    Stills Lit Through

Stills Lit Through offers the first comprehensive body of work from
    musician and visual artist Tallesen.

Hailing from the Hudson Valley of New York, Tallesen - born
Cayman Johnson - describes Stills as a response to the
"continuous flexibility of the physical setting by the additive of
sound." A reference to his joyful erasure of the distinction
    between music and experience.

The twelve songs of Stills Lit Through conjure an eidolon of
melodies painted with watercolor brushstrokes both calm
("Glenticast") and frenetic ("Emmel"). To our ears, this closely
characterizes Johnson's work as a visual artist.

The collection when taken as a whole is wonderfully consistent.
We hear echoes of Autechre's corporeal maneuvers (bass as lead
voice, plasticity of foreground vs. background), but, if you dig out
the provenance of Johnson's nom de plume, you really start to
understand how the melodic through-lines of the record operate
    on a more illustrative level.

What appears to you as a macro-level core 'feeling' about the
record is illusively varied, consisting of insanely lush song nodes
that subtly and endlessly rotate and shift. It is a music that is both
ultra beautiful (Strike Silver, Love Green) and invested in a core
belief dealing with the materiality of musical sound itself
(Plasticized Fsa). It's not the house in which melodies are stored,
it's the crypt of inspiration from which melodies emerge.

Rhythmically, Stills encourages ephemera towards the creation of
a seductively creaky, silvery universe with an unreliable sense of
gravity. The result is hallucinatory in that the album
comprehensively experiences like volumes among volumes of
things change, but in half-speed. "The music is saturated with
information for it to remain flexible to its surroundings," describes
Cayman, an ode to feeling "ambiance with a modern degree of
    attention."

Thus we enter the world of Stills Lit Through, a comprehensive
portrait of young Cayman Johnson's enigmatic, sensual world-building music.

    Crosby Stills and Nash: Demos

12-Song Collection of Previously Unreleased Demos from 1968 to 1971 Offers a Behind-The-Scenes Glimpse at the Earliest Days of One of Rocks Most Legendary Partnerships!

After four decades as three together, the creative partnership of David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash is one of the most enduring and influential in contemporary music. This compilation of previously unreleased material takes an unprecedented look at the earliest days of their collaboration with 12 demos from 1968 to 1971 of destined-to-be-classic songs that would later be featured on CSNs studio albums and solo titles. While a number of demos feature members performing solo (and one finds them joined by Neil Young), the set opens with the trio harmonizing on Marrakesh Express, recorded four months before their self-titled debut LP was released in 1969. Other rarities include seminal takes on Almost Cut My Hair, Chicago, Long Time Gone, Love The One Youre With and DÉjà Vu.

The collection, produced by Graham Nash and Joel Bernstein, reaches as far back as 68 with Stills My Love Is A Gentle Thing, and also features his solo classic Love The One Youre With. Highlights include CSN harmonizing on a January 69 take on Marrakesh Express, Crosby and Stills on Long Time Gone, and Crosby and Nash joined by Neil Young on Music Is Love (a song later featured on Crosbys solo debut If I Could Only Remember My Name). Among the other highlights are three songs that would appear on Nashs solo debut, 1971s Songs For Beginners, including Chicago and Sleep Song, and Crosby performing unaccompanied on Almost Cut My Hair and DÉjà Vu.

On some of these songs you really hear us becoming a band, trying out different ideas in our songwriting and singing and harmonies. It really is a time capsule. Graham Nash

As a drummer, flutist and keyboardist, Joe Vitale's first album featured his own playing on multiple instruments. Augmented by guitar fireworks of former band mate Joe Walsh, Rick Derringer and Phil Keaggy, Vitale delivered an album filled to the brim with catchy rhythms and playful songwriting. Ron and Howard Albert produced the album, whom were also responsible for Derek and the Dominoes' Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, the Allman Brothers' Eat A Peach, and other legendary albums. After recording Rollercoaster Weekend, Vitale would join the Stills-Young band and tour with the classic Crosby, Stills & Nash line-up, as well as the Eagles.

    Manassas

Between 1970 and 1972, Stephen Stills was busy playing with Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young and working on a series of solo albums. In addition to all this activity he led the super group that appears on this stunning release. Manassas finds Stills and company (Chris Hillman, Dallas Taylor and Al Perkins among others) at the intersection of rock, folk, country and blues. Distinctive styles are noticeable song by song, yet it is the strength and credibility of the mixture that makes Manassas such a great overall experience. The first fourth of the album focuses on '60s rock with Afro-Cuban overtones, followed by a batch of country and bluegrass-oriented material. The folk-rock track It Doesn't Matter kicks off the third section and the final section wraps the set up with the rootsy groove of Blues Man, a tribute to Jimi Hendrix. Manassas is a rich and varied collection that is as sophisticated and complex as it is earthy and easy to listen to.

