    Survival

    Features Original Artwork

Containing what is considered Marley's most defiant and politically charged statement to date, Survival concerns itself with the expressed solidarity of not only Africa, but of humanity at large. The album was controversial right down to the jacket, which contains a crude schematic of the stowage compartment of a typical transatlantic slave ship.

Survival is intended as a wake-up call for everyman to resist and fight oppression in all of its insidious forms. From Tyrone Downie's opening synthesizer strains on So Much Trouble in the World to the keyboard accents emerging throughout Zimbabwe, the sounds of Survival are notably modern. The overwhelming influence of contemporary African music is also cited with the incorporation of brass, á la Fela Kuti and his horn-driven Africa '70. While Top Rankin', Ride Natty Ride, and Wake Up and Live are the most obvious to benefit from this influence, there are other and often more subtle inspirations scattered throughout. Survival could rightly be considered a concept album. Marley had rarely been so pointed and persistent in his content. The days of the musical parable are more or less replaced by direct and confrontational lyrics.

From the subversive Zimbabwe -- which affirms the calls for the revolution and ultimate liberation of the South African country -- to the somewhat more introspective and optimistic Africa Unite, the message of this album is clearly a call to arms for those wanting to abolish the subjugation and tyranny of not only Africans, but all humankind. Likewise, Survival reinforces the image of Marley as a folk hero to those suffering from oppression.

    Mad Max: Fury Road

From director George Miller, originator of the post-apocalyptic genre and mastermind behind the legendary Mad Max franchise, comes Mad Max: Fury Road, a return to the world of the Road Warrior, Max Rockatansky. An apocalyptic story set in the furthest reaches of our planet, in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, and almost everyone is crazed fighting for the necessities of life.

Within this world exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order. There's Max, a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos. And Furiosa, a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland.

The film's epic score is written by Tom Holkenborg, aka Junkie XL, a Grammy nominated and multi-Platinum producer, musician, and composer. Junkie XL's versatility puts him on the cutting edge of contemporary music, as well as in the vanguard of exciting new film composers. He is able to draw on his extensive knowledge of Classical forms and structures while keeping one finger planted firmly on the pulse of popular music. When this eclectic background is paired with his skill as a multi-instrumentalist (he plays keyboards, guitar, drums, violin, and bass) and mastery of studio technology, a portrait emerges of an artist for whom anything is possible.

    Strength To Survive

DC-based reggae rock act SOJA present their highly anticipated label debut, Strength To Survive on ATO Records. The 12-song set was produced by John Alagia (Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, O.A.R.)

SOJA plays in a realm similar to the one Ben Harper went towards on his album Fight For Your Mind and Citizen Cope echoed on Clarence Greenwood Recordings. You can clearly hear hope and love flowing through Jake Hemphill's voice as he sings original consciously minded reggae with the conviction of an old soul. - Jambase

    Love What Survives

Love What Survives is the long awaited third studio album from Mount Kimbie. Its the most confident statement of intent from the boundary-pushing duo yet, and an embodiment of their career-long musical progression. The album is the product of three years of intense creative development, continually honed by the duo writing and rewriting their ideas to form something wholly idiosyncratic and personal. It brings together the voices of their close friends and collaborators - who together represent a bright corner of young artistic talent - James Blake, Micachu and King Krule, within the immersive, unique atmosphere of a Mount Kimbie album.

    How Will The Wolf Survive?

Produced by T-Bone Burnett, the major breakthrough of Los Lobos' How Will The Wolf Survive? was a launching pad for the tried & true sound of these Latin American musical heroes. Honing their craft in '70s L.A. by doing loads of weddings and dance gigs, they incorporated Rock into their Mexican sound which resulted in a Pop staple of legendary proportions. The band switch easily between Rockers like "Don't Worry Baby" and "A Matter Of Time" and modern Mexican evergreens "Corrida #1" and "Serenata Norteña".

As one-third of Yellow Magic Orchestra and an Academy Award-winning composer for his work on the soundtrack for The Last Emperor, synth pop innovator Ryuichi Sakamoto is among the most groundbreaking artists to have emerged since the late 70s. A musician's musician, Ryuichi Sakamoto has created intriguing musical unions with artists such as David Sylvian, Iggy Pop, Tony Williams, Bootsy Collins, Jacques Morelenbaum and many others.

