    Seer (Awaiting Repress)

Received a 9.0 Best New Music rating from Pitchfork. The Seer took 30 years to make. It's the culmination of every previous Swans album as well as any other music I've ever made, been involved in, or imagined. But it's unfinished, like the songs themselves. It's one frame in a reel. The frames blur, blend and will eventually fade.

The songs began on an acoustic guitar, then were fleshed out with (invaluable) help from my friends, then were further tortured and seduced in rehearsals, live, and in the studio, and now they await further cannibalism and force-feeding as we prepare to perform some of them live, at which point they'll mutate further, endlessly, or perhaps be discarded for a while.

Despite what you might have heard or presumed, my quest is to spread light and joy through the world. My friends in Swans are all stellar men. Without them I'm a kitten, an infant. Our goal is the same: ecstasy! -Michael Gira

    A NOTE FROM MICHAEL GIRA:

    Hello There,

We (Swans) have recently completed our new album. It is called To Be Kind.

The album was produced by me, and it was recorded by the venerable John Congleton at Sonic Ranch, outside El Paso Texas, and further recordings and mixing were accomplished at John's studio in Dallas, Texas. We commenced rehearsals as Sonic Ranch in early October 2013, began recording soon thereafter, then completed the process of mixing with John in Dallas by mid December 2013.

A good portion of the material for this album was developed live during the Swans tours of 2012/13. Much of the music was otherwise conjured in the studio environment.

    The Great Annihilator (Awaiting Repress)

    2017 Remastered 2LP

The Swans are a study in metamorphoses. In 1983, when Melody Maker magazine dubbed the NYC noise mavens a deeply repulsive form of audio pornography, it was more a compliment than a slam. Cacophonous, confrontational, and unrelentingly loud, the band used vocal rants and bone-crunching distortion to achieve unparalleled levels of sonic pain.

Then, around '87 or so, rock's ugliest ducking found its inner Swan and blossomed into a vehicle for sweeping, complex arrangements of keyboards, strings and evocative sound effects. Vocalist Michael Gira traded his guttural growl for the croon of a balladeer, and the latter-day Swans were born.

Their 12th album, The Great Annihilator, is a majestic symphony of haunting melodies and shifting moods. Spirituality - or rather the absence of it - provides the linking motif. With a kinetic industrial goose step, She Lives! plays with chanted images of madness and martyrdom, while the jagged coda of Celebrity Lifestyle lays the groundwork for a cutting look at material dreams: She's just a drug addiction/ And a self-reflecting image of a narcoticized mind. Warm forms the album's thematic center, overflowing with ethereal vocal loops and drums that patter like raindrops accross the lyrical landscape. On Mother/Father and the mantric My Buried Child, vocalist Jarboe outdoes herself with a spectrum of darkly distinctive voices.

Taken on its own, this album is a vivid example of how to combine the dissonant with the dulcet while retaining a dangerous edge. Viewed in the context of the Swans' 12-year journey from audio pornography to majestic romanticism, The Great Annihilator serves as an epic apotheosis.

Even though Trompe le Monde (French for 'fool the world') doesn't sound quite like the Pixies' other work, Come on Pilgrim's spooky beginnings, Surfer Rosa's abrasive assault, Doolittle's deceptively accessible punk-pop and Bossanova's spacy sonics helped make Trompe le Monde a rousing swan song for the influential legends and it was a precursor to alternative rock's imminent success. First Authorized Vinyl Edition Of 1983 Debut Studio Album In 25 Years

    Re-Mastered With Original Cover Art

"This is all slabs of sound, rhythm and screaming/testifying. What more do you need? In a way, it was a reaction against Punk (and just about any other music you can think of), and the conservative notion that 3 chords were somehow necessary. I used to deny it vehemently at the time, but No Wave (I "hated" that scene too, for some reason I can't remember now) played a big role as the germ from which this music grew, along with The Stooges and Throbbing Gristle, of course. I wanted Swans to be "heavier" though - I wanted the music to obliterate - why, I don't remember! I think it just felt good. Live, we used two basses (playing utterly unmusical chords that were stabbed and left to sustain or sometimes hit in staccato or opposing rhythms), drums, a "percussionist" that slammed down on a metal table with a metal strap, crude cassette loops of various sounds/noises (usually some kind of undefined ROAR), and Norman Westberg's glorious sustained and screaming guitar chords. It was pretty elating to play live - for us. If 100 people showed up (which would have been a huge audience at the time - 20 was more the average), 80 were guaranteed to leave by the second song. Somehow that tension - contempt or indifference from the audience - was nourishing, so we kept going.

