    Bird At St. Nick's

Charlie Parker attracted young musicians like a magnet. Among them was trombonist Jimmy Knepper, who, at a time when tape recording was a brand-new thing, captured Bird in flight one winter night in Manhattan. He soared, and when Charles Mingus heard the music years later, he issued it as the first release on his new Jazz Workshop label. Since then, many private recordings of Parker have been made public. This was one of the first, and remains one of the best, a precious musical document.

Conference Of The Birds (Awaiting Repress)

This was Dave Holland's first album as a full-fledged leader. An album of driving, progressive jazz it is also of historical significance as the only occasion when Rivers and Braxton, two of the music's most strikingly original saxophonists, recorded together. This summit meeting received raves from the press. "If you've found the new music lacking in swing, cohesion and variety, get to this album," insisted DownBeat in a five star review, "Don't miss this one." Recorded 1972.

    The Impossible Bird

Nick Lowe's triumphant return to the indie world back in 1994 was marked by the release of the critically-acclaimed The Impossible Bird. With the overall excitement that followed the release, it was evident that Lowe's music had taken a slightly different twist in the way of a more mature tone and stripped down musical arrangements. And although it was unknown at the time, his next two records Dig My Mood and The Convincer would travel the same road, achieving greater success with each effort. These three records always represented a kind of trilogy to Nick and now for the first time, all three are being issued on vinyl by Nick's now longtime label Yep Roc Records.

Pious Bird of Good Omen was originally released in 1969 as a compilation of the band's bluesy roots: their first four UK singles and their B-sides and two tracks by bluesman Eddie Boyd with Fleetwood Mac backing. The album's sound is laidback, down & VERY dirty, featuring scorching cover versions of Little Willie John's Need Your Love So Bad and Robert Johnson's I Believe My Time Ain't Long.

The B-side features the international hit single Albatross and Peter Green's composition Black Magic Woman, the latter being popularized by Santana's version in 1970. This album is a must-have for blues fans.

Fleetwood Mac is a band with many faces. In contrast to their poppy sound of the 70s, Fleetwood Mac actually started out in the sixties as a psychedelic blues band under guitarist Peter Green's lead. Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight

In addition to inciting widespread fan fervor, Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight has drawn overwhelming critical and tastemaker support across the board. Pitchfork claimed, "SCOTT's second studio album, Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight, is the Houston rapper's most concise and cohesive project to date," adding, "He has always been a mood-setter and a vocalist, and he is in full command of the vibe, tone, and mood of this entire project more than ever." Houston Press wrote, "SCOTT's playground is chaos; the pure and unbridled variety that some have tried to emulate live but have ultimately settled for second place," while W Magazine fittingly dubbed him, "Your new rap superhero." Billboard described the album as "his own trap opera," and Rolling Stone profiled him extensively.

Over the course of 14 tracks, TRAVIS threads together an engaging, enthralling, and epic patchwork of anesthetized and apocalyptic production, mind-numbing raps, and glorious hooks punctuated by an A-list cast of collaborators. Kendrick Lamar delivers hard-hitting and hypnotic bars in the middle of "Goosebumps" just before a signature chantable chorus. "The Ends" veers between a haunting hum and a verse-for-verse tandem of our protagonist and Andre 3000 of OutKast. "Way Back" drips into a searing guitar solo as "Sweet Sweet" fires off one of his stickiest hooks to date. By the time The Weeknd and TRAVIS serve up a smooth send-off on "Wonderful," you're in the Trap for life, and you won't want to leave

Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight is finally here, and TRAVIS SCOTT's presence can be felt throughout pop culture louder than ever.

The Pious Bird of Good Omen (Speakers Corner)

After the break-up of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in the summer of 1967, the time seemed ripe for Peter Green, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood to take their leave from raw British rock 'n' roll. The newly established band Fleetwood Mac first turned to black blues, and their art of playing was so similar to that of other groups that the magazine Eye criticised them for their »almost ridiculous mimicry«. However, their choice of performance style took them in the right direction and in 1969, the year in which The Pious Bird Of Good Omen appeared, they landed at the top end of the pop charts, even ahead of The Beatles and Stevie Wonder.

