    The Monitor

The Monitor was recorded this past August (2009) by producer and engineer Kevin McMahon at his studio Marcata Recording in New Paltz, NY. The usual suspects from the world of Titus Andronicus were all in attendance, as well as members of Ponytail, Wye Oak, Vivian Girls, and the Hold Steady. McMahon also mixed the album, and it was mastered by Greg Calbi whom the band chose because he is the only person alive who can claim involvement in both The Chemistry of Common Life by Fucked Up and Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell by Meat Loaf!

AmpsandSound Products Are Handmade In Small Batches and Go Through Extensive Quality Control

The Seneca is AmpsandSound's nod to studio monitors. Inspired by the flat response and dynamic range of the best studio monitors from TAD and JBL, the Seneca is a 2way horn loaded monitor. They've combined a massive 15" woofer for effortless bass and 2" beryllium compression driver provides for lighting fast transient, wide bandwidth and ultra-low distortion.

The Seneca like the Hudson is a partial horn-loaded loudspeaker system configured as an ultra-wide bandwidth 2way. The foundation of the Seneca is a direct radiating 15" woofer for low frequencies, providing usable bass into the 35hz range and crossing to the Mid-Horn @ 500hz. The Seneca mates a modern high-efficiency compression driver to Elliptical traxtrix horn. The reduction of a crossover point and driver increases coherence without sacrificing high frequency information. The concept of the Seneca is to have big horns, state of the art crossovers and drivers into the smallest form factor possible; and yielding bass response, efficiency, dynamic capabilities, low distortion, and scale of much larger designs in a much smaller enclosure.

The Seneca had long been utilized by ampsandsound's founder in his personal system due to its more relaxed presentation. The core design was revisited with the development of the Hudson. Now paired with our newest crossover design and utilizing one of the most a calmed mid ranges, the Senenca was transformed into a loudspeaker capable of life like realism. Gone was the reference to a good sounding speaker, but now music was described as hearing the artist just feet away from you; as if you were at the counsel in the studio and they were playing to just you.

Its compact size makes it capable of being installed into even small most rooms, minimizes room interactions. Front ported and horn loaded reduces back wall interaction. The Seneca offers dynamic range, life like scale, tonal accuracy will appeal to audiophiles who desire all of the positive attributes of horn-loaded designs but without the issues of size and room interaction that are inherent to many designs.

The Seneca features a state of the art hand-wired crossover network, which utilizes high-order filters, and minimal driver lover lap, through use of large air-core inductors for low signal loss. If the heart of the Seneca is its horns and midrange, the crossover represents its cerebral cortex. The Seneca is art though design, providing detail rich rendering without coloration. Its crossover minimizes frequency overlap, and achieves phase coherence and perfect time alignment. Its crossover is hand-made and built to the same rigorous standards as our amplifiers and loudspeakers, utilizing Hyper-litz inductors and low Q capacitors. Each crossover weighs more than 15 pounds and is unlike anything you've seen or heard in horn-loaded loudspeakers.

The Seneca's bass section utilizes a 15 woofer in a direct-radiating configuration that is front-ported to minimize interaction with front walls. Through the use of FFT analysis, ampsandsound has carefully built an inert cabinet that features strategic bracing and dampening. As a result, the Hudson is capable of high output with minimal excursion, and greatly reduced levels of distortion over conventional designs.

The heart of the Seneca is its large CNC-cut midrange horn, which utilizes a hybrid tractrix flare, providing controlled horizontal dispersion and limiting vertical dispersion to reduce room interactions. The midrange horn is mated to a 2 large-format midrange compression driver with beryllium diaphragm. No need for a tweeter with a midrange capable of extending past 20khz and providing a rule flat midrange. The combination of a large, precision-made wood horn with a large throat and large midrange compression driver has resulted in a midrange that is tonally accurate, yet rich with detail. The midrange is smooth, fast-sounding, and easy to listen to for hours.

I've been shocked at how much the studio cube has been inspirational as a monitoring device. [...] I monitor at lower levels and more relaxing levels than I ever have before..
    - Paul Pilot, Producer

Our StudioCube is the ideal partner for the personal monitoring: it enables a nuanced, transparent and fatigueless listening in the studio and on stage. At the same time this compact headphone amplifier fascinates the most demanding musicians and master sound engineers with its outstanding sound qualities.

