The Boy With The Arab Strap

This highly anticipated album from Belle and Sebastian arrives with every hope satisfied. Each song is a cunning short story that wraps itself around you like a cozy couch throw. The loose theme running through this 12-song reverie is seduction. It plays out in both the drowsy sexual hopes of principal songwriter Stuart Murdoch's idle protagonists and the giddiness of bandmate Stevie Jackson's Seymour Stein and Chickfactor, which document his bewitchment by the city of New York and its beautiful girls and florid pitchmen. The complex arrangements favor a whimsical diversity best experienced in Sleep the Clock Around, which features synthesizer bloops, trumpets, and bagpipes! If you haven't figured out that this Scottish eight-piece deserves every iota of hype it's receiving, it's time to have your ears checked and your record collection gone over by a certified professional. --Lois Maffeo

    Blood, Sweat, & Tears

With his Presley-like mystique, a strapping baritone voice and songs with universal lunchbucket appeal, Johnny Cash reached one of many career high-water marks with his sprawling 1963 epic, Blood, Sweat And Tears. From the perspiration-drenched, eight-minute version of The Legend Of John Henry's Hammer to Busted, Harlan Howard's down 'n' out hard-luck story, Cash made everything he recorded sound like it had been written just for him. This exact replica of Cash's 1963 classic -on rock-busting 180-gram Sundazed vinyl- shows Cash once again straddling the worlds of country, folk and pop like a black-clad behemoth: a once-in-a-generation artist whose revered work will live on forever.

    Who Never Rests

"Who Never Rests" kinda says it all. Khan is an extremely prolific producer, having produced electronic music under at least ten pseudonyms, including Bizz OD, 4E, El Turco Loco, Captain Comatose, Kid, and Khan. "Who Never Rests" drips with sleaze and sophistication. There's a party, and Satan's standing in the corner, soaking in sweat, and drinking champagne with the gothic bunny himself. Khan's a torch singer in a greasepaint clown suit, ready to strap you in and take you to Hell. But don't worry, he'll bring you back in one piece after he's had his way with you, so enjoy the ride.

    Offworld

Offworld, Celldweller's fourth vocal-based studio album departs from the project's signature sound of aggressive guitars, blasting beats, and ass-kicking intensity and delivers a journey of sentimental feels and emotionally gripping tracks, showcasing the intimate songwriting side of project mastermind, Klayton.

The album's 10 tracks range from the soul searching How Little I Must Know, to the modern shoegazer Echoes, the somber a cappella Mother's Arms, to the acoustic guitar-driven The Great Divide, and the heavy, yet atmospheric vibe of The Last Night on Earth. The album begins and ends with the title track & reprise of Offworld, which gives the album a narrative backdrop as a sci-fi adventure of leaving the world behind - perhaps to explore a new one or join life on the other side, closing the album experience with a familiar Celldweller lyric... we will never die. Strap in and prepare to hit the launch button on this other-worldly adventure and go offworld tonight.

    Victory Lap

The first thing to know, if you want to know about Propagandhi, is that they came here to rock. Right from the snarling opening riff of their seventh album,Victory Lap, that much is clear. For everything else that swirls around the band now, and for the last 31 years - the politics, the people and, lately,a gnawing sense of despair - the sheer volume of it all hasn't changed.

Frontman Chris Hannah and bassist Todd Kowalski experienced a big change in the band when after nine years with Propagandhi, guitarist DavidThe Beaver Guillas left the band for a teaching position and the band added a new member , Sulynn Hago, a seasoned guitar-slinger from Tampa,Florida. (That said, Guillas is still all over Victory Lap, contributing licksto four songs.)

So what do you do, when you're an unapologetically political band in a time when political speech seems more fractured than it has been in years? When the darkness looms and the rapacious maws of power seem to devour more by the day? You can't stop the violence; you can't save the world. But neither can you stand to sit back, and just watch it all burn. So here's what you do: you strap up a guitar and get ready to rock.

