Stone Soul (Speakers Corner)With all the exultation about the reconciliation between the capitalistic USA and the socialistic island state of Cuba, it is easy to oversee that the musical fusion between the two countries took place decades ago. Afro Cuban jazz, in which the interpretation and rhythms of swing and bebop are united with all imaginable rhythms from Brazil and the Caribbean, was label enough to describe a peaceful yet exciting and revolutionary music.
At first glance it appears that in his album Stone Soul the Cuban percussionist Mongo Santamaria just took a handful of popular songs from pop and soul and 'translated' them into his own musical language. So far so good: but the enthusiasm and joy with which the band performs is anything but ordinary. Once the threshold for a potent Latin combo has been overcome with meaty winds (See Saw), Sonny Fortune on the alto sax storms ahead along rhythm & blues tracks and breaks out with hectic cleft licks on his own headstrong path. Incited by crisp percussion, one can experience how traditional music is combined with a musician's own ideas to create completely new music.

About Speakers Corner
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.1. See-Saw

Stone Rollin'Stone Rollin' is the fifth studio album from Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter and record producer Raphael Saadiq. Known for defying the confines of working within one genre, this standard bearer for old school R&B returns with a new release that celebrates the classic sounds of 60s and 70s soul with a futuristic twist.
Featuring ten new tracks, Stone Rollin is the follow up to Saadiqs 2008 solo album The Way I See It, which boasted four Billboard R&B chart singles and was nominated for three Grammy Awards including Best R&B Album. Recorded at his studio complex the Blakeslee Recording Company in Los Angeles, Raphael Saadiq played bass, mellotron, keys, guitar, percussion and even drums on most of the tracks.
Opening with the stomping Heart Attack, the albums other standout cuts include the stunning Go To Hell, featuring his studio squad of musicians who are melodically complimented by an angelic choir, the evocative Dixieland number Day Dreams, featuring Robert Randolph who plays steel guitar on the track, and Just Dont, which includes a guest appearance from one of Saadiqs indie rock favorites Swedish-Japanese singer Yukimi Nagano (Little Dragon). Also making an appearance on that same song is one of Saadiqs idols Larry Dunn (Earth, Wind and Fire), who plays piano and contributes an epic Moog solo.1. Heart Attack

Allen Stone (Awaiting Repress)From backwoods barbecues and community gatherings, Allen Stone emerges to share personal melodies, telling tales of life after just 24 years. Originally getting his start singing at his father's church in small-town America, Stone's intense passion for music was instantly ignited by the great soul music of Marvin Gaye and Aretha Franklin, and eventually by the confessional lyrical fashion of the '60s-'70s singer/songwriters.
Since releasing his self-titled album digitally in early 2012, Stone has sold more than 16,000 units at iTunes completely independent of a label. ATO Records is now presenting Allen Stone's eponymous album for the first time in physical form. In addition to the original 10-song set, this vinyl edition from ATO also includes a bonus 10 featuring exclusive new tracks recorded live-in-the-studio at Robert Lang Studios in Seattle, WA and live at the Troubadour in Los Angeles, CA.LP

Soul ChristmasConsidered One Of The Best Rock N Roll Holiday Records Of All Time And Includes A Roster Of Legendary Soul Artists From Atlantic Records' Halcyon Years Of 1960s Soul

180g Vinyl Housed In A Single Pocket Tip-On Stoughton Paper-Wrapped UV-Gloss Sleeve

Originally released as an Atlantic holiday compilation in 1968 and long out of print on vinyl, Soul Christmas is an 11 track collection of songs featuring Soul legends such as Otis Redding, Carla Thomas, Solomon Burke, Joe Tex, Clarence Carter, William Bell, King Curtis, and Booker T & The MGs. Apart from nods to classics like White Christmas done by Otis, Booker T's Jingle Bells, and the R&B favorite What Are You Doing New Year's Eve (featuring Sax man King Curtis along with a guitar solo by Duane Allman), the songs are tailor-made originals that fit the style of the respective artists. Carter's Back Door Santa is a hilariously salacious cut; Tex gives us a preacher-like I'll Make Everyday Christmas; and Thomas is at her most cute and innocent with Gee Whiz, It's Christmas. Redding's version of Merry Christmas Baby is an obvious standout, while Bell's Everyday Will Be Like a Holiday is the only bona fide charted single. The album is ranked #9 on Rolling Stone's 25 Greatest Christmas Albums of All Time list.

