Every Damned record is different. And every one takes the band's signature sound in a new direction. The Black Album is no exception, perhaps the band's most ambitious of its excellent discography.
This double LP follow-up to the superb Machine Gun Etiquette (also available from DPR) is the fourth full length release by the British punk founding-fathers. The LP originally came out in July of 1980, making this its 24th anniversary.
This sprawling multi-faceted masterpiece is comprised of traditional punk rock, dark lyrical introspection, haunting sounds, and one side of hard-edged live recordings. It further explores the musical boundaries The Damned were clearly eager to avoid rather than embrace.
From the songs opener, ''Waiting for the Blackout,'' through ''13th Floor Vendetta'' (alluding to the movie The Abominable Dr. Phibes), to its side-length ''Curtain Call,'' The Damned prove why they are the most referential and chameleon-like of all the original punk innovators. And why they remain one of the best.LP1

BlackDierks Bentley has announced the details for his upcoming eighth studio album, Black. The follow-up to his acclaimed Riser is slated to drop in 2016.
The new album reunites the core creative team from Riser, including producer Ross Copperman and executive producer Arturo Buenahora, Jr. Riser set a new high-water mark for Bentley, earning him Grammy, CMA and ACM nominations and putting him in the headlining slot in arenas across the country. Black sees Bentley continuing to push himself creatively, expanding his sonic palette to include influences that "flourish on the edge of arena rock," according to a press release.
Black is a very personal album, taking its title from Bentley's wife Cassidy's maiden name, but it's intended to tell a universal story of "breakups, hookups, mess-ups and everything in between, shining a light on the things that happen after the sun goes down."
"It's a relationship album that covers the ups and downs of the journey and ends with some self-realization and evolvement," Bentley states. "The song 'Black' helps set all of that in motion at the top of the album by guiding you into the darkness and the shadows of the night. The same guy who sings 'Somewhere On a Beach' winds up growing and having enough perspective to sing something introspective like 'Different for Girls.' By the last song, he's taking a look back on love and life."
Black features more input from the female perspective than any previous Bentley album, including appearances from Maren Morris, Elle King, Natalie Hemby, Hillary Lindsey and Jessi Alexander.
"Having a female perspective on this record really made the album more than just music," Bentley says. "It makes it a conversation between a guy and a girl. Sometimes it's harmonious and sometimes it's two people clashing, but it's always there."
The album also features a guest shot from Trombone Shorty. Black is set for release on Capitol Records Nashville.

Listen to the first couple of cuts from the Black Lips' self-titled debut album and it sounds like you've uncovered yet another nuevo-garage rock band with an extra shot of punk rock attitude. All well and good, but let the album sink in and you realize these kids have a bit more up their sleeves -- the tres-wasted psychedelia of Freakout, the creepy blues crawl of Stone Cold and Down and Out, and the free-form dementia of You're Dumb prove these guys have been absorbing their influences from any number of less than wholesome sources.1 Throw It Away

Still the heaviest band on the planet, this time around there is a stronger emphasis on song structure and musicianship than on previous outings. No digital 'plug-ins' of any kind were used in this recording. All of the recording, processing, effects and mixing was done in the analog domain using tape and mostly vintage equipment.
''For all intents and purposes, this album is the black version of [The Beach Boys'] Smile-- at best, it will go down in the Smile/There's a Riot Goin' On/Miles Davis' On the Corner category.'' - Questlove
The prodigal son of the soul and funk canon, D'Angelo, is back! His ever-awaited third studio album, Black Messiah, is his first album since the critically acclaimed Voodoo, bringing to an end a 14-year hiatus. The album blends 70's jazz-funk and neo-soul.
Anyone who's been keeping up should be keen to the fact that the long-lusted over project was recorded in full analog, so the liner notes' PSA "For best results, listen at maximum volume" should be taken as a direct order for fervent D'lievers. And what better way to experience the gritty greatness of the release than a heavy-bodied vinyl pressing for the audio junkies?
The album features tracks co-penned by Kendra Foster (Parliament/Funkadelic) and Q-Tip (A Tribe Called Quest). It's also co-produced by Questlove (The Roots), bassist Pino Palladino (John Mayer Trio, The RH Factor), and drummer James Gadson (Bill Withers, Temptations, Beck, Jamie Lidell).

