Popular ManipulationsIt's not uncommon for musicians to grow and evolve between releases-but even by those standards, the Districts' Popular Manipulations is stunning. The Pennsylvania-borne band's third full-length represents an exponential leap in sound and cohesion, an impressive and impassioned burn with a wide scope that threatens to swallow everything else surrounding it. Perhaps it's a clichÉ to say so, but while listening, you might find yourself wondering why people don't make indie rock like this anymore.
The total electric charge of Popular Manipulations is just the latest evolution for the impressively young quartet, whose founding members-vocalist/guitarist Rob Grote, bassist Connor Jacobus, and drummer Braden Lawrence-have known each other since attending grade school together in the Pennsylvania town of Lititz. After deciding to form a band in high school, the Districts gigged hard in the tri-state area, releasing a slew of promising material (including the rootsy 2012 debut Telephone) before catching the eye of venerable indie Fat Possum. 2015's A Flourish and a Spoil found the band refining their embryonic sound with veteran producer John Congleton (St. Vincent, Kurt Vile)-and looking back on that release, there are glimmers of Popular Manipulations in chrysalis form to be found on it, hints of the fence-swinging anthemic sound they'd soon make wholly their own.
After touring behind A Flourish and a Spoil, Grote began playing with different ideas in his own songwriting by making demos at a prolific pace. We knew that we wanted to change some things musically, so we were trying to come up with as many songs as possible to narrow the direction we wanted to take the material, he states. In total, they ended up with 50 song ideas, and so they were off to LA in May of 2016 with new guitarist Pat Cassidy in tow to log more recording time with Congleton, with four of Popular Manipulations' songs coming out of the sessions.
We have a lot of overlapping tastes and preferences for how things are made, Grote gushes about working with the notably reliable studio wizard-but acceding all credit to Congleton (who also handled the record's mixdown) would be shortchanging the Districts themselves, who went on to self-produce the remainder of the record in Philadelphia with engineer Keith Abrams. Something we took from working with Congleton was ideas on arranging songs, Grote explains, and they certainly learned a lot: Popular Manipulations is a raucous and impressively thick-sounding album, overflowing with toothy melodies that pack a serious punch.
The distinctly intense sound of Popular Manipulations-charging guitars, thunderous drumming, and Grote's searing vocals-was brought on by a few cited influences, from shoegaze's aggressive swirl to the Velvet Underground's impeccable drone-rock sound. There's a distinctly Canadian flavor to this brand of indie rock, too; Spencer Krug's anthemic, lushly inscrutable work in Wolf Parade and his defunct Sunset Rubdown side project comes to mind, as does 2000s Toronto barnburners the Diableros' overlooked 2006 gem You Can't Break the Strings in Our Olympic Hearts.
But don't mistake easy comparisons for a lack of originality: on Popular Manipulations, the District are in a lane entirely their own, exploring lyrical themes of isolation and abandonment in a way that ups the music's already highly charged emotional quotient. Capable finds Grote turning his focus to the ruinous aftermath of divorce, and Before I Wake is, in his words, About coming to terms with being isolated or alone-even though we have a whole group of voices singing the whole time. Grote explains that even the title of the record touches on these universal concerns: It hints at how people use each other, for good or bad, and the personal ways you manipulate yourself and other people in day-to-day interactions.
For such weighty thematic material, though, Popular Manipulations is purely life-affirming rock music, bursting with energy that cuts through the darkness of the world that surrounds us. We're a much better distillation of who we wish to be as a band, Grote reflects on the journey that has led the Districts to this point. We've figured out how to distill the things we've been trying to accomplish as a band, musically and lyrically. We've always viewed making music as something we're trying to do better the whole time. A Flourish And A SpoilThe Districts deliver raw, rollicking power on 'A Flourish And A Spoil' out February 10 on Fat Possum Records. John Congleton (St. Vincent, Angel Olsen, Swans) produced/engineered/mixed the album at Seedy Underbelly Studio (formerly Pachyderm Studio) in Cannon Falls, MN. The resulting 10 tracks capture the boisterous live performances from the quartet, who are all between 19 and 20 years old. The Guardian UK says, The Districts will be your new favourite band.
The four-piece band formed in 2009 while the members were still in high school in Lancaster County, PA. The Red Light DistrictThe Red Light District is the fifth studio album from Def Jam recording artist Ludacris. An Argument With MyselfIn the symbology of Jens Lekmans songbook, motion is a means to stave off insanity or succumb to it and the songs on the An Argument With Myself EP deal with many types of movement, both big and small, from why he moved to Melbourne to the societal change/movement in his old hometown of Gothenburg to simple map directions.
