Everyone loves a party, so most people love a party band. That's why SoCal's Blink-182 have enjoyed a relatively long life in the ephemeral world of punk rock: They know how to make being pissed off sound as inviting as the pop of a beer-can tab. Bassist-vocalist Mark Hoppus, guitarist-vocalist Tom Delonge, and drummer Travis Barker have a swell time on their third album, singing about sexual frustration (Dumpweed), alienation (the power-pop-y All the Small Things) and the sucky, suicidal state of the world (the piano-laced Adam's Song). The minimalist rat-a-tat-tat rhythms never falter; the guitar boings up and down like a sonic Superball. It's all harmless but still gnarly enough to foment the kind of anti-everything rebellion that spawned rock & roll way back in the day. Sometimes feeling good doesn't demand more than a sense of collective ennui or a bouquet of clumsy words/A simple melody (Going Away to College). Blink-182 have the formula down, and for that, if nothing else, more power to 'em.

    The Swell Season

The Swell Seasons self-titled debut record is finally available on LP for the first time. The band has went on to wider success through their work in the Academy Award winning film, Once and have since issued both a soundtrack and a second record on Anti Records. However, this was the quiet debut release that started it all, recorded shortly prior to the filming of the movie.

At the time Glen Hansard of The Frames had recently teamed up with classically trained Czech vocalist and pianist, Marketa Irglova to write a handful of affecting songs and compositions for their friend and filmmaker, John Carney. Some of these songs would go onto make the film, Once while others didnt. The two choose to issue this record on CD and digitally shortly after thinking it unlikely that there would ever be an actual soundtrack or distribution of the film they had just completed. Of course this could not have been further from what ultimately happened.

Listening back through The Swell Season in comparison to Frames records, the songs on Once or their recent record, Strict Joy one cant help but be struck by just how intimate the whole affair feels. Recorded in a small studio in the Czech Republic with a limited budget the two are joined only by two other string players giving the songs a sense of space and isolation. A feeling that works particularly well for this batch of songs and in particular a vinyl record.

The record stands on its own as a complete piece on par with some of the more personal musical statements of the last few years. The Swell Season was released prior to the Once soundtrack. When it came time to put the soundtrack together the band rerecorded four of the songs for the soundtrack. The other six songs are specific to this release and not available elsewhere.

Noisy and experimental, Britain's Swell Maps experienced little commercial success during the course of their chaotic career, but in hindsight they stand as one of the pivotal acts of the new wave: not only was the group an acknowledged inspiration to the likes of Sonic Youth and Pavement, but their alumni - most notably brothers Nikki Sudden and Epic Soundtracks - continued on as key players in the underground music community.

    Ulysses (Awaiting Repress)

Includes Two Unreleased Tracks Not Available Anywhere Else

Victoria, B.C.'s Current Swell is set to release their new album, Ulysses, on May 6, 2014. The 12-tracks
on Ulysses perfectly deliver the band's textured, deep-groove sound while capturing the energy of their live
show, which has earned them scores of fans across The Americas, Australia and Europe. The band will
debut many of these new songs next month in Austin during SXSW.

Ulysses was produced by Nathan Sabatino (Dr. Dog, Neko Case, Giant Sand) at Vancouver's iconic
Greenhouse Studios. The album captures every bit of warmth the studio's massive Neve console could
provide, as heard on "Rollin'" (a showcase for Stanton's exemplary slide work), the title track "Ulysses,"
rocker "Keys to the Kingdom" and the readymade sing-along "One Day I'll Be Rich."
While Current Swell spent the better part of six months recording their previous album (and Nettwerk
debut), 2012's Long Time Ago, the four band members entered the studio with a clear goal and knocked
    Ulysses out in 20 days.

From appearances at key festivals from Australia to Canada (Byron Bay Bluesfest, Peats Ridge, Rock
The Shores, Ottawa Bluesfest and more), to sold-out headline tours of Brazil, to support slots with such
established artists as Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros, Dispatch, Xavier Rudd, K'Naan, The
Tragically Hip and even The Beach Boys, Current Swell's infectious sound and raucous live shows have
earned the quartet scores of devoted fans around the word. In 2011, Current Swell earned first place at
Vancouver's Peak Performance Project and headlined a Canada Day concert to a crowd of 45,000.