Black CelebrationWhether the band felt it was simply the time to move on from its most explicit industrial-pop fusion days, or whether increased success and concurrently larger venues pushed the music into different avenues, Depeche Mode's fifth studio album, Black Celebration, saw the group embarking on a path that in many ways defined their sound to the present: emotionally extreme lyrics matched with amped-up tunes, as much anthemic rock as they are compelling dance, along with stark, low-key ballads. The slow, sneaky build of the opening title track, with a strange distorted vocal sample providing a curious opening hook, sets the tone as David Gahan sings of making it through another black day while powerful drums and echoing metallic pings carry the song. Black Celebration is actually heavier on the ballads throughout, many sung by Martin Gore -- the most per album he has yet taken lead on -- with notable dramatic beauties including Sometimes, with its surprise gospel choir start and rough piano sonics, and the hyper-nihilistic World Full of Nothing. The various singles from the album remain definite highlights, such as A Question of Time, a brawling, aggressive number with a solid Gahan vocal, and the romantic/physical politics of Stripped, featuring particularly sharp arrangements from Alan Wilder. However, with such comparatively lesser-known but equally impressive numbers as the quietly intense romance of Here Is the House to boast, Black Celebration is solid through and through.

Black NightVery few bands come close to sounding like the metal legends Black Sabbath. The appropriately named Iron Man is one of the few who actually did, a very special band in the underground heavy metal scene that dared to re-create the dark/doomy sounds that Sabbath famously pioneered, but with their own twist.
Originally released in 1993 by Hellhound Records, Iron Man's classic debut album Black Night, marked the birth of one of the few bands who dove head first into the heavy rock sounds and dark atmospheres that Black Sabbath trailblazed.
The 7-song set is all about supersonic riffs and brutal heaviness, a dynamic that would even make Black Sabbath proud. Shadow Kingdom Records has now remastered the impossible-to-find but essential Black Night to make it sound as heavy as humanly possible which is scary in and of itself!1. Choices

Weather Report was one of the most influential jazz-fusion groups of their era, and outlasted many of its contemporaries such as Herbie Hancock's Headhunters and The Mahavishnu Orchestra.
Despite many personnel changes over its 16 year lifespan, they continued to create groundbreaking music under the guidance of Joe Zawinul.
Bandmembers Zawinul, Shorter and Moreira all played the bands of Miles Davis and at first Weather Report was a direct extension of Miles' 'In A Silent Way'/ 'Bitches Brew' period.
But when bassist Jaco Pastorius became a bandmember in 1976, Weather Report entered their most popular phase including the release of 'Black Market'.