The opening song and title track begins with this excellent Jens archetype, recounting an inner battle while walking home through the central business district of Melbourne, Australia. While on its face, Waiting For Kirsten seems to trace an ultimately futile odyssey to track down Kirsten Dunst while she films in Gothenburg, its really an attempt to work out the complex relationship one has with ones hometown. The comfort and disappoint of whats changed, and what seems to never change. Alternately, the horn driven New Directions brings a slightly manic roadmap of directions to any place but here and any time but now. The songs are witty, literal, and impeccably location-specific, and theyre all heading somewhere as a means to either go crazy or keep from doing so.
With more fractured textures that combine horns, flutes, string swells and arpeggiated guitars, the opening of the EP finds Jens in constant state of transition, musically, as well. The Lost TapesThe discovery of WITCHFYNDE's Lost Tapes illuminates a fascinating missing link in the history of British heavy metal. In the lull between the Purple/Zeppelin/Sabbath revolution and the angry charge of punk rock and NWOBHM, in the East Midlands county town of Derby, four lads came together to create a tentatively progressive and intriguing new sound, and get heads banging in boozers all over the Peak District. Recording a 40-minute demo of original material in 1975, WITCHFYNDE were the unwitting spearhead of the movement that was still a long way off being dubbed the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, and from the plaintive, spacey opening of Grimoire, this earliest of artefacts is rather more nuanced and versatile than the hallowed acronym NWOBHM traditionally suggests.
Even though they raised many tavern roofs in the mid-late 70s, this isn't your standard thick-eared pub metal. On this recording you can hear these young musicians enjoying playing their first songs together, sharing varied influences and building mystical atmospheres out of extended jams with quirky interplay and a relaxed delivery. Behind the odd forgivable bum note, missed beat or overstretched solo you sense the exploratory zeal of four music-obsessed friends casting their net wide: from the sprightly power-pop groove of Madam Noname to the creepy proto-doom of Halfway, with Pastiche somehow English gothic country rock and Slow Down having the feel of an epic melancholy folk ballad.

Teatime AssortmentSince before he was even able to play an instrument, Martin Newell was
messing around with home-recordings. Having grown up in the Far East, Newell
returned to his home of England at age 13 with just a little 3-inch spool
tape-recorder and his first guitar. At age 14 he wrote his first song, not even
knowing any chords. His song writing continued through is teens and into his
20s, when he purchased a Sony reel-to-reel recorder and 12 string guitar. It
is this early songwriting that led him working with a wide variety of musicians,
recording in beautiful studios and forming his many projects such as Cleaners
from Venus and Brotherhood of Lizards. But it was this early songwriting and
recording that led him to find that he was happiest when recording by himself,
with minimal equipment. As Newell often says, "Actually, I preferred the demos".
Having upgraded himself from reel-to-reel to a Tascam Pocketstudio and
digitizing some of his archaic recording knowledge, Newell set out to
begin home recording again. The tracks on this collection run from 2010
to mid 2014. Some are recordings loosely based on movie themes and
soundtracks for imaginary films. Some are instrumentals from a collection
called The Late District, while others are from a recent album Return to
Bohemia, which saw a small release in England. This recent resurgence
in creative strength, along with the success and newfound popularity of
Cleaners from Venus, have all led up to Teatime Assortment. Think of it as a
"Best of New Newell". A true wordsmith, Newell himself has put simply why
one might be compelled to take a listen here: "If you're the sort of person

While there are no concrete themes associated with the album,
Chaz says he can imagine all of these songs playing in the
middle of the brilliantly lighted and busy Ginza district in Tokyo.
Touchstones like Timbaland, Mr. Oizo, and Daft Punk, and
contemporaries such as Motor City Drum Ensemble offered
inspiration, but most influential on the making of the album was
the sage advice of a design icon. "My favorite graphic designer,

Margaret Chardiet was born and raised in New York City She has been making
power electronics/death industrial music under the name Pharmakon for five
years. As a founding member of the Red Light District collective in Far Rockaway,
ny she has been a figurehead in the underground experimental scene since the age
of Seventeen. She points out that the environment there amongst so many other
experimental artists (amongst them Yellow Tears & Haflings) inspired her to keep
making increasingly challenging work. She describes her drive to make noise music
as something akin to an exorcism where she is able to express, her "deep-seated
need/drive/urge/possession to reach other people and make them FEEL something
[specifically] in uncomfortable/confrontational ways." Engineered by Sean Ragon
of Cult of Youth at his self-built recording studio Heaven Street, Abandon is
Pharmakon's first proper studio album and also her first widely distributed release.
