Schubert: String Quintet in C D956

When not composing songs, Franz Schubert was most at home with chamber music, not because he was a miniaturist, but because his most profound thoughts were most readily contained by smaller, more concentrated ensembles. His Quintet in C--by far the great work ever written for a string quartet with an extra cello--shows him at his summit with an ethereal second movement that often communicates the sense of spiritual suspended animation that the minimalists strive for but don't often achieve. The Emerson Quartet might seem a bit edgy for this assignment, but instead, the quartet delivers one of the best recordings of its career. Instead of just being swept away by its rapturous lyricism, the quartet probes the emotional depths and meaning of the music's gestures in concentrated, deeply felt performances. The piece is clearly a particular favorite of guest cellist Mstislav Rostropovich (he has recorded it several times before), but like most good chamber players, his presence isn't heard so much as it's felt. Perhaps he is responsible for the particular warmth of this performance. --David Patrick Stearns

Beethoven: String Quartet, Op. 132 (Speakers Corner)

Beethoven's lifelong occupation and pioneering work with the string quartet can be divided up into three creative phases. Beginning with the youthful, fresh Quartets op. 18 which soon became highly popular with the public shortly after their composition, then on to the compact and intensive sounding Quartets op. 59, Beethoven continued to develop his style right up to his late period between 1822 and 1826. The opinions of his contemporaries of his late works range from »extremely moving and haunting« to »Chinese« and show that the rhapsodic style was considered alien and wilful, and the structure of the various movements a cause for bafflement.

In the Quartet in A minor, most attention is focussed on the slow movement, which Beethoven headed with the words "Heiliger Dankgesang" ("Holy song of thanksgiving"). The movement with its hymnal melody is fully in the tradition of a protestant chorale, but this sacred grandeur is twice contrasted with optimistic, dance-like sections, "Neue Kraft fÜhlend" ("feeling new strength").

In the meantime, the world-famous LaSalle Quartet has gone down in history; their superb sound, fine intonation and unerring understanding of the highly sensitive late Beethoven is now brought to life once again on this recording.

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Full Tide (Pure Pleasure)

As an album, Full Tide most closely resembles Shine in its breadth and depth. It's not the shiny production as much as the material itself. Recorded in Ireland and Australia, the album contains some stellar, perhaps career-defining performances of a number of tunes: her readings of Bob Dylan's Lay Down Your Weary Tune and To Make You Feel My Love completely reinvent them. The emotion in her voice is a warm fire for the battered soul to rest in. As moving and convincing as these performances are, they are not the true gems in the body of this album. In fact, her version of Sandy Denny's Full Moon, with a pianist, a bassist, and a string quartet, blows them away. Her voice, full and dark, yearns across time and space for the absent one. It's an elegy to a love, but also to love itself and friendship as well. This is key in that there are a total of four songs here by the late Noel Brazil - Black's longtime collaborator and favorite songwriter - who passed away in 2001.

Bartok: The Six String Quartets (Speakers Corner)

Throughout the ages, the string quartet with its usual forces has always been regarded as the crowning discipline among all forms of composition. Poetically described by Carl Maria von Weber as the »nude of musical art« and by Goethe as a cultured conversation among equals, the genre reflects the creative art of important composers from the Viennese Classicism right up to modern times.

Bartók's six String Quartets, written over the span of roughly 30 years, demonstrate his development as a composer in the purest form. In the Quartets, stated Bartók, I condense to the extreme. In the very first quartet, which is orientated on traditional formal structures, Bartók travels down his own path by lending different weight to the various formal sections, rejecting repeats, and joining the movements together by means of bridging passages.

The second quartet is exemplary for its intentional distance from the Romantic in favour of a composition based on simple folksongs, in which Bartók attempts to grasp the folk sound in his compositional structures, whereby he never quite disregards the tonal rules but certainly begins to free himself from them.

