StrangerOn Stranger Balmorhea continues the cosmic dialog they began with their eponymous debut in 2007. Though the spirit of Texas' early inhabitants and the weight of the night sky inspired previous albums All is Wild, All is Silent (2009) and Constellations (2010), Stranger shifts the focus from the celestial to the terrestrial, or more accurately, it begins to explore the celestial resonance in all things terrestrial.
Balmorhea's music has always been guided by the experience of living in Texas, but with Stranger the band moves beyond contemplative reverence for the land and the history of their home state. The most forward-leaning of their catalog, Stranger presents worlds of tenderness, aggression, estrangement, and freedom using an expanded sonic palette including guitar loops, vibes, synthesizers, ukulele, and steel pan drums. In addition to these new sounds, electric guitars and percussion take the stage once occupied by piano and acoustic guitars.
Stranger explores the kinetic rhythms that dictate our day-to-day lives, fascinated by the wanderlust that drove the itinerant hearts of our earliest settlers and that continues to pulse in the kids roaming Texas' suburban sprawl. Unsettled, but patient, these songs embrace everyday sensuality, youthful discovery, and nomadic reverie awe-struck by the divine energy that permeates all of our earthly fauna and flora.
Refined over many months, and in one case years, the band took care to ensure every note on Stranger feels essential, vivid, and confident. During the writing process, Rob Lowe was living in Alpine, Texas, just down the road from Marfa, and Michael Muller had relocated to Brooklyn. Absorbing their new environments, and filtering them through uniquely Texan lenses, the band has created an album that stands defiantly alone in the sea of modern independent music. Opening with the electric guitar loops, synths, and steel drums of Days, the band invites us to move forward with them as they explore without pretense or expectation. Pilgrim provides the perfect ending, blurring alpha and omega...a concluding gesture taking us back to our beginnings.1. Days

My Midnight Things (Pre-Order)Release Date: June 29, 2018*
Since 1983, the name Lizzy Borden has been synonymous with heavy metal music of the highest caliber. With My Midnight Things he has reaffirmed this standing, delivering the biggest, most dramatic, moving and cinematic record of his career, and one of the most essential additions to the genre in 2018. While showcasing a diverse range of sounds, tones and moods, it is unmistakably the work of the man who released a string of classic albums in the 1980s and two more in the 00s, but with a new fire burning at the heart of the record, it is one that he has lovingly crafted for those who scream along with every word at his shows. "On our last tour across Europe, Asia and South America, I noticed that the audience had changed," he states. "It got a lot younger. I looked out to see all these kids in every country singing at the top of their lungs to songs that were written before they were born, and that made me want to start writing some full-blown albums just for them. I wanted to make songs that would be theirs, albums that they could be a part of."
Having not dropped a record since 2007's mighty Appointment With Death, fans have understandably champed at the bit waiting for new material. Though penning numerous songs throughout that period, when it became time to seriously focus upon writing an album, the multi-instrumentalist did what needed to be done to be sure of creating the best possible music. "I knew the only way I could find what I was looking for was to lock myself away and experiment, so that's what I did. I wrote and recorded in my studio in North Hollywood in a very industrial area all night every night, with only sirens from fire trucks and these songs to keep me company. It was a lonely time, but very fruitful. You might even hear some of those sirens in some of the songs if you listen closely." Starting with between forty and fifty songs, he steadily whittled these down to fifteen, and finally to the ten that made the record, only wanting the very best to make the cut. As with all of his albums, once Borden hones in on a core subject matter he builds the album around it, and in the case of My Midnight Things, the theme is that of love. However, adopting a different approach to writing than usual, rather than starting with music, he instead focused on the lyrics, and penned the music later to best serve the stories being told, wanting every song to stand up on its own while keeping the storyline of the record moving forward. "I just let the lyrics drive the mood and the way I would sing each song, but overall I kept it varied and engaging enough so that listeners will want to devour the whole album in one sitting, without you hearing me repeat myself."
The diversity of the record makes it abundantly clear that he succeeded, and it makes for a thrilling ride from start to finish. Opening with the titanic stomp of the title track, the cinematic feel kicks off from the start, a serpentine seductiveness coiling through it, and the likes of "A Stranger To Love" and the bruising "Our Love Is God" inhabit similarly dark territory. The more stripped down, haunting strains of the reprise of the title track - which was in fact the first version penned - is achingly frail, and then counterpointing all of the record's darker and more brooding moments are the upbeat "Long May They Haunt Us", the hugely anthemic and uplifting closer "We Belong In The Shadows", and the frankly glorious "Run Away With Me". While the title of the album "means many different things" to Borden, he chooses not to disclose these, allowing listeners to find their own meaning in it, which is something important to him. In terms of the record's central theme, he acknowledges that while "love" seems somewhat obvious, he tried to find a way to see it through a different lens. "Sometimes being in love is the worst thing that can happen to you if you're with the wrong person and you can't stop it, and sometimes it's the best thing in the world. I knew I could find things in between every other song that's been written about it. So that was the challenge. But, even though I write with a theme in mind and with different personalities singing each song, I never write in storyboard form. I always try to write in poetry form. I think you can search for more meaning that way, from one line to the next there can be multiple meanings, as opposed to being trapped telling a story."
Having signed a new contract with Metal Blade on the strength of three demo tracks, Borden opted to produce My Midnight Things himself, with Joey Scott as co-producer, who also handled all the drumming duties. Having an old school approach to his drumming, feeding off the vocals, lyrics and melody rather than just acting as a time keeper, he was perfectly suited to Borden's approach to the record, which also applied to his role as co-producer. "I knew what I was going for and had doubts that I could find a producer who would understand that. My approach is very different than what is happening in today's music, but Joey got that and wanted the same thing." With Marliese Quance Mildenberger handling the majority of the keyboards, her unique melancholy playing style added even more "emotion and dimension" to each song, while Borden himself handled all of the bass, guitars, some keys and all of the vocal parts. Anyone exposed to My Midnight Things will find it hard to deny that like all of his records, it is a true vocal tour de force, each track endowed with a phenomenal amount of layering to create something that is uniquely Lizzy Borden. "The style that I record vocals harkens back to The Beatles and Queen. It's time consuming and tedious, but the result gives you a more multi-dimensional feel than you would get with a single vocal. When I recorded 'Master Of Disguise' (1989), I was clocked in at a seven-octave vocal range between all the backing and lead vocals. It gave the feel of multiple personalities within my voice, and I've used that technique on the last four albums."
That every song on the record could be released as a single is testament to just how strong this collection is. While truly a record for his fans, its appeal will easily reach much further, and Borden is as eager to get back on stage as his devout followers who cannot wait to see him back up there. "I've already started working on the 'My Midnight Things' Show, and I really can't wait to play these songs live. There are so many talented players out there in the world, I know I will find the right guys or girls to be on stage with me in my touring band, and just based on what is being talked about, so far it will be the best show I've ever done. I really do feel a new excitement that I have not felt in years. The best is yet to come."

