    The North (Awaiting Repress)

For more than a decade now, Stars have been winning over audiences with their sensitive, dreamy indie pop tunes. On September 4, the band will release their latest full-length offering, The North, via their own Soft Revolution Records imprint in Canada and via ATO Records south of the border. For fans who just can't wait until the disc is in stores, you can hear the whole thing now on Exclaim.ca.

The 12-song album was co-produced by Stars along with Marcus Paquin (Arcade Fire, Little Scream) and Graham Lessard (Plants & Animals, Young Galaxy) at RCA Victor Studios in Montreal. It is Stars' sixth album overall and follows 2010's The Five Ghosts.

Fans of Stars' past work are sure to find more material to enjoy here, since tracks like The Theory of Relativity and Hold On When You Get Love and Let Go When You Give It show the band at their most dreamy and pop-oriented, while the charging Backlines is slightly more rocking but will all Stars' signature sweetness.

    Ghosts (Awaiting Repress)

Female London-based duo Smoke Fairies are releasing Ghosts, a vinyl album compiling their first two singles and an EP, being issued by 453 Music.

Their unique interweaving of ethereal vocal harmonizing and swampland guitars draws inspiration from sources as seemingly contradictory as the rolling hills of the pair's native Sussex and the foothills of the Appalachian mountains; the smoky jazz cafes of New Orleans to the sunny meadows of the English countryside... try to pigeonhole the Smoke Fairies? You might as well try to capture a storm in a whisky bottle.

This music wells up from deep in their souls, sometimes dark, sometimes delicate and unmistakably shaped by a distinctly British sensibilities and filled with a delicious tension -- at once warm and haunting; soothing and unsettling. Following in the footsteps of artists like the Velvet Underground, Led Zeppelin (on their respective third albums), and Jefferson Airplane they've overhauled their musical roots and brought something new to the world. ''Frozen Heart,'' for instance, is a paean to love whose influences span five decades and all manner of traditional genres, putting all those the pieces together in a strikingly fresh and original way.

Now with four very collectible singles under their belts, (including a one-off on Jack White's label Third Man Records) they are established in the UK, and are selling out their own shows in the capital. In 2010, the North America beckons again as they release Ghosts and plan on extensive touring. They recently played at SXSW 2010 in Austin, TX in March and will begin touring North America May of this year, supporting Laura Marlin.

    Among The Ghosts (Pre-Order)

Lucero's ninth studio album, Among the Ghosts, is their first for noted Nashville indie label Thirty Tigers. It was recorded and co-produced with Grammy-winning engineer/producer and Memphis native Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell, Margo Price, Drive by Truckers) at the historic Sam Phillips Recording Service, the studio built by the legendary producer after outgrowing his Memphis Recording Service/Sun Studio.

Recorded primarily live as a five-piece, Among the Ghosts eschews the Stax-inspired horns and Jerry Lee Lewis-style boogie piano featured on some of the band's past recordings for a streamlined rock & roll sound that pays homage to their seminal influences as it seeks to push that legacy into the future. For a band who carried the torch of the alt-country movement back in the 90's and helped pave the way for what is now called Americana, Lucero have re-discovered what inspired them in the first place. The sound is more their own and at the same time not exactly like anything they've done before. This is a band settling into their craft. The 10-song disc's title is both a tribute to the spirits which roam the streets of their fabled city, as well as the hard road the determinedly independent band set out on 20 years ago. The band played around 200 shows per year for many of those 20 years.

With a nod to his younger brother Jeff Nichols, an acclaimed filmmaker whose movies include Loving, Mud, Take Shelter, Midnight Special, and Shotgun Stories; Nichols has written songs that are cinematic short stories, steeped in Southern gothic lore. There are nods to regional authors like Flannery O'Connor and Faulkner, as well as newer writers like Larry Brown (Big Bad Love, Fay), Ron Rash (The Cove, The World Made Straight), and William Gay (The Long Home).

