    Superfuzz Bigmuff EP

Rock & roll got a badly needed revitalizing overhaul with Seattle's grunge explosion of the late 1980's, and Mudhoney was there to make sure it got done right. Although nearly eclipsed by the success of such bands as Nirvana and Pearl Jam, Mudhoney was arguably the most important grunge band of all. Their Touch Me I'm Sick defined a generation of disenchanted middle-class malcontents bored stiff by the predictable mire that rock & roll had become.

Superfuzz Bigmuff compiles the band's rare early singles in one convenient package. Twelve essential tracks here, and they all rock mightily. If you're old enough you'll want to say that you were there, if you know what you're talking about, folks might believe you. Do yourself a favor and familiarize yourself with the rock & roll revival that was Mudhoney.

    Action And Indications

Seaweed formed out of the fertile northwest punk scene of the mid-to-late '80s in Tacoma and Olympia Washington. Singer Aaron Stauffer, fresh off a stint in the little-known Spook & the Zombies, founded the band with best friend Clint Werner, who assumed guitar duties. After the recruitment of guitarist Wade Neal, bassist John Atkins, and drummer Bob Bulgrien, Seaweed began playing clubs throughout the Pacific Northwest. From 1989 to 1999, Seaweed recorded five punk-pop LPs and played over a thousand shows. According to All Music Guide, "they played D.I.Y. with the Sub Pop label for their first three records, went ambitiously astray by signing with Hollywood Records, then did the cool right thing by returning to indie Merge." This August, Merge Records offers the vinyl reissue of 1999's Actions and Indications, remastered and pressed to high quality vinyl, with three unreleased bonus tracks (digital only) added. Originally recorded at Tacoma's Uptone Electric studio in the summer of 1998, Actions and Indications is a tour de force of power chord dynamism.

Blood Guts & Pussy is a 1990 album by the Dwarves. It was their first album for Sub Pop, and the album's sleeve was the subject of controversy, receiving protests from feminists.[1] Dwarves frontman Blag The Ripper asserts that the Blood Guts & Pussy classic Drug Store is one of his favourite songs to play live, and that it is frequently requested during live sets.[2] Drug Store was played acoustically by the Dwarves in the United Kingdom in 2005.

Washed Out is the operational alias for Atlanta, GAs Ernest Greene, and their first full-length, Within and Without will be released via Sub Pop Records. Greene recorded Within and Without with Ben Allen, who, among a great many other things, co-produced Animal Collectives Merriweather Post Pavillion, Gnarls Barkleys St. Elsewhere and Deerhunters Halcyon Digest.

In 2009, Washed Out released two critically-acclaimed EPs; Life of Leisure (Mexican Summer) and High Times (Mirror Universe Tapes). Most recently, the Washed Out song Feel It All Around, from Life of Leisure, was chosen as the theme song for the new and very funny IFC series Portlandia, which features Saturday Night Live cast member Fred Armisen and Sleater-Kinney/Sub Pop alum and current Wild Flag member Carrie Brownstein.

    Commune

There is no direct association between mysterious Swedish
psychedelicists GOAT and Argentinian master of magical realism, Jorge
Luis Borges. Yet their mission appears to be the same. Borges generated
his ideas from historical curiosities across the globe-knife duels on the
South American plains, Middle Eastern heresiarchs, Chinese pirates-and
twisted them into fictions that blurred the lines between footnotes and
outright fantasy. GOAT's sound is the sonic embodiment of this principle,
working heavy psych-rock, Nigerian afrobeat, German krautrock, Anatolian
funk, and a host of other micro-niches into a hallucinatory celebration
    of rock's diverse manifestations.

Despite the success of GOAT's critically-acclaimed 2012 debut, World
Music, the individual identities involved remain shrouded in mystery:
GOAT performs in masks, and spokespersons maintain that the group
is simply an ongoing multi-generational collective of musicians from the
isolated, Swedish locality of Korpilombolo, a junction of native Sami
people, Scandinavian settlers, and the rare wayfaring outsiders. Beyond
that, GOAT divulges very little. It's as if GOAT are taking cues from Borges'
short story "Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius," wherein a clandestine enclave
of intellectuals attempt to create a new reality by inserting articles on a
fictitious, puzzling state into modern encyclopedias. Borges' secret
society wanted their heretical ideologies to infiltrate common thought
through an invented past; GOAT wants to revitalize the communal
experience of rock music by creating an alternate origin story.