Unlike other experimental projects, Pharmakon does not improvise when performing or recording. She is concise and exact; each song/movement is linear with a
clear trajectory. Perhaps more than any other style of music, noise is a genre almost
exclusively dominated by male performers. Spin Magazine is apt to point out that
her, "perfectionism might explain why her recordings are few and far between-
a rarity in a scene where noise bros want to puke out hour after endless hour of
stoned basement jams into a limitless stream of limited-edition tapes. Her music
may be as cuddly as a trepanning drill, but it's also just as precise: She glowers in

She dreamt of writing, arranging, performing and producing an album that would be as treasured by someone else, and hopefully inspire them in the same way.
The journey from then until now has not only given her more years, but more confidence, more experience of life, the courage to let the music express when words seem too restrictive. The name Blue Roses is encompassing; it is more than just one person and their sole aspirations, it is what happened in making the album, this process gave the need for another, more representative name. Blue Roses is the story, with Laura Groves as the protagonist. Included is a cast of family members to play instruments and a choir of firm friends, acquaintances and perfect strangers gathered together in a caf? to help. A small amount of money and a little faith was stretched with the benevolence and enthusiasm of those who stood at each door. From recording in living rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms in various houses, to recording a Steinway in a local piano shop (a millionaire, who despite having paid a five-figure sum for the concert grand piano, was enchanted enough by the story and the music to allow Laura to record with it before it was moved to entertain guests his Lake District hotel). The equipment graciously bought and generously lent, (most of which was older than Laura herself, some of which was of pensionable age) put her on a sonic par with her idols and instilled in her a romance which translated through the Neumann, the Gibson and Wurlitzer, the Neve. The valves, the plates, the springs, the tape, transformers and circuitry are as musical as the instruments and voices passing through them, and are part of the story, the color between the lines.1. NVMLike a fluorescent-lit snack-aisle oasis in some desolate interstate road stop, brimming with Skittles and limited-edition Sno Balls, Tacocat's Easter-egg-hued pop-punk-pop is bubblegum-sticky with hooks, bound to brighten up the most drab stretch of bummer backroad.
The band's four-person, seven-layer-burrito came together organically: Lelah Maupin (drums) and Eric Randall (guitar) met in their native Longview, WA-two hours south of Seattle, the very town that Green Day named their breakout debut single after. Lelah's family room was wallpapered with framed Magic Eye posters, hence Stereogram, the cross-eyed love letter to that bizarre '90s optical fad. She met lanky Eric while both worked at Safeway, wearing the chain's distinctive navy aprons before breaking north to Seattle. Eric's band The Trashies practiced and played in the basement of the 24/7 House in the Central District, where Long Beach, CA native Bree McKenna (bass) was living, amongst the dust, boxes, and spiders. Lelah met Butte, MT native Emily Nokes (voice, tambourine) in one excruciatingly early/boring graphic design class, slipping her a doodled-upon note; she soon noticed Emily's big voice while she sang along with R. Kelly on the radio. Emily and Bree hit it off one sloshy night at the Comet. Eric impressed Emily with his reenactments of scenes from Anaconda. Sometime around 2007, via countless raucous house party shows, the legend of Tacocat was born.
The foursome would quickly make a name for themselves with their simply energizing power pop, drawing on classic Northwest energy with an uncommonly upbeat, surfy swag that could only come from gray skies and hydroponic sunshine. Their sly and unabashed '90s revivalism has, in the past, found the band pondering Evan Dando and Waterworld-and Bree herself explains finding about riot grrrl via Napster and Julia Stiles in 10 Things I Hate About You. They've described themselves variously as Feminist sci-fi and Equal parts Kurt and Courtney; oh well, whatever NVM.
NVM-Tacocat's second full-length album and first for Hardly Art, opens up like some mystery shoebox, wistful, instantly nostalgic: snapshots of mortifying exes (You Never Came Back) and sketchy party situations (Party Trap), maybe a postcard with an alien smoking a joint. Cigarette cellophane-wrapped weed nugs, pain pill crumbs and wrapped tampons (all the girls are surfing the wave, surfing the crimson wave today"), all serve as a roadmap through Tacocat's bong-ripped reminiscences, scenarios all-too familiar and hilariously improbable. There's the notoriously inconsistent #8 Metro line (F.U. #8) and the accountability-allergic, black-clad brick-heavers of This Is Anarchy. The protagonist of Psychedelic Quinceañera-based on Bree-just wants to dance with rainbows, mind-expansion style, instead of having to wear a frilly dress in front of her whole family. Emily daydreams of a Bridge to Hawaii, where even the destitute could walk their asses to paradise-before being snapped out of it by cat-calls from construction workers, business dads, and drunk hobos (Hey Girl); sweaty jerks telling her that she should smile!
