Stills Lit ThroughStills Lit Through offers the first comprehensive body of work from
musician and visual artist Tallesen.
Hailing from the Hudson Valley of New York, Tallesen - born
Cayman Johnson - describes Stills as a response to the
"continuous flexibility of the physical setting by the additive of
sound." A reference to his joyful erasure of the distinction
between music and experience.
The twelve songs of Stills Lit Through conjure an eidolon of
melodies painted with watercolor brushstrokes both calm
("Glenticast") and frenetic ("Emmel"). To our ears, this closely
characterizes Johnson's work as a visual artist.
The collection when taken as a whole is wonderfully consistent.
We hear echoes of Autechre's corporeal maneuvers (bass as lead
voice, plasticity of foreground vs. background), but, if you dig out
the provenance of Johnson's nom de plume, you really start to
understand how the melodic through-lines of the record operate
on a more illustrative level.
What appears to you as a macro-level core 'feeling' about the
record is illusively varied, consisting of insanely lush song nodes
that subtly and endlessly rotate and shift. It is a music that is both
ultra beautiful (Strike Silver, Love Green) and invested in a core
belief dealing with the materiality of musical sound itself
(Plasticized Fsa). It's not the house in which melodies are stored,
it's the crypt of inspiration from which melodies emerge.
Rhythmically, Stills encourages ephemera towards the creation of
a seductively creaky, silvery universe with an unreliable sense of
gravity. The result is hallucinatory in that the album
comprehensively experiences like volumes among volumes of
things change, but in half-speed. "The music is saturated with
information for it to remain flexible to its surroundings," describes
Cayman, an ode to feeling "ambiance with a modern degree of

Crosby Stills and Nash: Demos12-Song Collection of Previously Unreleased Demos from 1968 to 1971 Offers a Behind-The-Scenes Glimpse at the Earliest Days of One of Rocks Most Legendary Partnerships!
After four decades as three together, the creative partnership of David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash is one of the most enduring and influential in contemporary music. This compilation of previously unreleased material takes an unprecedented look at the earliest days of their collaboration with 12 demos from 1968 to 1971 of destined-to-be-classic songs that would later be featured on CSNs studio albums and solo titles. While a number of demos feature members performing solo (and one finds them joined by Neil Young), the set opens with the trio harmonizing on Marrakesh Express, recorded four months before their self-titled debut LP was released in 1969. Other rarities include seminal takes on Almost Cut My Hair, Chicago, Long Time Gone, Love The One Youre With and DÉjà Vu.
The collection, produced by Graham Nash and Joel Bernstein, reaches as far back as 68 with Stills My Love Is A Gentle Thing, and also features his solo classic Love The One Youre With. Highlights include CSN harmonizing on a January 69 take on Marrakesh Express, Crosby and Stills on Long Time Gone, and Crosby and Nash joined by Neil Young on Music Is Love (a song later featured on Crosbys solo debut If I Could Only Remember My Name). Among the other highlights are three songs that would appear on Nashs solo debut, 1971s Songs For Beginners, including Chicago and Sleep Song, and Crosby performing unaccompanied on Almost Cut My Hair and DÉjà Vu.
On some of these songs you really hear us becoming a band, trying out different ideas in our songwriting and singing and harmonies. It really is a time capsule. Graham Nash1. Marrakesh Express Crosby, Stills & Nash

As a drummer, flutist and keyboardist, Joe Vitale's first album featured his own playing on multiple instruments. Augmented by guitar fireworks of former band mate Joe Walsh, Rick Derringer and Phil Keaggy, Vitale delivered an album filled to the brim with catchy rhythms and playful songwriting. Ron and Howard Albert produced the album, whom were also responsible for Derek and the Dominoes' Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, the Allman Brothers' Eat A Peach, and other legendary albums. After recording Rollercoaster Weekend, Vitale would join the Stills-Young band and tour with the classic Crosby, Stills & Nash line-up, as well as the Eagles.1. Roller Coaster Weekend

ManassasBetween 1970 and 1972, Stephen Stills was busy playing with Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young and working on a series of solo albums. In addition to all this activity he led the super group that appears on this stunning release. Manassas finds Stills and company (Chris Hillman, Dallas Taylor and Al Perkins among others) at the intersection of rock, folk, country and blues. Distinctive styles are noticeable song by song, yet it is the strength and credibility of the mixture that makes Manassas such a great overall experience. The first fourth of the album focuses on '60s rock with Afro-Cuban overtones, followed by a batch of country and bluegrass-oriented material. The folk-rock track It Doesn't Matter kicks off the third section and the final section wraps the set up with the rootsy groove of Blues Man, a tribute to Jimi Hendrix. ZumaRecorded in 1975, Zuma exudes both a sense of focus and a tentative optimism. Danger In The ClubWhile Danger In The Club, the follow-up to Palma Violets' barnstorming
debut 180, certainly trades on the primal and joyous hook-laden
rock of their debut, their sophomore LP finds the band with a new
sonic looseness, revealing far more expansive influences than the
still-quite-young quartet had on their debut.
This is the sound of a preternaturally talented group of musicians and
songwriters continuing to develop, while keeping their focus squarely
on the type of well-crafted, singalong anthems that have earned them
the adoration of fans and critics. Produced by the legendary John

