Streets Of Fire'
Live at the Old WaldorfLimited Edition Of 660 Copies On Gold Vinyl
This limited edition double-LP release once again proves that there were very, very few bands in the late '70s that could match the stylistic sweep, musicianly chops, and quality of repertoire wielded by Todd Rundgren & Utopia. This August 5, 1978 set at the Old Waldorf in San Francisco captures the band at the beginning of an extensive U.S. tour, but it had already been a busy year of touring for Todd, as back in May he had assembled an all-star band for residencies at the Bottom Line in New York City and the Roxy in Los Angeles.
Performances from those shows that (along with a portion of an August 23 Utopia date from this tour) comprised the release of the double live LP Back to the Bars in December 1978, and fans of that album will find much to treasure here on this well-recorded release taken from the evening's stereo master tapes. Here you get a chance to hear Utopia back Todd on songs, like "Black and White" and "The Last Ride" (an epic version!), from which they were absent on Back to the Bars, and Live at the Old Waldorf offers such Utopia favorites as "Trapped," "Abandon City," "Back on the Street," and "Gangrene" from 1977's Oops! Wrong Planet that did not appear on Bars. Even more importantly, the band is on fire this night, displaying the rare mixture of note-perfect arrangements and improvisatory verve that made Todd Rundgren & Utopia such a must-see concert draw during the era.
One last note about this release: because Todd was such a dynamic live performer, there have been a series of authorized live "bootlegs" that have come out on CD in recent years, but very few have come out on LP; we have cherry picked what just may be the best of the bunch and put it on double gold vinyl inside a gatefold package limited to 660 copies. It belongs on your shelf right next to your other Rundgren records from the era don't miss it!LP

Street SongsThe late Rick James was as notorious for his wild lifestyle as he was for his music, mixing pop, rock, R&B and sleazy funk. Street Songs, his 1981 album for Motown features his most enduring hit, Super Freak, sampled most famously on MC Hammers Grammy Award winning U Can't Touch This, as well as by Jay-Z on the track Kingdome Come. Boasting cameos by Stevie Wonder on harmonica and The Temptations on backing vocals (who included Ricks uncle, Melvin Frank), the album is loosely a concept piece about ladies of the night. Fire AwayFire Away is the Grammy Award-winning bands fifth studio full length. Produced by acclaimed producer Tony Berg, Fire Away features eleven new Ozomatli songs, including the first single Its Only Paper, currently being serviced to radio. Ozomatlis music, a collision of hip hop and salsa, dancehall and cumbia, samba and funk, merengue and comparsa, East LA R&B and New Orleans second line, Jamaican ragga and Indian raga, has long followed a key mantra: it will take you around the world by taking you around the city of LA.
This certainly resonated with producer Tony Berg (Aimee Mann, Pete Yorn), who describes working with Ozomatli like visiting seven continents simultaneously. Berg believes the Fire Away sessions captured the spirit of the bands live show without being a live album, and he sensed Ozomatli stretching themselves in the studio, adding each of the members had grown as a writer and as a musician. I think Fire Away reflects their true songwriting talents, everyones point-of-view was captured. That is the spirit of Ozomatli. Theyre pan-cultural, and they somehow manage to be raucous and thoughtful at the same time.1. Are You Ready?