As the first album he's written since his marriage and the birth of his now two-year-old daughter Izzy, Nichols approached the task as a narrator rather than in first person. It's a dark palette that includes tales of a haunting ("Among the Ghosts"), a drowning ("Bottom of the Sea), a reckoning with the devil ("Everything has Changed"), a divorce ("Always Been You"), and a shoot out ("Cover Me"). And that's just Side A. Side B is a letter from a battlefield ("To My Dearest Wife"), a crime ("Long Way Back Home"), a straight-out rocker ("For the Lonely Ones") and even a spooky spoken-word cameo from actor Michael Shannon, who has appeared in every one of Nichols' brother's films. The song's title "Back to the Night" references a line from Nick Tosches' Jerry Lee Lewis biography, Hellfire. In addition, there's a song Nichols wrote for his brother's movie Loving, which appeared in the film and on the soundtrack, re- recorded for Among the Ghosts with the whole band.

"You could also say there's a rescue, a getaway, a survival story and a middle finger to Satan himself," laughs Nichols. "It's all in your perspective."

Several songs juxtapose going off to battle with a rock & roll band's endless touring, shifting time periods like the spirits which haunt the album, the happiness of domestic bliss undercut with fears of loss and the specter of mortality. Among the Ghosts simultaneously reprises the past and looks to the future, while being firmly anchored in the present.

Musically, the band highlights range from co-founding member Brian Venable's Dire Straits-meets-War on Drugs guitar pyrotechnics in "Bottom of the Sea" and "Cover Me" to the Springsteen vibe of "For the Lonely Ones," Rick Steff's skeletal piano lines on "Always Been You," John C's bass lines in "Everything Has Changed" and "Long Way Back Home," and drummer Roy Berry's dynamic shifts from the powerful and brutal title track "Among the Ghosts" to the marching drive of "To My Dearest Wife" and the subtlety of "Loving." Throughout, Nichols' bourbon-soaked growl has become even more distinctive and commanding.

Among the Ghosts offers a timeless perspective on Lucero's distinctive sound. The lyrics could've been written 200 years ago or yesterday. Representing a new South compared to the one that's been mythologized, Lucero have formulated their own ideas and culture which, in some cases, contradicts what came before them (no Confederate flags), but also updates and reconsiders those traditions in a new light.

"I think we've tried to remake this place that we love and cherish in our own fashion. We are very proud of where we are from and we've spent the last 20 years trying to bring a bit of our version of home to the rest of the world It may have taken 20 years, but everything has fallen in place right where it needs to be," acknowledges Nichols. "There were some dark days in those middle years, but we've learned how to do this and survive. We still write heartbreak songs, but now, with a family at home, it's a whole new kind of heartbreak."

Among the Ghosts lays out that new territory with alacrity, as Lucero shines their Morning Star, burning just as brightly, if not more so, 20 years later. As one of the album's song titles so aptly puts it, "Everything Has Changed," but one thing hasn't Lucero's music remains more vital than ever.

    Intensity Ghost

Intensity Ghost is the first studio release by Chris Forsyth with the Solar Motel Band (the new
group formed in the wake of his critically acclaimed 2013 solo record Solar Motel) and it's a
career-defi ning statement of purpose and a near virtual history tour of late 20th century electric
guitar, touching on widescreen psychedelia, art rock, the late-70's New York scene, and the melting
pot of early 90's underground bands, but writing a whole new chapter, unforeseen by most in 2014.

Solar Motel was received as a singular work of guitarroristic finesse, turning up across many year ends
lists (Uncut, New Yorker, etc) and provoking ecstatic comparisons to psychedelic visionaries and the
countless champions of guitar-based music who tend to outlive the trends.

Whereas Solar Motel was a Forsyth solo album recorded with an ad hoc studio band, upon its release
Forsyth put together a group of players to tour the record - bassist Peter Kerlin, guitarist Paul Sukeena
(Spacin'), and drummer Steven Urgo (ex-The War on Drugs) - who took his vision to another level.
Forsyth brought this group, now called The Solar Motel Band, into the studio in late 2013 to make
Intensity Ghost, largely forsaking the epic sprawl of Solar Motel in favor of a startlingly diverse and
focused set of songs. The result is a 5-track masterwork and a rare combination of power and grace.

Just as The Grateful Dead or Popul Vuh were able to embrace broad spectrums of sound and transform
those infl uences, the Solar Motel Band distills Forsyth's message while avoiding any genre-exercises.
Intensity Ghost is a giant sounding record, it's hall sized psychedelia fi lled with hooks and an immediacy
rarely found in such sweeping, cinematic music. The in fluences are not hard to spot, but this is no retro
reenactment trip. Forsyth and the Solar Motel Band synthesize rather than emulate what has come before,
producing something all their own. Their music is expansive, yes, but also profoundly compelling and
lyrical; no one is missing a singer in the Solar Motel Band. Forsyth's guitar makes sure of that.