OVSE-MOV-1244xTower Of Power
Bump City is the second album by the long living Bay Area based Soul Funk group Tower Of Power, released in 1972. Tower Of Power are best known for their funky Soul sound highlighted by a powerful horn section and precisely syncopated bass-guitar lines.
One of their biggest hits came off the album: You're Still A Young Man, recorded in Memphis and with Rick Stevens as lead vocalist. The production and arrangements were much improved over the debut album East Bay Grease from 1970, as was the engineering and overall technical quality. Their lines were crisper, the unison and ensemble passages much sharper, and they were beginning to round into shape.
The album was the first to make an impact in the band's early days, and paved the way to their mid Seventies success with subsequent albums like their self titled third album and Back To Oakland from 1974, both of which feature Lenny Williams on lead vocals.1. You Got To Funkifize

Can't Get EnoughTwo time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Stephen Stills and five-time Grammy nominated guitarist, songwriter and singer Kenny Wayne Shepherd may be separated by a musical generation, but they are bonded by a mutual love of the blues. When they joined forces with famed Chicago rock/blues keyboardist Barry Goldberg and formed The Rides, their extraordinary collective histories proved to be unparalleled - blazing a 21st Century trail for the historical American art form.
Launching an exciting new chapter in each of their storied careers, the trio's new band is further powered by the explosive rhythm section of bassist Kevin McCormick and Shepherd's longtime drummer Chris Layton (also a veteran of the legendary Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble).
Their 429 Records debut, Can't Get Enough features the new single Don't Want Lies and showcases a hard hitting mix of Stills-Goldberg-Shepherd penned blues/rock originals as well as some classic blues tunes. Also included are brilliant interpretations of Muddy Waters, Honey Bee, Elmore James & Talk To Me Baby and blistering twists on Stills' favorite Neil Young anthem & Rockin' In The Free World as well as the Iggy Pop & The Stooges early 70s

Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 2, Vocalise, 2 Pieces For 6 Hands, Morceau De FantaisieFrench star pianist Alexandre Tharaud takes on the blockbuster 'Rach 2' concerto in a thrilling performance with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Russian maestro Alexander Vedernikov. It is coupled with more intimate Rachmaninov for piano six-hands (for which Alexandre is flanked by Alexander Melnikov and Aleksandar Madar) and the icing on the cake: a sublime Vocalise in the original version for voice and piano, with pure-voiced French soprano Sabine Devieilhe.
Alexandre Tharaud's recorded catalogue is large and eclectic, but this is the first time he has devoted an entire album to Russian repertoire - specifically to the music of Sergei Rachmaninov. "I was still quite young when I first played this concerto," explains Tharaud. "I adored it Rachmaninov's virtuosity really appeals to young pianists. Today, of course I'm still enthralled by the concerto's virtuosity, but now I'm more interested in its dark shadows: the sense of despair, of staring into the abyss. My interpretation of Rachmaninov has changed a lot over the years."1. Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 18: I. Moderato

Here I AmMarquise Knox is a once-in-a-generation type of talent. And, man, are traditional blues lovers lucky he's decided to pursue straight-up real blues. Marquise has the voice, the songwriting talent, the guitar chops, the showmanship and the determination to very likely be a success in any number of styles of music. But for Marquise, it's nothing but the blues. Not the guitar hero, pyrotechnic licks blues. Not the gimmicky, tired, Sweet Home Chicago meets Mustang Sally predictable blues. No, Marquise almost seems to be literally channeling the certain-something energies and nuances of a Howlin' Wolf or Muddy Waters or Lightnin' Hopkins. In fact, when you listen to Marquise - 19 years old when he recorded this title - you get the sense that this is what those masters must have sounded like as young men. Marquise's blues are so transparent and bare. It's so easy to feel his music as totally legitimate. That's above all what makes it so appealing. That's what makes Marquise Knox special. He's the whole package. A throwback blues master on the rise. Anybody believe in reincarnation?
As you'd expect from somebody still so young, Marquise's talents have matured immeasurably since his 2009 APO debut, Man Child, recorded when he was 16. And that was a really good record. On Man Child, Marquise shared the guitar duties with Michael Burks, a fiercely explosive and powerful guitarist. For his new record, Marquise doesn't need the guitar help, and Here I Am doesn't want for even a little power and punch. Marquise's guitar skills have improved tenfold. Seriously. And his voice is, well, three years richer. To say that this record sounds unlike anything any other 19 year old is releasing in 2011 is indisputable. To say that it may be unlike anything anybody is releasing in 2011 might also be true.
When Man Child hit the market in 2009, blues lovers freaked out partly because of how young Marquise was to be sounding like such an aged veteran. Well, he's still awfully young, but this time around, the focus ought to be entirely on just how incredible a bluesman Marquise Knox is, age aside.