Being a musician or a sound nerd, it's your natural ambition to always deliver optimum results on stage and in the studio. For a pro-level headphone amplifier this ambition poses a special challenge. Our StudioCube copes with any task brilliantly and is your true and flexible companion in every situation. An all-out professional whose uncompromisingly truthful sound you can always depend on.

    Essential jack-of-all-trades

The StudioCube distinguishes itself by high-class technology and practical features. Its first-grade components, coupled with balanced input stages, give it outstanding sound qualities and a punchy, clean bass reproduction. Like all our devices the StudioCube, too, is a role model for exceptional transparency and extremely low noise.

Its excellent transient behaviour ensures that studio musicians can work at a lower listening volume level. This does not only protect their hearing and allow a longer concentration phase. That way crosstalk from the headphone into the nearby microphones is audibly reduced as well. All people involved can rejoice over a more inspiring, more musical result.

    Practical features

Apart from its excellent sound properties the StudioCube offers a number of practical features: it consorts well with virtually every headphone. The front panel has a practical input level indicator and a conveniently located toggle switch to assign a mono signal to both the left and right output channel simultaneously. The Loop output can be used to feed several devices through a daisy chain. Thanks to its special design bracket it mounts very conveniently on a microphone stand or under the table.

    ½ Gold & ½ Brown Colored Vinyl

Saxon's ninth studio album, Destiny was originally released on
20th June 1988 and was produced by Stephan Galfas at Hook
And Manor studio in Berkshire, England. It is the only album to
feature the rhythm section of Nigel Duram (drums) and Paul
Johnson (bass) alongside long serving members Biff Byford
(vocals), Graham Oliver (guitar) and Paul Quinn (guitar). Being a
fan of Christopher Cross' song writing, Biff came up with the idea of
covering his track "Ride Like The Wind" as the albums lead single,
after giving it a "Wheels Of Steel" style makeover. This version
includes a 12" mix of "I Can't Wait Anymore" plus live B-Sides and
    some alternative monitor mixes.

    The Nat King Cole Story

Analogue Productions' Blue Note and Nat King Cole Reissues WIN A Positive Feedback 2010 Brutus Award!
...if you haven't picked up every one of the Blue Note and Nat King Cole reissues from Chad Kassem and company at Acoustic Sounds, you're really missing out! - David W. Robinson, Positive Feedback, Issue 52

The results on this five 45rpm 180g LP set are simply astonishing, particularly if you've heard the originals. The transparency, dynamics and three-dimensionality create the intense sensation of being in the studio with the musicians and especially with Cole who appears as a visceral, floating apparition between the speakers. The size and three-dimensionality of the vocal image produces the sensation of the listener being a 'fly on the microphone mike stand' listening to Cole perform, surrounded by musicians. The arrangements and performances are faithful to the originals but the sound of course is far superior. The feeling is of sitting in on history by being there, not merely eavesdropping after the fact. Music = 10/11; Sound = 11/11 - Michael Fremer, Musicangle

...mastered from the original three-track work tapes is a sonic spectacular that outdoes the original by a wide margin - as does its packaging. The SACD includes three-channel and two-channel mixes. A major reissue. Stereophile Records To Die For - Michael Fremer, Stereophile, February 2010

One of Nat King Cole's crowning achievements and a fittingly lavish celebration of a cultural and musical icon, The Nat King Cole Story offers a glorious overview of the career of one of the greatest and most beloved performers in popular music history. 38 tracks, many re-recorded in stereo for this anthology, offer a selection spanning his popular career.

His beginnings leading the popular jazz-oriented Nat King Cole Trio are represented with selections including Route 66 and I Love You (For Sentimental Reasons). Hits including Nature Boy, Mona Lisa, Unforgettable, Orange Colored Sky, Night Lights and Looking Back are here to represent his unparalleled string of memorable hits as a popular vocalist. Calypso Blues and Ay Cosita Linda help illustrate the range his projects could cover. More contemporary to this anthology, selections including Wild Is Love are augmented here with two huge hits as a special bonus, Ramblin' Rose and Those Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer to further expand the scope.

A talent and voice for all times with a body of work that could and did help define their eras, Nat King Cole's career offers some of the finest, most enduring and treasured recordings ever made. Nat King Cole could never be fully served by any one set. But this wonderful cornucopia stands as a fantastic celebration for the enthusiast and a good starting point for someone just beginning to explore The Nat King Cole Story.