Black OrigamiPlanet Mu are very excited to announce Jlin's long awaited second album "Black Origami." A percussion-led tour de force, it's a creation that seals her reputation as a unique producer with an exceptional ability to make riveting rhythmic music. "Black Origami" is driven by a deep creative thirst which she describes as "this driving feeling that I wanted to do something different, something that challenged me to my core. Black Origami for me, comes from letting go creatively, creating with no boundaries. The simple definition of origami is the art of folding and constructing paper into a beautiful, yet complex design. Composing music for me is like origami, only I'm replacing paper with sound. I chose to title the album Black Origami because like Dark Energy I still create from the beauty of darkness and blackness. The willingness to go into the hardest places within myself to create for me means that I can touch the Infinity."
Spirituality and movement are both at the core of "Black Origami", inspired largely by her ongoing collaborations with Indian dancer/movement artist Avril Stormy Unger whom she met and collaborated with at her debut performance for the Unsound festival - "There is a fine line between me entertaining a person and my spirituality. Avril, who collaborates with me by means of dance, feels the exact same way. Movement played a great role in Black Origami. The track Carbon 7 is very inspired by the way Avril moves and dances. Our rhythms are so in sync at times it kind of scares us. When there is something I can't quite figure out when it comes to my production, it's like she senses it. Her response to me is always You'll figure it out. Once I figure it out it's like time and space no longer exist."
Similar time shifting/folding/disrupting effects can be heard throughout the record - especially on "Holy Child" an unlikely collaboration with minimalist legend William Basinski. She also collaborates again with Holly Herndon on "1%", while Halcyon Veil producer Fawkes' voice is on "Calcination" and Cape Town rapper Dope Saint Jude provides vocals for "Never Created, Never Destroyed.1. Steve Walsh is known for his work as the frontman of the progressive rock band Kansas, from which he retired in 2014. On his new solo album Black Butterfly the influences from his past are brought together in some compact rock songs. Steve wrote the 14 songs of the album together with the Swedish musician Tommy Denander and the Christian rocker Jerome Mazza takes the lead vocals on three songs. The music goes from the sounds of Kansas (The Piper) to the beats of Warsaw and the political news on Billy Carbone Dead. Black Butterfly is a wonderful return to Walsh' studio work.
Whoever speaks out the name of Steve Walsh will directly think about the massive worldwide success of the American rock band Kansas. He was the lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist on their well-received albums Leftoverture and Point of Know Return as well as on their single hits Carry On Wayward Son and Dust in the Wind. one of the biggest albums of their career as it hit the top rungs of the jazz charts, plus major showings in the pop and
R&B charts. Black Market also introduced the world to the late great bassist legend Jaco Pastorius.
No stone is left unturned, as this masterpiece is loaded with hit after hit with smashes like Joe Zawinul's title

In 1969, the High Priestess Of Soul, Nina Simone, descended onto the stage of the Philharmonic Hall in New York to record her new live-album, Black Gold.
It became a legendary performance, with the first recording of the Civil Rights song 'To Be Young, Gifted And Black',
a song which is not addressed to white people primarily. Though it doesn't put you down in any way...it simply ignores you. For my people need all the inspiration and love that they can get.
Black Gold also contains a rendition of Sandy Denny's 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes,' in a minimalist arrangement that ends in an uplifting orchestration true to both the writer of the song and the performer. Throughout the entire performance Ms Simone keeps a regal, aloof and sometimes goofy composure, her monologues in between songs ushering the listener a little closer to her moving performance.
Her eclectic style takes us past a number of different music forms; past Soul and Gospel and Folk, Jazz and Broadway; her androgynous and distinctive timbre floats somewhere between melancholy and bliss, and yet we always feel that Ms Simone is taking us exactly where she wants us to go.
Overall, Black Gold is a poignant and touching album from the peak of her performing and recording period that should not be overlooked.1. Introduction

Black Beauty, Miles Davis At Fillmore West, was recorded on April 10, 1970 at Fillmore West, San Francisco, when Davis performed as the opening act for the Grateful Dead. The recording took place shortly after the release of Miles' classic album Bitches Brew. The album was released in 1973, originally in Japan only.
Black Beauty, a true jazz-rock album, captured one of Davis' first performances at a rock venue during the early stages of his electric period. At the concert, he led his band (saxophonist Steve Grossman, bassist Dave Holland, keyboardist Chick Corea, drummer Jack DeJohnette, and percussionist Airto Moreira) through one continuously performed set list.
The songs in the band's setlist were as followed: Directions, Miles Runs the Voodoo Down, Willie Nelson, I Fall In Love Too Easily, Sanctuary, It's About That Time, Bitches Brew, Masqualero, Spanish Key, and The Theme. They were performed as one continuous and uninterrupted piece of music, a practice Davis had begun in 1967. He later explained in his autobiography that performing these kinds of long musical suites without breaks allowed more space for improvisations in concert.

