Keith Gattis (Willie Nelson, Dwight Yoakam) and engineer Steve Christensen (Steve Earle, Destiny's Child) were at the helm, while the virtuosic talents of Dave Roe (Johnny Cash, Dwight Yoakam), Glen Duncan (George Jones, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton), Steve Hinson (Randy Travis) and New West labelmate Robert Ellis can be heard gracing the expansive, 13-song collection.1. The Human Menagerie is the debut studio album by Cockney Rebel. Produced by Neil Harrison, it was released in November 1973. Cockney Rebel's debut album is like waking up from a really weird dream, and discovering that reality is weirder still.
It's remarkable to recall the impact that Cockney Rebel had when they arrived on the scene in 1973 with The Human Menagerie. Wide-eyed British teenagers who had been too young to succumb to early Bolan 'n' Bowie had a hero of their own: Steve Harley.
Harley might not have been the first cultural genius of his age, he was the first who wasn't content to simply zap the prevailing zeitgeist. He very much succeeded. Cockney Rebel's debut has weathered well - it's now considered an art-glam masterpiece.1. Hideaway

Labor Against Waste"What a real self contained, modern day troubadour looks and sounds like. A voice to be reckoned with in the years to come." - American Songwriter There is a fearless quality to the music of new ANTI- signing Christopher Paul Stelling. A voice that sounds both old and young, an effortless yet intricate finger-picking guitar style, and lyrics that are dramatic and intensely confessional. It's a sound that channels the restless spirit of a young man who left home to travel the country, writing haunting and impassioned songs formed by endless nights alone on stage with a guitar, playing to packed houses, other times to nearly empty rooms. Stelling estimates that he's played over four hundred shows in just the past three years. It places him within a longstanding tradition that serves to build both character and vision. Labor Against Waste features Stelling's astonishing guitar work, a melodic finger-picking style influenced in large part by blues legends such as Skip James and Mississippi John, masters like John Fahey, and banjo greats Dock Boggs and Roscoe Holcomb. On top of this soars Stelling's voice, a resonant baritone that calls to mind classic troubadours from Tim Hardin to Steve Earle. Accompanied by an ensemble of stomps, claps, french horn, flugelhorn, kettle drums, string quartet, and a chorus comprised of members from the Low Anthem, in whose studio Stelling recorded the album, Labor Against Waste is the opening statement in what should be a long and storied career.1.Warm Enemy

All We GrowThe debut album from S. Carey, All We Grow, is the result of a young lifetime spent immersed in music. As a band member of Bon Iver from the very beginning, Sean Carey witnessed a flip of his formal training to step firmly into a worldwide-touring rock band. His performance degree in classical percussion from the University of Wisconsin and his love for jazz drumming prepared him for a central role in the inspiring force of the Bon Iver live show.
All We Grow is a convergence of Carey's Waltz For Debby-era Bill Evans inflected jazz tendencies, and traditional rock band experience, taking leads from Mark Hollis' Talk Talk. It also retests the waters of modern classical composition, investigating the moodiness generated by percussive repetition in a manner familiar to fans of Steve Reich. In his downtime on tour with Bon Iver, Sean would spend time composing. During infrequent tour breaks at home he would patiently record these pieces, adding layers eachtime. Two years later, the parts converged to make an album.
For as much room to breathe as Carey allows his compositions, there are incredibly dynamic moments of bombast held right next to moments of subtle depth and texture. Engineered by Jaime Hansen and Brian Joseph, intermittently at home and at April Base (Justin Vernon's studio outside Eau Claire), All We Grow is an all-encompassing headphone experience as intimate as chamber music and as ambitious as a symphony.1. Hive Mind (Pre-Order)HIVE MIND is the new album from THE INTERNET, and is the follow up to 2015's critically acclaimed and Grammy-nominated album Ego Death.
With this new album, THE INTERNET present enormous growth in their creative chemistry and prove they are a five-person force whose singular talents created one phenomenal whole. The album is written and produced entirely by THE INTERNET - Syd (vocalist/songwriter), Matt Martians (producer), Steve Lacy (guitarist/vocalist/songwriter), Patrick Paige II (songwriter/bassist), and Christopher Smith (songwriter/drummer). And it is with a sense of togetherness - not just for them, but for everyone - that the band chose to highlight as a major theme for Hive Mind.
After making a few songs we realized that we really want to use this album to live by example and promote camaraderie amongst young black people, Syd reveals. We realized that we're the only band of our kind. And we want to really solidify ourselves as that, as the best.
With the chaos of the current world considered, all of THE INTERNET wanted to champion good feelings and the joy of following your heart and passions, in addition to using their own positive relationships and experiences to inspire their community. The band unearthed an even deeper purpose as they collaborated on HIVE MIND. The result is not just one of the greatest records in the band s already phenomenal catalog, but is easily one of the best albums of 2018, from five amazing people already leaving an indelible mark on pop music.LP1

Growing up in New York, his neighbors included such friends as Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins. By 1951 he was recording with Miles Davis and other associations in the 1950s included Charles Mingus and two years with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. But all of that was a prelude to his recording 21 brilliant, explorative and frequently explosive albums for Blue Note during 1959-67. While McLean became one of the first jazz musicians of his generation to stretch beyond hard bop into freer explorations inspired by Ornette Coleman, Swing, Swang, Swingin' is a straight ahead affair in which he mostly puts his stamp on standards. Few versions of Let's Face The Music And Dance and I Love You have ever had this much intensity and, when McLean digs into the ballad What's New, he gives it a fiery passion that had never been heard before. Jackie McLean not only swings and swangs but he burns with the urgency, agony and ecstasy of the 1960s.

Left Banke TooBeloved 1968 Lost Classic Available Again After More Than 40 Years!
Sourced from the Original Stereo Master Tapes
The Left Banke was one of the most distinctive pop bands of the 60s, renowned for the unique baroque rock that allowed them to stand out during that heady musical era. While the bands 1967 debut album, and its signature hits Walk Away RenÉe and Pretty Ballerina have long been acknowledged as classics, the bands 1968 sophomore effort The Left Banke Too has maintained a persistent under-the-radar mystique, beloved by a loyal cadre of followers yet little-known by the general public.
The Left Banke Too emerged from a turbulent period of the bands brief but eventful history. Despite the success of their 1967 debut album Walk Away RenÉe/Pretty Ballerina, the Left Bankes lineup splintered soon after its release, with keyboardist and main songwriter Michael Brown exiting the group. His former bandmates Steve Martin, Tom Finn and George Cameron regrouped and rose to the occasion for The Left Banke Too, crafting a musically inventive, emotionally evocative set thats every bit as magnificent as its predecessor.
The trios exquisite vocal interplay and adventurous songwriting are prominent on such intoxicating tracks as Theres Gonna Be a Storm, Goodbye Holly, Dark Is the Bark and the Brown-penned Desiree, which is widely regarded as one of the groups greatest studio achievements. Several of The Left Banke Toos tracks also feature backing vocals by a young Steven Tyler, several years before he achieved stardom with Aerosmith.
