Chaos And Creation In The Backyard

Released in 2005, Chaos and Creation in the Backyard, was instantly hailed as continuing a hot streak that included Flaming Pie, Run Devil Run and Driving Rain. Produced by Nigel Godrich (Radiohead, Beck) and featuring the singles "Fine Line" and the Grammy-winning "Jenny Wren," the album debuted at #6 on the Billboard chart. It remained on the charts for nearly half a year, while Paul mounted the massive 'US' Tour. In 2007, "Jenny Wren" won the Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, while the album was nominated in three other categories including Album of the Year. The 2018 edition of Chaos will make the album available on vinyl for the first time since its initial run as a 180-gram black vinyl LP.

    Creation

The garage-psychedelia explosion of the 1960s produced such a massive wave of incredible music that, four decades later, were still unearthing amazing unsung gems from this remarkable period. Thats the case with Creation, the lone album by the Druids of Stonehenge, which stands as a prime embodiment of the timeless sound and spirit of vintage garage-psych.

The New York-based Druids of Stonehengefrontman Dave Budge, guitarists Carl Hauser and Bill Tracy, bassist Tom Workman and drummer Steve Tindallexemplified both the surly essence of teen garage-punk and the experimental spirit of psychedelia. The band formed in 1965 as a scrappy, R&B-influenced teen combo in the Rolling Stones/Pretty Things mold. (This period is documented on the earlier Sundazed vinyl EP The Druids of Stonehenge.) By 1968, the Druids had embraced psychedelia, relocated to the West Coast and signed with the UNI label.

The Druids of Stonehenge unveiled their retooled sound with Creation, which revealed the quintet to be one of the toughest, most imaginative outfits of its era, maintaining both a forceful, earthy edge and an ethereal air of mystery. Those qualities were manifested in Budges snarling, Jaggeresque vocals and the bands tense, punchy playing, which elevated such memorable originals as Six Feet Down, Earthless and Pale Dream, as well as their distinctive reworkings of Bob Dylans Its All Over Now, Baby Blue, Loves Signed D.C. and Screamin Jay Hawkins I Put a Spell on You.

Despite its obvious quality, Creation was largely lost in the shuffle in its initial release, and the Druids of Stonehenge broke up the following year. In the decades since, the band and the album have gained immensely in stature and prestige among garage-psych aficionados and 60s devotees, with original copies of Creation becoming sought-after collectibles. Now, this legendary cult item is back in circulation on high-definition vinyl, mastered from the original analog tapes and featuring complete original cover art.

    Sanctuary

Now heavily influenced by the earth-shaking creations of two master musicians -John Coltrane and Ravi Shankar-the Byrds began recording their new single, Eight Miles High and Why, along with tracks for their upcoming album Fifth Dimension at Columbia Studios in Hollywood. Growing more confident by the day in their studio acumen and songwriting skills, the Byrds logged long nights of hypnotic in-studio jamming, then hammered the white-hot magma into songs that will live forever. McGuinn's solos soared as never before, his technique now fusing the familiar, melodic overtones of the Rickenbacker 12-string with a powerfully new staccato dissonance absorbed from the majestic saxophone of John Coltrane. Michael Clarke's drumming never sounded better, his Elvin Jones-like cymbal splashes and rolling-tom thunder driving the band like an atomic generator approaching critical mass. Chris Hillman's swooping bass lines took on a McCartney-esque timbre that filled in every corner of the canvas with bold, melodic strokes. But it was perhaps David Crosby, playing in a brashly percussive way no one had ever heard before from a rhythm guitarist, who best digested and interpreted the Eastern influences of the day: the ragas and talas of Ravi Shankar. Crosby's contribution to Fifth Dimensionwas as outspoken and defiant as the man, himself. Acreative zenith in the Byrds' career, these fascinating sessions deserve closer scrutiny than they've previously been afforded. Alternate instrumental takes and extended experimental workouts give essential insight here into the songs' final versions. Also included are early versions of songs before the addition of any studio sweetening-strings, percussion or sound effects. To top things off, we've included a small handful of unique finds that give a fly-on-the-wall glimpse into the creation of one of the most important records of our time.

First time on vinyl for all tracks! Annotation by Byrds' Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman and Kevin Kelley!

The Sanctuary spotlight shifts with volume IV to the Nashville sessions for the Byrds' landmark 1968 album Sweetheart of the Rodeo. Spurred on by new member Gram Parsons, formerly of the International Submarine Band, the Byrds traveled to Nashville to fashion the innovative country/rock blend that's been part of American culture ever since. Sanctuary IV collects all of Parsons' vocal takes for the first time, as well as other outtakes and rehearsals which document the creation of an album unlike any other.

