    Come On Feel the Illinoise

A 22-track anthematic tone poem to the Prairie State, emphatically answering the question, Can a songwriter express the spirit of a state he's never called home? Sufjan weaves various musical styles (jazz, funk, pop) and instrumental textures into a tapestry of persons famous, infamous, and anonymous, and places iconic, obscure, and ghostly. Myths, memories, and incidental anecdotes are swept up with symphonic flourishes. Implementing 25 instruments, played mostly by Sufjan himself, a two-handed horn section, string quartet and small choir, Illinois conjures up images of Danny Elfman conducting a Gilbert and Sullivan company, a minimalist ensemble, and the Marion Catholic Marching Band on a windswept prairie football field.

Actor is the highly anticipated new album by St. Vincent (Annie Clark), and the follow-up to her first album Marry Me, one of the most acclaimed debuts of 2007. Actor was co-produced by Clark and John Congleton (Modest Mouse, Polyphonic Spree etc.) and features eleven new songs, all written and arranged by Clark. The new album takes the ambitious compositional and sonic underpinnings of Clark's debut as a starting point and never looks back. The arrangements are more masterful, the songwriting grander, the performances ever more confident and inspired. Clark sings and plays guitar, bass and keys on Actor, with woodwind contributions from Hideaki Aomori (Sufjan Stevens) and Alex Sopp (Bjork, Phillip Glass), and additional rhythm section work by McKenzie Smith and Paul Alexander of Midlake. Other musicians on the album include Mike Atkinson (French horn, score consultant), Daniel Hart (violin, sarongi), William Flynn (bass) and percussionists Jeff Ryan, Matthias Bossi and Aynsley Powell. Before recording as St. Vincent, Annie Clark was a member of The Polyphonic Spree and Sufjan Stevens' touring band, and performed with Glenn Branca's guitar orchestra.

    Carrie & Lowell (Awaiting Repress)

Carrie & Lowell sounds like memory: it spans decades yet does not trade on pastiche or nostalgia. Stevens's gauzy double-tracked vocals wash across the dashboard of long-finned, drop-top Americana, yet as we race towards the coast we are reminded that sunshine leads to shadow, for this is a landscape of terminal roads, unsteady bridges, traumatic video stores, and unhappy beds that provide the scenery for tales of jackknifed cars, funerals, and forgiveness for the dead. Each track in this collection of eleven songs begins with a fragile melody that gathers steam until it becomes nothing less than a modern hymn. Sufjan recounts the indignities of our world, of technological distraction and sad sex, of an age without neither myths nor miracle-and this time around, his voice carries the burden of wisdom. Carrie & Lowell accomplishes the rare thing that any art should achieve, particularly in these noisy and fragmented days: By seeking to understand, Sufjan makes us feel less alone.

    Enjoy Your Rabbit

"This may just be Sufjan Stevens' Magnus Opus.
Forget Michigan, Seven Swans, Illinois . . . Enjoy Your
Rabbit is a masterclass in doing everything that logic
tells music not to do." - Sputnik Music

"Sufjan Stevens proves himself adept of both long and
short forms; downtempo and high BPM; glitches,
scratches and ambient drones; blips, bleeps and
    bloops." - Pitchfork

"The underlying guiding principle is wide-eyed
exploration that fills nearly every track with a sense of
    playfulness." - All Music

Originally released in 2001 before Michigan and Illinois,
Sufjan Steven's Enjoy Your Rabbit foretells his 2010
electronic Age of Adz. Though overlooked by many,
there are fans who regard Enjoy Your Rabbit as
    Sufjan's greatest work.

Departing from the singer-songwriter format of his
debut Asthmatic Kitty Records album, A Sun Came,
Rabbit is a collection of fourteen colorful instrumental
compositions combining Sufjan's noted gift for melody
with electronic sounds to create an unusually playful
and human- not to mention humane- electronic
experience. Great for dancing, driving, writing, cooking,
painting, running, walking, and of course, eating
Chinese food, Rabbit features nearly eighty minutes of
music that will truly soothe the savage breast, whatever
    that means.

    Welcome To The Welcome Wagon

This debut unveils a ramshackle sing-along enterprise of a Presbyterian pastor and his wife who wrestle out the influences of folk music, religion, pop culture, and church tradition in a collection of soulful and good-humored songs. It consolidates sacred song traditions (old Testament psalms, 17th century Presbyterian psalters), iconoclastic '60s pop innovators (The Velvet Underground), '70s charismatic Catholics (Lenny Smith), and '80s melancholy lovelorn pop (The Smiths). Recorded, produced, and arranged by Sufjan Stevens.

    All Delighted People

The EP, All Delighted People, is built around two different versions of Sufjan Stevens' long-form epic ballad All Delighted People, a dramatic homage to the Apocalypse, existential ennui, and Paul Simons Sounds of Silence. The song was originally workshopped on Sufjans previous tour in the fall of 2009. Other songs on the EP include the 17-minute guitar jam-for-single-mothers Djohariah, and the gothic piano ballad The Owl and the Tanager, a live-show mainstay.

    The Age Of The Adz

The Age of Adz (pronounced Odds) is Sufjan Stevens' first full-length collection of original songs since 2005's conceptual pop opus Illinois. This new album is probably his most unusual, first, for its lack of conceptual underpinnings, and second, for its extensive use of electronics. The album almost entirely eschews the songwriter's former tools of the trade: namely, acoustic instruments that accompany an expansive narrative scope.