[A Place to Bury Strangers] sculpts something unexpectedly elegant out of the type of din you'd expect to
hear on an airport tarmac - SPIN MAGAZINE
Hypnotic and forward-looking, A Place to Bury Strangers sound more vital than ever"- ALLMUSIC
A real sonic adventure that never relinquishes its grip on structure, despite the fact that the guitar effects
pedals are practically stomped into the floor- POPMATTERS
That's the most intense fear and feeling-when you go to a show and you're actually scared, says Oliver
Ackermann, guitarist and frontman of Brooklyn trio A Place To Bury Strangers.
Or you can palpably feel the danger in the music, adds bassit Dion Lunadon, Like it's going to fall apart
at any moment and the players doing it are so in the moment they don't give a shit about anything else.
They're just going for it. It's a gutter kinda vibe; everything about it is icky and evil and dangerous.
The same could be said the band's fourth album, Transfixiation. Rather than fixate on the minute details
like they may have done in the past, the group, rounded out by drummer Robi Gonzalez, trust their
instincts and try to keep things as pure as possible. Music is much more exhilarating when it's
unpredictable even on repeat plays, and this is very much an unpredictable record. Gonzalez makes his
recording debut with the band here, and it's obvious that he's helped pushed the band's recordings closer
to the level of their infamous live shows.
The one thing we have in common is this fire when we're playing, adds Gonzalez. I don't know; it's real

Onwards To The WallWithout any official testing, Dead Oceans can safely say that the master recording for Onwards to the Wall is the loudest one ever submitted to the label for approval. Usually, they crank the volume to catch any digital pops or hisses that may foil a master. But this one they actually had to, ashamedly, put at half volume. This thing is pummeling. Theres no other way to capture the music of A Place To Bury Strangers than just beyond the boundary of whats considered properly loud. Produced, engineered, mixed and mastered by APTBS themselves, this is the sound of a band in control of making out of control music.
Onwards to the Wall packs every bit of the searing sonic maelstrom listeners have come to expect from APTBS. Yet, the adroit songcraft thats always been there is brought more to the fore, pop hooks are repurposed and more instantly recognizable. Now joined by bassist Dion Lunadon, formerly of The D4, Ackerman has found a crucial companion in pulling timeless melodies from their jet engine textures. Standout So Far Away takes all the pure pop perfection of The Box Tops The Letter and shoots it through with a barely-harnessed dark energy and snarling propulsion. The title track carries a similar balance of classic, '60s-pop hooks and doomed-out vibes, employing a boy-girl vocal trade-off thats at once both sexy and menacing.
Onwards to the Wall is a fresh, complete artistic statement from A Place To Bury Strangers . Its a new chapter, a prelude for what awaits us on the horizon. It is a taste of greatness to come.1. I Lost You