Fire From The Evening SunPHILM, the temperamental, highly gifted brainchild of Dave Lombardo certainly did not come to fruition
overnight. Years of life lessons and rhythmical adventures slowly molded and manipulated his latest creation for
the musical misfits of the world.
As a multi-genre labyrinth, PHILM resonates not only the individual symphonic personalities of its members, but
their uniquely agile bond in instrumentation as a whole.
Front-man Gerry Nestler, noted for his undeniable skill and rapport with his guitar, is best known for his work
with progmetallists, Civil Defiance. An impassioned vocalist, his musical journey has also found him gaining
much respect for his lyrical prowess. Nestler describes PHILMs music as, "Heavy but sensitive, powerful and
atmospheric." He further elaborated, saying ". The music of PHILM is channeled through the many different
influences of drum and bass, expressionism, and underground that is indigenous to the street, Nestler states.
There are many different things that Dave and I have been into that have contributed to the vision of PHILM.
Pancho's highly skilled bass playing, chordal color and shape have helped expand the overall sound
instrumentation and groove. Dave Lombardo's drumming goes without comparison.
Bassist, Pancho Tomaselli, a long-time member of funk rockers, War and most recently, Tower of Power is
sought after for his aggressively malleable, yet smooth way around his bass guitar. Drummer, Dave Lombardo,
is most widely known for his legendary work with a band he co-developed at the young age of 17, SLAYER. His
work with Mike Patton (Fantomas), John Zorn (Bladerunner), Grip Inc., and many others, leaves no room for
questioning his legendary status as one of the most skilled and innovative drummers in the world. Justifiably
typecast to the genre he helped trail-blaze, it is certainly a shock to Lombardo enthusiasts to see his infamous
drum set now scaled down to a four piece kit. But, the depth of his musical aptitude is much more than what
has come to be known as his signature sound. His prodigious skill and affinity for heavy, penetrating grooves is
oddly taken to another level in his work with this riveting trio. To quote Tomaselli, "It's like playing with the
seven, not four, horses of the Apocalypse behind you."
PHILMs music is a dense, unholy convergence of tones and discords." Lombardo states, " We tend to live on the
heavy side, but we also touch on haunting, desolate, ambient sounds.
These three innovative musicians have masterfully revived the concept of the Power Trio. Often improvised,
their live set can find their audience entranced by a raw, tonal journey that is both awe-inspiring and thrilling1. Train

Stand For Something Or Die For Nothing
Boston. Titletown. The Cradle of Liberty. Beantown. From popular neighborhoods like Jamaica Plain and Davis Square to the more hardscrabble quarters like Mattapan and Roxbury, Boston is a complex fabric of people, cultures, and viewpoints. None more Boston are punk rock outfit, Street Dogs. From the air they breathe and the food they eat to the communities they serve-frontman Mike McColgan is a Boston Fire Department 911 Dispatcher and drummer Pete Sosa is an honorary member of the City of Boston-and the values they uphold, Street Dogs exemplify their city and what it has to offer the world. Across the group's storied 16-year career, they've hit hard, spoke the truth, and walked the walk. New album, Stand for Something or Die for Nothing, is proof the Bostonians continue to live and be empowered by their punk rock, tell-it-like-it-is ethos.
"Anyone who has ever listened to our group knows we are Bostonians to the bone," says bassist Johnny Rioux. "We all love the city. It's our home. I think our fans abroad get a window into our city and what it is like to grow up here and live here through a multitude of different life experiences [from our music]."
Indeed, Sicut Patribus Sit Street Dogs Nobis. But the primary motivator to pick up where 2010's lauded self-titled left off wasn't to continue waving the sky blue at the Boston Common, but to sound the alarm that our leadership and the affluent are taking advantage of society. The wedge is being driven between classes, deeper and deeper, where the rich get richer and the poor are afforded fewer choices in life, like education, opportunity, and the pursuit of a good life, respected liberties, and unquestionable happiness. This gift, as it were, has given the Street Dogs have plenty to write about eight years after their Hellcat Records' swansong.
"The dumbing down of America is a reason to write songs in 2018," Rioux asserts. "People need to wake the fuck up and realize the rich won't drain the swamp or look after the working man and woman. [So] we hit on familiar turf and we go outside our zone as well on Stand for Something or Die for Nothing. It's tough to contain my excitement for this record and our fans are going to love it. Everyone stepped way up."
If there's one thing that sets the self-titled apart from Stand for Something or Die for Nothing it's the songwriting. Tracks like "Other Ones," "Angels Calling," "Working Class Heroes," and "Never Above You, Never Below You" show Street Dogs at their finest: loud, abrasive, confrontational, and unifying. In fact, there's not one track on the group's sixth full-length that doesn't convey brotherhood, common values, and the ability to stand together against anyone with aims to disfigure or disband their raised fist.
"On Stand for Something or Die for Nothing, we took our time making sure everything was worked out as well as it possibly could be with multiple re-writes of songs and painstaking takes," says Rioux. "The band wrote this record together as a unit. This is the most full-band record we have ever made with everyone contributing. It's our best record. I really believe that and all the hard-painstaking work we put in people will hear and feel. With respects to the self-titled record we were moving at very quick and prolific pace back then. That record came together fast and is special."
Recorded at Woolly Mammoth Studios, Sugarland Studio, and Q Division Studios with Rioux in the producer's chair, mix master Sean Cahalin at the desk, and mastering ace Jeff Lipton navigating, Stand for Something or Die for Nothing is a punk rock album for the new era. Rioux was careful to balance the DIY tenets of punk with the professional requirements of recording an album. The result was hard won, but Stand for Something or Die for Nothing is a punk rock triumph, with tracks like "The Comeback Zone," "Lest We Forget," and the title track delivering modern-day anthems that kick ass and take names.
"Other than Sean being a total professional and super-proficient, there aren't really any specific stories to Stand for Something or Die. I've always has had a hand in the production of our records and I can be demanding in the studio! That all said, I think we have our best sounding record to date. It has all the energy of our live shows in it. Fans will immediately tell it's us when they hear it."
While the definition of punk rock has its divisions, Street Dogs are, no doubt, part of the genre's proud history. Stand for Something or Die is undoubtedly punk rock. Using Rioux's definition (or not): "What's punk to me is people living how they want to not how they are told to."