Here's some music I was listening to at the time: Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV, The Stooges, Brian Eno, Teenage Jesus And The Jerks, DNA, The Contortions, Glenn Branca, Black Flag, early Pink Floyd, This Heat, Kraftwerk, The Germs, Cabaret Voltaire, Can, Public Image LTD., SPK "

    Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake

Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, with its story of magical transformations, love and deceit and its irresistibly melodic score, defines Romantic ballet. It is no coincidence that conductor AndrÉ Previn has described himself as "a complete romantic" and that this recording has become a classic of the catalogue. When it was made in 1976, Previn had spent the best part of a decade as Principal Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. With their combination of show business flair and deep sensitivity, he and the LSO's players proved to be the ideal team for Tchaikovsky's glorious ballet music.

    Flow Motion

Out Of Print For Over 30 Years

Can was founded in 1968 by Irmin Schmidt, Holger
Czukay, Michael Karoli and Jaki Liebezeit who formed
a group which would utilize and transcend all boundaries of
ethnic, electronic experimental and modern classical music.

Flow Motion is the eighth Can studio album. It features the
UK hit single "I Want More". The success of "I Want More"
led to an appearance on Top of the Pops. Flow Motion
was mixed using binaural stereo, a method of recording
sound that uses two microphones, arranged with the intent
to create a 3-D stereo sound sensation for the listener of
actually being in the room with the performers or instruments.

The band's powerful influence has never diminished, and
their indelible mark is apparent in the bands who freely
acknowledge their importance - from Portishead, James
Murphy, New Order, Factory Floor, Public Image Ltd,
Mogwai, Kanye West (who sampled 'Sing Swan Song') and
Radiohead - as well as across other disciplines such as visual

    The Wild Swan

The Wild Swan was recorded in Nashville at Blackbird Studios with Grammy Award-winner Jacquire King. Recording legend Elton John is the album's Executive Producer.

The Wild Swan opens with Noam Chomsky Is A Soft Revolution, a rock'n'blues celebration of a roll-call of musical, philosophical, literary and polemical insurrectionists. It ends with a dash of uillean pipes and The Wild Swans On The Lake, a stop-you-in-your-tracks breath of Celtic balladry inspired by WB Yeats' The Wild Swans At Coole. Vance's rich voice also gets up close and personal on the hymnal Burden, then digs deep for She Burns, a song and a performance evocative of Bruce Springsteen's Tunnel Of Love. On the ancient-but-modern Be Like You Belong, Vance's soulful rasp weaves through pedal-steel and simple piano chords. Ziggy Looked Me In The Eye is a piano-based, strings-buoyed soul-stirrer, a dignified tribute to, says Vance, various people who I think have been part of a revolution. I'm not talking about Che Guevara or Ghandi or even Russell Brand for that matter - I'm talking about personal revolution. I like that idea constantly revolting against your own parameters.

Black Swan is a 2010 American psychological thriller film directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Natalie Portman, Vincent Cassel, Mila Kunis and Winona Ryder. The plot revolves around a production of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake ballet by a prestigious New York City company. Usually described as a psychological thriller, Black Swan can be also interpreted as a metaphor for achieving artistic perfection, with all the psychological and physical challenges one might encounter.

The original score for the film was composed by Clint Mansell, an English musician, composer, and former lead singer of the band Pop Will Eat Itself. Mansell was introduced to film scoring when director Darren Aronofsky hired him to score his debut film, Pi. Ever since Mansell wrote the score for many of Aronofsky's films. Notable film scores include Pi, The Fountain, Moon, Smokin' Aces, Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler, Doom, Black Swan, and High-Rise.

In 2008, Hollywood Undead's explosive, platinum-selling debut album Swan Songs rose from the streets of Tinseltown, delivering a raw, edgy mix of rock, hip-hop, and metalcore. Now, Interscope/UMe celebrates Swan Songs' tenth anniversary with the album's first-ever vinyl release, in a specially packaged, two-LP edition.

The 14-song album encapsulates the brash, rebellious attitude that's kept Hollywood Undead going ever since. The album reached No. 22 on the Billboard Top 200, spending more than a year and a half on the album chart.

    Navigated Like The Swan

Young Moon aka Trevor Montgomery is a craftsman. By day he's a skilled tile setter, a job taxing to both the mind and body. By night he's an equally meticulous and hard working musician, coaxing just the right tones out of his vintage drum machines and synths to carry his tales of love and redemption. As a tile setter and as a musician, his job is the same: assembling things of beauty to fill empty spaces. It's those exact skills that are employed to great effect on this 13-song collection entitled Navigated Like The Swan.

The crunching, smack-in-your-face power chords driving hard rock's thundering heart can be traced directly back to Link Wray.

His pulverizing sound forged a new path for rock 'n' roll guitar, and he was never more
lethal than during his 1963-1967 tenure at Philadelphia-based Swan Records.