    Oceana

Recognized by many as the premiere rock keyboardist of his generation, Derek Sherinian has performed for millions via Black Country Communion (of which he is a current member alongside Glenn Hughes, Jason Bonham, Joe Bonamassa), Dream Theater, Alice Cooper, Buddy Miles and as an off-stage performer accompanying KISS. He also enjoyed tenures with Billy Idol, Yngwie Malmsteen and many others.

Favoring a guitar heavy rock based approach to fusion ala one of his musical heroes Jeff Beck, his newest release, Oceana once again displays the power and energy Sherinian creates in the studio, setting him apart from most jazz fusion ensembles in the process. He displays the rare combination of being a musical chameleon, while maintaining his signature style in no matter what genre he is playing in. With Oceana, the stage is set for Sherinians inspiration to be propelled in to the mainstream.

Sherinian has carved out a niche for himself in the progressive metal scene. He has attracted the best players on Earth to his solo album sessions, some of whom include luminaries Al DiMeola, Steve Lukather, Yngwie Malmsteen, Slash, John Petrucci, John Sykes and Zakk Wylde. With Oceana, again an assemblage of some of the most talented players to ever strap on a guitar join Sherinian in the studio.

Steve Lukather once again collaborated with the keyboardist for the tracks Mulholland, Euphoria and Seven Sins. Former Planet X guitarist and fusion legend Tony MacAlpine laid down performances for Five Elements and Mercury 7. The one and only Steve Stevens is featured on Ghost Runner and the title track Oceana. Black Country Communion band mate Joe Bonamassa makes an appearance as well on I Heard That, while Doug Aldrich performs on El Camino Diablo. Simon Phillips performs all drums on Oceana, while Jimmy Johnson laid down the bass on all tracks outside of Ghost Runner and the title track which features Tony Franklin.

The 1970s saw the creation of keyboard legends, when titans including Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman and Jon Lord were superstars. It was a time when talent on the keys was not only appreciated, but celebrated in popular music. With Oceana, perhaps a rebirth is upon the precipice of change for the Santa Cruz-raised, Berklee School of Music educated Sherinian to witness a new dawn where keyboardists once again are heroes. Inevitably, it is only a matter of time before Sherinian is recognized as the premiere rock keyboardist of this generation.

    Ice On The Dune

It's exactly what electronic pop should sound like in 2013. Fresh, euphoric, youthful...it more than delivers on the promise of 2008 s million-selling debut Walking On A Dream and the fantastical imagery that made them a festival highlight wherever Steele strapped on his head-dress, said Q, awarding the album four stars in a lead review. MOJO noted, you can t help but be charmed by their puckish, wide-eyed enthusiasm for the redemptive power of pop. Nearly every track is powered by a room-rattling disco groove, observed Uncut, scoring it 8/10. But what makes DNA , Alive , Concert Pitch and the title song so irresistible is the way their silky melodies resolve into super-saturated Technicolor chorus hooks.

    Codes And Keys

    Import

Codes And Keys is the seventh studio album by Death Cab for Cutie, originally released in 2011. A much less guitar-centric album than the band ever made before, the band surprised the world with their compelling venture to new horizons.

As lead vocalist and guitarist Ben Gibbard stated: "It's not a guitar-based record. We've been into vintage keyboards and playing with that palette." Guitarist and producer Chris Walla stated: "Guitar is great; it's a really immediate, impulsive sort of instrument. But I think if we had strapped on guitars and gone into the studio with the intent of making a sort of live-ish sounding record, we definitely would've retreaded some of the territory that we were in for Narrow Stairs.

In 2011, the album received a Nomination in the 54th Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Music Album.

    Cosmic Priestess

For well over a decade now, Tia Carrera have been melting minds with their own twist on the '70s rock n' roll jam. Mostly improvised, each live show is more of an experience than a performance, transporting you from wherever you are to places you didn't even know existed.