XXThe XX arrive with their debut album XX, a whole new sound of love, loss and longing. The XX are a London quartet, featuring the dual lead vocals of Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim (who also play lead guitar and bass guitar), Baria Qureshi (keyboards and guitar) and Jamie Smith (beats, MPC sampler). These four twenty year olds are childhood friends who formed while attending southwest London's Elliot School, an academy whose alumni also includes such acclaimed boundary-pushers as Burial, Four Tet and Hot Chip. Bonding over a shared love of dark, emotive '80s guitar sounds and the high-end sheen of American R&B, The XX's unique sound befits a band whose wide range of influences include everything from Aaliyaah to Cocorosie, Rihanna to The Cure, Missy Elliot to The Chromatics and Mariah Carey to The Pixies.
In an effort not to draw too much distance from the DIY aesthetic of their early demos, which were recorded in their bedrooms, they recorded their debut album XX under no one's watch, other than engineer Rodaidh McDonald, at XL Recordings' west London in-house studio. The result is a wash of sexy, coy, and sparse rhythms and melodies the likes of Robert Smith, Massive Attack and The Streets.

Spirit (Speakers Corner)The wise saying »spiritus ubi vult spirat« (»the spirit blows where it wills«) is interpreted by Earth, Wind & Fire with impressive clarity. Gentle sounds and modest gestures are foreign to the colourful Afro group, who in their live performances welded together ancient Egyptian Pharaonic mysticism with urban street life. That this spirit, which is found in the LP title and blows all the way through it, was guaranteed not only by the exuberant wind section in the group's early years. With regard to rhythm, too, the band rolls out almost everything to pave the floor with powerful disco patterns, not forgetting the elegant and finely controlled falsetto, which adds further pep. Out of all this came the highly cultivated and expressive vocals as in Imagine, carefully balanced ballads (Burnin' Bush), as well as a powerful sound that is so good for dancing to, as in the memorable number Saturday Nite. An extremely wide range of musical genres was brought together by Earth, Wind & Fire in a big-band sound that is »innovative yet popular, precise yet sensual, calculated yet galvanizing« (Rolling Stone Magazine).
This Speakers Corner LP was remastered using pure analogue components only, from the master tapes through to the cutting head. All royalties and mechanical rights have been paid.

About Speakers Corner
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.1. Getaway

NeptuneNeptune is the major label debut album from Boston progressive folk duo, Tall Heights. Neptune is the follow up to 2015's Holding On, Holding Out EP which was met with critical acclaim from outlets like NPR and The Wall Street Journal who compared their emotive harmonies and poignant lyrics to the likes of Simon & Garfunkel, Sigur Ros and Bon Iver. Of particular note is the track "Spirit Cold", the lead single from the forthcoming release.
The multi-talented singer songwriters, composers and instrumentalists featuring Paul Wright on cello/vocals and Tim Harrington on acoustic guitar/vocals got their start busking on the streets of Boston, growing up in a neighboring town in Massachusetts. Neptune is a far lusher construct than those early acoustic days - along with pristine and emotive vocal harmonies, there's subtly chugging electric guitar and a spare descending bassline on "Iron in the Fire," ethereal synthesizers and a spacious drum part on "Spirit Cold," a brittle splash of percussion to open "Backwards and Forwards" and feedback created by two cellphones on "Cross My Mind."1. Universal Breakdown BluesUniversal Breakdown Blues is a modern urban blues/rock offering that reflects the soul of blues mastermind Popa Chubby. The album features 12 brand new tracks that capture the fire and energy of his live shows. It represents an entirely new level of his tempestuous, soulful playing. Popa puts it all into the simple language of music and invites us all to the party!
'This is the blues now. It's the people's blues. The blues belongs to the people and I get to sing it. If there's one thing I want people to know about me, it's that I'm a survivor, says Popa Chubby. 'Here's my story: My dad died when I was seven. I was abandoned and raised myself. I moved to New York City when I was 18 and started playing music. I got a huge heroin habit and ended up strung out on the streets until I was in my early twenties. I started playing again and got away from drugs and never went back, and then I got into the New York blues scene of the early '90s, and here I am today.'