Link unleashed some of the nastiest licks of his phenomenal recording career on the mighty Swan seven-inchers, all of which are corralled on this Sundazed double 180gm gatefold edition, in crunchily accurate sound courtesy of the original mono master tapes!

Tchaikovsky - Swan Lake (Speakers Corner)

Here is a true delight for all ballet fans and music-lovers. This recording of what is probably Tchaikovsky's most popular ballet, Swan Lake, by Ernest Ansermet and his orchestra in a masterly performance is now available as a new pressing in vinyl. The Russian composer's first ballet is offered here on a double LP and although not a complete recording, this compilation (with a minimum of cuts) certainly comprises the most beautiful and expressive scenes, losing nothing in the process.

"Ballet specialist" Ansermet and his wonderfully balanced Orchestre de la Suisse Romande offer here a recording which you'll want to hear again and again for it captures both the tragic moments of the fairy tale and the festive dance scenes. The precise winds in, for example No. 4, provide a marked contrast to the lively and exciting tutti (No. 5), while the gentle woodwinds blend charmingly with the dreamlike cantilena of the strings (No. 11). The various characteristics of the festive national dances (Polkas, Mazurkas, Hungarian Dance etc.) are performed with temperament, verve and rhythm, but it is the waltzes with their sweet dreaminess which invite the listener most of all to put on their dancing shoes and join in the dance.

    Musicians:

    • Orchestre de la Suisse Romande

    • Ernest Ansermet (conductor)

Recording: October/November 1958 at Victoria Hall, Geneva by Roy Wallace
    Production: James Walker

    Format: 2LPs 33rpm / gatefold sleeve, booklet

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

A Glimpse Inside The Mind Of Charles Swan III: Music From The Motion Picture

A Glimpse Inside The Mind Of Charles Swan III features a score by Liam Hayes, who has made music under the name Plush since the early 90's. Liam was contacted by Coppola after the director became a huge fan. I just got so absorbed by his music, Coppola recently told GQ. The resulting affinity between director and musician has produced a highly imaginative, atmospheric, cinematic score.

All My Favorite Singers Are Willie Nelson

Astral Swan's All My Favorite Singers Are Willie Nelson is a collection of stark psychedelic folk from the unfiltered neuroses of Calgary's Matthew Swann. Songs steeped in universal anguish, marveling at the world's knack for enterprise and cannibalism, come across instead as subtle, reassuring lullabies. These are quiet, relatable anthems for the outsider set, balancing gentle melodies on Swann's self-obsession with moral fallibility. On first single "Beginning Of The End", Swann delves into the album's various drug states in his sweetly apprehensive tone, a lowly guitar dancing loosely with intoxicated children, asking: "Who told the kids in the yard that they're mostly dust? Now they just stay drunk. Keep getting more fucked up".

Equally inspired by serene 60's folk, 80's no-wave alienation, and the insouciance of 90's grunge, Astral Swans' music is spacious yet constrained, hauntingly personal and oddly sincere. The skeletal "Let Their Faces All Blur Out" races softly with the punk rock abandon of early Sonic Youth and Eric's Trip; "What Calms You Down, Freaks Me Out" bears the ominous pleasance of Syd Barrett, Arthur Russell, Nick Drake, and fellow Calgarian Chad VanGaalen. More structured than Swann's Extra Happy Ghost!!! project (produced by VanGaalen), this album's experimental spirit denies the haphazard "singer-songwriter" label that some might attach to Astral Swans.

Set for release on Dan Mangan's Madic Records, these twelve songs lavish in Swann's startlingly sardonic reflections, in his own words, "confronting our strange ways of experiencing personhood, in the moral gorge between ideals and inadequacies". Tracked live in Swann's living room, and later embellished in an old Calgary warehouse with local experimental/improv mainstay Brad Hawkins (Ghostkeeper), All My Favorite Singers Are Willie Nelson is flawed if not for its air of accidental perfection, normalizing existential struggle with rhythm and harmony, a natural marriage of the sweet to the acrid.

    Enemy Mine

Swan Lake is the musical collaboration of Daniel Bejar (Destroyer, New Pornographers), Spencer Krug (Sunset Rubdown, Wolf Parade), and Carey Mercer (Frog Eyes, Blackout Beach). While their debut was a beautifully weaved mash up of disparate songwriting styles, this second effort reflects a more stripped down, deliberate approach to collaboration. It's as if they really tried to just make nice songs together. LP contains digital download coupon.

    Mardi Gras

Released in April 1972, Mardi Gras marked CCR's farewell as a musical entity after 5 enormously successful years. Yet this album, as its title suggests, is more a celebration than a swan song. With the departure of guitarist Tom Fogerty a year previously, the group worked closely as a trio, sharing writing, singing, and production duties.