On The BeachOn the Beach was Neil Young's first studio album after Harvest had transformed him into a mainstream superstar two years before. Less mournful but still haunting, the album is basically Young's rejection of rock stardom and what had become of the counterculture, covering a range of subjects, including Richard Nixon and Patty Hearst (the epic Ambulance Blues), his affair with actress Carrie Snodgrass (Motion Pictures), and, most famously, years before it became chic to do so, Charles Manson (the rocking Revolution Blues). Vampire Blues, meanwhile, seemed to be about all those topics, as well as Young himself. On the Beach would nevertheless eventually come to be reappraised as a rock culture masterpiece. -Bill Holdship1. Walk On

2014 Forest Hills DriveJ. Cole, the Grammy nominated and platinum selling rapper, has released details on his third full length LP 2014 Forest Hills Drive via Roc Nation / Columbia. The album name is derived from the address of his actual childhood home in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The project is a meditation on the value of love relative to worldly success. The 2014 Forest Hills Drive house marked a change for a young Cole and it spawned his path in rap. With an elevated sense of domestic pride (from trailer park to tree-lined street) to actually having privacy for the first time (his own room) this proved an instrumental time and the story flourishes from there. The house, eventually foreclosed on when Cole was still too young to help, was recently purchased back by him this past fall (his first property purchase) and he promptly invited fans to come and listen to the album at the end of November before anyone (including his label and press.)
J. Cole chose to forgo a traditional industry album rollout in order to have it be a more personal experience for his fans. He wanted the album to be ingested as a whole. He wanted to limit pre-album hype and context. There were no singles released leading up to release and no early promotion to garner press. He wanted it to be pure for fans and he wanted the tale to be heard by them first and the perception to be personal and theirs alone.LP 1