ADAD-FAM-8316xLittle Howlin' Wolf
The GuardianLittle Howlin' Wolf is a street musician, bluesman, actor, storyteller and truth seeker. He is also a true outsider, whose wrenching soulfulness and fire-brained intensity have been captured in a breadcrumb trail of confounding and intentionally obscure self-released records. In the late 1960s Wolf -- born James Pobiega in 1950 -- was already a saxophone wailing fixture at the legendary Chicago hangout, Maxwell Street Market. By the mid-1980s he released nearly three dozen 45s. Those singles are sprawling journeys into Wolf's world vision, as told through his gravelly voice and an array of instruments in styles and influences not limited to: American Indian, Polish and gypsy folk musics, Voodoo, vocal chants, blues, calypso and avant jazz. Often, it's all filtered through overdubbed abstraction. Wolf issued two LPs collecting some of those singles -- The Guardian (1982) and Cool Truth (1985) -- both now reissued by Family Vineyard. The Guardian is a baffling, hyper-creative statement recorded between 1976 and 1982. It's also vastly sincere and some of Wolf's most accessible and deeply emotional songs, yet it orbits a universe known only by the likes of Captain Beefheart or Albert Ayler. This reissue features replicated LP jackets, with Wolf's original transcendent liner notes, and labels bearing the Solidarity Solidarnosc Records name; never before seen photos; and new essay by ethnomusicologist Ian Nagoski.1. The Sacrament Of Sin (Pre-Order)After spilling gallons of blood and fighting tirelessly, and only two albums with Napalm, Powerwolf shot straight to the pole position of the official German album charts (and another album made it into the top three!). After selling out venue after venue and thrilling bigger and bigger hordes of fans, the time is right for a new chapter: The Sacrament Of Sin which offers a dozen metal psalms forged for all eternity!
Powerwolf entered Fascination Street Studios in Örebrö, Sweden starting in January 2018 to work on their seventh manifesto together with renowned producer Jens Bogren (Opeth, Arch Enemy, Amon Amarth). The result is brimming with the Germans` trademark sound, and yet the band have recorded their boldest and most adventurous album to date! 'Where the wild wolves have gone' even marks the first ballad in Powerwolf history - whereas 'Nightside of Siberia' does the exact opposite and turns out to be one of the heaviest tunes the fivepiece have ever written. 'Incense And Iron' simply MUST be part of every future setlist with its folky nature and anthemic catchiness; and epic single 'Fire & Forgive' brilliantly melts infectious melodies into timeless, heavy shredding.

Scratch My Back...And I'll Scratch YoursImport
Rather than make a traditional covers record, I thought it would be much more fun to create a new type of project in which artists communicated with each other and swapped a song for a song, i.e. you do one of mine and I'll do one of yours, hence the title - Scratch My Back - And I'll Scratch Yours. Peter Gabriel
Scratch My Back And I'll Scratch Yours is a series of song exchanges in which Gabriel and other leading artists reinterpret each other's songs. The first half of this double album, titled Scratch My Back, was originally released in 2010. Gabriel covers work by seasoned superstars like David Bowie, Paul Simon and Lou Reed, but he also took on marvelous interpretations of work by younger acts like Arcade Fire, Bon Iver and Radiohead. In 2013, most of these artists returned the favour on And I'll Scratch Yours.
The reciprocating artists opted for differing approaches to Peter's songs. A few chose to radically reinterpret the original material, in the process leaving it barely recognisable - Lou Reed's snarling Solsbury Hill or the frighteningly futuristic version of Mother Of Violence by Brian Eno, co-writer of David Bowie's Heroes covered by Gabriel on Scratch My Back. Other contributors include Arcade Fire (Games Without Frontiers), Elbow (Mercy Street) and Regina Spektor (Blood Of Eden).LP1

