    Undead

A Premium RTI Pressing, From The Original U.K. Mono Masters

Immortalized on the silver screen, Ten Years After's landmark performance of "I'm Going Home" at Woodstock galvanized their reputation as road warriors capable of rousing large crowds - such as the 400,000 festival-goers mesmerized by Alvin Lee's white lightning on his bright red Gibson ES-335."I'm Going Home" could also light up a room as small as Klooks Kleek in London, as heard on their second album, 1968's Undead. But while it was the first recording of the song (with wires running from Decca Studios next door to capture it), it hardly came from nowhere. Alvin Lee and bassist Leo Lyons learned the value of extended jamming as far back as 1962 while playing Hamburg in the Jaybirds, and not long after they began covering Gene Vincent's "I'm Going Home (To See My Baby)" in Ten Years After - it was reworked into something entirely original. Or more specifically: stripped down, repainted, rebuilt and retooled into a drag racer that would scorch crowds for years to come. Undead was the first recorded evidence of that live legacy. Condensed to the best five of the May 14, 1968, set, the album sees the band do further long bluesy jamming with "I May Be Wrong, But I Won't Be Wrong Always," "Spider in My Web," and pound Gershwin into submission (courtesy drummer Ric Lee) on "Summertime/Shantung Cabbage." And on a killer cover of "(At the) Woodchopper's Ball," the band's jazzy blues is hot enough to turn Woody Herman's classic into sawdust - replete with Alvin Lee and organist Chick Churchill trading solos. Rightly regarded as one of the best live albums of its era, Undead is reissued here in its rare mono mix, which has been out of print everywhere for nearly 50 years. It's very much alive on this vinyl edition, which features primo sound and the beautiful negative-image original cover.

Now Sundazed proudly presents the searing guitar of Alvin Lee & Chick Churchill's haunting organ textures as they were meant to be heard, from the original U.K. MONO masters and pressed on premium RTI vinyl!

As Recorded At Madison Square Garden (Music On Vinyl)

The live album 'As Recorded at Madison Square Garden' was originally released in June 1972, just one week after the concert took place at the Madison Square Garden arena in New York City. This show was Presley's first live concert in the Big Apple since the 1950s. Many musicians attended one of his shows most notably amongst them George Harrison, Art Garfunkel, David Bowie, all the members of both Ten Years After and Led Zeppelin, Paul Simon and Bob Dylan. Being backed by an eight-piece band, an orchestra and eight backup singers the show itself is the more elaborately produced follow-up to his Las Vegas performances of 1969-1970.

After landing a total of ten #1 hits, moving over 20 million records worldwide, and selling out shows everywhere with a stage, Collective Soul-Ed Roland [vocals, guitars, keyboards], Dean Roland [guitars], Will Turpin [bass], Jesse Triplett [guitars], and Johnny Rabb [drums]-staunchly and proudly remain a rock 'n' roll band through and through. Nowhere is that reassuring fact more apparent than on the first proper live album of the group's 25-year career, LIVE.

Fittingly, they introduce the collection with a live piano rendition of their biggest hit 1993's "Shine"-which would be crowned #1 Album Rock Song of 1994, win a Billboard award for "Top Rock Track," land on VH1's "100 Greatest Songs of the '90s," and notch Dolly Parton a GRAMMY® Award for "Best Vocal Performance" on her 2001 cover. Preserving the soulful spark that established them as the "Southern Gentlemen of the Alternative Rock Scene," Collective Soul build upon a formidable foundation. They were inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2009. To date, they average over 1 million Spotify streams a month. From a classic performance at Woodstock 1994 to a notable placement on the Twilight soundtrack, their influence continues to course through generations of pop culture.