Of course, in the cover version of Little Willie John's Need Your Love So Bad, which is treated with a velvety string sound, and other bluesy songs, the American influence still makes itself heard, but not without success! The highly individual sound of the group comes best through in the now legendary numbers such as the weightless, gliding Albatross and Black Magic Woman with its Latin and blues elements. Judged the best British blues ever to be played (allmusic.com), one can now sit back and enjoy this great album.

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Randy Wolfe, better known as Randy California, was a founding member of psychedelic 60s rockers Spirit. As a teenager he played guitar in Jimi Hendrix's band, Jimmy James and the Blue Flames. Hendrix himself gave Randy the stage name to differentiate him from band mate Randy Palmer. 15-year-old California left the Blue Flames when they embarked on a European tour and his parents refused to let him go. Released in 1972, Kapt. Kopter and the (Fabulous) Twirly Birds is California's first solo record. Heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix, this album is dense and way ahead of its time.

    Birds

Seth Glier's new album Birds is steeped in conflict and contradictions. There's grief and loss, but also strength and resilience; doubt and dismay, but also a sense of optimism as Glier confronts heavy topics and wrestles them into the daylight.

Glier (pronounced Gleer) recorded Birds in an airy loft in western Massachusetts outfitted with a grand piano and floor-to-ceiling windows. Birds roost just outside those windows, on the roof of the converted mill building where he lives, and they became his sympathetic audience while Glier made the album. I felt a tremendous amount of comfort talking to the Birds, he says I'd check in with them regularly to see how they thought things were going so far.

Birds is Glier's fifth album, and the latest entry in a burgeoning career that has included a Grammy nomination and a pair of Independent Music Awards while touring with artists including Ani DiFranco and Ryan Adams.

The songs on Birds range from personal to political, and are bound together by the awareness that our world is a fragile place that is all the more magical for it. Glier makes that point on a large scale with Water on Fire, a terse, grinding tune that opens with a cynical reworking of a Ray Charles lyric as Glier uses fracking to dig into the false equivalence between freedom and capitalism. Hasn't Hit Me Yet has a more visceral, intimate approach: the soulful slow jam, full of warm guitars and multi-tracked vocals, is about the death of Glier's autistic brother.

Together, those songs represent the opposite poles of Birds. I was really trying to explore connections on this record, Glier says. Among those connections is the one between race and the criminal justice system on Justice for All, a raw chain-gang stomp that sounds almost like an old field recording. Like I Do takes a more oblique tack, drawing out feelings of anger through the use of noisy synthesizers and fuzzed-out bass pads.

The songs on Birds reflect a scope of sound and style: the title track is lush and & orchestral, for example, while Too Much Water pairs Glier's voice and piano with subtle accompaniment from horns, for a classic, elegant feel that calls to mind Harry Nilsson in the early '70s. People Like Us is jaunty and up-tempo, while the trebly guitar arpeggios and moaning saxophone on Just Because I Can sound like a sock-hop slow dance, until you zero in on lyrics delivered by a narrator who dynamites his domestic bliss simply for the power trip. Conflict. Contradiction.

Even the cover tune, a reimagined version of Buffalo Springfield's For What It's Worth, evokes urgency. Although it was written 50 years ago, it's still about what's happening right now, Glier says.

Birds began taking shape after Glier lost his brother, Jamie, who died in October 2015, and inspired a TED Talk performance that Glier gave in 2016. My brother passing away was a huge component of where I was and what I was looking for, Glier says. In particular, I was looking for meanings, wanting his life to mean more than just being over.

For a long time afterward, Glier passed the time by writing songs and inspecting each melody with the feathered fellows by his windowsill. Instead of recording the album in a Los Angeles studio, as he did on his 2015 album If I Could Change One Thing, he decided to make Birds at home.