The Natch'l BluesTaj Mahal's second album, recorded in the spring and fall of 1968, opens with more stripped-down Delta-style blues in the manner of his debut, but adds a little more amplification (partly courtesy of Al Kooper on organ) before moving into wholly bigger sound on numbers like She Caught The Katy And Left Me A Mule To Ride and The Cuckoo -- the latter, in particular, features crunchy electric and acoustic guitars and Gary Gilmore playing his bass almost like a lead instrument, like a bluesman's answer to John Entwistle. Most notable, however, may be the two original closing numbers, You Don't Miss Your Water ('Til Your Well Runs Dry) and Ain't That A Lot Of Love, which offer Taj Mahal working in the realm of soul and treading onto Otis Redding territory. This is particularly notable on You Don't Miss Your Water, which achieves the intensity of a gospel performance and comes complete with a Stax/Volt-style horn arrangement by Jesse Ed Davis that sounds more like the real thing than the real thing. Ain't That a Lot of Love, by contrast, is driven by a hard electric guitar sound and a relentless bass part that sounds like a more urgent version of the bassline from the Spencer Davis Group's Gimme Some Lovin'. This LP reissue includes a trio of bonus tracks: a faster-paced rendition of The Cuckoo with a more prominent lead guitar, the slow electric lament New Stranger Blues featuring some good mandolin-style playing on the guitar, and the rocking instrumental Things Are Gonna Work Out Fine, which is a killer showcase for Davis' lead electric guitar and Taj Mahal's virtuosity on the harmonica.1. Jeff Beck's 1968 Masterwork Album - First Time Authorized Audiophile Vinyl
Stunning Gatefold Cover With Rare Photo Of The Jeff Beck Group
Mastered From The Epic Records Stereo Tapes By Joe Reagoso And Manufactured At R.T.I.
Jeff Beck is truly a worldwide gift to rock music and guitar enthusiasts everywhere. There will never be another Jeff
Beck, a guitar genius who has enthralled generations of aspiring musicians and music lovers with the many fine recordings
he has made for the past five decades.
Celebrating five decades in the music business, this English native initially captivated millions of kids in the 60's with
his first recordings with The Yardbirds. He drove the rockers mad with his famous guitar licks and dynamic presence on the
stage. As individual members of the band started solo projects, Jeff Beck began the rudiments of The Jeff Beck Group with
his friends Jimmy Page, Nicky Hopkins, Keith Moon and John Paul Jones and threw down the mega instrumental Beck's
Bolero. This track along new tracks recorded at Abbey Road with Rod Stewart, Ronnie Wood, Nicky Hopkins and Mick Waller
would serve up his very first solo smash album Truth.
Kicking things off with the hard hitting Shapes of Things, this Yardbirds' revisit takes on a whole new approach with
the soulful vocals of Rod Stewart paired with the guitar antics of Jeff Beck. A match made in heaven, these two pioneers of
the British blues scene carry on with more masterful workouts on such fare as their hits Rock My Plimsoul, Let Me Love You
and their inspiring tour de force Blues De Luxe. Willie Dixon's I Ain't Superstitious and You Shook Me, plus their brilliant Tim
Rose cover of Morning Dew along with the brilliance of Beck's Bolero made Truth the revered masterpiece that it still is today.
Noted for his stellar guitar work, pretty much introducing new ways of using technique, distortion and effects to a
whole new generation of guitar players, Jeff Beck's Truth is truly a primer for a ton of rock and blues artists.
Friday Music is no stranger to the music of the legendary Jeff Beck, his arsenal of fine recordings already on our label.
That is why we are so very proud to announce another fine installment in The Jeff Beck/Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile
Vinyl Series with his first legendary masterpiece Truth.