Water For Your SoulWater For Your Soul is a culmination in Joss Stone's travels in sound, demonstrating how the teen soul prodigy has blossomed into an artist of style and substance. This is an album that pulses with the liquid groove of reggae, dazzles with the mix and match sonic adventure of hip hop, shimmers with the exotic sounds of world music and delivers the emotional belt of R&. Most of the songs for Water For Your Soul had been written and demoed before Joss's Total World Tour began but widening horizons convinced her to completely rethink and recut the record. The sound expanded to include Indian tabla, Bengali lute, Bansuri flute, African and Asian percussion, plus gospel choirs, New Orleans horns and full orchestra. After various experiments, abandoned and revisited sessions, the final album was more or less completed in a 10 day frenzy, with strings being recorded in London, percussion in Hawaii and Joss pulling it together at her own Home Grown Studios in Devon.1. 30th Anniversary Of The Legendary Album
Fishbone was one of the most distinctive and eclectic alternative rock bands of the late '80s. With their hyperactive, self-conscious diversity, goofy sense of humor, and sharp social commentary, the group gained a sizable cult following during the late '80s.
Truth and Soul is their second album, originally released in 1988. The album features a wide array of genres including punk, ska, reggae, soul, funk, elements of hard rock and blues. Truth and Soul contains a cover version of Curtis Mayfield's Freddie's Dead, originally from the soundtrack to the film Super Fly and it is the first single of the album. Three other tracks were released as singles Ma and Pa, with a video directed by Mike Lipscombe, Change and One Day. The album was awarded four-out-of-five stars in 2004's The New Rolling Stone Album Guide. Music critic Tom Moon called the album one of his 1000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die and Robert Dimery listed it as one of his 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

In the early '90s, Life of Agony was a straight-up Hardcore Metal band. They built up a loyal following with their debut River Runs Red, by incessant touring and word of mouth, with little MTV or radio airplay. On their second album, 1995's Ugly, the band chose a different musical path - they melded their Hardcore with the melodic Alternative Rock of Stone Temple Pilots and Alice In Chains.
Longtime fans or the record-buying public were mildly aroused, and the group was now faced with a new dilemma; should they stay true to their newly decided musical direction, or conform to their fans' expectations of what Life of Agony's music should sound like? The group chose to stick to their guns and do what their hearts told them to on Soul Searching Sun.

