    King Of The Surf Guitar

During his string of intense, sold-out 1961 shows at The Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa, California, Dick Dale is credited with creating the surf guitar sound. An avid surfer himself, Dick strove to recreate the feeling of riding the waves in his music. He accomplished that feat through innovative use of reverb and a rich playing technique that incorporated everything from from short staccato picking to long, legato melody lines. Known far and wide as The King of the Surf Guitar, Capitol Records signed him and named his 1963 label debut album after his undisputed title. Ranging from blistering instrumental takes on tunes like Riders in the Sky and Hava Nagila, to spirited vocal selections like Dick Dale Stomp and Whatd I Say, the album truly captures all aspects of surf culture. All hail the King!

Sourced from the original Capitol Records stereo masters, this Sundazed Music edition of King of the Surf Guitar is pressed on 180-gram vinyl and includes complete original artwork. Surfs up!

    Lost Legends of Surf Guitar

It's hard to think of a musical style that's more quintessentially American than surf music. Springing up along the California coast in the early 1960s, the surf sound-characterized by wet-sounding guitar reverb that echoed the sound of the sea and pummeling rhythms that emulated the ocean's currents-was originally inspired and nurtured by the culture that surrounded the sport. Despite its provincial origins, the surf genre captured the imagination of teenagers around the world, and spawned a remarkably large body of highly original music, with an emphasis on innovative guitar instrumentals that would influence rock axemen for decades to come.

Much of that vintage surf music was originally released on small regional labels, and many of the acts that created some of the greatest surf music never released more than a handful of singles. Those factors resulted in many original surf classics remaining difficult to obtain in recent years. Sundazed Music, a longstanding champion of vintage surf music, went a long way towards remedying that situation with the release of its CD series Lost Legends of Surf Guitar. The series has been widely recognized for rescuing numerous rare, obscure and/or lesser-known gems from surf music's golden age. Now, the landmark series moves into second gear, progressing into the vinyl format with a pair of double-LP collections, each of which features 28 below-the-radar vintage surf killers.

Lost Legends of Surf Guitar gathers a rousing, roaring assortment of underground surf classics and underappreciated gems by such notable surf combos as the Challengers, the Pyramids, the Tornadoes, Jerry Cole & His Spacemen, the Catalinas, the Centurions, the Essex, the Jesters, the Rhythm Rockers, the Royal Coachmen, the Tandems and Dave Myers and His Surftones, as well as numbers by both the Surfaris and the Original Surfaris! There's also a rarely-heard track by legendary Minnesota surf-garage kings the Trashmen, the out-there Devil Surfer by Scott Engel (who would soon go on to pop stardom and cult acclaim as Scott Walker) and scarce versions of such surf anthems as Jack the Ripper, Point Panic and Moondawg.

This essential collection, meticulously mastered from rare vintage tapes and pressed on high-quality vinyl, is the perfect collection for gremmie and ho-dad alike, so grab this wave and jump head-first into the surf!!!

    Surfer's Choice

In the half-century since he began his reign as King of the Surf Guitar, Dick Dale has remained one of rock's most innovative and influential axemen. A bold pioneer in the use of speed, volume and sonic texture, the charismatic Dale invented surf music, and in the process permanently altered the role of the electric guitar in rock 'n' roll.

Although he began releasing singles on his own Deltone label in the late '50s, Dale made much of his most enduring music during his '60s stint with Capitol Records. Now, Sundazed is making Dick Dale's reverb-soaked, genius LPs available once again, the way they were meant to be heard, on vinyl. Sundazed vinyl restoration of the vintage Dale catalog features his landmark studio albums Surfer's Choice, King of the Surf Guitar, Checkered Flag, Mr. Eliminator and Summer Surf, originally released between 1962 and 1964. All of those albums have been mastered from the original analog tapes, and are packaged with their complete original cover art.

Dick Dale's scorching 1962 debut LP Surfer's Choice features the surf classics 'Let's Go Trippin',' 'Peppermint Man and 'Surf Beat.

    Ramble On

The Ramblin' Ambassadors' third album for Mint Records proves again that the Canadian West is the true home of instrumental rock 'n' roll. Serving up another platter of big beat, no bullshit guitar instrumentals, the boys from Calgary kick up way more turf than surf.