Shudder To Think continues to be as important and other-worldly today as they were when they released their first independent single, 'It Was Arson' in 1988. In 1994 Shudder To Think signed to Epic Records and released their opus Pony Express Record, an album still considered one of the most groundbreaking and influential albums of our time. In the fall of 2008, ten years after the band's break-up, Shudder To Think reunited in response to overwhelming requests. Live At The Fillmore

Previously Unreleased Live Album Recorded In 1968 At The Legendary Fillmore East

Sly & The Family Stone-Live At The Fillmore East October 4th & 5th, 1968 is a never before released live album set by Sly & The Family Stone which was recorded in 1968 at Bill Graham's legendary New York City venue The Fillmore East where the band performed for 2 nights. It will at long last be released for the first time ever on a 4-CD set comprised of these concerts (two shows per night), each disc featuring one of the shows.

On October 4th and 5th, 1968, shortly after the release of the band's third album Life, Sly & The Family Stone took the stage at Bill Graham's legendary Fillmore East in New York City. Along with the success of Dance To The Music, which was released earlier that year and spun off the Top 10 hit of the same name, Sly & The Family Stone were making a name for themselves on the concert circuit, with their dynamic, high energy live performances.

Epic Records recorded all four of these concerts (two shows per night) with plans to release a live album that would consist of selections from these performances but the release was shelved until now.

    Live At Shea Stadium

Recorded at New Yorks Shea Stadium in 1982, Live at Shea Stadium captures The Clash at the peak of its powers and on devastating form. Bristling with energy and attitude, Live at Shea Stadium is destined to feature alongside James Brown at the Apollo, The Who at Leeds and Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison as one of the greatest live recordings of all time!

The Clash, opening for The Who on their farewell U.S. tour played two nights at the legendary Shea Stadium (12th & 13th Oct 1982). They had recently released the Combat Rock album, and the singles Rock The Casbah and Should I Stay Or Should I Go were enjoying mass audiences via MTV and radio airplay. Despite being the support act, the New York Post reported there were as many Clash fans on those nights as Who fans.

Recorded by Glyn Johns, the album features the second nights performance in its entirety and shows the band at a fascinating and pivotal point in their career. They had risen from punk agitators to arena superstars and would break up less than a year later. One of the few remaining unreleased Clash treasures, the recordings have long been sought after by fans and were unearthed by the late Joe Strummer while packing for a move. This is a legendary Clash concert. More than an album, its an event.

    First Time On Vinyl

After a sabbatical period resting in a Buddhist monastery, Leonard Cohen was prompted to tour again as in his absence his former manager embezzled his savings. If one expected Cohen not to amaze crowds regardless of the reason he was on stage, or his absence from the stage for almost 15 years, one couldn't be more wrong.

Live In London (2009) contains some of the maestro's best work, 26 songs in all. Recorded at London's O2 Arena on July 17, 2008, Cohen mesmerized the audience of 20.000 with big, yet subtle renditions of classics like "Who by Fire", "Suzanne", "The Future" and "Democracy". Cohen sounds genuinely moved by the affectionate reception he receives from his audience, and he seems determined to give them a show to match their loyalty, and with his band (who he frequently lauds during the performance) he truly gives all.

    Long Live The Angels

Long Live The Angels is a mesmerizing journey through the triumphs and tragedies of the last four years of Emeli SandÉ's extraordinary life. Exultant in its delivery and bold in its intent, the record is steeped in an unreserved sense of freedom and self-discovery. It will be released on November 11 via Universal Music Canada, the country's leading music company.

It's from that feeling of freedom that new single "Hurts" was born, an uplifting track brimming with heart and soul. "This entire album is about me not holding back and not censoring myself, and 'Hurts' is an explosion, it's just real talk," explains SandÉ. A lot has happened to SandÉ in the four years since the resounding success of her critically acclaimed number one record, Our Version Of Events. Not only was it the biggest selling album of 2012 and second biggest selling album of 2013 in the UK, but it was also certified 7x platinum, spent seven non-consecutive weeks at No.1 and exceeded The Beatles' previous record by spending 63 consecutive weeks in the top 10 and selling over 4.6 million copies worldwide.

The multi-instrumentalist initially made her mark as a songwriter in the UK urban scene via acts such as Wiley, Wretch 32 and Chip, later becoming a highly sought-after writer for a wide array of international acts including Alicia Keys, Rihanna, and Katy Perry. As 2013 came to a close, SandÉ was exhausted and unable to ignore the strain it was putting on a number of close relationships, "Sounds a bit dramatic but I just wanted to disappear. I just had this overwhelming sensation and realization everything had to stop," she reflects, "And then slowly it did."