    Modern Creation

For their fifth album, the Athens-bred/Nashville-based
power trio the Whigs wanted to find the exact
midpoint between raw and rehearsed. After more than
    a decade together-during which they've released four
critically lauded studio albums and toured constantly as
either headliners or openers for the likes of the Drive-By
Truckers, Kings of Leon, and MGMT-the three members
all agreed that they wanted to flex their muscles a bit:

When you listen to this album, you just don't get 'peace and love man'... Jack Casady

1968 was an amazing year for rock music, and San Francisco was the place to be for legendary classic rock bands like Jefferson Airplane.

After stunning success with three gold and platinum Lps under their belts, the classic quintet of Paul Kantner, Marty Balin, Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady, Grace Slick and Spencer Dryden delivered their masterwork Crown Of Creation. The Lp would become one of the most important albums of their long career featuring one of the most artistic and sobering covers of our time.

With a groundswell of support from the hip record buying public to major airplay at both underground FM and pop radio stations, the Lp was received incredibly well. Featuring two hit singles with Crown Of Creation and Greasy Heart, both tunes would go on to become rock music and social anthems for the turbulent 60's. Even more stellar album tracks like If You Feel, Lather and Triad (written with David Crosby) would all become standard Airplane classics in the years to follow.

"Jam bands" began with groups like Jefferson Airplane. Therefore it's no surprise to hear the wonderful workouts by dual guitarists Jorma Kaukonen and Paul Kantner along with Grace Slick and Marty Balin's power vocals plus the bass of Jack Casady and Spencer Drydens' drum work on this watershed release.

Friday Music is honored to present another exciting installment in our Jefferson Airplane 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series with their masterpiece Crown Of Creation Lp. Their fourth RCA album showcases a very hip band that has stood the test of time now for over five decades.

Mastered impeccably by Joe Reagoso (Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna/Grateful Dead), this first time audiophile vinyl release will become one of the more important albums in your classic rock collection. To enhance your Airplane listening pleasure, the Lp will be pressed for a short time on TRANSLUCENT ORANGE MARBLE vinyl at RTI, featuring new liner notes from Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady in a first time gatefold cover, as well as including the rare 12 x 24 poster of Brumus and photo insert, which truly make this an even more rewarding event for the fans.

Rhyme Pays is the debut album of Ice-T, originally released in 1987.

As a musician, Ice-T played a major role in the creation of the gangsta incarnation of hip-hop music and was a colossus of the West Coast hip-hop scene, despite his East Coast, greater New York, origins. Though his music displays a political consciousness, like the indictments of racism that were a hallmark of seminal hip-hop group Public Enemy, it also is nihilistic as befits a chronicler of street life. The charismatic Ice-T has also achieved success as an actor in movies and on TV. He plays Detective Odafin Tutuola on the TV series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

    You Are My Sunshine

    Black & Grey Splatter Vinyl

Something dreadful happened with Jamey Johnson, Twiggy Ramirez & Shooter Jennings created this piece of music. It can only be described as a sonic journey, the first of which takes one of the most well-known songs and reinvents it to possibly it's true meaning using much ritual when it comes to the creation and conjuration of the music. Side B is a mystical sound collage that takes the listener on a dark ride into the subconscious using many methods of sub sonic sound synthesis.

Blue Giant is the creation of Kevin and Anita Robinson, better known as Portland indie-pop darlings Viva Voce. The Robinson's new band features Chris Funk (The Decemberists), Evan Railton (Swords) and Seth Lorinczi (The Golden Bears). On their self-titled debut, produced by Kevin, Blue Giant combine the traditional sounds of American music, country, bluegrass and folk, with driving, straight-ahead rock n roll. The 12 tracks on the album, all written by Kevin and Anita, showcase that versatility from the classic country feel of "Lonely Girl," to the melodic guitars in "Clean The Clock," to the mellow, deceptively simple "Gone For Good" which features Sleater-Kinney's Corin Tucker.

American Goldwing is Sub Pops third full-length release with Portland, OR's Blitzen Trapper and the bands sixth full-length overall. On American Goldwing, Blitzen Trapper let their loves and influences; hard guitar rock, country picking and pawn-shop Casio aplomb, hang out for all to see.

The album is also the bands first foray into direct, outside influence in the creation of a record, with mixing by Tchad Blake and co-production by Gregg Williams. From crossover, to proto grindcore, to subtle oi influences; there's something for every AGNOSTIC FRONT fan. Executive produced by Jill Scott and J.R Hutson (Pharell, Faith Evans), The Light Of The Sun features appearances by rappers Paul Wall, Doug E. Fresh, and Eve and traverses the rocky terrain of love, longing and loss.

The first single, So in Love, is a duet with Anthony Hamilton. When Scott first heard the track, a soul-filled melody that evokes the legendary pairing of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, she was moved to tears.