Ever spend too much time at the Brazilian Barbecue? One hot dog too many? Then check out "Meat Sweats"; a greasy homage to that pulled pork you just washed down with a shot of cheap booze. "Back Seat Action" recalls borrowing Mom's land yacht for the big date, and every electric note of "Dallas B. Goode" counts the odometer clicks on your '56 Buick, or maybe even your '73 Pacer. Parties ("Clambake!"), cars ("Super Bee") and even the environmental activism of the forest-scorching "Pine Beetle Express" define what occupies the rock 'n' roll minds of The Ramblin' Ambassadors.

Ramble On was recorded entirely in the band's secret underground bunker, under the tutelage of musical whiz-kid Russell Broom. The album strips the Ambassadors' sound even further back, with pretty much a single track for each instrument. Ramble On has the familiar fiery twin guitar attack of Brent J. Cooper and Gentleman Doug Waite, and careful listeners will notice that Cooper occupies one side of the stereo spectrum and Waite the other.

Scott Nickless rides the yellow line, keeping his big bass right up the middle, and Tyler Pickering's able drumming puts the tyger in the tank. Ramble On maintains the reputations of the Ambassadors' two previous Mint releases, slamming home the fact that they remain, according to Exclaim Magazine, "one of the best instrumental acts around today."

    Guitar Freakout

The late L.A. session guitar genius Jerry Cole has long been worshipped for his work with everyone from the Beach Boys and the Byrds to Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley and by surf fans as the leader of the Spacemen. But unbeknownst to many, Cole was also the driving force behind the Animated Egg, a fictitious band whose lone, self-titled 1967 LP is one of the greatest psychedelic exploitation records ever to hit the budget bins of U.S. chain storesand eventually the want lists of big-spending DJs and collectors.

Comprised of splashy, fuzz-drenched Now Sound instrumental groovers, The Animated Egg easily lives up to both the eBay hype and the promise of its evocative track titles: Sure Listic, Sock It My Way, Sippin and Trippin, andyes indeedI Said, She Said, Ah Cid. In addition to the rare self-titled LP by the Animated Egg, this collection also includes cuts by other related Cole projects: the Projection Company, the Generation Gap, T. Swift & the Electric Bag, and the Stone Canyon Rock Group. Sourced from the original analog masters, Sundazeds glorious CD and high-definition double-LP vinyl editions of this hallowed prize are a must for turntablists and brain-trippers alike.

As Stowaways In Cabinets Of Surf

Asthmatic Kitty Records presents the fifth Half-Handed Cloud full-length album: As Stowaways in Cabinets of Surf, We Live-out in Our Members a Kind of Rebirth, or Stowaways for short. Connected with the lyrical tradition of 19th Century American hymns such as Shall We Gather at the River? Are You Washed in the Blood of the Lamb? and There Shall Be Showers of Blessing, these tunes splash about in cavernous spaces opened up by irregularly measured rhythms and pocket-orchestra arrangements integrated with creaky pianos, sound-loops, a tugboat of a church organ, guitars, and billowing banjos.

Half-handed Clouds John Ringhofer recorded this album on his half-inch reel-to-reel tape machine in the sanctuary and custodial quarters of a church in Berkeley, California, where hes lived and worked as a custodian for the past seven years. He played most of the parts himself, joined by friends on cello, clarinet, violin, trumpet, and flute. Brandon Buckner, one-third of Ringhofers former band, Wookieback, is behind the drum-kit for the duration of this record. The album was mixed with Daniel Smith (Danielson) at Familyre Studio in Clarksboro, New Jersey.

Joe Satriani is one of the world's best and most well-known guitarists. Early in his career, Satriani worked as a guitar instructor, and among his students were now famous guitarists Steve Vai, Larry LaLonde, Kirk Hammett, Andy Timmons, Charlie Hunter and Alex Skolnick. He himself is influenced by blues-rock guitar icons such as Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore and Jeff Beck. Satriani worked with a range of musicians from several musical genres, including Mick Jagger, Deep Purple, John Petrucci, Eric Johnson, Yngwie Malmsteen, Brian May, Patrick Rondat, Paul Gilbert, Adrian Legg, and Robert Fripp. He is currently the lead guitarist for the supergroup Chickenfoot.

'Surfing with the Alien' is Satriani's second album, released in 1987 and meant his breakthrough to a larger audience. It was the first instrumental rock record to enter the charts in a very long time. Although the album contains fast and complex songs as well as slower, melodic songs Satriani's unique style is always easily recognizable.

Jack Dalrymple has cultivated a near legendary status with his involvement in One Man Army, Swingin Utters, Dead To Me, and The Revolts. Of course, few musicians in punk rock possess a calling card like Jack's velvety vocals, but his song writing and guitar work are just as renowned. All three talents are on full display in Jack's ultra-stylized fuzz-punk and garage sound, which even incorporates elements of surf, '60s soul, and power-pop.

