Grammy-Winning Folk-Roots Masterwork: Newly Remastered and Available for the First Time Ever on Vinyl

No Contemporary Band Better Merged Pop Hooks With Bluegrass Craft: Flatts & Scruggs Rubbing Shoulders With the Beatles

2003 Grammy Award Winner for Best Contemporary Folk Album Presents Chris Thile, Sara Watkins, and Co. in Supreme Fidelity

Produced by Alison Krauss: You-Are-There Acoustic Imaging, Organic Warmth, Extraordinary Textures

Also Available on Remastered 2LP Sets: Nickel Creek and Why Should The Fire Die?

An inimitable merger of pop hooks, bluegrass craft, virtuosic musicianship, and unbeatable acoustic sounds, 2002's This Side is the Grammy-winning sophomore record from the bluegrass/progressive folk trio Nickel Creek. Produced by mentor Alison Krauss, as was the group's 1999 breakthrough predecessor Nickel Creek, This Side finds permanent members Chris Thile (mandolin), Sara Watkins (fiddle) and Sean Watkins (guitar) expanding their sound and becoming the most original and inventive bluegrass band of modern times in the process.

The Absolute Sound's Neil Gader captured the group's appeal, stating: The charm of this Southern Cal-based band stems from its fresh challenge to our preconceptions of homespun musical genres like folk and bluegrassNickel Creek simultaneously honors old-world traditions while respinning them with contemporary country-pop hooks and hill-country accents. Here, the echoes of bluegrass legends Flatt & Scruggs and The Dillards rub shoulders with those of the Beatles and Eagles. With Sara Watkins on violin and Sean Watkins on guitar (both sing lead as well), Nickel Creek offers crisp ensemble playing, but its Chris Thiles mandolin virtuosity and quirky singing that puts the caffeine in the coffee and keeps it percolating. Highlights include a cover of Pavement's Spit on a Stranger and originals Speak and Beauty and the Mess.

The production values are exceptionally high, reflecting the intense musicality of producer and iconic newgrass artist Alison Krauss. The instrumental envelope, acoustic properties, rich body, and vocal presence on this pressing need to be experienced by every fan of acoustic music, Americana, and folk. These newly remastered Nickel Creek LP pressings blow the great-sounding SACD counterparts away. In addition, the gatefold packing looks incredible.

    V

Sugar Hill Records is proud to announce the release of V, the long-awaited solo debut from Nashvilles not-so secret weapon: Kenny Vaughan. Since first arriving in Music City in the late 80s from his home state of Colorado, Vaughan quickly set himself apart as a different breed of guitar-slinger, technically assured and, more importantly, armed with a deeply felt reverence for a wide range of musical traditions encompassing vintage country, classic pop, hard bop, and beyond. The ten tracks that comprise V dip their toes in all of these waters.

    Swimmin' Pools, Movie Stars

American music treasure Dwight Yoakam's special collaboration with leading bluegrass label Sugar Hill Records, Swimmin' Pools, Movie Stars is set for release this fall. For the making of this album, Yoakam assembled a band of bluegrass luminaries to reinterpret favorites from his catalogue of gems. The 11-track album features Yoakam compositions from his extensive catalog.

This project was produced by nine-time Grammy winner Gary Paczosa (Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton), Jon Randall (songwriter of Whiskey Lullaby") and Yoakam, recorded at both Southern Ground Studio (TN) and the legendary Capitol Records Studio B in Los Angeles and mixed by Chris Lord Alge. For the recording, the production team gathered together a world-class band of bluegrass's current greats including Grammy winner and nine-time international Bluegrass Music Association Guitar Player of the Year Bryan Sutton on guitar, Grammy winner Stuart Duncan on fiddle and banjo, 14-time Grammy winner Barry Bales on bass, Adam Steffey on mandolin (Alison Krauss), and Scott Vestal on banjo (Sam Bush). Feast Of The Hunters' Moon

Sugar Hill Records is proud to announce the upcoming release of Feast of the Hunters' Moon, the debut album from Portland, Oregon-based Black Prairie. Featuring three-fifths of The Decemberists and two of the city's finest folk stylists, the heavily acoustic debut was produced by Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Death Cab for Cutie) and embodies the rich sonic landscape of the Portland music scene while integrating the diverse backgrounds of its members. As described by dobroist Chris Funk, the band's sound bridges the music of Clarence White and Ennio Morricone in a way that defies genre characterization.

Decemberists guitarist Funk and bassist Nate Query hatched the plan to start a primarily instrumental string band while on the road. Funk began to spend time playing the square-necked Dobro guitar, and the pair recruited fellow Decemberist Jenny Conlee to play accordion. Portland musicians Annalisa Tornfelt and Jon Neufeld then filled out the ranks on violin and guitar, respectively.

