The Best Of Nina Simone'
Nina Simone is hands down one of the best Blues singers of the 20th century and only artists the likes of Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith had the power to lay a soul bare like she could! This is no better exemplified than on Pastel Blues' stripped-down album opener Be My Husband, which was later covered famously by Jeff Buckley. Also featured on this beloved 1965 Philips Records release are dazzling interpretations of songs directly related to the aforementioned songstresses including Nobody Knows When You're Down And Out, originally sung by Smith and Holiday's signature song Strange Fruit, not to mention the traditional spiritual Sinnerman, which remains one of Simone's most popular recordings. At long last, Pastel Blues is back on vinyl courtesy of this Music On Vinyl 180g audiophile reissue!1. Be My Husband

I Put A Spell On You (Awaiting Repress)I Put a Spell on You is the 1965 album by Nina Simone, and features some of her best known songs. I Put a Spell on You is a song originally by Screamin' Jay Hawkins. The original version gave the song an ironic theme, but Simone transformed it into a thrilling love song, complete with horns and strings. It had become one of her most well-known songs. Silk & SoulImport
Recorded in New York in 1967, Silk & Soul is Nina Simone's second album for RCA.
And despite arrangements that don't always best suit her voice, this album does contain classics 'I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free', which would become a Civil Rights anthem, 'It Be's That Way Sometimes', written by her brother Sam Waymon, and 'The Turning Point', a song that seems to be about a child making a new friend, but turns out to question the origins of racism.
Ms Simone also takes on Dusty Springfield by covering 'The Look Of Love', which was originally featured in the 1966 James Bond spoof Casino Royale and is greatly inspired by Mozart in the fugue-like 'Consummation'.It Be's That Way Sometime

Mama's Gun is the second studio album by Neo Soul singer Erykah Badu, released in 2000. Recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York City, the album incorporates Funk, Soul and Jazz styles. Covering themes of insecurity, social issues and personal relationships, Badu delivered a highly intimate and personal album that reached Platinum two months after its release. Mama's Gun features substantial contributions from several members of the Soulquarians outfit, of which Badu was a member. It also features guests such as soul singer Betty Wright and trumpeter Roy Hargrove.
The album contains the single Bag Lady which, with its colorful, artsy music video, shot to #1 on the R&B charts, and also into the Top 10 on the billboard charts. Bag Lady was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and for Best R&B Song. Also the song Didn't Cha Know? was nominated for Best R&B Song.
Rolling Stone magazine applauded her for taking chances the way Stevie Wonder or Nina Simone did in their prime and went on to say she has taken her art to the next level. Entertainment Weekly called the album a '70s soul homage featuring live musicians and a smooth-funk sound that wouldn't be out of place on a CTI record.LP1

ProjectionsGreat dance music albums - albums that sound as good on headphones and home speakers as they do on club soundsystems - aren't easily made. In a form whose primary aims have been to move dancefloors and to move on, full lengths that thrill the head, heart and the feet with equal power are few and far between. We believe Romare has made one.
With the gripping shock of the new that announces the best records of the genre - from Entroducing through Blue Lines to Ambient Classics - Romare has both a singular style, and great deal to say with it. Projections comes off like Voodoo Ray reworked by DJ Shadow; its drumming littered with infectious swing, its samples illuminating and attention gripping, its atmosphere pronounced and consistent, and its riffs and hooks heavy - and unabashedly joyous.
The album is a heady mix of homage and fresh approach, a statement from a young artist unafraid to revel in his influences, and confident in his own originality. The songs on Projections are homages to elements of American/African culture in the USA - which Romare studied academically. Taking his name from Romare Bearden, the well-known cut'n'paste artist / collagist, and applying similar techniques to music.
Rainbow is a homage to gay rights via disco in the 70's, and Work Song to the great American work song tradition. Opener "Nina's Charm" sets out the stall for the album. A tiny, near spoken snippet of Nina Simone's voice is set against a hypnotic synth riff and a dislocated gospel-choir chant. The result is something utterly fresh; a tone setter that worms through the ear and floods the brain in soothing catharsis. "Motherless Child" opens with a shuffling jazz swing, allowing its sample of the African-American spiritual from which it takes its title to shine in full. When a simple, riff-like melody arrives, the song transforms into a sultry, glorious slow-dance workout. "Lover Man's" striking, cut-up synth riff is set up against chiming stabs and slurred chords, a snatched, swing vocal enticing us in to the wonkiest of grooves.
Romare reimagines the profound cultural impact of the collage technique for a new generation of music listeners. With his signing to Ninja Tune, coming hot on the heels of his excellent 12"s on underground institution Black Acre, and compilation inclusions by Tiga, Bonobo and Brownswood, the stage is set for his debut album. Projections, like the best albums from the dance music world, is informed by scenes and genres but not entirely of them. It's a self-contained universe that rewards much exploration. Most of all, it's excited about the possibilities within music, and vastly exciting itself.1. Nina's Charm