As the creator of both surf and hot rod music and one of the most influential guitarists ever to plug in, turn up and utterly destroy a fretboard, Dick Dale has long been revered by countless music lovers and musicians around the world; Jimi Hendrix and the Beach Boys, to name a few. Rightfully called the 'King of the Surf Guitar,' Dale pioneered the use of speed and volume and boldly forged the way for garage rock, punk and heavy metal. From the stuttering thump of Let's Go Trippin' to the wildly whipping, Middle Eastern flurry of Miserlou and beyond, Sundazed's sizzling round-up of Dick Dale & His Del-Tones' landmark 1960s singles, each sourced from the original mono singles masters, captures Dale in all of his string-shredding, reverb-soaked glory.

    Lucky

Lucky, the title of Nada Surf's fifth album, is at once literal and ironic. Like the songs that singer-guitarist Matthew Caws, bassist Daniel Lorca and drummer Ira Elliot crafted for their previous two albums, let go (2003) and the weight is a gift (2005), lucky is filled with images of restlessness, longing and the elusiveness of love. Yet the band counterbalances the lyrical bittersweetness with a musical buoyancy. Intimate songs become in-it-together anthems, thanks to the chiming guitars, propulsive rhythms, and the emotional candor in Caws' vocals. A song like beautiful beat segues from a sparsely arranged, confessional first verse into a harmony-laden chorus and reaches multi-layered, canon-like proportions before the track fades out. If Caws is often suggesting that romance and resolution may still be an inch or two out of reach, he's also proffering immediate musical solace. Turn up the volume, hit the repeat button, and your troubles, for a blissful three minutes or so, will disappear.

    Big Smoke London Town

The Dustaphonics occupy the space where the talented few, committed and bright, stick to their guns'. Some groups are capable of doing things more intensely than others. The Dustaphonics is a group that knows how to grab your attention and get people dancing. The music is a fantastic mash-up that details their musical influences, from booze-soaked 1950s rhythm and blues, vintage stomping 'buttshaker' soul, '60s garage rock and british beat / r&b, Vegas lounge, sleazy grind instrumentals and surf guitar. And the whole deal is sealed and delivered with the spirit of '70s punk. Although the influences are vintage, there is something remarkably and distinctively fresh and progressive about their songs that takes the music beyond simple imitation and infuses it with tremendous energy and passion.

Rock Out With Dick Dale And His Del-Tones (Live At Ciro's)

Prior to his emergence as a recording artist, surf guitar king Dick Dale first carved out his legend as a live performer. The artist's incendiary early shows in front of raucous surfer crowds at Balboa Beach's Rendezvous Ballroom established Dale as a regional sensation, and in the process helped to put surf music on the map. After he became an international star, Dale and his longstanding band the Del-Tones maintained the energy and innovation of their early performances, expanding their reputation as a peerless live act.

In 1965, Dale captured the infectious spirit of his live shows with this album, recorded on stage at the fabled Hollywood nightclub Ciro's. This vintage LP offers a bracing snapshot of the trailblazing guitar hero at his string-shredding best, tearing into his classic Let's Go Trippin', and applying his head-spinning instrumental fire to such diverse tunes as Henry Mancini's Peter Gunn, Lee Hazlewood's Angry Generation and Bob Dylan's Blowin' in the Wind. He also unveils his underrated vocal skills on riveting readings of Eddie Cochran's Summertime Blues, Barrett Strong's Money and Ray Charles' What'd I Say.

Out of print on vinyl for decades, the Sundazed edition of Rock Out with Dick Dale and His Del-Tones (Live at Ciro's) has been mastered from the original analog tapes and pressed on high-quality 180-gram vinyl, with completely restored original cover art.

Queen Of The Minor Key (Awaiting Repress)

On new album Queen of the Minor Key, Eilen Jewell and her ace band conjure up songs depicting broken bottles as protection, bad voodoo and Cupid using a sawed-off shotgun instead of a bow and arrow. The dark, often times haunted tales on the album are fleshed out at points by surf guitar, pedal steel and upright bass, but always hold Jewells smoldering voice and unforgettable lyrics center stage.

The lines did not come easily at first, as Jewell was struck with a severe case of writers block when she began the follow-up to the critically acclaimed Sea of Tears. To help she retreated to a cabin in the mountains of Idaho, where the Boston based artist is originally from. With no electricity and no running water, she was able to focus on crafting sketches of songs, breaking her block and building the framework of Queen of the Minor Key.