Following the massively successful release of the electronic masterpiece async in 2017, Ryuichi Sakamoto's first studio album in eight years, Milan is proud to announce the remix compilation async remodels. async remodels features a dozen remixes of async's tracks by a who's-who of experimental giants - everyone from Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson (Arrival, Sicario) to Oneohtrix Point Never (composer of Good Times) to Arca (producer of Bjork's numerous releases) have gotten their hands dirty remixing Sakamoto's work. Even reworks by the Canadian synthpop duo Electric Youth and Austin-based synthwave legends S U R V I V E are included.

async remodels is also getting the vinyl treatment. Pressed on a pair of 180g black LPs for superior audio quality and housed in a matte coated gatefold jacket, this is one vinyl release Sakamoto fans can't afford to miss.

    Loose Power

When Unwound broke up in 2002, the pioneering post-rock band left a hole in the musical firmament that dozens of acts have been trying and failing to patch up in the years since. Try as they might, they could never quite reach the perfect balance of tension and release, spiny and smooth that made the Olympia-based trio's work so damn powerful.

Bringing together two ex-Unwound bandmates Justin Trosper and Brandt Sandeno, Survival Knife is another bracing and energetic shot to the dome by these singular songwriters, and one that they are eager to embrace.

Getting to this point, however, took some doing. Unlike all of his former musical brethren, singer/guitarist Trosper didn't have any interest in music after Unwound split. Instead, he moved to Los Angeles for a stretch, going to school and helping other bands with recording projects. But after returning to his hometown of Olympia, the itch to take up his guitar against the world returned, and, with the help of longtime musical companion Sandeno and his friends Kris Cunningham (drums) and Meg Cunningham (bass), Survival Knife was born.

The quartet already garnered a great deal of attention. The West Coast has already had a taste of what Survival Knife has to offer thanks to plenty of NW dates and a tour the band did last year with Modest Mouse. Once Loose Power is in the world, there will be little hope of holding back and soon we'll all be following Survival Knife into the abyss.

Far from the twin epicenters of New York and Miami, Carlos Ruiz and his Ebirac label were both feeling and generating the aftershocks of the mid-'70s salsa boom. Holed up in their own bustling Puerto Rican community center on Chicago's west side, these third coast salseros plied their trade outside the hot lights, cutting their teeth in city parks, VFW halls, and Holiday Inn rec rooms. Social Distortion's third eponymous album from 1990 turned out to be their best-known work and would come to spawn the most hits, with singles 'Ball And Chain', 'Story Of My Life' and the Johnny Cash cover 'Ring Of Fire'.

It mixed Punk with Rockabilly, Blues & Country, and split the difference between Rockabilly and Ramones-style Punk.

Savage (Songs from a Broken World)

Marking Numan's 22nd full-length of his career, Savage follows 2013's Splinter (Songs From a Broken Mind). Produced by Ade Fenton and recorded in Los Angeles and the UK, the record was largely written during the last presidential election. Trump's victory and climate policies became Numan's twisted inspiration, leading to a concept album set in a post-global warming apocalypse. A press release describes the concept best:

There is no technology left and most of the planet has turned to a desolate desert wasteland. Food is scarce, water even more so, and human kindness and decency are just a dim and distant memory. Western and Eastern cultures have merged, more because of the need to simply survive than any feelings of greater tolerance or understanding. It's a harsh, savage environment, as are the survivors who still roam across it.

The songs are about the things that people do in such a harsh and terrifying environment, Numan said in a statement. It's about a desperate need to survive and they do awful things in order to do so, and some are haunted by what they've done. That desire to be forgiven, along with some discovered remnants of an old religious book, ultimately encourages religion to resurface, and it really goes downhill from there.

In early 2009, James McMurtry traveled overseas for his first European tour. The guys played for enthusiastic crowds in Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, The Netherlands, Scotland, and Belgium. Joining McMurtrys band on keyboards for the tour was the legendary Ian McLagan (who also played on McMurtrys latest studio album, JustUs Kids). McMurtry combined the best recordings from the Amsterdam and Geislingen concerts to create Live in Europe.