Recorded in New York, L.A, London, and Oxford, Long Live the Angels crackles with energy and a sense of euphoria for both listener and artist. Certain tracks may be slower in spirit, but are dynamic in delivery, "I made sure the production wasn't overworked," Emeli points out, "And I really went for it vocally!" SandÉ's outstanding voice sits at the heart of the record, underscoring the singer's mastery of both technique and form but also her natural intuition as a vocalist. Opening track "Selah", a short poem backed by a choral choir sets the tone, written solely by SandÉ during a time of reflection; it's a powerful and poignant introduction to the album.

Next up is the sensational "Breathing Underwater", which SandÉ describes as "the ultimate journey in rebirth and self-discovery." The super stripped back "Give Me Something" is a wondrous take on keeping the faith despite the odds being stacked against you, and the beautifully melodic Shakes is a piano and strings-led masterpiece. "Garden" harks back to SandÉ's urban roots, written and produced in London with Jay Electronica, who also features on the track. It's a reminder that Emeli's influences are as much R&B and rap as they are singer/songwriter. "Lonely" is a long hard look at love and has the feel of a track made on a summery late sixties afternoon. "Sweet Architect" (Johnny Coffer and Mojam) is the show-stopping centerpiece punctuated by the most remarkable choir.

Towards the close of Long Live the Angels, we witness a jubilant SandÉ experiencing the hopes of new possibilities; "Every Single Little Piece" is a stirring mid-tempo ballad, with a huge chorus and soul-stirring strings and the uplifting "Highs & Lows" is a dedication to her family, her history and her heritage.

Long Live The Angels marks a brand new chapter in SandÉ's life, "I'm proud of my first album and thankful for the experiences it gave me. But I'm so much happier with my new album and with where I am in life."

    Ben Folds Five - Live

ImAVeePee Records/Sony Music is proud to release Ben Folds Five Live, the
rst live album from piano-pop trio Ben Folds Five. Recorded in 2012 on their
rst tour in more than a decade, this new set - available on CD and doublevinyl - will be the perfect prelude to the band's spot on the Last Summer on
Earth Tour, which will see Ben Folds Five lling amphitheaters across America
    alongside Barenaked Ladies and Guster.

For longtime fans of Ben Folds' biting, piano-based power-pop songs, the
past two years have been full of excitement. In 2011, Folds reunited with
bassist Robert Sledge and drummer Darren Jessee to record the rst new
Ben Folds Five songs since 1999 for the career-spanning compilation The
Best Imitation Of Myself: A Retrospective. Inspired by the collaborative spark
after so many years apart, the trio reconvened in Folds' Nashville studio to
record their fourth studio album, The Sound Of The Life Of The Mind. The
album was an immediate hit, peaking within Billboard's Top 10 - the band's
    highest-charting release.

Ben Folds Five consistently thrills audiences with their high energy performances, and Ben Folds Five Live captures the band in top form across four
continents through 2012 and 2013. The band deliver powerful renditions of
their most beloved classics like "Jackson Cannery," "Brick" and "Song For The

Live From Austin, TX (Buck Owens)

Maybe it was an epiphany of sorts. As Buck tells it, One day I was watching Austin City Limits and Dwight Yoakam was on, then he dedicates the program to 'Buck Owens.' So I said, I'm going to see what this kid is like. It wasn't long after that he was on stage with Dwight singing his old hits. Buck was bitten by the bug to return to music, after calling it quits almost ten years earlier. This man from Sherman, Texas - probably best-known as the wide-grinning rube on Hee Haw for so many years - started a country music revolution. Or more accurately, a counter-revolution. It was called The Bakersfield Sound. He and fellow revolutionary Merle Haggard were cranking out raw, hard-driving honky-tonk music that stood the country-pop coming out of Nashville on its head. When Buck Owens and the Buckaroos would launch into I've got a tiger by the tail, it's plain to see....! the packed crowds would be on their feet and headed for the dance floor. Along the way Buck inspired none other than The Beatles to record their first country song, his classic Act Naturally, and the master of soul, Ray Charles, to immortalize one of the best-known country songs ever, Crying Time. Buck always loved his home state, and once flew to Austin on his private jet to make a surprise visit to a club that celebrated a Buck Owens Birthday night every year. He was also one of the few artists to ever write a handwritten note thanking us for inviting him on the show. Many thanks, he wrote, it is very representative of what I am all about. In my mind, Buck Owens will always be a rock star.

