    The 59 Sound

Although New Brunswick, NJ's Gaslight Anthem have only been around a couple years, they've become one of the punk underground's most celebrated acts. They've toured with Against Me, The Loved Ones, and The Bouncing Souls. Their Side One Dummy debut reconciles their love of classic rock and soul icons Bruce Springsteen, Otis Redding, and Tom Petty with their NJ punk roots to create a unique musical amalgam.

    The Perlman Sound

No one could deny that Itzhak Perlman holds a special place in the world of music - and no one could define it more eloquently than his old friend and colleague, the pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim: It is quite impossible to imagine today's violin heritage without the absolute musical genius of Perlman. The most obvious manifestation of that genius is the famous Perlman Sound - lustrous, warm and generous, its impact compounded by often astounding virtuosity; and yet Perlman makes it all look so easy. In fact, he communicates a positive joy in his playing.

Perlman Sound is released as a primer for the deluxe 59-album boxed set Itzhak Perlman: the Complete Warner Recordings, and may be a good option for fans who don't have enough shelf space for this expansive edition. This collection explores his artistry from the finest concerto highlights (Mendelssohn, Brahms, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Korngold, Sibelius, The Four Seasons), to virtuoso solo and chamber repertoire (Paganini Caprice No.24, Bach Partita No.3, the MÉditation from Thaïs, Flight of the Bumblebee, Zapateado) and klezmer and jazz selections. The duo partners and conductors are some of the 20th century's biggest classical stars, many of whom count among Perlman's dearest friends and collaborators.

    Blue Colored Vinyl

The late Nashville songwriter Harlan Howard famously defined the ingredients of a great song as three chords and the truth. Every songwriter knows three chords, but laying bare the truth? Now that can be an altogether trickier affair. In January of 2012, The Gaslight Anthem piled into their old tour van and headed across the New Jersey state line for a 14 hour road trip to Nashville on their own quest for the truth. Their destination was 2806 Azalea Place, Nashville, Blackbird Studio, where the New Brunswick quartet had booked five weeks recording time with producer Brendan O'Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, AC/DC). Their mission: to reconnect with rock 'n' roll in its most feral, pure, stripped-raw form.

Brian Fallon was thirteen years old when he discovered The Clash's self-titled debut album in the racks of Sound Effects Records in Hackettstown, New Jersey: the owner of the store promised the young teenager that the record would change his life. He wasn't wrong. But there was a time, not so very long ago, when The Gaslight's Anthem frontman had grown weary of the sound of electric guitars. After three albums of soulful, impassioned, hearts-on-fire punk rock, Sink Or Swim (2007), The '59 Sound (2008) and American Slang (2010), Fallon needed a change of pace, a change of scenery.

And so, in January of 2011, together with TGA guitar tech Ian Perkins, he formed The Horrible Crowes, a darkly melancholic side-project inspired by his love of The Afghan Whigs, Tom Waits and PJ Harvey. After the band's acclaimed debut album Elsie dropped in September, Fallon joined fellow punk rock troubadours Chuck Ragan, Dan Andriano (Alkaline Trio) and Dave Hause (The Loved Ones) on the acoustic Revival Tour, airing stripped-down versions of Gaslight Anthem and Horrible Crowes songs to packed rooms across Europe. And then he returned home to New Jersey and Gaslight, re-energized, renewed and ready to make a full-tilt rock 'n' roll record again.

After six weeks of that there's nothing you want to hear more than a Marshall stack turned all the way up, he says with a laugh. The result is Handwritten, the most committed, affecting and compelling album of The Gaslight Anthem's career to date. Introduced by muscular lead-off single 45, which received it's world premiere on BBC Radio 1 as Zane Lowe's Hottest Record In The World on April 30, it finds the Jersey boys in inspired form, decanting '60's soul, '70's stadium rock, '80s hardcore and '90's grunge into eleven white-knuckle, blue-collar everyman anthems. Fallon likens its incandescent electrical storms to Tom Petty songs (being) played by Pearl Jam. Put more simply, it's a supercharged American rock 'n' roll classic.

We've taken everything we do and gone to 10 with it, explains Fallon. This is definitely the Gaslight Anthem record I would want next, if I were a fan. American Slang was cool, but this sounds like a band who has plugged back into the electric socket again. I think these songs are the closest thing to what we should have always sounded like, adds guitarist Alex Rosamilia. We just hadn't figured out yet how to play it right.

Fallon credits Brendan O'Brien for capturing the raw, live-off-the-floor feel of Handwritten. Fine-tuned in the living room of the small rental house the band shared in Nashville, its eleven tracks were recorded with the whole band eyeball-to-eyeball in one room at Blackbird, vibing off one another's energy. The electricity in the recordings is tangible. Brendan taught us a ton about songwriting and recording as a band, Fallon notes. The whole experience was amazing. That's the guy that recorded Pearl Jam, that's the guy that recorded Bruce Springsteen, that's the guy that did Rage Against The Machine; and that's the guy you want to say 'It's good', because when he says it's good, that's when it's good.

