    Night

Without apology, Holly Cole is a self-declared night owl, perfectly at home in the time between dusk and dawn, a dear friend of the wee small hours. It's a fact that now finds firm and poetic expression in the title and content of her eagerly awaited new album - Night. As usual when it comes to the iconic Canadian songstress, it's an album that features a stylistically diverse and emotionally stirring collection of songs. It stands as a love letter to the night and its magic powers, a celebration of the hours where daylight's chatter has disappeared and turned into peaceful moments of creative possibility, providing a chance to see the world with different eyes and to listen with different ears. An invitation to intimacy.

    Backlash

Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears has reclaimed their original moniker and announced their fourth full-length album Backlash.

Backlash sees the return to their celebrated take on classic soul and punked-up R&B, though the album is their most stylistically adventurous work so far. Recorded in the band s hometown of Austin, TX, the 10-track album expands their sound by bringing gritty guitar tones and Stax-styled horn sections to intricate, danceable arrangements inspired by the likes of Nile Rodgers. I wanted to go for more of a soul/blues/rock-and-roll sound compared to the last one-the kind of stuff I was doing back in the day, but with the songwriting a little more evolved, notes eponymous frontman Lewis.

The album also confronts the ugly reality of dealing with the backlash from the things you ve done in the past, delivering a host of songs rooted in regret but steeped in a defiant spirit. Bombastic but nuanced, Backlash ultimately unfolds as an album both joyfully chaotic and intensely cathartic.

    Both Sides of the Gun

With the release of his seventh studio album, Both Sides of the Gun, Ben Harper offers his signature mix of rock, soul and folk music, while also venturing into new territory. I was hoping I could come back to the root of my earlier records, the sparseness and intimacy, he says, and also branch out further in a produced sound than ever before. From the blazing Curtis Mayfield/Stevie Wonder-style funk of Black Rain to the gentle sway of Morning Yearning to the full-on power ballad Waiting for You, the eighteen songs on Both Sides Of The Gun reveal a master stylist at the peak of his game. Available on Vinyl For The First Time

A lovely, understated exercise in minimalism, Deep Dead Blue documents a set of otherwise unaccompanied guitar/vocal duets between Bill Frisell and Elvis Costello, recorded live at the Meltdown Festival in London's Queen Elizabeth Hall on June 25, 1995.

Frisell co-wrote the title track, one of the five songs bearing a Costello credit; the others are underexposed items from Costello's mid- to late-'80s catalog, plus selections by Charles Mingus (Weird Nightmare) and Lerner & Loewe (Gigi).

Costello is once again the refined, mature vocal stylist of Painted From Memory, but Frisell expertly controls the dynamics of each piece, often stripping his part down to single-note lines, which lends surprising emotional impact when he allows full chords to wash over Costello's voice.

    Unforgettable

Emerging as a great pop vocal stylist in 1954, Nat King Cole enjoyed a string of hit singles and albums thereon, but Unforgettable is perhaps the singer at his early peak. With romance as the watchword, Cole slides through some of his most familiar ballads, include the title selection, Portrait of Jennie, Mona Lisa, and I Love You (For Sentimental Reasons). There are quite a few lesser known, but attractive songs, plus a small handful of standards (What'll I Do? is a keeper) that round out this interesting collection. The very artistic, near surreal three-dimensional white, charcoal black, and royal blue-hued front cover may be the best part of this reissue, as it reflects a time period defined by its simplicity and yet its increasingly technological, superimposed modernity.

    This Time

The five-time Grammy Award winner summarized 35 years of mastery on the debut Nozzle release Live From Across the Pond (2006), an electrifying two-CD concert set drawn from a series of shows (opening for Eric Clapton) at Londons Royal Albert Hall. When the time came to follow up that widely praised collection with a studio recording, Cray viewed it as an opportunity to move his sound in other directions.

He found exactly what he was looking for by turning to one of his oldest friends and colleagues: bassist Richard Cousins, whose tenure with the Robert Cray Band began with its barnstorming regional origins in Eugene, Oregon, in 1974 and extended through 1991, encompassing such early high-water marks as Strong Persuader (1986) and Dont Be Afraid of the Dark (1988), both winners of the best contemporary blues performance Grammy.

As ever with Robert Crays undefinable sound, the music on This Time remains stubbornly beyond category. He has been internationally admired as a stylist whose innovations have brought new life to the blues, and such punchy outings as Chicken in the Kitchen and Thats What Keeps Me Rockin should satisfy the most demanding blues fans. But the new albums barrier-busting material, whether its the soulful Love 2009 or the profound balladry of This Time and Forever Goodbye demonstrate once again that attempting to slot Cray in a single genre is an exercise in futility.