Black Prairie's songs consist mostly of instrumentals; their arrangements draw from bluegrass and old-time string band traditions, while Conlee's accordion and Tornfelt's violin instill klezmer and gypsy elements to the band's unique and vibrant sound. The quintet sometimes takes an almost-classical approach to composition, with songs containing multiple movements that ebb and flow in a way that differs greatly from traditional pop or bluegrass structure. The band decided it would be a shame not to make use of Tornfelt's vocal ability, so she sings on a handful of tracks as well. The thirteen album tracks include mostly original compositions by the five band members, with a smattering of traditional material intertwined throughout.

    The Gathering

Diane Schuur's debut release for Vanguard Records, The Gathering, is unique in both material and style and features special guests Alison Krauss, Vince Gill, Mark Knopfler, Larry Carlton and Kirk Whalum.

The Gathering is a collection of 10 classic country songs, mostly written during the golden era of the 1960s, and is the first time Diane Schuur has featured this genre of music. On selections like Willie Nelsons Healing Hands of Time, Roger Millers When Two Worlds Collide, Merle Haggards Today I Started Loving You Again and Tammy Wynettes Til I Can Make It on My Own, Schuurs great vocal versatility shines through.

    Fortune

By now, Black Prairie has clearly outgrown its roots as a casual side project, solidifying into a primary, creative focus for its members-a band with its own internal momentum, genuine character and style. Still, it's only become harder to describe what that style is. "I gave up a long time ago," guitarist Jon
Neufeld says. When asked what kind of music Black Prairie plays, Neufeld usually just says "soft rock," and walks away.

Black Prairie's fourth full-length record Fortune is an unexpected departure-which is, strangely, exactly what everyone's come to expect from the band. This group of seasoned musicians from Portland, Oregon-each steeped in traditional American acoustic music-has become hellbent on taking one
imaginative leap after another. "We're a much more fearless writing team now," says bassist Nate Query. The band that started as an informal collective has now materialized into its
own, fully living thing. Getting together to write Fortune last fall after a busy year of touring and tackling smaller, unconventional songwriting projects, the band felt like they had a well-bred, spirited animal hitched up and waiting for them-a horse flaring its nostrils, ready to run-and they wanted to keep
driving it through as many different landscapes as they could.

"It was the most collaborative and magical thing," Chris Funk says. Individual members brought in little strands of ideas, and the band collectively spooled them in like a loom and spun them into songs. Again and again, they found one person's chorus and someone else's verse slapping together like
attractive magnets, or lines for a lyric flying out of all six mouths. In a way, Fortune is also Black Prairie's most conventional record-thirteen, polished vocal tunes with (mostly) conventional pop song structures. On the other hand, there's a glaring eccentricity to Fortune that hits you right away: here is a band of accomplished acoustic musicians playing what are essentially rock songs, and sometimes with a pretty hard edge-it's a record, band members say, that's trying to channel not the spirit of Earl Scruggs or Jerry Douglas, but Led Zeppelin.

Weightless delivers bold, thick pop with rock-and-roll edges. The starkly personal lyrics explore complexities & dysfunction of relationships. Her award-winning songwriting is stronger than ever. Pushing My Luck

Robert Belfour's sophomore effort for Fat Possum -- at 63, he is one of the youngest artists on the roster and is by far the most polished, if the Delta blues can ever really be called that -- proves his debut was indeed only a beginning.

In stark contrast to his labelmates, Belfour strictly plays acoustic blues, but he plays them with the same dark, trancelike feel of Junior Kimbrough, haunting spookiness of Fred McDowell, rhythmic intensity of John Lee Hooker, and sprawling drawl of Lightnin' Hopkins. Ted Gainey aids Belfour on a drum kit.

While the first album was all of a piece, and everything but the vocal seemed to be recorded at the same level (and even then, Belfour couldn't always be understood among the ringing guitars and shuffling drums), Pushin' My Luck is nervier, a bit more edgy. Belfour's truly nearly unbelievable singing is a bit more in the foreground, enough to add to the hypnotic repetition in his music, while the drums -- played no more elaborately than Meg White's in the White Stripes -- are mixed just a tad higher, bringing it extremely close to the punch this stuff has when played in front of a live audience.

Fans of Kimbrough's guitar playing -- or Ali Farka Toure's, for that matter -- will be instantly drawn to the polyrhythmic, droning chords and ambling, elegantly raw, slippery fills that Belfour plays, whether it's on Hill Stomp, the title track, I Got My Eyes on You, Sweet Brown Sugar, or I'm Gonna Leave, which closes the set. The vibe is the same everywhere; this is deep, hot Mississippi blues full of a slow, steamy, writhing sexual vibe; twisted soul; and a sense of foreboding mystery that cannot be mentioned, let alone explained.

This is the first great blues record of 2003 and if it isn't nominated for the W.C. Handy Award, the damned foundation should be disbanded on the basis of deafness. I hope this guy lives to be a 100 and makes a record every year he's on this planet. Forget everything you just read: This record is amazing; just buy it.
