Songs In The Key Of Life (Awaiting Repress)

No. 56 On Rolling Stone's List Of 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time

    2x 180 Gram Vinyl + Bonus 7-Inch EP

Two years in the making, Songs In The Key Of Life is a groundbreaking sonic masterpiece that brilliantly brings together Stevie Wonder's genius for pop music, his bold experimentation, and his lyrical humanitarian concerns. Released on the Tamla label by Motown in late September 1976, the 21-song album remains an immeasurable influential recording.

A critically acclaimed double-LP that includes a four-song bonus EP and a 24-page booklet, Songs In The Key Of Life is the first album by an American artist, and the first double-album, to debut at No. 1 on Billboard's Pop Album Chart. The album won the Grammy® for Album of the Year; Wonder also won for Producer of the Year; Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male; and Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male. The latter was awarded for "I Wish," the first single from the album, which hit No. 1 Pop and R&B. "Sir Duke," the follow-up single, was No. 1 on both charts as well, while "Another Star" and "As" were each Top 40 hits on the Pop and R&B charts; "Another Star" was also a top 3 club chart hit. Among the album's many other notable tracks, "Isn't She Lovely" was a hit without being released as a single; "Pastime Paradise" became the basis of Coolio's 1995 rap hit "Gangsta's Paradise," a No. 1 hit in many countries worldwide. A cover of "As," by George Michael and Mary J. Blige, was a top 5 hit in the U.K. in 1999. That same year, "I Wish" was prominently sampled in the No. 1 hit by Will Smith, "Wild Wild West."

Songs In The Key Of Life, with Wonder and his band Wonderlove accompanied by all-star musicians and singers, is No. 56 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of "500 Greatest Albums of All Time." It is one of the few albums to be awarded Diamond status by the RIAA, for sales of more than ten million copies in the U.S.

Wonder plays keyboards, harmonica, and percussion here and the album includes the original studio version of Fingertips, whose live version (Fingertips Pt. 2) would become his first major national hit a year later. Both Sides of the Gun

With the release of his seventh studio album, Both Sides of the Gun, Ben Harper offers his signature mix of rock, soul and folk music, while also venturing into new territory. I was hoping I could come back to the root of my earlier records, the sparseness and intimacy, he says, and also branch out further in a produced sound than ever before. From the blazing Curtis Mayfield/Stevie Wonder-style funk of Black Rain to the gentle sway of Morning Yearning to the full-on power ballad Waiting for You, the eighteen songs on Both Sides Of The Gun reveal a master stylist at the peak of his game. Son Little, the singer and songwriter born Aaron Livingston, is the easygoing musical alchemist of our time. He is a conjurer, and much like those of his heroes Stevie Wonder and Jimi Hendrix, his songs are deconstructions of the diaspora of American R&B. Deftly he weaves different eras of the sound-blues, soul, gospel, rock and roll-through his own unique vision, never forced, always smooth, each note a tributary on the flowing river of rhythm and blues. And now, with his second full-length album, New Magic, he has delivered a profound statement, a cohesive creation that captures the diverse spirit of American music in a fresh and modern way.

The song that serves as the album's true centerpiece is Blue Magic, a Philly Soul inspired number deconstructed almost like a rap song or the best of production savants like J Dilla or Madlib, complete with chiming glockenspiel bells and old school female backing vocals. The song has the appeal of an instant classic. On the heels of his 2015 self-titled debut and the 5-song EP, Songs I Forgot, that came before it, Son Little found his reach steadily growing. His song Lay Down had been streamed over seven million times, he had toured the world with artists as diverse as Leon Bridges, Kelis, Mumford & Sons, Portual. The Man and Shakey Graves in addition to his own headlining runs, and also became a Grammy Award winning producer, earning a 2016 Best Roots Performance award for his work on Mavis Staples.

    Tribute to Uncle Ray

    Import

Wonder's second LP, recorded and released when he was only 12 years old, is a tribute to Ray Charles. As the original liner notes state, Little Stevie Wonder, Tamla's 11-year-old musical genius, is blind, a similarity he shares with a famed musician and vocalist of today. Though this is perhaps not the most subtle of tribute albums and a clear cash in attempt from Motown, who were still looking for a way to market their new-found talent, the results are still fantastic. Little Stevie powers his way through a grip of Charles' classics as well as some original songs done in the Charles style and while the LP failed to score a hit, it's an enjoyable listen that shows a glimpse of the super star talent that was soon to emerge.

    Mother's Milk

1989's Mother's Milk is the album that broke the Red Hot Chili Peppers into the rock mainstream. Despite suffering the loss of drummer Jack Irons and guitarist Hillel Slovak a year earlier, founding members Anthony Kiedis and Flea found exceptional replacements in Chad Smith and John Frusciante. A cover of Stevie Wonder's Higher Ground and a tribute to Slovak, Knock Me Down, were both big MTV successes, as were such other highlights as Taste the Pain (featured prominently in the movie Say Anything), Good Time Boys, Subway to Venus, Magic Johnson and Sexy Mexican Maid.

    Street Songs

The late Rick James was as notorious for his wild lifestyle as he was for his music, mixing pop, rock, R&B and sleazy funk. Street Songs, his 1981 album for Motown features his most enduring hit, Super Freak, sampled most famously on MC Hammers Grammy Award winning U Can't Touch This, as well as by Jay-Z on the track Kingdome Come. Boasting cameos by Stevie Wonder on harmonica and The Temptations on backing vocals (who included Ricks uncle, Melvin Frank), the album is loosely a concept piece about ladies of the night. Other highlights include Give It to Me Baby, Fire and Desire (a duet with Teena Marie) and Ghetto Life.