Tiger Army III: Ghost Tigers Rise is Tiger Army's third full-length album. It was released by Hellcat Records on June 29, 2004. It takes the psychobilly of their first two efforts and layers it with elements of country, blues and punk to create a more mature and emotional sound than previous works. The focus of the lyrics on the album range from topics of ghosts and vampires to life and love. The album was well received and led to their first U.S. headlining tour in spring of 2005.

A Ghost Story is the new film from director David Lowery (Pete's Dragon) starring Casey Affleck (Manchester By The Sea) and Rooney Mara (Carol). In this singular exploration of legacy, love, loss, and the enormity of existence, the movie follows a recently deceased, white-sheeted ghost returning to his suburban home to try and reconnect with his bereft wife. The score to A Ghost Story was composed by Lowrey's frequent collaborator Daniel Hart (Tumbledown). Astral in sound and cosmic in scope, Hart's compositions for A Ghost Story will haunt you.

A mix of pop melodies, minimal country truisms, jingle-jangling Californianism, and angular folk. Lyrically and conceptually, the duo continue down their twisted path after five full-lengths and an EP in their five year history. There Is No Love In Fluorescent Light

STARS have made their career telling the tales we keep in the darkest, and most
hopeful parts of our souls. Delivering the hard and soft edges of life and love as
only this band can, they returned with two new tracks Privilege and We Called
    It Love.

From the reflective beauty of Amy Millan's vocal in Privilege "never got what you
want, never got it" to Torquil Campbell's contemplative and contrary, "I don't believe
that people change but I've changed" on We Called It Love, Stars return
time and again to comfort and reassure us that within the experience of failure
and fucking up is the path to a life well lived.

A collective band statement notes, "We're back! We have a new album. It was
recorded in Montreal and Connecticut with the great producer, Peter Katis. We
love him and thank him for being there for us. It's our first with our friends at Last
Gang. We made this record for ourselves, for our kids, and for you. And we are
so happy and grateful that you're still listening to our music."

With approaching 20 years as a band and a storied album catalog spanning
2001's Nightsongs, the romantic upheaval of 2003's Heart and 2004's Set Yourself
On Fire, 2007's In Our Bedroom After the War, the downcast elegies of 2010's
The Five Ghosts, the rejuvenation of 2012's The North and sub-base, dance club
infused No One Is Lost in 2014, Stars continue to prove themselves some of the
finest musical storytellers in the country, moving through life with their fans.

Lead singer Papa Emeritus II was 'let go' and replaced by the younger, more powerful Papa Emeritus III, who expertly leads his Ghouls through 10 scorching tracks, including 'Cirice', which means church in Old English and is an ode to institutions inventing the problem so that they can offer the solution.

Since the release of their debut album Idol Omen in 2009, Glass Ghost's founding members Eliot
Krimsky and Michael Johnson have kept busy. In addition to playing dozens of shows, including
a tour with White Rabbits, Johnson joined Dirty Projectors as their new drummer, Krimsky has
been collaborating with Here We Go Magic on keys, and the duo welcomed two new members to
the group, Tyler Wood on keyboards and percussion, and Aerial East on vocals. Like their debut,
LYFE was produced by Tyler Wood, who also produced Joan As Policewoman's 2014 album The
Classic. For the LYFE recording sessions, the group recruited many of their friends to contribute, including Joan Wasser of Joan As Policewoman, Nat Baldwin of Dirty Projectors, and
Christopher Tignor of Slow Six and Wires Under Tension. Pushing their songs to new levels by
working with Brooklyn's musical elite is nothing new for Glass Ghost. They worked with more
than a dozen of their friends from Brooklyn's music community, including Sharon Van Etten
(who in 2011 noted "Eliot Krimsky is one of my favorite writers."), Here We Go Magic's Luke
Temple, and Matt Iwanusa of Caveman, for their debut which was described by the New Yorker
as "elegant compositions of frosted indie pop," and by Time Out New York as "weird and mournful yet highly rhythmic.