Recorded in 1975, Zuma exudes both a sense of focus and a tentative optimism. Barstool Blues, Don't Cry No Tears, and Drive Back are terse, punchy rockers, while Danger Bird and Cortez the Killer are extended guitar workouts in the grand Crazy Horse tradition. And the two acoustic entries--Pardon My Heart and Through My Sails (the latter was recorded with Crosby, Stills & Nash)--are absolutely gorgeous. Danger In The Club

While Danger In The Club, the follow-up to Palma Violets' barnstorming
debut 180, certainly trades on the primal and joyous hook-laden
rock of their debut, their sophomore LP finds the band with a new
sonic looseness, revealing far more expansive influences than the
still-quite-young quartet had on their debut.

This is the sound of a preternaturally talented group of musicians and
songwriters continuing to develop, while keeping their focus squarely
on the type of well-crafted, singalong anthems that have earned them

    Bump City

Bump City is the second album by the long living Bay Area based Soul Funk group Tower Of Power, released in 1972. Tower Of Power are best known for their funky Soul sound highlighted by a powerful horn section and precisely syncopated bass-guitar lines.

One of their biggest hits came off the album: You're Still A Young Man, recorded in Memphis and with Rick Stevens as lead vocalist. The production and arrangements were much improved over the debut album East Bay Grease from 1970, as was the engineering and overall technical quality. Their lines were crisper, the unison and ensemble passages much sharper, and they were beginning to round into shape.

The album was the first to make an impact in the band's early days, and paved the way to their mid Seventies success with subsequent albums like their self titled third album and Back To Oakland from 1974, both of which feature Lenny Williams on lead vocals.

    Can't Get Enough

Two time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Stephen Stills and five-time Grammy nominated guitarist, songwriter and singer Kenny Wayne Shepherd may be separated by a musical generation, but they are bonded by a mutual love of the blues. When they joined forces with famed Chicago rock/blues keyboardist Barry Goldberg and formed The Rides, their extraordinary collective histories proved to be unparalleled - blazing a 21st Century trail for the historical American art form.

Launching an exciting new chapter in each of their storied careers, the trio's new band is further powered by the explosive rhythm section of bassist Kevin McCormick and Shepherd's longtime drummer Chris Layton (also a veteran of the legendary Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble).

Their 429 Records debut, Can't Get Enough features the new single Don't Want Lies and showcases a hard hitting mix of Stills-Goldberg-Shepherd penned blues/rock originals as well as some classic blues tunes. Also included are brilliant interpretations of Muddy Waters, Honey Bee, Elmore James & Talk To Me Baby and blistering twists on Stills' favorite Neil Young anthem & Rockin' In The Free World as well as the Iggy Pop & The Stooges early 70s

Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 2, Vocalise, 2 Pieces For 6 Hands, Morceau De Fantaisie

French star pianist Alexandre Tharaud takes on the blockbuster 'Rach 2' concerto in a thrilling performance with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Russian maestro Alexander Vedernikov. It is coupled with more intimate Rachmaninov for piano six-hands (for which Alexandre is flanked by Alexander Melnikov and Aleksandar Madar) and the icing on the cake: a sublime Vocalise in the original version for voice and piano, with pure-voiced French soprano Sabine Devieilhe.

Alexandre Tharaud's recorded catalogue is large and eclectic, but this is the first time he has devoted an entire album to Russian repertoire - specifically to the music of Sergei Rachmaninov. "I was still quite young when I first played this concerto," explains Tharaud. "I adored it Rachmaninov's virtuosity really appeals to young pianists. Today, of course I'm still enthralled by the concerto's virtuosity, but now I'm more interested in its dark shadows: the sense of despair, of staring into the abyss. My interpretation of Rachmaninov has changed a lot over the years."

    On The Beach

On the Beach was Neil Young's first studio album after Harvest had transformed him into a mainstream superstar two years before. Less mournful but still haunting, the album is basically Young's rejection of rock stardom and what had become of the counterculture, covering a range of subjects, including Richard Nixon and Patty Hearst (the epic Ambulance Blues), his affair with actress Carrie Snodgrass (Motion Pictures), and, most famously, years before it became chic to do so, Charles Manson (the rocking Revolution Blues). Vampire Blues, meanwhile, seemed to be about all those topics, as well as Young himself. On the Beach would nevertheless eventually come to be reappraised as a rock culture masterpiece. -Bill Holdship

    2014 Forest Hills Drive

    J. Cole, the Grammy nominated and platinum selling rapper, has released details on his third full length LP 2014 Forest Hills Drive via Roc Nation / Columbia. The album name is derived from the address of his actual childhood home in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The project is a meditation on the value of love relative to worldly success. The 2014 Forest Hills Drive house marked a change for a young Cole and it spawned his path in rap. With an elevated sense of domestic pride (from trailer park to tree-lined street) to actually having privacy for the first time (his own room) this proved an instrumental time and the story flourishes from there. The house, eventually foreclosed on when Cole was still too young to help, was recently purchased back by him this past fall (his first property purchase) and he promptly invited fans to come and listen to the album at the end of November before anyone (including his label and press.)