Erik Conn, Jason Morales and now permanent member Jamey Simms have taken their music to a new level both live and in the studio. Simms and Morales switch instruments seamlessly, sometimes mid-jam while Conn whales on, taking the listener on a wild, mind altering ride.

Their new release Cosmic Priestess, Small Stone 2011, highlights these elements to near perfection, bringing to the music new depths and lengths. Whether you're strapped to a chassis of a Texas hot rod in Slave Cylinder, exploring the colorful world of a coral reef in Sand, Stone and Pearl or three quarters of the way through the near 33 minute Saturn Missile Battery, Tia Carrera's improvisational scores will not disappoint.

    Big Sky Country

From the opening strums of Big Sky Country, the newest album - 6th, overall - from Sweden's Sofia Talvik, you know you're in for an aural pleasure experience. Her sweet, rich and enveloping voice immediately draws you in and the fullness of the songs captures your attention, enhanced by the just-right production. Acoustic-based, melody-built - a fine, fine work. Even though this young lady is from Sweden, I'd place her at the forefront of the American vanguard. One listen will tell you why and how.

"Aha Aha" opens the album and straps you in for the ride down this dusty, sun-setting musical highway; "Big Sky Country" is a melodic and melancholic, near Irish-folk-feel singalong while "Dusty Heart, Empty Hand" is pure Nashville with its pedal steel runs and banjo. "Lullaby" is a sweet, gentle piano based track with interestingly contradictory lyrics (" everything's beautiful - still you wish you were dead "); "A Matter Of The Hearts" is a vocal showcase - you can hear the natural skill in her singing and the feeling she conveys; "Bonfire" is a uptempo acoustic piece (without percussion) that builds with dramatic (yet not overboard) flair. "Fairground" is an acoustic shuffle with beautiful background harmonies and one of the album's standouts; "So" closes out the album in a subdued yet emotional manner.

    In Person (Pure Pleasure)

Note: This issue is as the original vinyl album issue & contains all the dialogue from Ray and the stage promoter, along with audience participation.

I bought this LP, of the Atlanta concert, in 1960. It knocked me out then, and it knocks me out now. For me, this IS Ray Charles. In the intro to Night Time Is The Right Time Ray says, »... and Miss Marjorie Hendricks will help us out on vocals ...«, and boy, does she help out! Turn up the volume and strap yourself down.
The greatness of this album. Ray was touring with his band in the 50's, and they played at a concert in Herndon Stadium, Atlanta. An engineer at radio station WAOK recorded the occasion on a one track tape recorder using a single microphone. The recording was later played over the air. The response of the radio audience was overwhelming, resulting in the ultimate release of the Atlantic album. It is one of the most extraordinary albums of all time. First, the recording is amazing considering how it was recorded. The band is heard with perfect clarity and balance, and the audience is also picked up, and you can hear the shouting, whooping, the give and take with the audience, and the extraordinary energy in what was a typical concert of Ray Charles playing to his own audience. Many of the tunes were or became classics, known to every funk and blues musician in the country and to most of the population at large. Ray Charles was revered like no other musician.

This is the most cathartic of all Ray Charles' recordings. On two tracks, The Right Time and Tell The Truth-both shared with the Raelettes' lead singer, Marjorie Hendricks-the music transcends art to become powerfully shamanistic. It remains one of the greatest rhythm and blues albums of all time.

    • Ray Charles (piano, vocal)

    • Marcus Belgrave, John Hunt (trumpet)

    • David Newman (tenor saxophone)

    • Bennie Crawford (bassoon)

Recording: May 1959 at Herndon Stadium, Atlanta, Georgia, by Ivan Miles

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Dad Country

Nashville songwriter Jonny Fritz's work ethic and boldness have paid off in spades. It's been a big year for Jonny with opening stints for Alabama Shakes, Deer Tick, Dawes, Shooter Jennings and kudos from CMT and Rolling Stone, among many others. He signed his deal this week (he actually signed the deal with gravy at Nashville landmark Arnold's Country Kitchen), and his third full-length album, Dad Country, is set for release on April 16, 2013.