Ultimately, it is GOAT's music that speaks the most about them, and
on Commune GOAT deliver a heavy dose of acidic grooves, hypnotic
incantations, and serpentine guitar lines, building on the much-lauded
sound of World Music to explore new territories. Starting with the layered
percussive groove, Eastern guitar flourishes, and convoking vocals of
"Talk To God," Commune re-establishes the trance-inducing rhythms
and exotic blaze of guitar that characterized World Music. From there,
the album launches into darker and more propulsive territories,
occasionally emerging for breaths of transcendental '60s psych-pop and
    driving proto-metal fuzz.

"GOAT is mainly a symbol of sacrifice. To sacrifice the individual for
the collective good. To become one with the rest of humanity and
universe," said an unnamed GOAT conspirator in a rare correspondence.
With that philosophy, GOAT is propagating their crossbred music and
mysticism by sharing Commune with the world. And, while we'll never
see GOAT's faces on the cover of a glossy magazine, their intoxicating
conjurations are poised to infiltrate our collective psyche with the
subversive magical allure of a Borgesian fable.

    Screaming Life/Fopp

From the depths of the Sub Pop archives comes a reissue of
Soundgarden's thunderous opening salvo, Screaming Life, plus bonus
tracks from the Fopp EP and Sub Pop 200 compilation. This reissue
marks the first time these tracks will be available digitally, and their first
appearance on vinyl since the original, late-80s pressings (notwithstanding
a long-gone, late-'90s repress of Screaming Life). All tracks have been
remastered by Seattle studio wizard and producer of the original Screaming
Life and Sub Pop 200 sessions, Jack Endino, who had this to say about
    it:

"Ah, Screaming Life, Soundgarden's debut, and one of the first real
records I made for anyone outside my own band. I already knew
Soundgarden pretty well, since they and Skin Yard had shared the stage
many times in Seattle's tiny club scene circa 1985-1986. Soon after
opening Reciprocal Recording in July 1986, there I was with Soundgarden,
trying to make the most of our eight tracks. Somehow, we found room
for all of Matt Cameron's 'bonus tubs,' Hiro's primordial Fender bass,
and a whopping four tracks to share between Kim Thayil's mad guitar
psychedelia and Chris Cornell's still-expanding voice. 'Nothing To Say'
was the song that made us all look at each other and go, 'uh, holy crap,
    how did we do this?'

Stuff started happening. A&M came calling. SST agreed to put out
their next record. But Soundgarden was not finished with Sub Pop. They
contributed 'Sub Pop Rock City,' about Seattle's then-rising 'grunge'
scene, to the Sub Pop 200 comp; and they threw everyone a curveball
with Steve Fisk-produced Ohio Players and Green River covers on the
    Fopp EP.

The glorious vistas of a major label future awaited them. To quote Kim
from an old interview, 'It was karma, it was dogma, it was dog breath.'"

    Animal Joy

Sub Pop is proud to present Shearwater's Animal Joy, our first album by the band and their eighth overall. Led by Jonathan Meiburg, and featuring drummer Thor Harris, and bassist Kimberly Burke, Shearwater has been a favorite at Sub Pop HQ for years. On Animal Joy, Meiburg ditches the expansive approach of his recent records - particularly the epic trilogy of Palo Santo, Rook and The Golden Archipelago - to create a record that seems shockingly direct, immediate and intensely personal. He's no stranger to lush, crafted recordings, but this one sounds like no prior Shearwater incarnation.

    Tied To A Star

J Mascis' Tied to a Star is the follow up to his acclaimed Sub Pop debut
Several Shades of Why. The album, led by the songs "Every Morning"
and "Wide Awake," was recorded and produced by Mascis and mixed
by John Agnello at Bisquiteen in Amherst, MA.

