Beethoven: String Quartet, Op. 132 (Speakers Corner)

Beethoven's lifelong occupation and pioneering work with the string quartet can be divided up into three creative phases. Beginning with the youthful, fresh Quartets op. 18 which soon became highly popular with the public shortly after their composition, then on to the compact and intensive sounding Quartets op. 59, Beethoven continued to develop his style right up to his late period between 1822 and 1826. The opinions of his contemporaries of his late works range from »extremely moving and haunting« to »Chinese« and show that the rhapsodic style was considered alien and wilful, and the structure of the various movements a cause for bafflement.

In the Quartet in A minor, most attention is focussed on the slow movement, which Beethoven headed with the words "Heiliger Dankgesang" ("Holy song of thanksgiving"). The movement with its hymnal melody is fully in the tradition of a protestant chorale, but this sacred grandeur is twice contrasted with optimistic, dance-like sections, "Neue Kraft fÜhlend" ("feeling new strength").

In the meantime, the world-famous LaSalle Quartet has gone down in history; their superb sound, fine intonation and unerring understanding of the highly sensitive late Beethoven is now brought to life once again on this recording.

Recording: December 1975 at Beethoven-Saal, Hannover (Germany), by Klaus Scheibe

    Production: Rainer Brock

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Chet Baker With Strings

Chet Baker was one of the representatives of the West Coast Cool Jazz movement whose life and music appeals to the imagination of the people the most.

His heroin addiction is well documented, his exploits and misadventures are wrapped in legendary anecdotes.
But his life story never managed to overshadow his unmistakable talent.

Chet Baker has one of the most recognizable sounds of all the jazz musicians in the cannon; his trumpet playing is intimate, simple and delicate, with a hint of melancholy that tears at the heartstrings.

Chet Baker With Strings was recorded during three sessions in 1953 with Zoot Sims & Jack Montrose on tenor sax, Russ Freeman on piano, Shelly Manne on drums and Clifford 'Bud' Shank on alto sax.

The players are lifted up into the air like a leaf on the breeze by Montrose's delicate string arrangements, while the Baker and Sims interplay on songs like 'Loved Walked In' are amongst the best recorded in jazz history.

This fully instrumental album is a classic, and now available on vinyl for the first time since its original release in 1953!

Bartok: The Six String Quartets (Speakers Corner)

Throughout the ages, the string quartet with its usual forces has always been regarded as the crowning discipline among all forms of composition. Poetically described by Carl Maria von Weber as the »nude of musical art« and by Goethe as a cultured conversation among equals, the genre reflects the creative art of important composers from the Viennese Classicism right up to modern times.

Bartók's six String Quartets, written over the span of roughly 30 years, demonstrate his development as a composer in the purest form. In the Quartets, stated Bartók, I condense to the extreme. In the very first quartet, which is orientated on traditional formal structures, Bartók travels down his own path by lending different weight to the various formal sections, rejecting repeats, and joining the movements together by means of bridging passages.

The second quartet is exemplary for its intentional distance from the Romantic in favour of a composition based on simple folksongs, in which Bartók attempts to grasp the folk sound in his compositional structures, whereby he never quite disregards the tonal rules but certainly begins to free himself from them.

The new richness in the third quartet with regard to counterpoint, melody and harmony as well as tone, is described by the sociologist and composer Theodor W. Adorno - with allusion to the musical creativity of the Hungarian peasants - as a »tent camp of improvisation«, which ventures here and there towards the avant-garde. As a contrast, the fourth quartet is almost relaxed in tone, the form and compositional technique is simple and uncomplicated in expression (Ludwig Finscher). For the first time, Bartók employs his idea of an 'arch' structure in which Hungarian folklore and the classical-romantic chamber-music forms are amalgamated. Like the fourth, the fifth quartet is also written in arch form, but in contrast to the fourth it is more cheerful and transparent. The sixth and final quartet was the last piece that Bartók wrote in Hungary before emigrating to the United States of America. All four movements have a mesto introduction, which induce a melancholy mood and seem to reflect the composer's personal circumstances.

The Juilliard Quartet was the very first American ensemble to record the six quartets in roughly 1950, and they took up the challenge to record the works once again in the middle of the 60s, in order to give each of the unique works a conclusive performance. With firm bowing, and a dry and direct tone, the musicians dissect the substantial power of these works to reflect all the different aspects of the manuscripts.