Produced by Jonny and Dawes' Taylor Goldsmith, recorded at Jackson Browne's Los Angeles studio and finished up in Music City, USA; this breakthrough album balances Jonny's trademark earthy humor and unfiltered worldview with some of his darkest material to date. Co-producer Goldsmith says, "Funny as they can be at moments, his songs access realities and experiences that we're all familiar with but sometimes fail to consider the depths of."
While immersing himself in the music world, Jonny began running marathons from Philadelphia to Barcelona and pounding out his signature leather works - the dog collars and guitar straps - seen all over Nashville and half the musical universe. He found himself in NYC for year trying to save a relationship, and its slow, painful unraveling (and demise) inspired Dad Country's bleakest, heartrending tracks, including "All We Do Is Complain" and "Have You Ever Wanted to Die."

These days, life has never been better for Jonny Fritz. He's back in Nashville again and putting down roots- and has even gone and bought himself a house. "It just keeps getting better. Now, the band is getting paid, I'm getting paid, everybody's happy, and we're packing 'em in when we play."
"This is the dream life. I couldn't really ask for anything else."

    Melted Toys

Melted Toys self-titled debut is released via Underwater Peoples. Culminating
three years after their acclaimed Washed & Dried EP rst unveiled the group's distinct blend of
hazy, plaintive pop and psychedelic electronica, the full-length reigns in squarely as the
group's most denitive vision yet. It comes on as a sort of sanctuary-in-transit, inspired both
by the shifting visions of dreams and global travel, so that each of the twelve passages icker
    and ame with equal impression.

Melted Toys is Stephen Harkins, Daniel Rosado, Brian Wakeeld, and Ole Haarstad. Their
casual bond laces the languid pop with an unpretentious melodic language. It's both downcast
and serene, resembling the catalog of mid-career FELT, where Maurice Deebank's somber leads
colored each and every detail, rather than just issuing showy statements at predictable intervals. Highlights along the album spark from timely synthesizer voicings as well, mixed in
fantastic contrast against the shadowy mid tones of Wakeeld's bass and Haarstad's metronomic, motorik drumming style.

The three-year wait for this debut irked followers and friend's close to the band, but it was
caused by one of the members leaving a laptop containing all the initial work on a San
Francisco BART train. So it goes, and Melted Toys seems to have used the guaw to their
advantage, as the band re-located to Los Angeles, and singer-guitarist Harkins ended up traveling to Beijing, Tokyo, and Taipei, where he wrote an additional half of the material.

Bummed Out signals the albums opening tone with a wiry lead from Rosado, a kind of
circuit-bent guitar hook that practically nishes Harkins' nodding out sentences. Further along
the rst side A Postcard unfurls the most somber portrait of the LP, but forgoes lulling in
self-importance by trodding against a snare heavy loop, and sneering delivery.

Tellingly, the lyrics to Horizon seem to underscore the album's themes of psychoactive and
physical escape: Here I'm standing right on the cusp / of what could be my life / when we're
strapped under pressure / we could go inside our minds, wherein Harkins ends the verse with
the line, There's a chance for us / LAX back to Beijing. There, Harkins consolidates Melted
Toys' psychedelia with wanderlust, and what's more, the album seems most apt for both these
extremes: music for headphones en route to self-discovery, or music for mental escape indoors,
where's there's nothing more to discover but music.

What's all the fuss about? If you've read any of the hundreds of articles in music mags and on the net about Linda Perhacs' sole 1970 LP Parallelograms, you'd be tempted to question its reputation. People talk about Parallelograms in much the same way that they talk about Nick Drake's Island albums, Swaddling Songs by Mellow Candle and Vashti Bunyan's sole LP for Phillips... as a life-changing musical experience, one that inspires them to create new works of art and to express their deepest emotions despite the risk. Sure, there's a lot of hyperbole out there about this record, and yet it's absolutely warranted. For just about 40 minutes, it will take you on a guided tour of a world that's far too beautiful to exist... but does.