It makes perfect sense that I was asked to write a bio for J Mascis.
Let's face it, he and I have a long history. It all started the first time I
saw him live. It was in New York City. I don't remember when or where,
but I think he was walking around. I was probably walking around, too.
The second time was also in New York, at a Mexican restaurant in the
East Village (the one that takes credit cards now, but didn't used to).
Years later I actually met him at the SXSW festival though a friend who
works at Sub Pop. I guess that meeting went well, because when that
friend from Sub Pop got married, she sat me at the same table as J.
Sounds unbelievable? I suggest you look at the picture below. Now keep
staring at that picture until... J's new acoustic
album Tied to a Star comes out on Sub Pop Records. It features
appearances by Ken Maiuri (Young@Heart Chorus), Pall Jenkins (Black
Heart Procession), Mark Mulcahy (Miracle Legion) and Chan Marshall
(Cat Power). Had I been in the area, I'm sure I would've been asked to
    play on it, too.

While these songs feature new elements (looped vocals, drum machines, etc.), and are thoroughly, radiantly contemporary, they remain undeniably Low's. More Parts Per Million

The Thermals celebrate their 10-year anniversary by reissuing their three Sub Pop albums on vinyl. More Parts Per Million is the band's debut album, originally released by Sub Pop on March 4th, 2003. The Thermals were created in 2002 by singer Hutch Harris in his Portland-area kitchen. By that summer, they was a rock band in the flesh, with Kathy Foster on bass, Jordan Hudson on Drums and Kind of Like Spitting's Ben Barnett on the guitar. The Thermals play with a joyous frenzy not unlike the idiosyncratic guitar driven indie-punk of the Wedding Present, with lyrics spewed forth from the same oblique etherland as Guided By Voices. More Parts Per Million has sold over 12,000 copies, and the vinyl has been out of print for years. Chris Walla of Death Cab For Cutie mixed the album at The Hall of Justice studio in Seattle, WA.

This is the Bay Area band's third album and first for Sub Pop; it's also their most varied and richly textured. Rehearsals For Departure

    8-Way Santa (Deluxe Edition)

TAD was a mighty force in the late-'80s/early-'90s Seattle scene. Their heavy, churning rock/metal/punk buzz was a crucial part of Sub Pop's early years, and, along with peers like Mudhoney, Nirvana, and Soundgarden, they defined the sound that reinvigorated the rock world in the early '90s. TAD was led by the physically imposing yet incredibly sweet singer/guitarist TAD Doyle, with bassist Kurt Danielson (ex-Bundle of Hiss), drummer Steve Wied, and guitarist Gary Thorstensen. With an image that sometimes cast the band as deranged lumberjacks, and influence from Head of David and Killdozer, TAD put a uniquely rain-and-fog-coated Northwest spin on '80s underground rock. The band released two albums and a few EPs on Sub Pop between 1988 and 1991, all of which are now lovingly remastered by the band's friend and engineer Jack Endino (Soundgarden, Nirvana, Mudhoney, Screaming Trees) and repackaged with expansive liner notes.

In 1991, after tens of thousands of miles on the road in support of God's Balls, and a run of powerful EPs/singles, TAD released their second full-length album, 8-Way Santa. Recorded at Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin with Butch Vig, whose work with Killdozer the band admired, 8-Way Santa finds TAD pushing their sound in new directions. Not a band to rest on its laurels, TAD began to add melodic touches to their sound, as evidenced by the lead single, "Jinx." Many touring dates and shows followed the record, and a pair of copyright-infringement brouhahas occurred over the original album cover - which was quickly pulled from stores when the couple portrayed in the cover photo objected - and the corporate-beverage-offending art for a 1990 EP. 8-Way Santa was the last record with the original TAD lineup, and their last album for Sub Pop before jumping to a major label

After their 1989 debut album, God's Balls, TAD continued to write and record, releasing a string of singles and the Salt Lick EP between 1989 and 1990. Salt Lick features the single "Wood Goblins," the video for which MTV banned because it was, to the delicate eyes of MTV programmers, "too ugly." The sounds of Salt Lick are, indeed, wonderfully ugly, thanks in part to the involvement of noise-rock technician Steve Albini (Big Black, Shellac, Nirvana, The Jesus Lizard), who recorded the EP. The band continued to release singles and gain momentum in the press. As TAD himself puts it: "Lyrically we had a lot of subject matter that was meant to be tongue in cheek from the beginning but had been presented by Sub Pop and ourselves as true-to-life. As a result, the press had taken it all seriously and began to feed on and ravenously devour the mythology that we had created."