On their new album LYFE, Krimsky (who's currently working on his M.A. in Media Studies at The
New School, where he's exploring the convergence of technological mediation, identity and
music) turns his observations of the absurd and mundane into metaphors about living in a
world where every detail about your life is harvested, quantified, and used by marketing companies to manipulate your behavior. Rather than sounding didactic or overly intellectual, the
songs provide windows into the band's internal world, as Krimsky's tender falsetto glides over
the icy landscapes of synths, strings, woodwinds, and regal horns. As the product of Krimsky,
Johnson, and Wood's mutual trust, vision, and relentless attention to every detail, LYFE masterfully blends airy, melancholy, and chilly atmospherics with Glass Ghost's irresistible bottom-heavy grooves and hooky pop sensibilities.

    Psychic 9-5 Club

Psychic 9-5 Club marks the beginning of a new chapter for HTRK. It's
an album that looks back on a time of sadness and struggle, and
within that struggle they nd hope and humour and love. It's Jonnine
Standish and Nigel Yang's rst album recorded entirely as a duo-
former band member Sean Stewart died halfway through the
recording of their last LP, 2011's Work (Work, Work).

Though the record is instantly recognisable as HTRK-Standish's vocal
delivery remains central to the band's sound, while the productions
are typically lean and dubby-they've found ample room for
exploration within this framework. Gone are the reverb-soaked guitar
explorations of 2009's Marry Me Tonight and the fuzzy growls that ran
through Work (Work Work). They've been replaced with something
tender, velvety and polished. This is HTRK, but the esh has been
stripped from their sound, throwing the focus on naked arrangements
    and minimalist sound design.

The album was recorded at Blazer Sound Studios in New Mexico with
Excepter's Nathan Corbin, who had previously directed the video clip
for Work (Work Work) cut Bendin. Inviting a third party into their
world was no easy decision, but in Corbin they found a kindred spirit.
The LP was then rened and reworked in Australia at the turn of 2013,
before the nishing touches were applied in New York during the
    summer.

Of all the themes that run through Psychic 9-5 Club, love is the most
central. The word is laced throughout the album in lyrics and titles-
love as a distraction, loving yourself, loving others. Standish's lyrics
explore the complexities of sexuality and the body's reaction to
personal loss, though there's room for wry humour-a constant
through much of the best experimental Australian music of the past
    few decades.

Standish explores her vocal range fully-her husky spoken-word drawl
remains, but we also hear her laugh and sing. Equally, Yang's
    exploratory production techniques-particularly his well-documented
love of dub-are given room to shine. They dip headlong into some of
the things that make humans tick-love, loss and desire-with the
kind of integrity that has marked the band out from day one. Psychic
9-5 Club is truly an album for the body and for the soul.

    L1 EP

For much of the Brooklyn duo's career, Beacon has worked
with a kind of effervescent, forward-looking R&B that evokes
out-of-body experiences, but with their new L1 EP, the music
is anchored assuredly to your flesh, bone, and physical
senses. The brawny synth timbres which open lead track
Fault Lines and the stomping beats bolstering gauzy
falsettos on confident songs like Minor Structure set the
tone for a new phase in Beacon's evolution, one geared
toward the movements and magnetism of human bodies. As
producer Jacob Gossett puts it, Our records have often been
described as moments after the night has given way, a
'comedown after the club.' Hopefully, this record inspires
people to go back out for one more.

Mixed by Al Carlson-who has worked on Autre Ne Veut's
Anxiety and St. Vincent's Marry Me, among many other
notable records-L1's five tracks focus on themes provided
by a natural phenomenon in gravitational physics known as
Lagrangian points. The title itself refers to the point in space
where a satellite can fall in synchronous orbit with the earth
around the sun, caught between the two gravitational pulls
and never falling out of sync. With a breathy voice that
sounds as vulnerable as it does touchingly sanguine, singer
and producer Thomas Mullarney III translates the idea to
nuanced musings on internal conflict, human relationships,
and questions about desire, guilt, and pleasure. I wanted to
stage intimacy and desire as natural forces," explains
Mullarney, "spinning with reflex and intuition, caught within
    different spheres of influence."