Using the original first generation 2-track and 3-track session tapes from Capitol's vaults and all-analogue systems including custom headstacks, 3-track preview heads, console and monitoring chain installed at AcousTech specially for these releases, mastering engineers Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman realize the stunning beauty of these recordings in this 45-RPM 180-gram five album set.

Originally presented as a deluxe box set of 3 LPs in a canvas-bound embossed box with essays and pictures included in a album-sized booklet, The Nat King Cole Story was a prestigious release Capitol took obvious pride in. Complete with 5 LPs, canvas-bound embossed box and booklet with essays and pictures, Analogue Productions proudly recreates the experience for a new generation to cherish with this deluxe release. This truly is a no-expenses-spared project, resulting in the ultimate version of this title and a historic reissue.

There are 38 songs in this collection. Of those, three are the same recordings included on other Analogue Productions Nat King Cole reissues. Stardust (track 28) is the same version included on Love Is The Thing. St. Louis Blues (track 30) is the same version included on the album of that title. And Paradise (track 33) is the same version included on The Very Thought Of You. Three more songs - Sweet Lorraine, It's Only A Paper Moon and (Get Your Kicks On) Route 66 - are songs that appear on After Midnight, however these versions are stereo re-recordings of the original arrangements from the 1940s.

The Beatles' Original Mono Studio Albums Remastered At Abbey Road Directly From The Analogue Masters For Vinyl Release By Sean Magee and Steve Berkowitz

Lacquers Cut Using Neumann VMS-80 Lathe

Manufactured For The World At Optimal Media In Germany, The Beatles' Albums Are Presented In Their Original Glory, Both Sonically And In Their Packaging.

The Beatles in mono: This is how most listeners first heard the group in the 1960s, when mono was the predominant audio format. Up until 1968, each Beatles album was given a unique mono and stereo mix, but the group always regarded the mono as primary. MONO MASTERS is released in mono on three 180-gram vinyl LPs with faithfully replicated artwork, newly mastered from the analogue master tapes.

In an audiophile-minded undertaking, The Beatles' acclaimed mono albums have been newly mastered for vinyl from quarter-inch master tapes at Abbey Road Studios by GRAMMY®-winning engineer Sean Magee and GRAMMY®-winning mastering supervisor Steve Berkowitz. While THE BEATLES IN MONO CD boxed set released in 2009 was created from digital remasters, for this new vinyl project, Magee and Berkowitz cut the records without using any digital technology. Instead, they employed the same procedures used in the 1960s, guided by the original albums and by detailed transfer notes made by the original cutting engineers.

Working in the same room at Abbey Road where most of The Beatles' albums were initially cut, the pair first dedicated weeks to concentrated listening, fastidiously comparing the master tapes with first pressings of the mono records made in the 1960s. Using a rigorously tested Studer A80 machine to play back the precious tapes, the new vinyl was cut on a 1980s-era VMS80 lathe.

Via Michael Fremer (Analog Planet) on the mastering process:

The EQ applied was based upon the original cutting engineers' notes as well as careful listening to original first lacquer, first mother, first stamper EMI pressings (-1, 1, G matrix). The cartridge used was Ortofon's 2M Black.

It's important to remember that the tapes have aged-some as much as fifty years-and the monitoring, playback and mastering equipment have changed as well, even though the work was done in the very same room in which the originals were mastered. Solid state has replaced tubes in the cutting chain.

Lacquers were cut using Abbey Road Studios' Neumann VMS-80 lathe, equipped with a Neumann SX-74 cutter head. The originals were cut on a Scully lathe, perhaps with a Westrex cutter head.

The Beatles' Original Mono Studio Album Remastered At Abbey Road Directly From The Analogue Masters For Vinyl Release By Sean Magee and Steve Berkowitz

The Beatles' nine U.K. albums, the American-compiled Magical Mystery Tour, and the Mono Masters collection of non-album tracks will be released in mono on 180-gram vinyl LPs with faithfully replicated artwork. Newly mastered from the analogue master tapes, each album will be available both individually and within a lavish, limited 14-LP boxed edition, The Beatles In Mono, which also includes a 108-page hardbound book.

Max Out Balanced Headphones (And Single-Ended Too)

Even More Format Choice! MQA Authenticated

    Hi-Res Streaming Like Never Before

Listen Better. Listen Longer. Up To 10-Hour Battery Life

    Power your headphones. Big style.