Rubber Soul (Awaiting Repress)Ranked 5/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Sourced From the Original Master Tapes
Cut at Abbey Road Studios
Pressed on 180 gram vinyl
From a modern perspective, this is where things start to get very interesting. Breaking out of the routine of squeezing albums between touring, Rubber Soul is the result of their first extended period in the studio.
The production is open and spacious, adorned but not yet overcrowded with new instruments and ideas. The songs themselves are like little Pop Art vignettes, where the lyrics are starting to match the quality of the melodies and arrangements. Even a simple, witty rocker such as Drive My Car is played with such tight grooviness (listen to the synchronised bass and guitar) that it practically sparkles with self-amusement.
Lennon, whose personality and leadership has been strongly at the fore throughout the early Beatles, really raises his game on Rubber Soul, with such thoughtful, breakthrough classics as Norwegian Wood (which showcases Harrison on a sitar), Nowhere Man, Girl and the utterly majestic In My Life (replete with George Martin's flighty harpsichord solo), surely one of the most perfect songs ever written.
Lyrically, McCartney lags behind, but in some ways his lighter, poppier songs help keep Rubber Soul fresh and bubbly, while his melodic bass-playing takes a huge leap forward, propelling everything. There is a crisp innocence about this album, a sense of sweet delight and joyful discovery.
A team consisting of some of the best producers and engineers in the recording industry were brought together and would spend 4 long years mixing and mastering with some of the most state of the art recording equipment. Treating these records much like a science experiment, engineers ran extensive tests before copying the analog master tapes over into a digital format using 24-bit/192 kHz resolution, and carefully removing clicks, vocal pops and poor edits. The Beatles' Original Mono Studio Album Remastered At Abbey Road Directly From The Analogue Masters For Vinyl Release By Sean Magee and Steve Berkowitz
Lacquers Cut Using Neumann VMS-80 Lathe
Manufactured For The World At Optimal Media In Germany, The Beatles' Albums Are Presented In Their Original Glory, Both Sonically And In Their Packaging.
The Beatles in mono: This is how most listeners first heard the group in the 1960s, when mono was the predominant audio format. Up until 1968, each Beatles album was given a unique mono and stereo mix, but the group always regarded the mono as primary. The Beatles' nine U.K. albums, the American-compiled Magical Mystery Tour, and the Mono Masters collection of non-album tracks will be released in mono on 180-gram vinyl LPs with faithfully replicated artwork. Newly mastered from the analogue master tapes, each album will be available both individually and within a lavish, limited 14-LP boxed edition, The Beatles In Mono, which also includes a 108-page hardbound book.
In an audiophile-minded undertaking, The Beatles' acclaimed mono albums have been newly mastered for vinyl from quarter-inch master tapes at Abbey Road Studios by GRAMMY®-winning engineer Sean Magee and GRAMMY®-winning mastering supervisor Steve Berkowitz. While The Beatles In Mono CD boxed set released in 2009 was created from digital remasters, for this new vinyl project, Magee and Berkowitz cut the records without using any digital technology. Instead, they employed the same procedures used in the 1960s, guided by the original albums and by detailed transfer notes made by the original cutting engineers. Working in the same room at Abbey Road where most of The Beatles' albums were initially cut, the pair first dedicated weeks to concentrated listening, fastidiously comparing the master tapes with first pressings of the mono records made in the 1960s. Using a rigorously tested Studer A80 machine to play back the precious tapes, the new vinyl was cut on a 1980s-era VMS80 lathe.
Via Michael Fremer (Analog Planet) on the mastering process:
The EQ applied was based upon the original cutting engineers' notes as well as careful listening to original first lacquer, first mother, first stamper EMI pressings (-1, 1, G matrix). The cartridge used was Ortofon's 2M Black.
It's important to remember that the tapes have aged-some as much as fifty years-and the monitoring, playback and mastering equipment have changed as well, even though the work was done in the very same room in which the originals were mastered. Solid state has replaced tubes in the cutting chain.
Lacquers were cut using Abbey Road Studios' Neumann VMS-80 lathe, equipped with a Neumann SX-74 cutter head. The originals were cut on a Scully lathe, perhaps with a Westrex cutter head.1. Drive My Car

I'm Just Like You: Sly's Stone Flower 1969-70Compilation And Notes By Alec Palao

All Tracks Newly Remastered From The Original Tapes
In 1970, The Family Stone were at the peak of their popularity, but the maestro Sly Stone had already moved his head to a completely different space. The first evidence of Sly's musical about-turn was revealed by the small catalog of his new label, Stone Flower: a pioneering, peculiar, minimal electro-funk sound that unfolded over just four seven-inch singles. Stone Flower's releases were credited to their individual artists, but each had Sly's design and musicianship stamped into the grooves-and the words "Written by Sylvester Stewart/Produced and arranged by Sly Stone" on the sticker.
Set up by Stone's manager David Kapralik with distribution by Atlantic Records, Stone Flower was, predictably, a family affair: the first release was by Little Sister, fronted by Stone's little sister Vaetta Stewart. It was short lived too-the imprint folded in 1971-but its influence was longer lasting. The sound Stone formulated while working on Stone Flower's output would shape the next phase in his own career as a recording artist: it was here he began experimenting with the brand new Maestro Rhythm King drum machine. In conjunction with languid, effected organ and guitar sounds and a distinctly lo-fi soundscape, Sly's productions for Stone Flower would inform the basis of his masterwork There's A Riot Goin' On.
The first 45 came in February 1970: Little Sister's dancefloor-ready "You're The One" hit Number 22 in the charts-the label's highest showing. The follow-up, "Stanga, also by Little Sister, made the wah pedal the star. The third release came from 6IX, a six-piece multi-racial rock group whose sole release, a super-slow version of The Family Stone's "Dynamite, featured only the lead singer and harmonica player from the group. Joe Hicks was the final Stone Flower stablemate; his pulsing, electronic Life And Death In G&A" is one of the bleakest moments Sly Stone ever created on disc (Hicks' prior single for Scepter, "Home Sweet Home," the first released Stone Flower production, is also included).
This long overdue compilation of Sly's Stone Flower era gathers each side of the five 45s plus ten previously unissued cuts from the label archives, all newly remastered from the original tapes. In these grooves you'll find the missing link between the rocky, soulful Sly Stone of Stand! and the dark, drum machine-punctuated, overdubbed sound of There's A Riot Going On. Solomon Burke helped to shape the sound of rhythm and blues as one of
the founding fathers of soul music. He had a litany of hit singles in the
1960s for Atlantic Records including "Cry to Me," "If You Need Me," "Down
in the Valley," and "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love," to name a few.
Atlantic Records' co-founder Jerry Wexler has referred to Burke as "the
greatest male soul singer of all time" and it was reported that he signed a
"handshake" deal with the label within ten minutes of originally entering
Wexler's office. His signing helped to reinvigorate the label, as stars Bobby
Darin and Ray Charles had just left.
Drawing inspiration from gospel, jazz, country and blues-Burke developed
his own unique style and was often called "The King of Rock 'n' Soul"
earning him a wide bi-racial audience. Due to his spiritual background he
refused to be classified as an R&B singer because of its labeled stigma
by the church. During his almost six decades of performing, he released
38 studio albums-selling at total 17 million-and had 35 charting singles
including 26 that made the Billboard R&B charts.
In 2001, he was inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame as a performer
and has been ranked by Rolling Stone on their list of "100 Greatest
Singers of All Time." Burke is one of the most important male vocalists in
music history and has influenced legendary rockers such as the Rolling
Stones, Elvis Costello, Van Morrison, the Animals and Tom Petty1. Just Out of Reach (Of My Two Open Arms)