What It Is To Burn - X Live

    Formed in Temecula, CA
in 1999, the quintet of Nate
    Barcalow, Alex Linares, Randy
    Strohmeyer, Alex Pappas
    and Derrek Doherty known
as Finch, are labeled as the
    fore-fathers of the "screamo"
and post hardcore genre. Influenced by the hard leanings
    of bands like Deftones and
Hum, and the pop sensibilities of Jimmy Eat World and
    Blink-182, Finch began a sonic
    revolution in popular music
    that still echoes today.

    The band signed to Drive-Thru
Records in 2001 after guitarist Strohmeyer sent out a demo to owners Richard and Stephanie Reines while he was working on the label's street team.
Drive-Thru saw something in the Southern California band and decided
to take a risk on a sound that was more aggressive than their current range
of artists. Their first EP, Falling into Place sold more than 6,000 copies
within the first few months and gave them the momentum they needed to
create their groundbreaking first album What It Is To Burn. Recorded in
the winter of 2001, What It Is To Burn was released the following spring.
The album produced three radio hits, charted Number 1 on the Billboard
Heatseekers chart and 188 on the Billboard 200.

They spent years touring in support of What It Is To Burn, sharing
the stage with the likes of Glassjaw, The Starting Line, Yellowcard, and
Blink-182, among others. In 2005, they decided it was time for a follow up,
and went in a more artsy direction with Say Hello To Sunshine. Drummer
Alex Pappas left the band and was replaced by Marc Allen. After years of
heavy touring, the band went on a short hiatus, rejoining one another in
2007 with new bassist Daniel Wonacott to record their self-titled EP. Critics
hailed the EP as a return to glory while still adding to their old sound.
Finch would tour off the release for a few years until deciding on another
    break in 2009.

In 2013, Finch reunited to its nearly original lineup and announced that
they would embark on the What It Is To Burn Ten Year Anniversary
tour. The group performed the full-length in its entirety with a few extra
bonuses for fans along the way. One concert in particular in Pomona, CA
was filmed and recorded and will be released via Tragic Hero Records. With no bad blood and everything firing on all fronts, it's hard to
tell what will come next for Finch, but one thing remains certain: all eyes
    are watching to find out.

Live In San Diego (with Special Guest JJ Cale)

Eric Clapton's Live in San Diego With Special Guest JJ Cale is a live album from the 2007 tour featuring JJ Cale, Doyle Bramhall II, Robert Cray, Derek Trucks and more. Almost 2 hours of music including previously unreleased versions of Layla, Tell The Truth, Cocaine and Crossroads.

Recorded at Clapton's March 15, 2007 performance at the iPayOne Center in San Diego, CA, this concert was part of a world tour that was much loved by Clapton fans and featured a stellar band that included guitarists Derek Trucks (now of the Tedeschi Trucks band) and Doyle Bramhall II. The two-hour San Diego concert was a highlight of the tour as it featured JJ Cale as a special guest on five tracks (including "After Midnight" and "Cocaine"), as well as Robert Cray on the final song of the record, "Crossroads."

After successfully covering several JJ Cale songs over his career, Clapton finally collaborated with Cale in 2006 on the original album Road to Escondido. At the time, Clapton said "This is the realization of what may have been my last ambition, to work with the man whose music has inspired me for as long as I can remember." So it is fitting that one year later, Cale joined Clapton on stage for this special concert where they performed five songs together - underlining the mutual respect the two musicians had for each other.