The purity of O'Brien's stark, unadorned recording process served to inspire Fallon's approach to the lyrical themes on Handwritten too. Where previous Gaslight Anthem albums evoked deathless images of Americana, all Cadillacs, jukeboxes, Ferris wheels and wistful, romanticized vignettes of star-struck lovers disappearing into the great wide open, Handwritten is rooted in Fallon's own experiences, lending the record a more immediate, emotional edge. Now I am no angel but I got nothing to hide, the singer rasps on the brooding grunge-noir of Too Much Blood. Can you say the same thing for yourself tonight?

It's supposed to be a letter to whoever is listening, says Fallon. Like, this is what we got beat up by and maybe you did too. There's so many things that I just never wrote about, real personal stuff that I just wasn't ready to talk about yet. Now I think being an adult I have some reflection on it. We wanted to look back on the music that we first found when we were in high school. The truth is, if you're my age, you were listening to Peal Jam and Nirvana and Soundgarden. When that music came out these were guys that we could relate to. They weren't the biggest bands in the world by accident.

And it's no accident either that with Handwritten, the Gaslight Anthem themselves sound built to take on the world. After years paying their dues in the punk rock underground, their major label debut is assuredly the work of a young band who know their time is now. And their laidback, charismatic frontman is ready. I've always been ready for arenas, Fallon smiles. I've just been waiting for them to catch up to me. I want to play Giant Stadium, I always wanted to be a major label, major league band. If I can be the kid that's on the cover of Time magazine, I'll take it. And I'll buy you a drink while I'm at it.

Beethoven: String Quartet, Op. 132 (Speakers Corner)

Beethoven's lifelong occupation and pioneering work with the string quartet can be divided up into three creative phases. Beginning with the youthful, fresh Quartets op. 18 which soon became highly popular with the public shortly after their composition, then on to the compact and intensive sounding Quartets op. 59, Beethoven continued to develop his style right up to his late period between 1822 and 1826. The opinions of his contemporaries of his late works range from »extremely moving and haunting« to »Chinese« and show that the rhapsodic style was considered alien and wilful, and the structure of the various movements a cause for bafflement.

In the Quartet in A minor, most attention is focussed on the slow movement, which Beethoven headed with the words "Heiliger Dankgesang" ("Holy song of thanksgiving"). The movement with its hymnal melody is fully in the tradition of a protestant chorale, but this sacred grandeur is twice contrasted with optimistic, dance-like sections, "Neue Kraft fÜhlend" ("feeling new strength").

In the meantime, the world-famous LaSalle Quartet has gone down in history; their superb sound, fine intonation and unerring understanding of the highly sensitive late Beethoven is now brought to life once again on this recording.

Recording: December 1975 at Beethoven-Saal, Hannover (Germany), by Klaus Scheibe

    Production: Rainer Brock

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

"More Primitive" finds Seattle's Lonesome Shack exploring the depths of boogie and country blues. The trio's sound is raw and immediate with finger-picked guitar lines, soulful crooning and big danceable grooves. Resignation Day

Due to the increased recognition garnered from their second full-length, Collapser, Minneapolis quartet Banner Pilot decided it was high time to revisit their first full-length, Resignation Day. The time and budget constraints had left an indelible mark on the initial release so the band decided to remix and remaster the album in hopes of capturing the sound they had originally envisioned. The new version surpasses expectations and brings the sound quality up to par with the masterful songwriting and musicianship of the original. The end result is an album that maintains a nearly impossible balance between unbridled youthful energy and maturely crafted unforgettable melodies. In addition, Banner Pilot decided to add two tracks that were not included on the first incarnation of Resignation Day.

Their aesthetic is rooted in early's 80s independent music, and suggests the moment when Joy Division morphed into New Order, the early recordings of The Smiths or even a more desolate Interpol. - Q

Uncannily, for a band from a southern port near the Ukraine border, Motorama resemble a bunch of New Yorkers emulating the sound of 80s Manchester. It would be preposterous if the result didn't sound so sublime. - BBC 6

On How Do You Do, Mayer Hawthorne's first major label effort for Universal Republic Records, the singer/songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist proves that he is not part of the retro soul trend. The classic motown sound that provided the blueprint for his self-produced independent debut, A Strange Arrangement, remains but is joined on How Do You Do by music reminiscent of late 1960's California pop and the best work from the likes of Steely Dan and Chicago.

latter sometimes referred to as "the divine feminine"). Dinner himself claims that "All the songs are about death and transcendence."
At times, Dinner sounds a bit like a sun-bleached cassette tape you'd find stuck behind your car's dashboard-last played at a party in Dusseldorf in 1984-full of echoes of sweaty
depressions, spiritual longings, and early-morning trances." At times, Dinner sounds a bit like melodic EBM-meets-Europop with elements of Danish darkwave. And sometimes he sounds
more like the male descendant of Nico singing Eno-esque pop songs on discarded Julian
Cope tracks. Whomever you ask, you'll find Dinner's sound defies simple classification.
In his own words, his influences range from rock 'n' roll and pop giants like Michael Jackson and
Velvet Underground, to experimental tape-music pioneers like Steve Reich.