Without FeathersOn their second release, Montreal's The Stills are back with a refreshed outlook and bold new take on their unique sound. Songwriter and drummer Dave Hamelin dropped his drumsticks to share vocal and guitar duties with Tim Fletcher. Also, touring keyboardist Liam O'Neil is now a permanent member, adding classic Hammond organ and lush piano to the new sound. Re-invigorated, the band invited friends and fellow Canadians to plug in and contribute. The resulting album is fearless, filled with brutally honest songwriting and a big, organic rock sound. Ladies Of The CanyonJoni Mitchell's third release found her moving away from the wistful folk of her debut and Clouds, branching out into the progressive pop and jazz elements that would define her best work. The bright, poppy Big Yellow Taxi, the album's single, is here, as is her epoch-defining Woodstock, a soulful, stirring song about the 1969 rock festival that was later covered by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. But the material on Ladies Of The Canyon is uniformly strong, demonstrating the mature style and vision that made her one of the leading voices of the '70s. Both Sides of the SkyBoth Sides Of The Sky presents 13 studio recordings including 10 which have never before been released. All but two of these studio recordings were made during a fertile period between January 1968 and 1970. Jimi's mastery and use of the studio as a proving ground for new songs resulted in a growing collection of extraordinary material. This album completes a trilogy of albums [with Valleys Of Neptune and People, Hell & Angels] presenting the best and most significant unissued studio recordings remaining in the Hendrix archive. The songs include fascinating alternate versions of Stepping Stone, Lover Man and Hear My Train A Comin' as well as recordings where Jimi is joined by special guests Johnny Winter and Stephen Stills. Both Sides Of The Sky was mixed by Eddie Kramer, the engineer for all of Hendrix's albums throughout the guitarist's lifetime, and produced by Janie Hendrix, Kramer and John McDermott.
Mannish Boy - The first ever studio session by the group Hendrix would christen as his Band Of Gypsys. Hendrix, Cox & Miles shared a love for the blues as this driving, uptempo reworking of Mannish Boy by Muddy Waters makes clear.
Lover Man - Just two weeks before their triumphant New Year's concerts at the Fillmore East in NYC [yielding both 1970's Band Of Gypsys and 2016's sequel Machine Gun], Hendrix gathered with Cox and Miles to cut this dynamic rendition of what had become a favorite concert staple.
Stepping Stone - A totally unique take on this Hendrix favorite, with Jimi showcasing both blues and country styled licks atop a relentless, galloping beat.
$20 Fine -Stephen Stills joined Jimi, Mitch Mitchell and Buddy Miles Express keyboardist Duane Hitchings at this September 1969 session. With Stephen handling lead vocals and organ, Jimi added multiple guitar parts to this rollicking Stills original.
Power Of Soul - This 1970 studio session came three weeks after the Band Of Gypsys concerts at the Fillmore East. While a live version remains one of the highpoints of Band Of Gypsys, Jimi never released a studio version during his lifetime. For this album, we present the mix that Hendrix and Kramer prepared of the complete song at Electric Lady on August 22, 1970.
Jungle - The influence of Curtis Mayfield can be heard here as Jimi expands on the Villanova Junction Blues theme he made famous by its inclusion in the 1970 Woodstock documentary.
Things I Used To Do - Jimi is joined for this rendition of Guitar Slim's blues classic by Johnny Winter. Jimi's trademark guitar work and Winter's deft slide playing weaves in and around the foundation set by bassist Billy Cox and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young drummer Dallas Taylor.
Georgia Blues - Jimi reunited with some old friends from his pre-Experience days. Lonnie Youngblood, with whom Hendrix played in R&B groups like Curtis Knight & The Squires, voiced this superb twelve bar blues neatly underpinned by Hendrix's sublime rhythm and lead guitar work.
Sweet Angel - With Axis: Bold As Love only just released, Jimi immediately turned his focus to recording what would become Electric Ladyland. This gorgeous, instrumental reading of Angel,, features Jimi on guitar, bass and vibraphone joined by Mitch Mitchell.
Woodstock - Stephen Stills came to this session fresh from having visited Joni Mitchell, who had a new song that Stills was excited to try and record. Long before CSNY's version, Stephen, Jimi and Buddy Miles recorded this amazing rendition.
Send My Love To Linda - A superb new Hendrix original composition recorded with Cox and Miles in the aftermath of their successful Band Of Gypsys performances at the Fillmore East.
Cherokee Mist - Together with drummer Mitch Mitchell, Jimi created this moody, evocative original complete with his playing of a sitar to complement his traditional electric guitar.1. Mannish Boy

Painted Garden (Discontinued)Greg Ashley, mastermind behind The Gris Gris and The Mirrors, is going solo for the first time since his 1993 masterpiece Medicine Fuck Dream. The result, Painted Garden, is Ashley's most ambitious, textured, beautiful and dark record to date. Warmer and more intimate than Gris Gris' 2005 garage-psych stunner For The Season, Painted Garden still reflects the same vision behind that band's greatness.
Written in the burnt-out ghettos of Oakland and in Ashley's remote East Texas cabin, the album's ten songs drip with the psychedelic flair that turned on cats such as Roky Erikson, Mayo Thompson and Skip Spence (and more recently Vetiver, Six Organs of Admittance, and Devendra Banhart).
Beautifully orchestrated, sometimes fragile and always fuzzy, the album features great tunes, proof that the young songwriter's star is still on the rise. Written, produced and performed almost entirely by the artist, Painted Garden is a true vision realized, and puts Ashley right up there with the great musical minds of the day.

Family Vineyard and Folk Evaluation proudly present the first authorized LP reissue of Richmond, Indiana's fabled Hoi' Polloi. The band's lone 1972 self-titled
album, recorded over spring break at Earlham College by means of bouncing
between two stereo tape decks, is a fantastic collection of country twangers,
breathtaking singer-songwriter material, and bizarre tape cut-ups. With five songwriters in the band, what could have felt like another grab-bag student compilation instead feels like lost tapes of Emitt Rhodes hanging with Crosby, Stills, Nash
and Young while Faust producer Uwe Nettlebeck makes a guest appearance in the
Remastered from the original ¼" tapes, this deluxe vinyl edition comes jampacked with extras: Extensive liner notes featuring Patrick 'The Lama' Lundborg's
2003 conversation with the band (expanded with newly conducted interviews), a
digital download of the album featuring the original stereo mix of "Satisfaction
Guaranteed" and a wealth of bonus material from the band members' vaults,
including rare cuts from Earlham's annual student-produced "Crucible" LPs and
a collection of never-before-heard live recordings. Edition of 500 copies with reproduction of the original xerox insert1. Who's Gonna Help Me?