Founded in Chicago in 2002, Sweet Cobra has toured with Russian Circles, Pelican, Black Cobra, and Young Widows. Split label release with Hawthorne Street/Three Floyds Brewing.1. Complaints

Pop CrimesRowland S. Howard started playing in teenage bands in late
70s Melbourne. Whilst still a callow youth he wrote "Shivers," an
undisputed classic, (quietly ignoring the fact that Rowland perhaps
doesn't see it that way and approaches the song as if it was written
by someone else). The song was recorded by his band The Boys Next
Door who mutated into the Birthday Party and then relocated to
Europe to wage a guerrilla campaign against the trivialities of the
80s, until they turned their fire upon themselves and disintegrated
Whilst his former associates have moved on to weekend colour
supplement acceptability, Rowland has commonly been perceived
as the banished wastrel prince... exiled to a squalid garret on the
colder edges of the kingdom, accompanied only by his dreams and
inclinations. His demeanour (pale, gaunt, stick thin, sickly, dark
humoured, fatalistic) has perhaps inadvertently added far too much
credence to this interpretation of events. The shadow of this myth
has seemingly obscured the sheer volume of his creativity and the
singularity of his musical vision.
Always respected by his peers, a scan through Rowland's
catalogue of work sees him allied with the likes of Lydia Lunch,
Thurston Moore, Wim Wenders, Barry Adamson, The Gun Club, Nikki
Sudden, the Beasts Of Bourbon, the Hungry Ghosts and HTRK.
Rowland's own ensemble These Immortal Souls gun their engines
in the ill-lit background and the legacy of his work with The Birthday
Party scores the skin of successive generations of musicians and
But it's a history Rowland would gleefully put a match to. With or
without it Rowland S. Howard would make tense, beautiful music,
would deliver us his personal vision of the world, would create Pop
Long-time faithful friends Mick Harvey (who played with Rowland
for over 30 years), JP Shilo (Hungry Ghosts) and producer Lindsay
Gravina make for a formidable backline. Out front the guitar playing
couldn't be any one else but Rowland S Howard and his weary,
almost journalistic vocal delivery dispassionately sits amidst the
sweaty panic of the music, adding to the ill ease.
The band lurch in to Pop Crimes as if dragging a rain soaked body
across a muddy field. The ghosts of Lee Hazlewood, Snatch, Sergio
Leone, The Shangri-Las and nameless guys from a never known chain
gang watch on. Within the first few breaths Rowland references
Stalin, Calvary and genocide, whilst razoring guitar lines the current
crop of post-punk revisionists could only fantasize about.
"Shut Me Down" is Rowland at his most romantic, though
inevitably it's shot through with loss and longing. If only Dusty
Springfield were alive to revel in its drama. Talk Talk's 'Life's What
You Make It' is re-imagined as if it had risen from the grind of a
Detroit auto plant's assembly line. '(I Know) A Girl Called Johnny'
sees Jonnine D from HTRK sidle up to the microphone for a duet
that will melt even the coldest of hearts. It's a glorious missing link
between the New York girl group sound and the street smarts of
Suicide. Townes Van Zandt's "Nothin" is given a chilling tenement
building transformation. "Wayward Man" has the band wailing like
alarm sirens before Rowland emerges at his most contemplative
with the gorgeous, fragile build of "Ave Maria." Final track "The
Golden Age Of Bloodshed" takes the album out on a swaggering,
swashbuckling epic, with salvation slipping through the narrator's
fingers.1. (I Know) A Girl Called Jonny