The new richness in the third quartet with regard to counterpoint, melody and harmony as well as tone, is described by the sociologist and composer Theodor W. Adorno - with allusion to the musical creativity of the Hungarian peasants - as a »tent camp of improvisation«, which ventures here and there towards the avant-garde. As a contrast, the fourth quartet is almost relaxed in tone, the form and compositional technique is simple and uncomplicated in expression (Ludwig Finscher). For the first time, Bartók employs his idea of an 'arch' structure in which Hungarian folklore and the classical-romantic chamber-music forms are amalgamated. Like the fourth, the fifth quartet is also written in arch form, but in contrast to the fourth it is more cheerful and transparent. The sixth and final quartet was the last piece that Bartók wrote in Hungary before emigrating to the United States of America. All four movements have a mesto introduction, which induce a melancholy mood and seem to reflect the composer's personal circumstances.

The Juilliard Quartet was the very first American ensemble to record the six quartets in roughly 1950, and they took up the challenge to record the works once again in the middle of the 60s, in order to give each of the unique works a conclusive performance. With firm bowing, and a dry and direct tone, the musicians dissect the substantial power of these works to reflect all the different aspects of the manuscripts.

Borodin - String Quartet No. 2 / Shostakovich - Quartet No. 8 (Speakers Corner) (Awaiting Repress)

Unlike his fellow countryman Tchaikovsky, it wasn't easy for Alexander Borodin to achieve the recognition due to him. As a professor of chemistry, Borodin found very little time for composing, but in spite of this he is considered one of the most important Russian symphonic composers of the 19th century. Borodin also created works for small ensembles; thanks to its beautiful, slow notturno, his String Quartet No. 2 is among the most important compositions in chamber music.

Dmitri Shostakovich has often been honoured as one of the outstanding composers of this century. Shostakovich was devastated by the destruction of Dresden and the composition of the moving String Quartet No. 8 was his means of overcoming his war experiences. The intensity of this piece is augmented by the relaxed climax in the largo which brings his composition to a serene ending.
The international career of the Moscow Philharmonic Quartet began in 1955 when it took on the honourable title "The Borodin Quartet". These 1962 recordings are masterly performances, full of great expressivity. Even the highest demands are met by the warm and full sonority.

    Pulse/Quartet

Nonesuch releases Steve Reich's Pulse / Quartet. Pulse (2015) is performed by the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE)-an artist collective committed to transforming the way music is created and experienced-and Quartet (2013) is played by the Colin Currie Group, an ensemble led by percussionist Colin Currie that specializes in the music of Steve Reich; these are also the ensembles that gave the world premiere performances of the respective works.

Reich says, Pulse, for winds, strings, piano and electric bass, was completed in 2015 and was, in part, a reaction to Quartet, in which I changed keys more frequently than in any previous work. In Pulse I felt the need to stay put harmonically and spin out smoother wind and string melodic lines in canon over a constant pulse in the electric bass and or piano. From time to time this constant pulse is accented differently through changing hand alternation patterns on the piano. All in all, a calmer more contemplative piece.

He continues, Quartet, when mentioned in the context of concert music, is generally assumed to mean string quartet. In my case, the quartet that has played a central role in many of my pieces (besides the string quartet) is that of two pianos and two percussion. It appears like that or in expanded form with more pianos or more percussion in The Desert Music; Sextet; Three Movements; The Four Sections; The Cave; Dance Patterns; Three Tales; You Are (Variations); Variations for Vibes, Pianos and Strings; Daniel Variations; Double Sextet; and Radio Rewrite. In Quartet, there is just this group alone: two vibes and two pianos.

The piece is one of the more complex I have composed. It frequently changes key and often breaks off continuity to pause or take up new material. Though the parts are not unduly difficult, it calls for a high level of ensemble virtuosity. The form is one familiar throughout history: fast, slow, fast, played without pause. The slow movement introduces harmonies not usually found in my music.

Steve Reich has been called our greatest living composer (New York Times) and the most original musical thinker of our time (New Yorker). His path has embraced not only Western Classical music, but the structures, harmonies, and rhythms of non-Western and American vernacular music, particularly jazz. There's just a handful of living composers who can legitimately claim to have altered the direction of musical history and Steve Reich is one of them, states the Guardian. In April 2009 Steve Reich was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Music for his composition Double Sextet. Nonesuch has released twenty-three Steve Reich albums, beginning in 1985 with The Desert Music and including two box sets; his most recent album was Radio Rewrite (2014).

