    The Astonishing

The Astonishing is undisputedly the most ambitious undertaking by a band whose cerebral compositions already define the vanguard of progressive hard rock.

The Astonishing is enriched exponentially by the integration of a real orchestra and choir, arranged by conductor David Campbell, whose work graces over 450 gold and platinum albums, including watershed releases from Adele, Justin Timberlake, Linkin Park, Evanescence, BeyoncÉ, and his son, Beck. The Astonishing was produced by Petrucci with engineering and mixing by Richard Chycki, whose resume includes work with Rush, Aerosmith, and Mick Jagger. Other organic sounds are more abundant than at any point in the band's history, with Rudess in particular relishing the tones from a grand piano and Hammond organ.

Like Tommy or The Wall, the songs on The Astonishing work as both singular compositions and overall story components. Writing the music as a duo, Petrucci and Rudess venture into unexplored corners of their sound without sacrificing their musical identity.

    Broadcasting

In 2005, COMEBACK KID joined VICTORY RECORDS and released the astonishing hardcore masterpiece, Wake The Dead, the follow-up to their acclaimed debut, Turn It Around. Wake The Dead was a call to arms. It was life changing and life affirming. It was the communique‚ that the restless youth of the world desperately needed. Punknews.org called it a hands-down 10 out of 10. Wake The Dead made COMEBACK KID one of the most celebrated hardcore bands of new millennium. The band responded to the call and toured the globe several times over in honest hardcore fashion. They played any festival, VFW hall and basement that would have them. Countries that do not even speak the band's language still understood the message and hailed COMEBACK KID as one of today's premier hardcore bands and made them one of the most successful bands in the genre.

The band entered 2007 with a new record that will further their message of community and strengthen the perseverance and pride of the hardcore scene. Broadcasting is the band's monstrous collection of anthems that will inspire listeners to tear into the pit, and chant along as if their lungs depended on it. Broadcasting combines breakneck hardcore punk rock in the tradition of MINOR THREAT, BAD BRAINS and 7 SECONDS with forward thinking lyrics and ferocious melodies similar to RISE AGAINST, RANCID and BAD RELIGION. It is the band's most ambitious record and was one of 2007's most anticipated releases.

    As If We Existed

This is the debut and next link in the chain of cerebral hip-hop by the proteges of politically minded rapper Sage Francis. Beat artist DiViNCi plays his MPC with the passion and intensity of a Hendrix or a Townsend, filling the stage with an astonishing sonic landscape. These athletic beats form the perfect setting for MC Swamburger's flow; a tongue-twisting, machine-gunning cadence whose precision is surgical in both rhythm and message. With tough, spiritual tracks that take aim at specific issues like cultural revolution, ethnic alcoholism, and personal wellness, As If We Existed is a public service announcement with spit.

Nearly half a century after his death at 36, the astonishing saxophonist and flutist Eric Dolphy is still influencing and inspiring the most adventuresome jazz musicians. Dolphy was daring and iconoclastic while fully immersed in the jazz tradition. His musicianship was so thorough that innovators like Charles Mingus and John Coltrane held him in awe. In a dream partnership, Dolphy and trumpeter Booker Little made a handful of recordings in 1960 and '61, shortly before Little's own premature death. The first of them are on this album. Included is the rare Serene, never before issued with the session's other material. With Jaki Byard, Ron Carter, Roy Haynes

On The Threshold Of A Dream

On The Threshold Of A Dream is the fourth album by The Moody Blues, released in 1969. Like most Moody albums, On The Threshold Of A Dream follows a concept. It explores dreams, especially on the second side, which climaxes with the Voyage suite, inspired in part by Richard Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra.

This album is oozing with bright, splashy creative flourishes in two seemingly contradictory directions that somehow come together as a valid whole. On The Threshold Of A Dream provided The Moody Blues with their first British #1 album and remained on the charts for an astonishing 70 weeks.

The Moody Blues are regarded as one of the most innovative and successful rock bands in music history and you only have to put down the needle on this record to be convinced that this bold statement is indeed a fact.

Owen - the acclaimed solo musical guise of singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Mike Kinsella - has made an astonishing leap forward with THE KING OF WHYS, the first work in his two-decade-plus career to be made entirely outside of his beloved Chicago home base. Produced by S. Sometimes stars emerge. Sometimes stars are thrust upon us. And sometimes stars simply slip into the atmosphere as if propelled by something otherworldly. It is into this last category that the astonishing presence, voice, look and feel of Lana Del Rey falls. Musical stardom is not an option with Ms Del Rey. It is her vocation. She calls herself the 'gangsta Nancy Sinatra' and defines her genre as 'Hollywood pop/sadcore,' a dramatic new loop for pop music. Her look she describes as 'Lolita got lost in the hood.' Get used to it all. This isn't just soundbite, it's Lana's reality.

The EP's lead single is Ride, a downtempo pop ballad produced by Rick Rubin and co-written by Video Games author Justin Parker. The video for Ride premiered at a promotional event in Santa Monica on October 10, airing online two days later. A cover of the popular 1950s track, Blue Velvet, and an original track, Burning Desire, were included on the EP as promotional singles. An ancillary music video for Blue Velvet was used in a commercial for clothing line H&M to help promote the EP. For the 2012 Paris Motor Show, Del Rey served as a model for the Jaguar F-Type luxury automobile and performed Burning Desire as another avenue of promotion. Burning Desire also serves as the soundtrack for an eponymously titled short film starring Damian Lewis scheduled for a 2013 release. A teaser trailer was released to Del Rey's official YouTube channel with snippets of each song featured on the EP. Even before its release, the song Cola received media attention due to the controversial nature of its lyrics. The track was confirmed to be the EP's second single several days after its release. Music videos for Ride, Blue Velvet, and Bel Air were posted to VEVO and YouTube to help promote the EP.

