    Cool Cat Blues (Pure Pleasure)

At last! ... British blues legend Georgie Fame finally has his Magnum Opus committed to the stuff we all love.

Contained within is a collection of Blues, Jazz and R&B standards mixed with some originals. This musicians' musician is backed by a world class band including Steve Gadd, Robben Ford, Richard Tee, Will Lee, Ralph MacDonald, Hugh McCracken and an uber horn section. Fame's classy, economic Hammond and great voice inspires superb duets with Bozz Scaggs and Richard Tee. Van Morrison, Fame's erstwhile boss, joins him on Moondance and one of his heroes, Jon Hendricks, aids him to fly through Little Pony. There is a slowed down, super sexy Yeah,Yeah and a blistering take on Willie Dixon's I Love The Life I Live. If you like Brother Ray, Mose Allison, Hoagy Carmichael, Van the Man, Peggy Lee and Lambert, Hendricks & Ross then you'll love this.

On an audiophile note, this studio album from 1990 was recorded 'live' with most tracks done in one or two takes, no overdubs and entirely in the analogue domain. A great album, beautifully recorded, finally done justice on two slabs of 180g by Pure Pleasure.

    • Van Morrison (vocal)

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    The Sides And In Between

The Sides And In Between is the new album from Atlanta band Gringo Star, their first for Nevado Records.

If you know a little about brothers Nick and Peter Furgiuele's roots, it all makes sense. Our grandad started out in radio in the 40s and 50s in Columbus, GA., Nick explains. He was a huge promoter of R&B back when it was still super segregated, and he was playing black music and putting on shows with Little Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Sam Cooke & the Soul Stirrers, a lot of Gospel shows. So we grew up hearing all these stories, listening to all this music. Our grandfather was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame posthumously. And my grandma all her photo albums are like Jackie Wilson shirtless backstage, hanging out. Not to mention how Nick and Peter used to raid their parents record collections, cutting their teeth on the likes of Buddy Holly, The Animals and The Kinks. Our favorite music comes from the 50s, Peter says, and that music influenced all the 60s bands we like.

The band has toured relentlessly across the U.S. and Europe building a diehard underground following while sharing bills with everyone from Cat Power and Feist to The Black Angels and Weezer, and also touring with Wavves, Best Coast, And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead and fellow Atlantans The Black Lips.

    Deep Purple Colored Vinyl

JEFF The Brotherhood will release a brand-new self-produced EP of covers, entitled Dig The Classics, on Warner Bros. Records. Brothers Jake (guitars, vocals) and Jamin Orrall (drums) have chosen six of their favorite songs to include on Dig The Classics, including Pixies' "Gouge Away," My Bloody Valentine's "Come In Alone," Teenage Fanclub's "Mad Dog 20/20," and Beck's "Totally Confused."

Dig The Classics will be released right before JEFF The Brotherhood launch a full-scale fall tour of both the East and West coasts. Supporting on the upcoming tour will be provided by Infinity Cat Records friends Music Band for the Sep dates and Diarrhea Planet on the Oct dates. The band has been putting the finishing touches on their next studio album, the follow to the critically acclaimed Hypnotic Nights, and is expected to be released early next year. Their previous albums and high energy, super-rock live shows has earned the Orrall brothers glowing accolades for their hard rockin', minimalist-maximalist approach from such outlets as Rolling Stone, Spin, The New York Times, USA Today, Pitchfork and many others.

Beck, Bogert & Appice (Speakers Corner)

On the whole, the supergroups of the Seventies didn't last very long, but for that - all the more notably. This certainly applies to the Anglo-American trio made up of the extremely talented though narcissistic guitarist Jeff Beck, the bass-player Tim Bogert, and the drummer Carmine Appice. As early as 1970, the British Beck wanted to engage the two American musicians for a joint project. This plan however had to be postponed for two years because the speed-mad Beck had had a serious car accident and needed time to recover. 1973 saw the release of the trio's first and only studio album, which not only demonstrated Beck's powerful-hectic style of guitar playing but also allowed his musical companions to show off their prowess. The trio applied their musical talents to all facets of rock 'n' roll, right from the bluesy first number (Black Cat Moan), via the agile rock sound of Lady, ending up with the moans of a vocal love ballad (Oh To Love You), followed by a really convincing gospel song (Sweet And Surrender) and the super funky beat of Lose Myself With You.
The trio seemed to lust for more - but this was not to be. For the very next year, during the intense preparations for their next studio album, the moody Jeff Beck dissolved the group on the spur of the moment.

    Musicians:

    • Jeff Beck (guitar, vocal)

    • Jimmy Greenspoon (piano)

    • Duane Hitchings (keyboards,melophone, piano)

    • Tim Bogert (bass)

    • Carmine Appice (drums, vocal)

    • Danny Hutton (background vocal)