    Bryce Dessner: Aheym

45 RPM Mastered Double Gatefold LP

LP Contains CD of Full Album

Aheym is an astonishing collaboration between National
guitarist Bryce Dessner and journeyman new music string
quartet the Kronos Quartet. Performing four compositions by
Dessner, the Kronos Quartet champion an exciting young
composer, continuing a history of presenting new and
important works and composers that stretches back to their
founding in 1973. Dessner has a history of composition that
predates his membership in the National, and represents a new
generation who are blurring the lines between rock and
    contemporary classical music.

    From the raw emotional
overtones of Aheym to the soaring choral crescendo - courtesy
of the Brooklyn Youth Chorus - of Tour Eiffel, Bryce Dessner's
music for the Kronos Quartet will delight longtime followers of
Kronos' work with Steve Reich, Philip Glass and others, and will
challenge and surprise the National's many fans. At the close of
day, Aheym addresses many of the same aches and dreams as
the music of the National, and it is the breaking down of these
artificial barriers of genre and performance that Bryce Dessner
    has made a life's work.

    First Time On Vinyl

Orange Mountain is pleased to announce for the first time on vinyl Philip Glass's 1998 score to the 1931 film DRACULA starring Bela Lugosi. For his new score, Philip Glass tapped the all-star Kronos Quartet and wrote specifically for them. In the late-1990s Universal Pictures approached composer Philip Glass to compose a new score for one of its classic monster movies. Glass chose to compose a score for Tod Browning's 1931 Dracula because it never had an original score. He composed the work for string quartet to evoke an ancient sound and now almost 20 years later Glass and Kronos continue to perform the music live to film around the world. In the end Glass's music gave the film new life, perhaps adding something that had been missing before there was music: structure and pacing and above all a new sense of mystery and soul.

DRACULA album was originally available on Nonesuch in the late-1990s.

This is the first time DRACULA is available on vinyl.

Philip Glass: Piano Works (Awaiting Repress)

Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson pays tribute to the master of minimal music, Philip Glass. Ólafsson was one of a handful of young pianists selected by Glass to perform all of his Etudes together in London, and the reviews were ecstatic. The Financial Times claimed, "Best of all was Ólafsson in the supersensitive stillness of Etude 5." In addition to the Etudes for solo piano, the album includes reworks of the originals for piano and string quartet. This recording is now available on vinyl.

    Come On Feel the Illinoise

A 22-track anthematic tone poem to the Prairie State, emphatically answering the question, Can a songwriter express the spirit of a state he's never called home? Sufjan weaves various musical styles (jazz, funk, pop) and instrumental textures into a tapestry of persons famous, infamous, and anonymous, and places iconic, obscure, and ghostly. Myths, memories, and incidental anecdotes are swept up with symphonic flourishes. Implementing 25 instruments, played mostly by Sufjan himself, a two-handed horn section, string quartet and small choir, Illinois conjures up images of Danny Elfman conducting a Gilbert and Sullivan company, a minimalist ensemble, and the Marion Catholic Marching Band on a windswept prairie football field.

    Rumspringa

Though technically residing in Nashville, TN, rising singer/songwriter Daniel James aka Canon Blue has spent the majority of the past three years touring the world with Efterklang while simultaneously writing and recording Rumspringa in their Copenhagen studio. He then headed to Iceland to record orchestral arrangements with renowned string quartet Amiina. The result is a breathtakingly gorgeous mix of orchestral pop and neoclassical minimalism that blends the soulful intimacy of Jeff Buckley and the playful whimsy of Sufjan Stevens with the stately meditation of Steve Reich and Philip Glass.

    Midnight Machines

    Pressed On Clear Vinyl

Electro-pop artist Lights have unveiled Midnight Machines, an album comprised of six acoustic songs from her third studio album Little Machines (September 2014), plus two brand new songs.

"Midnight Machines is more than just an acoustic record, it's a complete reinvention of some of the songs from Little Machines," said Lights. I worked with a string section and my band to create this ultra vibey, late night version.

Midnight Machines is Lights' third acoustic album, a tradition that started when she reinterpreted her first studio release, and it has carried through on every album. This time, Lights worked with a string quartet on completely new and full arrangements that breathe completely different life into their electro-rock counterparts.