Jewell and her longtime band of Jason Beek (drums, harmony vocals), Jerry Miller (electric, acoustic and steel guitars), and Johnny Sciascia (upright bass) turned the sketches into songs. A crack unit with an innate musical connection developed after playing 150 plus shows a year for the last five years, the band has an impressive array of styles and sounds displayed fully on the album. From the rollicking, hard-edged rockabilly surf of the title track to the whining pedal steel and gentle strum of the autobiographical Santa Fe.

The Modern Lovers were an American rock band led by Jonathan Richman in the 70s and 80s. The original band existed from 1970 to 1974 but their recordings were not released until 1976 or later.

Live catches Jonathan Richman at the height of his candy-floss novelty period. The music is warm and mild, almost all of it derived from 50s and early-60s models such as surf idioms and guitar instrumentals.

Live has become somewhat of a cult classic the last couple of decades and is guaranteed to get you in a good mood. Pure joy, happiness and bliss...

    Checkered Flag

Though he was renowned as The King of the Surf Guitar, Dick Dale detoured onto the drag strip in 1963 and created Checkered Flag, a landmark album of the hot-rod genre. Backed by studio pros like Hal Blaine, Earl Palmer, Plas Johnson and Steve Douglas, Dick laid down tough, reverb-soaked instrumentals like Night Rider and The Wedge, highlighting his unique technique and deeply varied sonic textures. The album also features vocal numbers, like lead track The Scavenger, penned by some of the top pop tunesmiths of the day, including Gary Usher, Gary Paxton and Carol Connors. Whether vocal or instrumental, each and every one of these songs invokes the sound, speed and spirit of the racetrack, with motors roaring and crowds cheering. Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines!

Sourced from the original Capitol Records stereo masters, this Sundazed Music edition of Checkered Flag is pressed on 180-gram vinyl and includes complete original artwork. What are you waiting for? Hop in your ho-dad machine now and go grab a copy!

    Floating Features

Los Angeles has often been described as a "dream factory"--both a mecca where dreamers
converge to pursue long-held aspirations, and a topography of hallucinogenic contradictions:
enchanting tangerine sunsets diffused by smog, crystal-clutching spiritualists mingling with
deep-pocketed narcissists, rows of scenic palms competing with garish billboards for
    commuters' attention.

It was against this backdrop that the four members of La Luz--singer/guitarist Shana Cleveland,
drummer Marian Li Pino, keyboardist Alice Sandahl, and bassist Lena Simon--conceived
of Floating Features, the band's third studio album. For this, their most ambitious release yet,
La Luz consulted landscapes both physical and psychological.

References to dreams abound on Floating Features. "Loose Teeth" catalyzes nightmare fuel
into a propulsive, intentionally-disorienting collision of honeyed harmonies and Takeshi
Terauchi-esque jetstreams of distorted surf guitar. "Mean Dream" unsurprisingly mines dreamstate
imagery, and the lyrics and melody for "Walking Into the Sun" actually came to Cleveland
during a particularly-vivid night of deep sleep. Looming over the album's coterie of surreal
figures (gargantuan cicadas, a monstrous "Creature," The Sun King, aliens, the titular "Lonely
Dozer") is the magnificent "Greed Machine," a skulking, insatiable engine of consumption-Nathanael
West's "business of dreams" fearsomely manifested.

Only La Luz could conjure up Floating Features' Leone-on-LSD vibes, and the album finds the
L.A. band at the height of their powers--golden rebels in a golden dream.

    From Chaos (Awaiting Repress)

Upon 311's vigorous return, vocalist S.A. Martinez declares, I'm on a new high with a pen and a pad, and for fun I attend a jam that's super bad. While the members of the Omaha-bred quintet aren't lyrical rocket scientists, these disciples of positivity have nonetheless re-emerged on a new high with a jam that's super bad. From Chaos astonishes and impresses with considerable energy and focus, proving itself as the album 311 has always been capable of making. With Tim Mahoney's razor-edged riffing and Nick Hexum and Martinez's super-charged vocals, their Volcano label debut rocks harder and rides smoother than each preceding effort.