Black MetalIn its review of Dean Blunt's The Redeemer - which they later named their top album of 2013 - FACT called Blunt "the premier art prankster
of our time," while acknowledging his earnestness; Tiny Mix Tapes,
who would give the album the #2 spot in their best of the year rank- ings, praise the work for its liberating "short-circuiting of the bound- aries of taste and instilled critical response," while speaking to the
album's near-paradoxical emotional depth.
Blunt's newest odyssey, Black Metal, rides this tension between criti- cal detachment and mainlined human feeling, and in fact he climbs
ever-steeper theoretical heights just as his emotionally stark songs
become, at times, startlingly intimate.
A true multi-media vanguard, Blunt employs original instrumentation
along with elements of pastiche and his unique vocal performances
to create songs and recordings that are not only beautiful, but also tie
into his larger project that incorporates music, visual art, and the writ- ten word to play with identity, cultural signifiers, and artistic agency.
But Black Metal is above all a brilliant, majestic collection of songs, encompassing everything from hypnotic long-form experiments to
ballads almost disarming in their sweet simplicity, swirling equally
with fascinating sounds and fascinating ideas. Blunt's influences are
wide-ranging, from rock's underground pioneers (he quotes Sonic
Youth in interviews; the album leads with a Big Star sample), to neo- classical composers, to early indie pop (another track samples The
Pastels), to classic rock, hip-hop, and R&B. But rather than coldly
compiling them, Blunt brings the works and genres he draws from
into a new musical and cultural conversation.
In the cover story to September's issue of The Wire, Blunt explains
his relationship to his listeners: "Whatever is communicated through
the purity of intention is out of my hands because I didn't know
anything beyond that." With his newest, most accomplished, and
most vexing album, Blunt invites us to draw our own conclusions in
his expansive and fascinating world.1. Lush

Album Of The YearThe band's sound has evolved from the refined, quiet pop of the first full-length, Novena On A Nocturn, to the moody hooks of 2002's Black Out to the anthems of divorce and disillusionment found on the recent Lovers Need Lawyers EP. Black WidowNature counts the black widow spider amongst its most fascinating and dangerous anomalies. The female arachnid often devours its mate after copulation. It's both a delicate and dangerous predator. In This Moment isn't all that different from this enigmatic beast. Led by frontwoman Maria Brink, the Los Angeles hard rock outfit strikes with a seductive metallic bite on their aptly titled fifth full-length album, Black Widow.
Black Widow is a metaphor for this innocent young girl who gets infected with life, traumas, experiences, and the balance of light and darkness, explains Maria. She becomes this poised and powerful creature. That's the album.
We went into this with the title Black Widow, says lead guitarist Chris Howorth. It fits the image of Maria as this powerful heroine. If you think of the boys in the audience watching our stage show, she's like the black widow pulling them all in.
The record, the first for the band on Atlantic Records, picks up where the group's 2012 breakthrough, Blood, left off. That album saw In This Moment debut at #15 on the Billboard Top 200, their highest chart position to date, and eventually sold over 250,000 units in the U.S. alone. It also spawned the single Blood, which rose to #9 on the Mainstream Rock and Active Rock Songs charts. A sold out headline tour, HELLPOP, followed, as well as appearances at the Uproar Festival and Rock On The Range, and jaunts with Shinedown and Papa Roach. After the whirlwind of Blood subsided, Maria and Chris retreated to Las Vegas in February 2014 to begin working on what would become Black Widow with longtime producer Kevin Churko [Ozzy Osbourne, Five Finger Death Punch].LP1