About Pure Pleasure
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.1. Mood Indigo

EP II(+ Skisser EP)Alice Boman's voice hits with the emotional force and haunting fragility of Nina Simone. Timeless and direct, the Scandinavian singer returns with a wistful collection of songs on EP II, set to be released via The Control Group (Cate Le Bon, El Perro Del Mar), with a special bonus edition of the stunning debut EP, Skisser.
Hailing from Malmö, Sweden, the singer/songwriter first appeared when she released 2013's Skisservia Adrian Recordings in Europe. Swedish for sketches, Skisser was just that - delicate home recordings from her bedroom Boman gracefully unleashed to the world, that were never meant to fall on any other ears but her own.
Swedish label, Adrian Recordings were wrapping up after a busy summer and had no intention of doing an additional release, heard Skisser and claimed that time itself stopped, and decided to issue the EP on vinyl. The response was overwhelming, with whispers of her craft on The Line of Best Fitand The Wild Honey Pie, eventually growing so loud, that praise from the likes of Interview Magazineand The Guardian naturally followed.
Lead track and first single from the release, What, is a lo-fi fairy tale and fitting introduction to EP II.Much in the vein of Skisser, Boman's penchant for creating beauty through simplicity is carried across to EP II. My lyrics are quite simple and maybe don't give room for a lot of interpretations, so maybe there is not even any need for descriptions, she muses about the new release, which was recorded in a cabin in the Swedish woods - a fitting backdrop to the ethereal EP. And anyway, I like it when you let the music and the lyrics speak for themselves.

I've been doing this (cherry picking great recordings for reissue) for a long time, and I think I've got a good idea of what audiophiles like to hear. This is all of your female vocal demo cuts in one place. - Chad Kassem, Acoustic Sounds owner
Female vocalists have forever been celebrated by audiophiles and music lovers alike. Whether the delivery is delicate or bombastic, a great female vocal well-recorded is just so sensuous. It's the genre that most often typifies the potential of hi-fi and what it can do to engage our emotions. It's no wonder the hallways of any hi-fi show will be resonating with the sounds of sparsely-arranged recordings of great women singers. It's the genre that best shows off the systems that manufacturers and dealers are trying to sell.
Now, you can have all of those best demo tracks on one record. Showstoppers by Julie London, Diana Krall, Rickie Lee Jones, Nina Simone, Janis Ian, Phoebe Snow, Jennifer Warnes, Dusty Springfield, Shelby Lynne and many more. Every single track is an audiophile demo classic. Drop the needle and drop your friend's jaw!
Michael Fremer, of AnalogPlanet.com and Stereophile Magazine, walks you through each track and its historic place with very thorough and entertaining liners.