The concert features a superb set list from across Eric's career. Notably, it includes songs from Eric's classic Derek and the Dominos album Layla, with Derek Trucks playing many of Duane Allman's original guitar parts.

Clapton's career, spanning more than 50 years, has resulted in 18 Grammy Awards and the distinct honor of being the only triple inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Paradise is There: The New Tigerlily Recordings

Natalie Merchant's career began when, as a college student, she joined the seminal alternative rock band 10,000 Maniacs. Serving as lead vocalist, lyricist, and sometime pianist, Merchant released five critically acclaimed studio albums with the band, including the platinum-selling In My Tribe (1987), Blind Man's Zoo (1989), Our Time in Eden (1992), and MTV Unplugged (1993). Merchant left the group in 1993, after 12 years, to record her first solo album. Tigerlily (1995) was certified five-times platinum, and was followed by the platinum Ophelia (1998), Natalie Merchant Live (1999), and Motherland (2001).

In 2010, Merchant returned with a thematic double album entitled Leave Your Sleep, her debut for Nonesuch Records. A meditation on childhood and mothering, the anthology comprised 19th and 20th century American and British classic children's poetry by the likes of Robert Louis Stevenson, Christina Rossetti, Robert Graves, Edward Lear, and E.E. Cummings that Merchant had set to music. The result was praised by critics on both sides of the Atlantic, with The Wall Street Journal calling it an ideal fit between poetic and musical forms, and the Independent, a hugely ambitious and beautifully realized double album.

Notes By Ric Lee Of Ten Years After

Undead is a live album by Ten Years After, recorded live at the small jazz club, Klooks Kleek, in London on May 14th 1968, The show combined Blues, Boogie and Jazz playing that merged more traditional Rock and Roll with 50s-style Jump Blues. Alvin Lee, Leo Lyons, Chick Churchill and Ric Lee together became one of the biggest club attractions in England. Their music knows no compromise - it's straight down the line. It's loud and tough - but honest. Undead captures the excitement and raw energy of the band's live performances.

When originally released in 1968, the album was only 38 minutes long, due to the timing constraints of vinyl. As the band's tunes were all pretty long, there were only five tracks on the original issue. The expanded edition of Undead contains 4 additional tracks of the performance and is available on vinyl for the very first time. The remastered audio is pressed on 180 gram audiophile vinyl and Side D is beautifully etched.

The Complete Village Vanguard Recordings, 1961

4 LP Box Set Pressed On 180 Gram Vinyl

    Includes 12 Page Booklet

Ranked time after time as one of the best live jazz recording sessions in history, and yielding two of Evans' most classic albums (Waltz for Debby, Sunday
at the Village Vanguard), The Complete Village Vanguard Recordings, 1961 represents the pinnacle of spontaneous musical communication: three men
breathing as one on a tiny bandstand.

This box set is the ultimate collectible item for any jazz fan. Pressed on 180-gram vinyl, this four-LP set comes with a 12-page booklet, complete with
new liner notes by reissue producer Bill Belmont, as well as the original liner notes by the producer of the original recordings,Orrin Keepnews.
Reproductions of session notes and photographer Steve Schapiro's proof sheets from the performances add vintage context to the packaging. Also
included in the box is a stunning metallic and black poster of the famous cover - Evans, in profile, deep in concentration at his piano.

Everything Bill Evans, Scott LaFaro, and Paul Motian had been working on for the previous 18 months led to this moment on June 25, 1961. The little-known pianist and his trio performed afternoon and evening sets that Sunday to a small audience that unknowingly sat through what would become a very
famous - and final - set by the trio as a whole. The 25-year old LeFaro died tragically in a car accident just ten days later. The performances on these
LPs demonstrate a new and more interactive approach to playing as a trio, one in which all instruments carry melodic responsibilities and function as
equal voices. Contrapuntal dialogues take place between Evans's poetic piano and LaFaro's bass, with Motian's sustained riveted ride cymbal providing a
carpet of stars. These recordings provide something of a sonic time capsule: sequenced in the original order of the five sets; the audience's murmurings
and applause peppered throughout; even an interrupted take is left intact.