    A Trip To Marineville

Brothers Nikki Sudden and Epic Soundtracks started the Swell Maps in the early 1970s while in their teens. The band's chaotic mix of arty experimentalism, garage primitivism, and punk rock gumption established a template for the British DIY post-punk movement of the late '70s and early '80s. The band's 1979 debut, A TRIP TO MARINEVILLE, perfectly captures the band's two disparate yet strangely compatible elements. Songs such as Spitfire Parade, Another Song, and the rousing opener H.S. Art burn with youthful abandon and a glammy, knowingly primitive cool. Yet by Don't Throw Ashtrays at Me and Bridge Head, the listener is presented with an almost completely different band, as improvised noise, clattering percussion, found sounds, and ambient piano soundscapes overtake the more straightforward rock elements that introduced the album. The hypnotic pulse of Krautrock creeps in on Full Moon in My Pocket and BLAM!! and the Sonic Youth blueprint is presented fully formed on Gunboat. For the Swell Maps, the call to arms of punk rock wasn't about empty gestures toward anarchy and social rebellion, but rather the notion of a personal revolution via the limitless possibilities of art. A Trip To Marineville perfectly captures this realization.

Women's self-titled debut touches upon Velvet Underground, Swell Maps and This Heat while not really having any obvious precursors. The highly anticipated debut from London's Savages, an all-female four-piece who play music with scything energy and brutal power. Recorded with Rodaidh McDonald (The xx), the album is an 11-track, 38-minute masterpiece. Limned in black and white but containing a swell of different emotions within its self-imposed strictures, the songs cover topics from masochism (Hit Me), urban dread (City's Full), materialism, possessivenes and the experience of being a woman (Husbands, I Am Here). Dark Skies OST

The film "Dark Skies" is a world where the threat is not supernatural but alien in context. This powerful new score by Joseph Bishara, composer of "Insidious" and "The Conjuring" (in theaters this summer) sonically blends horror sensibilities with tense science fiction overtones as waves of static rise and swell to silent stops, unrecognizable sound manipulations soar while strings, winds, and crystal bowls hold open a reality that suggests the terrifying is also staggeringly fascinating.

The Magic Place is the third record from Julianna Barwick, and the first to be released by Asthmatic Kitty. This nine piece, 43 minute album is a cinematic journey through glacial pacing and drifting drones. The occasional icy down-plink of piano, Julianna's gorgeous churchhouse sigh of a voice, a swell of a dozen voices rising in harmony - this is music from the inside of the fortress of solitude, the work of a solitary creator, a message from a crystal palace of reverb and avant-choral bliss.

    Texas

In a year when overproduced rock-fluff flooded radio
waves, Texas-Sudden's 1986 solo debut for Creation-
blasted through the saccharin for a damaged and masterful
invocation at the imperfect alters of Chilton and Bolan,
sonic influences the Brit bore proudly on his velvet sleeve
throughout the course of his polarizing prolificacy. As the
increasingly splintered Rolling Stones cultivated "Harlem
Shuffle" cover cheese, the former Jacobite leader looked
to the ragged Exile On Main St. and Sticky Fingers roots
of his icons for a raw, 12-song predication melding tender
jangle and staggering swagger. Widely considered Sudden's
solo magnum opus, Texas is an exquisite mÉlange of the
    off-kilter sub-terrestrial songwriter.

In founding Swell Maps, the post-punk prefacing
Birmingham art-snots, Nikki Sudden and his drumming
brother Epic Soundtracks charted new territory for racket
and corrosive guitar. But after folding Swell Maps at the
dawn of the '80s, Nikki Sudden plowed through another
decade's worth of terrifically fertile ground. Drawing on
his devotion to the Rolling Stones and T. Rex-alongside
guitarist Dave Kusworth as Jacobites, plus a cheekily named
cohort of British sidemen-Nikki Sudden cut a string of
raw, inspired rock 'n' roll records, etched with double-edged travel melancholia and hard-bitten punk dejection.

Nikki Sudden's collaboration with former Birthday
Party guitarist Rowland S. Howard peaked with Kiss You
Kidnapped Charabanc, the duo's 1987 first and only full
length. Howard's sinister guitar flourishes and malevolent
lyrical motifs lead Sudden's paisley-clad disposition into
murkier waters, drudging the same sludge inhabited by
The Gun Club and Nick Cave's Bad Seeds. Unhinged slide
guitars, noise and primal drumming draw up demented
pacts forged in the blood of Southern Gothic swamp
stomp and Depression-era devotionals-tales of lovers and
demons split between the vocal transmissions of the two
minds behind this goth-steeped, blues-punk essential.