While the sounds on this record are distinctly artificial (drums machines and analog synths reign supreme), the proclamations of the songs are unabashedly visceral, sung loudly, with a backdrop of insistent orchestration. The result is an album that is perhaps more vibrant, primary and explicit than anything Sufjan has done before, incorporating themes that are neither historical nor civic, but rather personal and primal.

This collection serves as a companion piece to the Carrie &
Lowell Live album released earlier this year (and as an
expansion to the original album). In the same way the live
show featured re-interpretations of the songs from Carrie &
Lowell, the mixtape unveils new remixes by several
longstanding collaborators including Roberto C. Lange (aka
Helado Negro), Thomas Bartlett (aka Doveman), and James
McAlister (aka 900X). The album also features Sufjan's own
remix of "Drawn to the Blood."

The mixtape includes a few alternate and/or demo versions of
songs from the original album. The digital release also
contains an iPhone demo of the song "Carrie & Lowell."
Greatest Gift features four previously unreleased new songs,
"official" outtakes from Carrie & Lowell (they were recorded at
the same time as the album). These include "Wallowa Lake
Monster," "The Hidden River of My Life," "City of Roses," and
"The Greatest Gift." This new material, in its investigation of
love, life, death, God, and the beautiful state of Oregon,
serves as a contemplative companion to the original album.

    Bon Iver

Bon Iver is Justin Vernon returning to former haunts with a new spirit. The reprises are there, solitude, quietude, hope and desperation compressed, but always a rhythm arises, a pulse vivified by gratitude and grace notes. The winter, the legend, has faded to just that, and this is the new momentary present.

Bon Iver is often equated with just me, says Vernon, but you are who surrounds you, and for Bon Iver I wanted to invite those voices as musical catalysts. Thus on the track Beth/Rest and throughout the album, we hear the pedal steel of Greg Leisz (Lucinda Williams, Bill Frisell), the uniquely layered low end of Colin Stetsons (Tom Waits, Arcade Fire) saxophones, the riffing of Mike Lewis (Happy Apple, Andrew Bird) altos and tenors, and the lush horns of C.J. Camerieri (Rufus Wainwright, Sufjan Stevens). Bon Iver regulars Sean Carey, Mike Noyce and Matt McCaughan contributed vocals, drums and production, Rob Moose (Antony and the Johnsons, The National) helped with arranging and added strings, and fellow members of Volcano Choir, Jim Schoenecker and Tom Wincek provided processing.

Bon Iver was recorded and mixed over the course of three years at April Base Studios, a remodeled veterinarians clinic located in rural Fall Creek, Wisconsin.

Planetarium is a concept album that occasionally gives way to ambient interludes and majestic brass chorales, buttressed by a percussive drive that keeps the momentum skyward. In spite of all the experimentation in sound and style, Sufjan's vocals provide a clear and coherent center of gravity. The album includes some of his most diverse vocal performances to date (from soft hush to guttural scream), and whether he's singing through effects pedals, vocoders, auto-tune or not, his voice delivers an ambitious flight map through the cosmos. Planetarium is an album co-composed by four musicians: Bryce Dessner, James McAlister, Nico Muhly, and Sufjan Stevens.

Flanked by a string quartet and a consort of seven trombones, this unique collaborative ensemble has assembled an expansive song cycle that explores the Sun, the Moon, the planets and other celestial bodies of our solar system (and beyond) through soundscape, song, science and myth. The result of this creative alliance is a musical and aesthetic journey as far-reaching as its subject: from lush piano ballads to prog-rock political anthems, curious electronic back-beats to classical cadenzas, the vast musical styles seek to explore the diversity and mystery of our cosmos. The subject of the album is not just the wilderness of outer space, but the interior space of human consciousness and how it engages.

Using intimate live performances with fellow songwriters Sufjan Stevens and Denison Witmer as a pathway, All the Way from Michigan Not Mars is a meditative exploration of Rosie Thomas' work as it connects to her as a human being. Described as a call to action, a document of personal and collective uprising, 'Bones' is Son Lux's fourth album since producer-composer Ryan Lott started working under the name in 2007. Having recently evolved into a three-piece with guitarist-composer Rafiq Bhatia and drummer Ian Chang, 'Bones' comes after what you might typically describe as a whirlwind couple of years that have seen Lott work with Lorde, Boots, Sufjan Stevens, Nico Muhly, Busdriver and more.

    Gatefold LP With Poster

Good Advice is the fizzing, phosphorescing new pop LP by songwriter Basia Bulat. Captured and produced by My Morning Jacket leader Jim James in Louisville, KY, it follows on 2013's Polaris- and Juno-nominated Tall Tall Shadow and two years of tour-dates alongside acts like Sufjan Stevens, Daniel Lanois and Destroyer. These are 10 songs of desire and redemption, lit up with a bottle-rocket of liberated, faintly psychedelic sound.

Though technically residing in Nashville, TN, rising singer/songwriter Daniel James aka Canon Blue has spent the majority of the past three years touring the world with Efterklang while simultaneously writing and recording Rumspringa in their Copenhagen studio. He then headed to Iceland to record orchestral arrangements with renowned string quartet Amiina. The result is a breathtakingly gorgeous mix of orchestral pop and neoclassical minimalism that blends the soulful intimacy of Jeff Buckley and the playful whimsy of Sufjan Stevens with the stately meditation of Steve Reich and Philip Glass.