Amidst their signature hip-hop/heavy rock/reggae hybrid, 311 additionally blends surf guitar over jungle beats, merges punk guitar with dancehall, and introduces ska, à la Hexum's autobiographical I'll Be Here Awhile, to their sonic repertoire. Tracks such as the carpe diem-inspired Wake Your Mind Up and the boastful Sick Tight prove the quintet hasn't forsaken their old-school formula, while the amorous Amber, perhaps their most charming composition, exhibits a melodic versatility and musical ambition unlike many of their pigeonholed contemporaries. Under the technical lead of veteran producer and engineer Ron Saint Germain (aka Saint), From Chaos effectively captures the energy of the live shows, per bassist P-Nut, and despite the band's growing musical complexity, each selection remains a perfect candidate for the well-traveled road ahead. Drummer Chad Sexton affirms it's our best-performed record, and despite the album's semi-ironic title, he couldn't be more right. Whether employing the computer or stereo for amusement, From Chaos is the sonic cornerstone for remarkably original rap-metal. ~ Jacob N. Lunders, Rovi

    Dancing at the Blue Lagoon

On their last album, Bigfoot, Cayucas debuted in a way that defied their namesake, the sleepy seaside town
of Cayucos, CA. They grew from bedroom strumming to a band that toured the world and whose songs
raced across the radio. But as Zach Yudin and his twin brother and bandmate, Ben, went in to create what
would become their new album, what it all came back to was something more personal. While they now call
Los Angeles home, they drew from the nostalgia of their childhood growing up in Davis, CA; the nostalgia
in their music that is as much about a place they've never been (that maybe no one's been to) as any actual
experience. It was a freedom to imagine, to explore ideas. And it was that wandering imagination and
a punchy California dream that eventually grew to become Dancing at the Blue Lagoon.

While their sun-drenched, jangly, sometimes melancholic sound is quintessentially Californian, the album
very much their California. It's the sound of kids from the suburbs who fantasize in Technicolor, whose view
of the Golden State is its own form of idealism. You can hear it loud and clear in the easygoing confidence
throughout on the crisp, backbeat-driven "Hella" or as "Moony Eyed Walrus" takes surf guitar into
fragmented, unpredictable places. The impossibly catchy and heartbreaking "Backstroke" is a Murakamiinspired detective story, neo-noir that is equal parts stylization and gut-level emotion.

That said, Dancing at the Blue Lagoon is all about a band testing its comfort zone and asking us to do the
same. "Big Winter Jacket" is a world away from sun-kissed pop, with acoustic guitars that build
into something grand and expansive. The after-hours piano ballad "Ditches," like much of Dancing at the
Blue Lagoon, takes pop conventions and digs into them. Like the Beach Boys of Sunflower or Surf's Up,
it reminds us that sadness and uncertainty are never far from the surface, even in Cayucas's most carefree
moments. It casts some like the title track "Dancing at the Blue Lagoon"-a lilting tropical fantasia-in
    an entirely different light.

As the primary songwriter, Zach depends on this kind of versatility. "I write on a song-by-song basis," he
says. It's been that way ever since he started taking music more seriously in college. Zach and Ben would
"create bands that were more like a musical idea," record a few songs, and then move on. Cayucas grew out
    of this period of experimentation.

The real core of the record is the almost harrowing "Blue Lagoon (Theme Song)." Accompanied by a lone
guitar, Zach's performance is emotionally raw and technically precise, the kind of statement that
gives Dancing at the Blue Lagoon real substance. Like a great actor whose art rings true because of an honest, human streak, Cayucas has taken sound we thought we knew and turned in into something personal and complex.

    Living On The Other Side

The Donkeys are more than simply four California beach bums who love to surf, drink beer, and jam as the sun sets over the Pacific. If their back story contains those top-down cars and suntanned utopian surf tableaus, it also contains the malaise and the escape fantasies familiar to all suburban kids of the 80s and 90s. Miraculously, the music manages to communicate both moods at once. Any expression of existential ennui - is this all there is? - is soothed by an unrushed guitar lick and a harmonized twang that becomes almost meditative. This record is about rolling down the windows, cranking up the stereo, and hitting the open road.

    White Lightning: Lost Cadence Sessions

Surf, Cycles and Super Guitar Crunch! The kids of 1958 loved 'em, and their first single for Cadence Records shot up the charts like a label owner's dream. This is the fantastic and fiery album that was supposed to have been released as a follow-up to one of the all-time great instrumental classics, the ultra-menacing "Rumble." But faster than you can say "Drag Race," everyone-Cadence label-owner Archie Bleyer included-was talking about this new threat to the morals of American youth. That's why Link and his boys were off the imprint, and this album of prime distorto-guitar-crunch cool remained unreleased for nearly 50 years. Well here it is, and it's every bit as dirty and dangerous as you would expect!