The deluxe vinyl version includes inserted copies of the CD and a bonus DVD. Fellow Austin-based songwriter, Jon Dee Graham, opened the shows on the tour and joins the band on a version of his tune, Laredo, on the bonus DVD.

    The Bloom And The Blight

Two Gallants, the San Francisco folk-punk duo prone to accidents and police raids, spent roughly four years on hiatus before making this album. You might suspect their primary motivation was staying in one piece and out of the slammer. But the time apart also had an unintended, quite positive consequence: It gave childhood friends Adam Stephens and Tyson Vogel time to recharge their batteries and come back with their most cohesive set of music yet. Now signed to Dave Matthews' ATO Records, the group that got its start playing impromptu shows outside the 16th Street BART Station still retains its scrappy charm, whether pounding through fuzzy, primal ditties such as Song of Songs or making like Dylan on the gorgeous ballad Broken Eyes. Here's hoping they survive the promotion cycle.

    A Quiet Darkness

The album, due for release through Downtown Records on 16 April marks a huge departure for the group sonically. Founder and songwriter Dexter Tortoriello told us last year that it's very much a record that tells a story: "I had this idea to do a concept album about this guy walking across the country to find his wife after a nuclear disaster occurs. The idea is that everyone in the western part of the country has been exposed to a great deal of radiation and is dying off, some more slowly than others. The man is trying to find his wife, not so they can survive together, but so they can die together."

Although built up of many samples, most of which were recorded "inside abandoned houses and along the deserted highways and ghost towns of the Mojave Desert", fans can expect a more explorative and fully formed 'band' sound than previous material.

    Northern Passages

Recorded in the basement of Dallas and Travis' parents' home north of Toronto over the winter of 2015, the familiar surroundings and lack of distractions resulted in a consistent feel, despite the eclecticism at the heart of The Sadies' sound. The psych-folk flourishes on tracks such as "Riverview Fog" are no mere homage; this is the sound of our inscrutable world, and how we manage to survive in it. Kurt Vile appears on "Easy (Like Walking)."

The Sadies are a band that fans cling to like a closely guarded secret, with each new release fulfilling the promise to reach further, for all of our sakes, not just their own. With Northern Passages, the time has come to make room for more on this wild acid-folk-country-punk trip, and trust me, we'll be better off because of it.

Discovery is the recording project of Rostam Batmanglij and Wes Miles, friends who began recording together in the summer of 2005. One year later they had committed themselves to their respective bands, Vampire Weekend and Ra Ra Riot, but nonetheless continued to record together when they both found themselves in the same city. The project is many things: it's partly an attempt to realize Wes' concept of a band where everyone plays synthesizers, and of Rostam's concept for an album where handclaps keep the backbeat instead of snares drums. It's an embrace and also a commentary on the pop music of the past decade, of booming 808 bass and jittery sixteenth note high-hats. Elements of European electronic dance music skittering in double-time over steady R&B. If soul music is secularized, sexualized gospel, Discovery is an attempt to see if soul music can survive being plasticized, roboticized, quantized, chopped, and finally, screwed. The album features Rostam and Wes each singing half the songs and guest vocals from Ezra Koenig (Vampire Weekend) and Angel Deradoorian (Dirty Projecters).

    Disillusion

O'Brother return with their sophomore studio album Disillusion, The band ventured out of their hometown of Atlanta, GA to the bitter cold of Long Island this past winter to hole up in the studio with engineer/producer Mike Sapone (Brand New, Public Enemy, Daytrader). The result is a heavier, refined follow-up to the band's critically acclaimed 2012 debut Garden Window which the Wall Street Journal's Jim Fusilli described as, " a brutalizing blend of
industrial rock, alt-metal and metal featuring a three-guitar attack ." In addition the album
had both Guitar World and Decibel comparing them to Radiohead and the Melvins and Consequence of Sound threw in Queens of the Stone Age and Tool comparisons, summing things up with " Garden Window feels really fucking loud, and does this really fucking well ."