    J. Cole chose to forgo a traditional industry album rollout in order to have it be a more personal experience for his fans. He wanted the album to be ingested as a whole. He wanted to limit pre-album hype and context. There were no singles released leading up to release and no early promotion to garner press. He wanted it to be pure for fans and he wanted the tale to be heard by them first and the perception to be personal and theirs alone.

On their second release, Montreal's The Stills are back with a refreshed outlook and bold new take on their unique sound. Songwriter and drummer Dave Hamelin dropped his drumsticks to share vocal and guitar duties with Tim Fletcher. Also, touring keyboardist Liam O'Neil is now a permanent member, adding classic Hammond organ and lush piano to the new sound. Re-invigorated, the band invited friends and fellow Canadians to plug in and contribute. The resulting album is fearless, filled with brutally honest songwriting and a big, organic rock sound. Neil Young might have called this the ragged glory of a pop-rock band. Gone are the boys. This album has stubble.

    Ladies Of The Canyon

Joni Mitchell's third release found her moving away from the wistful folk of her debut and Clouds, branching out into the progressive pop and jazz elements that would define her best work. The bright, poppy Big Yellow Taxi, the album's single, is here, as is her epoch-defining Woodstock, a soulful, stirring song about the 1969 rock festival that was later covered by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. But the material on Ladies Of The Canyon is uniformly strong, demonstrating the mature style and vision that made her one of the leading voices of the '70s. Ladies Of The Canyon was Mitchell's first classic album, one that helped pave the way for its watershed successor, Blue.

and Young while Faust producer Uwe Nettlebeck makes a guest appearance in the
    control room.

    Attack On Memory

In 2009, Cleveland, OH's Dylan Baldi began writing and recording lo-fi power-pop songs in his parents basement, dubbing the project Cloud Nothings. His music quickly started making the Internet rounds, and fans and critics alike took note of his pithy songcraft, infectiously catchy melodies, and youthful enthusiasm. Baldi soon released a string of 7s, a split cassette, and an EP before putting out Turning On, a compilation spanning about a years worth of work, on Carpark in 2010. January 2011 saw the release of Cloud Nothings self-titled debut LP, which, put next to Turning On, found Baldi cleaning up his lo-fi aesthetic, pairing his tales of affinitive confusion with a more pristine aural clarity. In the interval since the release of Cloud Nothings, Baldi has toured widely and put a great deal of focus on his live show, a detail that heavily shapes the music of this, his follow-up album, Attack on Memory.

After playing the same sets nightly for months on end, Baldi saw the rigidity of his early work, and he wanted to create arrangements that would allow for more improvisation and variability when played on the road. To accomplish this desired malleability, the entire band decamped to Chicago, where the album was recorded with Steve Albini, and all lent a hand in the songwriting process. The product of these sessions is a record boasting features that, even at a glance, mark a sea change in the bands sound: higher fidelity, a track clocking in at almost nine minutes, an instrumental, and an overall more plaintive air. The songs move along fluidly, and Baldi sounds assured as he brings his vocals up in the mix, allowing himself to hold out long notes and put some grain into his voice. Minor key melodies abound, drums emphatically contribute much more than mere timekeeping, and the guitar work is much more adventurous than that of previous releases.

For all of early Cloud Nothings fun and fervor, Baldi admits that it never sounded like most of the music he listens to. With Attack on Memory, he wanted to remedy this anomaly, and in setting out to do so, Baldi and Co. have created an album that shows vast growth in a still very young band.

    Givin' It Back

Givin' It Back is the ninth album released by The Isley Brothers on their T-Neck imprint in 1971. After years of having white Rock acts covering their most famed material, particularly, Shout and Twist And Shout, the Isleys decided to do the same to music made famous by white artists such as Stephen Stills, Eric Burdon and Neil Young.

Among the songs they covered were Spill The Wine, Love The One You're With, the social commentary medley of Ohio and Machine Gun (from Jimi Hendrix), Fire And Rain by James Taylor and Bob Dylan's Lay Lady Lay. The Isleys' perseverance paid off when their covers of Love The One You're With, Lay Lady Lay and Spill The Wine became charted hits. Bill Withers plays guitar on the Isleys' version of his Cold Bologna.

    Gone From Danger

Although it might appear that Joan Baez has had an uphill struggle in her career as an interpretive singer in a popular music field dominated by singer/songwriters, in fact she has kept her music fresh over the years by seeking out successive generations of upcoming writers and championing their work. In the 1960s, that might have meant Bob Dylan and Richard Farina, for instance, but 30 years later she is still finding new work by young artists and popularizing it, even if they also perform the songs themselves. On her 1997 album, Gone From Danger, those songwriters are Dar Williams, Sinead Lohan and Richard shindell, each of whom contributes multiple songs, as well as Betty Elders and Mark Addison. They provide her with a host of new social issues to tackle as well, among them pedophilia (Elder's heartbreaking Crack In The Mirror) and immigration (Shindell's caustic Fishing). As usual, she proves herself a superior interpreter, intelligently presenting the complex, mature concerns of the songwriters, whether the subjects have political or emotional resonance (or both).
