    1987 was a big year for Los Lobos and a huge blockbuster movie called La Bamba based
    on the life and times of the late great Richie Valens. Its success truly made way for a number

    The dream of creating an American opera such as Scott Joplin's Treemonisha, written in 1911, inspired George Gershwin a good twenty years later to amazing compositional feats. While Gershwin had brought his musical and musical comedies with great Éclat to Broadway, he wanted his through-composed stage work Porgy And Bess to be regarded as a legitimate opera.



    No matter whether one regards this exceptional work as »American folk opera« (The New York Times) or as a veristic portrayal of African-American life, central to the work is the expressionistic orchestral music that includes (work) songs, spirituals and elements of jazz, and the cast of singers, which, at the insistence of Gershwin, featured African-American singers.



    This stipulation will certainly have suited Verve boss Norman Granz who engaged not only a fresh and lively big band but also a classical string orchestra to support his successful duo of Ella and Louis. Thanks to this superb line-up, the catchy song I Got Plenty O' Nuttin' rolls along sleekly with swing and drive, while Summertime and Bess, You Is My Woman Now wafts away to the sound of heavenly violins. Listening to this music, you couldn't care less about the genre or category, just as long as these two genial musicians perform wonderfully arranged material from the American Song Book. The incomparable nasal twang of Armstrong's solo trumpet seeks out unerringly jazz elements where you would least expect them.

    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    After Hours With Sarah Vaughan (Pure Pleasure)

    Sarah Vaughan signed for Columbia in 1949 & her chart successes continued with the charting of Black Coffee in the summer of 1949. During her tenure at Columbia through 1953, Vaughan was steered almost exclusively to commercial pop ballads, a number of which had chart success.


    No matter what she's singing you can't help but notice her amazing control and range. She's able to float effortlessly from the lowest end of the scale to the highest without effort. Her singing is as much second nature as breathing is to most of us.


    Listen to Vaughan wrap her voice around a word and you begin to understand what is meant by the term phrasing. You also realize why you don't hear the term used very often anymore as very few modern singers have this ability. It refers to a singer's ability to associate the lyrics of a song with the music. However, it means more than just being able to carry a tune. It's how you sing the words and music together. To be fair the music of today doesn't really lend itself to that style of singing either. However hearing a singer of the quality of Vaughan you begin to regret its passing. I'm sure there are jazz singers around who have the ability, but we don't hear them on a regular basis.


    Of course it's this ability which allowed her to be equally comfortable with any style of music she wished to sing. On this LP we hear her sail through a series of smoothly orchestrated pop tunes. Even the version of Gershwin's Summertime is given the uptempo treatment. This might have been a collection of rather commercial standards, but she gives them a soulfulness that raises them above the level of just another pop song. She might not be as emotionally raw as Billie Holliday, but that doesn't stop her from being able to imbue even the simplest of songs with the heart necessary to make them soar.

    Mick Harvey is pleased to announced details for his latest solo album, FOUR (Acts of Love), a follow up to 2011's Sketches from the Book of the Dead, due out via Mute on June 11th, 2013.


    This is the sixth studio album from this prolific musician, a man renowned for his career with The Birthday Party and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds as well as for his work with soundtracks (Chopper, To Have And To Hold, Australian Rules). In addition to his solo recordings and his feature length soundtracks his work as a Producer also speaks for itself having worked with Anita Lane, Rowland S Howard and most recently PJ Harvey's Mercury Prize winning album, Let England Shake.


    FOUR (Acts of Love) was recorded on two continents at Grace Lane in North Melbourne and Atlantis Sound in Melbourne and features original compositions from Harvey in addition to exciting re-interpreatations of classic hits. Regular

    To meet the standards of Analogue Productions, our Beach Boys album reissues had a mission to achieve: Present the band's music the way that Brian Wilson - famed co-founder, songwriter and arranger - intended. Mono mixes created under Wilson's supervision were how the surf rockin' California crew rose to fame! And we've got 'em!


    For the early part of the Beach Boys career, all of their singles were mixed and mastered and released only in the mono format - they didn't release a single in stereo until 1968. In those days, hits were made on AM radio in mono. And the mono of those times worked well for Wilson, who suffers from partial deafness. Still, apart from Surfin' Safari, which was mono only, the Beach Boys did turn in stereo masters on all of their early albums up until 1965. The Beach Boys Today! was the first LP for which they only delivered a mono master.


    The stereo editions of Surfin' USA, Surfer Girl, Little Deuce Coupe, Shut Down Vol. 2, All Summer Long, Beach Boys Christmas Album and Beach Boys Concert were all mixed in stereo by their own preferred engineer, Chuck Britz, ostensibly under the group's supervision.


    Brian may or may not have been present for those mixing sessions - evidence suggests that he trusted Chuck's skills enough to let him prepare those mixes on his own - but the group held onto their multitrack tapes and delivered stereo masters to Capitol, rather than allowing Capitol to prepare their own stereo versions. Later, when Brian was only delivering mono masters, Capitol would prepare the Duophonic pseudo stereo editions for the stereo market, says Alan Boyd, producer and Beach Boys' archivist.


    All of the newer stereo mixes on these remastered albums (The Beach Boys Today!, Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!), The Beach Boys' Party, Pet Sounds and Smiley Smile) were all done by Mark Linett on behalf of the Beach Boys.


    Still, bottom line, the mono mixes were where Brian Wilson paid intense attention, and the dedication paid off!


    We've taken 10 of the most classic, best-sounding Beach Boy titles ever and restored them to their mono glory!


    But there's no disputing that the close harmonies and one-of-a-kind rhythms of hits like "Surfer Girl," "In My Room," "Little Deuce Coupe" and more lend themselves naturally to stereo. So we've got your 2-channel needs covered with prime stereo mix versions as well.

    Immortalized on the silver screen, Ten Years After's landmark performance of "I'm Going Home" at Woodstock galvanized their reputation as road warriors capable of rousing large crowds - such as the 400,000 festival-goers mesmerized by Alvin Lee's white lightning on his bright red Gibson ES-335."I'm Going Home" could also light up a room as small as Klooks Kleek in London, as heard on their second album, 1968's Undead. But while it was the first recording of the song (with wires running from Decca Studios next door to capture it), it hardly came from nowhere. Alvin Lee and bassist Leo Lyons learned the value of extended jamming as far back as 1962 while playing Hamburg in the Jaybirds, and not long after they began covering Gene Vincent's "I'm Going Home (To See My Baby)" in Ten Years After - it was reworked into something entirely original. Or more specifically: stripped down, repainted, rebuilt and retooled into a drag racer that would scorch crowds for years to come. Undead was the first recorded evidence of that live legacy. Condensed to the best five of the May 14, 1968, set, the album sees the band do further long bluesy jamming with "I May Be Wrong, But I Won't Be Wrong Always," "Spider in My Web," and pound Gershwin into submission (courtesy drummer Ric Lee) on "Summertime/Shantung Cabbage." And on a killer cover of "(At the) Woodchopper's Ball," the band's jazzy blues is hot enough to turn Woody Herman's classic into sawdust - replete with Alvin Lee and organist Chick Churchill trading solos. Rightly regarded as one of the best live albums of its era, Undead is reissued here in its rare mono mix, which has been out of print everywhere for nearly 50 years.It's very much alive on this vinyl edition, which features primo sound and the beautiful negative-image original cover.