Black Beauty, the never-before-released masterpiece by Arthur Lee's legendary psychedelic rock band Love, is available on 180-gram vinyl LP. Recorded in 1973 for the ambitious new label Buffalo Records,
the album remained unreleased when the company folded. Finally, after 39 years High Moon Records is honored to fulfill Arthur Lee's wish that Black Beauty be heard by music fans worldwide. Black Beauty is making its first-ever official release
in any format, anywhere! With unparalelled sound and state-of-the-art packaging, critics are hailing Black Beauty as an instant classic. Black Beauty is that rarest of rock artifacts: an unreleased,
full-length studio album, from an undisputed musical
genius. Black Beauty is the missing link in a catalog that includes Forever Changes, the classic 1967 Love album the New York Times called "one of the most affecting and beguiling albums of all time. With Black Beauty, Arthur Lee manages to combine searing 70's-rock with gorgeous melodies and stellar songwriting - topped off by his most distinctive, snarling, soulful vocals ever. With its wonderfully eclectic collection of songs, the
album offers Love fans a rare glimpse into a previously undocumented phase of Arthur Lee's fabled career, while shining a light for new fans to discover the unique genius that is the music of Arthur Lee and Love.
It's tempting to play what-if with Love's lost labor, Black Beauty, which was recorded in 1973 but shelved for nearly four decades. What if Buffalo Records hadn't gone out of business just prior to the album's release? What if Black Beauty had actually hit stores? What if it hadn't languished in limbo until years after Arthur Lee's death? Would it have stopped Love's slide into obscurity? Would it have signaled a comeback for the man who masterminded Forever Changes, still one of the most complex and compelling artifacts of 1960s Los Angeles? Would his life and career have played out any differently? Would we think of him today as something other than a cult artist, inspired as well as damned by his era?
It's difficult to imagine any answers to those questions, but it says a lot about Lee that the album even raises these what-ifs and coulda-beens. The very qualities that made him such a fascinating voice-- restlessness, excitability, paranoia, perfectionism, single-mindedness-- may have doomed any commercial prospects more than his notorious fear of travel ever did. After recording Forever Changes, he fired the band and hired new musicians to take their places. Every subsequent album featured a different line-up, although the changes seem based more on personality than on musical direction or ability. Never stagnant, Love was in constant flux, always in a state of development but never quite arriving. So the operative question becomes: Was this the version of Love that Lee had been working toward?
For Black Beauty-- which is finally seeing release via High Moon Records, although the reissue has been delayed for two years-- Lee assembled guitarist Melvan Whittington, bass player Robert Rozelle, and drummer Joe Blocker. This may be the hardiest and most muscular of Love's post-Changes rosters, with remarkable force and range. With crisp production by Paul Rothchild, best known for his work with the Doors, Love build from a potent blues rock foundation not dissimilar to that of Jimi Hendrix, but without the distracting shamanistic persona and guitar pyrotechnics. "Walk Right In" struts into country rock territory, rewriting Cannon's Jug Stompers 1929 hit into a plea for empathy, and "Beep Beep" attempts a sort of pop reggae, albeit not entirely convincingly.
On the whole, this particular line-up sounds perfectly rough and unrehearsed, generating a tense energy on "Skid" and "Stay Away" even as they suggest a band still figuring out exactly what they can do together. It's a strong album, but it's not another Forever Changes, whose accomplishments in retrospect were unrepeatable, or even another Four Sail. On the other hand, Lee wasn't aiming to craft something in that vein. Still, especially considering the professional setbacks he had faced in the years leading up to Black Beauty-- which includes being dropped by Elektra and shuffling through a series of independent labels-- Lee sounds engaged and invigorated, forgoing the bitterness that had rankled the band for a slightly more hopeful outlook. On stand-out "Can't Find It", he sings, "Every time I cry my heart out, and every time I play the fool, but there's gotta be something in this lonely world for me." The confession is all the more bittersweet for being capped with the line, "but I can't find it without you." It's ostensibly a love song, but could just as easily be addressed to his audience. His creative satisfaction relies on having a listener to complete the circuit, which makes this album's long shelf life all the sadder.