Sean Rowe has spent much of the last year traveling the country with just his guitar, performing in people's living rooms. "It's like I'm some kind of a bearded salesman," he says, "Going door to door but instead of vacuum cleaners I'm selling all these feelings that come with the songs. It's a really intense experience for listeners to have me there in their homes playing. They're not used to having a stranger show up, play music, drink their beer and eat their food. But I think that's how we're supposed to be. It only feels strange because we've made it that way."

It is this same sense of unflinching connection that has shaped Rowe's extraordinary new album Madman. The singer, who The Wall Street Journal wrote "recalls the ecstatic intensity of late-'60s Van Morrison and stark subtlety of late-era Johnny Cash" has created a beautifully primal work. Madman is deliberately simple in both arrangement and composition. It is soul music in the purest and most literal sense, hypnotic rhythms, warmly distorted guitars and Rowe's incredible voice recalling a time, real or imagined, when music and people seemed
    distinctly more connected.

The sound of Madman is influenced, in large part, by the hypnotic guitars of Delta blues. The influence is most apparent on the album's second track "Shine My Diamond Ring" with its guitar and stomping bass drum. "Desiree" is a raucous deconstructed take on early disco, with a pulsating bass, Nile Rogers-like guitar picking and a looser than ever Rowe singing with absolute abandon. But there are still the trademark ballads that first gained Rowe attention on his debut, Magic, showcases for the astonishing voice and honest emotional songwriting that continues to garner Sean Rowe much deserved acclaim.

    In The Flat Field

Few debut albums have ever arrived as nearly perfectly formed as In the Flat Field. It practically invented what remains for many as the blueprint of goth music. In the Flat Field contains a wide variety of inspirations and ideas. The astonishingly precise rhythm section of David J and Kevin Haskins pulls off a variety of jaw-dropping performances, including the high-paced tension of the title track and the brooding crawl of "Spy in the Cab." Daniel Ash, much like his longtime hero Mick Ronson, turns out to be a master of turning relatively simple guitar parts into apocalyptic explosions, from the background fills on "St. Vitus Dance" to the brutal descending chords of "Stigmata Martyr." Murphy, meanwhile, channels as much Iggy Pop as he does Bowie, proving to be no simple copyist of either, able to both maniacally sing-shout and take a somewhat lighter touch throughout. The album concludes with the seven-minute "Nerves," an aptly titled piece that alternates between understated energy and unleashed power spiraling toward a dramatic ending. In the Flat Field started off Bauhaus' album career with a near-perfect bang.

The ultimate pleasure in witnessing musical icon k.d. lang perform on stage - besides basking in the beauty of her astonishing, incomparable voice - is the deep connection she shares with her audience. Their mutual admiration and affection is undeniable, and it has arguably been the fuel propelling lang from one remarkable recording to the next.

You have to respect your audience, lang asserts. Without them, you're essentially standing alone, singing to yourself. That's not particularly appealing to an artist who craves the communal experience of sharing new ideas and sounds. The ideal scenario is to have an audience; to build and nurture a bond with them.

    Closer

Ranked 157/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Formed in 1977, Joy Division (guitarist Bernard Albrecht, bassist Peter Hook, drummer Stephen Morris, and vocalist Ian Curtis) helped usher in the Post-Punk movement with their haunting melodies and melancholy lyrics. By incorporating synthesizers into their music, they paved the way for an entire generation of bands who would soon follow in their footsteps. The band released two classic albums, 1979s UNKNOWN PLEASURES and 1980s CLOSER as well as several singles, before Curtis suicide on the eve of their first American tour. Following Curtis death, Albrecht (now Sumner), Hook, and Morris formed the band New Order, and would continue to record over the next twenty-five years.

If Unknown Pleasures was Joy Division at their most obsessively, carefully focused, ten songs yet of a piece, Closer was the sprawl, the chaotic explosion that went every direction at once. Who knows what the next path would have been had Curtis not chosen his end? But steer away from the rereading of his every lyric after that date, treat Closer as what everyone else thought it was at first simply the next album and Joy Division's power just seems to have grown. Hannett was still producing, but seems to have taken as many chances as the band itself throughout differing mixes, differing atmospheres, new twists and turns define the entirety of Closer, songs suddenly returned in chopped-up, crumpled form, ending on hiss and random notes. Opener Atrocity Exhibition was arguably the most fractured thing the band had yet recorded, Sumner's teethgrinding guitar and Morris' Can-on-speed drumming making for one heck of a strange start. Keyboards also took the fore more so than ever the drowned pianos underpinning Curtis' shadowy moan on The Eternal, the squirrelly lead synth on the energetic but scared-out-of-its-wits Isolation, and above all else Decades, the album ender of album enders. A long, slow crawl down and out, Curtis' portrait of lost youth inevitably applied to himself soon after, its sepulchral string-synths are practically a requiem. Songs like Heart and Soul and especially the jaw-dropping, wrenching Twenty Four Hours, as perfect a demonstration of the tension/release or soft/loud approach as will ever be heard, simply intensify the experience. Joy Division was at the height of their powers on Closer, equaling and arguably bettering the astonishing Unknown Pleasures, that's how accomplished the four members were. Rock, however defined, rarely seems and sounds so important, so vital, and so impossible to resist or ignore as here.

    Blowin' The Blues Away

A Blue Note essential, Blown' The Blue Away by the Horace Silver Quintet & Trio, is part of the Blue Note 75 anniversary vinyl.

Everyone's favorite Horace Silver record featured the classic quintet with Blue Mitchell and Junior Cook. The title tune, the beautiful ballad Peace and the soulful Sister Sadie are now standards in the jazz canon. Even given Silver's astonishing track record, this one stands out.