    Dead Men Tell No Tales

Dead Men Tell No Tales takes a stripped-down turn with plaintive lyrical confessions as pretty as they are prescient, summoning Syd Barrett?s wild spirit through a seance of simple reverb burbles and acoustic incantations. Front-and-center vocals recounting love, loss and death's lurking presence are presented against airy guitar shimmer in a demented yin and yang seemingly forecasting the scarf-swathed, underground dandy man's abrupt fall nearly 20 years later. In the midst of such weighty tomes are less downtrodden peeks into the studio, where Sudden and his Jacobites are caught on tape in a few joyful fits and starts, adding another complex layer to this celebrated post-punk. In founding Swell Maps, the post-punk prefacing Birmingham art-snots, Nikki Sudden and his drumming brother Epic Soundtracks charted new territory for racket and corrosive guitar. How We Lost

How We Lost is actually a celebratory album. It's a reflective record and, in its own way, celebrates the Windsor For The Derby continuum that's been culled from their first release, Calm Hades Float in 1996 to their last, Giving Up the Ghost from 2005. Each of these recordings is a sequel to the next both musically and in narrative, especially since the band found themselves in constant dialogue about their body of work and the paths they'
d chosen due to the rerelease of their first two records Calm Hades Float and Minnie Greutzfeldt. Also a part of that ongoing dialogue were the records that the band found itself consistently re-visiting, Swell Maps, Section 25, Psychic TV and what it was that made those recordings timeless and resonate in a personal way to the band. The songs on How We Lost is about the ways they've changed over the years, the things they hold onto and what's been left behind.

    2018 Remastered Version

In many ways, Please brought Euro-techno into the unsuspecting homes of millions like no other album before. This time, the boys--in this case the Pet Shop Boys--were doin' it for themselves. I Want a Lover and Tonight Is Forever are songs by boys for boys about boys that snuck past so many because of the genderless (for the most part) objects of affection in the lyrics. Please announces with every synthesizer swell layered over electronic beats, that the boys came to dance and they could complain about their love lives while they were at it. There is also a snide swat or two at the socioeconomic state of things (Opportunities), but the Pet Shop Boys' debut will always be most remembered for Neil Tennant's Al Stewart-like vocals in West End Girls. -Steve Gdula

Depending on whom you ask, Jack 'Oblivian' Yarber is either a rock legend or an obsolute unknown. And no one knows this dichotomy better than Yarber, who may be Memphis' most infuential active rock musician.

The list of noteworthy bands Yarber has been a member of over the years is massive and includes Johnny Vomit & the Dry Heaves, new-wavers the End, '68 Comeback, Knaughty Knights, and Tav Falco's Panther Burns. Two of Yarber's former bands, the Compulsive Gamblers and the Oblivians, have seen their reputation and following swell in the decade since their demise, especially the Oblivians, whose international fan base borders on rabid. Due largely to his stint in these bands, both partnerships with Greg Cartwrigth, now of Reigning Sound, Yarber has been an acknowledged influence on artists such as the White Stripes, the Hives, and Jay Reatard.

In the years since, Yarber has toured and released a string of successful solo albums under the Jack O & the Tennessee Tearjerkers moniker. Originally conceived in 2000 as a partnership with former Impala and current Bo-Keys bassist Scott Bomar, the band quickly morphed into Yarber's solo incarnation after Bomar became occupied with film scoring and production work. The band has had a revolving door for side players ever since, at different times including current River City Tanlines John Bonds and Terrence Bishop, Neighborhood Texture Jam guitarist John Wittmore, the Reigning Sound's Greg Roberson, Bluff City Backslider Adam Woodard, and a host of other recognizable local musicians.

    Libraries

Among the moments captured on Libraries are Spectoresque walls of reckless sound, cavernous drums, middle-school percussion, and moody swells of stringed instruments, all decorated hastily with stray leads, which bleed beautifully all over everything. Super-solid chug-along pop songs performed with an almost startling precision on all members' parts. ~ TIME OUT NEW YORK on The Love Language 2009 CMJ performance

    Songs Of Patience

The title of Alberta Cross' new studio album, Songs of Patience is, in many ways, literal. It's been three long years since the band last released a full-length album. The highs and lows of their journey raised a grander set of ideas, infusing the 10-song set's title with additional universal meaning.

After touring extensively on their debut, Broken Side of Time, with bands like Them Crooked Vultures, Oasis, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and stopping at festivals like Bonnaroo and Sasquatch, Alberta Cross headed to an old, abandoned house in the middle of nowhere near Woodstock, NY. There, they braved the freezing winter and embraced a sense of the building's haunted past to envision ideas for a new records.

In the end, the record is the sum of three years' worth of parts, a struggle that concluded in victory. Three difference producers: Joe Chiccarelli (The White Stripes, My Morning Jacket), Mike Daly (Whiskeytown, Young the Giant) and Claudius Mittendorfer (Muse, Interpol). It opens new possibilities for the band's visceral live show, a notable facet of the group defined by their raucous, gritty onstage performances that swell the tracks into bigger, more expansive versions of themselves. Song of Patience has also, in many ways, become a decided source of inspiration for the band members, one they hope magnifies the personal battles and upsides of their fans.