This music came about in a very organic way, says Scott reflecting on the free-style jam sessions that resulted in the creation of The Light Of the Sun, which drops in June of 2011. I've enjoyed the recording process more that I ever have before.

    Selenography

Originally released in 1999, Rachels fourth album is a collection of songs that have been staples of the bands live shows and songs that arose from the freedom of having a home studio. A primary factor in the creation of this record was that for the first time, all three songwriters lived in the same city; Christian Frederickson having joined Rachel Grimes and Jason Noble in Louisville, KY. The first session at Chicago Recording Company in July of 1997 was a clearing of the decks, recording a backlog of songs the band had been performing live for years but hadnt put to tape. A year of touring and songwriting preceded the bands return to the studio, this time at Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls, MN. Four days of seclusion in the wilderness produced a group of songs which the band brought home to Louisville. Recording at home allowed the band to experiment with integrating live and electronic textures.

    A Dramatic Turn Of Events

The mighty Dream Theater return stronger than ever with their most powerful album yet, A Dramatic Turn Of Events. Featuring On The Backs Of Angels, the much-anticipated platter marks new drummer, Mike Mangini's recorded debut and will be released via Roadrunner Records.

I'm incredibly psyched with the way this album came out and can't wait to share it with everybody, guitarist John Petrucci, who also serves as the producer for A Dramatic Turn of Events, said.

We have poured our hearts and minds into the creation of this album, keyboardist Jordan Rudess offered. All the life changing events that surrounded us before, as well as during the whole process, fueled our desire to dig deep within ourselves and create the best music we possibly could.

Vocalist James LaBrie said, The new songs and sound has never been so spirited or rejuvenating. I cannot wait for every one of our fans to sink their audio senses into this batch of tunes.

    Not Available

While there are a million stories about The Residents, one of the more intriguing concerns the recording of their second LP, Not Available. Early in the career of the band, the theory of obscurity was introduced to them by the German avant-guardist, N. Senada. The plan called for the creation of complete projects that were literally not intended to be heard by anyone other than its creators. The Residents realized the truth in this ideal: that music really was difficult to record without considering the audience. They thought the experience gained by completing such a project would prove worthwhile toward achieving an independent attitude toward music. Not Available was completed in 1974 and stored. Several years later, in 1978, The Residents were severely over schedule on their opus, Eskimo. The record company pulled Not Available from the masters room and released it. Surprisingly, The Residents were not upset by this fact since it in no way violated their original intent.

    Your Blues

Your Blues is a stunning collection of songs and craftsmanship. Bombastic and bold at times, quiet and
soothing at others, Your Blues has an almost theatrical quality that informs the compositions. Originally released on CD in 2004, Destroyer's sixth studio album is now widely available on vinyl, as the December installment in the Merge25 reissue series.

Recorded with the production duo JC/DC (aka David Carswell and John Collins) -- who aided in the creation of
Destroyer's first three discs -- Dan Bejar ditches the band format he used for 2002's This Night with tremendous results. Fusing a dramatic vocal style akin to that of David Bowie in the 1970s with 1980s studio achievers like Microdisney and Prefab Sprout, Your Blues is regularly breathtaking.

Brasileiro won the 1992 Grammy Award for Best World Music Album. The album was released at June 17 in 1992.

Mendes went back to the taproots of his heritage, calling upon a plethora of explosive tracks from L.A. sessionmen and give the production a finished sheen. Combining Forro and Samba Reggae with Indiado stomps and shouts, What Is This is a romping Bahian take on Hiphop and grafts Portuguese vocals onto a swinging American Funk groove. And the unusual ¾-meter samba Pipoca is the creation of do-everything mystery man Hermeto Pascoal.

Mendes draws upon the giants and comers of Brazilian songwriting like Ivan Lins, Gilberto Gil, Joao Bosco, Carlinhos Brown, and Guinga. Mendes vocal blend is Gracinha Leporace who sounds more vibrant than ever. Bassist Sebastian Neto also returns to the Mendes fold.

Khalid has been surrounded by music his entire life. He grew up in a military family, his mother is a singer with the Army and he was introduced to music at an early age. Khalid spent most of his childhood in Germany before moving to Watertown, NY for High School. The summer going into his senior year of High School, Khalid's family was ordered to relocate to El Paso, TX. By 18-years-old, Khalid, who is classically vocal trained, had drawn on his experiences with moving often and the unique experience of growing up having lived in two continents and parlayed them into the creation of his viral smash, "Location" which helped him to land a major label deal with Right Hand Music Group/RCA Records. Khalid released "Location" before his high school graduation and it garnered over 1.52 million plays in less than two months, along with critical praise from music tastemakers such as Pigeons & Planes, Earmilk, and more.