    The Other Side Of Desire

In the hands of the eccentric jazz-pop poet Rickie Lee Jones, the phrase the other side of Desire could mean a lot of things. As it happens, it's where the gets her mail; the singer-songwriter has been living quietly in New Orleans for a little over a year. This past fall, she celebrated her 60th birthday with the Lost Bayou Ramblers, at d.b.a.

The Other Side of Desire is also the title of Jones' first album of original material in more than ten years. Written, recorded and rooted in the city of New Orleans, according to press materials, it was crafted with producers Mark Howard and John Porter, whose resumes are heavy with names like Roxy Music, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and the Smiths. (Porter, who also lived in New Orleans for a time, can count locals like the Honey Island Swamp Band, Jon Cleary and Tommy Malone on his personal roster as well.)

The album is pure Jones: warm and whimsical, with a keen storyteller's touch. This time around, it's infused with the sounds of New Orleans. Strains of swamp-pop, honky tonk and Cajun waltzes wind through The Other Side of Desire which, the release said, could not have been written without the backdrop of New Orleans; its river, trains, barroom ghosts and sudden bands all playing the same song.

    First Ditch Effort (Awaiting Repress)

What's really left to say about NOFX? For over thirty years the reigning kings of punk rock have remained relevant by continuing to push the boundaries of their music and lyrics in a way that's as endearing as it is infectious. For that reason it's remarkably apt that the band's latest LP First Ditch Effort is also their thirteenth, because ominous black clouds hang over this collection of songs that see frontman/bassist Fat Mike exploring self-loathing and mortality in a more raw and honest way than he ever has before. Mike credits much of this to the writing process behind NOFX: The Hepatitis Bathtub and Other Stories, the band's New York Times Bestselling memoir that forced him to confront his ghosts and revisit his past in ways that weren't always comfortable. Additionally, having focused so much energy on writing songs for a Broadway musical over the past few years, Fat Mike's songwriting on First Ditch Effort benefits from a similarly nuanced and varied approach, while simultaneously spitting out all the pent up angst and aggression that was necessarily reserved for NOFX songs. Guided by the collaborative influence of producer Cameron Webb

    Hell's Ditch

    2004 Re-Mastered Audio

Hell's Ditch, which was originally released in 1990, was produced by Joe Strummer of the Clash, whose punk/politicized rock was long an influence on The Pogues. Highlights of the band's last album to feature Shane MacGowan include the modern rock hit 'The Sunnyside Of The Street', 'Rain Street, and 'The Ghost of A Smile.

    Insides

Like many others, Ghostly became enamored with Fort Romeau's idea of slow
listening, the concept of enriching relationships with music through careful
attention and focus. His understated take on deep, groove-friendly house started
pushing this practice three years ago, when the producer's debut LP, Kingdoms,
appeared via 100% Silk. The native Londoner, born Mike Greene, has evolved
considerably since then, finessing his sound over the course of three breezy 12s,
one EP, and lengthy DJ sets at some of the best clubs in Europe-not the least of
which were Berlin's famed Panorama Bar, London hotspot Plastic People, and
Robert Johnson in Frankfurt. Those years Greene spent immersed in his craft and
new inspirations have generously informed the eight stunning productions which
comprise Insides, Fort Romeau's long-awaited sophomore album.

Playing in those clubs definitely had an affect on how I approach composition and
pacing, Greene shares. I want to allow things to breathe and develop gradually
over longer track lengths, rather than cram everything into four or five minutes. His
patient methods are a central component to the billowy house music on Insides,
though this isn't an indulgent album of gratuitous buildups and tiresome
breakdowns. Each production is pointed and purposeful, as the artist crafts every
second of analog electronics with rich detail, nuance, and refinement.

Throughout Insides, Fort Romeau guides us down misty corridors lined with supple
synth pads, quietly thumping kicks, and elastic low-end sequences reinforced by an
emotive confidence. Thick dancefloor cuts like All I Want and Folle are built on
    such satisfying elements-sounds so full-bodied, you'd swear they're knocking
against your bones. This, too, is by design. I wanted to make sure all the songs
have a tangible quality, says Greene of his LP's physicality, to make texture and
grain become as important a part of the vocabulary as timbre and pitch. This was
accomplished with an arsenal of machines, including his Moog Voyager, Yamaha
DX7, Roland Juno-6, and Korg 770, a vintage synth he describes as having so much
presence and vitality, it almost feels like it's alive. Equally important to the weighty
presence of his music is meticulous post-production. The record was mixed on an
analog desk and mastered to tape, Fort Romeau elaborates. These processes are
as much a part of the sound as the synths and sample sources themselves.