Stan Getz / Cal Tjader Sextet

This Newly Reissued Vinyl Addition Is A 'Must Have' Title For For Both Getz And Tjader Fans.

In the vein of many a smooth West Coast jazz outing, this 1958 disc finds original cool stylist Getz paired with vibraphonist Cal Tjader on a very enjoyable
selection of jazz standards and Tjader originals. The lineup includes pianist Vince Guaraldi, guitarist Eddie Duran, bassist Scott La Faro, and drummer
Billy Higgins (this was one of the earliest record dates for either La Faro or Higgins, both of whom were playing with Getz at San Francisco's Black Hawk
in between recording sessions). Guaraldi's spry Ginza Samba kicks thing off with nimble and imaginative statements by all the soloists. Tjader's
swinging originals Crow's Nest and Big Bear provide prime solo vehicles as well, while his lovely waltz number Liz-Anne adds some nice contrast to
the set, eliciting one of Getz's best solos in the process. The group rounds things out with fine ballad readings of I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face
    and For All We Know.

Stan Getz: one of the all-time great tenor saxophonists

Cal Tjader: The legendary percussionist who is often linked to the development of Latin rock and acid jazz. Although fusing jazz with Latin music is often
categorized as Latin jazz (or, earlier, Afro-Cuban jazz), Tjader's output swung freely between both styles.

    Ben Webster Meets Oscar Peterson

1959's Ben Webster Meets Oscar Peterson brings together two of the greatest stylists in American musical history. Here, in a program of timeless songs, pianist Oscar Peterson proves to be the perfect foil, his effortless swing an excellent set-up for the unhurried scoops, slurs and bent notes of tenor saxophone balladeer Ben Webster. Supporting musicians include Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums. On par with Webster's classic Soulville.

For Drawing Down the Moon, we focused on revisiting the very first Azure Ray record. That approach facilitated Orenda (Fink) and I bringing our sound together stylistically and emotionally after working so many years apart, explains vocalist Maria Taylor. For As Above So Below, we wanted it to be more like Azure Ray in an alternate universe. Sonically As Above is a sparser, more minimal and more electronic experience than past albums.

Ronald Bronstein describes his extraordinary film as a brown tomato lobbed with spazmo aim at the spotless surface of the silver screen. Frownland has garnered passionate raves and scathing denunciation. Screenings have ended in screaming matches. None of Frownland's reputation does justice to its savage dark humor, emotional heft and stylistic audacity. Frownland is a character study of Keith, a neurotic, manipulative, unlovable New Yorker. Keith lurches his way through an uncaring city, attempting to aid a suicidal friend, evict his roommate, and attain some self-respect.

'Ternion', from the Latin for a group of three, sees We Have Band make a stylistic leap on from their debut 'WHB', which despite its critical acclaim the band were keen not to repeat. The result is a very different record, an intensely personal album that manages to be both uplifting and melancholic. Gone are the nonsense lyrics replaced by frank and honest accounts of their relationships, struggles to make sense of the world around them and the effect, both physical and emotional, of a life on the road.

Recorded in NYC, and featuring Coleman Hawkins (tenor), Thad Jones (trumpet), George Duvivier (bass), Eddie Costa (piano and vibes), and Osie Johnson (drums), this brilliant LP is proof that in 1960 Hawkins was in prime form, and still making significant contributions to the genre 35 years after making his first record! Not only was Hawkins (born in 1904) a pioneer of the tenor saxophone, transforming the instrument from an obscure novelty instrument into one of the primary instruments of jazz, he also accompanied and propelled the saxophone throughout its many stylistic changes, as jazz itself developed and changed in the ensuing decades.

    Octavarium (Awaiting Repress)

Octavarium is the eighth studio album by American progressive metal band Dream Theater. Released on June 7, 2005, it was the band's final release with Atlantic Records. Recorded between September 2004 and February 2005, the album holds the distinction of being the last album ever recorded at The Hit Factory in New York City.

With Octavarium, the band decided to create a classic Dream Theater album, drawing upon their various stylistic influences while trying to make the music less complex. It was the first Dream Theater album to feature an orchestra. The album's structure was based around the concept of the musical octave. It consists mainly of lessons regarding various Catholic feasts.

Catch 22: Keasbey Nights (Awaiting Repress)

Keasby Nights is the first full length album by Catch 22. The record is powered by a three piece horn section who can lay down smooth harmonies over a rhythm section that can turn stylistic directions on a dime. Shifting from hard hitting punk complete with machine gun fills and driving rhythms, to the up-beat sounds of early jump-style swing and ragtime influenced dance music. This unique blend of sounds and influence brings to the band's music the edginess of punk combined with the catchy vocal melodies and danceable rhythms of swing and ska.