    Gypsum Strings

Their second release springs from 1960's West coast legends like The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Bros., The Charlatans, and Moby Grape, adding elements of X, Neu, The Feelies, Mercury Rev, and Fairport Convention. Cutting through the dense arrangements are powerhouse harmonies. Rachel Cox emerges as the Blue Ridge amalgam of Sandy Denny and Linda Ronstadt while Pat Sullivan's gravelly baritone anchors it all in Johnny Cash and John Doe territory. The sextet's trademark killer songwriting chops are in evidence as Gypsum Strings boasts some beautiful ballads that temper the heaviness of other tracks. Look for them on tour in the spring.

John Lee Hooker, Albert King, Johnny "Guitar" Watson And More On 180 Gram Vinyl Pressed At R.T.I.

Selected from the crown jewels of the rich King-Federal-DeLuxe discography, King Strings features rocking, socking guitar instrumentals from the Cincinnati-based family of labels cut between 1949 and 1962, programmed for power! Fashioned as a vintage King LP from the era and containing a killer line-up of the biggest talents the stable of labels offered, this is the historic various artists collection that should have been issued circa 1962. King was central to the underlying creative flow in R&B during the era, and the recordings here show the depth of style and synergy that the label routinely captured on vinyl. From the proto-funk groove of Hooker's "Stomp Boogie" (under the pseudonym Texas Slim) to two cuts of Baker magic captured in Paris over a decade later, and including key cuts from Freddy King, Albert King, Johnny "Guitar" Watson and many others in between, you'll individually hear a variety of instruments, tones and techniques, but together the clear, common artistry of the players' sovereign ability, sequenced like a long, climactic solo-this is the sound of some of the most heralded talent of the guitar generation! This Time With Strings

Raymond Scott, who was both musician and inventor, musically reinvented eleven of his compositions for full orchestra and strings on
his 1957 album THIS TIME WITH STRINGS.

Many of these tunes were originally recorded by Scott's novelty jazz
six-man Quintette in the late 1930s; others date from the 1940s and
'50s. All get a spectacular makeover under the baton of the legendary
maestro. Contains some of his most famous works, including Quintette favorites "Powerhouse," "The Toy Trumpet," and "Twilight in
Turkey," retooled for expanded setting. Also some older things for
dance band, material written for Broadway and the screen, all given
Hi-Fidelity dressing and a certain vividness in string treatment. Now
available on 12" vinyl replicating the original LP sleeve.

    She Has No Strings Apollo

With each member of the band living on a different continent it took more than just a phone call to instigate a rehearsal. In February of 2002 (their 10th anniversary as a musical group), The Dirty Three reunited in Melbourne, Australia to demo some ideas they had been working on individually. They wound up with 20 songs, picked their favorites of the batch, and hit the road for two months to tour the new material. Along the way they met Fabrice Laureau, who among other things recorded part of the hit soundtrack to the film Amelie. He offered to record the band at a studio outside Paris, and thus was born She Has No Strings Apollo, the Dirty Three's sixth proper studio album.

Originally released in 2003, She Has No Strings Apollo is marked by the band's signature sounds crashing together with remarkable power, fury, and beauty. Subtle touches of piano and the addition of bass guitar (a first for the band) work beautifully behind the shimmering melodies created by Warren Ellis' soaring violin, Mick Turner's ethereal guitar, and Jim White's tidal drumming. The Dirty Three makes that rare brand of music that is raw and pure and expressive and untainted by artifice.

    Incredible String Band

If any musical combo ever meshed perfectly with the times it was the Incredible String Band. And here's the proof: their 1966 debut, The Incredible String Band on deep-grooved, 180-gram vinyl. The wildly eclectic Scottish folk outfit -with the airy vocals and
fretboard prowess of Robin Williamson and Mike Heron as its two constants -began life resurrecting wondrous and ancient Celtic ballads, then was transformed by the perfumed winds of 1967's psychedelic revolution to add sitar, oud, gimbri and all manner of exotic axes to its arsenal. The result is a gently mesmerizing psychedelia and anti-folk stance-consummate counterpoint to current psych heroes like Mogwai and Beachwood Sparks that makes perfectly clear why the Incredible String Band remains just that: Incredible!

    The Incredible String Band

The Incredible String Band is the debut album by the Folk band of the same name, released in 1966. It is the only one of the band's albums to feature the original trio line-up with Clive Palmer as well as Robin Williamson and Mike Heron.