Dinner lives a somewhat nomadic existence, having alternated between LA, Berlin and
Copenhagen. This last year, Dinner's itinerary has included falling in love with a baroness in
Berlin, learning Qigong from a renowned Sifu on a mountainside in the Algarve, working on
commercial pop songs in Hollywood ("The essence of dark magic," according to Dinner), and
playing shows at festivals and galleries all over Europe. His current location is LA, where he is working on his debut full-length. Look out for that 2015.

    Release Date: June 29, 2018*

Six-time Grammy-nominee Florence + the Machine are set to release their highly-anticipated new album 'High As Hope' via Virgin EMI / Republic Records. 'High As Hope' is the sound of an artist who appears more certain than ever of herself. Hatari! - Music from the Paramount Motion Picture

200-gram 33 1/3 LP, mastered at Sterling Sound by Ryan Smith from the Analog Tapes

Plated and Pressed by Quality Record Pressings

Deluxe tip-on Jacket by Stoughton Printing

    Featuring Baby Elephant Walk

Featured on Harry Pearson's Famous Recommended List of fine audio recordings

Coming off a double Oscar win for his Breakfast at Tiffany's score, Henry Mancini produced this score for the Howard Hawks-directed, John Wayne-starring safari comedy Hatari!.

This is at first a fun blend of jazz and Afro-exotica, jungle drums mixed with a classic bop combo. Elsewhere, however, the soundtrack opts for some pleasant, but very Western jazz, only stopping for the African instrument-sampler 'The Sounds of Hatari,' which features some nice treated piano. The filmmakers were probably hoping that the Mercer and Carmichael song 'Just for Tonight' would be as much a success as Tiffany's 'Moon River,' but if Hatari! is memorable for anything, it's for the incredibly goofy 'Baby Elephant Walk,' which has gone on to be infamous musical shorthand for kookiness of any stripe. - AllMusic.com.

Now Music from the Paramount Picture score Hatari! is back bigger and better than ever! We've gone the deluxe Analogue Productions route - remastered from the original analog tape by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound, cut at 33 1/3 RPM, plated and pressed as a 200-gram LP at Quality Record Pressings. Then packaged in a deluxe tip-on jacket from Stoughton Printing. A great title, a brilliant reissue. Exceptional!

    Tomorrow's World

Mute has announced the first vinyl release of Tomorrow's
World by Erasure, their 14th album originally released in
    2011.

Written by Vince Clarke and Andy Bell in New York,
London, and at Clarke's cabin studio in Maine with
producer Frankmusik (Lady Gaga, Pet Shop Boys), the
release found Erasure settling nicely into that groove that
the best veteran bands often do. With Clarke's vintage
collection of analog synths providing the final touch,
the end result is a collection of electronic songs that
sound contemporary and classic at the same time with
all the hallmarks of vintage Erasure: accessible songs,
    flamboyant vocals and fizzing synths.

    Underneath The Pine

Columbia, South Carolina's Chaz Bundick (aka Toro Y Moi) rose to the fore of the music blogosphere in the summer of 2009 when he and a few peers made their hazy bedroom recordings the most talked-about sound of the season. Critics across the board took notice of the range of his compositions, and his debut album, Causers of This, showcased his ability to make elements of Brian Wilson's pop, 80s R&B, and Stone's Throw hip hop coalesce into a distinct sound that's as suitable for a dancefloor as it is a pair of headphones.

When Chaz first signed to Carpark Records, the plan was to release two records in 2010, one electronic and one with live instrumentation and although it didn't quite fit into the same calendar year as his debut, Underneath the Pine is that latter offering. This release sees him following
the same creative urges to completely different ends. Having spent the year listening to film composers like Ennio Morricone and François de Roubaix, Bundick returned to his home in Columbia, the birthplace of many Toro tracks of yore, to bring his new ideas to fruition.

The result of these sessions is an album evocative of R. Stevie Moore's homespun ruminations, David Axelrod's sonic scope, Steve Reich-ian piano phrasing, and the pervasive funk of his first record. Underneath the Pine announces a new phase for an artist whose talent defies classification.

Live From Austin, TX (Neko Case)

This debut ACL performance on August 9, 2003, captures songs from Neko Case's three seminal solo releases at the time, combining elements of country, gospel and punk for a very unique sound. That's why pundits often find the music hard to classify. Which is a good thing. Her voice has been described as lush, torchy, melancholic - even scary (someone once wrote that "she sings like Patsy Cline's ghost"). She certainly doesn't sound like anything else on today's hit parade. Neko began her career as a drummer in a punk band, but it wasn't long before she started experimenting with songwriting and singing. She also continues to perform as a member of The New Pornographers, but her solo work is where her songwriting skills shine most. As she herself says, "I want to write songs that are timeless...maybe just something more like a novel than a short story." After the show, Neko took the time to write the ACL staff to thank everybody for making her, her band and friends feel so welcome. "I feel very proud of how the show turned out...It's so great to find out that something you admire so much is run by good people. Be proud! You kick ass!" You, too, Neko