Cryptocracy (Awaiting Repress)From the metal-hewn flatlands of Finland comes a dark new force in electronic music. Forged in the electrical fire of industrial; nurtured through the apocalyptic feedback of art-rock, experimental and all things disruptive; and championed by the most influential names in EDM and beyond, Huoratron is deeper, stranger and harder-core than whatever came before it.
Huoratron came to life in 2003, the brainchild of DJ/producer/mad 8-bit scientist Aku Raski. His sinister vision has taken form in just a few releases: some material for Finnish label New Judas, including the proactively aggressive Prevenge EP, containing angry blip-fest $$ Troopers and Corporate Occult, a slice of electro-house gone horribly awry. A set of remixes that changed H.I.M.'s In Venere Veritas from a jangly bit of radio rock to a doomed ride aboard a haunted 747 and M.I.A.'s Internet Connection from her usual minimal-funky hoedown to a sizzling nuclear rain storm.
After resigning to Last Gang in 2010, Raski hit the studio, emerging a year later with Cryptocracy, his first full-length album. To be blatantly honest I do not personally feel a close resemblance to many, if any artist within my scene, Raski explains. This is mostly because I'm driven by my own vigorous motivation and do what I do despite associations made by others. I mean no disrespect by this. It is simply a fact that I, as an artist am in the center of the storm and feel content there.
Cryptocracy is a journey of destruction, driven by chip synths, distortion and gut-punching bass. Recognizable sounds peak their heads out occasionally: a house riff on Transcendence, a dubstep pass on Sea of Meat, stripped-down techno on A699F. But they're swallowed up by an apocalyptic wave; the noises, textures and sonic sneak attacks that are Huoratron's signature, born more from a feeling than a particular genre focus.1. Cryptocracy

Ride OutBob Seger has emerged from the studio equipped with a new album, Ride Out, set to be released on Capitol Records. The first single, "Detroit
Made," pays homage to America's love affair with the automobile. The uptempo song hit radio airwaves August 15, serving as the perfect backdrop to the
20th annual Woodward Dream Cruise, the world's largest one day celebration of classic car culture.
"I feel really good about this record," says Seger. "This album touches on how I think a lot of us feel about finding our place in a more complicated world - from how we appreciate things as simple and pure as love, to navigating through the corruption and violence that permeates the news. It sums up a lot of
feelings I have about a variety of subjects."
Produced by Seger, the new collection stays true to his legendary sound as he effortlessly marries rock, blues and country, yielding an album with all the
hallmarks of the rocker's deep catalog of hits. Seger began teasing tracks from the album during his 2013 tour, including "Detroit Made," "All of The
Roads" and "California Stars." Ride Out is Seger's first studio album since his 2006 platinum-certified Face The Promise and follows his 2011 platinum-certified release, Ultimate Hits: Rock and Roll Never Forgets.
Bob Seger has sold more than 51 million albums and has racked up 13 platinum and 7 multi-platinum RIAA-certified album sales awards in the U.S.
alone. He is both a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, and his Greatest Hits, Against The Wind, Night Moves, Stranger In
Town, Nine Tonight, and Live Bullet have been RIAA-certified for more than five million U.S. album sales each. The 1994 Greatest Hits collection was the

The Natch'l Blues (Pure Pleasure)Taj Mahal's second album, recorded in the spring and fall of 1968, opens with more stripped-down Delta-style blues in the manner of his debut, but adds a little more amplification (partly courtesy of Al Kooper on organ) before moving into wholly bigger sound on numbers like She Caught The Katy And Left Me A Mule To Ride and The Cuckoo -- the latter, in particular, features crunchy electric and acoustic guitars and Gary Gilmore playing his bass almost like a lead instrument, like a bluesman's answer to John Entwistle. This LP reissue includes a trio of bonus tracks: a faster-paced rendition of The Cuckoo with a more prominent lead guitar, the slow electric lament New Stranger Blues featuring some good mandolin-style playing on the guitar, and the rocking instrumental Things Are Gonna Work Out Fine, which is a killer showcase for Davis' lead electric guitar and Taj Mahal's virtuosity on the harmonica.
- Taj Mahal (harmonica, guitar)
- Jesse Edwin (guitar, piano, arranger)
- Al Kooper (organ, piano)
- Gary Gilmore (bass)
- Chuck Blackwell, Earl Palmer (drums)
Recording: May & October 1968
Production: David Rubinson
About Pure Pleasure
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.1. Good Morning Miss Brown Corinna