They recorded the album at the Sound Techniques studio in Chelsea, London in one afternoon in May 1966, with Joe Boyd as producer. Boyd insisted on focusing on the group's own self-written material, rather than the traditional songs and tunes which they had also been performing, and with each performer singing his own material.

The album showcased the trio's abilities on a variety of instruments, although the instrumentation is relatively orthodox compared to the band's later work. All three members played guitar and sang, with Palmer also playing banjo and kazoo and Williamson playing mandolin, banjo, tin whistle and fiddle/violin.

180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Cut from the Original Analogue EMI Master Tapes at Abbey Road Studios!

This famous LP was recorded at the Kingsway Hall, London on May 10-11, 1962,
except for the Tallis Fantasia which was recorded in the sonorous acoustic of the medieval Temple Church in the City of London a week later. The latter venue was suggested by the American composer and conductor Bernard Herrmann, a friend and admirer of Barbirolli since Sir Johns years in New York.

    From Herrmann's website:
Herrmann insisted that it must be done in a stone building not a studio. So Herrmann suggested the Temple Church. The recording session was started at midnight to avoid traffic noise. According to Ursula Vaughan Williams (the composers widow): Coats and bags and thermos flasks were piled round the effigies of Crusader Knights. Bernard was there, listening to the balance, listening to the music, and the resulting record is by far the best ever made of the work.

Produced by the legendary Victor Olof and engineered by Harold Davidson and Neville Boyling (Tallis).

The album features the original album artwork and is pressed on 180g vinyl to audiophile standards.

    6 & 12 String Guitar

The release of this truly iconic album virtually launched Leo Kottke out beyond the St. Paul-Minneapolis confines where he had been ensconced as a local phenom. By jumping on board John Fahey's burgeoning Takoma label, Kottke's guitar wizardry (especially finger-picking a 12-string, usually reserved as rhythm accompaniment) gave other guitarists far and wide, second thoughts. Throw in some sassy slide work on both 6 & 12 String Guitar and you'll know why this particular record is commonly referred to as an Intro to Guitar 101. With twelve original compositions plus a few by J.S. Bach, Kottke's blues, folk, country and classical channelings dictate both his playful and reflective approach on each. Highlights include blazing picking techniques on Busted Bicycle and Vaseline Machine Gun with some muscular bottleneck slide work on The Sailor's Grave On The Prairie.

Schubert: String Quintet in C D956

When not composing songs, Franz Schubert was most at home with chamber music, not because he was a miniaturist, but because his most profound thoughts were most readily contained by smaller, more concentrated ensembles. His Quintet in C--by far the great work ever written for a string quartet with an extra cello--shows him at his summit with an ethereal second movement that often communicates the sense of spiritual suspended animation that the minimalists strive for but don't often achieve. The Emerson Quartet might seem a bit edgy for this assignment, but instead, the quartet delivers one of the best recordings of its career. Instead of just being swept away by its rapturous lyricism, the quartet probes the emotional depths and meaning of the music's gestures in concentrated, deeply felt performances. The piece is clearly a particular favorite of guest cellist Mstislav Rostropovich (he has recorded it several times before), but like most good chamber players, his presence isn't heard so much as it's felt. Perhaps he is responsible for the particular warmth of this performance. --David Patrick Stearns

Detroit Twelve String Blues & Rags

Todd Albright is a Country Blues, finger-style 12-string guitar player and singer living in Detroit, Michigan. An evening's sonic evocations of pre-WWII Blues covers an extensive selection of material recorded in the 1920's and 30's. Playing the 12 string guitar, Todd brings to life an era composed of Blind Lemon Jefferson, Sylvester Weaver, Blind Willie McTell and Leadbelly, among others. Todd's history playing the Blues reaches over 25 years, though he does not remember a time that a guitar wasn't in his hands.

He first heard the Country Blues at the age of twelve, thanks to a gifted John Lee Hooker record from his sister. The experience was a profound one-the Blues felt right, and he immediately became a self-taught student of the genre aiming solely to interpret the sounds of the masters. Todd has performed across the U.S, both as a solo musician and alongside his former country blues string band, The Staving Chain. Throughout the years, Todd has enjoyed sharing the stage with notable musicians and friends such as Dakota Dave Hull, Roy Book Binder, Charlie Parr, and Paul Geremia.