There is also a deep stylistic eclecticism to Insides, and coming from Greene, this
was galvanized by deep cuts he discovered while digging to find music for his
extensive DJ sets. Old kosmiche, disco, and early electronic records are among the
strongest influences, and Fort Romeau used them as an impetus for creation. It's
those strange and wonderful tracks that you find on the b-side of an old record that
sparked my desire to make something new, he shares, but it's very important for
me never to feel like I'm making a pastiche. Indeed, the sleek expanse of Lately
and the title track's jacking grooves take cues from buoyantly cosmic dance music.
And yet it's the personality of a young artist coming into his own that makes Insides
such a graceful collection of house music, one that only further enriches the soul
    over time.

    Rhine Gold (Discontinued)

Choir of Young Believers, led by Jannis Noya Makrigaiannis, garnered an imposing number of accolades in their Danish homeland for a debut full-length. That release, This Is for the White in Your Eyes, signaled the arrival of a powerful new talent, possessed of a fully formed vision, arch compositional ingenuity and a tenor to die for. While White in Your Eyes racked up overwhelmingly positive international press, it can practically be seen as a soft launch for Choir of Young Believers' masterful Rhine Gold. If Rhine Gold hews closely to the template of its predecessor, it expands on it in every way. Now a proper band, the collaborative dynamic has imbued their sound with more authority and daring, as Choir inhabits a wholly unique space where intimate folk, classic Krautrock, big-sky Americana, avant-garde composition and bombastic theatricality seamlessly serve the same master. Like Choir's music, Makrigiannis' powerful voice unifies the ambitious scope of Rhine Gold by sounding at once dolorous and magisterial. The rich, enveloping production does wonders to corral such creative largess under a unified, sepia-toned song cycle.

    Me Moan

Let's get a few facts straight right off the bat. The name is Daughn
Gibson - rhymes with Jaughn, or Raughn. He was born in Nazareth, PA,
and currently resides in the sleepy college town of Carlisle, PA, where
he frequents local watering holes like The Cave and Alibis. He's 6'5,
200 pounds, and has a head of thick, jet-black hair thicker. He played
drums in Pearls & Brass. Daughn was a trucker, sure, but he's also
packed boxes in an un-air conditioned warehouse, climbed up commercial
broadcast towers with untested levels of radiation, worked at an adult
bookstore, done sound at dive bars and collected unemployment checks.
    Daughn's been around.

Daughn Gibson first entered the daydreams of the general public in
2012 with his acclaimed debut, All Hell. Armed with modern technology
and a pile of thrift-store records, Daughn shook the ghosts out of scratchy
Christian folk records and baptized them as fierce Americana with his
booming baritone voice. His songs are as frequently tender as they are
prurient, as hopeful as they are brimming with despair. He treats the
past with respectful reverence while still being able to appreciate esoteric
modern-day electronic music from across the pond. The only real starting
point for the music of Daughn Gibson is Daughn Gibson.
It's on Daughn's second album and Sub Pop debut, Me Moan, that he
truly reveals himself to the world. If All Hell was a gritty black-and-white
movie, Me Moan is a widescreen IMAX 3D extravaganza. While the roots
of All Hell's sample-based music remain, these songs are performed
live, lushly detailed and richly orchestrated.

Live drums, guitars (by John Baizley of Baroness and Jim Elkington of Brokeback), pedal steel, horns,
house strings, bagpipes and organs appear on this record, but never
does it feel over-stuffed - every instrument or melody is perfectly in place.
Me Moan isn't just Daughn Gibson's primal scream, it's a skirmish
through the full spectrum of emotion, unfiltered and impassioned.
Like Cormac McCarthy or Robert Altman, Daughn Gibson is a uniquely
American artist who throws his soul into his work, free of compromise,
possessed by unique vision and so damn intense that he constantly
teeters on spontaneous combustion. It's not out of line to consider Me
Moan as his Blood Meridian; his Nashville. All that's left is for you to let
    Daughn in.