Complete & Unbelievable...The Otis Redding Dictionary Of SoulRanked 254/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time
50th Anniversary Double LP Package Includes Both Mono & Stereo Versions + Bonus 7-Inch Single
Otis Redding helped define soul music in 1966 with Complete And Unbelievable... The Otis Redding Dictionary Of Soul. The album, which peaked at #5 on the U.S. R&B charts, was once praised by critic Jon Landau as: The finest record ever to come out of Memphis and certainly the best example of modern soul ever recorded.
Redding recorded his fifth studio album, THE OTIS REDDING DICTIONARY OF SOUL, in the summer of 1966 at Stax Studios in Memphis. Together with Booker T. & the M.G.'s, pianist Isaac Hayes and the Memphis Horns, Redding recorded 12 songs for the album, including the all-time classics, Try A Little Tenderness and Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song).
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of this landmark recording, Rhino will release THE OTIS REDDING DICTIONARY OF SOUL as a double-LP set featuring both mono and stereo versions of the album, the latter of which has been out-of-print for decades. Both LPs will be pressed on 180-gram vinyl for superior audio quality. The set comes with a bonus 7 reissue of the single: Try A Little Tenderness b/w I'm Sick Y'all.LP 1

Sly & the Family Stone came into their own with their second album, Dance to the Music, released in 1968. It contains the Top Ten hit single of the same name. This seminal album helped lay the groundwork for the development of Funk music.
This is such exuberant music, bursting with joy and invention, it's easy to get sucked into the freewheeling spirit and cavalier virtuosity of the group. Prior to this record no one, not even the Family Stone, treated Soul as a psychedelic sun splash, filled with bright melodies, kaleidoscopic arrangements, inextricably intertwined interplay, and deft, fast rhythms.
Dance to the Music peaked at #8 in The Billboard Hot 100, and reached 9th place in the R&B Singles of 1968. The song propelled Sly & The Family Stone into the stratosphere.1. Dance To The Music

There's A Riot Going On was Sly & The Family Stone's answer to Marvin Gaye's What's Going On?, the seminal Soul album that came out five months before the Sly Stone masterpiece. It's a dark, earthy Funk album, that went straight to number 1 upon release. Single Family Affair also topped the charts, and is still one of Sly Stone's most beloved tracks. It manages to capture the era of militant activism and deep social unrest in a brooding, moody album with tension that could cut through steel. It still appears on plenty of 'greatest albums of all time' lists (Rolling Stone placed it on #99 out of 500) and is seen as one of the most important and influential albums of the 1970s.Side A