Dvorak: String Quintet In G Major (Speakers Corner)

A perusal of string quintets throughout history leaves one with the impression that their creators wish to bestow a powerful impact upon the small group of musicians. And it is no different with Dvoák's Quintet in G major: a double bass, instead of the usual second cello, paints with broad strokes in the lengthy score whose first movement almost takes on symphonic dimensions.

Here, the insistent, broad theme is presented in snappy cascades of sound. The cantilena, supported by a scurrying second subject, is followed by a frenzied Scherzo, which is steeped in Czech folk music under Dvoák's distinctive style. The third movement (Poco andante) is highly meditative and is constructed with layers of one and the same basic motif, which soon is intensified with pulsating quavers and finally evolves in rising melodic elements.

The Finale is filled with fresh melodies and spiced with subtle motivic development, which is pleasant on the ear in all its complexity. It is not surprising, therefore, that Dvoák won an important prize for his Quintet.

Borodin - String Quartet No. 2 / Shostakovich - Quartet No. 8 (Speakers Corner)

Unlike his fellow countryman Tchaikovsky, it wasn't easy for Alexander Borodin to achieve the recognition due to him. As a professor of chemistry, Borodin found very little time for composing, but in spite of this he is considered one of the most important Russian symphonic composers of the 19th century. Borodin also created works for small ensembles; thanks to its beautiful, slow notturno, his String Quartet No. 2 is among the most important compositions in chamber music.

Dmitri Shostakovich has often been honoured as one of the outstanding composers of this century. Shostakovich was devastated by the destruction of Dresden and the composition of the moving String Quartet No. 8 was his means of overcoming his war experiences. The intensity of this piece is augmented by the relaxed climax in the largo which brings his composition to a serene ending.
The international career of the Moscow Philharmonic Quartet began in 1955 when it took on the honourable title "The Borodin Quartet". These 1962 recordings are masterly performances, full of great expressivity. Even the highest demands are met by the warm and full sonority.

Blind Willie McTell (May 5, 1898 - August 19, 1959) was a Piedmont blues and ragtime singer and guitarist. He played with a fluid, syncopated fingerstyle guitar technique, common among many exponents of Piedmont blues. Unlike his contemporaries, he came to use twelve-string guitars exclusively. McTell was also an adept slide guitarist, unusual among ragtime bluesmen. His vocal style, a smooth and often laid-back tenor, differed greatly from many of the harsher voices of Delta bluesmen such as Charley Patton.

McTell's influence extended over a wide variety of artists, including the Allman Brothers Band, who covered his Statesboro Blues, and Bob Dylan, who paid tribute to him in his 1983 song Blind Willie McTell, the refrain of which is And I know no one can sing the blues like Blind Willie McTell. Other artists influenced by McTell include Taj Mahal, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Ralph McTell, Chris Smither and the White Stripes.

    Maps For Sleep

Formed in the Fall of 1991 by Brandon Capps (guitar/vocals), Kimber Lanning (drums) and Tim Patterson (bass), Half String created a lush, guitar-driven brand of noise pop. Their sound was an antidote to the desert jangle bar band scene that dominated Tempe, AZ at the time. While the group shared an aesthetic with much of the British shoegaze scene, and occasionally recalled the spirit of early 4AD and Factory Records, they certainly carved out a beautiful noise all their own. During their austere six-year lifespan, Half String inspired an underground music scene in their hometown, and gained a small but loyal following from beyond the desert.

Half Strings first demo was hand delivered to Independent Project Records Bruce Licher during the summer of 1992. Impressed, Licher released the 3-songs as the Eclipse 7 single on his revered post-punk fine art imprint. Matt Kruse joined on second guitar in 1993, adding another layer of texture and intricate melody to the bands broadening sound. This was evident on Oval, Half Strings second single, and the subsequent Tripped Up Breathing EP, both released by IPR in 1994. Patterson left the band that Winter, and was replaced by Dave Rogers, a multi-instrumentalist who added backing vocals.

In 1995, Germanys Pop Goes On! and IPR co-released Eclipse*Oval*Hue as a CD mini-album collecting together the first two singles along with three unreleased tracks. Later that same year, the group recorded their debut album, A Fascination With Heights. Issued by IPR in 1996, this would be Half Strings last release before the band parted amicably the following Summer and the fifth addition to Captured Tracks' recently launched Shoegaze Archives series.