Part of the effect of the album is in the incredibly sensitive production by soundtrack composer Leonard Rosenman. He facilitates some very non-traditional ideas and gets extraordinarily skilled musicians to execute them. Rosenman's willingness to work in intense collaboration with a wide-eyed studio novice speaks volumes about his desire to help create something truly original. Sundazed used a pristinely preserved master tape of the album as its source and meticulously remastered to reveal a deep and subtle soundscape that practically reinvents the listening experience even if you've heard Parallelograms a thousand times before. Listen to Steve Cohn's guitar lines and how they dance so delicately in and around Linda's vocal lines on songs like Dolphin. When you get to the end of side one, it's time to don the headphones. Every ride in the sonic theme park that is the song Parallelograms is free, and there are no lines!

As much as it's about the psychedelic production and gorgeous arrangements, it's about words. Linda Perhacs uses words like no one else, teasing and toying with them, spinning them into bright, joyous confections with her voice on songs like Porcelain Baked-Over Cast-Iron Wedding. Her words at times sound like ancient sacred poetry, translated for the first time into English and whispered in your ear by a true love. Listening to Call of the River and Delicious is as close as you'll ever get to hearing the Sirens' song without getting strapped to a mast first!

People like Devendra Banhart, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo & Thomas Bangalter (Daft Punk) and Kieran Hebden (Four Tet) have expressed their love of these recordings, and they've taken direct inspiration from it for their current work. Parallelograms has also encouraged a close re-examination of the genre. Let's hope record collectors never stop searching for the kind of magic they hear in Parallelograms. For psychedelic folk, you can start at perfect and go from there.

This Sundazed release is the definitive edition of this essential album.

    The Band Perry

Daddy rocked us to sleep with the Rolling Stones; Mama woke us up with Loretta Lynn. So we get it honest. - Kimberly Perry

Inheriting a cross-pollinated love of country and rock & roll from their parents, The Band Perry - siblings Kimberly, Reid, and Neil Perry - say that they bleed the bright red blood of American music. The three have always felt the drive to perform and create music, sweating out the summers in Mobile, Alabama playing in any dusty roadhouse or church that would have them. Kimberly strapped on her first Gibson - and fronted her first high school band - at age 15, employing Reid, then 10, and Neil, only 8, as her roadies. Changing guitar strings and polishing cymbals for their big sister lost its charm after awhile, so the brothers formed their own band, opening for Kimberly's band.

My bass and I've been attached at the hip since I was 10 years old, says Reid. While most of my friends were playing little league, I was sitting in my room learning Rolling Stones' and Beatles' bass lines. It's really all I've ever known. Even as the three worked in different bands, the siblings would spend nights at home playing together: I remember sitting out on our front porch singing old Hank Williams and Bobbie Gentry songs in three-part harmony, hoping to channel the spirits of old country through musical sÉance while fighting off the southern Alabama mosquitoes, says Kimberly. We always knew we'd take the stage together - all we were waiting on was the right moment. That moment came in July of 2005, when - after years of writing together - the siblings decided to join forces as one band. The Band Perry was then invited by the Coca-Cola Bottling Company to open all of the dates on their New Faces Of Country Tour that year.

In the summer of 2008, after spending a few years on the road honing their sound, TBP met longtime Garth Brooks manager Bob Doyle. Partnering with Bob and Josh Pegram, The Band Perry spent the fall and winter of 2008 writing in Nashville and collecting songs for their first country recording session.

The three of us bring different strengths into the writing room, Neil points out. Kimberly carries in a bag of melodies and lyrics, Reid always has some really great musical ideas in his back pocket, and I bring in a sense of humor and some thread that ties it all together.