Studio Rio Presents: The Brazil ConnectionLegacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release Studio Rio Presents: The Brazil Connection, an innovative new collection of 12 beloved vocal recordings re-experienced through new samba and bossa nova arrangements created by iconic Brazilian musicians and The Berman Brothers.
Embracing the All In One Rhythm™ Theme of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Studio Rio Presents: The Brazil Connection blends 12 iconic performances--from Bill Withers, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Billie Holiday, Sly & The Family Stone, The Isley Brothers, Mel TormÉ, Nina Simone, Johnny Nash, Dave Brubeck with Carmen McRae, Andy Williams and Sarah Vaughan--with new, samba and bossa nova arrangements and production inspired by the spirit of Brazilian music.
Working on Studio Rio Presents: The Brazil Connection project, the Berman Brothers sought out the original multi-track masters and utilized an all-new, state-of-the-art separation technology from Science of Sounds to extract exquisitely pristine and detailed vocals. The newly isolated vocals were then melded with brand-new, authentic backing arrangements played by Studio Rio, an all-star cast of Brazilian musical pioneers from the bossa nova and samba genres, including Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner Roberto Menescal and Brazilian musical legend Marcos Valle.
Studio Rio Presents: The Brazil Connection is the latest innovative musical project from the Berman Brothers (Frank and Christian), a production team whose previous work includes Rhythms Del Mundo (2006), a cross-cultural album summit which which fused an all-star cast of Cuban musicians including Ibrahim Ferrer and Omara Portuondo of the Buena Vista Social Club with US and UK artists and superstars such as U2, Coldplay, Sting, Jack Johnson, Maroon5, Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs and others. Rhythms del Mundo was released in more than 61 countries and received multiple sales awards worldwide.
During the past 20 years, the Berman Brothers have received more than 90 gold and platinum awards, two BMI Awards, a Golden Globe nomination, a Grammy nomination (for Love One Another, recorded by Cher) and a place in history for their production and remix of the Baha Men's colossal hit, Who Let the Dogs Out. As producers, writers and publishers, the Bermans have worked with an array of international superstars including Coldplay, Sting, Cher, Real McCoy, Dido, Maroon5, Sophie B Hawkins, Reamonn and members of the legendary Buena Vista Social Club.
Music is the heart and soul of Brazil, celebrating with syncopated beats and beautifully expressive melodies. It's the life force of the entire culture, wrote the Berman Brothers in their notes for Studio Rio Presents: The Brazil Connection. We have always had a huge appreciation of Brazilian music. Between us, we have a massive collection of bossa nova and samba recordings, new and old, a lot which we found in flea markets in Amsterdam, Paris, and London.... Once you get into this music, there really is no way to stop. It was this joyful and timeless music that inspired the idea for this collection. Our goal was to bring the Brazilian joie de vivre to iconic performances by well-known American artists like Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, The Isley Brothers, and many others. What would these classic songs sound like had they been recorded in the studios of Rio De Janeiro in the first place, with the best Brazilian musicians and arrangers?"
"It was an amazing journey-bringing together these American classics and the vibrancy of Brazilian music with the help of so many talented musicians, arrangers and a dedicated production team. We learned many things putting together this music including what was the most important, and least surprising lesson of all: Brazil is the most musical place we have ever been in our lives.1. Soul EyesSinger, songwriter and pianist Kandace Springs will release her debut full-length album Soul Eyes on Blue Note Records. Produced by Grammy-winning producer Larry Klein (Lizz Wright, Melody Gardot, Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock), the album touches upon soul and pop while channeling her jazz influences as well as her Nashville upbringing. Kandace counts such stylists as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Roberta Flack and Norah Jones as her heroes, but as evidenced by Soul Eyes, Springs mimics none of them.
Kandace's journey to discovering her uniqueness didn't happen overnight. In fact, her 2014 self-titled debut EP had a decidedly contemporary R&B/hip-hop bent with production by Pop & Oak (Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Miguel). The EP was incredibly well-received and led to performances on Late Show With David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, as well as appearances at the Afropunk and Bonnaroo festivals.
Kandace was dubbed a "suave songstress" (Wall Street Journal), "a versatile and vital artist" (Afropunk), and "a vocal force to be reckoned with" (Okayplayer). Essence Magazine named her a New & Next artist and Interview Magazine made her their Music Discovery, writing that while "Hearing the word jazz might revert a listener's thoughts to the music of yesteryear...Up-and-comer Kandace Springs aims to change this notion. The singer, songwriter, and pianist blends elements of soul, jazz, and pop, producing a unique and modern twist on the genre that appeals to young and old listeners alike."
As amazing an experience as that was, as Kandace got ready to record her album she couldn't shake the feeling that she wasn't yet singing her true self. Conversations with her longtime producers Carl Sturken and Evan Rogers led to soul searching and rethinking her musical direction. Also during this period, Kandace attracted the attention of Prince, who heard her makeover of Sam Smith's "Stay With Me" on the website Okayplayer. The music icon invited her to perform with him at Paisley Park for the 30th anniversary of Purple Rain. "He encouraged me a lot before I recorded this new record, especially during the time in which I was trying to figure out my sound," Kandace says. "He told me that I needed to do what comes naturally to me. He was absolutely right."
For Soul Eyes, Kandace continued working closely with Rogers and Sturken, but they also recruited Klein to help the singer bring out her distinctive artistic traits. "Larry wanted me to be free in the studio," she recalls. "I've been through a lot of other sessions in which the producer tries to take control of your sound. Larry was just like, 'Go in and play what you feel.' That ultimately led to the best outcome; he captured this record perfectly."
Klein praises Kandace as a "natural." "In this era, in which flash and hunger for fame is often equated with talent, she's that rare person who sings and plays because that is what she needs to do in life," he says. "When I first heard Kandace, I was sold after hearing one song. Her smoky voice coupled with a sense of phrasing way beyond her years, and her angular way of accompanying herself on piano grabbed me right away."
The eleven songs contained on Soul Eyes are a mix of Kandace's originals and co-writes as well as the jazz classic "Soul Eyes" and songs by Jesse Harris, Shelby Lynne, War, and others. The album features Kandace's playing piano alongside an illustrious cast of musicians that includes trumpeter Terence Blanchard, guitarists Dean Parks and Jesse Harris, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, organist Pete Kuzma, bassist Dan Lutz, percussionist Pete Korpela.1.