This box set is the definitive keepsake for audiophiles, Bill Evans fans and jazz collectors, alike, and, in its limited run, will go quickly.

    Noctunes

Willis Earl Beal was born on the South Side of Chicago. He would never consider it home. An odd kid, he spent a lot of his youth talking with his grandmother, who would entertain his endless questions about the universe and encourage his love of drawing. He developed an obsession with Batman that would last well into his teenage years, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army as a form of vigilante training. Willis Earl Beal died on an army base in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. While in boot camp he was plagued with physical and mental abuse, health complications (which would later require surgery and the removal of large portions of his intestine) forced his discharge. He moved back home. "When that all broke down," Beal says. "I lost a piece of myself." Willis Earl Beal was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After a stint of homelessness there, he worked odd jobs and rented a studio apartment. Though he'd never learned to play any instruments, he began to record raw, lo-fi albums with hand-drawn covers that he'd leave at coffee shops around town alongside flyers seeking a girlfriend with his phone number written on them. Those artifacts would eventually find their way to the cover of Found magazine, then to Jamie-James Medina at XL Recordings. Beal signed with XL's Hot Charity imprint in 2012. Willis Earl Beal died in New York City. Despite the release of two critically well-received albums on XL-Acousmatic Sorcery, a collection of his early home recordings, and a fully orchestrated studio album he recorded in Amsterdam called Nobody Knows-he was a mess. "I'd drink myself into stupors," he says. "I'd walk around in the daytime, crying, then I'd go downtown. The police would bring me home in the morning." Willis Earl Beal was born on a lake twenty miles outside Olympia, Washington. After ending his contract with XL, Beal went to live in the woods, and began an artistic transformation entirely of his own design, from rough-edged outsider-art provocateur to the kind of mysterious crooner one might expect to haunt the outskirts of Twin Peaks. "People had all these ideas about what I was supposed to be," he says. "I had only ever wanted to make lullabies." Beal's development played out over two self-released EPs and a full-length album, and then Beal built the patient, ambient-leaning Noctunes. The album's twelve songs are moving and meditative, thoroughly soaked with mournful synth strings and simple lyricism that Beal says is intentionally minimalistic. "I wanted to create this persona that could say everything perfectly with very little," Beal says. "The record, to me, is a perfect record. I listen to that thing a lot, and it helps me." Willis Earl Beal has yet to be born. Critics and publicists defined him before he'd had a chance to define himself. Their expectations were inextricably linked with race and gender, two concepts Beal thoroughly rejects. Now, two extremely productive years removed from the spotlight, Beal doesn't feel pressure to define himself against anything. His new music is shockingly original, utterly confident, and as ephemeral as Beal himself. He levitates above definition, concerned only with self-discovery and truth-seeking. "I know it sounds falsely altruistic," he says. "But I think a simple voice like mine can serve as an example of some kind of freedom."

    Third

Third is the first studio album from Portishead in over ten years so it's about as highly anticipated as it gets! The album incorporates a lot of samples and synthesizers and drum tracks meld seamlessly with violins and pianos. Haunting, emotional, moody, raw and modern, Third is an incredible record.

Portishead was formed in Bristol, U.K. in 1991 by Geoff Barrow, Beth Gibbons and Adrian Utley. After releasing a short film entitled To Kill A Dead Man and its accompanying music, they were signed to a record deal with Go! Beat Records.

Portisheads first album, Dummy, was released in 1994 and the first single was Numb. The album was successful in both Europe and the United States (where it sold more than 150,000 copies even before the band toured there). Dummy spawned two hit singles, Glory Box and Sour Times, and went on to win the prestigious Mercury Music Prize in 1995. After their initial success, Portishead withdrew from the spotlight for three years until their second and self titled album, Portishead, was released in 1997. The albums sound differed from Dummy, the main differences being that much of the music was composed and played by the band, not sampled from records, and had a grainy, harsher sound. Three singles, Cowboys, Over and All Mine were released, the latter achieving a Top 10 placing in the U.K. In 1997, the band performed a one-off show with strings by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra at Roseland Ballroom in New York. A live album primarily featuring these new orchestral arrangements of the groups songs was released in 1998. For the next few years, the band members concentrated on solo and other pursuits, until in February 2005, the band appeared live for the first time in seven years at the Tsunami Benefit Concert in Bristol.