    Dust And Disquiet

Caspian present Dust & Disquiet, the band's first full length since 2012. The band returned to Q Division Studios in Somerville, Massachusetts again with producer Matt Bayless (Mastodon, Minus The Bear, Isis) where they recorded the highly acclaimed Waking Season ("the Best Post-Rock Album of Year," said SPIN Magazine in 2012). The result showcases a maturation of the quiet/loud dynamic that Caspian has been exploring since their debut EP, You Are the Conductor. The new album reflects the many moods of post-rock from the album opener with horns and a string quartet ("Separation No. 2"), riffs on the wilder, steel-eyed side of country ("Rioseco"), all the while staying true to its epic brand of build-and-release rock ("Arcs of Command," "Dust & Disquiet").

    MC III

Mikal Cronin returns with MCIII. Marked by the lush
arrangements, stunning melodies, and deeply personal lyrical work for which
Cronin is now known, the album is also a deliberate attempt to simply "go
    big."

As he did on his self-titled 2011 debut and 2013's MCII, Cronin arranged and
played nearly all of the record himself, including the tzouras, a traditional
Greek string instrument he heard and subsequently bought while on tour in
Athens. There's French horn, saxophone, and trumpet. There are
mood-altering crescendos and heartbreaking turns-of-phrase, guitars both
gorgeous and pugnacious. No longer satisfied with the sound of "just one
string player," Cronin arranged parts for a full string quartet instead.
"It's a continuation of what I've been trying to do up until now, but I'm
finding a better way to do it," he says. "I'm finding a more successful way of
working those unexpected elements and textures and instruments into a rock
record, of exploring that wormhole and mushing everything together
harmoniously. I like riding the line between the two," he adds. "I like finding
new ways to bring different musical worlds together.

Imaginary Cities is the recording premiere of saxophonist Chris Potter s new Underground Orchestra. At the core of this larger ensemble is the personnel of his long-established Underground quartet with Adam Rogers, Craig Taborn and Nate Smith now joined by two bassists, a string quartet, and Potter s old comrade from Dave Holland Quintet days, vibes and marimba man Steve Nelson. The title composition is a suite, panoramic in its reach, with movements subtitled Compassion , Dualities , Disintegration and Rebuilding . The scope of the work, and its contrasting moods and thematic development, inspire some of Potter s finest playing. His saxes fly high above his idealized cityscapes or launch into dialogues or group improvising with its gifted inhabitants. Four further pieces Lament , Firefly , Sky and Shadow Self extend the feeling of the suite, successfully combining both tightly written material and very open areas involving all members of the orchestra. References are multi-idiomatic and multicultural, and Potter, who counts Charlie Parker with Strings amongst his formative enthusiasms, had Arabic and Indian string sections in mind, as well as contemporary composition, when shaping this material. Imaginary Cities was recorded in December 2013 in New York s Avatar Studio and produced by Manfred Eicher. Release of the album is followed by US performances with the Underground Orchestra in New York and San Francisco.

    Planetarium

Planetarium is a concept album that occasionally gives way to ambient interludes and majestic brass chorales, buttressed by a percussive drive that keeps the momentum skyward. In spite of all the experimentation in sound and style, Sufjan's vocals provide a clear and coherent center of gravity. The album includes some of his most diverse vocal performances to date (from soft hush to guttural scream), and whether he's singing through effects pedals, vocoders, auto-tune or not, his voice delivers an ambitious flight map through the cosmos. Planetarium is an album co-composed by four musicians: Bryce Dessner, James McAlister, Nico Muhly, and Sufjan Stevens.

Flanked by a string quartet and a consort of seven trombones, this unique collaborative ensemble has assembled an expansive song cycle that explores the Sun, the Moon, the planets and other celestial bodies of our solar system (and beyond) through soundscape, song, science and myth. The result of this creative alliance is a musical and aesthetic journey as far-reaching as its subject: from lush piano ballads to prog-rock political anthems, curious electronic back-beats to classical cadenzas, the vast musical styles seek to explore the diversity and mystery of our cosmos. The subject of the album is not just the wilderness of outer space, but the interior space of human consciousness and how it engages.