With maximum output power (32R) around 10 times that of iPhone 6 (285mW vs. 27mW), the nano iDSD Black Label can drive most headphones on the market.

From In-Ear-Monitors to mid-size headphones, the nano iDSD BL is able to drive them with ease.

    Uber convenient

It's small, lightweight and battery powered. You can take the nano iDSD Black Label everywhere you go and it won't drain your phone's battery.Just switch on the BL first and then plug in your device. The Lithium Polymer battery gives the nano iDSD Black Label up to 10 hours of non-stop musical enjoyment. It also has a special USB male 'A' connector for a direct connection. Use a USB-to-Lightning (Apple) or OTG connector (Android). Or if at home, just use the enclosed USB3.0 cable to connect to a PC. Stream Apple Music/Google Play/Spotify/Tidal/Youtube content from your phone to a whole other level of quality. Add kick-a** sound to your gaming by connecting your console or computer.

    Master Quality Authenticated

iFi always strives to bring you choice. We've added yet another file format to our portfolio in the form of MQA in the new BL. Take TIDAL or your MQA file to a whole new level.MQA is an audio technology developed by Bob Stuart. This technology makes hi-res audio streaming a reality and delivers studio master quality audio to your headphones.

For mobile DACs with both portability and power considerations, MQA Rendering is the ideal solution as the workload is shared between the host (computer) and the client (DAC). In this case, for a DAC such as the nano iDSD BL, less CPU processing and lower electrical power are needed. This approach for the iFi portable range remains a full end-to-end MQA solution and the listener still enjoys the full benefits of MQA without compromise.

    High-Res Audio Certified

The nano iDSD Black Label is one of the best native highest-resolution DACs you can find, supporting PCM up to 32/384 kHz and DSD up to 256 times the sample rate of a CD, even on Mac OSX* and mobile phones*. It is also certified 'High-Res Audio' according to the stringent criteria set down by JEITA and JAS (Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association and Japan Audio Society). Don't accept low-resolution music!(*firmware upgrade needs to be applied to enable DSD256 on all devices)

    Perfect your listening pleasure

The nano iDSD Black Label lets you choose between the 'Listen' (Minimum Phase Bezier Filter) and 'Measure' (Linear Phase Transient Aligned Filter) options. It's the only portable DAC to give you so much control.

    Compatible. Like no other.

The new headphone amplifier delivers more than double the power of the original nano iDSD into 16 Ohm and over four times the power into high-impedance headphones. Meanwhile, the built-in IEMatch circuit ensures that even extremely sensitive headphones and IEMs are 'hiss free' throughout the volume range. The nano iDSD Black Label also includes the S-Balanced wiring system for the headphone outputs, giving the full benefit of balanced outputs when used with headphones and IEMs (fitted with balanced wiring) with low-noise and lower distortion. Even single-ended headphones benefit, as S-Balanced cuts crosstalk in half (without the need to re-wire headphones to benefit).

And as always, we use the ultimate components

As is the AMR/iFi DNA, we love to audition and vet new parts as they come onto the market and where possible, use the ultimate components. Whereas some shun internals pictures, we always strive to show 'what's under the hood' as customers like to make informed purchasing decisions based upon sonics and outright 'sound for the pound'.The nano iDSD Black Label, while very affordable, is packed to the rafters with boutique components. Here are just a few:

    • Thin Film Resistors for audio section lower noise & distortion than standard metal film or carbon film types.
    • Tantalum Polymer Capacitors for Power Supplies.
    • TDK C0G capacitors for the analogue filter.
    • Panasonic ECPU Film Capacitor for critical DAC reference voltage.
    • Analogue volume control potentiometer for best sound quality.
    • Dual-Mono Headphone amplifier with 3.5mm TRRS balanced wiring all the way to the amplifier, despite the amplifier being single-ended this delivers all the benefits of balanced wiring.
    • Built-in iEMatch using MELF resistors for transparent matching of very sensitive headphones and/or IEMs.

The parts, the circuitry, the implementation is something else and makes the nano iDSD Black Label a worthy successor to the original nano iDSD. It just goes up against the best out there and kicks butt.

The nano iDSD one of the few portable, truly audiophile DACamps out there and the fact that it is priced appealing to the real-world means many are going to enjoy their music a whole lot more without being excluded by the price.

So, get your toes a tapping to the file format of your choice and get jammin with the new BL.