Whole New ThingBy the time Sly Stone, former producer/talent scout for Tom Donahue's Autumn records, decided to step out front and form his own band in 1967, he knew exactly what the music business needed: a multi-racial, boy-girl outfit that skillfully blended elements of soul, rock, jazz and funk. Sly & the Family Stone's debut, A Whole New Thing, didn't completely tip Sly's hand, but it got the ball rolling in the right direction by adding fuzzed-up guitar to soulful vocals, a tasty horn section, occasional protest lyrics and just enough Golden State psychedelia to make Sly's groundbreaking work unmistakable. This revolutionary new sound wouldn't fully catch the nation's fancy until the spring of 1968, but it was already perfectly clear that A Whole New Thing was going to be nothing less than what it proclaimed! It was, indeed, the harbinger of a whole new thing!1. Underdog

Mama EarthThe all-star Mama Earth lineup of Joss Stone (vocals), Nitin Sawhney (guitar), Jonathan Joseph (drums), Étienne M'BappÉ (bass/guitar) and Jonathan Shorten (keyboards) will release their debut EP Mama Earth via Mascot/Provogue.
The project started when British soul singer Joss Stone and her former musical director Jonathan Joseph hit on the Mama Earth concept of an album driven by the dynamic rhythms of Africa. A band was assembled from all corners of the music world. Jonathan's compadre Étienne M'BappÉ, the dazzling Cameroon-born multi-instrumentalist whose rÉsumÉ spans from John McLaughlin to Robben Ford; Jonathan Shorten, who had produced much of Stone's studio catalogue between penning some of the biggest hits for acts including Gabrielle and (again) Joss Stone. Finally, there was Nitin Sawhney: the genre-slipping wildcard and one-man musical tidal wave whose collaborations take in Sting, Paul McCartney, and the London Symphony Orchestra.
The 5 musicians convened at Stone's house, where the musical squad didn't take long to feel each other out. Music was spontaneously written on the spot, without any preparation. In the meantime, Stone purposefully kept her own creative process separate from the four musicians. I left them to do their own thing with the music in the studio, she reflects, while I was cooking dinner in the kitchen. I deliberately didn't have any input in the music, because I didn't want to affect it - or it'd all come out hip-hop and R&B! Then they'd come across into the house, give me the track and I'd sit in the kitchen writing lyrics and melodies with my mum. So it was, like, 'You guys do you, and I'll do me - then we'll put it together'. And that's the way it worked. I also went down to the river on my own with a pen and paper and write in the grass by the river. Which was a good way to do it, actually, The whole project is about Mother Nature. It's supposed to be from her perspective.
Just ten days after they came together - and following a powerful co-production from all five band members - the Mama Earth sessions were over. And yet, you sense that the story of this fascinating band is only just beginning. Impulsive, dynamic and sometimes downright dangerous, this is an album unlike anything else in the five musicians' respective CVs, unprecedented in the clinical modern music scene - and sure to make waves upon its release. I guess this album is essentially how I think of music, considers Sawhney. It was all about being open to the moment. I think that's really what I loved about this project. To me, Mama Earth is what music should be about, really...1. Mama Earth

Sly Stone is a songwriter and record producer, mostly famous for his role as frontman for Sly and the Family Stone. The band played a critical role in the development of soul, funk, rock, and psychedelics in the 1960s and '70s.
Sly Stone was identified as a musical prodigy at a young age. By the time he was seven, Sylvester had already become proficient on the keyboards and by the age of eleven he had mastered the guitar, bass, and drums as well. While still in high school, Sylvester had settled primarily on the guitar and joined a number of high school bands.
The most talented musician I know is Sly Stone, Bootsy Collins told Mojo magazine (March 2002 issue). He's more talented than anybody I ever have seen - he's amazing. I worked with him in Detroit from 1981 to '83, and to see him just fooling around, playing, jamming, is a whole other trip. He's the most amazing musician.
In 1993 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the group.
High On You (1975) is the first solo album by songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sly Stone. For the most part, Stone performed a large part of the instrumentation for each song on his own by using multi-tracking. The album prominently features vocalist Rudy Love and includes the singles I Get High on You, Le Lo Li and Crossword Puzzle.1. I Get High On You

The evolution from blues to rock accelerated with the Rolling Stones' second American LP. They turned soul into guitar rock for the hits It's All Over Now and Time Is on My Side (the latter of which was their first American Top Ten single). 2120 South Michigan Avenue is a great instrumental blues-rock jam; Around and Around is one of their best Chuck Berry covers; and If You Need Me reflects an increasing contemporary soul influence. On the other hand, the group originals (except for the propulsive Empty Heart) are weak and derivative, indicating that the band still had a way to go before it could truly challenge the Beatles' throne.