NVM all that, though: you should, and will, smile-either a wry little corner-lifter or a big ear-to-ear equator-and shake what's yours, when you hear the whippet-smart latest album from the world's favorite palindromic band. Text a friend.

Collector's Edition Boxed Set Features Previously Unheard Concert Recordings From 1966 On CD And Vinyl
Includes 8 x 10 Prints Of Unseen Photos And Replica Memorabilia
Before The Doors took the music scene by storm in 1967, they were the house band at the London Fog, a Sunset Strip dive bar located just footsteps away from the world famous Whisky a Go Go, the future home of many of the band's most legendary performances. The Doors will open a virtual time capsule in December with LONDON FOG 1966, a Collector's Edition boxed set that features unearthed audio recorded at the club in May 1966. Previously unreleased and not even known to exist until recently, this marks the earliest recordings of the band and finds the quartet mixing blues covers with early versions of Doors originals.
LONDON FOG 1966 will be available as an individually numbered limited edition of 18,000 copies from Rhino/Bright Midnight Archives. Presented in a lift-top package designed to look like a vintage storage box, the set features seven songs on both CD and a 10-inch record that's made to resemble a test pressing. Noted Doors engineer Bruce Botnick recently mastered the audio for this collection.
Along with the unreleased music, the set is packed with memorabilia and historic liner notes to provide a true time capsule of that fabled night at the London Fog, including a poster, the set list handwritten by John Densmore, a program for the Royce Hall UCLA student film screening, plus a London Fog coaster. There are also liner notes included from Sunset Strip legend Ronnie Haran-Mellen, who was the talent booker at the Whisky a Go Go. Haran-Mellen saw The Doors live for the first time at the London Fog and then booked them as the permanent house band at the Whisky, leading to the band's signing to Elektra and meteoric rise to superstardom.
Also contributing liner notes is Nettie Peña, one of the lucky few to be in attendance at the London Fog for this fabled show. Peña was a pivotal force in this release coming together as she captured the audio on a ¼" reel to reel recorder, which was the property of the Los Angeles Unified School District. Her father was a teacher for LAUSD and let her borrow the recorder to take to the show. Peña also photographed the band that evening and five black and white 8x10 reprints of these unpublished photos are included in the Collector's Edition, featuring a fresh-faced Morrison on a cramped stage with John Densmore, Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek.
The show featured on LONDON FOG 1966 took place the same year that The Doors recorded their eponymous debut. Released in January 1967, the album would become one of the most influential in rock history. Like many of the band's early concerts, the show captured on this deluxe set reflects the group's deep love for the blues with covers of standards like Muddy Waters' "Rock Me" and "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man." The set also includes raw performances of "Baby, Please Don't Go" (Big Joe Williams), "Don't Fight It" (Wilson Pickett), and "Lucille" (Little Richard).
During their residency at the London Fog, The Doors frequently worked out new songs on stage that would eventually appear on various studio albums. At this show, the band played two originals. The first, "Strange Days," would become the title track for the band's second studio album, which also came out in 1967. This is one of the only known live recordings of this track. The other Doors original, "You Make Me Real," wasn't officially released on a studio album until Morrison Hotel in 1970.
"To hear 'Strange Days,' that came out on their second album, in almost final shape so early on was truly amazing," says Jac Holzman, the President of Elektra Records who signed The Doors to their first recording contract.

Bunkered down in their rehearsal space inside an old town hall in Glasgows south-west district of Govan, Adele Bethel (vocals, guitar, piano), Scott Paterson (vocals, guitar), Ailidh Lennon (bass, mandolin, piano) and David Gow (drums, percussion) had the task of following up the denser, busier guitar-rock of 2008s Bernard Butler-produced This Gift.
Mirror Mirror is a very different beast to its predecessor. A slow burning sensation, a wiry, raw, sensual injection of primal monochrome rock, it is not only thrillingly contemporary but unique by 2011 standards.
The band reached back to their own past, namely 2006s The Repulsion Box and the bands 2004 mini-album debut Love The Cup for inspiration. As Scott Paterson observes, We sound better when were more minimal. We wanted everything on the new album to be necessary, no added fluff, and only recording on 16-track.