The new recordings caught the ears of Scott Borchetta and Jimmy Harnen, the CEO and President of Republic Nashville, signing to the new label in the summer of 2009.

When talking about The Band Perry, each member of the trio stresses how much family figures into the mix: Reid, Neil and I share genes and a musical pedigree, Kimberly explains. We read the same classics and cook from the same recipes. With all of our likenesses though, I believe it's our distinctions that stir up the magic when we create. When the three of us sit down to write songs together, we pull from all of our individual perspectives and happenstances to create the most interesting song concoctions.

There's a tightness between the three of us that goes way beyond even best friends, Neil adds. Family vocal harmonies can't be fabricated. And, besides - the three of us know that through the thick and thin of life and the music business, we're watching after each other.

Blood runs thick. The music business can be hard, but the three of us are committed not only to our lives in music, but to living them together, Reid says. I think the security of knowing that about each other allows us to be uninhibited when we create. It's a democracy. It's a safe haven.

We've walked a long way to find your ears, Kimberly Perry finishes with a grin. So play us long and play us loud. The Band Perry is here, and we just have so darn much to say.

    Tigermilk

Tigermilk is simply gorgeous, an unaffected debut equal to the Smiths' finest work, and seemed to arrive fully formed out of nowhere in May 1996. In songs like the pastoral, shimmering The State I Am In and the wonderfully naive We Rule the School, bandleader Stuart Murdoch had already laid the seeds that would later come to such full, poignant fruition on If You're Feeling Sinister and The Boy with the Arab Strap. The 10 songs here have such a natural pop sensibility, such a grace and resonance, it's hard now to believe that Tigermilk was only originally intended as a small-time project between seven Glaswegian friends (the original vinyl release was limited to 1,000 copies). Whimsical, surreal, and beautiful, this reissue is well worth the wait. --Everett True

Fold Your Hands Child You Walk Like a Peasant

Belle & Sebastian's songs have always been instantly familiar while simultaneously original and unexpected. Listening to Belle & Sebastian, you have the inexplicable feeling that you have heard these songs somewhere before, filed away with the mothballs of your youth, or that, maybe, you have stumbled upon long-lost tapes of a young Nick Drake being backed by Village Green Preservation Society-era Kinks under the production of some low-rent Phil Spector. The fact that Belle & Sebastian have arrived at their distinct, anachronistic sound quite naturally and by accident is a large part of their charm. It's not surprising, then, that Belle & Sebastian's fourth full-length record, Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant, has arrived with the band's sincerity intact. What is surprising, however, is the record itself: an eclectic mix of the soulful and the sublime, something of a departure for the band. Unlike their last record, the amazing Boy with the Arab Strap, the songs here are not instantly recognizable, but more subtle. The hooks don't automatically grab; instead, the songs' intent is to break you down, seeping into your bloodstream and working on you from the inside out like an infection.

The eclectic feel of the record owes itself to the fact that this is, by far, Belle & Sebastian's most record by committee affair yet, with songwriting contributions from several different band members and songs that seem to have been built up from simple ideas into lush orchestral pieces with the musical input of the band's many different instrumentalists. While Stuart Murdoch still writes and sings the bulk of the material, he collaborates with bandmates on a number of songs, including the delicately soulful Don't Leave the Light on Baby, written with keyboardist Chris Geddes. Unfortunately, songs by Belle & Sebastian cofounder and bassist Stuart David are not to be found on Fold Your Hands (he left the band during the recording). However, violinist Sarah Martin contributes her first song with the haunting Waiting for the Moon to Rise, while cellist Isobel Campbell adds the record's most surprising track, Beyond the Sunrise, sounding like a lost Leonard Cohen gem with its spare and fragile arrangement. Guitarist Stevie Jackson, who contributed some of the better songs on Arab Strap, manages only one on this outing, but it's one of the best: The Wrong Girl, a tale of misplaced love juxtaposed against swinging Spector- like strings and horns. By the time the band reaches Women's Realm, an infectious, life-affirming romp, the record's message, although never spelled out, is clear: Through all the melancholy and solitude and terrible things that could go wrong, life is still worth fighting for. --Paul Ducey