After wrapping things in the studio, the band hit the road this spring with the legendary Alice In Chains for a stint of support dates and along the way, appeared at a number of festivals including
Rock on the Range and Rocklahoma. In the past three years, they have been on countless national tours, sharing the stage with Manchester Orchestra, The Dear Hunter, Cage the Elephant, Alice In Chains, Thrice, Caspian, and Circa Survive along with a handful of headlining tours. O'Brother is extremely excited to continue on the festival tip by making their first ever appearance at Lollapalooza in Chicago this August just weeks before Disillusion is set to drop.

    The Woods

"Sleater-Kinney is America's best rock band" - Greil Marcus, Time (2001)

Sleater-Kinney is an acclaimed, American rock band that formed in
Olympia, Washington in 1994. The band's core lineup consists of Corin
Tucker (vocals and guitar), Carrie Brownstein (guitar and vocals), and
Janet Weiss (drums). Sleater-Kinney were known for their feminist,
left-leaning politics, and were an integral part of the riot grrrl and indie
rock scenes in the Pacific Northwest.

The Woods is the seventh and final studio album from Sleater-Kinney,
released on May 24, 2005 by Sub Pop. It was produced by Dave
Fridmann and recorded from November 2004 to December 2004 at
Tarbox Road Studios in Cassadaga, New York.

The Woods reached #80 on the US Billboard Top 200 chart and #2
on the Independent Albums chart. The album appeared at number four
in The Village Voice's "Pazz & Jop" critics' poll for 2005.

"They bash Eighties nostalgia, tell a feminist fairy tale and even quiet
down for a couple sensitive love songs - needed breaks from music so
intense you wonder how they can contain its explosiveness." [100 Best
Albums of the 2000's] - Rolling Stone

"To survive these days, you have to be either suicidal or superficial.
Sleater-Kinney, meanwhile, get by simply sounding fucking supersonic."
    [9.0/10] - Stephen Deusner, Pitchfork

The album has been freshly remastered by Greg Calbi for this release.
This reissue coincides with Sub Pop's release of
remastered versions of Sleater-Kinney's six other albums, as well as a
limited-edition, deluxe vinyl box set featuring all seven albums.

Far Cry Primal: Original Game Soundtrack

Two-time BAFTA winning composer, Jason Graves has composed the original game soundtrack for the next exciting chapter in the award-winning Far Cry® franchise, Far Cry® Primal. Graves is renowned for his textural concept scores and cinematic orchestration on AAA titles such as Until Dawn, The Order: 1886, Evolve, Tomb Raider and Dead Space.

As a classically-trained composer and world percussionist, Graves created an entirely live organic score for Far Cry® Primal, blending a diverse array of sounds from the natural environment and incorporating many animal effects into the score. The evocative soundtrack features a unique set of textures representing each of the tribes that players will encounter, including a ram's horn and solo flute (Wenja); Aztec death whistles, female vocals, ritualistic percussion (Izilia); raw sounds from Far Cry's Stone Age natural environment including bushes, bones, antlers, clay pots, wooden artifacts and male vocals (Udam). Crafted together the sounds bring the rich and primal gameplay alive to players challenged to survive in a hostile environment and rise to become the apex predator.

    Feeling The Space

If you've listened to Feeling the Space, Yoko Ono's personal-is-political 1973 album, it should come as no surprise that the once-reviled artist is inspiring a new generation of activists in 2017.On such songs as the righteous chant "Woman Power," the empathetic ballad "Angry Young Woman," the hilarious proto-grrrl "Potbelly Rocker," and the satirical "Men Men Men," Yoko sings in surprisingly straightforward fashion about the burdens carried by women and the mandate for feminism. Supported by such skilled studio vets as guitarist David Spinozza, sax player Michael Brecker, and drummer Jim Keltner, this is perhaps Yoko's most accessible album, and her most intimate.

Feeling the Space was recorded during the time when the avant-garde visionary artist became estranged from her rock-star husband John Lennon. He plays only briefly on the album (billed as Johnny O'cean); she produced and wrote all the songs. The result is a definitive soundtrack/document of the era of consciousness raising and of radical critique of the family structure. Yoko and company deliver this hard message soft rock style, or as soft as Yoko could get. Yoko was on the front lines of the women's liberation movement. Dedicated "to the sisters who died in pain and sorrow and those who are now in prisons and in mental hospitals for being unable to survive in the male society," it's an emotional exploration of the psychological toll of oppression.