I thought that I should just stay close to the windows here, Glier says. I think this sort of happened by accident, but by the time I started recording the record, it was fall in New England, which is a profoundly beautiful death. The air is full of honesty, the sky is full of geese, and there is bright gorgeousness woven into the dying of things. It all seeped into the textures of this record.

Sometimes The Blues Is Just A Passing Bird

Like the Wheel, along with four other new songs, make up Sometimes The Blues Is Just a Passing Bird, an EP written entirely after The Tallest Man On Earth's latest release The Wild Hunt. Recorded during a quick break from touring in the summer of 2010, Like the Wheel is joined by The Dreamer, a soon-to-be-classic that songwriter Kristian Matsson performs on electric guitar. Memories & Birds

North Carolina based singer-songwriter Kenny Roby (6 String Drag) brings poetic art to well produced, stand alone, music pieces, in his new record, Memories and Birds. The list of contributing artists and number of well appointed instruments is noteworthy here, although Roby gets a lot of press for his very unique lyrics. Influenced by Randy Newman and Townes Van Zant, the philosophy that words in music don't always have to be upbeat, gives him permission to tell stories as dark and twisted as a T.S. Eliot meets Falkner poem. However, the score that flows behind the pieces is warm and inviting. The listener is held steady, as the imagery changes.

This 8 track collection is a monument of eclectic relativism, that expands as it plays. Each song is unique in its own right, but Roby's style comes through. The lyrics, honest and sometimes stark, also come around with a subtle moral of the story, that is positive and humane.

Memories & Birds was recorded between December 2011 and April 2012. Themes of Faulkner, O'Connor, Percy and McCarthy are noted as influence. I heard a range as wide as Tom Waits and Elvis Costello, but these artists are not that far from each other in conjuring up provocative subject lines. Where Kenny Roby stands out is the consistent honor of the lone soul, participant observer and quiet societal commentator.

    Strange Little Birds

    Etched D Side

Garbage have announced their sixth studio album and self-produced follow-up to 2012's Not Your Kind of People, Strange Little Birds.

In a press release, frontwoman Shirley Manson described the album's overlying principle as keeping it fresh, and relying on instinct both lyrically and musically. She also compared it to their 1995 self-titled debut, which the group reissued and took on tour for its twentieth anniversary last year. To me, this record, funnily enough, has the most to do with the first record than any of the previous records, she explained. It's getting back to that beginner's headspace.--Pitchfork

    Medicine For Birds

Singer and songwriter Angelica Garcia's journey down the rabbit hole began when she moved to Accomac, Virginia. Graduating from Los Angeles School for the Arts, the 17-year-old native Angeleno found herself living in a 200-year-old gothic brick home encircled by magnolia trees and under a blanket of bright stars. Her stepfather traded a career in the music industry for Episcopalian priesthood, and an Eastern Shore church would serve as his (and the family's) first congregation. Isolated and alone, Angelica locked herself in the parish house and fashioned a musical world that veers between ghostly gorgeous countrified blues and sly swamp Americana. With a childlike whimsy, quirky sense of humor, and dynamic delivery, it could easily soundtrack an apparitions' ball in some Faulknerian mansion. Upon first listen, it entranced Warner Bros. Records. Recorded by Charlie Peacock [The Civil Wars, Switchfoot] in Nashville, her full-length debut Medicine For Birds unlocks this world for everyone in 2016.

Mimicking Birds play lachrymose songs that synchronously evoke warm-heartedness and an overall compassion for life without coming off dilettante or sending you an invitation to a pity party. It's the band you find out about, listen to incessantly, want so much to keep a secret, but can't resist the urge to play for everyone you know.

Respighi - Birds - Brazilian Impressions (Speakers Corner)

It was Respighis fascination with ancient dances and songs that inspired him to write his bird suite. His great love for such music makes itself felt in every single movement of this work. While Respighi imbued each of the bird portraits with his very own sound colouring typical of his time, there is an original masterpiece by a Renaissance or Baroque composer lurking in the background.