    Didn't He Ramble

Didn't He Ramble, the second solo outing from acclaimed singer songwriter Glen Hansard, will be released September 18 via Anti- Records. The new album is his first in over three years and follows 2012's solo debut Rhythm & Repose, which Billboard hailed as "Hansard at his most engaging." Didn't He Ramble was produced by Thomas Bartlett (The National, Sufjan Stevens), a frequent collaborator of Hansard's, and Grammy winner and former Frames band-mate David Odlum (Paloma Faith, Tinariwen). The album, which was recorded in New York, Dublin, Chicago and France, is Hansard's most intimate and elegant record since his work in Once and features guest appearances by John Sheahan (Dubliners), Sam Beam (Iron and Wine) and Sam Amidon. Glen Hansard is the celebrated principal songwriter and vocalist/guitarist for the influential Irish group The Frames. Whether busking the streets of Dublin, where he got his start, or headlining a gig, Hansard has garnered a reputation as an unparalleled frontman. Hansard is also one half of the acclaimed duo The Swell Season. In 2007, he and Czech songstress MarkÉta Irglová took home the Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Falling Slowly" off the Once soundtrack. In 2013,the Broadway adaptation, Once The Musical, won eight Tony Awards including the top musical prize. Most recently, Hansard has won critical acclaim for his moving interpretations of the songs of Jason Molina of Songs:Ohia.

    Loving Vincent (Original Soundtrack Album)

    Pressed On 180-Gram Yellow Vinyl

Housed In Packaging Designed By Director Dorota Kobiela

"Loving Vincent" is the upcoming biographical animated film from newcomer directors Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman. The movie follows Armand Roulin (Douglas Booth), the son of an acquaintance of Vincent van Gogh, as he attempts to deliver a letter from the painter following van Gogh's death. Armand soon finds himself retracing the steps taken by Vincent in his final days in an attempt to unravel the mysterious circumstances surrounding his death. A film unlike any other, "Loving Vincent" is entirely hand painted - each of the movie's 65,000 frames is an oil painting on a canvas created using the same techniques as Vincent van Gogh.

In addition to being a wonder for the eyes, "Loving Vincent" is a treat for the ears. Scoring duties fell to English composer Clint Mansell (Requiem For A Dream, Black Swan), who has crafted a masterpiece. Somber yet driven, Mansell's compositions are filled the swell of mournful strings pocked with delicate, deliberate notes in countermelodies. A perfect companion to the story of dreadful loss and resigned understanding, "Loving Vincent" demands to be heard. A beautiful rendition of "Starry Starry Night" performed by Lianne La Havas that serves as the film's credit song is also included.

    Accident Of Birth

Barely a year later after his
    third album, Bruce released
    his fourth solo album.
This time, heavy metal in its most bombastic and
destructive sense was firmly back on the agenda.
Once again teaming up with Roy Z, Bruce has rarely
sounded more powerful than he does on this unsung
'90s metal gem. With the added bonus of a certain
Adrian Smith chipping in on lead guitar, Accident Of
Birth was a flat-out celebration of heavy metal, both
past and present, with a sound that was as crushing
and timely as anything the younger generation were
producing, and songs that soared with the same
ageless majesty that fans had long associated with
the Dickinson voice. From the rampaging riff-riot
of opener "Freak" and the shadowy melodrama of
"Taking The Queen," to the insanely catchy twin-lead
euphoria of "Road To Hell" and the labyrinthine
swell of "Omega," Accident Of Birth was much more
than a return to metal's unsullied essence; this was
a reclaiming of the throne from the genre's most
    unstoppable protagonist.

    Saturday Night Part 2

Depending on whom you ask, Jack 'Oblivian' Yarber is either a rock legend or an absolute unknown. This dichotomy is well-understood by Memphis musicians, as underground fame for all its rewards, has, with a few exceptions, been the ceiling for local acts for decades. And no one knows this dichotomy better than Yarber, who may be Memphis' most influential active rock musician.

The list of noteworthy bands Yarber has been a member of over the years is massive and includes Johnny Vomit & the Dry Heaves, new wavers the End, '68 Comeback, Knaughty Knights, and Tav Falco's Panther Burns. Two of Yarber's former bands, the Compulsiver Gamblers and the Oblivians, have seen their reputation and following swell in the decade since their demise, especially the Oblivians, whose international fan base borders on rabid.

In the years since, Yarber has toured and released a string of successful solo albums under the Jack O & the Tennessee Tearjerkers moniker. Originally conceived in 2000 as a partnership with former Impala and current Bo-Keys bassist Scott Bomar, the band quickly morphed into Yarber's solo incarnation after Bomar became too occupied with film scoring and production work. The band has had a revolving door for side players ever since, at different times including current River City Tanlines John Bonds and Terrance Bishop, Neighborhood Texture Jam guitarist John Whittemore, the Reigning Sound's Greg Roberson, Bluff City Backslider Adam Woodard, and a host of other recognizable local musicians.