Hive MindIf youve heard Daniel Martin-McCormicks name recently, it would have been either in association with his disco / punk / echo band Mi Ami, or as Sex Worker on the Not Not Fun label, or as Ital on NNFs sister label 100% Silk. Raised in Washington, DC, Martin-McCormick has a history in the citys hardcore scenehe was in Dischord Records band Black Eyes in the early 2000sbut was also making dance-inspired tracks during the same period, coming from a very different angle than the average guy with a copy of Logic Pro and a working knowledge of dance musics history.
Martin-McCormicks music is a stranger thing. Hive Mind, his debut full-length under the Ital moniker, uses houses easygoing 4/4 structure as a kind of camouflage for more out-there sonic explorations, subverting expectations, seeking the links between dubs space- and sound-bending, industrials unsettling sonics and the effects and black holes of minimal at its weirdest. The album has a sculptured feel: sounds twist in space while melodies pitch-shift in an unsettling way, voices fade in and out, nothing is ever allowed to settle comfortably, everything vibrates.
Opener Doesnt Matter (If You Love Him) sounds a bit like Tackhead if they had made house music, using a flickering and confidently repeated phrase over a lumbering drum and bass line, introducing swirling and bombing synths into the mix once the secret comes out. The strange marriage of treated voices and swelling, pitch-bent chords and effects on Floridian Void draws the listener into its strange atmosphere; its an ambient house track of sorts, but the ambience here is a swirling, confusing, watery vortex rather than fuzzy, new age pap. Privacy Settings builds creepy wolf howls over a slow bass line and cold, far-away drums, estranged from their usual disco setting, while Israel picks things up again, with weird, pitch-shifting bells over dubby toms and cold chords. Final Wave restores the album to something resembling normality, with a disco-like swing that recalls Moodymanns beat-down productions slid through brutal dub-like effects that bring out a shade of strangeness in an otherwise happy groove.1. Beak & Claw (Discontinued)Comes with a digital download card! Stranger things have happened, but rarely do they make such beautiful music. The three esses that comprise the enigmatically titled s / s / s are as follows: Sufjan Stevens, he of the Fifty States Project and various baroque folk-pop opuses; Serengeti, the wry-witted rapper known for in-depth on-record character studies; and Son Lux, silken-voiced singer, studio wizard and singular beatsmith. The project's roots reach back to 2009's Dark Was the Night compilation, where Stevens and Geti met over a Buck 65 remix of a song written by psych-folkie Castanets. Continuing in the spirit of (unlikely) collaboration, the pair passed beats and raps back and forth, eventually enlisting Son Lux to dream Beak and Claw into fruition.
While this momentous EP comprises a mere four songs, each covers an immense stretch of sonic territory and emotional range. At six minutes, "Museum Day" may be the most adventurous and also the most satisfying, opening with a swath of AutoTuned heartache courtesy of Stevens, cresting with the darkly detailed raps of Geti, and closing in a hail of crashing cymbals, orchestral glitch and haunted coos from Son Lux. "Beyond Any Doubt" exchanges that taut splendor for deeper grooves whose farthest-out moments bring to mind Shabazz Palaces' cracked futurisms, albeit spiked with a falsetto'd pop hook. Fuzzy bass and industrial clang crash into lines about unrealized escapism and unpaid bills. Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond lends "If This Is Real" its Andrews Sister-like chorus, an immaculate contrast to the aural chaos that eventually overtakes the song. Meanwhile, Doseone (Subtle, Themselves) lends a similar buoyancy to "Octomom," an electrospackled, mostly spoken piece that plays like a Laurie Anderson track for the reality television generation (also featuring jaw harp and harmonica by Ohio folk vet Hal Walker). Because of its subject matter, this final song goes a long way to illustrating Beak and Claw's strange magic and, ultimately, why s / s / s works at all. Geti's humor and humanity are matched by playfulness and poignancy every step of the way. In the end, sublime confluence prevails.1. Museum Day

Some Days Are Better Than OthersTemporary Residence has waited with eager anticipation to release Matthew Coopers spellbinding soundtrack to Some Days Are Better Than Others since before his creative breakthrough album, Similes (released under his more widely known Eluvium moniker) was even made. The film stars James Mercer (Broken Bells, The Shins) and Carrie Brownstein (Portlandia, Sleater-Kinney) as strangers whose lives occasionally intersect as they navigate their way through the struggles of personal attachment and disconnection.
When viewing the film, Cooper observed themes being presented regarding our throw-away society, and realized that both he and Some Days Are Better Than Others director Matt McCormick shared a common interest in this world of things left behind and the emotional baggage that is connected to it, whether broken or simply tossed aside for something new; something once considered the future, turning into antiquated rubble. Cooper decided that using a collection of damaged instruments would be a fitting way to underscore this aspect of the film.
A long-time collector of odds and ends and junked musical instruments, Cooper has amassed an impressive array of thrift store and garage sale keyboards, foot pedals, and electronics over the years, always hoping to discover the ghosts hidden within and the unique properties they may possess.1.