    Alive 2007

Timed to perfection, Daft Punk's second live album landed exactly ten years after the first, and provides a fitting complement to Alive 1997, easily the best live non-DJ electronica record ever released. While the original featured only a handful of tracks (but found them transformed and tweaked ad infinitum), Alive 2007 is packed with productions, most of them short and many of them getting a big crowd response (all recorded at one show in Paris in June of 2007). As on their first two classic full-lengths, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo display excellent crowd control, pacing the record well, spacing the hits, and building the mood like the good crowd-pleasers they are. It has the feel of a greatest-hits-live concert, but energized by Daft Punk's talents at weaving songs in and out of each other. Even songs from the comparatively desultory Human After All sound rejuvenated in context, with Robot Rock getting the show off to a rousing start. It may not be better or stronger than the original Alive 1997, but it's definitely harder and faster.

    So It Is With Us

Horse Feathers' fourth album on Kill Rock Stars turns over a new leaf: Justin Ringle, the man behind all ten years of Horse Feathers, has the following to say about the making of this album, and the current state of his band: "I wanted to stop. I did all the touring for my fourth record - Cynic's New Year - and ended the year 2012 disillusioned and defeated. I didn't touch my guitar for months, which was the longest I had gone in about 15 years. I thought that my career in music was over and wondered if I even wanted to do it anymore. After an arduous period of selfdoubt and discovery, I finally arrived at the enlightened idea that maybe it should just be a little more fun. I had grown weary of talking to people after shows who said that my last record "helped them through their divorce". I have always been flattered by that sort of thing, but I realized what I wanted to hear was how my last record helped them "have a great weekend". If you have heard any of my previous records you will realize that this transformation from "divorce" band to "weekend" band would be a tall order. And it was! I wouldn't say we've become a "party band" overnight, but I certainly tried to change things a bit. I enlisted friends to play with me that I trusted and had known for years. Along with longtime bandmates Nathan Crockett (strings/mandolin) and Dustin Dybvig (percusion/drums/keys), I threw Justin Power (bass/vocals) into the mix to have an honest to god rhythm section for the first time. With Lauren Vidal on cello and Brad Parsons singing harmonies, we played an impromptu show at Sasquatch and people liked it. We liked it, and the unusual feeling that I had after that show - which I think is referred to as "joy" - became something I wanted to experience again. I shared more. I stopped editing myself as much. The joy of playing live became its own reward, and I dared myself to allow that joy to shape the songwriting. In the end, I was able to let it go, and I don't own it anymore. Which also feels like joy. That's the way it was, and so it is with us."

    Windfall

If the opening notes on Joe Pug's new LP "Windfall" are a bit disorienting, his fans won't likely be surprised. The Austin, TX singer songwriter has made a habit of defying expectations so the piano-driven "Bright Beginnings" and the atmospheric rumination of "Great Hosannas" are just further indication that he's quite comfortable stepping outside of the guy-with-a-guitar trappings of the genre.

His rise has been as improbable as it has been impressive. After dropping out of college and taking on work as a carpenter in Chicago, he got his musical start by providing CDs for his fans to pass along to their friends. This led to a string of sold out shows and a record deal with Nashville indie Lightning Rod Records (Jason Isbell, Billy Joe Shaver). As he toured behind "Messenger" (2010) and The Great Despiser (2012) it was with a band that looked as much like a jazz trio as an Americana band. "I never quite found a live band that captured what I was aiming for until I connected with Greg [Tuohey--electric guitar] and Matt [Schuessler--upright bass]. It was an arrangement that maybe didn't make a ton of sense on paper but 10 minutes into the first rehearsal I knew this was going to be my band." The following years would have them on the road for over four hundred shows, including stops at Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, and The Newport Folk Festival.