The marchlike 'Intrada', based on a piece by Bernardo Pasquini (1637-1710), is further refined by a gradual building-up of the instrumental apparatus and comes to a final climax full of pomp and glory in which the brass are given prominence.

Ornithological elements are easily identified in the movements which follow: the doves cooing and billing is are underlined by a sighing, rhythmic base; the hen is heard clucking with a characteristic motif, and the song of the nightingale is brought to us by the flute over a mysterious murmuring on the low strings. The cuckoo is then heard, followed by a repeat of the initial theme, thus bringing to perfect completion 'Gli Ucelli' ('The Birds'), a colourful bird show which knows no rival in modern music.

The 'Impressioni brasiliano' ('Brazilian Impressions') is also a seldom heard jewel in both the concert hall and on record. Although the three-movement work has a subtle rhythm which runs throughout the work, it is far removed from the well-known 'Europeanised' samba adaptations which are so often heard. The suite is remarkable for its tender, impressionistic colouring which demands to be heard time and time again.

    Sweet Bird of Youth

An epic collection of garagey, fuzzed-out, indie rock tunes. There are a lot of strange, grandiose pop songs on here, featuring plenty of reverbed and bombastic distorted guitar, some of it even sounding like Bob Mould's Flying V on a couple of tracks. The songs are very layered, with several different things going on over the course of the song. It's quite an achievement that only four bandmembers were able to pull this off. An analog keyboard at one also brought into play, and the interesting aspect is the layers of distortion that blanket the sound it generates, resulting in an almost orchestral feel to the songs it presides over. With this Rock*A*Teens record, Merge Records has yet another great album to feature on its already magnificent roster.

    Stitt Plays Bird (Speakers Corner)

It is widely known that Sonny Stitt didn't want to be taken for Charlie 'Bird' Parker and changed from playing the alto to the tenor saxophone. Although false rumours pop up every now and then, the truth is that at the beginning of the 1940s Stitt independently developed the same be-bop licks as Parker without ever having heard him.
For Stitt Plays Bird Sonny had to unearth his old instrument and insert a new mouthpiece because Atlantic Records and their entrepreneurial president Ahmet Ertegun hoped for big sales figures. Which actually proved true.

One half of the modern jazz quartet provided the melodic and rhythmic basis for improvisations on eight 'hits' by Charlie Parker and one composition by his first employer Jay McShann. Added to this are the subtle, sensitive scatterings from Jim Hall and the emphatic beat from Richard Davis, both of which lend delicacy and pulse to the numbers. It's hard to recommend a special track, but Scrapple From The Apple is just awesome! All the numbers are based on standards - just which they are can be found in the informative liner notes by the be-bop expert Ira Gitler. Atlantic's logo "Full Dynamic Frequency Spectrum" is no longer a swindle in this new pressing and at last one can enjoy all nine titles in all their sonic glory.

This Speakers Corner LP was remastered using pure analogue components only, from the master tapes through to the cutting head. All royalties and mechanical rights have been paid.

This second full-length features contributions from both Antony's peers (Rufus Wainwright, Devendra Banhart) and heroes (Lou Reed, Boy George). Their involvement reflects both their admiration for Antony and his unique place in the contemporary arts community. Reed asked Antony to perform as part of the small ensemble on Reed's American and European tours, and he gave Antony a solo turn on the Velvet Underground classic Candy Says, an homage to another one of Antony's inspirations, Andy Warhol. In fact, the image adorning the cover of this album is Peter Hujar's striking 1974 photo, Candy Darling On Her Deathbed. Like some unsettling ghost relative of Jeff Buckley and Billie Holiday singing for all the fallen, this is tough, honest, uncompromising beauty and the next great voice in music - Mojo. If a great voice is often said to be an instrument, Antony's is a near orchestra, carrying extremes of emotion, great waves of suffering, tragedy, redemption, and joy - Metro.