What It Is To Burn - X LiveFormed in Temecula, CA
in 1999, the quintet of Nate
Barcalow, Alex Linares, Randy
Strohmeyer, Alex Pappas
and Derrek Doherty known
as Finch, are labeled as the
fore-fathers of the "screamo"
and post hardcore genre. Influenced by the hard leanings
of bands like Deftones and
Hum, and the pop sensibilities of Jimmy Eat World and
Blink-182, Finch began a sonic
revolution in popular music
that still echoes today.
The band signed to Drive-Thru
Records in 2001 after guitarist Strohmeyer sent out a demo to owners Richard and Stephanie Reines while he was working on the label's street team.
Drive-Thru saw something in the Southern California band and decided
to take a risk on a sound that was more aggressive than their current range
of artists. Their first EP, Falling into Place sold more than 6,000 copies
within the first few months and gave them the momentum they needed to
create their groundbreaking first album What It Is To Burn. Recorded in
the winter of 2001, What It Is To Burn was released the following spring.
The album produced three radio hits, charted Number 1 on the Billboard
Heatseekers chart and 188 on the Billboard 200.
They spent years touring in support of What It Is To Burn, sharing
the stage with the likes of Glassjaw, The Starting Line, Yellowcard, and
Blink-182, among others. In 2005, they decided it was time for a follow up,
and went in a more artsy direction with Say Hello To Sunshine. Drummer
Alex Pappas left the band and was replaced by Marc Allen. After years of
heavy touring, the band went on a short hiatus, rejoining one another in
2007 with new bassist Daniel Wonacott to record their self-titled EP. Critics
hailed the EP as a return to glory while still adding to their old sound.
Finch would tour off the release for a few years until deciding on another
break in 2009.
In 2013, Finch reunited to its nearly original lineup and announced that
they would embark on the What It Is To Burn Ten Year Anniversary
tour. The group performed the full-length in its entirety with a few extra
bonuses for fans along the way. One concert in particular in Pomona, CA
was filmed and recorded and will be released via Tragic Hero Records. With no bad blood and everything firing on all fronts, it's hard to
tell what will come next for Finch, but one thing remains certain: all eyes

There's A Riot Going OnThere's a riot going on. You don't need me, or Yo
La Tengo, to tell you that. These are dark times, in our
heads as much as in the streets. It's easy to lose contact
with the ground. Confusion and anxiety intrude
into daily life and cause you to lose your compass.
There are times that call for anthems, something to lift
you out of your slump and put fire in your feet. And
sometimes what is needed is a balm, a sound that will
wrap around you and work out the knots in your neck.
For Yo La Tengo, this is a slow-motion action
painting. Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley, and James
McNew did it all themselves, in their rehearsal studio,
with no engineer and no complicated equipment
(John McEntire later assisted in mixing). They did not
rehearse together beforehand; they turned on the recorder
and let things coalesce. Songs came together
over long stretches, sometimes as much as a year going
by between parts. You'd never guess this, since
the layers are joined with such a liquid brush. You'd
imagine most of the songs had sprung forth whole,
since they will enter your head that way. Within two
listens you will be powerless to resist the magnetic
draw of "Shades of Blue," will involuntarily hear "She
May, She Might" on your internal jukebox first thing in
the morning and "Let's Do It Wrong" late at night.
While there's a riot going on, Yo La Tengo will
remind you what it's like to dream. The sound burbles
and washes and flows and billows. If records were
dedicated to the cardinal elements, this one would be
water. There are shimmery hazes, spectral rumbles, a
flash of backward masking. You are there. And even if
your mind is not unclouded--shaken, misdirected, out
of words and out of time--you can still float, ride the
waves of an ocean deeper than your worries, above
the sound and above the Sound.LP 1

Neck Of The WoodsNeck of the Woods, the third album from Los Angeles, CA fuzz-rockers Silversun Pickups, started with a chance meeting when the band stumbled across Grammy-winning producer Jacknife Lee (R.E.M., U2, Weezer) while recording guest vocals for a Snow Patrol track. But band frontman Brian Aubert is quick to point out that, in fact, pretty much everything about the album from producer to studio location right down to its found-photo album art, has been serendipitous. It's bizarre, the affable singer/guitarist explains. We can't take credit for any of it. It just accidentally happened.
For one example of a happy accident, Aubert was surprised to discover Lee's home studio was smack in the middle of the Topanga Canyon woods, minutes from where the singer grew up. I hadn't been back in years, he recalls. I thought it would be fun to walk down my old street. It was like playing with fire a little bit. So much came back that I had forgotten about and it was a really emotional experience. I just realized this place and the feelings I had are still ingrained in me.
Aubert says the songs sound like a horror movie, all of them beginning to percolate while he was country-hopping and people-watching during a European vacation. (2009's) Swoon was more about what I was feeling at that particular time, he says, whereas with this one, I wanted to see what built me. It was learning why I am the way I am.1. Skin Graph

Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?They say there's no time like the present; what they really mean is there's no such thing as the present. Five seconds into the future will be five seconds in the past once you finish reading this sentence. Translated into rock 'n' roll, terms, it means you're either ahead of your time or past your prime. And we're cool with that. We like categories and demographics and timelines because they allow us not to think; everything can be explained with the check of a box or a dot on a graph. But Metric don't let you off that easy. Their measures are decidedly cubist: eternal, multilayered portraits of instantaneous moments, the luminous blur of street life rendered as a freeze-tableaux, daily rituals portrayed in a fantastical light. This is music born out of sly, considered observation instead of gratuitous introspection - which makes it refreshingly anomalous in an era when so much popular music fudges the line between self-absorption and self-parody. Their debut album, OLD WORLD UNDERGROUND, WHERE ARE YOU NOW? launched Metric's career and helped to usher in a wave (or New Wave) of Canadian indie bands such as Broken Social Scene and Arcade Fire. They have since gone on to sell over a million singles and 500,000 albums worldwide. Finally available on vinyl, the album sounds as urgent and timeless today as it did in 2003 and like all of Metric's music to date, OLD WORLD UNDERGROUND, WHERE ARE YOU NOW? isn't so much a summation of influences as experiences. The old world underground they so romanticize; they're not sure if it ever truly existed.1. IOU

"I should have been dead by 30, with the life I was leading. But I still have a career, and at 62, I'm still climbing the ladder, which keeps it exciting, instead of trying to rekindle past glories. I feel like I play with more fire than when I was 25. I'm still reaching, y'know ?"LP1

Basements have long been associated with raw, off-the-cuff rock n roll, the damp and dark spaces serving as the woodshedding venues for countless bands. Yet no basement is more famous, and none yielded music as familiarly weird, wholesomely American, joyously loose, and identifiably humorous as that in the upstate New York house dubbed Big Pink the location where, during the summer and early fall of 1967, Bob Dylan and The Band played a vivid tapestry of covers, originals, and traditionals that signaled the advent of Americana. Once again, the Bard changed the world.
As part of its Bob Dylan catalog restoration series, Mobile Fidelity is thoroughly humbled to have the privilege of mastering the iconic LP from the original master tapes and pressing it on dead-quiet LPs at RTI. The end result is the very finest, most transparent analog edition of The Basement Tapes ever produced and the first-ever analog reissue. Inimitable, the particulars of The Basement Tapes especially, the gather-round-in-a-huddle assembly of the instrumentalists, home-made character, domestic vibe, and low-volume nature of the recordings come to fore here in a manner that takes the listener down the stairs at 2188 Stoll Road and brings the images of Dylan, Rick Danko, Robbie Robertson, and Co. to life.
Fresh off experiencing a motorcycle accident and the wrath of audiences hostile to his embrace of amplified music, Dylan elected to retreat to the comforts of rural and family life. He soon began collaborating with members of the Band in his house, ultimately moving the sessions to Big Pink. Informal, peaceful, relaxed, open-minded: The collaborations blanket country stomps, roots hootenannies, forgotten spirituals, earthy originals, chaotic marches, dreamscapes, dance tunes, folk laments, catch-as-you-can improvisations. On The Basement Tapes, mythical ghosts and dead legends reappear, reveling in the absurdity, comedy, mystery, aura, and alchemy.
In Invisible Republic, his scintillating book about the sessions, cultural critic Greil Marcus states: At a time when the country was tearing itself apart in a war at home over a war abroad, the music was funny and comforting; it was also strange, and somehow incomplete. Out of some odd displacement of art and time, the music seemed both transparent and inexplicable when it was first heard, and it still does. Indeed, The Basement Tapes appear to emanate from an indefinable chasm between modern and ancient, self-evident and mysterious, shapeless and fully formed, abstract and concrete, histories unwritten and chronicled. But every note chimes with freenessa liberating fun, humble simplicity, and bond-creating camaraderie felt in every hoot, holler, laugh, and false start.
The Basement Tapes capacity to remain so gloriously honest and timeless performances that genuinely could've been made today, ten years from now, or back in the 1930's helps account for their emotional resonance and unsurpassed reputation as a snapshot of how unencumbered American music, and art with deep historical roots and connective cultural tissues, is supposed to sound.
Mobile Fidelity's reissue squares away the late-night bleariness, jovial atmosphere, low-ceiling dimensions, and ensemble-based perspective of the sessions, allowing the listener to become Hamlet, the dog who slept nearby Dylan, Robertson, and Co. as it all went down. This is not to be missed.
Given the sonic and artistic merit of this album, we anticipate huge demand.