How To Get To Heaven From Scotland

Last time we heard from Aidan Moffat (Arab Strap), it was with the wonderful, darkly humorous, spoken word album and book package I Can Hear Your Heart, which received rave reviews upon its February 2008 release. Less than a year later, the 35 year-old Moffat is back in a new guise, as frontman of Aidan Moffat and the Best Ofs.

It's not really a band, says Moffat, So much as an open-door club where anyone with a talent for something I like the sound of is welcome. There's no line-up in any traditional sense and members come and go according to their availability, but for this album, the band includes Stevie Jones (Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan's band) and Alun Woodward (ex-Delgados/Lord Cut-Glass.) How To Get To Heaven From Scotland was recorded simultaneously with I Can Hear Your Heart.

I decided it was time that I attempted to write some positive love songs, which is incredibly difficult to do if you want to avoid cliche and repetition, explains Moffat. You have to try to make them both personal and universal, which also can be quite difficult; you have to try to forget other people are going to hear them while also making sure it will appeal to an audience. There's a lot more sunshine and happy endings on this record, plus a song about my grandfather's non-existent ghost and a lullaby about the terror of impending fatherhood. Hopefully I've managed to keep it at least diverting for the 37 minutes it lasts.

    Less Bling, More Zing

We chose a powder-coated aluminum housing for these headphones because the added mass means smoother transitions from the lowest frequency range to the highest. You might also enjoy the authentic 60's style, which goes perfectly with skinny ties and sullen glances. The genuine top-grain leather padded head-strap is Brylcreem resistant.

The Top of the Range Prestige Series Headphone. The new SR325e has a new driver and cable design. The added mass from the metal housing minimizes transient distortions. With the new 8 conductor cable design you will notice superb control and stability of the upper and lower range of the frequency spectrum, with both supporting Grado's world renowned midrange. The SR325e will produce a sound that is pure Grado, with warm harmonic colors, rich full bodied vocals, excellent dynamics, and an ultra-smooth top end.

... I close my eyes, and suddenly the bells, the bows and drum sticks are in front of me, conveying more than sound, but ultimately their very existence through an aural archive of this sonic bliss.

    Life/Thrills

Acting as a respite from the celebrated strains of modern Australian
underground music, Lower Plenty manage a deconstruction of folk
music like none other: unsettled, unforgiving, unconcerned with
what came before or what's to follow. Acoustic guitars shuffle in
and out of phase with one another, double-tracked vocals hover
above in careful meter, brushed snare rattles the very frame of their
sound, and then everything shifts again, and again. Comfort's not
long here, though beauty is maintained; melodies start sweet but
turn inward, wane nostalgic and wax without resolve. Lyrics pawn
regret out of the ordinary, drifting in and out of your consciousness
like something heard in passing and reconstituted in a dream. Their
sound demands your attention, to the point where gloved, spectral
hands could very easily jump out of their music and grab you by the
    sides of your head.

Life/Thrills is the Melbourne group's third full-length, and their
collective experience (members play in a host of other bands, not
limited to Total Control, The UV Race, Exhaustion, Deaf Wish and
Dick Diver) will leave you thoroughly unprepared for the beautiful
confusion suggested by these ten songs, which seem to have the
power of slowing and even stopping time. Suitable comparisons to
this music are as disparate as early Cat Power, Arab Strap, the
Shrimper roster ca. 1992, the Sun City Girls, and the late '60s/early
'70s output of the Red Crayola, but as with much truly original
music, Lower Plenty resists direct comparison and defies
expectation. Their shambling, discordant presence will relieve you
of any preconceptions - this is one best experienced alone, as the
sun fades into the horizon for the night.
